Damn man they take out all the stops with the action scenes in this remake.
The Han’ya and Kenshin fight was awesome. Love the rotating camera angles during the fight. Han’ya’s “returning the children” backstory was also horrific. As Kenshin said, you’d think someone like that would understand what Megumi’s been through and try to help not just enable the situation.
The sound design during the Sano and Shikijo fight was crazy! Those punches and headbutts had so much force behind them and you could really feel them with each blow. Sano’s speech gave me chills, then breaking Shikijo’s hands and knocking him out.. chef’s kiss, what a fight.
So far throughout the two battles with Oniwaban members, you really get the sense they aren’t bad, just misguided and as Sano said, blinded by their own strength. They should be using it to help people, not make things worse.
Kenshin and Aoshi next week, so hype! As usual the remake is delivering very well.
Hahaha I remember the first time I found out he was actually around his 30s when I was still following the old anime series for Rurouni Kenshin back in the 90s. I was really surprised. And Kaoru is 17 I believe around this time.
But maaan... This brings back so many fond memories. I'm so happy they remade this anime. This was one of my childhood faves and Kenshin was one of my anime crushes back then ☺️
This is not dissing, its just that I find the direction they both went with was quite interesting
youtube
Old version op wasn’t trying to emphasize that Kenshin used to be a killer
It is also not heavily Kenshin oriented
it takes there time to introduce characters
and the last scene was Kenshin heading "home"... the new home that has his friend and Kaoru
andandand this is me as an animator .... that weapon sanosuke ?(forgive me it has been so long i forgot his name) is wielding, the animation nailed the HEAVY feeling
Also kenshin's sword fighting style feels.... like a real one that can happen in real life (but of course thats just in the OP)
youtube
the new version is heavily Kenshin oriented, other people are just....there
but they definitely made it look obvious that Kaoru is a light to him
they put emphasis on the two parts of Kenshin
differentiated with the type of sword that he's using (and showed in the background)
which is neat
the sword fighting style emphasized more on his speed and agility
and this might be me reading too much into it
but near the end where Kenshin is heading to the house,,,
he doesn’t walk in but turned back to look
as much as it can be just an anime trope to look cool (LOL)
it can also imply something? like he wont step into that house because of his past?
(the rest has spoiler and is totally just my thoughts :) )
I kind of liked that the old one did not emphasize much on kenshin being a killer as a first opening (albeit not intentional)
cause the whole story started with knowing the fact but finding it hard to associate him as a killer
and as the story progressed we gradually realized how much of the past...affected him
Like if I were to design the series opening
op1 would be the present him more (and a smear of his past)
op2 assuming it will be the kyoto arc, I would do what this opening is doing, with his present and past coming back and forth
op3 would be heavily the past for the later arc (with a bit of present that can be... snatched away)
butbutbut
I like that this new opening didn’t let him totally head into the house,
cause he is not fully there yet at this stage, not until later in the story when kaoru tells him "welcome home".
Anyhow, the new Kenshin looks promising but i need to finish my assignments first before I can enjoy the remake
As I thought, Dr. Elder was hiding her gender due to fear of not getting taken seriously. Really felt bad for her when she talked about how people would take the nurses and assistants more seriously than her even though she’s a doctor.
A literal east vs west battle between the last samurai of Japan and the last knight of Europe, pretty cool showdown and the contrasting styles were awesome. That spiral attack where bro contorted his entire body was insane. In the end, of course Kenshin came out on top, but the lengths that the old man would go to get dr. Elder out of “his turf”.. using a biological weapon is crazy. Good thing they were able to stop him before he unleashed smallpox.
In the end, espiral and Kenshin are both the last of a dying breed and were able to find common ground. Epsiral going to America with Dr.Elder seemed like a pretty convenient plot point lol, but I guess given people’s skepticism towards women in medicine you can never have enough security.
Bonus manga chapters were adopted very well and I think they set up the Kyoto arc well. Hype
