Watched the Pride parade (in SF) a couple times today on TV. (Hulu was highlighting it! Go Hulu!) This past week I was thinking how I'm way too middle-aged and disabled to feel like I wish I could go to Pride. And it's true? But I still felt left out enough that I needed to watch it on TV.
Way too much crowds (can you say super-spreader event? NO one was wearing a mask), too much walking for my tired old body. I'm glad I did a few when I was younger and still abled. Got to see the Quilt the last time it was able to fit on the Washington (DC) mall, too.
But nowadays, Pride is mostly felt in my little ol' queer heart here in my cozy little home.

a celebration of queerness in the modern day
savory meatsmoke drifts around a
street corner : in line, i
kiss my pink-and-blue-smeared lover
over custard bao.
we find a friend in front of the theater. we are
19 and buying
jell-o shots from a stranger with a
cooler: we are 19 and playful and happy to be
queer : i am happy to be in love, and i hold
onto a margarita when the pavement first
rattles :
turn away from the jewelry stand. see
the people running : rainbows
flapping madly, eyes too
wide : my love
grabs my wrist and we
hit the asphalt : i glimpse the whites of our friend’s
eyes when he
peels in another direction :
we drive ourselves against
a still-dancing crowd like
caged animals : we
push and we shove and we
run, and we keep running, and i am
still holding my cup : i am still
waiting for a gunshot : pride ends
in the laundromat where a friend
crouches beneath the table
just in case,
and my lover, terrified, removes a binder
from their
bruised chest.

So SF Pride was a huge mess Sunday. Here's what I experienced.
I was on one of the side streets near the middle of the main event, my group had stopped in this less crowded area to smoke and look at some of the nearby vendors. A couple of my friends were wandering around nearby and another was just coming back from the bathrooms. I was standing alone against a wall with everyone's bags.
I watched as the initial crowd began to turn the corner, so many people running, panicking. I had no idea what was going on, but the tension and fear was palpable. I scooped up everyone's stuff just as the crowd began to hit my location. Luckily my friends grouped up quickly, we grabbed each other and began to run as well.
None of us knew what was going on, just that we were running from something and nobody wanted to find out what. As we ran from the main event we heard people around us shouting about it being a shooter, an assault, or that someone had a weapon. We feared for our lives. We were running away with the knowledge that at any moment we could get shot or hurt or worse. It was one of the most terrifying moments of my life. Just running, not knowing what was going on, not knowing if we were safe, not knowing if I'd be making it home.
We made it out of the event, and kept going for a while. We wanted to get as far as possible on foot, we didn't feel comfortable going back. We didn't know what had happened but police were showing up and ambulances we're beginning to arrive. We didn't feel it was safe to go back so we decided to simply leave and go home. We took a Lyft to the pier then walked to a nearby Bart station. We all got home safely, unharmed, and with all our stuff.
The official statement from SF Pride is that someone near the main stage sprayed mace into the crowd which caused the panic. That may be true, but I still believe there was more to it. Rumors persist that someone pulled a gun (tho police found no evidence a shooting took place), that multiple fights broke out, and that someone set off a smoke bomb.
My friend who was coming back from the bathrooms at the time claimed to see a large amount of smoke, more than the food vendors could produce, but not enough to be from a fire. It would make sense that the noise and smoke from a smoke bomb would cause the crowd to panic and run, especially if it was in combination with someone spraying mace and fights breaking out.
Regardless of what happened, or what caused the initial panic, it was one of the most horrifying moments of my life. Seeing this huge crowd turn the corner, running, panicked and afraid. My friend grabbing my arm and tugging me into the fray, frantically trying to make sure we were all together as we tried to escape some unknown danger. This was my 3rd SF Pride, and it may just be my last. I've never been scared for my life like that before. SF Pride used to be such a special thing for me. The joy of being surrounded by other queer people and feeling fully comfortable in my own skin is now tainted by the memory of running for my life. I hope nothing like that ever happens again.
For so many people, one of my friends included, this was their first pride. Now all they know when they think of pride is fear and panic and the desire to never return because of this. The first two prides I went to were so much fun, such amazing experiences. Now I'm not sure if I'll ever have that again.
Aside from all that tho I heard good things about Saturday's celebration. During uncertain times like these it's important that we come together and support each other, that we stay strong and proud together. I refuse to let this event keep me from celebrating next year, even if I decide to go to a smaller event and not SF Pride. Hopefully next year will be better.
