All Eyes Lead to the Truth | Season Four Master Post
Season four is one of the most beloved seasons of The X-Files, and we had a lot of fun exploring the background characters that helped make it so special!
Check out this thread to see all the characters we got to meet this season!
Tumblr media
Herrenvolk (4x01) | X
No one would remember him, and if they did, they would struggle to remember a name they were never told. The memory of his existence would remain occluded by the shadows he lived in.
Home (4x02) | Sheriff Andy Taylor
For protection, his father had said, as he pressed the unfamiliar cold metal into Taylor’s warm hand. To keep your family safe.
To keep your home safe.
He shuts the drawer. He isn’t ready for this reality, not now. Not yet.
Teliko (4x03) | Special Agent Sean Pendrell
With them, it was never something simple. It was a computer chip so fragile he could barely study it. It was a complex string of numbers and letters tracking a smallpox vaccination program for reasons he couldn’t even begin to fathom.
This was what he went to school for.
Unruhe (4x04) | Gerry Schnauz
Gerry knew she needed his help the moment they met. There was a howler inside of her head — a black mass invading her body and mind.
The Field Where I Died (4x05) | Melissa Rydell Ephesian
Melissa struggled with the idea of reincarnation, but dared not show it. And as it turned out, a broken link in the chain of her faith led to more broken links.
When she first saw Vernon hurt a child, the chain shattered.
Sanguinarium (4x06) | Dr. Theresa Shannon
The face on the computer had looked just like Jack, but that had to be impossible. The science of surgery hadn’t come that far. To spread the eyes further apart, change features completely… and besides, she knows him. Knows the person he is…
Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man (4x07) | Albert M. Godwinkle
All Albert M. Godwinkle wants today is to read a halfway decent manuscript that puts a smile on his disgruntled face. Today is not that day.
Tunguska (4x08) | Alex Krycek
If looks could kill, Alex would be a dead man. But he thrives off this, off making Mulder squirm. It’s just so fucking easy.
Terma (4x09) | Senator Albert Sorenson
He was a staunch proponent of holding insubordinate witnesses in contempt when the court was not being respected, and no one, not even a government employee, was immune to that.
Paper Hearts (4x10) | Addie Sparks
The little girl he loves is gone, and she is never coming back.
Just like me.
El Mundo Gira (4x11) | Migrant Worker
At the simple mention of El Chupacabra, the shack erupted in a cacophony of worry, as if merely saying the name might summon the beast.
Leonard Betts (4x12) | Michele Wilkes
Even through the panic she felt screaming through her that nothing about this was okay, she felt a moment of relief wash over her. Maybe it had all been a dream. Maybe her partner hadn’t died while she was at the wheel.
Never Again (4x13) | Ed Jerse
Deadbeat. Loser. Failure.
He’s heard it all, and he has had enough. No one humiliates Ed Jerse anymore. No, not now. Never again.
Memento Mori (4x14) | Kurt Crawford
What is destined for a creature borne of fluid and test tubes, guided by the hands of cruel men?
Kaddish (4x15) | Ariel Luria
Someone else’s hatred had taken her true love away. Just like that, in an instant, like it was nothing. But it was not hatred that led her to the gravesite that stormy night.
Unrequited (4x16) | Special Agent Kent Hill
Hill slides in his earpiece, watching as their eyes lock. His wife would call it eavesdropping, but as he steps closer, tilting his head just right to better hear their hushed voices, Hill simply calls it satisfying a long-standing curiosity.
Tempus Fugit (4x17) | Bartender
The man tried to fluff the pink ball back into shape after presumably squashing it in his pocket. “The woman I came in with— it’s her birthday, and she loves these things. I was wondering if there was any way you could ask someone in the back to put it on a plate and bring it out to her?”
Max (4x18) | Sharon Graffia
Sharon Graffia isn’t a liar. She’d only done what she needed to in order for people to believe her. All she’s ever wanted was someone to believe her.
