It's December 22nd, ♾️ National Mathematics Day in India. On this day in 1887, the brilliant mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan was born in Erode, Tamil Nadu. Ramanujan was responsible for advances in number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions, including solutions to mathematical problems until then considered unsolvable. Schools and universities throughout India celebrate his birthday now with math contests, games, demonstrations, and other educational events. In 2017, the day’s significance was enhanced by the opening of the Ramanujan Math Park in Kuppam, Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. 
Ramunajan's genius was obvious from childhood. By the age of 12, he’d mastered trigonometry and developed many of his own theorems. Ramanujan’s peers at the time said they rarely understood him and stood in respectful awe of him, but his ideas were too novel for the leading mathematicians in India to be bothered with. 
In 1913, when Ramanujan was 25, British mathematician G.H. Hardy became enamored with his theorems and got him into Cambridge University. Ramanujan thrived in Britain and was soon elected to be a member of the London Mathematical Society. In 1918, at the age of 30, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society – one of the youngest persons to ever achieve this esteemed position. 
Ramanujan returned to India in 1919 because the food in Britain didn't agree with him. His health continued to deteriorate, and he died in 1920 at the tender age of 32. His achievements in mathematics, however, continue to live on and grow ever larger. His notebooks of unpublished material are a source of new ideas to this day. Of his thousands of theorems, all but a dozen or so have by now been proven correct. A century after his death, researchers are still discovering that mere comments in his writings about "simple properties" and "similar outputs" were themselves profound and subtle number theory results.

Chidambaram who emphasized the need to identify gifted children from an early age and nurture their talents.

Addressing students and teachers, the Padma Vibhushan recipient and a key architect of the county’s nuclear programme, Dr R.Chidambaram referred to the mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan who topped the class until standard XI but thereafter lost interest in all subjects but Mathematics. He said that the focus should be on mentoring such talents as there are outstanding potentials in all socio-economic groups in the country. Dr. Chidambaram devoted a greater part of his speech to the developments in science and technology, especially nuclear science, India’s achievement in this field and shared his thoughts about the 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests. Students, he said, should be aware that the nuclear programme not only enhances national security but also brings benefits to areas such as agriculture and medicine.
He dreamt of an India which is economically developed, scientifically advanced and militarily strong.  KiiT International School, he said, is one of the best international schools in Odisha and is counted among the top schools in East India with emphasis not merely on academic progress but also overall mental, emotional and personality development of the child. Founder of the KIIT Group of Institutions, Dr. Achyuta Samanta hailed the academic progress of the school and credited both the parents and the teachers for the good values imbibed in students such as discipline and character building.
His message to the students was to be good to themselves for their own development. “Try to be good to yourself. Then everything will be good for you. You will one day become a great person like Dr Chidambaram,” the Founder said. Chancellor of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) Satya S Tripathi recalled his formative years as a kid in the Ravenshaw Collegiate School, Cuttack as he talked about the pivotal role that a school plays in the growth and holistic development of a child. He said that students should always have an open mind and inculcate a spirit of enquiry. Teachers as well should be kind to students who come with different IQs. The ex-diplomat, who has held several key positions in India and abroad, including at the United Nations, opined that student should have small plans and make the best of it. “Every time, you have the little opportunity, make the best use of it. Each one of you is brilliant. Find your own brilliance,” he said.
He felt that citizens have been “irresponsible” to climate change and that students need to engage more and more on it as the issue is challenging enough to threaten our existence. Chairperson KiiT International School Dr Mona Lisa Bal,gave example to today's millennials who feel entitled and are self-obsessed, engage in social media mindlessly and over-stressing their life as it appears on social media. Inspired everyone to analyse their respective locus of control to focus on their targets instead of getting dissuaded. Dr. Sanjay Suar, Principal addressed the challenges and the achievements of the School. The school's commitment to quality education, its successful digital learning experience during the pandemic and its grand comeback nationally and internationally were highlighted, finding resonance in the members of the audience. He was an English mathematician, known for his achievements in number theory and mathematical analysis. In biology, he is known for the Hardy–Weinberg principle, a basic principle of population genetics.

G. H. Hardy is usually known by those outside the field of mathematics for his 1940 essay A Mathematician's Apology, often considered one of the best insights into the mind of a working mathematician written for the layperson.

Hardy is credited with reforming British mathematics by bringing rigour into it, which was previously a characteristic of French, Swiss and German mathematics.

Starting in 1914, Hardy was the mentor of the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, a relationship that has become celebrated. Hardy almost immediately recognised Ramanujan's extraordinary albeit untutored brilliance, and Hardy and Ramanujan became close collaborators. In an interview by Paul Erdős, when Hardy was asked what his greatest contribution to mathematics was, Hardy unhesitatingly replied that it was the discovery of Ramanujan. In a lecture on Ramanujan, Hardy said that "my association with him is the one romantic incident in my life".

Hardy was extremely shy as a child, and was socially awkward, cold and eccentric throughout his life. The mathematicians of Ramanujam’s time looked at him as a brilliant man. They were amazed at his ability to theorize functions and theorems. G.H.Hardy, one of his mentors from Cambridge University, compared Ramanujan to the likes of Euler and Jacobi, the legendary mathematicians who set the stage for multiple leaps in progress. Ramanujam’s methods of arriving at solutions were said to be a mix of intuition and logical induction. 
There have been quite a few pop culture adaptations about the life of the legendary mathematician. Some of these include the movie The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015), and the Indo-British film Ramanujan (2014).
There have been multiple Indian stamps issued that picture Ramanujam on them. His achievements are celebrated to this day by schools across India. Mathematics Day is celebrated at schools and there are competitions, quizzes and other math events conducted to commemorate the day. 
To celebrate Mathematics Day, Xtra Curriculum will be organizing a day of Math exploration on Saturday, December 18th, 2021. The agenda of the day is as follows:
