Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle Explained(Source Writer: Evilgidgit)
Oh, boy, I’m tackling a tough one. Kingdom Hearts was tricky enough, but this is another whole kettle of fish. I’m not saying Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle is a bad story, manga or anime; it is a very good one, but trying to understand the story in its entirety is a challenge. The manga was written by the team of CLAMP, best known for writing after popular manga like Cardcaptor Sakura, Magical Knights Rayearth, and Chobits. Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle is a big crossover of all of their notable works, and features world jumping with some new incarnations of familiar faces – so it actually is a lot like Kingdom Hearts narrative-wise. Let’s see if I can explain the plot as simply as possible. In Clow Country, Princess Sakura (based on the heroine from Cardcaptor Sakura) likes to hang out with her best friend Syaoran (also from CCS), an archaeologist who is investigating ancient ruins nearby. Sakura lives with her big brother King Toya and the kingdom’s high priest Yukito (both from CCS), her father Clow Reed (a prominent figure in the CCS universe and this one) being dead. Sakura loves Syaoran and intends on confessing to him. However, things go weird when Sakura is drawn to the ruins and her soul materialises as a pair of wings. Syaoran saves her but the wings explode into feathers and scatter across the multiverse of CLAMP’s works. Syaoran is sent to modern day Japan by Yukito, where he meets Yuuko the Witch of Dimensions, a main character of xxxHolic. Yuuko can grant wishes at a certain price of equal value – think equivalent exchange from Fullmetal Alchemist. At the same time of Syaoran and the comatose Sakura’s arrival, Yuuko is visited by the story’s other main characters – Kurogane, a grumpy swordsman who wants to return to his home, another version of Japan called Nihon, after being banished by Princess Tomoyo (another CCS character) to learn what true strength is; and Fai D. Flowright, a cheerful magician who fled from his world to avoid the king Ashura since they have a history together. Yuuko explains that Sakura’s feathers contain her memories and scattered to different worlds and alternate dimensions. Since all three have goals involving world hopping, Yuuko sends them all off together at a price – Kurogane gives up his precious sword, Fai surrenders a magic tattoo that suppresses his immense power, and Syaoran gives up the memories Sakura and he have. Yuuko gives the trio Mokona Modoki, a talking white rabbit creature that can cross dimensions and sense Sakura’s feathers. Mokona also has a twin that stays with Yuuko and used to communicate with her. Sakura begins to regain her memories as the group travel from world to world to find her feathers, which have caused significant changes in several dimensions. Eventually, the story’s first major plot twist occurs. The group go to post-apocalyptic version of Tokyo which is being slowly destroyed by acid rain, with the only drinkable water available at the bottom of the Tokyo Metropolitan Building, protected by one of Sakura’s feathers. The plot twist comes – a second Syaoran appears and it is revealed the one we’ve been following so far is actually a clone. The original Syaoran was captured long ago by the story’s antagonist Fei Wong Reed, also responsible for Sakura’s feather scattering and events related to Kurogane (killing his mum) and Fai (see below). Clone Syaoran was made with half of the original’s heart, and it was only a matter of time before the original Syaoran broke lose. Clone Syaoran loses his heart and becomes an emotionless puppet obedient to Fei Wong, abandoning the group to find the remaining feathers. Beforehand, he rips out one of Fai’s eyes which are the source of his magic, letting him use magic. Fai starts wearing a snappy eyepatch. The real Syaoran’s backstory is revealed – he comes from the universe of Magical Knights Rayearth and crossed dimensions to save Sakura from being captured by Fei Wong. The price to cross worlds was paid by his parents, assisted by Sakura Kinomoto (protagonist of Cardcaptor Sakura), who gave her magic wand to Yuuko as payment. Syaoran’s plan failed and he was captured, though this later turns out to be false. Fai was aware that Syaoran was a clone all along. Fai is severely wounded by the loss of his eye, and has to be turned into a vampire, a process aided by two vampire brothers named Subaru and Kamui, and must drink Kurogane’s blood to live. Sakura wishes to save the Clone Syaoran, loving him, with her friends accompanying her. The travellers eventually end up in Fai’s home world where it is revealed Fai is actually an alias. His real name is Yui and Fai is the name of his dead twin brother. Twins born in Fai’s world bring bad omens so King Ashura put both in a tower while he went on his annual slaughter of his people. Fei Wong offered to free one of them. The real Fai asked him to save Yui, so Fei Wong tossed him out a window and let Yui, but altered his memory so that he believed he sacrificed his brother to save himself. Fai is also hexed with two curses - one that will make him murder anyone who is magically stronger than he is, and the second will cause his magical powers to destroy his own world. Ashura fights the group but Kurogane kills him. As the world begins to collapse,  Fai uses his magic to send everyone to another dimension with the intention on staying in his dying world. Kurogane is having none of it and drags Fai into Modoka’s portal by chopping his own arm off to do it. The group arrive in Nihon, Kurogane’s world, where they meet