The Philadelphia Flyers Saved My Saturday

The Philadelphia Flyers hockey team became my Saturday salvation.  The day was the darkest and dreariest of the year thus far, frankly, since winter began.  The forecasters called for the first significant snowfall of the season, but with the temps still a few degrees too high, a frigid and steady rain settled in over the Delaware Valley which collided with the post-holiday-empty atmosphere in an ever-so-perfect storm of bleakness.  If you live in the Northeast, your options are few and easily can fall into the “stay in the house, cook, organize closets, put away Christmas decorations” doldrums.  Philadelphia sports are a healthier alternative, especially with teenage sons in the house collecting older adolescent dust on their unshaven chin stubble, basking in the nothingness of their umpteenth week at home between college semesters.  Rousing them out of the basement, off of video gaming, mindless scrolling, was made more seductive through the promise of first row seats at the 1pm Flyers game.  There have been murmurings of late about a “rising” from our neglected step-child South Philly sports team.  Relegated to the back seat of popularity as Philly sports fans have been distracted by winning seasons in football, baseball, and basketball, ice hockey fans have suffered from neglect.  After laying dormant and barely registering a pulse since 2010, suddenly word of a Flyers resurrection has been reported in hushed tones and hopeful cocktail party conversations.  Could it be?  Is it possible the ice is melting on the frosty, Han Solo-like glory of yesteryear?  Well, our family was about to find out.  We raided our closets to get ready, brushed away the moth balls on our sweatshirts and jerseys.  Look, this relic is from 2010!  Or maybe 1997!  Could this be ‘85 hoodie?  Before the term “hoodie” entered the pop culture lexicon?  The Flyers haven’t updated their logo in, well, ever, so you can dig out the tired, the tattered, the hungry of your merch and still be socially acceptable in the stands.  In Philly, when it comes to the Flyers, flashes of orange are a necessity.  Even if you’re attempting the “middle aged, fashion-forward mom of older teens but still a Philly fan just trying not to look like my older teens with a jersey” look, orange is a non-negotiable.  And lucky for me, I proudly pulled a shock flame orange sweater out of hiding, black jeans, white turtleneck, and black Converse.  Lady fan lite.  My eighteen year old, never knowing a time in his personal history when the Flyers were an actual thing, had not even a t-shirt in their name.  A stop at the rally shop was in his future.

It was 12pm when we arrived at the Wells Fargo Center just as the snowflakes were getting fat and the gray sky darkened and took on a more menacing shade of “January, I’ve arrived”.  We located our seats as the teams were hitting practice pucks and marveled immediately at the majesty that is front row center ice spectating in the NHL.  It is a treat beyond treats to be able to almost see the wisdom teeth of players as they chase the puck, crash into each other like Army soldiers in the sandbox, and race like monster speed demons on those tiny little blades.  One thing my son noticed was the sheer size of hockey players.  “Mom, they’re massive!”, was the reaction from the wide-eyed college boy as a Calgary Flame passed by us after a practice shot in a flash of red Bounty Man on skates.  He was right.  Television doesn’t quite capture the largess of the healthy looking young that populate the NHL these days.  Except when they smile.  Still true that some still don’t have teeth.  Hockey still sends chills up my spine that way.  You can be casually admiring a muscular young athlete's perfect bone structure  and masculinity only to have him meet your gaze with a goofy smile like a six month old baby, all gums.  The game is physical, aggressive, tough, and manly.  Testosterone on ice.  Sitting up front, we got all the glory of the plexiglass slam show.  Every few minutes a gaggle of players would grind each other, their sticks, and the puck right into the glass six inches from our faces like a head on collision, with our own self-imposed whiplash to match.  What a thrill! And wake-up!  To be in the game as we were, to almost feel the icy flecks of the rink on our faces and have hands ready to catch a wayward, high-flying puck is a privilege I, and my son, had never known.  He was getting into it and asked for a sweatshirt, bright orange.  He slipped it over his head quick and proud.  In the last few years, Philly sports and their winning ways have morphed this South Jersey born and bred sapling into a Philly guy, with all the agony, ecstasy, and crater-like chip on his shoulder that comes with it.  It helped that the Flyers were playing excellent hockey this day.  It also helped that we were so close to the goal and could capture the minutiae of the tiny puck’s slippery trajectory into that goal not one, not two, but three times. It somehow snuck through the Flames’ goalie and seven hundred pounds of Transformer-like leg pads.  Score, score, score.  Flyers fans erupted each time with characteristic Philadelphia rejoicing, attitude, joyful arrogance, and over-exuberant confidence (Stanley Cup this year!).  The cherry on top, though, is the brawling.  My son wanted to see a hockey fight and he got his wish.  In fact, he actually got several.  Jumpy, wound up, trash talking guys landing punches, piling into heaps, faces smeared into the glass with helmets popping off and referees grasping collars of oppositional gorillas.  The fans roared and, although the NHL doesn’t let blood spill anymore, they allow for the pressure valve to be released just enough for the sake of theatrics and keeping the game’s integrity of intensity.  

