WORLD-CLASS EMERGENCY – HESHIKIRI HASEBE X READER
Tumblr media
Hasebe can do a lot of things. Keeping calm when you're sick is not one of them.
CONTENT.⠀gender-neutral reader, sickfic, fluff, flirting? not sure tbh but saniwa/reader is a menace. I just forgot to cross-post here wwww

“Hasebe, it’s just a…” you were cut off by a sudden loud sneeze, not exactly fitting with the dignified and graceful persona you’ve crafted for yourself. “Excuse me. It’s just a cold.”
Hasebe huffed. “Absolutely not! I’ve failed you by allowing you to catch such an illness.”
“It’s not—”
“I shall find Shokudaikiri—we must get you something warm to eat. Would you like some tea first? That, I can prepare.”
“Hasebe—”
“As your faithful servant, I am at your beck and call. This time, I will not fail you—”
“Hasebe!” you snapped, exasperated. As much as you appreciated him fussing over you, it really was not a big deal. Winter was approaching and your body wasn’t quite accustomed to such low temperatures. You’d just forgotten to close the window before you slept last night. With your habit of kicking off the blanket in your sleep, you woke up with a runny nose and a sore throat. You sighed, a fond smile still making its way to your face. “I know you’re worried about me, but really, I’ll be fine. You’re going to get grey hair if you keep stressing like this.”
“But…”
“No buts !” You put your hands on your hips in a mock scolding manner, furrowing your brows for good measure. “Relax! That is an order!”
It was amusing, to say the least, seeing him stand awkwardly—a stark contrast to his usual composure. He looked as though you’d seriously reprimanded him even though it wasn’t your first time lightheartedly nagging him like this. Sure, having a cold was annoying. It distracted you from even the most menial tasks. Not to mention how it was more annoying to only be able to breathe from one nostril. Though you disliked the stuffiness that came with wearing several layers of fabrics, you still (begrudgingly) donned another robe and wrapped a scarf around your neck. It was helping just a bit, but you were wishing summer would come soon.
“Hey, look at me,” you said softly, internally cringing at how nasal you sounded. “I’ll be fine, Hasebe. I promise. So don’t stress too much about me, yeah?” You stepped forward and took his hands in yours, a gesture that made him look to the side as an attempt to hide the blush on his cheeks. The tips of his ears betrayed him. “If you’re still worried, I can pass your duties to someone else. That way, you can stay with me. How does that sound?”
He grumbled something under his breath. You couldn’t help but giggle at how easy it was to fluster him recently. While you weren’t that keen on having him loom over your shoulder every minute, you did enjoy his company. You didn’t need that much medical attention—really, you could just sleep it off—but you’d be lying if you said you didn’t like having him close. He's loyal, caring, and always prepared (perhaps too prepared) for any situation.
He cleared his throat. “I will brew us some tea. It won’t take long.”
“Get a book from the library too. Anything is fine.” You grinned. What you were going to say next would fluster him—you just knew it. “I like it when you read to me.”
“I—” he sputtered, his face turning beet red. He cleared his throat again and regained his composure, though the flush on his cheeks still remained. “Of course, Master. I’d be happy to.”
Ah, how adorable he was.

Toukentober Day 1: Leader
sword: Hizen Tadahiro contents: angst with happy end word count: 2500K cw: Hurt/Comfort, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Angst with a Happy Ending, PTSD, Scars, Blood, Bad Injury, Mentions of Death
overview: First mission out that Hizen has given the leadership role. An unexpected outcome to the killer's sword but the saniwa put their trust into him, even if he is quite distant from the sage. However, when he arrives back with the first team - things are not what the saniwa had expected and runs to confront Hizen.
Tumblr media
“Aruji!! The first team is back!”
Lightning crashed with the thudding rain droplets, the citadel shook as the silhouette of someone in the doorway to the library that the saniwa was currently resting. Their head rose and looked at the poor sword that was drenched from the heavy rain outside. What weather to welcome back the first team, perhaps they should treat them to some cookies for their hard work and make up from the lousy weather. Most of the swords were huddled together somewhere in the citadel staying warm from the bitter cold, yet the swords that just arrived home had to walk through the raged storm. The saniwa closed their book as they sat up in their big chair near the fire, a smile on their face as they looked at Hotarumaru.
“Lovely. Please tell Hizen to see me to give me the overview of the mission when he cleans up. What a shame that on his first mission he is the leader and he has to come back to such miserable weather.” They clicked their tongue slightly with a fond smile on their lips as they rose to put away their book, “Please tell him to take his time. I don’t want to rush him after he worked so hard.”
“Um…” Hotarumaru started only to fall silent. His hands fiddled with one another as he rocked back and forth on his feet. His green eyes stared at the ground, refusing to make eye-contact as he tried to find confidence to start the next sentence.
Immediately, the saniwa paused from putting the book back into the bookcase and looked over at the small Ootachi. This smile fell as the cold air of the storm swooped in and stole their breath away. Even being so close to the fire, it felt as though winter had come early and threatened to freeze them alive in the very spot they stood. They tried to wait patiently for Hotarumaru to continue but it seemed like they weren’t going to be able to do so without further prompting. Their heart raced as they asked: “What is it?”
The firefly sword snapped out of his nervous trance, his body straightening and his arms falling to their side as his grassy green eyes locked with the sage’s. His eyebrows were knitted in concern as he said the words that the saniwa never wanted to hear.
“He was taken to the infirmary. He was badly hurt and-”
Thunder boomed almost as loud as Hotarumaru’s words. The book that almost made it back to its home in the bookcase crashed to the floor as the saniwa sprinted out of the library, not bothering to hear the rest of what Hotarumaru was about to say or to grab a form of protection against the storm. It didn’t matter how the thunder rattled their bones or how the rain pelted their skin as they ran to where Hizen laid. What mattered was that the sword they chose to lead the mission was now badly hurt and the responsibility rested upon their shoulders. It was supposed to be an act of trust from the saniwa to Hizen. He was always so distant and always reduced himself to just being a killer’s sword. He was there to kill and that was it. It didn’t matter that he liked sake, or sweets. It didn’t matter that whenever he killed, he shook from the action of it.
But it mattered to them. Hizen mattered to them.
It was meant to be a simple mission with no killing. They made sure of it. They did their research so Hizen could see that they could lead a group. That he was more than capable of doing more than just killing and he didn’t have to settle to be defined by his past. Why did this happen?
The door rattled as they pushed it open with a rushed and forceful movement. Their body was dripping wet, their cheeks rosy from the cold, and their body shivered from either the cold or the situation that was presented to them. Inside the Infirmary, Hizen laid in the bed as Monoyoshi dabbed at his wounds and wrapped them in clean wrappings. Hizen’s hair had droplets of rain that was mixed in with his red and black locks. His eyes were painfully closed as new wounds littered his body. He was bleeding from everywhere. Any new bandage was quickly colored red. His left eye opened faintly to look at the saniwa, only to painfully shut once more as Monoyoshi dabbed on more medicine to his shoulder where the deepest wound lay. It was already stitched shut but it seemed like needed a bit more disinfection before he could wrap the bandages around it.
“What happened?” A ghost of a voice rose in the quiet room that was drowned in the music of the thudding rain. It was shaky and barely recognizable, but it was surely the saniwa’s voice. When did they speak? Their mind was everywhere, yet only in one place at the same time.
Monoyoshi finished dabbing the ointment on the tender flesh before throwing away the new soiled cotton ball. A normally shining face now only gave the faintest smile as they walked over to the saniwa and brought them to the corner of the room, away from the hurt sword. Hizen’s tired red eyes watched as the duo left him, his eyes trying to focus on them from the bed but quickly his eyelids felt too heavy and closed once more. His breath shaky as he started to drift off ever so slightly.
“He is alright, Aruji. He may not look at it from his wounds but he will make it.” Monoyoshi gently grabbed their forearm and it was only then did the sage realized how much they were shaking. Of course Monoyoshi would comfort them when they look like a leaf threatening to fall off the branch in Autumn. “Hizen was the only one that was hurt in the first team. We were tracking Prince Ōama when suddenly Kebiishi appeared. We were split up at the time but… Hizen told Chiganemaru to find the rest of the team while he ran and held off the Kebiishi. I’m not sure what would have happened to the team if it wasn’t for him but we were able to retreat before anyone broke. I’m sorry to say but we couldn’t meet our mission’s goal…”
“Nonsense. You making it back alive is what truly matters.” They sniffled, bringing their sleeve up to their face to wipe the wet droplets. One great thing about rain is that you can’t tell tears from rain droplets. A heavy sigh left their lungs as he looked at the sleeping figure on the bed. Even so close to breaking, he looked so peaceful. “Monoyoshi, would you mind giving me some time with him? As well as telling Mutsunokami and Nankaitarou about him? I’m sure they will want to rush over to see him.”
“Of course, Aruji.” Monoyoshi gave a small bow before looking over at Hizen. His forced cheery smile left as his brows knitted in concern. “I gave him some medication to help with the pain so he is probably going to be very sleepy for a while as he heals. Please let me know if there is anything I can get the both of you.”
A final smile found its way to his face as he gave the saniwa’s hand a small squeeze of comfort before leaving the room as quiet as he could. With the small rattle of the door closing, they looked over at the sleeping form. His eyes finally were not squeezed shut and looked peaceful. The scowl that normally resided on his face was now replaced with a neutral expression as he drifted into sleep. Their steps were hesitant as they made their way to his bed and to the seat that sat next to it. The heavy blanket to keep him from the cold seemed to hide a good majority of wounds that now painted his body. However, there were still many more shallow cuts on his face and chest. As well as the deep shoulder wound that Monoyoshi was just taking care of. Their eyes gazed at Hizen’s neck, an area of his body that was often covered by bandages. A scar imprinted onto his skin. It surrounded his whole neck. That’s right… Hizen’s previous master was beheaded and now Hizen wears the scar as a reminder. Hizen never talked about his previous master to them or anyone, for that matter. All they knew about them was that they were a killer and had some connection to Ryōma, Mutsunokami’s previous master.
Staring so earnestly at the scar, they failed to notice that Hizen had shifted and began to wake. It was only when his head fell to the side to look at the sage, did they notice. His red eyes were still barely opened and it seemed like he was struggling to even focus his gaze upon who was sitting next to him.
“Stop staring…” He groaned as his eyes fell shut once more and he took a deep breath. “I failed. You can leave.”
A deep-set frown was placed upon their lips as they looked at Hizen’s pained, yet forced sleeping expression. Clearly, he wanted to drop the topic and distance himself even more from the saniwa. He was hurt and was not in the mood. All these things were so clear… But they couldn’t help but speak.
“You came back alive and that is all I wanted. But Hizen, you shouldn’t have faced the Kebiishi all alone. I know you were protecting your team but you could have died. Please, be more careful next time.”
“What use is a sword that can’t kill when ordered to? Should of broke on the battlefield.”