Synchrony (4x19) | Jason Nichols
Naïveté and a complete lack of understanding of the consequences of their work had been their downfall. But how could they have known?
Small Potatoes (4x20) | Eddie Van Blundht
It didn’t take him long to realize he’d initially misread the situation when he saw them at the clinic. Based on the look Dana Scully shot him when he tried to hold her hand at the airport, he knew he was navigating territory Fox Mulder had yet to conquer.
Zero Sum (4x21) | Billy
He slowly twisted his neck to the right, and was horrified by the sight before him. In the next bed over was David from his class, his face covered in gross red bumps. He looked dead.
Billy didn’t know what else to do. He started crying.
Elegy (4x22) | Lauren Heller
She had an exam in the morning. Her mother’s birthday was the following weekend. She had plans.
Demons (4x23) | Amy Cassandra
As she speaks, the deep wound in her skull throbs, reminding her that that was true, until weeks ago when she’d traded the nightmare of one penetrating drill with the reality of another.
Gesthemane (4x24) | Father McCue
Her faith had come from God, yes… but it had also come from another, less expected source. Perhaps it still did.
Stay tuned for more perspectives coming in Season Four!
1 | 2 | 3 | 4
We spend so much time deliberating and chatting about who to use in a given episode or where certain characters would be best utilized in the series, and we'd love to hear any opinions or predictions you might have! Do you have a favorite minor character? What episodes do you think would be best for our favorite recurring characters? Your feedback is one of the most enjoyable parts of this project (and sometimes hearing other perspectives can help inform the decisions we have to make). - @admiralty-xfd, @fridaysat9, @monikafilefan, and @gaycrouton

"Preying on the Weak and Vainglorious"
(Fictober, Day 11)
Prompt from @welsharcher: bad luck (salt, shattered mirror, black cat.) Perfect fit for Sanguinarium, no?
*****
Salt circles, witchcraft, pounds of flesh…
A black cat.
Mulder watched it sidle to their rental, sniff the tires, and jump up under the carriage.
Bad luck hadn’t run out, it seemed.
Scully’s telltale heels clipped behind him, tapping out the rhythm of her concentration. Likely, she was perusing the last report they had needed before leaving town.
“Mulder.”
Coming to a premeditated halt beside him, she switched the paper between her fingers, nails scratching softly as they shuffled.
She waited.
He waited.
She sighed. “Her name was--”
“Patricia Matthews. 37 years old. Single. Asked for an abdominoplasty but called it a 'tummy tuck'." Mulder adjusted his crouch, flexing out the kinks. “The only crime she committed was being born on the wrong day.”
He could feel his partner's radar switch on, mind jumping from pattern to pattern in an attempt to pinpoint his mood.
“Any family?”
“Only an ex. He wasn’t very helpful, other than to serve as a beneficial reminder of the importance of restraining orders.”
Pivoting, Mulder cast around his own feelers. “What is it, Scully?”
Furrowed brows, pinched nose bridge, measured sigh-- the trifecta. “I can’t help but think…” She paused, crossed her arms, tried to leech calm from the horizon. “If there had been one person-- one-- who loved her, who believed she was beautiful inside and out….” The paper bobbed up and down for emphasis. “I read her words, Mulder. Patricia went into surgery not knowing the operation's name, what the procedure required, or even the potential long-term side effects."
Scully was working up to a point. He waited.
"Patricia was getting plastic surgery because she believed that it would make her feel… wanted. Desired. She mentioned to everyone in the hospital that no one had ever told her they loved her.”
The clouds shifted suddenly, the hot sun beat down mercilessly, and the air turned stifling. Mulder felt sweat starting to pool at his collar, heat begin to burn his face.
Scully's voice hardened as she continued. “It’s abhorrent that medicine was weaponized against her; and that Patricia Matthews died because she had become ashamed of her own reflection."
Ah, the knife’s edge between the supernatural and the all too natural. “I’ve been known to crack a few mirrors in my day.”
