2024.02  ~ Top 6 longest fics posted on AO3
1. The Stag and the Dragon: The School of Witchcraft and Wizardry by Jesse_James [T, 180k]
►On the night of October 31st 1980, in an attempt to subvert prophecy, The Dark Lord Voldemort launches a pair of attacks to rid him of the one chosen to defeat him. But when one fails, the world is changed forever. But in this universe, things are different. The rules are not always the same. And things will not always be as we remember. And with a different choice made with a young orphaned Harry's future, the consequences of this one act will echo across fate. /// Meanwhile, in a different family, another boy struggles against what he is, and what he was born to be. All while his father seems to orchestrate more than just his life.
2. Empty Spaces by nori_mari [T, 125k]
►What do you do when everything you know comes to an end? The battle is over, Voldemort's gone, everything they ever wanted has come to pass. So why is it so hard to return to a “normal” life? How does one simply pick up the pieces and move on? When your entire life and identity have revolved around this one thing for so long… what do you do you have left of yourself when that one thing is over?
3. Papa Needs Daddy's Help by @amillionregrets [E, 94k]
►Harry's life revolves entirely around work these days, and he's deeply engrossed in it, as usual, when an urgent fire-call from Ron abruptly turns his world upside down. Apparently, a four-year-old girl with emerald eyes and long black hair has shown up at Ron's shop, claiming to be Harry's daughter and seeking his help to save her papa.
4. The Boy from the Piano Shop by @soliblomst [M, 90k]  *typo
►After going blind in a reckless attempt to avenge Ginny's death, Harry battles with severe depression. One day, he stumbles upon a quaint piano restoration shop in the heart of London and meets the owner, a kindly old man, and his introverted young apprentice, whose voice sounds strangely familiar. As Harry and Draco slowly reconnect through private piano lessons, the small workshop becomes Harry's refuge, offering him a glimmer of hope in a world without eyes.
5. An Addendum For Depressed Authors by @queenie-jinny [E, 86k]
►‘The Misadventures of Harrison Portier’ six-part book series by J.E.P has been on the Daily Prophet’s best sellers list for 177 weeks straight, despite the author’s insistent anonymity and continuing avoidance of the public eye. After a long hiatus, the elusive final novel in the septology is about to hit the shelves, and Draco Malfoy, avid reader of the series and self-proclaimed number one fan (a proclamation he’d made to absolutely none save for himself), is determined to be the first person to read it. When the epilogue of the book leaves much to be desired, Draco has no choice but to take matters into his own hands. Thus begins a stormy correspondence that threatens to disrupt Harry’s hard-earned peaceful routine and maybe change his life in the process.
6. Draco's Splendid Decisions by @jocundasykes [E, 69k]
►Stuck in the doldrums of a rubbish summer holiday, an unexpected invitation beckons you back to the halls of Hogwarts for an eighth year. Should you go, and endure another round of academia? Dive into the mundane drudgery of work? Or escape it all with an international getaway? /// You're a free man. What happens next is up to you.

“This contradiction arises out of the particular way in which capitalism goes about transforming the natural world through collective labour. Any society ‘extracts its natural-material use values’ from nature, but ‘in a capitalist commodity economy this realm of second nature takes on an alienated form, dominated by exchange value rather than use value, leading to a rift in the universal metabolism’ (p.50). This leads to a ‘rupture by capitalist production of the “eternal natural conditions”, constituting the “robbery” of the earth itself’ (p.58).”

August review!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Started the month visiting family back in Michigan. Got to hang out a lot with my brother and his girlfriend and spend time with my parents. Also got in some solid relaxing time, especially on my parents hammock.
Celebrated lots of birthdays including my friends 1920s themed party, a four square drink in hand park day and of course my ponys birthday festive trail ride.
Also played in a frisbee tournament where we painted our nails green for green chiles (the team name)
And had an absurd two day work trip to dc to work a single overnight shift.
I didn’t make much progress on most of my goals but I did finish four books! Goal for the year is 30 ( most of those were most of the way finished). I also most felt with my phone data management/ moving all of my pictures to a new google account. And I did get another layout d at the frisbee tournament. I’m realizing tho that I am not actually going to finish all of my goals and that’s okay. I never planted pumpkins and now it’s too late, I wanted to go on three camping trips and have done one and soon it will be cold out. But I’ve gotten a lot of them done!
Overall it was a successful month. I feel like I’ve just been going warp speed this summer so hoping I’ll finally catch my breath in October. September will be full of work and other craziness