Princess Tomoyo. Kurogane is given a prosthetic arm by a pair of brothers named Fuma and Seishiro, who are hunting the vampire twins across the worlds. Fai has to give up the last of his magic to Yuuko for Kurogane to use the arm. Sakura is rendered unconscious beforehand, being stabbed by Fai as part of his curse, her body and soul are split apart, with the latter appearing in a dream world. In the dream world, Sakura encounters Kimihiro Watanuki, the protagonist of xxxHolic who works for Yuuko and has a connection to the Syaorans. The Clone Syaoran arrives in the dream world, leading to a fight between both Syaoran. Sakura jumps in the way of their attacks and is killed, destroying her soul. However, she reveals she is in fact a clone herself and the real Sakura has been a prisoner of Fei Wong all along. Fei Wong then steals Sakura’s body to use its stored power. Here is where it gets really complicated. The group set out to find and rescue the real Sakura and end up in Clow Country, which is stuck in some sort of time loop. They discover from Yuuko that Fei Wong lives in an alternate version of Clow Country, based in a different timeline which was altered by him. In that timeline, Syaoran left his world and went to Clow Country after his mother foresaw him doing so, where he met Princess Sakura, whose parents are Nadeshiko and Fujitaka (who is Syaoran’s adoptive father in the current timeline) and Clow Reed was unrelated to her. Sakura had a death seal placed on her by Fei Wong which would expire within seven years, until Syaoran was offered by Yuuko the chance to rewind time at the cost of his freedom. Syaoran agreed, and became Fei Wong’s prisoner. Fei Wong captured Sakura too, and replaced both with their clones. Syaoran could never return home as a result, and Kimihiro Watanuki was created to fill the void of Syaoran’s absence. Fei Wong’s goal is revealed. Long ago, Clow Reed and Yuuko created Mokona together, but Yuuko eventually began to die. Clow wished her for an instant to open her eyes, but the power behind his wish was so strong it caused Yuuko to become trapped in a frozen state between life and death. Clow eventually died but was reincarnated as Eriol Hiiragizawa and Fujitaka Kinomoto respectively, both of whom exist in the Cardcaptor Sakura universe. Fei Wong wishes to break Yuuko’s frozen state to prove himself superior to Clow Reed. He intended on using the magic of Sakura’s memories and body as they travel across time, space and different dimensions to achieve this. Syaoran, Kurogane, Fai, and Mokona confront Fei Wong, and learn Clow Country is actually a future form of the post-apocalyptic Tokyo they visited before. Clone Syaoran arrives and betrays Fei Wong, but is killed. In another twist, both clones appear trapped in a glass container, alive and unharmed. It is revealed that Yuuko and Clow Reed were aware of the two clones and paid prices for them to be reborn – Clow paid possibly with his life, while Yuuko paid by letting her death draw closer. The two were reincarnated in the Magical Knights Rayearth world, reunite, and via a paradox, become the parents of the original Syaoran. Realising they would create an endless time loop, they seal themselves in the glass container until the time is right. Now wielding the magic of Clow Reed, the two break out and confront Fei Wong. Fei Wong uses the original Sakura’s body to achieve his dream, saving Yuuko , but it causes the fabric of the universe to collapse. Kurogane kills Fei Wong while the clones undo the damage to the universe. However, Fei Wong uses a final trap, sending both Syaorans and Kimihiro into a void from which they are not meant to escape from. Both of the clones disappear, leaving Syaoran and Kimihiro. They decide to split the wish payment to escape, but it has dire consequences for both. Kimihiro’s payment is to remain in Yuuko’s shop forever. Syaoran returns to Clow Country where he reunites with his friends, learning the original timeline has been restored. However, Syaoran decides his payment must be to travel through dimensions until he finds a way to revive the clones/his parents. Kurogane, Fai and Mokona agree to accompany him whilst Sakura remains behind in Clow Country. Before departing, Syaoran and Sakura confess their love to each other, and reveal they actually have different but identical names – “Tsubasa”.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle / CLAMP / Kurogane POV / Kurogane & Princess Tomoyo / KuroFai
~
change of plans (for everyone's peace of mind)
~
"Kurogane," he hears and when he turns, he sees Princess Tomoyo standing in the doorway, an unreadable look on her face.
Kurogane lowers Ginryuu carefully down on the floor next to him and stands up. "Princess," he greets, and then, bluntly, "What is it?" It's not a proper way to address one's Master, but then again, the both of them know Kurogane's not one to stand on ceremony unless the situation called for it. It doesn't now, so he doesn't.
"When are you and Master Fai planning on holding the wedding ceremony?" Tomoyo asks, straightforward and serious. Kurogane frowns. He'd expected some teasing on this topic, not this kind of point-blank interrogation.
"The mage and I decided to wait a little, give him some time to adjust to life in this world." Fai wants to learn the customs and the language and his way around the Nihon Country's court before anything else. And Kurogane doesn't need a ceremony to enjoy his life going forward with his beloved, so he'd agreed to wait.
Tomoyo steps inside the room, and closes the door behind her. "I think you should think about hurrying a little," she says, moving to sit down at Fai's writing desk.
