Just to tie in my two themes this month----

Additional notes, because poll options apparently limit their characters:

Frodo finds great peace in watching the tides rise and fall throughout each day. He attends all the ranger programs on birds and seashells and fills pages with sketches and poetry.

Sam meticulously selects postcards in the gift shop for each of his friends and spends a whole morning writing and addressing them. He also buys Junior Ranger hats for his kids and a variety of Appalachian jams for Rosie.

Park rangers launch a Missing Person search for Aragorn when they realize his car's been parked at Avalanche Creek for three days. The search runs for almost a week before he comes strolling out the opposite side of the park, supporting one of the SAR techs who twisted an ankle during the search.

Legolas is first drawn to Olympic for the towering, mossy temperate rainforests, but the ground goes out from under him when he steps onto Second Beach for the first time. He spends an entire day watching the light and tides shift on the sea stacks, and he leaves feeling both full and hollow, like a bell that's just been rung.

Mammoth is only Gimli's first stop on a cavern tour, followed by Jewel and Wind Caves and Carlsbad Caverns. Wind Cave is his favorite for the unusual formations. He makes an obnoxious tween boy cry in Carlsbad for breaking off a speleothem.

Boromir is on a tour of military parks. He asks so many questions to the intern working the info station at Fort Sumter the kid has to go find the park historian. His favorite site is Vicksburg because that place was buckwild, though he silently judges one of the reenactors for his clumsy handling of a black powder rifle.

Merry also makes stops in Jurassic and Dinosaur National Monuments. He watches every park video, takes selfies in front of all the fossil exhibits, and earns his Junior Ranger badge at each one. He buys a keychain for Pippin.

Pippin actually gets four citations, mostly for trying to stick his hands in mud pots. He doesn't mean anything by it---he's just so delighted and curious about the bizarre landscape. He winds up with several thermal burns and dumps a king's ransom in the donation box on his last day.

Gandalf gets dinged by rangers for not paying the $5 fee for Trunk Bay, but he acts senile until they eventually decide to drop it. He gets postcards from everyone and responds to none of them.

Faramir and Eowyn are traveling together and do many of the same hikes and rides, but they do have some different preferences off-trail. Eowyn drags Faramir to a rodeo and the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Jackson Hole, and he goads her into Ranger Shelton Johnson's living history programs on the Buffalo Soldiers in Yosemite.

Eomer is bike-packing on his sport cruiser motorcycle. He goes to Roosevelt south unit for the wild horse herds but ends up spending half a day watching a prairie dog town. He takes 400 photos of them, mostly blurry, and texts them to Eowyn.

Nirvana - Something In The Way (Live at the BBC): when listening through last month's album ranking, this performance caught me. something in the way is one of the more underrated tracks from nevermind (or at least it was before the new batman movie lol). truthfully there's nothing too out of the ordinary with this performance but i like how kurt's voice sounds on the chorus especially <3

Umphrey's McGee - National Loser Anthem: i LOVE mashups that are actually recorded by someone else instead of sticking the tracks together (both kinds are good but this type is underappreciated). this is the opener to this album and it introduces the mastercraft on display so well...

Papa Roach - Scars: i don't even have anything nice to say about this song other than that it's super catchy. i actually got it in my head bc i had been listening to the laura les remix lol

Europe - The Final Countdown: okay everyone SHUT UP. i know this is a fucking sports stadium anthem but i dont give a shit about that!! when i was 11 years old and only just starting to listen to music, this was one of the only songs i knew. everyone only knows the chorus (which is really good) but if you actually listen to the lyrics it's this heartwrenching power pop track about leaving earth and dealing with the complicated emotions that would come with that...... you wouldn't get it................