weekly reading list
things i've read this week i found interesting.
In Syria, the West’s Humanitarian Claims Crumble to Dust by Jonathan Cook: as the death toll from the earthquakes hitting Syria and Turkey exceeds 46 thousand lives, don't forget that the people of Syria have been living under the collective punishment by western powers choking them with sanctions. humans can't control forced of nature but the amount of damage and human sufferings is entirely political (as it appears in Turkey infrastructure was compromised by corruption)
The Foundation of Monte Albán, Intensification, and Growth: Coactive Processes and Joint Production: authors Linda Nicholas & Gary Feinman propose their hypothesis about egalitarian, collective "good" governance in Oaxaca valley settlements.
Surveillance Capitalism by John Bellamy Foster & Robert W. McChesney: outlines the history of cooperation between USA government and private companies to present issues of surveillance capitalism.
Of Flying Cars and the Declining Rate of Profit by David Graeber about creativity, innovation and imagination.
The Case for Free-Range Lab Mice by Sonia Shah: a long-overdue discussion about the limited benefit of using lab animals in biological & medical research. the questions about this practice are not only ethical, but practical.
The Evolution of Meaning – from Pragmatic Couplings to Semantic Representations: author Kevin Mitchell writes about the distinction between deriving pragmatic and semantic meanings, and proposes evolutionary theory about their development.
Three Ideas from Linguistics that Everyone in AI Should Know by Gary Marcus and Elliot Murphy: large language models don't in fact, use language, at least not as humans use it. they merely spit out words & phrases that are statistically likely to be next; the author of this article focuses on 3 key elements of language that are absent from LLMs: reference, cognitive models and compositionality.
Africa's Forgotten Colony in the Sahara by Paweł Wargan: from European imperialism, to Moroccan nationalist interests and the greed of multinational mining corporations, this articles introduces a bit of the modern history of Western Sahara and the plight of the Sahrawi people.
The Carbon Triangle: analysis by Jeremy Wallace who identifies interactions between three major economic actors in contemporary China: finance, land and real estate, and how they impact the environment.
interview with Clara E. Mattei, the author of The Capital Order: How Economists Invented Austerity and Paved the Way to Fascism
Inside Google’s Quest to Digitize Troops’ Tissue Samples: James Bandler answers the question: what's more creepy than the US' DOD's largest collection of human tissues going back over a century? reply: Google wants to make money off it.
Lever News covering the catastrophe that is US rail, in the name of profiteering, from Rail Companies Blocking Safety Rules, Biden DOJ Backing Norfolk Southern’s Bid To Block Lawsuits, all this after they screwed overworked rail workers for daring demanding more than one (1!!) single day of paid sick leave per year, amid rail companies high profits and terrible working conditions.

"Finally, the human capacity to perform work, which Marx called “labor power,” must not be confused with the power of any nonhuman agency, whether natural or man made. Human labor, whether directly exercised or stored in such products as tools, machinery, or domesticated animals, represents the sole resource of humanity in confronting nature. Thus for humans in society, labor power is a special category, separate and inexchangeable with any other, simply because it is human. Only one who is the master of the labor of others will confuse labor power with any other agency for performing a task, because to him, steam, horse, water, or human muscle which turns his mill are viewed as equivalents, as “factors of production.” For individuals who allocate their own labor (or a community which does the same), the difference between using labor power as against any other power is a difference upon which the entire “economy” turns. And from the point of view of the species as a whole, this difference is also crucial, since every individual is the proprietor of a portion of the total labor power of the community, the society, and the species."