Mulder knew Scully was looking-- really looking-- at him. He evaded her insistence as long as possible, purposefully turning towards his pitiful stakeout.
Of course, he had no such luck.
Her eyes were tender, her expression firm. “Mulder, you’re beautiful.”
The cat plopped down suddenly, startling them both; and ran off, unconcerned, back to the asphalt jungle.
******
Thank you for reading~
Enjoy!

Saw this tweet and had to write a little something about it. ❤️
Reassurance
“Mulder, what are you doing?” Scully asks as she opens the door and walks into his hotel room, a slight smile on her face at finding him looking at himself in the mirror.
“Nothing.”
“Hmm. Didn’t look like nothing.” She crosses her arms and raises her eyebrows, her smile wider now.
He glances at himself again and sighs as he turns to her.
“Have you ever thought about changing your appearance? What you would change if you could?” he asks and she blinks at him, taking a deep breath. He shrugs as she lets it out.
“I wouldn’t mind being a little taller,” she says and he shakes his head.
“No, not that,” he says, glancing at the mirror again. “I mean… your appearance. Your face.”
“Are you suggesting I need to change my appearance?”
“What?! No!” he says, turning to look back at her. “I would never think that you did. I’m asking if you ever thought about it.” He shakes his head again and she smiles, uncrossing her arms.
“I don’t think anyone ever loves everything about their appearance, but no, I’ve never considered plastic surgery.”
“Hmm,” he says, nodding at her and looking at the mirror out of the corner of his eye.
“Why are you asking? Are you thinking about it?”
“No… not… well, I mean…” He touches the tip of his nose quickly and then moves his hand as he clears his throat. “It was just a question. Just a… never mind.”
“I like your nose,” she says and he stares at her, with a look of surprise in his eyes.
“I didn’t say anything about my nose.”
“You didn’t have to say it,” she says softly with a smile and she watches him draw in a breath.
“You don’t think it’s… too…” He shrugs as he gestures to it and she shakes her head.
“I think it’s exactly the nose you’re supposed to have, the one that was meant for you.” She smiles again, stepping closer to him. “You change that… and I think you lose a bit of you.”
“Yeah?” he asks, his voice quiet.
“Yeah,” she whispers, standing right in front of him, smiling as she licks her lips.
“It makes me look… pleasant?”
“I could think of a better description.”
“Like what?”
“Hmm,” she says, reaching out and squeezing two of his fingers. “Distinguished. Notable. Memorable.”
“Attractive?”
She stares at him, hearing the desire for truth despite the casual tone he had used. His eyes hold hers and she smiles as he opens his hand to clasp hers.
“Exceedingly,” she whispers and his eyes widen.
“Exceedingly?” he echoes in a whisper and she nods as she squeezes his hand. He swallows hard and she smiles. “Well, that’s good to know.”
“Happy to have assuaged your worries,” she says and he hums softly.
He lets go of her hand and suddenly pulls her to him, holding her close as he lets out a breath. She smiles again as she closes her eyes and puts her arms around his waist, breathing in his scent.
“Thank you,” he whispers and she hums with a nod as she takes a deep breath and begins to let him go. He smiles as she steps back and tucks her hair behind her ears.
“So, you wanted to show me something?” she says and he nods, pointing to the television.
“Yeah. A video,” he says.
He walks to the television and pushes the tape into the VCR. She stands beside him as he readies it and he clears his throat.
“I don’t think you need to be taller,” he says quietly and she holds her breath as she listens. “I think you’re the height you were meant to be.”
He brushes his arm against hers and she dips her head with a smile, thinking of how she fits in his arms.
Like puzzle pieces interlocking.
She nods as he brushes against her again and their attention turns to the video and back to the case at hand.

Sanguinarium is one of the best episodes. The dialogue, the plot, the special effects, the outfits, the directing… all of it is really well done and is, for me, a “classic X File” episode. It’s also very fun to see Mulder’s fastidiousness at his appearance in the way he checks himself out in the mirror and plays around with his nose.

