Spellbreaker: A Scholomance Sequel

I finally finished my fic! I've been cranking away at it for 10 months like El translating the golden enclave spells when she should have been doing schoolwork, but it's finally done, yay!

Summary:

I wanted to be a wizard, but I guess I was doomed to be Grandma’s little monster instead.

El and Orion’s son is a mundane struggling to cope in the wizard world, but as Jacob gets older, his disdain for wizards’ treatment of mundanes grows like the distance between him and his parents. When Jacob develops a strange new ability, his maleficer grandmother preys on the opportunity. What side will Jacob land on? His decision could change the world of wizards and mundanes forever.

(This fic has a humorous tone similar to the original series, builds on the established magic system without contradicting any existing elements, and contains additional worldbuilding. )

Man, I love love interests with magic mothers who weaponize them and artificer dads. Just really sets up an angsty backstory for when you need more than "they're cute." The trauma also makes for a character who needs to prove themselves constantly, which makes excellent plot fodder.

Anyway, I'm going back and re-reading the conversation between El and Balthasar Lake after making it to the end of the book and-- (spoilers)

THE SCREAMING INVOLVED IN RE-READING THIS SCENE.

Orion's dad absolutely knows what Ophelia did to their kid. There's a reason he's fine with Orion being dead (one less maw-mouth in the world), but absolutely attached to the stories of Orion being human. And when he says "You'd better come talk to Ophelia," and there's that whole typical El rant about enclavers and their calculations? Girl, he was not doing the calculations you thought he was doing. Because he knows what Ophelia is too, and he probably knows she was looking for El or an equivalent, the fair trade for making Orion, and he's risking bringing El under Ophelia's wing right there along with saving and/or killing his own son -- EL YOU SAID RIGHT TO HIS FACE THAT YOU WERE THE ONE PERSON WHO COULD KILL ORION AND YOU DIDN'T EVEN KNOW YOU WERE SAYING IT.

...and there's a good chance he guessed the bit about the enclaves falling too. She told him "I've done it three times." Mr. Lake almost certainly is on the inside regarding the particular enclave building spell. And this is a plot point that can be solved by counting, if you know how enclaves are built. Can you imagine, knowing the answer to the mystery of Bangkok and company, knowing your enclave is halfway to war over that mystery, and you're not even going to do anything about it because your calculations also include Ophelia Rhys-Lake?

AND THEN. AND THEN, Ophelia herself! "She'd more or less turned herself into the Scholomance." Pair that with how Orion ends up, as Atlas. Two Scholomances in one family, the old and the new, and one made the other through sacrifice after sacrifice...

Jesus Christ, Naomi Novik. Just hit me in the face with it. God.

anyway the thing about the Scholomance series is that I’ve gone into those weird fugues that afflicts us all from time to time and my great passion is to write a Gwen Higgins/Ophelia Rhys-Lake fic. These are the moms of the two teenage leads who are the series’ main ship. The protagonist talks a fair bit about her mom Gwen, a talented healer and hippie who is dirt poor because she won’t take any money for her services and gave her superweirdo daughter a wonderful and loving childhood, and we know nothing about Orion’s mom Ophelia except that she’s a magical world bigwig who heads its most powerful enclave, and had a fair bit of trouble giving her superweirdo son a wonderful and loving childhood. I think they should meet up after reports come out of the school that their kids are ??? getting together ???, be extremely mad (Ophelia) that her son is by all accounts madly in love with a weirdo freak, and also be extremely mad (Ophelia) that the weirdo freak girl’s mom is this pretty, talented lady who has none of the life success Ophelia has struggled so hard to attain but is somehow much happier than she is and has succeeded in a parental role to a degree that Ophelia didn’t know was possible when your kid is That Fucking Weird.

Just finished reading 'A Deadly Education' by Naomi Novick and l o v e d it.

I'm extremely interested in the choices of names in this book!

Galadriel - I don't know enough about Tolkien to deconstruct the name 'Galadriel' - apart from the idea i got from the movies that she has access to excessive power and struggles not to use it.

Orion - Orion is the hunter, out to kill all of the critters. Seeeeeeems pretty indicative. I don't like the theory floated thay Orion is a construct, but I do think his powerful parents fucked with him using magic. The word lake has etymology that involves translates the concept of an empty basin to be filled, which is interesting.

Liu - the only legit ish translation I found was 'killer', and it was on a pretty white/western site, so not particularly reliable. But it's interesting given her role as a maleficer.

Aadhya - verrry interesting. traslations seem to revolve around concepts of being the best, the whole world, another name for a goddess ... Aadhya was the only person to figure out who took care of the Maw Mouth, she's extremely well connected.

Jack - this one is too easy. Jack the ripper, spring heeled jack, etc. Edit: Jack's last name is westing, which is a nautical term meaning traveling west. choosing to interpret this as the west (US, NYC specifically being evil as he is evil, wanting El to give into her dark side thw way Jack does)

magnus - the great, the best, the leader. he does seem to be the leader of the NY kids.

chloe - young, green. meaning green as in a green shoot, but to me seems like a play on her naivete.

gwen - holy woman, blessed woman

ophelia Rhys Lake - heaning 'help'. well, ophelia drowned herself in a lake, so there's that. and Rhys is a welsh name.

I'm aware of the discourse. I tend to personally agree with Namera Tanjeem's take on it (article on bookriot).

It's kind of dumb that most posts online about it are copy and pastes of the same criticism from a handful of individuals, being shared without the poster necessarily having read the book. Edit: this does not mean that i think the original posters of those sentiments have dumb opinions of course - i always think individual critique should be voiced. i think it's impossible for positive change to happen without people speaking up.

I also tend to find that some of the criticism may be rooted in the conflation that some readers have in confusing the voice of a character with that of an author.

I’m glad we’re meeting up here, I haven’t been to the lake in too long,” she admitted, wondering if the last time she was there really was when she’d cried over her breakup with Jackson. It seemed like a lifetime ago now, though she quickly pushed the thought away to not risk any emotions creeping back in.