In between periods, my son noticed the orange flags hanging high in the rafters of ancient Flyers Stanley Cup history.  It was 1973, ,1974, 1975 when the Broad Street Bullies carved their loveable niche into Philadelphia sports history with their brazen, tough guy, blue collar victorious circus on ice and raw, toothless, winning grins.  My dad loved the Flyers and he is the reason I even know the history.  I was an infant when they tore through the town winning the hearts of everyone in Philadelphia and its environs.  My father was a South Jersey boy, like my son, but he was just as intoxicated by the masculinity of the sport and the blood-spilling it required to win. Dad regarded sports, facts, and history much like a statistician.  My son is equally analytical.  My father talked about the Broad Street Bullies throughout my childhood and here, the grandson he would never meet, is just as enthralled as he was, front row, center ice, fifty years later.  Dad would have loved this.  Sitting next to my son, contemplating that in my mind, made me happy.  I felt that by encouraging my son’s enthusiasm, I played a part in honoring some small sliver of dad’s immortality.  I immaturely shunned sports as a young girl.  I was too feminine, too girly, too ungrateful to the meaning and philosophy of athletics.  It took me a little longer to come around.  But come around, I have, and by witnessing my sons carrying on the sports crazed tradition in my father’s stead, I have gained an exhilarating appreciation for the way sports can excite, engage, and make miracles.     Grandfather and grandson united that day amidst the brawls, the flying ice, the gummy grins, and the fightin’ will to win, if only in my own memory and mind.  Dad never got to see it, but the magic we make in our heads is fairly or unfairly saved for those of us that still walk the earth, wanting to weave the flashes of our days and experiences into a kind of therapeutic poetry. I don’t know about the Stanley Cup this year but one mother’s cup was filled last Saturday. Thank you, Philadelphia Flyers.

