Spellling & the Mystery School, Spellling (2023)
Tumblr media
While perfectly pleasant (it could not help but be, the original tunes being so solid), I am left confused about the purpose of these Spellling re-recordings. None of the versions substantially differ from the originals and certainly not enough to warrant a new release – could these slight tweaks not have been saved as surprises for live shows?

2023 has really started to pick up the pace in the last two months. finally, some big releases and teases for big upcoming projects. there’s a lot of stuff i’m excited for. also since new music friday was on the last day of june, some of the tracks released that day will show up on here lol. also also please go listen to George Clanton’s new album!!! i talked about two of the singles in this series before and the whole album is wonderful. feel free to follow me on rate your music and twitter (i’m not calling it X)
Tumblr media
“Tied Up!” - Genesis Owusu
◇ featured on STRUGGLER - Genesis Owusu (not yet released) ◇ genres: funk, neo-soul
I loved Genesis Owusu’s last album and had no idea he had already been dropping singles for the follow-up. “Tied Up!” sees him going down a heavier funk direction and I love it. This track is so much fun and the background vocals have been stuck in my head constantly. Can’t wait for the album!
Tumblr media
‧₊˚✧ BEST SONG OF THE MONTH ✧˚₊‧ “dazies” - yeule
◇ featured on softscars - yeule (not yet released) ◇ genres: shoegaze, noise pop
These latest singles from yeule are my favorite stuff I’ve heard from them so far. “dazies” is another noisy, dreamy cut from their upcoming album. The shifts in sound always hit hard and the song never feels unbalanced at all. If you loved their last single “sulky baby”, I’m sure you will find something to love with this track as well. If the upcoming album sounds like this then I’m very excited. Could be an album of the year contender.
Tumblr media
“Under the Sun” - SPELLLING
◇ featured on SPELLLING & the Mystery School - SPELLLING (not yet released) ◇ genres: darkwave, art rock
I’m a little unsure what this new SPELLLING album is. It seems as though she’s following up her incredible 2021 album, The Turning Wheel, with an album reworking tracks from her previous albums. She dropped new versions of “Under the Sun” (from 2019′s Mazy Fly) and “Cherry” (previously known as “Choke Cherry Horse from her 2017 album Pantheon of Me). I think both tracks are worthwhile, but “Under the Sun” is my favorite of the two. This new version has a bit more force behind it. Everything just feels like a step-up from the original. Like most, I would prefer an album of new material from SPELLLING, but I’m still interested to see how this new album plays out.
Tumblr media
“Winter Has Arrived” - This Is The Glasshouse
◇ featured on As Small As Ants - This Is The Glasshouse ◇ genres: chamber pop, indie rock
As Small As Ants is one of my new favorite albums of the year and it deserves so much more attention. A nice blend of chamber pop and indie rock with a ton of cool instrumentation. “Winter Has Arrived” is probably my favorite track on the album. It features a somber vocal performance backed by a soft bass and (i think) some cello picking before ramping up into a beautiful blend of various woodwind instruments. For a project on this small scale, the musicianship is incredibly impressive. Please give this album a listen!
Tumblr media
“Rest” - ANOHNI and the Johnsons
◇ featured on My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross - ANOHNI and the Johnsons ◇ genre: soul
My Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross was my introduction to ANOHNI’s work and after hearing it, I definitely need to go through her previous work. “Rest”, and really the whole album, are driven by her soulful voice. The backing band are very good, but the vocals are easily what stand out the most. The subtle dips in her voice add so much life to these already passionate songs. This track features a lot of bluesy elements as well which are a nice touch. “Rest” perfectly showcases what makes this album great.
Tumblr media
“Making The Band (Danity Kane)” - Earl Sweatshirt
◇ genre: cloud rap
This new Earl Sweatshirt single is maybe the most energetic he’s sounded in years. His last few projects have leaned towards a more deadpan, lethargic vibe which honestly worked really well, but this change of pace is very much welcome. The beat has so much energy to it and, while Earl will never be the most bombastic rapper, he really shines on it. I’m not sure if this single is a one-off or if this is leading up to a new project, but either way this song is worth checking out!