Kurogane looks at her, takes in her stiff posture, the worried lines around her mouth and eyes, and wonders what's prompting this. "Why?"
The princess picks up one of Fai's brushes and rolls it between her fingers. "Usually, neither my sister and I care much about what our courtiers gossip about."
Kurogane sits down opposite her. "I know."
Tomoyo nods. "Lately…" She hesitates. But only for a moment. "Some of our courtiers are afraid."
"Of him," Kurogane clarifies.
"Yes," the princess agrees. She lays the brush back down. "They think he might be some spirit, or otherworldly being, here to wreak havoc. They fear he might try to bewitch myself and the Empress so he can seize power."
That's so ridiculous, Kurogane can't help the snort of laughter that leaves him. "As if," he huffs.
A small smile touches Tomoyo's lips. "I know. It is as ludicrous as it sounds. But his blond hair and blue eyes, his magic, they have people on edge, especially the more superstitious of the bunch."
That part, Kurogane gets. He, himself, has never been particularly superstitious, but he knows there are a lot of people who are. Even learned people at the royal court who should know better. "So you want us to get married faster so you can abate some of their fears that he might be attempting to insinuate himself into the royal family."
The princess tips her chin just so. "Yes. I think that would be the most advantageous route. For everyone involved. This way, we'd also stop getting marriage proposals for you that we always have to turn down."
That's… not something he expected. "Marriage proposals?" he asks, bewildered. "For me?"
Tomoyo giggles, finally losing some of the tension in her tiny frame. "Yes. You might be my personal guard now, and your childhood home might not be what it once was." And ah, that still stings, a pain in his chest that will never leave, no matter how many years pass. "But you are still the son of the last Lord and Lady of the Suwa province, Kurogane. All that land, and the title that goes with it, they are still rightfully yours. So of course there are people who would see this as an advantageous union. Especially since you are, as I said, my personal guard."
Ugh, Kurogane thinks, groaning. Just wonderful. "Yeah, okay," he says, rubbing his face with his flesh hand. "I'll talk to Fai. We'll do it as soon as we can get the kids here." Because if there's one thing they agreed on, it's that they're not doing this without their children there with them.
"Alright," the princess says and stands up. "I will start making preparations, then."
"Don't make it into a circus," Kurogane warns, though he knows it's useless. Tomoyo looks back at him, as she opens the door.
"I do not know what a circus is, but it will be a wedding fit for a lord and a prince."

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS.
hair color.  black eye color.  red skin tone.  tanned accent.  japanese voice. his tone is pretty low and deep, but it can raise when he’s angry. his regular talking voice is nice to listen to. dominant hand. he’s ambidextrous, but uses his right hand more posture.  it depends on who he’s with. around fai and syaoran, he’s generally pretty relaxed and doesn’t normally sit properly. around strangers and potential enemies, he’s completely alert and keeps his back straight; ready to jump in and fight whenever necessary. scars. he has.. a lot. before cutting off his left arm, there was a scar over the palm and top of his hand from when he first met tomoyo. various scars cover his back from his time in tokyo; left behind from the clone syaoran, after refusing medical treatment so that sakura could use it later. he also has a large scar on his side from when he fought ashura-ou, as well as a few around his left shoulder where he lost his arm. i imagine he probably has a lot of other little ones, considering the amount of time he’s spent as a warrior in his life. tattoos. none birthmarks. none noticeable feature(s).  he’s very, very tall, and has been told that he has a scary face.
CHILDHOOD.
place of birth. the province of suwa, in the country of nihon. birth weight. he was a pretty skinny kid, so probably between 5-7lbs? birth height. 50cm-ish. manner of birth. natural birth. first words. probably ‘mama’ or ‘papa’. siblings. none. parents. the lord and lady of suwa. parental involvement. they were a large part of his life up until the day they died. both were incredibly supportive of kurogane, and wanted him to live the best life he possibly could. though they had their own duties to attend to, they always made time for their son. they lived a very happy life together.
ADULT LIFE. occupation. originally, a ninja and personal bodyguard to princess tomoyo. currently however, he’s just a traveller. current residence. he has no fixed residence at the moment, even though nihon will always be his home. the last place he was in before spirale was a world called nirai kanai. close friends. (you mean family right?) syaoran, fai, sakura, and mokona. this includes the clone syaoran and sakura as well. souma and tomoyo are two people he respects incredibly well. relationship status. married w/ two kids-- i mean single financial status. it depends on the world he’s in! if there’s work to do, he can make a good amount of money, and will be happy to do so. driver’s license. cars don’t exist in his world, so he doesn’t have one, but he can adapt pretty well to other world’s technology. criminal record. lengthy... i suppose... he has killed a Lot of people, but they were trying to harm his princess. vices. drinking and swearing.