A cold air filled the room. Hizen’s narrow eyes turned to the wall, away from his new master. An unsettling silence settled between the two figures as the saniwa bit their lip, hands clenching at their robes on their lap. Their shoulders shook as they tried to hold back tears from their eyes.
“How could you say that?”
“I’m a killer’s blade. If I can’t kill, I’m better off broken. That is the only use I am good for.”
“That isn’t true!” They screamed, making Hizen flinch in the bed and finally look at them. Their head was lowered as they tried to control their shaking body, taking deep breaths as Hizen watched in shock. He always knew the saniwa who was gentle to all the swords and only strict when giving direct orders in stressful movements. He had never heard their voice become this loud that even the thunder outside couldn’t overpower them.
Their hand shot out and grabbed hold of Hizen’s. His body shuttered slightly from the sudden physical contact and he stared at them frozen. Their head rose to reveal tears threatening to tip over and run down the cheeks as they looked at the sword in the bed. Their hand was firm, yet gentle. Hizen wouldn’t be able to slip from their hold unless he actively tried. Yet, it wasn’t forceful where he felt a lot of pressure. Despite the cold and the shivering of their body, their hand was warm.
“You are alive, Hizen. You can feel my hands holding yours right now, right? You enjoy so many things in the citadel, I see it! I see how much you enjoy sake or sweets I bring home from the market. Why else do you think I always make sure there is something sweet here? Hizen… Your job is no longer assassinating people, I will make sure I never put you in that position. Your job is to protect people. You already proved that you can do that! Today! You took on a powerful foe so you could protect your team like a great leader! Your past doesn’t define you, Hizen. Not anymore if you don’t allow it to. Please… Never talk like that again.”
Their joined hands fell to the soft bedding as the saniwa cried. Their shaking was nearly uncontrollable. Hiccups filled the room and sniffles of trying to catch their breath. What could be said to such words or to make them stop crying? It’s not like Hizen was ever put in such a position before. The drowsiness in his body had begun to fade from the scream. The raising tension in his body lessened and his red eyes focused on their joined hands. He slowly grasped their hand, rubbing his rough thumb over their soft skin. A familiar action that the saniwa once used on him after a night terror. A moment he tried to block out of his mind from how pathetic he thought of himself. Yet, the saniwa said nothing about it. They calmed him down and sat next to him, rubbing their thumb over his hand while holding it. Sometimes even petting his head to lull him into sleep. Even flinching from the physical contact, he enjoyed the soft feeling of it. He never had someone treat a killer so kindly before.
“Sorry.” He muttered softly. So faint that he was sure that the heavy rain outside drowned him out and he would have to repeat himself again, even if he wanted to die from embarrassment from doing so. Luckily, they shook their head softly and their thumb gently rubbed against Hizen’s hand.
“No, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have yelled like that. Seeing you so hurt and hearing how you feel about the mission really upset me but I shouldn’t have yelled like that.”
Another silence fell into the room as the saniwa rested their head against the mattress, exhaustion coming over them from the sobbing and adrenaline rush of the news. The silence was comfortable compared to the one before. Hizen’s hand hesitantly stroked the saniwa’s head, trying to mimic the gesture from the memory yet unconfident in their abilities.
“I will try… to learn how to… l-live another way.”
They looked up at Hizen, making his hand freeze in the air unsure where to put it. Their expression was pure shock as they lifted themself up. Hizen never actively spoke to them and they were accepting that the conversation of the night would have ended at the sorries before they left the room. A soft blush could be seen on his face as he looked down at the blanket that covered his body. Part of the saniwa wanted to ask if he was sure and have a further conversation on it. They knew the sword better than they thought and knew that would only make him more uncomfortable.Instead they smiled, and gently patted his head with him flinching slightly, only to lean into it.
“Thank you, Hizen. I will be by your side as you try to learn to enjoy life another way. We will go at your pace, I promise.”

Yandere Yagen Toushirou / female reader.
Synopsis: Something seems different about Yagen after he returned from his kiwame training.
Warnings: A touken danshi breaks, use of drugs.
Tumblr media
It all began when Yagen returned from his kiwame training. You noticed that he had changed a lot - in appearance, strength, and even some parts of his personality feel different. He seems more eager to participate in sorties, he's become extremely knowledgeable in drugs and their effects on the human body, and not to mention, he's far more protective of you now. You didn't think too much about it though, since he's naturally protective of his masters as the sword of loyalty.
You knew that Yagen only wanted to keep you safe from harm...
... Did he? Or was there something more to that?
"I'll protect you no matter what comes, general."
Your eyes widened at the tantou's sudden proclamation. You were in the middle of treating his wounds in the repairing room when he uttered those words, and you let out an airy laugh before setting your tools aside to caress the top of his head.
"That's really sweet of you," you cooed, brushing his bangs away from his pale face with a smile, "But I already know that. You tell me the same thing every day, even way before you went on your kiwame training." You then cupped his cheek, your thumb gingerly tracing the shallow cut that was engraved there during the sortie he had just returned from. With a soft sigh, you picked up a bandaid and gently placed it over the cut. "Try not to get yourself hurt next time. It pains me to see you in this state, Yagen."
Yagen's eyes widened for a split second before he quickly looked away, his cheeks flushing at your expressed worry for him.
"I promise to return to this citadel unharmed in the future, so that I won't waste any of your time and resources," he said. Surprise etched itself on your expression. You stared at him, lips parted slightly as you tried to formulate a response. Moments passed with no words exchanged between the two of you. In the end, you only called his name in a quiet voice.
"Yagen..." You embraced the tantou without another word and pulled him against your chest, with one arm going around his waist and one hand pushing his face into your shoulder. He immediately stiffened in your arms, having not expected this development.
"G-General?" he stammered. You stroked his head, your fingers carefully combing through his ebony tresses as if you were a mother trying to comfort her son. Heat crept up his cheeks at the affection you were showering him with; although he was embarrassed, he also enjoyed what you were doing to him. It felt nice, comforting, and it made him feel at ease. He always felt at peace whenever he was graced with your warm presence, and he wanted to keep that all to himself.
"Yagen, please don't say that," you murmured, "I don't mind wasting my time, energy and resources on you. You're very precious to me." Pulling away from him, you then held his face before leaning in to plant a kiss on his forehead. "I'll always heal you when you get hurt."
A warm, tingling sensation bloomed from the spot you had pressed your lips against, causing Yagen's face to glow with a soft red hue. You didn't miss his blush and chuckled fondly.
'I... love general,' he thought. He then placed his hands over yours, entwining your fingers together. You smiled at him, unaware of the dangerous and obsessive thoughts his mind was drowning in.
Yagen wants to protect you with everything he has. Even if he has to be wounded or break for you...
You are his to protect.
A few days later, you received a notice from the Government of Time regarding the activities of the History Revisionists.
"These are the names of the swords that will be sent to the Memory of Shokuho. They will be part of the primary unit," you said as you handed a slip of paper to your secretary, Shokudaikiri Mitsutada, "I have uncovered the enemy's objective. The History Retrograde Army is going to be stationed at Honnouji Temple, on the night of the 21st of June, 1582, the day of the Honnouji Incident."
"The Honnouji Incident..." he echoed, eyes narrowing, "Is the enemy planning to let Nobunaga-sama live?"
You nodded. "That's correct. The enemy is planning to intercept Mitsuhide's surprise attack at night. All the other details, including my directive, is written down on that paper."
"Understood, aruji." When he turned on his heels to leave your office, you rushed forward and stopped him by wrapping your arms around his torso tightly, your face burying itself in his back.
"Please be careful," you murmured, "Come home safely, okay? I don't want to lose any of you."
Twisting himself around in your grasp, Shokudaikiri then cupped your face with a gloved hand, his thumb caressing your cheek with a hint of tenderness. The loving look that crossed his handsome features made your cheeks heat up slightly and you bit your bottom lip.
"You won't lose any of us. I'll make sure that nobody breaks during the sortie," he said, leaning down to plant a reassuring kiss on your lips. You let out a surprised gasp and immediately pulled yourself away from him, your hand flying up to cover your mouth. The tachi rubbed the back of his neck whilst chuckling sheepishly at your reaction. "I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist. But please, take that kiss as a promise from me, my aruji." He flashed you a bold smirk before exiting from the room to gather the swords that have been selected to participate in the upcoming sortie.
As he left, he was oblivious to the pair of watchful eyes following his every move, which harboured an unfathomable amount of hostility deep within. Yagen gazed at Shokudaikiri's retreating figure with a glare.
Another obstacle to get rid of...
Stepping out of the shadows, the tantou thinned his eyes into slits as his lips quirked sinisterly.
As Shokudaikiri stood next to the time portal, he made sure that all of the chosen swords are prepared to leave.
"Is everyone ready?" he asked, eyeing each member of his team. The unit he was going to lead consisted of Heshikiri Hasebe, Souza Samonji, Monoyoshi Sadamune, Tsurumaru Kuninaga and Yagen Toushirou. Everyone nodded at their leader's question. "Excellent. Let's head out with style!"
After activating the time portal, the entire team was promptly transported to the Memory of Shokuho in 1582. The moment they arrived in the era, Yagen slinked behind the unsuspecting Shokudaikiri, his hand inching towards the hilt of his tantou. His dark bangs cast a shadow over his glinting eyes as he steeled his nerves for the deed he's about to carry out.
"I hope you'll have no regrets," Yagen whispered.
It's time for Shokudaikiri to perish in the flames with Nobunaga, just like Yagen did according to history.
You were utterly horrified upon receiving the shocking news of what had transpired during the sortie from Konnosuke. When you heard that the sortie team had returned earlier than expected from Ichigo, you immediately became worried and rushed out of your office to be greeted with a devastating sight in the courtyard. The little tantous were giving the gravely injured swords first aid to prevent their wounds from festering, and when you couldn't find Shokudaikiri anywhere, dread pooled in your stomach.
"Mi-Mitsu-kun... Where is Mitsu-kun?" you asked in a shaky voice.
Monoyoshi solemnly approached you with the hilt of Shokudaikiri's tachi, which had the blade cleanly snapped off. Your eyes widened as your hands flew up to muffle your shuddering gasp.
"He... broke...?" you whispered incredulously. You were unable- no, you didn't want to believe it. Why did he and how could he have broken that easily? The Memory Shokuho wasn't supposed to be a challenging map to conquer, and Shokudaikiri was also one of your most experienced tachis. "No... It can't be..."
With trembling hands, you took Shokudaikiri's hilt out of the wakizashi's grasp and held it against your chest. Eyes glazing over with tears, you then spun on your heels and fled from your swords, prompting some of them to call for you.
"Aruji, wait!" Hasebe was about to chase you but Yagen quickly stopped him by standing in his path with his arms spread out. Faltering in mid-step, the uchigatana regarded the tantou with a small frown to wordlessly question him. Yagen shook his head.
"I'll go after general," he said, "You're all wounded, so please repair yourselves first. I'll check up on all of you as soon as I've made sure that she's stable enough to be on her own." Asides from Yagen who only sustained minor injuries from the sortie, the other swords on his team were in terrible shape... thanks to a certain tantou who was cunning enough to lead them straight into the enemy's trap without rousing any suspicion from them. The Awataguchi sword smirked internally when Hasebe hesitantly agreed to his suggestion.
