10.30 am on a Sunday still thinking about what might have been if Stefania's manuscript on the sociology of fashion hadn't been lost in the war.
Some of it is in her Bluszcz articles but she develops a nice dialectic about silhouettes & form/function & masculinity/femininity & the false promise of women's emancipation coupled to financial independence under industrial capitalism & how that's represented in women's fashion trends from the turn of the century to the 1920s, how you're free of one yoke (obligatory marriage + spousal role, dependence on husband) only to don another (dependence on wage labor to survive).
She also predicts that, in the 20th century, women's fashion will vacillate between more sumptuous hourglass silhouettes / traditionally "feminine" styles for social roles that eschew visible labor & more androgynous styles, "prepubescent" silhouettes, according to the boom & bust of economies. Stefania was writing in the 1920s and did she fucking miss? She did not!!!
