So the reason I ended up at Niabi Zoo was because several weeks ago, @thekeeperofbabyyoda sent me several pictures of fennec foxes, and I thought they were THE CUTEST and became obsessed enough to track down the closest zoo that had some. They had two and were ADORABLE. This is only a fraction of the eleventy billion pictures I took.
Hilariously only one was in front and the other stayed in the corner like "fuck y'all" the entire time. But by the time I left even the one in front was like, "Lady, please, I am trying to nap. PUT THE CAMERA DOWN."

“Niabi Zoo is delighting crowds of visitors with the arrival of several baby animals born at the facility this spring. Two rare Amur leopard cubs, a male and female, romped in their habitat Wednesday morning as children moved around to get the best view.
Tumblr media
The cubs were born Feb. 23 to Niabi’s male leopard, Jilin, and a female named Iona who arrived from Thrigby Hall Wildlife Gardens in Great Britain for the purpose of breeding.

Zoo Director Lee Jackson said the cubs were introduced to the public about a month ago. "They're doing great, they're getting big," Jackson said. "They had their last hands-on physical a few weeks ago and everything looks great. They're closing in on 20 pounds."

It was fun because I haven't been there since 2011 or so. After that I would be going to the Niabi Zoo (at Blank Park Zoo) https://www.instagram.com/p/By3PE8yH11q/?igshid=171xbrp5waxe0

following up on follow-ups
i got back to ia after my visit to baltimore feeling sooo gewd, everyone! i emailed all the faculty and students i’d met while at umb.  i heard back from everyone, who was all very gracious and kind.   some of the students and i discussed literature management systems, etc. and nicole actually got back with me and said she and orrin had talked about how i’d be such a great fit at umb. *swoon again*   i also had my phone call with joan scheduled for 5/14 but schedules got mixed up and we ended up connecting 5/16, when SHE SENT ME A RESEARCH PROJECT I COULD JUMP ON!!!  i was through the roof and over the moon.  joan invited me on not 1 but 2 projects!  more than that, she offered to check in with the business office regarding whether or not i could get paid.  talk about undeserved rewards!  seriously, what did I do to deserve that?! in any case, i shockingly began the long journey of the lit review away.  this project focuses on the conference proceedings of the 3 branches fo the aging network.  i got to sink my teeth into things such as minority aging, creativity in older age lifelong learning, etc.  as the 12 grand challenges for social work recently rolled out, i incorporated some of those into my work, as well.  i cannot tell you how many countless hours i spent at the uihc, working on that review.  every time i gave it to sara to read through, she signed off on it and said it was perfectly fine, which, to be honest, was a bit unsettling.   joan, rajean, and i circled back and had a conference call 7/17/2018, where we discussed next steps.  joan signed off on the lit review i’d conducted and said it had a wealth of knowledge there that could be very useful, moving forward.  we divvied up next steps, where i was to attempt to secure conference proceedings from AIRS and NASUAD that would be used in data analysis.  joan and rajean discussed their respective next steps, and then we all spoke about follow-up articles.  i can’t believe it.  i’m swinging on the academic monkey bars!  we set a plan to circle back in 2 weeks.
sara and i took the kids to the niabi zoo 7/22/2018 and she and i had a great conversation en route, where she told me all about turnaround timeframe from submission to publication, how many publications i should have by graduation (n = 5–7), how many publications i should have in process upon graduation (n = 2–3), and how many publications i need to turn out each year as a junior faculty (n = 3).  i simply cannot fathom i’ve already built 1 into my base and have another staged in the pipeline.  i mean—holy shit, right?  sara actually also said “you’ll be a better academic than me” in the car and i almost shat myself.  i truly don’t think she knows what that possibly means to me, as crazy-sounding as it may be. i got my hands on all my conference programs currently available through AIRS and NASUAD (just waiting on this year’s NASUAD…which incidentally takes place in baltimore 2 weeks after i am due to arrive…) and then i’ll be set! cassey and i signed a lease!  we will live at camden court, an apartment building 5 minutes away from the ssw.  i am so, so excited.  it is a little pricey (and i might argue out of our price range…) but i am excited to live somewhere i can be proud of.  everything feels really good at the moment.  i can’t believe it.  i sometimes catch my eyes welling up.  this feels right.

Niabi Zoo celebrates birth of four Fennec Foxes
Niabi Zoo celebrates birth of four Fennec Foxes
Good News Notes:
“The Niabi Zoo is celebrating the birth of four Fennec Foxes.
The four kits, all boys, were born on Jan. 8 to the zoo’s 3-year-old male, Jelani, and 9-year-old female Pika. Zoo officials say both mom and dad have proven to be excellent parents and are keeping a close eye over their new family.
According to the release, Fennec Foxes are native to the Sahara and Sinai deserts…
