Cine: Sweetheart (2021)

AJ (Nell Barlow) acompaña a su madre Tina (Jo Hartley) y a su hermana menor Dayna (Tabitha Byron) a pasar unas vacaciones en alguna playa británica, adonde se unirán Lucy, su hermana mayor embarazada (Sophia Di Martino, muy conocida por su labor en la serie de Marvel “Loki”), y su novio Steve (Samuel Anderson). No está muy feliz con la idea: activista combativa por el medio ambiente, lo más habitual en ella es su rostro severo, oculto entre un gorro playero y anteojos ahumados. Esta vez no será la excepción.

AJ, cuyo nombre verdadero es April, es, además, una lesbiana fuera del clóset y ya aceptada por toda su familia, pero con grandes problemas a la hora de socializar. Por eso es, para ella, toda una conmoción el hallar a Isla (Ella-Rae Smith), una guardavidas que no tarda en integrarla a su grupo de compañeros. Entre ambas surge un estado de camaradería que AJ desea se convierta en algo más, aunque sepa que, al finalizar las vacaciones, deberá regresar al mundo que dejó en suspenso por varios días.

La relación entre la adolescente y su madre es la clave de la película, escrita y dirigida por Marley Morrison. Una intensa dinámica de amor-odio que devela los ecos de una separación marital que aún duele, a la vez que manifiesta una nueva etapa de la búsqueda de la propia identidad, que no acaba con el reconocimiento de la naturaleza de la propia sexualidad.

“An Experience of a Lifetime”

           Andrew Sweeney has been a return customer at New York Comic-Con for the past few years, but this year’s Con had something a little different about it that drew Sweeney in more than previous years. Taking place from October 8th to the 11th, Andrew ran from panel to panel, meeting all sorts of actors, creators, cosplayers and more at the Javitz Center in New York City.

           “The experience was excellent overall. It was mellower and more organized this year,” Sweeney said. “I’m already planning on going next year.”

           For Sweeney, the culture of Comic-Con and the thrill of meeting people with similar interests as him is what makes the trip worth it.

          “I’m a big fan of Doctor Who and the cool thing about Comic-Con is all the great cosplayers portraying the characters,” Sweeney said. “Seeing all the different Doctors, his companions and the monsters they face in real-life is exciting.”  

           Sweeney typically ran into cosplayers, people dressing-up as characters from comic books, film and more, while waiting in line to meet an artist or waiting for a panel to begin. The cosplayers weren’t photo shy by a long shot, and were quite talkative as well.

           “We talked about their costume and the time and effort they put into making it. Even from the simplest orc to the giant Hulkbuster Iron Man that was walking around, every costume was unique and I found myself amazed at what I saw this year,” Sweeney said.

           Sweeney commented that someday he would like to don a costume and make an appearance at Comic-Con to give others the joyous experience he received this year.

           “I haven’t had time to work on a costume,” Sweeney said. “But I’d go as the 12th Doctor from Doctor Who if I could.”

           Sweeney commented that the Hulkbuster Iron Man cosplay was his favorite memory from New York Comic-Con 2015. “The thing took up the whole aisle and was ten feet tall and so well done.”

           Sweeney also took a picture with Samuel Anderson, who portrayed the character Danny Pink in the eighth season of Doctor Who, an experience he won’t soon forget.

           “I feel like you really need to attend Comic-Con at least once,” Sweeney said.

           “It’s an experience of a lifetime.”