Luscious Jackson - Naked Eye: heard it on the radio. struck me as a very genre-bending band, with rock and hip hop and a bunch of other shit mixed in. cool stuff! apparently the drummer was the original drummer for the beastie boys?? crazy

Vanilla Ice - Hooked-Live/1991: i've been writing a ranking of all of vanilla's albums, which led me to relisten to some significant tracks. hooked was one of the stronger tracks from his debut album (the original release of which was even named after it) but it always fell a little short for me. the live version, on the other hand, has a lot more energy and hype

They Might Be Giants - Hide Away Folk Family: tmbg was one of the first bands i ever listened to (explains a lot tbh) but i only knew a little bit of their stuff from like the 90s and 00s, so i wanted to go back and check out some old school material. i liked this album a lot, and the chorus to HAFF stuck in my head big time

Jethro Tull - Aqualung: i've been getting into some more prog rock recently for no. particular... reason...... and i already kinda knew i would like this album. my dad had recommended "up to me" a while back, which i really liked, so i had high hopes. they were met! good fucking album! the title track is really only a standout bc of my love for opening tracks

ANGEL_TECH - whats up with u??: new angel_tech album out now!! once again, the opening track thing is big for me. i love an album that makes a good first impression. it was unfortunate that i couldn't make the release party but oh freaking well!

Huey Lewis & The News - I Want A New Drug: i think i've properly memed myself into enjoying huey lewis lmaooo i found sports in those old cassettes i mentioned i've been going through and was like "lol i should listen to this bc funney american psycho reference" and then an hour later i was adding a bunch of huey songs to my playlist...

Mind-Body Problem - Flesh and Blood (Ephesians 6:12): found this band through their hand crushed by a mallet cover, but honestly i think i might like this original track better. metalcore and hardcore and all that are severely lacking some fresh faces and new takes on the genre, so i'll be keeping an eye on what else this band has to offer!

August is Falling - August Is Falling: really great new ep from an absolute classic pop punk emo band. definitely not tied to any kind of internet inside joke bullshit. remember seeing them on warped tour

Girls Rituals - Idiot punk tetratogenic perma-decline (at the end of your bed): i've been enjoying all devi's new singles but this one's the one i keep coming back to. nothing much more to say it's just good tunes

Spin Doctors - Little Miss Can't Be Wrong: i've been just ever so slightly abnormal about these guys since the trainwreckords episode, but this one is not really that interesting? it's just a really good pop song 👍

Cry Baby - Singing For You: y2k throwback pop rock recommended by skatune network. i've become such a pop girlie and this one has a big catchy chorus. great stuff :)

AS HUSBANDS GO

1931

As Husbands Go is a three-act play by Rachel Crothers. It was originally produced by John Golden and staged by the author.

The play takes place at a café in Paris and the living-room in the Lingard House, ten miles from Dubuque, Iowa.

While in Paris, a widow from Iowa and her younger married neighbor, discover alluring gentlemen. The widow is attracted to an elderly boulevardier, while the neighbor is smitten with a handsome (and younger) English author. Instead of souvenirs, the ladies daringly bring the men back home to Iowa.

“If all husbands were as gallant as Charles Lingard in Rachel Crothers’ comedy... divorce courts could go out of business; that is, provided all wives were as delightfully tractable as pretty Lucile Lingard.” ~ BROOKLYN LIFE

For the world premiere, Golden chose Brandt’s Boulevard Theatre in Jackson Heights NY. It opened for a week’s stay on February 23, 1931.

The play premiered on Broadway at (fittingly) the John Golden Theatre on March 5, 1931. This was the first of three venues named for the producer. Located on 58th street, it stopped presenting live theatre in 1936 and was demolished in 1985. The third theatre named for Golden is now known as the Bernard Jacobs.

“If a smiling lady should be found dancing in the streets in Fifty-eighth Street, to be specific, with laurel and bay leaves in her hair, that would be Rachel Crothers. For the second time in three years she has taken advantage of John Golden's adventurous generosity and produced a hit in his name when he was no closer to it than Palm Beach, Florida. Ticket brokers, I'm told, are willing to buy all the seats the Golden office will sell for the next several weeks of ‘As Husband Go’, so sure are they that it is to be listed among the hits.”