"I leave her in your capable hands then, Yagen," Hasebe uttered.
Without another moment to waste, Yagen left the others to search for his beloved master. It wasn't a hard task as he easily found you weeping in one of the hallways whilst clutching onto Shokudaikiri's broken form. You had collapsed on the floor, your tears flowing down your cheeks effortlessly. The sight made him knit his eyebrows together; he doesn't like seeing you cry nor does he particularly enjoy seeing you hold onto what was left of Shokudaikiri so dearly. He clenched his fists as he silently stood behind you with a shadow over his eyes.
What's so good about that candle-cutting sword anyway?
Yagen is much stronger now that he's in his kiwame form, so why aren't you giving him all of your attention? He even thought really hard to conjure up a plan to efficiently get rid of Shokudaikiri during that sortie...
"General," he called, drawing your attention. You stiffened before hastily wiping your tears away so you could look at him without appearing like a complete mess.
"Y-Yagen..."
He crouched down to your level.
"Is everything alright, general? You don't look very well," he remarked. You averted your eyes with pursed lips, feeling the waterworks coming again.
"Yes... I'm fine. Don't worry about me," you replied in a murmur. You squeaked in surprise when Yagen suddenly embraced you, pulling you flush against him. You blinked as he tightened his arms around you and placed his chin on your shoulder.
"Please don't show me your sad face anymore," said Yagen as he closed his eyes, "Shokudaikiri... He said that he loved you."
Yagen's last sentence struck you right in the heart. You always had feelings for the eye-patch wearing sword, so hearing his final message for you caused tears to brim in your eyes once more. Sobbing, you buried your face in the tantou's shoulder, making him open his eyes with a smile. Deftly pulling something out of his sleeve, he popped a restoril pill into his mouth but didn't swallow it. He then pulled away from you slightly to capture your chin in a tight grasp which surprised you. An ominous feeling settled itself in the pit of your stomach the moment your gazes met.
"What are you doing?" you asked.
"You love Shokudaikiri too, don't you?"
When you didn't respond out of embarrassment, he narrowed his eyes and slowly reduced the distance between your faces. He was so close to you that you could feel his breath fanning your lips.
"(Y/n)," he quietly began, using your given name for the first time, "Did you know? I also love you." Before you could say anything, he pressed his lips against yours. They fitted together like perfect puzzle pieces, and your eyelids fluttered shut at the foreign feeling that was stirred inside you.
When Yagen sensed you getting comfortable, he pried your lips apart and pushed the restoril into your mouth. Your eyes shot open at the feeling of him forcing something down your throat, and you accidentally swallowed the pill. You promptly broke out of his grasp, coughing loudly.
"Y-Yagen... What..." As you gradually lost consciousness, you collapsed on your side. Yagen swiftly caught your body before it could touch the floor and brought you against his chest. Leaning down, he smiled against your hair, happy that he can finally hold his beloved saniwa without restriction.
"I would be your most trusted companion in combat, so why rely on the other swords?" he cooed, stroking your cheek with the back of his fingers affectionately.

I tried to lay down and go to bed but then I couldn't stop thinking about the fact that if Kogistunemaru is actually a wild animal as he says, he probably smells awful, like just a stinky fox boi
In S1E10 when he goes off by himself on sortie it's probably because he fucking STINKS
Mikazuki and Uguisumaru only hang out with him because they're old so they have no sense of smell anymore

SAGAU except they're aware of what goes on when you go into the character menu???
Particularly when they pray as you hop onto the artifacts menu to raise em, whether is for for them, another character to which some might try to purposely mess the rolls up bc oops! looks like they can't use that now! :) guess they'll have to wait., or just to make space for more bc HOW IS YOUR ARTIFACT STORAGE FULL ARE YOU OKAY??? Σ(・∀・;)
Whenever you raise their artifacts they kinda feel bad if it rolled into the wrong subs when you raise it with them and would either apologize or say that it'll roll better on the next one, they know it will!! (it did not 😔)
That or they don't bc they felt silly and wanted to spite you so guess you gotta do a few more runs to try again teehee 😗👉👈 they eventually roll a ridiculously amazing artifact at some point, but just this once!
(or y'know the opposite where there's always this one character you always use to raise artifacts bc they always get the best rolls and best subs? yeah imagine them celebrating w you at how good the stats rolled too!!)
Kinda like how if you try to make gear in tkrb there's a chance of it shattering (therefore failing) instead of being able to create one and when that happens the character you brought with you for those will say things like "oh no, it broke! i'm so sorry :(" or "i-it's okay!! let's try again...!" or you just flat out hear sobbing noises bc your new feather low rolled all 5 into defense FLAT 😭 BASICALLY THAT YEAH

(this rant concerns tkrb but can also be applied to the wider anime scene)
as a weeb who likes knowing everything about the historical Real Things the anime is based on, you know what i find infuriating? the absolute lack of information available in english.
it makes a lot of sense, considering everything is based on japanese historical stuff, and it's a really niche topic anyway. but!! seriously?? most of the wiki pages about swords (that appear in tkrb!!!) are exclusively in japanese. even if the english page is available, it's missing so much info here and there that's available in any jp sources!! it's such a shame!!!!!!
tkrb is a very successful franchise with a huge global fanbase, so why is the vast majority of info about the historical prototypes still only available in japanese? how has nobody ever translated these articles??
i understand that translating entire wiki pages is a bit insane but to have virtually no semi-official sources on those stuff in english at all??? it's insane. im fortunate enough to be able to read japanese so i can get all the weeb info i want. but what about everyone else who cant? how am i supposed to gush about the irl facts about the swords my fav charas are based on to ppl who dont speak japanese?
i just spent the last 6 hours reading a fuck lot about historical/irl facts related to tkrb, and i simply! cannot! imagine! being equally obsessed, and having an equally huge amount of love for the franchise/characters, but not being able to access all these niche weeb info (that should be available on wiki pages) just because i dont speak the language

i present: yuichi's playlist! [spotify] [youtube]
(as of 3/14/2024)
as with most of the playlists i make, some songs are readily applicable, some just have the right Vibe, some are sorta funny... and in yuichi's case, there's a lot of a rain theme going on lol
(also, some are ones from my own tourabu mood playlist that i just had to bring over)
because i've always wanted to do this i'm gonna go through all the songs and maybe explain why i put it there or something?? yolo! playlist guide under the cut lol
i recommend having this going while you listen!
most songs (on the youtube version) have lyrics/translations where available!
there's a lot of kpop don't judge me lol
Dreamcatcher - Full Moon this is a song from dc to their fans on their first anniversary lol, so the themes of a somewhat-new bond are pretty relevant!
Seventeen- Campfire do i even need to explain? sobs this song makes my heart warm ... just thinking about yuichi & all the toudans sitting around a campfire having *sniffles* precious moments... ; A;
Rihanna - Umbrella LMAO this one is very on-the-nose but also just thinking about it's hilarious, i couldn't resist. (plus like... it's a jam. also lyrically it actually does fit!)
Dreamcatcher - Boca be prepared to see a lot of dreamcatcher w/me, they're my Favorite(TM). anyway Boca is about protecting someone from harsh words (better translation is "if those thornlike words / start to hurt you / i won't let them open that boca (mouth)") AND has a very rainy/stormy atmosphere which makes it perfect. yes i know my toudans are Sword Warriors yes i still want to protect them as best i can!! (it's more about like. bullying and hate but yknow. similar sentiments...shhh...)
The Weather Girls - It's Raining Men ...............i don't think i need to explain myself on this >.> (THO HAHA IMAGINE IF THIS WAS HOW SWORDS MANIFESTED IN HIS HONMARU i'm dead)
ToppDogg -Annie (Anniversary) another 'anniversary' type song, i think it speaks for itself. saniwa💙toudans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Clean Bandit - Rather Be lyrically, yes!! being a saniwa is not an easy or peaceful job by any means but yuichi wouldn't want to be anywhere else <3 also the song makes me think of rainy/cool moist days!
Seventeen - Home seventeen shows up a decent amount too, but what can i say? the songs fit lol. saniwa-toudan relationships might not always be 100% sunshine and rainbows, but... they are home, no?
Twice - Feel Special GOD. this song came out while i was very into tkrb a few years ago and so that plus the song itself made me actually cry when i first watched it lol. it's so fitting though, i think from toudan or yuichi's perspective. for yuichi, he clearly struggles with his self-worth, and is...well, he's no stranger to a breakdown. but ... he's got so many touken danshi around him who love him
Girls' Generation - Talk Talk no explanation needed methinks! <3 just comparing a love to the rain
SF9 - The Beat Goes On okay this song is just like... pure beach episode, everyone gathering in the sunset and having a great time being free with each other. i include it on so many playlists where i just want to imagine a joyful time with the whole cast of whatever, it just has to go here too, even if you'd be hard-pressed to get yuichi on a beach lol
Yuju - Play this is just strictly for the vibes. i don't know that yuichi has someone who dipped and hurt him like that (but it could be interesting i guess lol). the song just is perfect for the rainy atmosphere
Dreamcatcher - Piri i told u prepare for dreamcatcher lol. anyway this song is literally about like... depression and getting to a point where you need a lifeline. very yuichi, unfortunately
New Politics - One of Us another "do i even need to explain?" song ;u; it's definitely on my tkrb playlist lol. also the lyric video is kinda fun lol imagining it as different toudans at the table
Gfriend - Summer Rain just very nice rainy vibes.
Super Junior - Why I Like You this song (the whole album really) has always given me rainy/humid vibes. but also... love <3 (ofc not necessarily romantic in yuichi's case! but yknow what i mean)
Flo Rida - My House almost a joke addition but like... also almost not a joke LOL
David Cook - Come Back to Me okay this song is tkrb playlist because it's like... 100% kiwame send-off vibes. i initially added it after watching hanamaru, thinking about kashuu sending off yasusada, but i think it also suits most sendoffs very well. i wanna cry. sobs....
SF9 - RPM So I don't have a good reason for adding this to yuichi's or my tkrb playlist other than it makes me think of using time travel to go on a mission. also i just REALLY like the song... and listening to it with the rain going is mmmwah *chef kiss*. just imagine a team going up to the [time travel device] all ready to fucking GO, looking all badass in the mist and shit. and then PPEPWWW they go! and now they're ready to fuck shit up (to un-fuck the timeline)... it's the VIBES AGAIN
Darren Hayes - Bloodstained Heart no words needed <3
Dreamcatcher - Over the Sky another anniversary fan song from dc! this song just makes me so happy and like. energized. spring time. anime conventions. so it's on my tkrb playlist, but it's also a sweet and fun song so, yknow, puts it on.
Ravi - Lean on Me is this yuichi talking to a toudan? or a toudan talking to yuichi? or ? who knows, but either way, i like it. sweet and reliable.