NEW YORK RANGERS PRE SEASON CONTINUES

By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - The New York Rangers' pre-season game with the New York Islanders was canceled for Friday night and moved to Saturday, after serious flooding in NYC and on Long Island. The Rangers made roster moves sending five players - Karl Henriksson, Nicolas Brouillard, Ryder Korczak, Bobby Trivigno, and D Blake Hillman - to the AHL Hartford Wolf Pack. Hillman was released from his PTO. Adam Clendening was also released from his training camp PTO. The Rangers must get down to the CBA-mandated 23 roster players before the regular season starts. On Thursday night, the Rangers and New Jersey Devils hooked up at MSG. The Devils defeated the Rangers 3-2. The Blueshirts received very strong performances from Will Cullye, and Brennan Othmann, who both made a strong case to make the Rangers roster, and from Jonny Brodzinski for a fourth-line spot. Cullye was strong with robust, effective, physical contact and several quality shots on goal. He had a couple of quality scoring chances but was unable to put one in the net. Othmann brought the Rangers within a goal at 3-2 with 32.4 seconds left in the contest with a quick decision on a broken play (a broken stick on a right point slapper). He showed a quick release on the shot. In the first period, he picked off a Devils outlet pass and turned it into a solid scoring chance. Then in a mini-scrum in front of the Rangers' bench on a line change, he got into a tussle with the Devils' Tyce Thompson (Milford). Goalie Talyn Boyko was reassigned to Hartford on Monday. Tyler Savard, 20, is the son of Wolf Pack great, and former Ranger, and the current assistant for the Calgary Flames, Marc Savard, was picked up by the Kingston Frontenacs (OHL) from the Barrie Colts as one of their three overage players. Barrie had too many over-agers and released him. The OHL regular season begins this weekend for Savard, an undrafted left winger, who was in Ottawa’s NHL camp as an invite. Alex Pelletier (Granby/Avon Old Farms/Yale Jr. Bulldogs) commits to Cornell University (ECACHL). Ex-Pack goalie Keith Kinkaid was injured in the Devils pre-season opener in Montreal.- Former Whaler Kelly Chase has two sons in hockey.  Luke Chase leaves the Canmore Eagles (AJHL) and heads to Nipawin Hawks (SJHL). His brother Ben Chase plays college club hockey with the Arizona State Sun Devils (ACHA Division-1). His nephew, Greg Chase, is an ex-Pack who's now a pro scout with the  Philadelphia Flyers. Kyle Beach is an assistant coach at Trinity Western University  (CWUAA) (Langley, BC). The head coach is ex-Bridgeport Sound Tiger Ben Walter. Several ex-Packs play in the Canadian Senior League hockey. Among them is Steve MacIntyre from the 2004-05 season. He's with the Wetaskiwin (AB) Longhorns (NCHL), and the North Central (Alberta) Hockey League. In the same league is Matt Stefanishion (just 15 Pack games to his credit from 2008-09) who's with the Devon Barons. Garett Bembridge is with the Kenaston Blizzards Saskatchewan Valley Hockey League. Joey Leach is with the Wadena (SK) Wildcats of the Long Lake Hockey League. Also in that league is Dawson Leedahl with the Leroy Braves. In the Tigers Hills Hockey League in Manitoba is Shayne Wiebe with the Rivers Jets. Now head coaching out East in the Quebec Collegiate Hockey League Division-2 is Francis Lemieux at Vieux-Montreal. Brett Legget, who was an emergency goalie for one game and was ex-Pack’s Jeremy Williams brother-in-law is with Dundas (ON) Real McCoy’s of the Allan Cup Hockey League. By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - Hartford Wolf Pack news is starting to trickle out as New York Rangers training camp has officially opened, with a few tidbits still to come. The Rangers dropped their first pre-season game in Boston 3-0 to the Bruins as young netminder Brandon Bussi put up a 29-save shutout. Likely Pac-bound forward Will Cullye had a strong game for the Rangers. Adam Sýkora rang one off the crossbar late in the second for NY. The game featured several Wolf Pack players, including goalie Louie Domingue. Domingue played the second half of the game and lost a skateblade on one save. After the game, the Rangers assigned six players to the Wolf Pack. They include goaltender Olof Lindbom, defensemen Seth Barton, Zach Berzolla, and Ryan McCleary, the son of former New Haven Senator Trent McCleary, who is signed for an overage year with his hometown Swift Current Broncos (WHL). He was traded to them by the Portland Winterhawks about a month ago. Forwards, Maxim Barbashev, the younger brother of Las Vegas Golden Knight Ivan Barbashev, was moved in a QMJHL trade last month from Moncton Wildcats to the Shawnigan Cataractes. Barbshev, at 19, will be headed there as per the NHL-CHL agreement once the Wolf Pack training camp ends or whenever the organization ends his PTO deal. Barbashev turns 20 on December 18th. Sahil Panwar is a summer free agent signee by the Wolf Pack. Ex-Pack/Ranger bust, despite five points in five games, Vitali Kravtsov was injured early in his KHL season with Traktor Chelyabinsk. He is out four to six weeks with an upper-body injury and is out a week to ten days into it. Kenny Agostino, a former Yale Bulldog, following his deal being scuttled in Sweden after being in Russia the last two years, signs in Germany with Düsseldorfer EG (DEL). MATT GILROY Ex-CT Whale/Ranger Matt Gilroy is now an assistant coach with the USNDTP U-18 team (USHL), replacing current Ranger assistant coach and former Yale/Sacred Heart assistant coach Dan Muse. A great Gilroy story. The Wolf Pack once put up a game-time trivia question on the scoreboard asking what college Gilroy attended. On the scoreboard, they put up Boston College. Except Gilroy spent four years at BC's rival Boston University. A staff member had to go to the locker room between periods to grab him for a radio interview. Gilroy was NOT pleased. "How stupid are you people? I spent four (expletive) years at BU!" In the post-game, Howlings jokingly asked Glroy at the end of the interview what school he attended. He responded bitterly, then ripped the organization for screwing it up. Matt Barnaby Jr. (Avon Old Farms-AOF), the son of the former Ranger, stays in the Sunshine State and heads over from the Orlando Solar Bears (ECHL) to the Florida Everblades (ECHL). okay ik i haven’t updated this in a literal month so im finally feeding you my apologies for the wait

