Mixing Magic and Science to Shape Dragon Breath
Tumblr media
I'd be lying if I said dragons weren't my favorite magical creatures. There are literally two of them on my desk right now, and I have handed more people the Temeraire books than I care to count. That said, the vast majority of my dragon experience is with what I'm gonna call white westerner dragons. If they're not literally fantasy British, they're inspired by fantasy British dragons, and the dragon world is just a lot bigger than that. So I was absolutely delighted to find a book with a Nampeshiwe and broaden my dragon horizons. Let's talk To Shape A Dragon's Breath.
When Kasaqua chooses Anequs to be Nampeshiweisit, it is largely a matter of safety that first convinces Aneques to leave Masquapaug to learn the skiltakraft to effectively Shape Kasaqua's breath. However, this is an Indigenous woman walking into the heart of Fantasy North America with flavors of Fantasy Nordic Countries, so... colonialism, white supremacy, racism, and imperialism are massive themes and major roadblocks that Anequs experiences. And experiences again. And again. And again. From literally everyone, from her friends, to uneasy allies, to indifferent classmates to bitter enemies. The nuance and variation in the racism that Anequs goes head to head with was stunning--as in it left me absolutely stunned.
On top of that, the world is developed to the point that Frau Kuiper keeps laying out multifaceted, multi-party political issues and Anequs just keeps having to go "literally all of these perspectives share the assumption that my people are uncivilized and need either exterminating or civilizing. What if we tried assuming we are people just as civilized as you with a culture culture traditions just as deeply held?" It's amazing how many characters tell Anequs that she is rude for suggesting that she is a person. Like the number of people I wanted to punch while reading was astounding.
That said, no character in this book is a simple allegory or one-dimensional caricature. Theod Knecht was separated from his family and his people at birth and raised to believe that the other way to be a person was to be Anglish--and even then, he could never be Anglish enough to be fully human. His arc is the complicated emotions of unlearning a system that says you have no worth and reconnecting with your people.
Sander is Anglish and coded as Autistic, but he and Anequs have one of my favorite friendships in this book. They take each other day by day on their own terms and at their own paces, and honestly Sander is just a sweetheart.
Liberty is in an interesting position because she is indentured and living in an Anglish society, which prohibits same-sex relationships. Which does not stop Anequs from expressing her feelings for Liberty in ways that are safe and supportive of Liberty. These two are darling and I genuinely cannot wait to see where they go in the sequel.
Then we come to Kasaqua. Kasaqua is just literally playfulness and joy in dragon form, and she is a delight. She isnt as talkative as say Naomi Novik or Rebecca Yarros's dragons are, but she is expressive and personality-filled nonetheless. There is also her deep-seated joy at [redacted because that's kind of a major spoiler and I don't want to spoil this book].
All these relationships really form and solidify at Kuiper's Academy of Natural Philosophy and Skiltakraft, to which Anequs receives a full sholarship. The school is like a mix of senior high school and undergrad at university, since students between 16 and 20 attend. Most of the students are male, with Anequs and Marta the only female students in attendance for this book. The school is run by Frau Kuiper, who, in her day, basically pulled a Mulan/Alanna of Trebond to get chosen by a dragon, trained, and then sent to the front of a war where she distinguished herself. Her "pet project" to to use Anequs and Theod to "prove that nackies can be civilized" which is honestly pretty gross and causes a metric ton of friction between her and Anequs. In the process though, Anequs learns lessons that it is debatable whether Frau Kuiper meant to teach her that I think will let her be heard in Anglish society enough to support and preserve her people.
Overall, this book was amazing. It was HEAVY, but it needed to be, and that weight just adds to the reading experience. This is one of those books that just literally everyone should have to read at some point.

Unrestored 1934 Mercedes-Benz 500 K Offener Tourenwagen,
The name Offener Tourenwagen, or “open touring car,” in Mercedes-Benz parlance often brings to mind the vast and weighty 770 Ks of the late 1930s. On their sibling supercharged 500 K chassis, however, it referred to something entirely different: a very attractive two-door open model, with a rather low, subtly curving beltline, that recalled the powerful Sports 4 style of earlier K and S-type models. It was a very sporting automobile and one of the most masterful creations of the factory coachbuilders at Sindelfingen, who finished each body with the superb craftsmanship and quality materials for which they were renowned.