Seventeen - Thanks just... a song about being so grateful to know and love someone.
Major Lazer - Cold Water (the one song with justin bieber i listen to unironically lol)
Seventeen - Holiday oh man just LISTEN to it, even without the lyrics it's just like. fun!! party!! chill!!
SF9 - Bibora a jam. a rainy jam. but also maybe some parts of it speak to yuichi.
Jinsoul (Loona) - Singing in the Rain KNK - Rain Super Junior - Raining Spell for Love Strictly for the vibes.
JBJ - True Colors oh man. this song makes me cry too. my heart...
Starley - Call on Me Another song that I think explains itself lol
Dreamcatcher - Reason yet another anniversary song from deukae but it fits. through all the triumphs and hardships, despair and joy, the toudans in this citadel have become his whole reason for being and they inspire him to keep going and do better and be someone they can depend on and be proud to call their saniwa.

I told myself I was going to at least get Kiwame Akita to level 99, got to level 80, and just...felt numb. There are nineteen days of Summer Regiment left, so if nothing else that's plenty of time to take a break and then come back, in theory. But for the moment, even though my plan was to take as many pictures as I could, I just can't look at my Citadel right now.
I think the reason this sudden shutdown hurts--more than the time spent--is that because TKRB relies so much on the player creating their own story, the undercurrent of this whole situation is "Your stories don't matter."
So the Great Invasion? That amazing moment where both JP and EN servers fought together against an encroaching threat, saving each others' stories in the process? That moment of cross-national bonding over wanting to protect what we loved? That didn't matter.
But it did, the devs' efforts made it matter. The promos, the sudden UI shift that added a new layer to the setting, actual story segments...there was real effort and passion on display, echoing the players'. Will the devs work be cast aside too, so easily?
Of course, there's some revenge to be had: I'll keep my swords, Saniwa OC, and the Citadel they lived in in my heart. When it hurts less, I'll imagine their daily lives again, the complicated harem I envisioned, and perhaps any new swords who catch my eye will join them.
When it hurts less.

Flowers
Tumblr media
Here he is, knelt before you as you put flowers in his hair all because you flashed him your pretty smile.
Pairing: Tonbokiri x GN!Reader
Content: Fluff, height difference, just a short drabble about Tonbokiri having a crush on saniwa :3
Note: Bringing this over from my TKRB drabble collection on AO3 ~
Tumblr media
Though his hulking stature says so otherwise, Tonbokiri is not immune to cute things.
Maybe it’s in his dutiful nature to want to protect his master. Maybe it’s something less professional, something more sentimental that makes him want to protect you. Either way, it doesn’t stop the way his heart threatens to burst right out of his chest. It’s been happening more often as of late. He’s not too keen on the idea of bothering Yagen again this week, believing that it’s something he can deal with by himself.
But here he is, knelt before you as you put flowers in his hair all because you flashed him your pretty smile.
He thinks it’s his first time seeing you so carefree. As the winter fades into spring, the citadel feels much warmer and more hospitable. His fellow touken danshi are just as pleased with the new season. The garden will be at its most beautiful and the nighttime will be more bearable. He’s looking forward to spending more time with his brothers, maybe somewhere near the mountains they’ve been planning to visit.
His eyes trace the shape of your nose, the curve of your lips, the flower tucked behind your ear. You look positively radiant today, he thinks, and it’s hard not to let his affection make itself so clear on his face.
The fact that he’s staring at you doesn’t quite sink in until his eyes meet yours. Appalled at how disrespectful and rude he’s being, he parts his lips to apologise, but your smile makes him pause in his tracks.
“What… are you thinking of, Master?”
You shrug. “Nothing. It’s just nice to see you finally relax around me. You’re always so tense, you know?”
Relieved that you weren’t displeased with him, Tonbokiri murmurs a thank you, suddenly aware of the heat in his cheeks. Letting you play with his hair isn’t an activity he ever saw himself doing or thought of, but he likes it. He likes it when you treat him so lovingly and gently, even if it’s just how you treat the touken danshi. At this moment, it’s just him who gets all of your attention. The thought makes him feel more satisfied than he’d expected. It’s not in his right to feel this way, he tries to tell himself. He is only your sword; he exists to protect and to serve you.
Still, it’s getting increasingly difficult to calm his racing heart the closer you stand to him. Your soft hands brush against his skin in a way that has him melting into your touch. He’s sure this must be one hell of a sight: big and strong Tonbokiri, letting the saniwa doll him up in such a beautiful way that would make Jiroutachi jealous. He looks far from intimidating with the pink and white flowers adorning his hair, a crown given to him by you. He can imagine how his brothers would tease him if they stumbled upon this moment.
Really, he should be more careful with his image, but as you tuck the last flower behind his ear with a pleased hum, he finds that he couldn’t care less.
As long as he gets to be under your care, he’ll endure it all.

Hi! This is my first time requesting so I'm kinda nervous how to word it out. Anyway, may I request romantic headcanons (separate ofc) for Chougi, Hyuuga and Monoyoshi? Ty! And take care.
So sorry that this took forever. I hope you still like it (●´ω`●)
Yamanbagiri Chougi, Monoyoshi Sadamune, and Hyuuga Masamune Romantic Headcanons
Tumblr media
♡ Chougi may be the most difficult for him to recognize his feelings and also be true to them.
♡ Chougi is a hardworking and dedicated sword that is all about proving himself. He is a touken danshi, not human. So many times, he thinks learning to live like a human is rather useless. He is a sword, that is all there is to it.
♡ However, that doesn't change that he does have emotions and how he is more influenced by emotions than realizes.
♡ He easily gets annoyed and angry around Manba, that is the easiest found evidence of his emotions that he simply cannot hide.
♡ There is another emotion he can't hide.... And that is when he gets praises from his favorite person, You.
♡ To be fair, you were probably not his favorite person at the start because he had no favorite person. You were simply his master and him the sword that would serve you in protecting history.
♡ Yet... You showed him special attention. You praised him after missions, you would actively talk and listen to his story. Even when he complained about Manba, you listened and didn't chide him too much. You allowed him to express his emotions.
♡ How could be not fall for you? Even if he didn't realize it.
♡ Chougi suddenly had a urge to always become MVP in battles because he knew that he would hear your praises. Suddenly he would "accidentally" run into while you were going about your daily schedule.
♡ Oh no! You are carrying a bunch of books? Suddenly Chougi is there to carry them for you because that is his job as the saniwa's sword! .... Do swords carry books now?
♡ Good luck getting him to confess first because he will not. He doesn't know what these emotions mean! He thinks he is just being the perfect sword.
♡ It is only when you confess or another sword points out how you look at Chougi, that is when the gears start turning in his head.
♡ But he can't love you. He is a sword. He is suppose to serve on the battlefield and die on the battlefield. That is his role in history.... Right?
♡ Suddenly, Chougi is no longer running into you. No longer becoming giddy when you praise him. Instead he starts to give you the cold shoulder and give small remarks of "thanks" before moving away.
♡ And it kills him every time.
♡ This man is too stubborn for his own good. He will refuse to acknowledge his feelings. Instead he will suppress and deflect.
♡ That tactic quickly fails when he sees you getting close to someone else and jealousy spikes in him. He was suppose to be your special someone. That other person isn't allowed to make you smile when he is suppose to.
♡ Once again, Chougi is working overtime to become MVP and get your attention. Randomly running into you and each time you look at him, his heart beats a bit faster.
♡ It's only then... Does he think over the words that he may harbor deeper feelings for you and realize how he doesn't want anyone else to take that place from him.
♡ Chougi is both great at words... and terrible at it when it's his own vulnerable feelings.
♡ It is one day after a mission he shined in, he requested a moment of your time. By this time, Chougi was exhausted from the mission. His outfit was more dirty than he would of liked and his hair was tussled. He had to talk to you, here and now.
♡ He took you to a quiet place in the citadel and held your hand in his gloved one. Just this action alone made him think he was going to have a heart-attack. His blue eyes refused to look at you. Instead, he focused on the mountains.
♡ "I have always aimed to be a perfect sword for my master. I am Yamanbagiri Chougi, my name comes from slaying down yamanba (mountain crone). That was my story, at least I thought it was before someone stole it from me. It doesn't matter if he really did or not, but I realize that I had emotions invested in that after all. Emotions a sword shouldn't have. I was angry that my story was stolen. Which made me realize that I don't want anything else stolen from me."
♡ He finally looks at you, "I don't want you to be stolen from me. I want to be your special someone, if you will have someone struggling with learning what emotions are."
♡ As a lover, Chougi is very doting. He leans more on physical affection over verbal. He still doesn't understand how to word things to truly convey how he feels.
♡ He still gets jealous here and there but he trusts you and doesn't control you. He knows you love him and wouldn't ever leave him.
♡ Honestly, just that makes him very confident and cocky.
♡ He is definitely the type that that will lock eyes and smirk at anyone who gets rejected by you, with his arm around your shoulder.
♡ He doesn't use pet names because he finds them a little weird still. Truthfully, he probably still refers to you as Aruji. However, there are times when he is feeling more affectionate and confident and will say your real name instead. Only in moments when you two are alone.
♡ He still has a lot to unpack about emotions and how to go about them in a healthy manner but he is much more willing to learn to live and enjoy another side of being a touken danshi if it means that he can stay by your side.
Tumblr media
♡ Monoyoshi is someone who loves life and actively seeks out what it means to be human. He wants to experience it all!
♡ Before his life as a Touken Danshi, Monoyoshi was a sword of Tokugawa Ieyasu and got passed along in the Ieyasu family. He saw the family strive and saw many of his masters as a child then grow into fine warriors.
♡ Being able to have the chance to live for himself is one that he would never take for granted.
♡ Monoyoshi wears his heart on his sleeve. He is always seen smiling and helping others, either by his great luck or his soothing words.
♡ Monoyoshi loves kids and normally always the first to welcome any new tantous to the citadel, or help any random kid that he sees when you take him shopping with you.
♡ A baby fussing in front of you two? Suddenly Monoyoshi starts to sing a lullaby or making silly faces at the child. Most times, the baby quiets down and looks at Monoyoshi with interest.
♡ He also shows you the same affection. You may be the saniwa but he actively tries to learn who you are as a person.
♡ Monoyoshi is very sensitive to negative emotions and is always there when he feels like something is wrong.
♡ As caring and affectionate as he is, he may not realize when his feelings turn from platonic to romantic. That is something you can't learn from observing.
♡ He was there when his previous masters got married... but when did they fall in love? He didn't know.
♡ That is an aspect in life that brings him great interest because he wants to understand it so badly. Love is clearly so powerful to the heart that he wants to understand what it feels like.
♡ He expresses these wishes to you before either of you have any feelings for one another.
♡ Queue the romcom movie nights. He will watch everyone of them and you will be there on the ride for him to ask all the questions.
♡ "Why did they suddenly fight? I thought they loved each other?" "Uh... probably for an interesting conflict in the movie but sometimes people don't see eye to eye, even if they do love each other."
