I’m gonna mention. I feel like the Travelers are p Romani coded. there are lies spread abt them abt infantacide (or in the case of Romani ppl, kidnapping), the slur used in place of their actual name, and their beliefs. So far it hasn’t been too offensive, which is a breath of fresh air, since SO MANY stories that take inspiration from Romani ppl do it the most horrible way possible. Some seem like they went down an itemized list of harmful stereotypes and tropes. I just want to let you know that even if this wasn’t intentional, it seems really baked in there, and if you’re worried abt anything, getting a Romani sensitivity reader could help! There’s also lots of literature written by Romani ppl detailing their history of oppression, and how it’s been used in pop culture (What We Do In the Shadows, for example, was an incredible anti-romani show)

That said, thank you for the kind representation. I really like Storm, and her being a butch gnc maned lioness just kind of rocketed her to the top of the fav list lol.

Ahh thank you so much, it's so good to hear these kinds of asks where we're doing OK with this kind of cultural representation because it's obviously something we're quite passionate about showcasing. Without buying into stereotypes, of course. The whole Traveller culture actually draws inspiration from Irish travellers, as they are also subject to the same discrimination you're talking about, especially in the UK. I mean, that's not shocking considering they're Irish or of Irish descent.

They are stereotyped as being thieves and basically leeches of society over here, except their "thieving" is actually them going around and asking for any items that are broken and useless so that they may take them and either repair them or use their parts to fix something else entirely. Extremely useful if you need something getting rid of for free and it's just something that's always been a thing for as long as I can remember.

They'll also contribute other things to the community such as tuck shops (basically selling candy from a moving truck) and handymen services. Like I say, they've just always been a presence around me and I went to school with some of their kids.

They're basically just about getting resources from honest labour and reusing materials and they get hated on for it, purely because it's "different" and "weird" and it's truly not right. Especially when we as individuals outside of their culture take advantage of these services anyway.

There's plenty of media over here written by Irish travellers detailing their childhoods growing up so I'm also drawing inspiration from those sources.

But yeah, Irish travellers are subject to similar discrimination as Romani so completely understandable why you're getting those vibes. c: - RJ

The meaning behind your URL: When I got into early 2000 British Indie music everyone in a - not yet famous but oh so close to making it!! - band had a real first name and a last name consisting of part of their band name (Zac Needs of Special Needs for example) and everyone who was band adjacent went by a first name and a (often, but not always, alliterative) made up last name (Dave Danger, Zosha Bangles, Sophie Thunder, Laura Love, and so on…) hence Michelle Misfit. Which also fit into all the art I was doing at the time (for pay and not) and the dreams of opening a little shop in Camden on day, all of which came under Misfit Design. So the name is 20+ years old, but also Bradley James knows that that’s my username and has said it live on air (with no prompting what so ever!!) so I can never ever change it now! Hahaha

A 14-year-old suspected gunman was arrested after two people were killed and at least four wounded during a shooting spree at a luxury shopping centre in the heart of Bangkok.

Hundreds of people fled the busy downtown mall into torrential rain and chaos after gunshots were heard, while videos shared on social media showed others taking cover in shops, restaurants and bathrooms as the shooter stalked the building.

Within an hour, the Metropolitan Investigation Bureau of the Royal Thai Police took a 14-year-old boy wearing a black T-shirt, thick-rimmed glasses and a cap adorned with the American flag into custody.

Photos released by the emergency services showed one officer collecting the handgun used, and another pinning down and handcuffing the teenager.

Torsak Sukvimol, Thailand’s police chief, said the boy went to school close to the Siam Paragon shopping centre. He had previously been receiving treatment for a mental health condition, but had recently stopped taking his medication. His motives remain unclear.

No British nationals involved

Mr Sukvimol added that the two people killed during the attack were Chinese and Burmese nationals. Four other people were injured, and several are in a critical condition.

The UK’s Foreign Office said it is not aware of any British nationals being involved.

“I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family of the deceased following the shooting inside Siam Paragon,” said Srettha Thavisin, Thailand’s prime minister. “I would like to give my moral support to the families of all who died and were injured.”

The day’s events have shaken the Thai capital. Upmarket Siam Paragon is one of Bangkok’s biggest and most popular shopping centres, drawing tourists and locals alike.

“We didn’t know what was happening, then staff from a shop asked us to go inside and said there was a shooter,” Xiong Ying, a 41-year-old Chinese tourist, told AFP. “Everyone was trying to find a place to hide. So many people were terrified, just like a scene in the zombie movies.”