SEX & ROMANCE. sexual orientation. bisexual romantic orientation. biromantic love language. watching the way you talk, the way you look at things; making sure no harm comes to you, even if that means he has to throw himself in the way. insisting that you must live your life how you want to; not allowing you to drown in your sorrows. he’ll reach out to you and hold on tight, or at least rustle your hair around when you look sad. relationship tendencies. i don’t think he’s romantic in the traditional sense, but kurogane will definitely give his all to the person he loves; mostly in the form of words, promises, and actions. you’ll definitely know how much he cares for you, even if he shows it in his own way.
MISCELLANEOUS.
character’s theme song. break the sword of justice! hobbies to pass time. training, world-hopping, eating and drinking. mental illnesses. none that i can pinpoint. though he has his flaws, kurogane is very good at dealing with his problems and most often faces them head on.  fears. not being able to protect the people he cares about. self-confidence level. generally quite high. even if he’s unsure of something, kurogane will still see it through without hesitation. vulnerabilities. his friends.

Kurogane was a good looking guy, but Fai wishes no one else would notice when he gets bit by the jealous bug. But he could accept this fact.. Mostly. Part of my nihon series
Nihon was a beautiful country and Fai felt so blessed each day he gets to spend here. The changing of the seasons was an experience he's never really had to go through before, the whether changing from the cold chill of winter to warm spring days. The sun was warm, the sky so beautiful, and all the flowers were in bloom.
He really liked sitting out in the main courtyard under one of the smaller sakura trees, the scent of it reminding him of his princess. They'd have to go visit sometime, when Kurogane wasn't so busy. Soma was down with the flu, bedridden and grouchy, so his darling Kuro-sama was... volunteered to take over her training of the new recruits.
Fai liked to sit and watch most days, when he wasn't busy with Tomoyo in his various lessons about the country and about the magic required to become a priest, in case they ever decide to rebuild Suwa. Between her lessons, and the various lessons with Kurogane on the language and writing, he was doing rather well. He was still struggling with the written language though, so he would often practice in his free time.
Which is what brought him to the courtyard on this fine day. He could get his practice in while watching Kurogane with the recruits. He was surprisingly patient with them and he was reminded of back when he was training Syaoran (again, they'd definitely have to go visit sometime soon) It was nice to see and he found him watching the group more than the half-written letters in front of him.
It seemed like things were wrapping up, some of the younger of the recruits packing up the training weapons. Kurogane had been a little harder on them than he normally would have, but it was good for them on occasion. The recruits seemed to be in high spirits despite the fatigue, even joking with each other after they were dismissed.
Except for one, who lingered behind. His name was Taro, and both Kurogane and Soma had good things to say about him. He was already plenty strong, had good battle instincts, and had determination to get him through any challenge. He was also smiling at Kurogane with a charming smile and resting a hand on his arm.
Was he... flirting? Kurogane was a good looking guy, there was no denying that, but everyone here knew that they were together. But, these were new recruits, and he was rather strict when it came when he was okay with public displays of affection... There was a possibility he didn't know. He shouldn't...
Fai was up and moving towards the two before he could register his movement, a forced smile on his face. "Kuro-sama! Can you come check over my writing for me?" He was pleased when the two separated and he had no problem with stepping between the now empty space, holding the paper up between him and his boyfriend to muffle the urge to kiss him.
A scowl twisted Kurogane's face and he leaned back slightly to get a look at the paper, gaze drifting over the inked lettering before slipping past the page to look at Fai's face. "Can't you go over this with Tomoyo? I'm busy."
Fai quickly shook his head, hoping the smile on his face didn't look as forced as it felt. "She's in her shrine right now. Plus you said you were going to teach me this, so you should teach."
There was a long silence before Kurogane sighed, taking a step back to get a little space between them before he glanced at Taro, the smile having slipped off his face. "We'll have to continue training later."
Fai felt a pleased feeling twist in his stomach at that and he glanced at Taro from the corner of his eye, feeling a satisfaction from the disappointment on his face, but he still nodded in understanding. He'd have to make sure that Kurogane was busy tomorrow as well, there was still so much to learn after all. Soma was also on the mend, already close to being off bedrest, so she'll be back to train them within the next week.
Fai linked his arm around Kurogane's to lead him away, having to settle for this small contact in replacement of a kiss. Maybe Taro will get the hint without him having to actually say it. Otherwise it was not going to end well for him.

KuroFay Drabble: Those words we can’t say
It had almost been a month now. A month since they had officially ended their journey and returned the kid to his princess. Both he and the mage was happy, and also quite proud that they had been able to see it all through. Getting the kid safely back, with his price finally paid. It had been a hard journey, probably harder than the one they had gone through with collecting the princess’ feathers. Yet, none regretted the journey. Kurogane had thought he would have grown homesick, that he would worry about Tomoyo even worse than before as he by his own choice had decided to not return to her yet. But here he was, set to return home to his old home in under a week, and he couldn’t word how he felt.
It was close to the feeling he had at times after losing his parents. A lonely feeling.
He would soon be all alone again.