♡ He is so confused by this because he thought love was the most powerful element and nothing could get in the way of that.
♡ Which starts his plan....
♡ "Aruji! I want to do all the romcom montages too! Will you help me?"
♡ He looks at you with that puppy eyes... How could you say no? Which starts your adventure of fake(?) dating and doing all the scenarios you see in romcoms.
♡ Dancing, teaching each other a skill, looking into each other eyes, watching movies, going to amusement park, taking cheesy picture... Everything
♡ It was just something to do to show a them what it was like to be in a romcom, if people actually did these things or if it was just for the screen.
♡ However, it became so much more than that.
♡ From just acting out the scenes, Monoyoshi began to realize how much he truly wanted to live these parts of his life with you. He didn't want to just do things that were in romcoms, he wanted to truly have special moments with you and make treasured memories for you.
♡ He was also terrified of messing up and causing a big endgame conflict that was always there. He never wanted to see you hurt or be the one to hurt you.
♡ It was a day that you two were suppose to have a picnic outing together, he decided to bring up his true feelings or end the montage because he didn't want to make you uncomfortable.
♡ With his amazing luck, he sat down next to you and quickly found a four leaf clover. He handed it to you with his charming smile and said:
♡ "Aruji, I am truly so lucky to have met you. You are like this four leaf clover to me. There was so many chances I would of never met you, yet I did and you made me an even luckier sword. Doing these romcom scenes with you made me realize that I want every moment to be special with you because you are special to me. Sorry if this is out of line."
♡ Not much chances after you two become official because you both have already been rather affectionate with one another. Monoyoshi LOVES complimenting you at every thing. He also loves holding your hand and giving you any gift he can find on his missions.
♡ He is such a doting partner. Just being next to you makes him shine with happiness.
♡ He also loves pet names. Loves calling you: Honey, Sweetheart, or my Clover.
♡ He still worries a bit over there being conflict between the two of you, so he is always the first that demands that the two talk it out if there is ever something that upsets the other. To not hold anything in and be considerate.
♡ Monoyoshi doesn't ever want to lose you and puts his all into the relationship to make you happy and show you all the love he has in his heart. (人´ω`*)♡
Tumblr media
♡ Originally, Hyuuga was created to be a sword of prayer but his first master decided to use him in battle instead. Which gives him an unique view on the world compared to some other swords.
♡ Hyuuga understands very well the emotions of people when he was a sword of prayer and he also understands why war/battles break out.
♡ He is a very understanding person and opened-minded. Which makes him more willing to try romance, even though he is a sword.
♡ Hyuuga is always the person that keeps a watchful eye out on the citadel and sees inner conflicts or someone having a bad.
♡ He goes out of his way to help in his own way. If there is a leak in the citadel and some swords are upset with getting dirty, he will go out of his way to repair it so it makes their everyday a bit easier. He doesn't need to be asked, if it helps others - he will do it.
♡ Same goes for you. You are the saniwa of the citadel and plenty of tedious task rest on your shoulders. He tries to carry even a little bit to make it easier on you.
♡ You need to deliver letters but still have paperwork to do? Hyuuga is up for the task without any hesitation. That is the type of person he is.
♡ He doesn't put others on pedestals and view them as they are: Human.
♡ His previous master had plenty of flaws of his own. Yet, Hyuuga still liked him for the man he was. He saw the good and bad of him.
♡ Which makes him so open-minded whenever he talks to other.
♡ Plenty of times he has been by your side and if he saw you troubled, he would try to help relieve it. Either by doing a task for you to help with stress or ask you what was wrong.
♡ Many probably view Hyuuga as someone who might not understand the complicated emotions of humans, but he is probably one of the swords that understand it best.
♡ He will give realistic advice. Understanding the emotional part of what is troubling others but also giving the logistical aspect to problem-solve it.
♡ Hyuuga probably offers often to serve as the attendant if he sees you struggling because he wants to help.
♡ Hyuuga is very good at math, so he probably offers to take any tasks that involve a fair share of mathematics to help out. He is quick with it and he actually really enjoys solving any math problems.
♡ You both get into a daily routine of being hunched over as each of you work on your own tasks. A peaceful silence in the room that is only broken when one of you notices the time and decides it's time for a break/meal.
♡ This routine becomes something that Hyuuga quickly falls into pace with and comes to enjoy. He truly enjoys being around you and helping you.
♡ Any thought that comes to the top of your head, he will gladly listen. Especially if it's a story of your youth. He wants to learn about you. Not as the saniwa, but as (Y/N). The human that he treasures spending time with.
♡ Hyuuga has a big sweet tooth when it comes to umeboshi. Even on days when he is on "break" from task work with you. He will find himself at your door, asking if you wanted to share some with him.
♡ It is moments like this that makes Hyuuga realize that he is no longer only a sword, but a Touken Danshi. He is able to choose what he wants to do and have freedom.
♡ In the past, he would never have the chance to ask his master if they wanted to share a sweet treat or to stand in the rain to enjoy the feeling on his skin.
♡ Being around you makes him feel alive. Truly alive.
♡ The day he asks if he can hold your hand, he holds it so gently like it is the most fragile thing.
♡ Slowly he brings it to his face, his face warms as he feels your hand on his cheek.
♡ "You make me feel alive and I don't want to ever forget."
♡ Hyuuga likes being physical affection. Either handholding, or just sitting close enough that there is small touches. He likes to show his feelings through touches, rather than words.
♡ Affection glances as well. His eyes are so full of love when he looks at you while you are doing your work. You can always catch him glancing at you with that affection gaze. Only for him to smile when you catch him and he goes back to his task at hand.
♡ If you want to hear him say those three special words, he will. However, he likes to show them so you never doubt him. He truly cherishes you and find any boring task to be fantastical when it is with you.

Yandere Namazuo Toushirou / gender-neutral reader.
Synopsis: Namazuo couldn't care less if he lost his memories since he can always make new ones, but nothing in this world can replace his saniwa if he lost them.
Warnings: Reader dies.
Tumblr media
It all happened so fast - too fast for Namazuo to properly comprehend. If only… If only he tried harder in convincing his saniwa to not come with them to this memory… Why did you have to be so stubborn about protecting them when they should be the ones protecting you? Why did you have to be such a caring person who puts their lives above your own?
Spinning on his heels, Namazuo was only a millisecond too late to do anything as the enemy’s sword struck your body; the sound of metal piercing flesh was all he heard. Pupils dilating, his fingers curled around the grip of his wakizashi and he swiftly cut down the uchigatana that had just attacked his beloved master, causing it to dissipate into swirls of black dust. He panted, overwhelmed with a great deal of anger that he had never experienced until now.
“Aruji!”
Watching you fall from your horse, the wakizashi was quick to slide under you and cushioned your fall. He then shifted your position so that you were lying in between his thighs, with his left arm supporting your back. He grasped your gloved hand that was pressing down on your wound, gripping it tightly, desperately.
“Aruji, stay with me!” he cried, feeling his eyes burn with hot tears. Shallow breaths escaped your mouth as you stared into his purple hues through half-lidded eyes. This was your first time seeing him look so devastated, and it hurt you more than anything, especially since you knew that your pain will be over soon while he would carry his for as long as he’s alive. Namazuo did everything he could to stem your bleeding, but your sanguine essence kept dripping, staining the ground with red dots.
The wound is too deep for him to handle on his own.
“Yagen! Yagen, please help me!” he yelled. But he got no response, and that was when he remembered his brother had shattered into a myriad of silver shards during the bloody battle. All of the other touken danshi he was put in charge of had perished as well, leaving him and his saniwa as the only survivors.
“A-aruji…” he whispered, his eyelids fluttering shut, “I’m sorry… I failed to protect you…”
When the cheerful Toushirou arrived at the citadel as your first wakizashi, he wanted nothing more than to protect you and the warm smile you had graced him with. Your smile on that day was warm but it didn’t cause him pain like the searing flames that cruelly burnt his precious memories away.
You expelled a shuddering breath. Lifting your free hand from your side weakly, you touched his cheek and tenderly wiped his tears away with your thumb. You then smiled at him, though there was a hint of pain etched on your expression. “You did well, Namazuo-kun… I’m so proud of you. I should be the one saying sorry since I failed to prevent the other swords from breaking… and look, even you’re injured because of my incompetence.” You let out a soft chuckle, causing his eyes to snap open.
“This is not the time to be laughing! It doesn’t matter if we break because we can always be forged again from scratch!” he exclaimed as fresh tears cascaded down his cheeks, “But you're human, aruji! There is only one you in this entire world!”
Your eyes turned glossy with unshed tears, and you then clung onto his tattered uniform with a trembling hand.
“I-I’m sorry, but can you please stay with me for a while?” you implored in a small voice, “I’m kind of scared.”
Looking at his saniwa right now helped Namazuo realise how precious and transient human life is; how delicate and fragile their bodies are, and how beautiful they can be as well. Clenching his jaw, he immediately pulled you into a tight hug and savoured your warmth while you’re still grasping onto what little life is left inside your dying body.
Namazuo loves you more than anything. He thought that love can only bring happiness, but he now knows that it can also bring the greatest pain.
The risk of love is loss, and the price of loss is grief.
Once your breaths have ceased, your hand fell from his cheek, and the wakizashi knew that his dear master had finally passed. However, your body wasn’t cold - not yet. You’re still warm, as if his wish for you to remain by his side forever was strong enough to keep the warmth he loved so much tied to your body. But he knew that it was only a matter of time before you unite with the earth, just like your blood that was seeping into the ground beneath him.
“(Y/n)…” Your name slipped past his lips for the first time. His purple eyes that were once full of life suddenly dulled. His tears continued to roll down his cheeks in rivulets as he wept for the loss of his loved one. He then laid your lifeless body down gently before noticing a certain red flower blooming beside your head, tempting him to take it.
He knew exactly what it was.
‘Aruji is no longer here with me…’
Namazuo slowly accepted the red spider lily, allowing the alluring yet deadly flower to corrupt his spirit and stain his wakizashi jet-black.
‘... So it’s alright if I change history to bring them back, yeah?’

I already xeeted this on xitter but then I realized it'd be easier to compile and tag it for later ref here so 🤷 musing on Falcon and Stewart's relationship with their names and how others refer to them here:
Normally I'd say going from writing TKRB fic to writing FZ fic would be funny because of the many JP honorifics in TKRB and the lack of them in FZ (EN). But I feel some of that name choice conveying relationships in writing Falcon and Stewart because both use their surname. In the case of game Falcon he doesn't even have a proper canonical first name ("Douglas" being dubiously canon) and exclusively uses his surname. So allowing someone to know and call him by his given name is a huge display of trust+intimacy.
Rob is this to a lesser degree bc everyone knows his first name most just use his title or sometimes surname or a combination. But I still feel like people calling him Robert (or any diminutive) is also a show of intimacy if not on the extreme degree of Falcon's case. I like to use the names they refer to each other as as a way to show the development in their relationship (whether friendship or romance). I always have to double check when I swap points of view in fic with them because I'll often accidentally write Robert when switching from his to Falcon's POV and be like no they are not at that stage yet calm down...Falcon however is usually "Falcon" even in his own POV because that's how I think he conceptualises his own identity lol. It's only when he reveals his usually-disused first name to Rob that he begins to think of himself as that person as well again (can you tell I also have a complicated relationship with names lol).
