Behind the Scenes: Photographing Marble Busts
As part of the Photography Team here at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Ali and I often assist the photographers in request photography. This request was to shoot a series of photographs of five marble busts.
Due to the weight of the busts we worked collaboratively with the Art Handling Team, using a trolley jack and sliders, to manoeuvre the piece into the correct angles we needed to shoot from. The flashes were deliberately set up at different heights and distances to cast light and shadow onto the features of the busts, giving their faces character and personality otherwise lost in an equally lit photograph.
The bust depicted above is David Scott, 1806-1849. Artist (1831) by Sir John Steell. (PGL 1880)
We really enjoyed the challenges this shoot gave us and the opportunity to work with 3D sculpture rather than the flat prints we digitise day-to-day.

Lydia’s Final Blog Post!
Trainee six, Lydia Woolley, has written about her experience working with Orleans House Gallery, Garrick’s Temple and Strawberry Hill House, in a 6 month traineeship. We are sad to see her go, but incredibly proud of all her amazing work - take a look at what she got up to!
Tumblr media
With the end of the traineeship in sight it was a very busy last few weeks as I wanted to squeeze as much in as I could. I had a fantastic last few weeks full of a whole mix of different experiences.
At Orleans House Gallery I was researching and creating the next round of ‘My Richmond’ courses – this was a great opportunity. As it was based at Garrick’s Temple I planned a four week course inspired by the history of theatre and the local area. Researching these histories and interpreting them in engaging and exciting ways was one of the best experiences of my traineeship (and it was run in the incredible riverside setting – another perk!).  It was also really great to be able to help Kate Kennedy with the Picture Play exhibition where I was supported to write the exhibition interpretation panels. I was also very proud to see the work of the Art Club I had been leading that term displayed. I even made an appearance as Queen Caroline (in full costume and character!) at the exhibition opening – adding even further to the diverse experiences I was gaining.
Throughout my 6 month Traineeship I have been based at Orleans House Gallery for 3 days a week in their Education department. For the first 3 months my other two days per week were spent at Arts and Crafts Hammersmith, and for the final 3 months I moved to Strawberry Hill House for these two days a week. Again, being at Strawberry Hill House was a wonderful and varied experience.  Firstly I really loved the opportunity to be in such a unique Gothic Castle – I definitely fell under the Strawberry Hill spell, with its intriguing architecture and fascinating history – it’s a place like no other.  I worked with Nick, the Director of Strawberry Hill House and Michael, the Honorary Curator to work on a collections project, looking at many of the objects in the museum and store and working on organising the loans.  I also worked with the learning and outreach teams to run school sessions, and once again found myself (happily) in full costume.  I had the exciting opportunity to continue some of my work with Strawberry Hill. I am relooking at the schools offer and training freelancers to run school sessions, and helping to programme an exciting new public programmes and Museums at Nights offer.
Tumblr media
I feel very lucky to have had such a brilliant six months; I’ve got the chance to work with some fantastic people, on a broad range of projects and improve my skills massively. My aim in doing the traineeship was to put myself in the best possible position to further my career in heritage, interpretation and participation and I feel this was definitely achieved.  I’d really like to thank all the teams from my three placements for all being so welcoming and supportive (and continuing to be so), and to Skills For the Future Coordinator, Heather, for being a fantastic mentor throughout the six months. Also thank you to the Heritage Lottery Fund for funding this opportunity, it has proved to be an invaluable and hugely rewarding experience.
Following her traineeship Lydia moved straight on to Dulwich Picture Gallery and is now their Community Programmes Coordinator. Congratulations Lydia!
