Nigeria 🇳🇬 Senate Rejects War Request From President Tinubu
President Tinubu of Nigeria 🇳🇬 will not be leading troops into battle against Niger 🇳🇪 on Sunday after issuing his national neighbors an ultimatum.
Following the refusal of the coup leaders to backtrack, West African defence chiefs said they had drawn a plan for military action as part of which President Tinubu wrote the Senate for permission to involve Nigerian troops in the action.
However, at an executive session on Saturday, the senators rejected the request by the president.
According to a senator who attended the meeting, senators agreed to pass a resolution condemning the coup and to commend ECOWAS leaders on their efforts to restore constitutional order in Niger, but they ruled out military options.
Basically what will probably happen next is that Nigeria 🇳🇬 will increase sanctions while Niger 🇳🇪 will become more unstable as the nation battles terrorists with limited funds & limited electricity.
Residents living in the cities of Niamey, Maradi and Zinder have power for about an hour at a time before it is switched off for up to five hours.
Power cuts like these are unusual in Niger, which normally has regular and reliable supplies.
But the country is heavily dependent on its wealthier neighbour to the south, Nigeria, as its main supplier of electricity. In 2019, Nigelec's chief executive told the Ideas For Development outlet that Niger relied on Abuja for up to 70% of its electricity supply.
What will probably happen is the situation in Niger 🇳🇪, along with Burkina Faso 🇧🇫 & Mali 🇲🇱 will continue to deteriorate, & over the next few years will will witness millions of refugees from these nations attempt to enter neighboring countries.
With the threat of military intervention unofficially off the table, we could witness more African nations that were previously oppressed by France 🇫🇷 reject democracy in favor of an autocratic military government (which does not bode well for civil liberties).

Tumblr media
The Senate is currently in a rowdy session after a senator raised an order that Senator Olamilekan Adeola has presented the budget padding issue and needs no back and forth on it. Senator Abdul Ningi had earlier alleged that N3.7 trillion was padded into the 2024 budget. Ningi is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Population and represents PDP, Bauchi Central.