Andy Falcon is even more of a complicated relationship with names bc of the many identities, which I often dig into in fics with him lol. It's fun to explore through writing how he refers to himself and how others refer to him as Andy/Bart/Falcon/etc. depending on the context, plus his different dynamic with anime Stewart re: being old friends and already having intimacy, imagining if they may already refer to each other by first name or if Andy tried to be proper when he was still a baby cadet despite Rob's efforts to be more familiar and it stuck all the way until they met again and/or got together.
As for anime (and game) Stewart, for both of them I think going by the surname is a point of pride because of the connection to his father. And of course the title is what he is, a doctor who worked hard to achieve that title. So allowing someone to call him Robert is a gesture like "I can just be me with you", just like Falcon allowing usage of his first name over "Captain" or "Falcon" is a signal that he doesn't have to put on a performance and can just be a self that may be "lesser" than the image he tries to project but is one that authentically, completely trusts the other.

kiden!! act ii
LETS GO THIS IS MY MOST FAVOURITE SCENE IN THE HISTORY OF TKRB EVER
genuinely fully in love with the idea of kasen narrating events like theyre a story. because thats such a rare glimpse of his vulnerability. and.......this is the first time we see him open up about his past and describe what really made him who he is, apart from the sanjuurokkasen incident.
he’s so full of love isn’t he? burdenless, still innocent, pure happiness. what we’re being shown is his time as a tsukumogami, several decades before tadaoki baptized kasen in blood. but as of now, where gracia is singing her child to sleep, kasen’s heart is, dare i say, the purest it’s ever been, because the tragedy comes in way later. it almost hurts to see what kasen used to be in the past.
(ofc the part of him being a tsukumogami at this point is just speculation and how i choose to interpret it)
oh yougknow i cried. i cried so hard when the camera switched to him mouthing the lullaby and tapping his finger on his sword to the rhythm. how many times had he heard that song before? he’s got it completely memorized . its about the tenderness its about the fondness its about the soft feelings . he’s had all these stories stored away in him with no one to tell them to and its so sad. its so so sad.
the way kasen adds his own little interjections in their conversations even though they cant hear him? love
nodding his head as his parents (thats what they are, arent they?) happily discuss their child’s future. this is the happiest scene in the entirety of kiden.
whenever kasen switches to narrating again he’s the present kasen, more somber, pained. it gives me whiplash.
i’ll mention it here for the sake of perspective: in the first scene, tama and tadaoki were 17 years old, and that baby was the future hosokawa tadataka. the honnouji incident would happen in 1582, when they were both just 19 years old (holy shit thats nearly how old im gonna be.............anyway). and kasen, at that point, was ofc a relatively young tsukumogami, having been forged in 1505.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
he looks at his hand like he’s surprised it moved on its own.........
i find it so infinitely profound that it’s kasen himself who gives gracia that name. ‘the grace/blessing of god’
tadaoki’s terrible temper and jealousy were the real cracks in their relationship werent they.
FUCK FUCK FUCK EVERYTIME KASEN TURNS AWAY FROM THE VIOLENCE I CANT HELP DOING THE SAME. its such a human thing to turn away from something so morally terrible and kasen cant bear watching it. if he turned away from just this one murder, imagine how he mustve felt when tadaoki used him to end 36 innocent lives at once. its one thing to kill that many people in battle, because obviously the purpose of a sword is to be a weapon of war, but quite another to be used to end innocent lives as a means to set a mere example. kasen’s first kills ever broke the samurai code. no wonder he says the others dont know what kind of face to make around him.
there it is. she calls tadaoki a demon. an oni.
when you grow up in distrustful, toxic environment like that you learn to shut yourself up because you dont feel safe in it anymore and internalize it all as a method of coping, and thats exactly what happened to kasen. as the scenes go on and on he talks to them less (+ the fact that one by one, most of the hosokawa swords left the family, and kasen was left mostly alone for the next centuries, but i digress) the sanjuurokkasen incident just solidified that permanently . and as we’ve seen in the past sutes, that + tadaoki’s temperament affects the way he interacts with others, most notably ookurikara. and him absolutely coddling sayo, keeping him to himself, not letting him mingle with the Date swords.
The cherry on top of this scene is how kasen comes forward, saying the same lines from giden, ‘a bloodstained kimono isn’t elegant…not elegant at all’ while looking at his right sleeve, paralleling gracia’s own bloodstained right sleeve. He’s horrified, but at the same time, looks at it with resignation. The pure, untainted kasen of the past is………..no more. Love is pain, is the lesson tadaoki carved into him.
the sword tadaoki used for stabbing the gardener wasnt kasen. its obvious that kasen identifies himself with gracia, as a horrified witness, a victim even. him looking at his sleeve and being dyed red as well is proof of that.
on the other hand, if we discount the tsukumogami theory, it becomes like this: kasen is reliving the story inside him, right from the beginning of their marriage, and somewhere deep, deep inside, he’s still capable of being as kind and tender as we saw. full of love and trust. he’s just built so many walls around himself that it doesnt come out as open display after all.
im not sure which interpretation hurts more.
The next scene is like a bandaid over a gunshot wound lol
>Nikkari and kotegiri look at each other like ‘ah, there he is, let's do our thing’
I really like how the two wakizashi (sasuga wakizashi, always there to support you <3) have their own unique ways of comforting kasen. nikkari offers to have a bath together, an indirect way of offering concern, while kotegiri straight out asks him what happened. Im . you can see the concern they have for him, to approach him like that. im so glad kasen has friends that notice and look after him (<- sounding like a parent)
I know kasen says theyre not his memories but rather tadaoki’s story inside of him, but, in essence….arent they the same? Everything kasen narrated felt like his own experiences, the story he lived through, and the will he inherited.
>nikkari kneeling next to a lantern is such subtle nod to his story
awwwww its so cute how nikkari and kasen explain the battle tactics to kotegiri, he feels like their little brother wwww i love these three
kasen is right to be concerned about chougi taking kokin out for a ‘stroll’
I love how nikkari is honest without being overbearing thats literally  what kasen needs and i will scream about it from the rooftops. I really really like him so much and I hope hes involved in future plays as well  Please god  !
oh he’s so perceptive. literally leaves kasen, the poet, speechless. nikkari is amazing.
Kotegiri is so ????????? considerate?????????????????? he didnt want kasen to meet tadaoki in that state bc he thought he’d be disillusioned??!?!!?! im. thats so fucking sweet of kotegiri. to think of sparing kasen more pain. urhgrhghdghdfjnjdknfjdn going to cry wait. (kasen gives him a little smile at this. ueeeeueeueueeeee)
'utsukushisa wa, tokaku hito wo kuruwaseru' is such an abstract, raw, line. what the fuck kasen. it reminds me of this one paradigm i came across: beauty is terror. and what could be more terrifying and beautiful, to souls like the greeks or our own, than to lose control completely? its important to note kasen says beauty (美しさ), and not love.
kasen's implicitly wondering if tadaoki's madness came from his perfect, married bliss. you could actually write an entire thesis paper on this scene alone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
btw just a thought but i think these screencaps should be framed and hung up at the Louvr–*gunshots* im totally biased when i say he's the most beautiful character in touken ranbu. in all its adaptations. forever and ever. ok just had to get that out lets continue.
im counting this little uta-gumi-interaction as the canon altered one after his kiwame. our kasen knows kotegiri well enough, and accepts the other forms of ‘uta’ that the other honmaru’s kasen couldnt. bless sute for drawing from original game content and somehow coming up w an even better interaction. viva la moonwalk !!!!!!!!!!!!!
(yay lets go on to the next scene while im still reeling about the hosokawa family!)
chougi hiding the fact that he's an inspector is an intentional plot point isnt it. i think he's going to be a central character in piecing together all the hints and clues from all the altered timelines to solve the Great Mikazuki Mystery. thats why he asked for the other honmaru's report from kasen at the end of kahakugeki.
oh my god that means no one recognized even his voice? i mean he was disguised and had a mask and everything in jurakutei's investigation so understandably they wouldnt know what he looked like, but his voice, surely???? i think manba will come back and surely surprise us with the fact that he knows. im counting on that.
kokin is SO perplexed and his face screams ??????? but he's being so nice about it. to be fair it WAS chougi that derailed their conversation anyway so kokin's justified .
man. kokin-sama is so beautiful. tsukaryo is so beautiful.
i like this chougi way more. the guy from the other honmaru in kahakugeki was more...stoic and brutal, suggesting theyd kill jizou if it came to that. but our chougi (<3) doesnt comment further on kokin's wish, just apologizes for suspecting him.
>kokin's senses r apparently sharper than chougi's bc he picked up on kikkou and shishiou eavesdropping on them
I LAUGHED THEYRE SO ADORABLEEEEE
here! chougi's interest is peaked as soon as shishiou mentions the troublesome bunkyu tosa-han inv. it must be this that sets chougi's sirens off, along w kuroda kanbei.
yeah, theyre not humans but stories.....fictionalised, romanticized accounts from unreliable memories, all mixed up and messy.
seifu.......
just occurred to me that once they got back to their inn (?) they mustve found kasen nikkari kote relaxing in the bath jdsnjsdnvkjnjkzsn. chougi, to kokin kikkou shishiou: saa, guzuguzu suru na! *finds the wakizashi and their captain in the ofuro after a traumatic event*
why make promises no one can ever hope to keep......😭😭😭😭
the way this timeline operates is completely different from the one in tosa worked. its actually terrifying how connected it is to gracia's will. like its completely living. (imagine if the city in this one started moving randomly tho. they wouldve never gotten out the dark passage). while ryouma is the last person to transform into his.....alternate form, gracia is the first, and only when she has transformed do all the other daimyo also transform
yea i lost count of how many times theyve said chichi naru deus rip. (would their god really wish for such a thing to happen to the natural world though? such an ...... unworldly thing. just saying . if i was a christian i wouldve immediately known the history revisionists were the devil's minions. but then again i cant imagine how terrible it mutsve been for them as a religious minority to be persecuted and hiding their entire lives in fear of death. they wanted to live. its different from the bunkyu-tosa humans where they wished for the future of the country as a whole. here, the christians make their own country for their own benefit.)
i love how everyone’s instantaneous reaction to being surrounded by enemies is to gather around kasen in position.
i remember being tired out in the second half of kahakugeki bc there were a lot of fights but they werent fights with real actors. kiden fortunately doesnt bore me because all the swordfights are so much cooler, and with real enemies too :)
i was just thinking 'wouldnt it be too crowded to fight so many people in such a narrow tunnel?' and then kikkou and nikkari literally save the day by chipping in!
i love the fact that sute emphasizes the 'aoe' instead of nikkari. i think kotegiri is the only one who calls him 'nikkari-san', everyone else calls him by his smith name, creating this sense of formal distance.