Chassis 105355, is one of only five surviving examples of this style on the 500 K chassis. According to its original Mercedes-Benz kommission sheet, a copy of which is on file, this car was originally delivered in late 1934 to Rudolf Hess of Berlin, one of the highest ranking members of the ruling National Socialist German Workers’ Party. Hess famously flew solo to Scotland in 1941 in a failed attempt to get the UK to exit the war. Instead, he was taken prisoner and convicted. To the victors, however, go the spoils: The 500 K was eventually commandeered at the end of WWII, and like so many of its brethren, wound up being used by American GI’s in Germany, then afterward came to the US.
As early as 1955, the car was in the ownership of V. Link Milsark of Vienna, West Virginia; a copy of a West Virginia title in his name, dated that year, is on file. Known to friends as “The Mayor of Rose Holler,” Mr. Milsark was an auto mechanic, aviator, model train collector, and a genuine character in every sense of the word. He is not known to have shown the 500 K in his decades of ownership but was nonetheless an enthusiastic owner, maintaining membership in and listing the car with the Classic Car Club of America for decades.
Mark Smith acquired the long-hidden Milsark 500 K in 2005 through what can only be described as one of his characteristic transactions, involving multiple cars and parties. He was undoubtedly pleased with the acquisition, which remained one of the great centerpieces of his collection ever after.
Retaining its original, numbers-matching chassis and engine per factory records, as well as the original typenschild on the firewall, the car remains startlingly original, never restored, and “improved” only as necessary over the years. Mr. Smith kept it much as he acquired it, with sensitivity towards preserving the condition in which it had been left by its long-term prior owner. At some point the bottoms of the front seats were replaced and covers were fit over the seat backs; the balance of the interior, including the door cards and rear seat, is that fitted at Sindelfingen in 1934. A 1955–1956 West Virginia DMV inspection sticker is even still intact on the windshield.
Mr. Smith exhibited his 500 K in the Prewar Preservation class at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance® in 2006, and at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in 2019, where it received an Amelia Award in the exclusive 500 K/540 K class. Due to its high degree of originality and fascinating history, it ought to be a welcome entrant into many other concours, recognizing what its longtime owners saw in it: a very special automobile, made only more so by its passage through time.

WoT Meta: Tuon, the Seanchan, and their Role in the Story
I often see readers questioning the role or point of both Tuon, and more broadly, the Seanchan in the story. Wondering why Jordan would introduce such a reprehensible group only to leave them be, or even in a position of prosperity by the end of the series, and why Jordan would introduce a character like Tuon, who in many ways represents fundamental flaws at the heart of Seanchan culture and society, only to largely leave her unchallenged and without substantive character growth. And there is some truth to the criticism that the depiction of the Seanchan in the later half of the series lacks nuance and depth, being flattened (if not as badly as some elements of the story and world) into something simpler. Some of that is Sanderson’s fault, who by his own admission didn’t really get Tuon as a character, but I do think that there is a fundamental disconnect too, between the role Tuon and the Seanchan occupy in the story, and the role readers would like both to occupy.
The Power of Sincerity and Idealism
I’ve talked about this point before, but it bears repeating: one of the central themes of Wheel of Time is that sincere belief in something, regardless of what that thing is, is an inherently ennobling thing. To strive to live up to an ideal, regardless of what that ideal actually is, is one of the most powerful indicators of someone’s character and moral strength.
We see this time and time again play out throughout the series: the Tinkers’ sincere commitment to their non violence even in the face of a violent and cruel world is treated as worthy of not just respect but reverence, even by characters (such as Elyas and Perrin) who fundamentally disagree with that world view. Pedron Niall’s loss of faith in the Light, the way he has abandoned a sense of greater good and justice to focus on the pursuit of worldly power and political gain, is not just his undoing, but also the undoing ultimately of the Children of the Light, until they come under Galad’s leadership, who gains leadership and followers from his willingness to die for his convictions and justice. The Shaido are slowly eaten alive by their own greed and corruption, after they abandon their beliefs for the short-sighted spoils Sevanna and Couladin offer, while the rest of the Aiel walk their path towards Tamon Gai’don no matter how painful, staying committed to Ji'e'toh and their ideals of honor, and for that earn the respect of the vast majority of the cast. Even among team Shadow the most dangerous villains are not the most rawly powerful, but rather those with the sincerity of their convictions: most Darkfriends are seduced by promises of worldly power or satisfaction, revenge, gold, what have you. But it’s those who are truly committed who do the most damage: Ishamael, Alviarain, Graendal, Kadere.