May 2023 Wrap-Up Post
A PSA before I start the post, KINSHIP AND KINDNESS is on sale for 99c at most retailers and in most countries until 6/11. Grab your $0.99 ebook copy or you can also pick up the audiobook or paperback here. This has been a pretty good month for writing, but because it has been the end of the semester as well, my brain felt like mush for quite a bit of it. Fighting off burnout has been a large…

2023.08 ~ Top 10 longest fics posted on AO3
1. Good Intentions by Gloworm13 [E, 382k]
►Harry never expected a conversation over returning Draco's wand. [...] Harry can't cope, especially when his group of peers is sent back to Hogwarts to finish their interrupted Seventh Year. And Draco Malfoy is wholly unprepared for facing the love of his life every fucking day now that he knows.
2. About Everything We Fucked Up and Tried to Fix by @zoooooey0610 [E, 246k]
►The time is the Dark Middle Ages, even with Voldemort defeated, the Wizarding world is still a place where Omegas are seen as properties. Couldn’t sleep, Harry came across ‘The Slytherin Wall of Sluts’ that changed the rest of his life, but the cog wheel of destiny may have started to move long before that. Twelve years later, he was confronted with the presents of destiny, and struggled to deal with the mess. However, every step he took seemed to be another mistake.
3. Cut From the Sky by @mallstars [E, 150k]
►"I'm stuck in a time loop, reliving November 2nd. This is the 111th time I've lived through today." Draco stilled. His moody eyes, the tension in his hands where he gripped onto his umbrella, the careful mask of blankness flickering over his face — everything about him was so difficult and so very dear to Harry. "Ah," said Draco, "and?"
4. After the Rain Falls by @shinigami714 [E, 95k]
►After the events of the war, all Harry wants to do is forget. For everything to return to normal. But things never were normal for him, and the war left many marks on him not so easily forgotten. When he receives a surprising offer to return to Hogwarts in a continuing education program, Harry jumps at the chance, and despite his best efforts to deal with his problems alone, discovers along the way that quite often, two minds are greater than one.
5. guard dog by chrismare [?, 63k]
►The first thing Draco ever loved was the Manor. Not the house- it was too big, too quiet, too cold- but the grounds that surrounded it. He grew up on stinging soles, running barefoot through his own little world. One of the house elves had cleaned the tiny cuts on his feet once and told him that he'd get used to it, that he'd grow calluses and it would stop hurting. It never really did.
6. Dating Draco Malfoy by @queenofthyme [M, 60k]
►Draco Malfoy is dating his way through Harry Potter’s endless pool of ex-boyfriends. With the help of Harry’s expert dating advice, he just might find exactly who he’s looking for...
7. Snogging Lessons by Revolocard [T, 58k]
►Harry Potter thought the hardest part about being the Chosen One would be preparing to fight Voldemort. He didn't expect it might actually be missing out on all the normal teenaged stuff. Now in sixth year, Harry feels like an outsider, too worried about being the subject of another Witch Weekly article to try to take part. When he and Draco Malfoy land in a semester's worth of detention, Draco is delighted and horrified to discover the Boy Who Lived is not only a virgin, he doesn't even know how to snog. Secret snogging lessons. It's not like it's anything more than just catching Harry up a bit. What could go wrong?
8. That Marriage Contract by Umeko [E, 54k]
►What happens when the forced marriage and male pregnancy trope combine to spring a surprise on the Boy Who Lived and his arch-rival turned unwitting fiancé? And they all have two dearly departed grandfathers to thank for the mess.
9. Terrible People by @wolfpants [E, 52k] --- ART by @getawayfox
►What happens when Harry and Draco end up on the same Muggle gay cruise? They certainly didn't plan for it to happen (but their friends might have). They're stuck with each other for a week, they might as well make the most of it, right? Featuring a holiday-long game of Truth or Dare, a very ill-judged FWB proposition, decades-long pining, lots of gin, and a small pair of green swimming trunks.
10. and i ignite by @pixiedunhoff [M, 51k]
►Draco Malfoy loves attention - and the Muggle world has given it to him in spades. Through a surprising and humbling series of events, Draco has achieved tremendous success in the music industry. He has recouped his fortune, earned legions of adoring fans, and gets loads of attention. Over the years, it has still never been quite enough… Until the subject of his more sizzling songs abruptly barges back into his life, demanding answers.