'bokutachi wa kigai sou da na' in many ways, aoe and kikkou are the same; werent they both shortened? aren't they both a little strange?
KURAGIRI TSUURO MY BELOVED
the way kokin says he found something is so funny like. they mustve been groping around in the dark for some kind of clue as to where theyre going and kokin just finds something that very coincidentally happens to be just what they need and kote and shishiou r like OHHHHH. and then they start dancing. i was surprised but i loved it. esp the lighting.......the overhead dark blue complementing their lanterns’ orange glow was a palette artists (me) would go crazy over . kasen looks beautiful btw.
🤡🤡🤡 besties how could you get lost you were LITERALLY DANCING TOGETHER A SECOND EARLIER.
noooo jizou dont run awayysydyfhdsajsf youre hurting kokinnnn
HOW is jizou stronger than kokin despite being there for the same amount of time. but its true that kokins bad at fighting (said so himself) and has been in lesser fights than jizou has been in. so.
what a pair they make. a traitor’s daughter and a traitor touken danshi.
i like this interpretation of the game’s lantern mechanics.
badass gracia badass gracia BADASS GRACIA BADASS GRACIA. tousute women are such strong characters but they come at a heavy mental cost tho
in kahakugeki jizou literally screamed kokin’s name like he hated him, but in kiden our jizou sounds apologetic, and seconds later he does apologize.....;-;
actually they do it twice dont they. at first its ‘jizou yukihira!’ ‘kokindenjunotachi!’ but when theyre leaving its ‘jizou...’ ‘kokin...’ softer
if kasen said 無粋 な 真似は やめて もら お う か to my face i’d kill myself
they still have their lanterns in hand and its insane to think about how all this is happening under a castle in a narrow dark passage where they can possibly hear each other’s fights and yells and basically th entirety of the characters r fighting in the kuragari tsuuro. like all 19 of them + the TRA. it mustve been chaotic
ARIMA HARUNOBU AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
his existential crisis strikes me the most....in reality he was ordered by hideyoshi to commit seppuku BUT since suicide is a sin in christianity, he requested to be executed. his wife reportedly kissed his severed head after his execution.
but this harunobu doesnt know how he died because hes a mix of reality and rumours and. its painful not to know who you are
pls sute can we have kotegiri dancing with kikkou shishiou and nikkari some time in the future pleaseeeeeee. you already mentioned in muden that they do but i also wanna see it
second time kasen says ‘katsute no aruji ga aishita’
chougi chougi CHOUGI BELOVED
i had to wipe a tear bc chougi and kasen fighting together so in sync was too beautiful. you dont get that type of synchronicity at random. they mustve practiced a lot at the honmaru.
a moment to reflect on how killing even these fake humans is painful
and of fuckng course nikkari would be concerned about where their souls would go ...... if they would even be counted as souls
‘do not pity the enemy you cut’            ........
FUCK kote had a nosebleed accident
the absolute sarcasm in chougi’s voice when he asks kokin if this is the Time to be reciting poetry. bestie let him be, poetry is his coping mechanism.
‘have you forgotten the poem?’ implying kasen has recited it to him in the past ok ok ok
very interesting how kasen addresses everyone else by either ‘kimi’ or ‘kiden’ but kokin by ‘anata’ but in his kiwame it remains ‘kimi’. this may mean nothing at all. or it may mean everything.
kasen......the kindness kasen knows is different. its brutal. it has an undercurrent of violence to it. he’s actually ready to cut down jizou for this mission, even says so in a later scene, telling him to defend gracia with his life. with kasen it’s always extremes.
yeah, and kokin does struggle with too much kindness
LETS GO LETS GO KASEN KANESADA NO UTA O
she calls kasen ‘ano hito’.......like he’s a person. actually he is, since he carries tadaoki’s heart, which ties in to gracia calling him a demonic husband. a demonic person’s sword will also be a demon. or the devil himself.
oh boy shinken hissatsu sequences!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
im so happy they had ALL of them battered bc in iden only tosa-gumi were hissatsu’d and it was kind of disappointing (<- she wanted to see izuminokami’s awakening)
YESSSSSSSSSSSS kikkous inner.........restraints!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! sute did that. sute REALLY DID that
KOTEGIRI . he’s so fierce
you can really hear the italian/spanish (sorry idk what that instrument is but its def european!) influences. manzo did say they put a lot of effort into adding christian influences into the soundtrack . and by god did they succeed.
BUT THE BIGGEST SURPRISE WAS NUE WHAT THE FUCK NUE I KNEW YOU WERE ALIVE BUT SUTE MADE YOU EVEN MORE ALIVE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I LOVE IT HES BITING THEM shishiou has abs KILL KILL KILL BITE KICK ASS YEAHHHHH THEYRE SO COOL
im just going to say it: nikkari is sexy as fuck. just the right amount of exposed skin. cursed red eye free from hair curtain. unhinged laugh. sensual action sequences. disheveled hair moving like water. my image of pure soft mashiro is shattered by those abs. and perfect bgm btw it feels like im ascending
chougi walks onto the battlefield like god sent him. like he’s the hecking reincarnation of death. which he is. (umechan’s growling is spot on.)
oh this silence after chougi leaves.  i know whats going to happen but it still makes my hair stand on end. here we go
FUCK
FUCK FUCK FUCK
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK
FUCKING HELL
that opera wants me dead.
kasen emerging like he’s a statue made from marble, looking like that??? all ruffled up???? the shadow of anger on his face? with THOSE muscles? i think its my bias speaking. but that exposed shoulder is the single most sexual thing ive ever seen. i mean that in the most respectful way possible. and wadakuma has literally bulked up for this so his hissatsu in hiden pales in comparison to this.............
and his voice comes out like its being dragged out from him. like he can barely get the words out due to anger. he’s super fucking mad
THIS. this is the most spirited fight he’s ever had. its so obvious he’s on a completely different level from his teammates (he’s lv99 isnt he) with the way he’s slicing and controlling an entire crowd . he’s grown so strong....................... 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
i forgot to breathe
how does kasen still look like the most beautiful being in the universe despite being injured.
just like gracia, kasen feels the pull of fate trying to bring them to each other. there is literally no other explanation. their stories are just that strongly connected to each other.
he’s being honest for a second and admitting he had doubts. also the third time he says ‘katsute no aruji ga aishita’ like its drilled into him.
taken aback by being called an oni......maybe he thought gracia hated him, was looking at him with the same hatred she felt for tadaoki
kokin isnt supposed to cry please nooooooooooooooo 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 we all wish honnouji hadnt happened but seeing kokin finally lose his composureeeeeeeeee
otomo sourin is..........undeniably one of the most sincerest christians in this. he wanted to genuinely let all the christians born there live their lives, but in the end, this place he thought would be better became engulfed in the same ‘blood and war’ he wanted to escape from. its so heartening to see the touken danshi respond to him with that same sincerity. ‘we’ll certainly carve it into our chest’
here lies jesus betrayed by most of his disciples. the last supper lived up to its name
‘the presence i feel from you is one im very familiar with.’ is a strong (and the first) confirmation of the fact that chougi and manba are directly Connected to each other. fused and attuned to each other. i mean chougi hadnt even met manba for very long, with the latter leaving for his kiwame journey on the same day that chougi arrived. because no one other than chougi himself seems to feel that kuroda kanbei is.......different from the others. in any case, we can safely conclude that a piece of manba is lodged in chougi, just like a piece of chougi is lodged in manba. theyre the same but different, destined to have this indivisable connection.
in the same vein, i wonder if those from the same smith schools also feel the presence of their fellow crafted swords? perhaps those who’ve spent a long time together? or replicas and originals? would kasen be able to uniquely perceive izumi? would horikawa and yamabushi too, like chougi, be able to discern manba’s presence from a sea of swords? its an interesting idea with countless possibilities, so i’ll wager yes.
(chougi senses manba, kasen senses gracia, their connections run parallel)
kokin’s first human kill is ukon. its a shame the camera didnt switch to a closeup of kokin bc right after he stabs him, kokin strokes his sword and looks at his hand....
im not completely sure about this, but kasen is fearful, or at least very wary, of ukon. in kahakugeki when ukon yelled at him in his altered form, kasen flinched terribly. and now, when ukon is requesting kasen for something, kasen is suddenly on his guard, eyes widening. honestly idk why? maybe he thought he’d transform into something else? scared of what ukon might say??
about the bell tolling after ukon dies: its a death knell. ‘the ringing of a church bell immediately after a death to announce it.’ also symbolizes the end of something, or something that will end soon. in this context, the last of the christians has fallen. harunobu, sumitada, yukinaga, sourin, ukon, and then the tensho embassy. kuroda kanbei has essentially deserted them, and now only gracia remains. (when i typed this out i realized how bleak that sounds)
their roles were brief but.......the tensho boys did leave their mark behind. and their last words were haunting. and otomo sourin’s last few words as well.......
(i think nikkari may be subtly suggesting they all were spirits?)
‘surely someone somewhere within this sky is watching over you. kotegiriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii im going to shake you so hard
FUCK THEY SHOW KIKKOU NIKKARI SHISHIOU KOTE LOOKING ABSOLUTELY REMORSEFUL AND STUNNED WTFFFFFFFF
i mean i know thats manba, in some fucked up way, but i cant help not feeling attached to him (it?). and he is definitely acting on his own will, even fighting against the tra whenever it suits his own purposes, but its simply not our manba. theres this theory that that’s what manba is reduced to after his kiwame training goes wrong or something but i dont buy that. our manba is strong enough. he wouldnt be reduced to a time-hopping masterless sword like that.
this time chougi wins. you know how stupendous that is? just in his last appearance on stage, chougi had his ass handed to him in front of everyone by manba. now he fucking breaks manba’s fake with his own two hands. fucked up but also amazing narrative.
and he’s SO hell bent on protecting manba’s legacy. He’s so mad on manba’s behalf. AND HE DOESNT CALL OUR MANBA NISEMONOKUN HE CALLS HIM YAMANBAGIRI KUNIHIROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DELICIOUS DELICIOUS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
‘yamanbagiri kunihiro. until you come home, i’ll protect this honmaru’ FUCKED ME UPPPPPPPPP he’s one of them now he’s one of them he has companions and he’s become less prickly than he used to be he’s HE’S BECOME A SUTE SWORD!!!!!!!!! that loss and uguisumaru’s lecture mustve made him introspect what his ideals and attitude entailed for the first time . that scene at the end of jiden where he’s standing at the top looking at everyone go about their daily chores? that was the start of his turning point. he realized he still had so much to learn about this honmaru before signing it off as merely pitiful. they tamed him <3
it all ties back to fucking oda nobunaga at the end im going to tear my hair out
pain pain all i know is pain . all kasen and jizou and kokin know is pain
be ready to protect her with your life because kasen knew a man who couldnt and regretted it till his dying day . he’s literally threatening to kill jizou i havent seen a sword wanting to destroy another ever since hiden. the hosokawa swords r fucked up
organs in the bgm are taken directly from the game ost
when gracia makes the slightest movement kasen and kokin r immediately on their guards . cryyyyyyyyyyying
um UM???? KAI-CHAN’S LINE DELIVERY????????????????????