Tumblr media
“Super Shy” - NewJeans
◇ featured on Get Up - NewJeans ◇ genre: k-pop
I’m not gonna pretend to be well-versed in K-Pop, but I have really enjoyed everything I’ve heard from NewJeans. Especially “Super Shy.” This track is a short and sweet banger that doesn’t waste any time at all. The chorus has been stuck in my head ever since I heard it for the first time. Definitely give this a listen.
Tumblr media
“Vampire Empire” - Big Thief
◇ genres: folk rock, indie rock
Big Thief have released the long-awaited studio version of “Vampire Empire” which had previously been premiered on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. This version polarized a lot of fans who had fallen in love with that version, but I think this a great track regardless. The studio version has a bit more of a bite to it. The verses and the chorus all feel so cathartic. Adrianne Lenker’s songwriting also, as per usual, adds to it. Ever since their previous album, I think Big Thief have really come into their own.
Tumblr media
“TELEKENISIS” - Travis Scott
◇ featured on UTOPIA - Travis Scott ◇ genres: experimental hip hop, alternative r&b
The long awaited fourth studio album from Travis Scott is finally here! I’m not gonna pretend to be an expert on his work, before this past week I had only listened to Rodeo, but I thoroughly enjoyed UTOPIA. “TELEKENISIS” is my favorite track on the album currently. It is one of the darker sounding cuts on the album and I think it works very well. It also has standout features from SZA and Future. Some ideas on UTOPIA don’t feel fully realized, but I think this song is not an example of that at all.
Tumblr media
“What Was I Made For?” - Billie Eilish
◇ featured on Barbie The Album ◇ genre: singer-songwriter
Billie Eilish’s contribution to Greta Gerwig’s great new Barbie movie is probably the strongest on the entire soundtrack. Eilish always shines on somber cuts like these. Her shift into more acoustic instrumentation on some tracks on her last album and especially the Guitar Songs EP has been really interesting. I don’t think this track is as good as the material on that EP, but its still very nice and the way its used in the film secured its spot here.
Tumblr media
“Rush” - Troye Sivan
◇ featured on Something To Give Each Other - Troye Sivan (not yet released) ◇ genre: dance-pop, house
I went into this track with low expectations because I haven’t really loved the stuff I’ve heard from Troye Sivan, but I’ll be damned this is a really fun dance track. Probably also helps that its very nice to hear upbeat queer dance music in the face of the shit going on in the world right now. Not much else to say about this song really. I hope the rest of his upcoming album is as good as this.
Tumblr media
“vampire” - Olivia Rodrigo
◇ featured on GUTS - Olivia Rodrigo (not yet released) ◇ genres: singer-songwriter, alt-pop
The first single leading up Olivia Rodrigo’s sophomore album is one of her strongest tracks to date. The best songs on SOUR had a bite to them and “vampire” has the most bite (ha ha) out of any of her material thus far. Despite occasionally feeling over-produced, her lyrics feel very earnest. This breakup ballad has fire to it.
Tumblr media
“Flex” - Courting
◇ genres: indie rock, post-punk revival
Courting are another interesting band apart of the UK post-punk revival scene. Their debut album last year had a lot of similarities with their contemporaries, but they have a knack for big choruses. “Flex” is no different. If you enjoy this sound, there is plenty to love here.

Best of 2023 - Albums
Unbelievable year ... Fallen pop stars are returning, long time not seen artists are turning up in a best possible shape, producers making music under their own names, ... First of all I really enjoyed a few soundtracks this year especially Anthony Willis's Saltburn and Arnaud Rebotini's L'lle Rouge. Surprisingly I listened again on repeat a few DJ mixes too. Danny Tenaglia's new Global Underground was a pure treasure, James Zabiela's home session just made me dance for an hour in the living room, as well as Andy Butler's energetic set did too.
