Ruins of bustling Roman town discovered in UK
Tumblr media
Archaeologists have uncovered the exceptionally well-preserved remains of an Iron Age village that grew into a bustling ancient Roman trading town — an archaeological gem with more than 300 Roman coins, glass vessels and water wells — in what is now the district of South Northamptonshire, England in the United Kingdom.
The ancient hotspot — known as Blackgrounds for its black soil — has an abundance of ancient artifacts and structures spanning different time periods, including depictions of deities and Roman game pieces, according to about 80 archaeologists from the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) Headland Infrastructure, who spent the past year excavating the site ahead of the construction of HS2, a new high speed railway. On September 25th 1586 Mary Queen of Scots was moved to her final “prison” at Fotheringhay Castle.
Mary had fled to England after suffering a defeat at The Battle of Langside in  May 1568,  I shall now put together the journey to her ultimate end at Fotheringhay almost 20 years later, and the main properties where she was held.
Following the crushing defeat at Langside, Mary, in a move which hindsight shows was disastrous, slipped across the English border and into permanent imprisonment. Initially, she was treated as an honoured guest, at Workington Hall, then at Carlisle Castle. She was soon “persuaded”  to move to Bolton Castle.  some 75 miles further south, which would have made impossible any quick return to Scotland whilst the English government was considering its options.
Bolton was considered dangerously far from London, in an area of England that was still predominantly Catholic. Mary was moved further south, into the care of George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury, who would basically be her gaoler for about 15 years.
The main locations where Mary was housed were Tutbury, Sheffield  and Wingfield. Other properties housed her during he journey, but some were only overnight.
Of all the places she lived, Mary hated Tutbury the most. It was an aging castle, some miles north of Burton-on-Trent, and Mary arrived on 9th February 1569 to find it damp and cold. Furnishings had been hastily sent from Sheffield, but could not hide the stench from the latrines underneath Mary’s chamber windows.  The castle was (and is) part of the holdings of the Duchy of Lancaster, thus the personal property of Queen Elizabeth, but there is no record of Elizabeth ever visiting it. Despite the many films on the topic, Mary and Elizabeth never met.
In so far as Mary could prefer any location, Sheffield Castle was more appealing than Tutbury.  The main castle had been improved by Shrewsbury’s grandfather, the 6th Earl, and there was also an up-to-date manor house in the park. Mary spent time at both. Another of Shrewsbury’s properties where Mary was occasionally housed, was Wingfield Manor.  Today, an impressive ruin in the care of English Heritage, in 1580s it was probably the most attractive of her prisons. Located about half-way between Sheffield to the north, and Tutbury to the south, it is in the lovely countryside around Matlock, now in what we know as The Peak District
In 1584, Shrewsbury was finally released from his duties as Mary’s gaoler.  The task was given first to Sir Ralph Sadler, and then to Sir Amyas Paulet. The main location for her captivity in these last years of her life was Chartley, in Staffordshire, owned by Sir Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex. The mediaeval castle being uninhabitable, Mary  was lodged in Chartley Manor. The property was completely destroyed by fire in the eighteenth century.
It was from Chartley that Mary departed on her final journey to Fotheringhay Castle the great Northamptonshire stronghold of her Yorkist ancestors. The castle was set in a marshy landscape, where access was difficult, especially during the winter months, it was felt by the authorities that the unfortunate Scottish queen would be more secure at Fotheringhay, and the location would discourage any rash attempt to free her by force.
Mary was tried at the castle on 14th-15th October 1587 in a show trial and predictably found guilty on 25th October, the verdict was already certain before the evidence was even heard.
On February 8th 1588 Mary Queen of Scots was executed in the Great Hall. in  Fotheringhay Castle.

a lil history lesson for @highnessaisling ( and @ anyone else who wants 2 know a bit more abt britain dkjgfkfgj ). a pre-warning, this got long so i’m v sorry! fellow brits pls @ me if i got anything wrong bc i studied this years ago and it’s highly possible i forgot smth!
ok so i just wanted to say that britain is actually the worst when it comes to this bc counties here are reorganised and created as areas have been abolished or whatever reason ( it’s rly confusing, i’m not abt to get into that dfkjfgkjngf ) but essentially, most british counties named after some sort of city or river that’s in them ( i.e. york is in yorkshire, lancaster is in lancashire ) and there are 48 counties, most of which have been around since anglo-saxon times, and a lot of them are the shires ( which if ur not from britain will probs confuse u a lot fjgnfkkgfj ). they were initially created for legal reason, taxes and military organisation, but then were used for local government reasons and elections. they can be split into four categories by name!