“Everybody was screaming and running,” Gautam Vora, 45, an Indian national who works in finance in Bangkok, told AP. “There was a lot of chaos and that was almost like a stampede.”

“I don’t think [staff] were well prepared for this,” he added. “I think most of the staff inside the shopping mall were confused and they were running helter-skelter, too.”

Following the shooting, authorities temporarily closed the nearby Siam skytrain station, preventing commuters from leaving the stop during the rush hour.

Gun violence is not unusual in Thailand, where there are high rates of firearm ownership, although mass shootings are relatively rare.

But the latest killing comes as the country marks one year since one of its deadliest mass attacks. Last October, a former police officer killed 36 people, including 24 young children, in an hour-long rampage at a nursery in northern Thailand that devastated the kingdom.

It came after a former army officer went on a rampage in a shopping mall in the city Nakhon Ratchasima, murdering 29 people and injuring dozens more.

Blog post 03-02-2023 - Sickness

When you decide to run a small business, the freedom it gives you to run your own schedule is always a huge draw when compared to being an employee of someone else’s business, however whilst things look great all the perks of self employment and flexible schedules can mean for a while you are looking through rose tinted glasses, but with all planning for fun and good things, you also need to plan for the bad and boring.

When I first quit my corporate job to go self employed full time, I had to look at my outgoing expenses each month, with the first being my pension. I had to reduce my monthly payment, but over time I've increased this gradually. This is something I was able to plan for and incorporate into each year’s projections. I also decided to pull off 20% of each week's earnings and just store them in an instant access savings account. It barely makes any interest, but my initial idea for this was to be a pot of instant money should I have any large expenses.

What this actually meant is I had a backup for when I was too sick to work.

If the last three years has taught us anything, it's that a bad virus or illness can appear out of nowhere and throw everything on its head with regards to running a business. You can’t predict when you will be ill, and it can always come at the most inconvenient time. Unfortunately that’s what happened to me this week.

We’re now at the first few days of February, but since the start of January I had been feeling run down and had a slight tickle of a cough. As January is always a quiet month I have been able to reduce my working hours in order to get some rest and hopefully let my body restore itself. However, after a very busy two days last weekend, this Monday that cough rapidly deteriorated. I had a dry cough that would empty my lungs at any given point, every single bone and joint in my body ached beyond belief, migraine, nausea, elevated temperature, photosensitivity to light and also noise. I had definitely developed something far more severe than just a simple tickly cough. After testing for Covid and that thankfully coming up negative, a call to the NHS 111 service determined it was likely to be the RSV virus, something that has been prevalent in our area for the last few weeks.

I had little choice but to take the week ‘off’. I’m thankful my husband was able to arrange to work from home and thus take our son to and from school, and for the better part of the week I've been able to do little more than sip water whilst wrapped in a blanket and binge watch Criminal Minds on Disney+. What hasn’t helped my recovery is the lack of medicated cold & flu medications that pharmacies locally haven’t been able to source, but that lack of supply is more down to Brexit. But this isn’t a Brexit blog post so we’ll touch on that in the future.

With having a week off, I had to decide whether or not to shut the shops or not. In the end I decided to keep them on, and just allow the natural flow of orders to come in. I completely ignored social media this week, the admin has piled up, no new listing or manufacturing. Instead I packed what orders did come in then left them for 24 hours after sanitising them. If 2020 taught us anything, it's how to protect others and stop the spread of any viruses. After 24 hours and full sanitisation, my husband took the parcels to their drop off points meaning i didn’t have to leave the house.

Through all this I was thankful that I had that small reserve in savings. I could take my time this week to just get better without having the added pressure and worry that I still had to bring in a full week’s wage. My pension payment was able to be covered and this week’s bills have been paid.

Here in the UK if you are employed by a company, most of the time they will offer a certain amount of sick days where you get paid full pay, or a high percentage of full pay (in the past it’s usually been 12 days at companies i’ve worked for). After that the company can draw from the government what’s called SSP - statutory sick pay - which is just under £100 per week, payable for up to 28 weeks. It is only applicable if you are employed by a company. You cannot claim this if you are self employed.

I’m sorry if this week’s blog post is a little disjointed, i’m still in a bit of a fog of flu meds and lack of sleep, but hopefully next weeks post will be something a little more upbeat and fluffy!