Love it when their dialogue says ‘murder charges, investigative case, spooky stuff’ and the rest of the scene says ‘flirting! flirting! flirting!’ ft. Mulder totally not gazing while leaning back on his hotel bed & Scully standing over him

All Eyes Lead to the Truth | Sanguinarium (4x06)
Tumblr media
Theresa had always liked Jack. He’d been a great get for the practice. As hospital coordinator, it was her job to help fill the need for new doctors, new perspectives, and groundbreaking medicine to keep their funding healthy. Jack’s training, his resume, his recommendations— they had all been so favorable.
Dr. Jack Franklin was smart, charming, led the staff with his simple way of talking and his clear focus on what needed to be done. His patients had never complained and his work was impeccable. Never in her life had Theresa seen such perfectly placed sutures.
She’d been involved in his hiring. She’d fought to add him to their team when one of the board members had expressed some misgivings. She’d convinced her that what she’d noticed, the strong presence that filled the room when Jack was around, was just an abundance of confidence.
And that's what they wanted in their doctors.
Theresa feels a pain in her core as she thinks about the years since Jack’s arrival.
That confidence. One Christmas at their holiday party, after a few too many glasses of Cabernet, she’d found it almost intoxicating. The way he lounged in his seat with the air of a king on his throne, while doctors and hospital administrators clamored to talk to him.
Who knows what they spoke to him about, but Theresa had understood that night the desire to be in his presence.
That was the night they’d taken it too far— it was only a kiss in a dark corner of a dark hallway, but from then on, they both knew she would do anything for him. She hasn’t ever been sure how much that meant to him, but it matters to her.
Mattered.
Theresa clears her throat and runs her tongue across her lip.
FBI agents. At their hospital. Never would she have thought…
The face on the computer had looked just like Jack, but that had to be impossible. The science of surgery hadn’t come that far. To spread the eyes further apart, change features completely… and besides, she knows him. Knows the person he is…
At least, she did.
Even now, she can’t believe the theory the agents came up with. It’s impossible. How could a man do those things?
And a man she had trusted.
She takes a breath, pulling in as much air as she can manage. She’d thought it was the nurse who was to blame, or one of the junior doctors. Some sort of mass hysteria that had led her staff to an odd sort of madness.
But it was Jack? Jack, who had gotten into their heads. Jack, who had led good doctors with long careers laid out in front of them to kill unknowing patients who only wanted to be beautiful.
He’d left her there, to contemplate how wrong she’d been, what a terrible choice it was to have added him to their practice.
His eyes had been so cold, so unmoved by her, the colleague standing before him.
Her breathing is shallow, and her throat feels moist. There is a tang in the air and she remembers the eyebrow lift she’s scheduled to perform that afternoon. Dr. White would be able to step in for her if she wasn’t able, but she’d developed a rapport with Mrs. Klein. She would be disappointed at the change.
Theresa’s hand curls into a fist and she struggles to keep her thoughts straight. She hears footsteps outside the operating room door. Heels against the tile floor. The clicks are fast, like the person is running.
She tastes iron and can’t figure out why. She had felt fine that morning, completely fine as she walked from her office to find Jack.
It had been a day like any other when she found him standing in an unused operating room, scalpels held in his curled fist.
But then they were gone.
He must have put them down, though she didn’t see it. She tried to remember what had happened next— something about cleaning the instruments, she thinks— but she can’t be too sure.
She wonders the last time she’d eaten as pain spreads through her stomach. Nothing makes sense as she feels the door behind her nudge against her back. Someone calls out.
“Mulder!”
She doesn’t remember how she’d ended up on the floor. She wonders where Jack had gone and who the people are who are speaking around her.
They’re yelling, calling for a stretcher.
She suddenly realizes that something is wrong and her heart starts to race. People move around her and she strains, listening for Jack.
She would do anything for him. He would know what had happened.
He is a good doctor.
They are lucky to have him.