To Jordan, the ability to aspire to something greater than yourself, to act in service to an ideal, is an inherently heroic trait. What you aspire to, matters too.
Which brings us to…
The Seanchan as the Ideal of Empire
From the moment they are more or less introduced, the Seanchan are meant to serve as a sort of platonic ideal of Empire, with all the good, and all the very bad of that. They are imperialistic conquers, who act on relatively flimsy justifications to consolidate rule. Their claim to Randland is based on a thousand year old, briefly held rule that didn’t even last a single lifetime, and their claim to their conquered lands in Seanchan itself largely seems to range from ‘well because we could’ to ‘SOMEONE had to impose order on to chaos’.
Stylistically, practically, and ideologically, the Seanchan are a mix of various empires throughout history: you can draw clean parallels to basically any Empire, but the most prominent are dynastic China (Strict social hierarchy, singular autocracy, and caste based slavery), Modern America (military culture and a standing professional army with clear balanced branches), and post-Republic Rome (focus on culturally adapting to new lands, syncretism with local beliefs and ideas, and emphasis on imposing stability via conquest). They are meant to embody the ideal of Empire, and in keeping with that many of the Seanchan characters we meet that we are supposed to like are sincere believers in that Empire….but relatively few are in positions of real power.
Egeanin, for example, is constantly struggling because she is a sincere believer, and is forced to reckon with those beliefs when they slam up against her lived experience in Tanchico. The vast majority of the Seanchan PoVs scattered throughout Path of Daggers are much the same (key among them, Karede who is himself a slave, and later becomes a very important prominent character). But the closest thing to a sincere believer in the Empire that is in a position of power is High Lord Turak, and from what we see he is a noble, just, if somewhat bat shit crazy guy. (Notably he is not easily corrupted by Padan Fain’s temptations of power, and remains firm in his belief in the Empress), who inspires true loyalty from his followers and Household, but those beliefs also lead him to his (honorable) death against Rand at the end of TGH.
For most of the series our highest ranking Seanchan PoV is Suroth, and though the ingrained norms of her culture run deep…a true believer she is not. Not in the Shadow which she joined for political expediency, not expecting the End of Days to happen in her lifetime, or in the Empire she is supposed to serve, since her personal glory and that of her house are always at the forefront of her mind and actions, instead of what is best for the Empire as a whole.
Until that is, Tuon is introduced.
Tuon and Seanchan as messy, but nuanced
Many of the Seanchan’s cultural practices are abhorrent to us. The big one is slavery of course, but their attempt to colonize and subjugate Randland is also, objectively, awful on every level. And yet like many real-life nations and countries they defy simplification into bad guys by the virtue of not being monolithic, and for the most part, being unaware of their own injustices.
A combination of cultural brainwashing, simple indoctrination, and also just lack of information holds the Seanchan together broadly. Most citizens of the Empire buy into the prejudices about channelers that the Empire uses to justify their collaring, and into the idea that slavery is a necessity to avoid rampant poverty and social unrest. Notably, there is no state culture police enforcing these norms: when Min’s wearing trousers breaks the social convention during TGH, it’s the cook who gets annoyed, says that ‘everything and everyone has a place in the pattern and that place should be obvious at sight’, and insists she put on a dress to that ranks her with the serving girls.
The Empire has mechanisms of course to enforce its will, but interestingly those are angled mostly at recalcitrant and ambitious nobles, not the everyday folk. The Crystal Throne has sharply limited the power of its aristocracy, and established a secret police (the Seekers) mostly concerned with keeping them in line. Its standing army is professional and independently maintained, not dependent on feudal levies. Whenever we get a peek into the head of someone with influence and power, none of them seem overly concerned with the possibility of a slave revolt, or a popular uprising.
And that seems to be justified, since there exists powerful cultural and legal protections for both the common folk and slaves (probably established specifically to prevent uprisings and revolts). Mat notes for example during the occupation of Ebou Dar, that several of the heads put on spikes since the city fell belong to Seanchan themselves, and that petitions against Lords and Ladies are heard by magistrates as much as any other. We also see as early as the Fires of Heaven that the Seekers are principally concerned with curtailing and controlling the aristocracy, when Rand and Avihenda’s Seanchan field trip briefly brings them into contact with a Seeker who arrests a noble woman without a peep from her own retainers.