If he didn’t find words, he would travel back to Nihon all alone. He bites his lips at his own certainty again. Even if he said something, it didn’t mean anything would change. He would probably still end up going alone. The other kid had already sent them an item through Mokona that he could use to travel back to his own, the payment had been traveling with Syaoran, and the last remnants of the ward Tomoyo had once used on him. He hadn’t even known there was anything left of it. He had thought it had been a onetime thing, but it sounded like some good will had remained in the ward, and in a dire situation he could have been saved.
A tired groan, as he rubs his temple. How hard was it to just tell someone he didn’t really mind his company? That he didn’t mind his company to the point that he would actually miss it? At this point, just the thought of leaving the white bun behind made him feel down. As it was now, he was the only one that would be alone after this.
The kids had gotten married, the white bun would remain with them to work as a communication with the other kid and the black bun, and as far as he knew, the mage was remaining with the kids. After all, he had been offered the job as a court magician, as he himself had been offered the job as a court knight. So far only he had said no.
Honestly, it was probably for the best. He kept telling himself.
Fay was better off having the white bun close. They had already gone to a world once where he had been so out of his comfort zone. 6 months without understanding anyone had probably been hard for him. And just who was he to ask Fay come and live with him in a dangerous country? Where you could get killed by demons? And where he couldn’t understand what anyone said, and he would be the only one he knew.
The two of them were just friends after all. It was just that Kurogane had come to enjoy having a friend close. No, maybe it was more that he had a partner? Someone that he trusted with having his back? He felt like he didn’t want to be without that safety anymore. He and Fay had been through hell together. He could never get a bond like that again. However, who was he to even ask Fay to come with him? It was almost selfish to ask.
Just three more days now, and he would get away, and then he didn’t have to feel this pain anymore. Then it would be too late, and he wouldn’t have to think about this choice anymore.
Then there would be no way back.
“Kuro-rin! We are late! The party is starting!” A loud cheerful voice makes him jolt up, as he knew the blonde did not care about knocking, and just barged into his room the second after announcing his arrival.
“It isn’t a party, it is a ceremony to give safe travels or something.” Kurogane complains, as he had been able to strain his thoughts so much he had a headache by now. He wasn’t the sort of person to dwell on things. When he wanted to say something, he said it, he wasn’t used to this sort of stress.
“If there is alcohol served afterwards I call it a party.” Fay laughs, and Kurogane just groans and lets the other pull him along as he seemed eager to go and have some fun. One of the reasons he didn’t think asking would make a difference, was that the mage didn’t seem down about this at all. He was just acting the same as usual. Smiling, being cheerful and not looking like they were going to say goodbye in a few days at all.
“Please say that someone made sure the kids won’t drink anything this time.” Kurogane looks down at the pale slender hand holding unto his arm, fighting his sudden impulse to just grab unto it.
‘I don’t want to be alone’. Just how hard was it to utter those words?! After all this time, Fay was the one he should be able to say it to.
“Well, since they are married now, they can’t be seen as kids anymore, so they won’t listen to daddy’s rule about no drinking anymore.” Fay sings, as he just beams as they walked along. He currently had no worries in the world. Two of the people he loved the most in the entire world had just gotten married, and everyone he cared about were safe. That was more than he had allowed himself to hope when they started this journey.
To him, everything was perfect! And it would just keep getting better. For a while, no one he loved would have to die. Hopefully.
------------------------------------
“If you pretend meow one more time in my direction I will personally put you on a no sake diet!” A soft laughter from the blonde, as he had tried to not do it, but when the eager Sakura and Mokona had started running around mewling again, he had to pick on Kurogane a little again. He would never get over that first time they all drank together. “Honestly.” Kurogane gives his usual sulk as he looks away from the still chuckling Fay. His chest hurt. He would really miss this. The closer the time came, the more he was overwhelmed by a desire to just cry. This had been why he didn’t want to get involved with people, cause then he would care. Then he could suffer loss again.
Even if he had protected everyone, he was still losing everything.
Fay looks worried as Kurogane was clearly feeling down. The others probably didn’t see it, but he did. He could remember how his eyes would sometimes show sadness or worry when they had been preparing for battles. When he went out to fight and didn’t know if he would come back or if he could protect those he wanted to return with him.
“Hey, Kuro-tama.” Fay starts, as the now pouting ninja turns grumpily towards him. “Everything is going to be alright. The kids will be safe, even without you there to protect them. They will be okay.”
Fay didn’t know what he had expected at those words. Maybe that the sour face would fade? That the ninja would stop sitting for hours in his room with his head in his hands, and enjoy the last of the time he had with their small family.
What he hadn’t expected was the quite honest reaction on the other’s face, as he for a split second looked like he wanted to cry.
The mage goes over to panic, before he makes sure no one were looking at them, quite sure Kurogane didn’t want to worry the kids. He had suspected it lately, that Kurogane had been moody because he would miss the kids. It was the sort of guy Kurogane was, he was a big softie.
Honestly, the mage probably noticed before the ninja did how the words had made him react. Slender hands reach for his face with a tissue before he even realized tears had started falling. He had started this journey to get home, but now at the end, he didn’t know where home was anymore! He had gained strength that could protect those he loved, and now he was leaving those people behind? It just didn’t feel right.
