The Nature of Art exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg merges art from the museum’s collection with loaned works to explore- “art’s crucial role in our evolving quest to understand our relationship with nature and our place in the cosmos”.
One of the benefits of an encyclopedic museum is that visitors have the opportunity to experience art throughout history, and to revisit works that resonate with them. For the section titled Artist as Curator, Sarah Meyohas and Christian Sampson chose pieces from the museum’s collection to pair with their own work.
From the museum-
At first glance, perhaps, these may seem like unusual combinations, but upon deeper contemplation, their selections reveal complementary artistic intents. For instance, Meyohas and Georgia O’Keeffe share an interest in close looking, particularly in finding new ways to examine underappreciated aspects of the natural world. Sampson, influenced by the California Light and Space Movement, is interested in current scholarship that suggests the hazy fog found in Claude Monet’s work is an early depiction of air pollution, offering an entirely new perspective on the artist’s representations of light.
Sampson also created the four-part installation, Tempus volat, hora fugit, on view until 2025 at the museum.
Below are some of the works from additional sections of the exhibition.

Postcommodity, “kinaypikowiyâs”, 2021, Four 30.5-metre industrial debris booms
Postcommodity is an interdisciplinary art collective comprised of Cristóbal Martínez (Genizaro, Manito, Xicano), and Kade L. Twist (Cherokee).
About Postcommodity’s work, kinaypikowiyâs, (seen above) from the museum-
This work is composed of debris booms, used to catch and hold environmental contaminants such as garbage, oil, and chemicals. The colors of the booms correspond to different types of threats— red (flammable), yellow (radioactive), blue (dangerous), and white (poisonous)-in the labeling system for hazardous materials. To indigenous peoples, these are shared medicine colors that carry knowledge, purpose and meaning throughout the Western Hemisphere. Suspended like hung meat, the booms represent a snake that has been chopped into four parts. Each part represents an area of the colonial map of the Western Hemisphere: South America, Central America, North America, and all of the surrounding islands. The title, kinaypikowiyâs, is a Plains Cree word, meaning snake meat. Divided by borders, Postcommodity asserts that all people living in the Americas are riding on the back of this snake.

Duke Riley's Reclaimed ocean plastic sculptures and “Tidal Fool” wallpaper
Duke Riley’s work, which was previously shown at Brooklyn Museum, addresses issues of environmental pollution by using discarded plastics found in the ocean and other waterways to create new work inspired by the past. You can hear him discuss his work in this video.
From the museum-
Inspired by the maritime museum displays he saw while a child growing up in New England, Riley’s scrimshaw series is a cutting observation of capitalist economies-historic and today-that endanger sea life. The sculptures were created for the fictional Poly S. Tyrene Memorial Maritime Museum, and are contemporary versions of sailors’ scrimshaw, or delicately ink-etched whale teeth and bone. Riley first thought about using plastic as an ode to scrimshaw when he saw what he thought was a whale bone washed up on the beach in Rhode Island; it turned out to be the white handle of a deck brush. Riley regularly removes trash from beaches and waterways, and often uses this refuse in his work.
Riley collaborated with Brooklyn-based Flavor Paper to create these two custom wallpapers for his solo exhibition DEATH TO THE LIVING, Long Live Trash at the Brooklyn Museum. Tidal Fool exhibits Riley’s trademark humor in the face of devastating water pollution; notice the Colt 45-guzzling mermaid. Wall Bait vibrantly references Riley’s meticulous fishing lures, which he crafts from refuse found in the waters around New York City.

Daniel Lind-Ramos,"Centinelas de la luna nueva (Sentinels of the New Moon)", 2022-2023, Mixed media
From the museum about this work-
In Centinelas de la luna nueva, he evokes the elders of the mangroves, spiritual beings who watch over and ensure the health of this essential coastal tree. Mangroves are the basis for a complex ecosystem that shelters sea life and serves as the first line of defense in the tropical storms that batter the sub-tropics -including Florida.
Lind-Ramos's practice reflects the vibrant culture of his native Loíza, Puerto Rico, by honoring local agriculture, fishing, cooking, and masquerade. His sculptures also evoke Hurricane Maria (2017), the COVID-19 pandemic, and ongoing environmental degradation. Lind-Ramos is committed to the survival and sustenance of Afro-Taíno traditions and people of the Puerto Rican archipelago. However, his art engages the global community through shared emotions, parallel histories, and the commonality of human experience.
The next post will discuss two other artists in the exhibition, Brookhart Jonquil and Janaina Tschäpe.

