I gotta talk about in the heights, yall.

So, its beautiful from a cinematic point, but allow me to share with you guys two texts I sent my friend while watching.

the cinematography>>>>> any of the fucking writing in this film

That could literally be the review, honestly. The cinematography is truly a wonder within this film, but the writing is uncomfortable at best and a crime at worst.

Although, some actors are more to blame than others. *cough* Melissa I know you can do better i've seen Sacudete Las Penas please *cough*

I, like many others, am hurt about the songs they cut. The movie is 2 1/2 hours long and they definitely had room to cut things. However, I'm not reviewing In The Heights (2008), I'm reviewing In The Heights (2021). So lets talk about that.

I am a little hurt by how the light actresses were. It felt very "We did the paper bag test" to me.

It was even a problem with the male cast in my opinion. Other than Sonny and arguably Kevin, It was all smelling very lightskinned. I read Lin's apology, and thats where I took issue. The conversation is not just around afro-latine people being hurt. There are Latine people with no african blood in them that are darkskinned, and therefore severely under-represented in the film.

As for the plot.

The lottery plotline was, for lack of a better phrase, FUCKING WEIRD.

They sang a huge song, did one of the best numbers in the film and then went "Oh Well" until the last twenty minutes of the movie. What the fuck.

Abuela did not plan on dying, so there is no good reason she would not have told Usnavi as soon as she knew she had won. She was expecting to go to the DR with him, so why would she keep the ticket a secret?

Nina and Benny's relationship was cute, but lacked the screentime for them to have the best two duets in the movie.

Opposite situation with Kevin, he had too big of a story for him to not have a single song.

All that criticism aside, Sonny and Nina talking at the protest and his little "I was gonna be like you" FUCKING BROKE MY HEART OH MY GOD.

Ariana Greenblatt played young Nina, having been just as incredible as she was in Infinity War. I'm saying it before she grows up to be the next Zendaya, I called it when Stuck In The Middle started on Disney Channel. Her dancing around the block really gave such atmosphere and youth to Nina's character the whole movie, and I wish she would have appeared in big moments for Nina. Maybe in the corner of the restaurant when she lies to her dad, or in the hallway when she storms out from dinner, just something.

"Little acts of dignity" OUCH still doesn't replace everything I know BUT OUCH

And of course, It would be a crime to finish this review without a word to Paciencia y Fe/Alabanza. Paciencia y Fe was some of the most gorgeous cinematography I've ever seen. The performance was emotional but still so vocally proficient on Olga's part, but of course, it's always been her role. The dancers in that song are nothing to sneeze at either.

Alabanza hurt more seeing people mourn with Usnavi, not at a funeral, but in their home. It feels like a family. WHICH EVERYTHING I KNOW WOULD HAVE PROPELLED

All in all, a beautiful, if not confusing film. Here's to wishing Anthony Ramos the best possible career. He lacked mention in my review only because there is nothing I could say that has gone unsaid about his groundbreaking performance as Usnavi. Sorry Lin, but Usnavi can sing now.

Debes mantenerte fiel a tí mismo, aunque en el camino te encuentres: piedras, veredas truncadas, malos ratos en el trayecto, ventiscas, sonidos que hagan tú miedo mayor por transitar, montañas a subir, porque al final valdrá la pena. Cuando ví el anime Ballroom e Youkoso me encantó, tanto que quise crear una historia relacionada con el baile deportivo

Al principio Kirie Jena iba a hacer un personaje secundario interpretando a una maestra de baile. Imaginé cómo sería su origen es decir que la motivo a dedicarse a esto poco a poco ví en ella una historia no solo de un instante sino también de una vida dedicada al baile 💃

El título es de la película mexicana "Sacudete Las Penas" lo ví un día en la televisión cuando estaba haciendo limpieza en mi cuarto; la película me encantó y de paso me ayudó tanto con el concepto de la historia que con el título

Kirie Jena era una joven que se enamoró del baile deportivo a primera vista y ahora es una mujer que participa en las competencias

Por cierto, esta historia no se limita con solo el baile de salón sino también otros tipos de bailes y dancas 🕴️🕺🩰