Kurogane retired early that night, everyone else than Fay thankfully too drunk to really notice it, as he needed to clear his head a little. He didn’t find himself alone though, as the door opening right away as he had settled down on his bed. A familiar blonde mop of a head peeking in, accompanied by some really enticing sake he had grabbed on the way there.
“Want to try drinking ourselves silly? I still want to see Kuro-wan wan run around on all fours barking.” He chuckles, and skips in as he sees a smile spread across the tired man’s face.
“I told you it Is not going to happen, idiot mage.” Kurogane chuckles, as he accepts the bottle as Fay came over and settled down on the floor with his own bottle. “You will be mewling like an idiot before I even feel breezy!”
“Challenge accepted! The loser has to be a slave to the other for the next month!” Fay complains, and with that the two of them starts drinking, Kurogane not wanting to be the one to break it to him that they didn’t have a month.
They just had another day.
------------------------------------------
“You two don’t look well.” Sakura stammers worried, as the older men had woken up late that day, and both looked really horrible. Maybe the two of them had gotten drunk? Little did she know, the proud warriors had ended up probably emptying the party of alcohol and used the entire night devouring it. Neither of them had even felt breezy, but had ended up laughing and talking about stupid stuff Mokona, Syaoran and Sakura had done through the years. They had been up all night talking. Kurogane was happy actually that Fay had stayed there with him. He had probably needed someone to talk to more than he had thought himself.
Now he would use his last day there with the kids, even the white bun. He had been depressed long enough. Then he would deal with his own problems before he left. Seeing Fay talk about the kids had made him realize just how selfish it had been to even think about making Fay pick who to remain with. He would also be sure he left them in the safest hands. He trusted no one more than Fay, and now he trusted his most treasured people to him. It was how it should be, and he could return to Nihon feeling safe. He would be alone, but that was a price he would have to slowly accept.
The last day passed fast, too fast for his liking. Sakura and Mokona kept begging him to stay, as the brave Syaoran had accepted that his mentor and friend had his own world waiting for him. He knew how hard it was to leave your home behind, and even if he himself could never return to his, he wished Kurogane could return happily to his.
Then his time was up. Because It was a paid for travel, it had to be enacted at the set moment, and there was no way to get more time than set. So, when one of the priests came to get him, he knew there was no way back. With a heavy heart, he got his old clothes on, feeling like he was walking to his execution as he walked the steps down to the reservoir. Trying hard to not think back to his different descends on those stairs. He had lost friends in these halls before. He had lost the kid, he had almost lost the mage. In the ruins that had been above he had once bound himself to the mage for what would have been the rest of his life.
A lump in his throat threatens to escape, but he does his best to keep it in, as he didn’t want to show any tears. He wanted them all to see him off with smiles.
However, as the door opened, those hopes fades, as the kids were already crying, getting hugs from the worried blonde, that to Kurogane’s confusion were dressed in a kimono that he thought for himself could have been a creation of his wicked little mistress.
It actually was. But he didn’t know this yet. That Tomoyo and Fay had been talking a lot behind his back. After all, Fay had wanted to surprise Kurogane with actually knowing the language as they moved to Nihon. Their plan was of course to not let him know this right away, and then after some weeks show Kurogane Fay had understood all he had said all along. It would be hilarious!
“Ah! Kurogane! You are so late!” Mokona cries, as she bounces from Fay to nuzzle the ninja, that don’t stop her, and actually pulls her closer for something close to a gentle hug. “The portal is opening soon! Don’t go Kurogane! Stay here with us!”
No words, as he just pats her gently on the back, letting the small bun cry as he really couldn’t say anything back he hadn’t before. Soon Mokona jumps back to hug and cry to Fay again, as Kurogane says goodbye to Syaoran and Sakura in turn, making sure to tell the two of them all the safety advice he could give them. Most was to not start wars with other countries in the future, keep away from evil people, and don’t trust people blindly ever again. After he was done giving them all the safety advice he could think about at the top of his head, he leaves them traumatized before a bright light suddenly appeared on the water surface in front of them.
“The path to Nihon is open.” Mokona hiccups, as she jumps to rub her little round sad face all over Kurogane again, Kurogane once more feels the lump, as he looks up at the still smiling Fay, about to do the hardest thing he had ever done outside of fights. To say goodbye to his partner. “Ah! Hurry! Or it will close! Kurogane! Fay!”
Kurogane opens his mouth to utter the brave words of parting he had planned for so long now. It was just a short goodbye, telling the other something like how he had been a good ally, and how he had seen him as a friend on the battlefield. But the lump stopped his words, as he felt like he was breathless. Like the need to cry burnt his chest, everything worse as he looked into the bright blue eyes.
“Come on Kuro-tama! We are going to be late!” Kurogane looks down, as he noticed he had been about to reach and grab Fay’s hand, but the blonde grabbed his first, and before he even knows what is going on, he is pulled into the bright light, their loved ones yelling after them as Fay waves their hands with a bright smile. Kurogane were soon over the worst shock, and he tries to compose himself with waving as well.