Tumblr media
01. Roisin Murphy - Hit Parade - "If Hit Parade isn’t Murphy’s best album, it’s certainly her wildest and weirdest. Nowhere else is the scale of her ambition more evident than on the percussive and atmospheric “Free Will.” Murphy says she doesn’t believe in free will but that you should “just make believe that you can write the play” anyway. It’s yet another indelible statement that couldn’t come from anyone else." - Slant Magazine
02. Rebecca Black - Let Her Burn - "An acceptable stretch of Let Her Burn gives Black a chance to reform a persona she had never had any control over until now. As fundamental a shift as perhaps expected, Black warrants this change of pace but there is something inevitable about how these perspectives are formed and how retaliation to reactionary dogpiling a decade ago comes to the forefront. Working hard and pushing through with this half-hour debut LP is exceptional, with spotty highs and consistently solid mixes that give those electronic undercurrents a beat-worthy working. Destroy Me is a crucial highlight in getting to the core of reinvention but also in engaging with how buoyed Let Her Burn is by how much of an opposition it takes to the early works. Black has let her burn, whatever “her” was. Let Her Burn razes and destroys as much as it can, and it works as a successful, credible debut." - Cult Following
03. Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Hana
04. Clark - Sus Dog
05. Everything But The Girl - Fuse
06. Depeche Mode - Memento Mori
07. Mermaidens - Mermaidens
Tumblr media
08. Kesha - Gag Order
09. Anna B Savage - in|FLUX - "So as a follow up to A Common Turn, this does feel like an album where, lyrically and thematically, we are dealing with an artist who has battled some of the previous demons, accepted the daily flux of life, and found a way to focus on the moments when life feels most complete. But in a musical context – Anna also seems to have taken that feeling, that love of contradiction, into the songs. At moments explosively ecstatic, at others wrought with emotion – and filled with influences and sounds from areas not explored on the previous LP – the album brings a bunch of disparate sounds and feelings together to create a powerful and impressive whole. Most impressive of all is the fact that, after an album that sent Picky Bastards into a spin for the whole of 2021, Anna has released something as good if not better." - Picky Bastards
10. HMLTD - The Worm
11. JMSN - Soft Spot
12. Orbital - Optical Delusion - "It’s an album of unlikely collaborations. Day One features the operatic talents of Dina Ipavic, while Are You Alive, sung by Lily Wolter of Penelope Isles, floats into moodier, more analog territory. Best of all are The New Abnormal (Golden Girls’ Kinetic turned inside out) and the anti-gammon state of the nation rant of Dirty Rats." - Record Collector
13. Spelling - SPELLLING & The Mystery School
14. Future Utopia - We Were We Still Are
15. CLT DRP - Nothing Clever, Just Feelings
16. Joy Wellboy - The Ones That Got Away
17. Pierre Rousseau - Twenty - Music for Etudes N°20 - Spring Summer 2022
18. Joyce Muniz - Zeitkapsel
Tumblr media
19. Emiliana Torrini & The Colorist Orchestra - Racing The Storm
20. Thomas Azier - The Inventory Of Our Desire
21. Sofia Kourtesis - Madres
22. Not Waving - The Place I've Been Missing
23. Restive Plaggona - Ignis
24. Deichkind - Neues Vom Dauerzustand
25. Daughter - Stereo Mind Game
26. Daði Freyr - I Made an Album
27. Yves Tumor - Praise A Lord Who Chews But Which Does Not Consume; (Or Simply, Hot Between Worlds)
28. Surgeon - Crash Recoil - "Crash Recoil is probably about as close to a live Surgeon record as we’re ever going to get. Child views producing and performing as two disparate disciplines, which they are, and he goes about each in a very different way. This also means it’s about as close to a traditional pop/rock approach to writing and recording as you’re likely to find from an electronic producer, woodshedding tracks on the road and sharpening them to a diamond sheen. More bands and producers should think of adopting the approach as it clearly can yield stunning results, as evidenced by this glorious offering." - Spectrum Culture
29. Duran Duran - DANSE MACABRE
30. When Saints Go Machine - Rosy
31. Young Fathers - Heavy Heavy
32. Maps - Counter Melodies
33. Laurent Garnier - 33 tours et puis s'en vont
34. Benedikt Frey - Fastlane
Tumblr media
35. ANOUK - Deena and Jim
36. Anthony Naples - Orbs - "The New York producer once known for muscular house and techno continues to drift into the ether, channeling ’90s chillout and dub techno into his singular vision." - Pitchfork
37. James Holden - Imagine This Is A High Dimensional Space Of All Possibilities
38. Hifi Sean & David McAlmont - Happy Ending
39. Tirzah - trip9love...???
40. Kelela - Raven