Mantle is referring to the fact that Golden was seldom in Manhattan. In January 1931 he purchased the play from Havana, and was in Palm Beach when it finally opened.

On May 4, 1931 Gloria Holden replaced Lily Cahill as Lucile Lingard. Cahill left the role suddenly for undisclosed reasons. Golden heard Holden on radio and signed her to make her Broadway debut.

The show’s 100th performance (a matinee on May 23rd) coincided with a military air show, so Golden moved the curtain time to 3:15pm to prevent audiences being distracted by the roar of aircraft motors.

At the same time in Los Angeles, producer E.E. Clive had presented a West Coast company of As Husbands Go. Clive would also produce the Broadway revival in 1933.

In late June 1931, Golden invested in some new-fangled technology - air cooling! Perhaps theatres would now be able to operate year-round? Cool!

After Independence Day, the play started to advertise “last weeks” and closed on July 11th. Golden had agreed to the play becoming one of the Theatre Guild’s subscription series. This was a consortium of cities nationwide that would share the same plays. One of those cities was Atlantic City.

Coincidentally, Clive’s California company wrapped up its run on September 12th, just as the Theatre Guild tour was preparing to launch. The production was integral in selling the play to Hollywood.

After a summer break, the play re-opened in Atlantic City at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre on the Boardwalk on September 28, 1931.

A new production, under the guidance of producers O.E. Wee and Jules J. Leventhal in mid-January. Again, Crothers provided direction. Wee and Leventhal were known as “W & L: The Revivers” with six productions in a short period of time - all revivals. Simultaneously, the play had been sold to stock and regional producers, virtually flooding the nation with Husbands!

In January 1933, the play returned to Broadway at the Forrest Theatre, today known as the Eugene O’Neill. Remarkably, both the original Broadway production and the Broadway revival ran the same number of performances: 148.

In 1934, a film version was released. The screenplay was written by S.N. Behrman, Sonya Levien, and Fred Niblo Jr. and starred Warner Baxter as the titular Husband.

The film had its world premiere at the famous Steel Pier Theatre in Atlantic City on December 3, 1933, nearly two months before its general release in late January 1934.

Eric Aldwin Bellinger Jr. (born March 27, 1984) is a singer and songwriter. He began songwriting in 2010, and his co-writing credits include “Lemme See” by Usher, “New Flame” by Chris Brown, “You Don’t Know” by Tank, “Right Here” by Justin Bieber, and “Disrespectful” by Trey Songz. He won a Grammy in the category of Best R&B Album for his contribution to Chris Brown’s album F.A.M.E. He renewed focus on his recording career and released his debut album, The Rebirth in February of that year. He released two extended plays with 300 Entertainment, Eric B for President: Term 1in 2016, and Eric B for President: Term 2 in 2017.

He grew up in Los Angeles but attended schools in the Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs area, where he met his future manager Nieman Johnson. He is the grandson of Jackson 5 songwriter Bobby Day.

He had earned a football scholarship to USC but rejected the offer to record and tour with R&B group AKNU. He first co-wrote for pop acts such as Selena Gomez and the Scene, Jacob Latimore, and Big Time Rush. He contributed to the song “Death Penalty” on The Game’s mixtape California Republic. His connection with The Game led to him writing and featuring on several songs off The Game’s album The Documentary 2, for which he received greater recognition and signed a publishing deal with Sony ATV.

He released a three-part series of mixtapes: Born II Sing Vol. 1, Born II Sing Vol. 2, and Born II Sing Vol. 3. He released his debut studio album, The Rebirth as a double album. The Rebirth peaked at #23 on the US R&B/Hip Hop charts, and #15 on the US R&B chart, and entered the Heatseekers Albums chart.

In May 2022, he announced his publishing deal with Roc Nation. It was announced that he performs the theme song of the Sesame Street spinoff series Mecha Builders. His album “New Light” (2021) received a nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.