A hard jab, as Fay drives his elbow merciless into the ninja’s side, Kurogane groaning as he covers, trying to hide a pained expression as Fay just keeps smiling. “That was for thinking I wouldn’t come with you, Kuro-sama.”
“Shut up…” He whispers, as he still had no idea what had just happened.
To Fay, it was obvious that he would stay with Kurogane. Not once had he thought anything else since they kept traveling together.
“I have no home anymore. My family is gone, and my two home worlds are both gone as well. The man I saw as a father is gone, and I have nothing.” Fay starts, as there was no sign of the others anymore, the light circled around them as they were sent off together. “So, since Kuro-rin once told me to live, I decided Kuro-tama had to take responsibility and take care of me. It is like picking up a stray cat, you have to keep feeding it, or you are a terrible person!”
Fay gives a painful whimper, as Kurogane starts ruffling his hair hard over how he had worded the entire thing.
“The truth is…” Fay chuckles as Kurogane looked away from him again, trying to hide how happy he was to have been able to do that again. “I see Kuro-rin and the kids as my family now, and since they will be okay, wherever you are will be home.”
Fay expects some sort of pissed reply, or maybe some shy remark, as Kurogane often got shy when people poured out their emotions to him. What he got though, as the light grew to the point of blinding them, was a warm hand grabbing his own, and the last he could see, was the overwhelmed smile on the ninja’s lips.
“Idiot mage. I was thinking the same.”

TRC Month Day 17   -   Fluff  /  Tsubasa Reservoir Chonicle / CLAMP  /  Fai POV
~
this dream of white flowers (make it come true)
~
“Is there any tradition, any custom, that you’d like to include?”
The question takes Fai a bit off guard. He looks over his shoulder at Sakura-chan, head tilted in a question.
Sakura-chan’s cheeks turn slightly pink. (It’s adorable.) “I mean,” she starts, distractedly pushing a lock of hair behind her ear. “For the wedding.” She picks up a couple of hair pins, one jade, one silver, and raises them to his hair one after the other, a thoughtful look on her face. “From... Valeria. Or from Celes. Kurogane-san mentioned some customs from Nihon, so I was wondering…”
Ah, so that’s what this is about. Fai smiles, unspeakably fond.
“Hmm…” He turns his head back forward, lets her twist strands of his hair together and pin them in whatever fashion she deems best. “I don’t know about Valeria,” he says, because honestly, he doesn’t know much about his birth country in general. He’d been too young to learn all that much when they’d tossed him and his brother in the valley.
“But in Celes… well, the only thing I remember was something about…” What was it, again? He’s only ever been to a couple of weddings in Celes. “The families of both the parties involved, the parents usually, would… do these little braids in their hair, from temples to the back of the head. The married couple would undo each other’s at the end of the celebrations. Cut a couple of locks, and braid them together.”
“That sounds lovely,” Sakura-chan sighs, a smile clear in her voice. “We could do that, if you want. It’s not that hard to incorporate, alongside Kurogane-san’s customs, and those of Clow Country.”
Fai hums, warmth blooming in his chest. It sounds nice, yes. For all that it also aches. “We could, yes,” he agrees. And, “Not that Kurorin’s hair is long enough to braid. But if anyone could manage it, it would be Sakura-chan.”
“Princess Tomoyo will be here for the wedding,” she reminds him, though. And yes, she will be, won’t she, because she’s the closest thing Kuro-sama has to a family, outside of those currently in Clow. “She will be the one to tend to Kurogane-san’s side of things. I will be doing Fai-san’s hair. Syaoran will help me.”
And well, what can Fai say to that? What can he honestly say, when his heart feels ready to burst with affection for this girl he’s come to see as his own (along with the other one, and the two identical boys, and the powerful, sentient being that is both translator and traveling companion)?
He turns around, careful not to ruin her work on his hair, and pulls her in for a tight hug. “Thank you, Sakura-chan.” He kisses the top of her head, buries his face into her soft hair.
He might have lost his brother, and the man who was a father to him for most of his life, but he has gained a family who loves him despite all his flaws. A family for whom he would pluck all the stars in the sky, for how much he adores them.
Sakura-chan buries herself deeper into his arms with a nod. She says, “Your wedding will be the most beautiful one ever, Fai-san, you just wait.” And the thing is?
Fai has no doubt it will be.

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle / CLAMP / KuroFai / Fai POV / Nihon Arc
~
easy to get, difficult to ask for
~
The night before they leave for Clow Country, Fai leaves his assigned rooms in Shirasagi Palace in search of his wayward ninja. The last time he'd seen Kurogane, the man had made some excuses about needing to talk to princess Tomoyo and left before either Fai or Syaoran or Mokona could question him.
That was a couple of hours ago, and honestly? Fai doesn't want to think about why he's having such a hard time finding the country's princess and her chief protector.
(He's not jealous. He has no reason to be.