O RESGATE DO SOLDADO RYAN - Filme sobre a Segunda Guerra Mundial
Tumblr media
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN O RESGATE DO SOLDADO RYAN (Film by Steven Spielberg)
A história do combatente Frederick Niland (o nome real do militar; no filme, Ryan).
Tumblr media
Imagens do Set de Filmagem e do Filme

Florida’s Invasive Species Problem Leads to State Reptile Ban
By Joan Sumney, Robert Morris University Class of 2021
April 9, 2021
Tumblr media
Florida is well known for many of its unique characteristics. From its warm weather and sunshine to the wildlife that resides within the state, many individuals flock to Florida either for a short vacation or for a permanent relocation. When one travels to the sunshine state, it is certain that he or she will experience hot weather and an abundance of diverse wildlife, especially reptiles. However, while the state is famous for its reptile population, the state’s legislators are working towards the goal of banning a long list of nonnative reptiles.
Florida weather is perfect for many activities. In addition to hitting the beach, a popular pastime includes exploring the wildlife. However, over the years, nonnative species have taken over the natural habitat and are jeopardizing the lives of the species that belong to this area. One of the biggest problem-species includes the Burmese python which is responsible for consuming mammals as large as deer and also spreading a parasite that chokes native snakes to death (Waymer, 2021). The Burmese python is a big problem in the state because, as a result of its sheer size, the snake consumes a lot of the native mammals in the area. This itself is not healthy for the ecosystem, however, along with the overconsumption of indigenous species, the pythons also carry a parasite that it has spread to native snakes in the area. This parasite, while it may not bother the python, kills the native snakes that it infects. The introduction of the Burmese python to the Florida ecosystem causes a threat to many of the creatures that can be found there, not just the python’s prey. Another species of reptile that has invaded the Florida ecosystem includes the Green Iguana. Iguana digging wreaks havoc on the roads and homeowner plants across the state (Sampson, 2021). The invasive iguanas cause structural damages to roads which will cost the state a lot of money to repair and is dangerous for individuals to use. The population of iguanas has grown so out of control that the reptiles have been known to show up in residents’ toilets from time to time and has prompted the Florida Fishing and Wildlife Conservation Commission to prompt individuals to shoot the creatures on-site in an effort to control the population in the wild (Pittman, 2021). The invasion of green iguanas in the Florida ecosystem has become such a problem for homeowners and the ecosystem that the FWC has resorted to encouraging individuals to kill any member of the species it sees. One may question how these exotic reptiles made their way to the Floridian ecosystem in the first place. Individuals attempt to raise these species as pets and then, for one reason or another, decide that owning these animals is too much work and release the animal into the wild (Orlando Sentinel Editorial Board, 2021). Individuals buy these creatures with the intention of raising them as a pet and then realize that raising a reptile such as a python can involve more effort than originally anticipated. As a result, these individuals will release the creature into the wild instead of trying to find the animal a new home. In order to stop this practice, the FWC has introduced “pet amnesty days” where owners who no longer wish to care for their exotic pets may turn the animals into the commission where they will go to zoos and qualified adopters (Torrent, 2011 and Waymer, 2021). The FWC has attempted to reduce the practice of releasing exotic pets into the wild by providing an alternative for owners. This alternative ensures that the pets are cared for and that the reptile is not turned loose on the unsuspecting natural wildlife. Nevertheless, nonnative species have been set loose into the ecosystem, either by accident or purposely. With the invasion of these reptiles and the damage that they cause, the FWC has decided to impose a ban on the possession and breeding of sixteen different species of reptiles (Sampson, 2021). In order to try to control the population of invasive reptiles that have made their new home in the Florida ecosystem, the FWC has voted to place a ban on these species so that individuals can no longer possess these creatures and potentially set them free onto the Florida wildlife. While this will cause some problems for some individuals that have made a living off of these creatures and have a genuine interest in keeping their pets, the FWC has granted some leniency. The restrictions will not go into place until 2024 and will allow owners to keep their pets for the remainder of the animals’ lives so long as owners obtain a no-cost permit and adhere to guidelines regarding enclosures (Sampson, 2021). The imposed ban will not take place right away which will allow individuals who have made their livelihood in breeding and selling these exotic creatures time to make necessary changes to their businesses. In addition, the restrictions do not require pet owners to get rid of their animals. Owners may keep their reptiles as long as they obtain a permit. As a result of the ban, however, pet owners will not be able to replace their animal after it dies. Additionally, the FWC requires that owners have the appropriate enclosures and tagging procedures to avoid the escape of these pets (Calvert, 2021). The commission, while not forcing residents to give up their pets, does the best that it can to ensure that no more of these reptiles make an escape into the wild. This ban on exotic creatures has caused some unrest in the reptile community. In a virtual meeting discussing the restrictions, callers across the nation chimed in to voice their dissent (Pittman, 2021). The decision to ban these reptiles has been met with disagreement from individuals all over the country. However, while there has been much disagreement with the restrictions, the FWC has voted to restrict these species in the interest of the wellbeing of the environment (Sampson, 2021). The commission recognizes that many individuals will be affected by the decision, however, in the long run, it has decided that the restriction is necessary. The commission spends more than $8 million per year to manage these creatures which some individuals, such as Pedro Ramos, superintendent of the Everglades and Dry Tortugas national parks, claims would be a waste if the commission allowed these creatures to continue to destroy the indigenous species and their natural habitat (Sampson, 2021). The FWC spends millions of tax dollars in the interest of protecting the ecosystem, if the commission allows individuals to carry on with their current practices, all of the tax money spent will be a waste. The commission and its supporters argue that, without these restrictions, the problem will never be reduced.
Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s decision to ban the possession and breeding of nonnative reptiles was born out of necessity in order to preserve the state’s native wildlife. While there will be consequences for the individuals that this ban affects, the consequences of individuals’ negligence thus far have caused damage to the ecosystem. Florida is overrun by invasive species of reptiles and the FWC has decided that enough is enough.

