I love you people who are unapologetically fans of niche, obscure or old things
To every artist, writer, or blogger out here making art, stories and posts about the books I loved in middle school, the shows I loved as a child, the random bands I like, obscure video games, old camp bad movies, and anything else niche, weird and obscure I love you. Wether you’re writing fanfiction, making art, headcannons, AUs, or just shitposting I’m kissing you lovingly on the forehead and listening to you intensely

So, today I read two books, though only one of them was from the book wall--I'm trying to reread a bunch of books this year, so I can stop the whole "you have to buy a new copy if you want to re-read it" thing I've had going on since the book wall hit triple digits.
So the first thing I (re)read was Sammy Keyes and the Hotel Thief, and man, when it comes to childhood books, Sammy Keyes was the GOAT. She was, to elementary school me, the coolest motherfucker on the planet. She is still, to adult, elementary-school-teacher me, the coolest motherfucker on the planet. I do intend to re-read the whole series, in order, because I'm pretty sure I never actually read them in order.
Ghosts of the Shadow Market I have more complex feelings about. The Shadowhunter books were also childhood books, for me; I think I read City of Bones when I was maybe a fifth grader? All I'm saying, Alec Lightwood was the first gay character I ever read about. This book I half cared about, half really didn't. When I cared, I was really into it. When I didn't care (mostly, when we were so focused on like, Jem and Tessa because even though I did read TID I don't really care about it at this point), I really didn't care. But Clare either sprinkles something real hard into her writing or I just have nostalgia glasses on, because... man. When I cared. Shit was magical.
BOOK WALL STATUS AS OF JAN. 1: 2112
BOOK WALL HIGH: 2236
BOOK WALL LOW: 2108
CURRENT BOOK WALL STATUS: 2213
BOOKS READ THIS YEAR: 145

So I adore the Sammy Keyes series, I kept up w/ it in elementary and middle school and recently I got back into it thru a reread of the series, tho I’ve been doing it with the audiobooks. And I don’t see people really talk about it (but that’s bc this fandom is kind of dead lol), but the audiobooks are so good! You can really tell that the narrator developed such distinctive voices for the characters as they recorded more books.
There are so many snippets of the audiobooks that just feel iconic to me bc the va put so much work into them! The showdown in sin city in particular really feels like the peak of their performance (probably bc imo it’s the peak of the series too), it’s so good! The iconic Sammy monologue about all of the crazy stuff she did to track her mom down, her mom’s shear confusion at why Sammy would think she would run away to Oregon of all places lol, and Sammy’s internal monologue thru her ups and downs in Las Vegas are just so well done.
The va really makes it feel like this is the inner monologue and life of a middle schooler, their voice doesn’t feel out of place at all, which isn’t the case for as many audiobooks as I would hope. If anyone wants to do a reread of the series, I highly recommend the audiobooks, they’re on another level.

like. literally. what the fuck is this shitty cover with a goddamn magnifying glass and magazine-cut font (it's an adventure series first and foremost NOT a mystery!!) and stock photo of a blonde kid.
look at the original cover! it's a very nice piece of art! and it showcases the shadow city! like you can tell that the artist had some fucking understanding of what the book was about. whereas i have doubts that anyone involved in the new edition's cover read the book at all.

Sammy Keyes Re-read
Hey everyone, I have decided to start the journey of re-reading the SK books from Hotel Thief to Kiss Goodbye.
Currently on chapter 5 of Hotel Thief and I feel so much nostalgia already. I am planning on posting more often (as often as I can lol) as I go through each book. Let me know if you have any suggestions for posts!

Congrats to the ultimate winner of the Hot & Vintage Movie Men Tournament, Mr. Toshiro Mifune! May he live happily and well where the sun always shines, enjoying the glories of a battle hard fought.
Tumblr media
A loving farewell to all of our previous contestants, who are now banished to the shadow realm and all its dark joys and whispered horrors—I hear there's a picnic on the village green today. If you want to remember the fallen heroes, you can find them all beneath the cut.
What happens next? I'll be taking a break of two weeks to rest from this and prep for the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament. I'll still be around but only minimally, posting a few last odes to the hot men before transitioning into a little early ladies content, just like I did with this last tournament. The submission form for the Hot & Vintage Ladies tournament will remain up for one more week (closing February 21st), so get your submissions in for that asap! Once the form closes, there will be one more week of break. The first round of the Hot & Vintage Ladies Tournament will be posted on February 29th, as Leap Year Day seems like a fitting allusion to leaping into these ladies' arms.
Thanks for being here! Enjoy the two weeks off, and send me some great propaganda.