All of this points to the idea that, while we are supposed to be disgusted and horrified by the Seanchan, standing as they do in opposition to so many of our own values and morals, we aren’t supposed to be able to outright dismiss them.
Which incidentally, is how we’re supposed to feel about Tuon too.
It’s important that we're introduced to her, not in glory or power, conquest or victory, not scheming and plotting and asserting her rule. But instead in a moment of humanity and humility. Jordan opens on Tuon reflecting on what she’s done wrong, and showing empathy and expressing regret to a damane, a person on the lowest rung of Seanchan society. In a way that is horrifying because it still denies that woman’s personhood and agency, and yet in a way that also shows Tuon capable of admitting she is wrong, of being willing to learn and grow, and show regret.
Tuon believes, truly believes, in the Empire she is destined to rule. She believes it is a force for good and stability, that it will improve the lives of those she conquerors, and be to the ultimate good of the world. She is wrong, but the story asks us to understand why she believes what she does, and to show as much respect for that as we do the beliefs of our other characters, even when they're wrong.
And that’s the conundrum of Tuon and the Seanchan more broadly. It’s Egeanin and Nynaeve’s conflict writ large: Nyneave thinks it would be so simple, so easy if Egeanin just sucked, if she wasn’t a living breathing complicated person who Nyneave liked a little bit. In the same way it would be a lot easier if the Seanchan were just an evil monolith and Tuon were just a classic evil Empress. But it also wouldn’t be very realistic, or very human.
The Long Painful Road of Character Development
Crossroads of Twilight gets a lot of flack, some justified, some less so. But one thing that it inarguably does very effectively, is show Tuon both as human, and as someone still trying to grow and learn.
She outright tells Mat during CoT that part of the reason for her going along with the kidnapping is because she wants the chance to better understand the Altarans as a people, since she knows that she will have to understand them to be able to effectively rule them. We see the fruits of some of that in TGS when she wins Beslan over to her side via concessions and promises that make him into a powerful ally instead of a dangerous enemy, going so far as to promise him an apology from the Crystal Throne if it turns out that Suroth murdered his mother (which shocks most of the Blood).
We also see that curiosity and desire to grow in other ways: her visit to the supposed Hell where she is trying (with all the grace of cat attempting to visit a wolf den) to show respect and learn more about the sorts of people who normally she would never get the chance to meet. She neither attempts to overawe or browbeat the show performers (her largest problem with the cover story she’s forced to adopt is that she’s supposedly a thieving servant, not a servant), and she even entertains constant discussions, debates, and challenges from Satelle Anan, not just on the subject of damane, but on da'covale and slavery more generally.
As important as CoT and KoD are to establishing Tuon and Mat’s weird dynamic, they are even more important for establishing the sort of person Tuon is. Proud, but not to the point of arrogance or without reason. Sincere in her convictions and beliefs, but still willing to reconsider when with the evidence of her own senses. Stubborn, but not so rigid in her thinking or unwilling to adapt that she would threaten her Empire’s well being for it.
None of this is painless of course, and part of the fun is that it is painful for both Mat and Tuon to learn and develop, to see each other as human rather than as the archetypes they represent. Nothing ever stays the same in Jordan’s world (or our own for that matter) things are constantly changing, sometimes with terrible speed, sometimes with infuriating slowness, but always they are shifting, and very rarely are those shifts painless.
The same is true for the Seanchan, and we see some of that again in the last few books, with their increasing willingness to work with the Westlands, and to overcome their own prejudices for the sake of a greater good. Tylee’s alliance with Perrin over the Shaido and its consequences are the best microcosm of this, both parties being impacted by the events more than they realize, but we see it in small ways too, with the increasing adoption of Westlander customs by the Seanchan in Altara.
The final few books do feature the apex of both arcs. Broadly, the Seanchan joining of the coalition against the Shadow (which reflects the real-world geopolitical necessity of having to work with those you often find abhorrent), and specifically Tuon’s willingness to place her complete trust in Mat in that battle are two things that were largely seen as impossible prior to CoT, and are only arrived at through a great deal of pain on all sides.
The main problem is partly Sanderson: as I’ve talked about before,he struggles with nuance and ambiguity. He likes clarity and simplicity. But he does expend effort to try with the Seanchan which is to his credit I think, even if it doesn't hit the way it should. The other part of the problem I think lays with the readers, who also want to simplify both Tuon and the Seanchan, for them to be archetypes rather than nuanced. For the Empire to simply be evil, the Empress to simply be a tyrant, and the people of the Empire to be either dupes, defectors, or devils.