Monthly Wrap-up | March 2024
Hello everyone! Welcome to the third monthly wrap-up of this year. Oh, I really hope to continue writing these monthly wrap-up posts for a long-long time. Back then when I first stepped into this series, I was just following other bloggers who did it, I thought it was cool, but now when I think about it, it’s more than just content.  It feels like I’m documenting my days and when I realized this…

Industrial Agriculture: Lessons from North Korea
Zhun Xu in Monthly Review
The author of "From Commune to Capitalism", Zhun Xu is well placed to make an analysis of agricultural issues in DPRK. Xu points out the significant contradictions between the juche principle of self-reliance, and the historical development of industrial agriculture in DPRK based on massive import of mineral oils. The crisis of the 90s was not due to faults of socialism per se, but the inability to sustain industrial farming in light of the inability of DPRK to pay market prices for oil and fertilizers, after the marketization of China and the former Soviet Union. Per hectare fertilizer usage in DPRK prior to the 90s was more than double that used in the USA, higher than China, but a little under that of the ROK and Japan.
Prior to the 90s, socialist trading partners were willing to accept a small trade deficit with DPRK, whose exports typically lagged behind its imports (despite the emphasis on juche). As DPRK began trade with the West in the 1970s, it quickly accrued a significant foreign debt for imports that maintained the basic domestic economy (rather than one-time capital expenses).
This, combined with increasing sanctions in the 90s, played a major role in the collapse of food production in the mid-90s (like a 50% decrease in cereal production).
An interesting point raised by Xu is this crisis was due to having achieved a high level of industrialization prior to the 90s, and thus it was unable to rely on a reserve army of labour in the countryside to gradually alter the economy. Another point of interest is that today DPRK produces nearly as much cereal as ROK, with about 6% of the fertilizer intensity.
The overall message is that of historical identification of socialism with industrial agriculture. A lesson from DPRK, and to a lesser extend Cuba, is that such agriculture is not sustainable in the long term, and can serve to undermine socialism in the long term.
"...ecological agriculture would be impossible without socialism. If a society plans to phase out fossil fuels and intense chemical applications, it implies we have to keep a considerable level of human physical labor in farming and other activities and a robust and populous countryside. This is against the overall trend in the history of capitalism. The people must develop the effective economic means of bringing an end to both the division of material and mental labor and the separation of town and country. This, of course, is just another way of describing socialism.
From the Maoist perspective, Zhun Xu's emphasis on all-round development and opposition to import-substitution make a lot of sense. Given that a major goal for global south communists includes national industrialization, the risks of overdependence on industrial methods and capitalist models of development should be kept in mind.

January 2023 Recap
I had been feeling pretty good about this month until near the end, then it all kinda turned disappointing.
Began taking 50mg Losartan to reduce my BP. It seems to be working. I go back to PCP next week and see what they say.
Got COVID for the first time since COVID started. It wasn't a bad case, pretty much like a yucky cold. Lots of sniffling, sore throat, tiredness. I didn't take anything for it other than Advil for the headache. Was pretty much over it in a week, though the tiredness persisted, and sometimes I still cough.
Kept up my workout streak, up to 42 days straight, though some of them during COVID were just very light stretching and yoga, but still I took the time and did something, even though I just wanted to sleep.
Switched up doing Plyojam 7 days a week and began walking 4 days/Plyojam 3 days, trying to see how my toe handled it. Turns out, not so good. Though it continued to heal when I walked on the beach for short walks, longer walks on hard surfaces has made the sore reappear and it has started hurting again. I thought I was making nice progress with the walking, at first my hips JUST KILLED ME, but as I did more, everything started feeling better. But I need this toe to heal, so I guess I'm gonna have to back off.
While my weight dropped nicely during the first half of the month, the last 10 days of January it has just bounced around in the same 2 pound range. What changed? (a) I cut Plyojam to 3 days vs 7 and started walking for 4 days. (b) during COVID I CRAVED oranges so much, so I bought some... and some more, and some more. I've been eating 1-2 navel oranges or tangerines a day up until yesterday. Each one is around 10-12g of sugar/carbs. That might've taken me out of ketosis (I need to get some pee sticks to measure ketones).
I *REALLY* wanted to hit that 25% to goal line this month, but, it never got there. I got to 24% a few times, but ended up at 23%.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To do in February:
Cut out the oranges
Get something to measure ketosis
Go back to 7x a week Plyojam
Do just short walks on the beach? Just enough to keep your hips loose until you can get your toe healed.
Try riding your bike instead of walking but IN ADDITION to Plyojam, not instead of.
Remember this is about HEALTH not just weight. Keep your blood sugar in check!
Don't give up.
