Sun Wukong: Goodnight moon.
Sun Wukong: Goodnight tree.
Sun Wukong: Goodnight ghosts that only I can see.
Tripitaka: "What?"
Wukong, pulling out the staff: "Don't worry about it."

Journey to the West - Moonlight Treasure Box (2020) 大话西游之一月光宝盒
Tumblr media
Type: Animation Country/Region of Production: Mainland China Language: Mandarin Chinese Type: Reimanging
Summary:
The blockbuster success of "The Return of the Great Sage" has allowed Chinese people to see new hope in domestic animated films, and also see the huge repeated development value of the IP "Journey to the West". In addition to private film companies investing in the animation industry, state-owned units are also unwilling to be left alone. After re-screening Stephen Chow's two classic works "Westward Journey: The Moonlight Box" and "Westward Journey: The Marriage of the Monkey King", as the mainland copyright owner of the films The Western Film Group is planning to make these two films into animated films. In the recent registration and approval of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, two animated films, "Westward Journey: One Moon Light Treasure Box" and "Westward Journey: The Marriage of the Monkey King", have been confirmed to be approved. Judging from the synopsis of the story, it is basically consistent with the plot of the live-action movie. It seems difficult not to speculate that it is a money-making move to capitalize on the popularity of the Westward Journey animation.

I made an extremely messy and rough little jttw pmv a few days ago bc the Wukong-Tripitaka brainrot absolutely got to me lol!! Wasn't planning on posting it but I thought I should treat ya'll :P
(The song is Snow and Ice by Sophia Anne Caruso)
Explanation under cut:
I think a lot of people don't acknowledge the fact that the whole theme of jttw is growth and change. And I honestly I can go as far to say that the concept of healing (from your past) is a theme too. Wukong is such an excellently executed character in my opinion. When he achieves his goal it feels genuinely rewarding because you watched him EARN it throughout the story. You watched him do his best, you watched him learn, you watched him struggle. He's supposed to be a sort of "guardian angel" figure to Tripitaka; there to help him "lead the path". And as much as Wukong's a protector and guardian to Tripitaka - Tripitaka is equally that to Wukong. Their connection is so charming - they don't get along perfectly, they don't agree on everything. Despite that I still like to imagine that Tripitaka still holds such hope for Wukong, even if he doesn't always outright show it. That despite everything Wukong will still be able to change - and he does. He isn't a creature of evil - just human pleasure and the human mindset that he gained when stepping into "our world" corrupted him. What THEY did to you. And Tripitaka believes deep, deep down that Wukong is just broken - but everything that's broken CAN be fixed. Wukong can once again be a peaceful creature, responsible for his own choices and emotions and the emotions of others. His light will shine again.

Theirs a Xuan Zang movie from 2016 that is a bit more historically accurate, its on YouTube if you want to check it out
Anon thank you sincerely for letting me know that this movie exists! Of all the Xiyouji retellings I've encountered for free on Youtube this film is now definitely one of my favorites. It is a much more quiet and contemplative presentation of the westward journey than usual (I mean it is entirely focused on Xuanzang through a historical & religious lens rather than on fantastical yaoguai shenanigans asefeaedsf), but I feel like it serves as a pretty good reminder on why this monk chose to undertake such long and perilous journey at all.
In particular this movie gets bonus points from me for noting A)that the Tang emperor actually forbade Xuanzang from attempting the journey before welcoming him back with open arms after it was said and done, and B)making explicit just how much translation had to go into not just Xuanzang's travels and studies, but into making the Indian Buddhist scripture legible for a Chinese audience. I feel like this last point in particular is important, because it really serves as a remind both how difficult (and even dangerous!) it can be to translate a way of thinking from one culture to the next, but also how rewarding such efforts can be.
Anyone interested in this film can watch it for free here:

Thinking about that Zhihu AU where Tang Seng's disciples were Erlang Shen, Sun Wukong, and Bull Demon King instead.....
[ID: 1. An illustration of Erlang Shen, Sun Wukong, and Bull Demon King from the waist-up. Erlang Shen is wearing a weimao and a purple yuanlingpao archer-style with the left lapel flipped out. His two inner robe layers are checkered blue and purple-ish off-white. He has a snow leopard pelt at his waist. Sun Wukong is in his typical pilgrimage outfit, chewing on a piece of willow with his arms crossed. Bull Demon King has his arm around SWK's shoulder, leaning against him. He has a leopard pelt across his chest and a dark red scarf around his shoulders, with a red banbi and off-white inner robe. His other hand is on his mixed-iron rod, which is placed on his shoulder. 2. A translated screenshot from the aforementioned Zhihu thread. It reads "西天路走的太顺利畅,我反而无聊 This path to the Western Heaven is too smooth. I'm actually bored." End ID]

I'm glad! The 三打白骨精 and 真假美猴王 arcs and villains are very memorable to me, and it's fun to imagine how they would interact and what they would talk about if they were friends. :^)

Sun Wukong: You often use humor to deflect trauma
Tang Monk: Thank you
Sun Wukong: I didn't say that was a good thing
Tang Monk: What I'm hearing is, you think I'm funny
Wukong: "You are cracking jokes. There's clearly something wrong."
Tang: "What does that mean?!"
Wukong: "YOU DON'T HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR! TRAUMA HUMOR IS MY THING!"