shires
in simple terms, shire comes from anglo-saxon times and is french for the word “county”, which is why most of the counties ( 19 of them to specific ) have the word “shire” as a suffix, which is just tagged onto the name of what the county is named after. if u want a list, the shires are bedfordshire, buckinghamshire, cambridgeshire, cheshire, derbyshire, gloucestershire, hampshire, herefordshire, hertfordshire, lancashire, leicestershire, lincolnshire, northamptonshire, nottinghamshire, oxfordshire, shropshire, staffordshire, warwickshire, worcestershire, and yorkshire ( east, west and north ridings, south ) ( that’s a lot of shires skdfgndsfg )
former kingdoms
so these ones don’t end in shire which is probably where it’s gonna get confusing, which relate to the tribes that settled there. first we have essex, middlessex, and sussex ( east and west ), which were eastern, western, and southern areas where the saxons  settled. surrey means “southern district. there used to be a wessex but it cover a big part of southern england so it was broken up into different counties. then there’s norfolk and suffolk, which literally mean “north folk” and “south folk” ( we think we’re funny kjnkfjg ) which came out of the kingdom of east anglia. then there’s kent, which was an anglo-saxon jute kingdom deriving from the celtic british word for “border” ( cantus ). julius ceasar called it “cantium”, but now it’s just kent. last we have northumberland, which is a modern way of saying “kingdom of northumbria. historically, it used to be known as northtyneland.
tribal
these counties are named after the tribes that settled there. somerset and dorset are old english names meaning “people of somerton” and “people of dorchester”. devon derives from a celtic tribe call the dumnonii, which basically means “valley dwellers”. good ol’ cornwall gets the first part of it’s name from a local anglo-saxon tribe, the cornovii; “wall” comes from the old english word “weales”, which means “foreigners”. cumbria used to be cumberland, which has links to the welsh and comes from the celtic tribe, the crymry; cumberland meant “people from cumbria”. last we have rutland which is named after a guy named rota.
odd ones
west midlands are basically just the west midlands lmao. county durham is literally just taken from it’s county city durham. then there’s merseyside, tyne & wear ( icr where these came from ajsdndkjsf ) and the ones named after their cities; greater london, greater manchester, bristol. then there’s the isle of white, no explanation needed. it’s just that.

Prices start from £199,500 for a one-bedroom apartment and £298,500 for a two bedroom, two bathroom apartment.
As the birthplace of Concorde, the historic former Filton Airfield in North Bristol was recognised worldwide for creativity, timeless design, and the collective spirit of a community that changed the world.
Now this historic local landmark is being transformed to a new city district to inspire the next generation. A place for enjoyment and entertainment. A centre of learning and a launchpad for business. A hub for industry and invention that brings together all the energy and edge of Bristol, with the supersonic new 17,000-capacity YTL Arena Complex at its heart. Brabazon is set to become the most exciting new city district in the South West.
Designed by award-winning local architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, the new homes at Brabazon address the needs of a modern lifestyle, distinguished by thoughtful design, craftsmanship and a commitment to quality.
It’s the little details that make the apartments at The Navigator Building so distinctive: intricate external brickwork, over-sized windows and high ceilings. The underfloor heating in the open-plan kitchens. The soft lighting beneath the bathroom and kitchen cabinets. And so much more is included as standard:
• Kitchens feature Silestone worktops and fully-fitted energy-efficient Siemens appliances • Bathrooms have Grohe sanitaryware and Hansgrohe brassware as well as mirrored cabinets and heated towel rails • Principal bedrooms have integrated wardrobes • Flooring is included throughout: kitchen / living areas have oak-engineered timber flooring, bathrooms have porcelain tiles and bedrooms are fully carpeted. • Every apartment features outside space – either a peaceful private balcony on upper floors or private patio terraces on the ground floor.
Jon McDiarmid, Director at YTL Developments said: “The new homes at Brabazon are unlike anything else available in Bristol at the moment. Designed by award-winning architects, the apartments at The Navigator Building offer more space, more flexibility and much, much more included as standard. We expect the apartments to prove every bit as popular as our houses, which have been selling very fast since they first launched earlier this year.”

BLOG POST: A Summer of Poetry
I have been a poet (whatever that means) for the past 2 years. However, I have also been an A-Level student, which means that finding time to write has sometimes required more creativity than doing the actual writing. That all charged at 3.20pm on the 13th of June when I finished my final exam and entered into the longest summer of my life. I was determined not to waste a second of it. That was 5 weeks ago. If you're a concerned friend wondering why you haven't seen me in a while, here is what I've been up to.