Part of me can’t blame people for that reaction- Empires have done so much bad in the real world, some of it very recently that it makes sense to have a strong emotional reaction, especially when the Seanchan draw on a lot of the practices of those same Empires in their effort to colonize the Westlands. But the Wheel of Time has always been about nuances and complexity, about looking beyond gut reactions and simple thinking to see the complexity of the world Jordan presents, and our own through it.
The Seanchan and Tuon are part of that, and refusing to engage with them with the same nuance you might find in other parts of the setting, or other characters, is at least a little bit, missing the point.

Excerpt from this New York Times story:
The Biden administration on Thursday finalized a rule meant to speed up federal permits for major transmission lines, part of a broader push to expand America’s electric grids.
Administration officials are increasingly worried that their plans to fight climate change could falter unless the nation can quickly add vast amounts of grid capacity to handle more wind and solar power and to better tolerate extreme weather. The pace of construction for high-voltage power lines has sharply slowed since 2013, and building new lines can take a decade or more because of permitting delays and local opposition.
The Energy Department is trying to use the limited tools at its disposal to pour roughly $20 billion into grid upgrades and to streamline approvals for new lines. But experts say a rapid, large-scale grid expansion may ultimately depend on Congress.
Under the rule announced on Thursday, the Energy Department would take over as the lead agency in charge of federal environmental reviews for certain interstate power lines and would aim to issue necessary permits within two years. Currently, the federal approval process can take four years or more and often involves multiple agencies each conducting their own separate reviews.
“We need to build new transmission projects more quickly, as everybody knows,” Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said. The new reforms are “a huge improvement from the status quo, where developers routinely have to navigate several independent permitting processes throughout the federal government.”
The permitting changes would only affect lines that require federal review, like those that cross federally owned land. Such projects made up 26 percent of all transmission line miles added between 2010 and 2020. To qualify, developers would need to create a plan to engage with the public much earlier in the process.
“Federal permitting isn’t the only thing holding back transmission, but if they can cut times down by even a year, and if we have fewer projects that take a decade or more, that’s a big win,” said Megan Gibson, the chief counsel at the Niskanen Center, a research organization that recently conducted two studies on federal transmission permitting.
The rule would not affect state environmental reviews, which can sometimes be an even bigger hurdle to transmission developers who are facing complaints and lawsuits over spoiled views and damage to ecosystems.

The reason we dont have a culture anymore is because the lgbtq, feminist, black lives matter movement, the me too movement the destruction of the family unit, the destruction of friendships, gate keepers
The fact that people get angry at the american flag, the people that get angry at it, destroyed the american culture. Those are the people ,the people who protest on japans culture, those are the people that have destroyed our society, they are a mix of americans and immigrants, the people we call tourist where the ones that destroyed us, the rich snobs ,those who act rich, the children that are spoiled rotten desytoyed us ,the parents that said "i wont do what my dad did" the people that want to stop the generational trauma altogether,in some ways thats great but however trauma teaches us, it humbles us it warns us on whats dangerous
The MOCKING of christianity is the disrespect, the lack of chivalrous men,the stock piling of wealth ,the lack of proper justice, the men and women that trap their spouse into paying for a child that for men likely isnt theirs and so much more
A culmination of all these things
The only actual culture left are the hillbillies, the florida man , the motorcycle gangs, rednecks
These people, as far as i can tell, are one of the few people left with the american spirit , with a culture that survives being named and will survive persecution. Why? Because a lot of these people are veteran alot of these people fought for our countries they know what america means
How did this start? You wonder, well
For me as far as i can tell it started when americans began to call themselves african american it started with slurs it moved to women more and more leaving the home life ,it began with trends that didnt unify us it began with trends that divided us
I do not know how my home land my borinquen is today...i had to leave it due to reasons outside of my control, but when i was there ,there was unity, there was love there was respect ,it wasnt always the best
I could join in the fun myself due to being isolated in an apartment looking down at the happenings i still watch from phisical isolation. Now that i am on the ground, i am in america. All i see is a desolate desert
Dull colors, vast open roads, ghosts whispers of a past that was slowly bit by bit torn to shreds all thats left ,is drugs, sex endless rants, whimps that cry victim, people that blindly trust blindly blame blame blame, conspiracy theories and people divided glaring at eachother, endless secrets and a rabbit hole of depravity that doesnt end...it feels like the pits of hell and its gates are opening
People see it but do nothing because it 'not their problem
Im scared... I do not know what i can do. We've tried everything, and things aren't changing fast enough if things dont change FOR the better ,the monsters ,the predators amongst us the inhuman people amongst us the most deprived twisted beings that are being protected that we arent allowed to harm will harm us we cant protect ourselves, the children are being raised and born to be worse than the last generation
What can we do?