Whether it was Sheryl Lee Ralph’s historic Emmy win or KeKe Palmer’s epic pregnancy reveal, the best cultural moments from the last 12 months were (mostly) courtesy of Black women. Megan Thee Stallion

Megan Thee Stallion had quite the tumultuous year, but still came out on top. The star released her sophomore album, Traumazine, to critical acclaim. She also launched a website called Bad Bitches Have Bad Days Too, which provides diverse and free mental health resources. In addition, Meg hosted “Saturday Night Live” for the first time and delivered a heartfelt performance. 2022 also saw a guilty verdict in the Tory Lanez trial, where he was convicted of shooting the “Anxiety” rapper. Far too often, Black girls are forced to be stronger than they have to be. We remain in awe of Megan’s vulnerability and strength.

Michelle Obama

Our forever FLOTUS was crowned the #1 honoree on this year’s Root 100 list. Not only did Michelle Obama share her wisdom in a Q & A with The Root, but she also imparted precious gems during her national book tour for “The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times.” Obama was shockingly transparent, especially when it came to discussing her marriage as well as the societal pressures she faced as America’s only Black first lady. “I wasn’t just representing myself, I was representing the United States,” she told The Root. “In the end, I feel proud of the choices I made—and the example I tried to set.”

Ziwe has changed the way we consume modern day talk television. Her eponymous Showtime series boasted a slew of impressive guests including everyone from Wayne Brady to Amber Riley to Michael Che. Although she lost to her Republican opponent, Brian Kemp, she inspired millions across America with her fiery resolve toward progressive causes including voter suppression and abortion rights.

Waikinya Clanton

During Waikinya Clanton’s moving speech at The Root 100, she made it a point to emphasize that her work as the Director of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Mississippi state office is personal. Her guidance during the Jackson water crisis was crucial: she made sure water and other supplies were delivered to elderly and disabled residents who couldn’t access water distribution sites. Clanton also increased efforts from Mississippi Rapid Response Coalition for residents, pointing out the crisis was a result of a racial and political divide.

Lizzo won 2022 by simply minding her Black beautiful business! No one could silence Meghan Markle this year. Her cover story for The Cut surprisingly revealed her peaceful new life in California after exiting the UK. Markle’s successful podcast, “Archetypes,” examined the roles women have historically been relinquished to. In addition, Harry & Meghan–the Netflix docuseries featuring her and hubby Prince Harry–took a harrowing look at the racism deeply embedded in the British monarchy. Gabriella Karefa-Johnson

Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, the Global Contributing Fashion Editor-at-Large for Vogue, put Kanye West in his place earlier this year during Paris fashion week. The controversial rapper, who now goes by the moniker Ye, pulled one of his most ridiculous stunts to date: he had models at one of his shows wear “White Lives Matter” shirts. He also brought out Candace Owens as a special guest. Even though it made her a target of the artist, she wrote on Instagram: “I do think if you asked Kanye, he’d say there was art, and revolution, and all of the things in that T-shirt. There isn’t.”

If Tiffany Cross has a brand, it would definitely be truth-telling. She bravely tackled Tucker Carlson, called out Megyn Kelly’s stupidity and advocated for diversity in media when she made a guest appearance on The Root video series “The Callout.” When news broke that MSNBC wouldn’t be renewing her popular show The Cross Connection, outrage from Black journalists was swift and powerful. As expected, Cross took the high road regarding the whole situation: “But, after more than 20 years in journalism, I will not stop. The attacks on me from other outlets and former hosts will never control my narrative.”

Oriaku Njoku

Oriaku Njoku was honored this year at The Root 100 for their work to protect women’s rights as the Executive Director of The National Network of Abortion Funds. This proved vital in a year where Roe v. Wade was overturned. In 2015, Njoku co-founded ARC-Southeast, which provides funding and support for Southerners to receive safe reproductive services, including abortion. They also made the 2022 TIME100 Next list.