‘anata wa inferno ni itte naranai. jizou bosatsu no michibiku ni shitegainasai. mada modoreru.’ english cant do these words justice. she’s choosing to give jizou up bc not only are they not supposed to be together, and she wants jizou to follow his own path rather than force himself to follow hers, which would be an irreedemable sin in both their faiths.
there we go. she cut their connection.
THE WAY kasen puts himself between jizou and graciadknsdkjnesjknfnsfkjnfkjneakfnueihnivasndkvwniugniufvnsfdjkanvuancuiasnkjcdsnvjkarnuesnkfjfnskdjvniuafnjesniuwenifunewanfiuwnfiu keysmashing isnt enough i need to jump on my keyboard
he tells kokin to take care of jizou not because kokin needed to be told or ordered to do so, but rather because kasen needs confirmation they’ll be safe and okay till he comes back. bc despite threatening jizou, he cares. and this line isnt even in the game event btw.
i hate and love this part. hate it bc it makes me cry.
(puts on my tinfoil hat) ave maria as a choice is actually so interesting because:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
loved one's death I wonder who that could be djsdjdbcnsgshdodhdjfjdbdjdbfbd 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 KASEN’S BELOVED GRACIA OF FUCKING COURSE
note: ‘full of grace’ in latin is literally gratia plena (as in gracia, get it?)
of course, this bgm has drawn inspiration from the last boss bgm in the game’s keichou kumamoto event itself, so the ave maria bit comes in from there, but sute (full of absolutely insane people) have extended ave maria’s duration so that it perfectly lasts for the entirety of kasen’s and gracia’s fight.
oh btw this is the actual wall painting inside kumamoto castle’s honmaru goten!
Tumblr media
they changed the original painting to that of a couple which, 99.9%, is supposed to be gracia and tadaoki ;-; stabbed me in the heartdfghjk
Tumblr media
(side note: the game has this change as well, but only on the first time you defeat the last boss. all subequent times you defeat the boss, the wall retains its original form, implying history has been corrected)
and thats not all the significance this painting has!!!!!!!!!!! according to the official kumamoto castle website, the original painting depicts wang zhaojun, one of the famous ‘four beauties’ of china. you can read a more comprehensive version of her story here, but the most important thing is that she, too, despite being hailed as virtuous and intelligent, was denied her rights to return home because of men in power, and died by suicide. like gracia, she also was a symbolic political figure (whereas wang zhaojun is said to represent the ties between the han dynasty and the mongolians, gracia’s death served to drive tadaoki to ieyasu’s side and arguably aided in winning sekigahara). what kind of coincidence is that.
theres a moment where he simply gazes at her. i cant emphasize how much him just looking at her means so much.
its like kasens body moves on its own but his mind is still clouded and the reality and hasnt caught up with the reality of what he is about to do.
for those two seconds she was saying nikukute nikukute nikukute, kasen must’ve thought she was talking about him, but then she adds that very soft ‘itoshii’ and his eyes cant go wide enough, like he’s woken for the first time, realizing the severity of the kill. ill never forget that face.
and tama sinks to her knees, fallen, just like she did when begging tadaoki to kill her.....time is a flat circle
my eyes popped out when tadaoki appeared like he was some kind of angel sent by the heavens. or some kind of ghost.
theres nothing but love theres nothing but pure love in his eyes as he looks at gracia.
i once read somewhere that home is the first place you learn to run from. kasen’s been trying to outrun a lot of his past but this scene is like coming back home after a long time out in the rain. his parents finally notice him and are proud of him, for being as he is, painful stories and all. i cant stop looking and choking up at his bewildered face when tadaoki says those words. genuinely. this was his divine salvation, the first time we ever see him cry.
unlike cain and abel, kokin is his brother’s keeper. he nearly lost him once and he’s not letting him go ever again.
‘jizou yukihira [...] i will pray for your flower to bloom....’ says gracia as she disappears..............a play on the title. you knwo what that means? it means gracia has transferred the title of flower over to jizou. (kasen later also reaffirms this, saying ‘it is not the time for you to scatter yet’ to jizou when he asks kasen to kill him. wait now that i typed it out thats so dark)
isnt it quite ironic that he chases them after they’ve disappeared and gone? there’s a limit to how much a heart can restrict itself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(the arm which kahakugeki kasen and kiden kasen wipe tama’s blood on r different. in kiden, he does it to his right forearm, which takes me back to the time he was looking at his own sleeve after tadaoki bloodied tama’s sleeve. that right forearm is like a sort of landmark for emotional pain. red blood on a blue kimono makes purple.....)
the first time he ever offers a smile to kokin and i break down. i
to some swords their master’s feelings come easily enough, and everyone else recognizes them (like mutsu in iden) but kasen and jizou, because they were part of a cosmically complex story about something that to most swords is indecipherable (love) they dont know how to understand or know sansai-sama and tama-sama’s heart.
‘what are you thinking of right now? what am i thinking of right now?’
there’s so much of kasen in this dialogue. and. i dont have any words left. like kasen said it isnt something to be described by such everyday, ordinary words. but what remains is that even if he thinks he’s far away from being elegant, he hasn’t lost his poetic spirit in all this violence. that integrity, he has kept.
compared to kahakugeki, his voice is less brash and abrasive when telling jizou to stand. these small differences actually make a whole world of difference.
the absolute look of heartbreak jizou gives him
and its almost imperceptible, but kasen nods at him. and im not 100% sure but he offers him a small smile as well.
there it is. the amatsukaze. the heavenly wind that with it hopefully took away with it the souls of those that died. (since the wind is representative of kokin it feels like he’s wrapping up the events of this investigation, bringing it all to an end.) (i read a repo by someone that wondered if what kasen glimpsed at those last moments was actually paraiso, heaven, and thats why he was so shocked. its left up to our interpretation)
these lines of dialogue feel like kasen wrote them down in his own diary. in kahakugeki this was the exact dialogue given to the kodanshi. i wonder if kasen simply handed the script he made to him so he could tell a story from it.
‘the year after gracia’s death, the christianity ban wasn’t lifted, but tadaoki established a church. at the mass, it was said he lamented gracia. even now, tadaoki’s and gracia’s two graves, lie side by side in the hosokawa clan’s cemetary.’
kokin’s incoming call, again, is: 来ぬ人を 待つ夕暮れの秋風は いかに吹けばかわびしかるらむ [What is the nature / of the autumn wind’s blowing / that it brings such grief / when in the dusk I await / someone who fails to appear? (from the tkrb wiki)
summarises all the longing and pain wholly.
also, its coincidental he mentioned  秋 here because the kikyou flower, symbol of the akechi clan, is one of japan’s ‘seven flowers of autumn’. despite all the association kiden and kasen have with spring (new creation, blossoming ideas etc) the seasonal and character developmental journey has left us at autumn, with kasen coming back to us with a kikyou replacing his peony.
i suppose some would call it sute wanting to quickly end kasen’s character arc, but him departing for his kiwame journey goes to show how frantic and eager he was to really achieve his full potential. and you know what? fucking good for him. he deserves it. i was fully happy with it. more than happy in fact. ecstatic.
but also, its funny how he left right before the incoming call came in again. i mean surely he didnt know when exactly it’d come right? in the game, kokin literally says ‘to wait or to keep one waiting, im not very good at that’ and kasen, absolute mad lad, does exactly that omg.
apparently, only kikkou and nikkari knew of kasen leaving.
nikkari’s smileeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. he’s happy for kasen.!!!!!!!!!!!

KASEN MAKES THE SAME POSE AS THE TIME HE EMERGED IN HIS SHINKEN HISSATSUUUUU
Tumblr media
as far as i’m concerned, this is what divinity looks like in mortal form . i could wax poetic about the composition of this scene, his costume, which solidified completely my love for his kiwame, the little butterfly accessories, wadakuma’s constant dimple..... (i say this very calmly for a person who went into hysterics for the rest of the day after seeing it live. all that emotion nearly made me throw up. im so so so so so, so proud of him.) i don’t think i’ll ever stop getting goosebumps from his shinken hissatsu and kiwame. even though i’d been spoiled since the start of april i cant believe that it really happened. kuma’s triumphant smile right as he struck all the tra at once.....i wonder how it mustve felt like. being so powerful, the centre of this story, and that being the last performance too.....man hold on i need to cry
The first words he says to us, after returning, are  literally tadaoki's death poem (despite his nonchalance about  sansai-sama's death in his kiwame letters, it must've hung heavy on  him):  皆共が忠義 戦場が恋しきぞ いづれも稀な者どもぞ (sorry idk how to translate this without  it sounding incomplete but the gist of it is that he misses the battlefield,  and all the rare people that left him) . and kasen adds in his own  little line as well: やがて 僕たちもそうな るのだろうか?でもその時までは. will we eventually become thus as well? but, until then...
(kasen’s understood and seen mortality right in its closest proximity. he’s contemplating the possibility of them one day becoming nothing.....having to leave the battlefield for good. which ties into something ive been wondering as well: when they finally defeat the tra, save mikazuki etc, when there wont be any enemy left, what would their purpose be? kasen’s answer is simply, we won’t know until we reach that point. until then, they will keep fighting. that is all.)
kasen left reciting gracias death poem and came back to us with tadaoki's death poem on his tongue.
its like he’s casting off who he used to be and, like a butterfly, has reinvented himself by letting his old self go. I'm not a christian, and haven't witnessed any christian rituals, so I say this with secondhand knowledge only: kasen's kiwame reveal felt  like a Baptism. an interesting commentary on one of the bible passages comes to mind: "O merciful God, grant that the old Adam in this child may be so buried, that the new man may be raised up in him." what is metamorphosis if not a temporary death? he buried the old tadaoki in him. i mean buried as in come to terms with. he’s no longer fighting and struggling against him. acceptance, like kasen mentions seeking in his kiwame letters, becomes him.
i can’t get over how in the curtain call bows, wadakuma cant stop looking and smiling at the audience. you cen literally feel his happiness radiating everywhere. no more crying like in kahakugeki’s daisenshuuraku, they made it out the dark tunnel. just. god. im so full of emotions whenevr kiden is brought up. kuma loves kasen so much.
im glad suemitsu-san spent so much effort on making kiden as faithful and true and sensitive to everyone’s characters. im so so glad that we got two keichou kumamoto adaptations. im terribly happy that they could tell us the story of our sute honmaru’s investigation, without compromising a single thing. i’ll carry this happiness within me for a long, long time, even if i wasn’t there in person. if anyone has managed to get done reading both of my silly posts and made it till here, i hope you’ve felt the same gratitude and bewilderment and all the various mixture of emotions kiden threw at us. kasen is my favourite character, and i hope this beautiful tale has left a mark on everyone who saw it, just like kuma said.