“Get up.” Jack said, grabbing the pillow from underneath Luke’s head and throwing it across the room.

Luke groaned, planting his face into the mattress. “What do you want?” he asked curtly, voice muffled by the sheets.

“It’s 1pm, we have practice in an hour, you’re a mess, I’m mad at you,” Jack listed, yanking the comforter off of his body.

Luke shivered and rolled over, shielding his eyes from the sun streaming in through the window. “What have you got to be mad about?”

“I haven’t heard from Abigail since she left, which, by the way, I know was your fault. Plus, you’ve been moody ever since she did, even though you’ve got no right to be.” Jack paused, taking a breath. “And I know what happened on New Year’s.”

Luke sat up on the bed, rubbing a hand over his tired eyes. “Then you know I’ve got some right. She’s the one who doesn’t.”

Jack rolled his eyes, throwing his hands up in exasperation. “Fine, be an idiot. See if I care. Don’t take it out on Abigail when all she did was like you. You’re probably not used to girls liking you though.”

“She doesn’t like me, she’s fucking Rudy,” Luke mumbled.

“You really are an idiot. Seriously, get out of bed or I’m leaving without you.”

Jack left the room and Luke let his head fall into his hands. He grabbed his phone from the bedside table, staring at Abigail’s smiling face on his lockscreen, and feeling worse about the whole thing.

He listened to the voicemail, and he felt sick to his stomach. He knew he shouldn’t have yelled at her, but seeing her with Rudy set something off in his mind.

Granted, he had a jealousy problem since they were kids and Abigail would come to Toronto talking about all of her Boston friends, but things were a lot different now.

When Abigail got a job on Shameless, Luke couldn’t be prouder, and when it came out, she was so excited to watch it with him.

It was just her and him that night at the lake, the others having gone to bed. “I can’t watch this with my parents,” Abby had said, clinging to Luke’s arm in excitement.

He figured that meant she was topless in a scene. He’d seen Shameless before, and he couldn’t lie about being a little excited about her debut. He was 17, after all.

What he wasn’t expecting, however, was a full on sex scene between you and a costar, who still comments on your Instagram posts.

That was the moment he realized that things were changing in Abigail’s world. He thought about how other guys would be looking at her, thinking about her.

Then Outer Banks came around, and she started dating Rudy. He had to act like he liked the guy, but in reality he hated the way it made him feel seeing Abigail with another guy.

For a whole year he had to watch her with him. She even brought him to the lake once, and then after that trip, he broke up with her over Luke.

So, naturally, he didn’t like it when he saw Abigail was hanging around a guy like that again.

He replayed the voicemail. “Fuck,” he said out loud. “I fucked up.”