1. Writing Spoken Word for #DarwenGetsHangry
#DarwenGetsHangry is a campaign to end UK food poverty, led by a group of young people. You may have seen them on ITV News recently - they're doing very well! My brief was to sit down with some of the campaigners to chat about how food poverty has effected them and then write a spoken word piece, from their perspective, in response. Members of the campaign will perform the piece at the End Hunger UK national conference in October and then will create a poetry-video based upon the piece to use as a tool for campaigning and recruitment.
This project has been both a challenge and a huge privilege. The sensitive nature of the stories I was helping communicate required me to work closely with the Darwen Gets Hangry campaigners, who blew me away with their bravery and trust. I feel real hope that soon the government will be forced to face up to the issue of UK food poverty, and it was an honour to feature in the history these extraordinary young people are making.
I'll be adding the #DarwenGetsHangry piece to my digital portfolio as soon as I have the go-ahead from the campaigners to do so!
2. Judging an environment-themed youth poetry competition From one group of youth campaigners to another!
Although school has finished, the Cumbria branch of the School Strikes 4 Climate Movement continues, proving once and for all that we are, in fact, not just lazy skivers... (as the random elderly folk who encounter our protests seem to LOVE informing me). Excitingly, it's making a difference as well! Already this year South Lakeland District Council have declared a climate emergency as a direct response to our February meeting, local media are providing regular coverage, and only last week Lib Dem Cllr Dyan Jones contacted us to arrange a meeting.
Unsurprisingly, poetry has cemented itself at the core of the movement, proving Shelley's assertion that 'poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world'. Inspired in part by the new poet laureate's pledge to use poetry to combat climate change, the organisers at UKSCN Cumbria decided to launch a competition for all school-aged young people throughout Cumbria, with subcategories for each Key Stage. Originally, my role was just supposed to be curating a judging panel, although this somehow has evolved to me being on the panel myself, promoting at it protests, and even appearing on BBC Radio Cumbria!
Overall, the competition has received 365 entries, which isn't bad for a contest arranged by a handful of teenagers without a budget! Winning entries are still to be announced, as the other judges and I are taking our time reading through our allotted poems. With so many negative messages about the future circulating, it's good to know that we can still find hope in the next generation. In the same vein but not completely related - if you do fancy listening to some poetry about climate change, one of mine received international attention earlier this month when it ended up on Extinction Rebellion's digital newsletter! (what witchcraft...) I'm about halfway down, dressed as a penguin.
3. Helping Organise a Literature Festival
Tidelines Literature Festival is a brand new family-orientated literature festival taking place in Grange over Sands on the 17th and 18th of August, for free. They've got special guests like Kate fox, Katie Hale and Tony Vino, as well as a storm slam, crafts, and open mic, a living library and plenty more. Originally I was only supposed to be hosting the poetry open mic (are we sensing a theme here?) but talking to the organisers, I confess, I may have gotten excited and volunteered to be the volunteer liason, as well as to put together a team of young poets-in-residence, help out with social media, help with promotion and perform an hour long show (more on that later) as well.  Not that I'm complaining. Helping out with this festival has been more fun than I can say, and it hasn't even happened yet! For more information please do check out the Tidelines eventsbrite page.
4. Writing a full length show!
By far my most ambitious project this summer has been writing my first full-length show 'Kidz Theez Dayz'. This has been A LOT of work, and I've loved every minute of it (except cutting it down at the end, damn time constrictions!). 'Kidz Theez Dayz' is a (hopefully) powerful and thought-provoking spoken word/theatre piece about what it means to be a political big-mouth teenager in the 21st century. The show deals with everything from school life, the environment, first loves, mental health, powerful friendships and parental pressure, and is very firmly routed in our current political landscape. Does that sound interesting enough? I hope so.  The whole process of planning, writing, editing, revising, designing sound, rehearsing and promoting has, and continues to be, a truly valuable learning curve and one which has allowed me to produce something I'm actually very proud of.
So far, I have 2 performances lined up, one at Tidelines Literature Festival in Grange, Lancashire on the 17th of August, followed the weekend afterwards by Greenbelt Festival in Boughton House, Northamptonshire. If you are interested in coming along but can't make either of those dates, I'll be announcing further performances on twitter, and after that... Fringe 2020?
5. Other things...
Upon reflection, cramming every poetry-related event, competition or project that I've been a part of so far this summer into this one blog post could be a stretch, so please forgive me for cramming a few into this one section.
One of the greatest privileges I have is being able to go into schools and teach poetry and creative writing, as I did at a primary school in Morecambe last week as part of their 'Wonderfest'. I've also been working with another artist to create a 10-minute piece of street theatre around climate change, set post-apocalypse, that will debut at the Torchlight Carnival in September. Another friend has recruited me to help organise a showcase of talented young artists, in aid of Ovarian Cancer, which we are busy planning and which I will be hosting. I've also finally had the time to start this blog! Hello, by the way.