KeKe Palmer

Mama-to-be KeKe Palmer had a reign in 2022 that just wouldn’t let up! From that daring pregnancy reveal during her Saturday Night Live hosting duties to stealing the spotlight in Jordan Peele’s Nope, all eyes were on KeKe as she reminded folks that she is definitely a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood. She was number 22 on The Root 100list for a reason: there will never be anyone like her, periodt.

Sheryl Lee Ralph

Sheryl Lee Ralph made history this year by becoming the second Black woman to win an Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Her breakout role on Quinta Brunson’s ABC hit series, “Abbott Elementary,” garnered her the honor. Ralph’s victory was long overdue, as the Hollywood veteran boasts a career that spans nearly five decades. In addition, this year she also received the Honorary Order of Jamaica and TV Humanitarian Award from the Creative Coalition. Ralph will continue to be an inspiration for generations to come.

Chloe X Halle

Is there anything these sisters can’t do? Chloe and Halle Bailey both have had a remarkable year. The former was not only an honoree of The Root 100, but she also accepted her award at the ceremony in person declaring the vitality of Black womanhood. Halle, on the other hand, had racists undone when the trailer for Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid was released. However, it was long overdue that Black girls saw themselves as Disney princesses. The director of the film, Rob Marshall, told Entertainment Weekly that Bailey was chosen for the role because she was “incredibly strong, passionate, beautiful, smart, clever.”

Aisha Pinky Cole

Aisha Pinky Cole changed the face of the food industry by specializing in vegan cuisine. The Slutty Vegan–her plant-based burger empire–has amassed a cult-like following which led to a cookbook this year called “Eat Plants, B*tch.” The Root 100 honoree, who was born and raised in Baltimore by her two Jamaican immigrant parents, showed how diverse and successful Black girls can be. In fact, her viral freestyle on Sway in the Morning from earlier this year, perfectly illustrated this point.

Karine Jean-Pierre made history earlier this year when she became the first Black person–and the openly LGBTQ person–to be named White House press secretary. Although she had racists crying that she was an affirmative action hire (as if white privilege isn’t a thing), her background speaks for itself. Before her latest stint, Jean-Pierre has served as Deputy Battleground States Director for President Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign as well as a political analyst for NBC and MSNBC.

Black owned whiskey brand Uncle Nearest just hit $100 million in sales this past October, and experts say that as one of the fastest growing companies on the market, it is the brand to look out for in the next year.

According to a December 6 press release, Uncle Nearest is projected to double that number by the end of 2023 with an estimated $200 million. Not only does the brand boast an impressive portfolio for its nascent five years in the industry—with products ranging in both age and character— adding to the brand’s appeal is its affordability. Bottles are priced between $49 to $149, urging consumers to stock their pantries with multiple bottles at a time.

The 323-acre distillery is located in Shelbyville, Tennessee and is family owned and operated. Founded in 2017 by the company’s current CEO Fawn Weaver, Uncle Nearest was later bolstered by Chief Business Officer Katharine Jerkens, and Nearest Green’s great-great-granddaughter (and the brand’s master blender) Victoria Eady Butler. In 2021, the family celebrated becoming the best-selling Black owned spirits brand in the United States.

“To reach this and every other milestone on our horizon, we continue to push nonstop, ” Weaver shared in the release. “Every cent we make in the future will continue to do the same. We have an entire generation of women and people of color, who represent 70 percent of our country but still feel marginalized and underrepresented, counting on us. This group continues to look to Uncle Nearest as proof that anything is possible. We will not let them down.”

But growth does not stop here. The company is committed to investing in the next generation of Black distillers. With the Black Business Booster program, the Nearest and Jack Advancement Initiative, and Uncle Nearest Ventures, Black and minority owned businesses are supported with resources, and professional mentorship opportunities.

We love to see it, and we’re certain that Uncle Nearest will be keeping holiday drinkers happy for decades to come.