In any case, last week I finished a project and then I picked up on my research again.
I don't know if you knew that I have de la Merced and de la Mercedes in my family tree. They arose in San Juan a very long time ago. In fact, I have traced them back to 1576 with a Pedro de la Merced.
Source: John J. Browne Ayes, Research Copyright John J. Browne Ayes. All Rights Reserved National and International. On this reference document, I am basing my theory that Melchior de Aponte was part of this family. You will also see Pedro de la Merced included in this list as well.
I had this little document stashed away in my file and notes within my family tree.
Then last week I decided to browse the many documents that are online within marriage in the cathedral of San Juan in Familysearch.org . I discovered two families that bore the surname de la Merced.
Pedro de la Merced was married to Dona Ana Moreno y Gomez, the daughter of, Alonso Moreno and his wife, Leonor Gomez.
Pedro and his wife had a son, Diego de la Merced y Moreno. He was married to: Paula de los Reyes.
Source: Marriages In The Cathedral of San Juan Online at Family Search.org.
They were married, 7 April of 1691.
Date: 7 de Abril de 1691
Minister: Licenciado Don Juan de Rivafrecha, Cura
Groom: Diego de la Merced de Color Mulatto
Born in San Juan
Born in San Juan
The next family was quite interesting because of where they came from.
Same Source:
Date: 7 de Septiembre de 1700
Minister: Pedro zenteno, cura de catedral
Groom: Juan de la Merced
Natural de Ciudad de Bruselas, (Ayes, sic, Brussels, Belgium).
Parents Gaspar de Glancy y Maria de Sampson
(Ayes sic, Parents name was written, Gaspar de Glncy y Maria de Smpson).
Bride: Eugenia de Jesus Malave Morera
Bornl in San Juan
Padres: Benito Malave y Geronicia Morera
Note: Dispensada una amonestacion por el Sr. Ordinario Don Martin Calderon de la Varca
Testigos: Santiago de Acevedo, el Capitan Francisco Diaz y Juan Alonso Gonzalez Clerigo de Tonsura.
Brussels, Belgium was a Spanish territory that included the Nederlands.
Our Juan de la Merced's full name was John of the Mercy Glancy Sampson.
I did a research and their original country of origin was Ireland. I even picked up a family crest during my research. I also found out that the surname Glancy has also morphed into the name Clancy.
I can bet that John's de la Merced was a baptismal name that stuck throughout his lifetime in the public records and was passed down to his descendants because the Spanish always get tongue-tied when trying to pronounce Irish names.
So, having found these two families many questions have arisen. If anyone has found how my de la Mercedes from Yabucoa connected to these two families I would appreciate any information shared here.
After all, I've shared some very important information here this morning.
The furthest back I've gotten with my de la Merced was with one Dionecio de la Mercedes born abt 1785, in Yabucoa, PR. died bef 1899.
He was married to, 1: Casimira de Santiago 2: Maria Jose de los Rios Delgado. His marriage seemed to be a consentual one to Maria Jose because their son, Ramon Rios Delgado must have been a natural born son. Unfortunately his father didn't give him his surname or maybe Ramon was the son of a previous marriage. See how many questions arise!

Note
Funny, that you said that Maiden's knight Sampson and Sabrina have a nice flower scent surrounding them
Cause in South East Asian Cultures, specifically Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia (not sure with the Phillipines)
The smell of random jasmine flowers at night (with no jasmine flowers around) means a spirit (usually a female presenting one) is around and you have to be wary
Oh yeah! I heard about that somewhere. Very funky.