Not after Tokyo. Not after Celes.
He's not stupid. And he's not jealous.
What he is is mildly concerned.)
"Where are you, Kuro-sama?" he mutters to himself as he turns yet another corner.
He promptly bumps into the man in question.
"Mage," Kurogane says, eyebrow raised. "What are you doing here?" Here, from what Fai can tell, being in front of a set of lavishly ornate sliding doors. Probably Tomoyo's private rooms. He swallows, pushing the thought away.
"I was looking for you," he answers. Kurogane looks at him questioningly. "I…" Fai starts, looking away because this is something that is difficult for him to say. So, he changes tack. "We're off to Clow tomorrow. Hopefully, we'll be able to find and defeat Fei Wang Reed. And I…"
As he trails off, it occurs to him how this might sound. (Which, well, isn't all that unfounded, but really, it's not the right time for things like that. After, maybe, when they settle down and take a breath. Still, not now.) "I mean! We should all get some rest, make sure we're at full strength tomorrow. Well, as much as we can be, with the way things currently are."
"Mage," Kurogane interrupts him. "You're rambling. What's going on? What did you do?"
And, well, he should probably be offended by that. "I didn't do anything," Fai huffs. "I wanted to ask you something."
"What?"
He looks down. It shouldn't be that difficult a thing to ask for, he knows, but it is, because of how things have been since Tokyo.
"You hungry?" Kurogane asks out of the blue, and dammit all, Fai had wanted to say it first, take the first step into mending (building?) that particular bridge.
He sighs. Nods. "I'm hungry," he admits. It's the first time he's said it since he's been turned.
Kurogane nods, and starts walking the way Fai came from. "Come on, then," he says, looking at Fai over his shoulder. "Let's go back to our rooms. Don't want the servants screeching about some pale yuurei draining the life out of me out here in the halls. Tomoyo would never let us live it down."
Fai nods, snorting a laugh at the image Kurogane's words invoked, and follows.
~
("I won't drink too much, don't worry."
"Drink as much as you need, idiot."
"Then I'll drink you dry, and then what'll we do?"
"Hmpf."
"Kuro-sama, I'll drink enough to hold me for a couple of days. We'll see how things are in Clow before I drink again, okay? You need to be in top shape, too, in case we walk into a trap and have to fight."
"I'm always in fighting shape!"
"Yes, but please remember you've lost an arm and about a third of your blood in Celes."
"Mage…"
"Let's not make it worse, alright? If I'm not allowed to take risks with my life, then neither are you. Okay?"
"...okay."
"Thank you.")

Tsubasa Chronicle Month - 2018
Day 31: The End – “You don’t have to leave right now.”
It’s years before they get to stop travelling. It’s years before he can go back to Sakura and stay. He had not truly hoped she’d wait for him, even though she’d welcomed him warmly, lovingly, every time they visited, but she did, and though it’s a few years later than either of them would have liked, finally, they marry.
The day after the wedding, Kurogane approaches them at breakfast, and tells them it’s time to move on, to go back to Nihon. Syaoran had known this day would eventually come, but he had not expected it to come quiet so soon. Still, he understands, though it saddens him.
‘Will Fai-san go with you? Or does he plan to stay here in Clow Country?’ Sakura asks, and Syaoran’s heart breaks at the hope in her voice. He’s sure he already knows the answer to her questions. Kurogane’s face eyes turn just a tiny bit sad.
‘I’m sorry, princess, but he’s going with me,’ he says, and his eyes are soft. ‘He’s actually packing his things as we speak. The Bun is helping him.’ And well, that does come as a surprise.
‘You don’t have to leave right now,’ Syaoran blurts out, ‘It’s too soon!’ He can see Sakura nodding vigorously in agreement. ‘A few more days, Kurogane-san, please. Stay a few more days.’ He knows that maybe he sounds a little bit childish right now, but losing yet another father figure (two, actually) when he’s only just come to terms with the fact that his own real one will never come back, is painful.
Still, he guesses all things must come to an end.
Kurogane lays a big, warm, gentle hand on top of Syaoran’s head, ruffles his hair, and that’s when Syaoran realizes he’s started crying. He wipes at his eyes with the heels of his hands ‘Sorry,’ he says, voice low. ‘I understand why you want to get home soon.’
‘We can stay a few more days,’ a different voice says, and Syaoran looks up to see Fai has joined them without him noticing. ‘Kuro-sama, I’m sure Princess Tomoyo won’t mind,’ he tells Kurogane with a soft smile, and then turns back to Syaoran and Sakura. ‘We’ll leave at the end of the week. Is that alright?’
And the two of them nod, relieved. ‘Thank you, Fai-san,’ Sakura says, and steps in for a hug. She hugs Kurogane, too. And then Syaoran. And somehow, somehow, it doesn’t quite feel like the end anymore. Somehow, it feels like stepping stone, like the beginning of something new.
And Syaoran hopes, prays (but does not make a wish, he’s learned that lesson), that these last few days won’t be the last, that they’ll be able to see each other again one day.
