2018 has been an interesting year for my reading. I finished my goal of 100 books, which is always my goal, in about September. Since then I have really struggled with my reading. October until now has been a long slump with random bursts of reading at certain points. I’m hoping I can get my mojo back in the new year.
In terms of the books I’ve been reading, I feel like this has been a really good year for what I’ve been reading. I feel like I’ve read a lot of diverse and/or queer books and of course, I hope to read more next year. I think my standards have raised as well as I 5 starred only 19 books and 3 manga issues. There have been a lot of books I rated 4 stars because I liked them enough but there was just something missing that didn’t make them a favorite.
So without further ado, here are my favourites of 2018 with links to reviews:
Dumplin’ and Puddin’ by Julie Murphy
I can’t believe I read Dumplin’ only this year. I feel like it’s a story I’ve known for a long time. Probably because I related to it so much. Puddin’ was the perfect sister story.
Dear Martin by Nic Stone
Like THUG but also very different, they deal with similar topics but in such different ways. It’s short but packs a punch.
Hate to Want You by Alisha Rai
The Forbidden Hearts Series has become my favorite romance series I’ve read yet. I need to read the final novel but I don’t want it to be over. They deal with heartache and trauma in such a wonderful way.
Autoboyography by Christina Lauren
I’ve read this book twice this year, physically and through audio. It’s one of those books that is both melancholy and happiness. It deals with religion in a way I didn’t expect and the main characters are just so interesting.
Off the Ice by Avon Gale & Piper Vaughn
I read this book after I dropped out of studying to become a teacher. My whole life was turned upside down and this took my mind off it a bit.
Eliza and Her Monsters by Francescha Zappia
Another book that helped take my mind off things. And had such good anxiety rep for me.
Ramona Blue by Julie Murphy
This book is messy messy messy but in a good way for me. And I felt like it had some really good poverty representation.
Rich People Problems by Kevin Kwan
The perfect finish for one of my absolute favorite trilogies. I just didn’t want this story to end.
The Astonishing Colour of After by Emily X. R. Pan
At the time I read this it wasn’t a favourite. But as time went on I just couldn’t get it out of my head. It really left its mark on me. As someone who has been through a lot of grief and loss in her life this book was very cathartic.
From Twinkle with Love by Sandhya Menon
Another cute contemporary from Sandhya. Her characters are just so good and well developed. I’m so excited for her next book.
Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare
This book destroyed me and I’m honestly terrified to read Queen of Air and Darkness. It’s just sitting on my shelf because after this book I do not know if I want to know what’s going to happen.
A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir
I love every book in this series and I feel like Tahir doesn’t let me down. I just really do not know where it can go from here.
Tiny Pretty Things by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton
Like Gossip girl but instead of a bunch of white rich people it’s a bunch of diverse ballet dancers fighting for their spot over the white kids.
I’ll Be Gone In The Dark by Michelle McNamara
I won’t be writing a review for this. But just know that I love this book. I had a wee cry reading it. If you don’t know what this book is: the author died in 2016, in February 2018 this book was released, about her obsession with finding the Golden State Killer, in April he was finally caught. I wish Michelle had been able to see it.
Obsidio by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff
Another great finisher to a trilogy. I’m so happy with the way it ended.
What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli & Adam Silvera
I was worried about this collaboration but they didn’t let me down. This was a really sweet book that combined everything good about 2 of my fave authors.
Roomies by Christina Lauren
Read this within hours in the middle of a slump, it was so flipping addictive.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
My review hasn’t been posted for this yet but keep an eye out. This book had me sobbing on my flight to St. Lucia. I didn’t know what to expect with this book as so many of my twitter mutuals love it. But it really is that good. You really should read it.