We can't do anything because we suffer from a cycle. Many places have managed to slow the cycle down,we are being fought over by two sides, and we do not know ,i do not know the reason but we are seen as a comodity for whatever reason ,is it our souls? Is it our attention? We never had a choice. We were never given one WE, who never had a voice
What would you choose ,Satan or god
It's a red herring... or so it feels like it to me,
It's either god or suffer, come to me, my child, or be destroyed ,blindly trust me child or suffer,we never had a choice jesus made that choice for us,one man one person made the choice for an unfathomable amount of lives ,hes the king hes all...and what are we?...he says we are kings and queens but are we? I stare at the angels. Did they have a choice? I look at the Bible, and i stare up at the stars , i yearn to be free, we are so close to it...and we are being struck down by something we can't comprehend something all powerful, something we cannot fight against no matter how hard we try, something we cannot escape from even in death
So many people silenced blindly trusting and distrusting
I wish deeply to ask jesus a question
Why does he blindly believe a father that was never there for him, a father that technically assaulted his mother that tained something so sacrilegious as a marriage? I understand why he didn't choose to side with Satan, but why, God, when he had a choice, a choice never said, choose neither... and choose everyone
I know my questions will land me in hell, all I hope i figure out my own way out somehow sometimes you must ask for help I know but sometimes that help comes with a price
All I want... all I crave is freedom ,no hellish jail, no collar and chain,no strings, no judgment
Why... do I crave this so badly that my body has goosebumps
I crave to create. I crave to explore the abyss of the cosmos I crave to learn,I CRAVE THE TRUTH
The more I look up, the more that dream is fading the more I see what God has done... the more I see dead or dying stars devastated planets ...has it always been this way? Or is this God's doing
If there's a father... where is the mother... who is the mother? There must be a mother out there, right?
I may be scared... but I must keep moving. I can not stop. I MUST break through no matter how much pain and how much suffering I must stay determined. I do not want to fight. All I want is freedom. Hurting someone is the last thing I want to do, so I place a shield upon myself. What color will it be? I do not know. I do not care. All colors are beautiful, hope, and love where given to me I will not allow God to take it away a gift is a gift after all and I accept your gift you shouldn't be expecting anything in return perhaps one day I'll be able to give back

"laments over violets" is such a pretty name for a story omfg, what is THAT about? I gotta know. im hooked.
Well, like I noted, It's part of the FCi3 series, and functions as a bit of a flashback/prequel of sorts in the main story line. A quick bit of backstory to catch you up to this portion of the story:
Here are some important intro posts for characters that would be involved in this story: Kris || Francis || Evan || Celia
After the months living alone in their childhood home, following the passing of their adoptive mother, Sharleen, Francis decided to post a few listings online in search of a housemate, who ends up being our main character, Kris. Laments Over Violets is what I would ideally like to be a double length/two-part episode that gives some backstory into Sharleen's character and how she made Francis the person they are now. Up until this point in the story, she is only ever really alluded to in passing (no pun indented), since her house is the main setting of the series, and Francis is having trouble getting rid of her things. It's in this part of the story that Kris learns about her in full, right alongside the reader/viewer. It's kind of supposed to be like one of those, bittersweet, cathartic, picture show type, "special" episodes, like that one episode of Scrubs with Brenden Frasier in it if you know it. Lots of nostalgic vibes, maybe some vintage color grading, with a bit of haze around the edges, like an old home VHS tape of a family movie— that is if this where to be a visual series of some sort.
Laments begins when Kris accidentally knocks over a pot of purple African violets while helping Francis in their efforts to downsize Sharleen's vast collection of curios and oddities, causing Francis to breakdown completely. Kris, not being one for plants, doesn't really understand "the big deal" because the flowers could just be replacement, but this is when Francis goes on to explain that those violets were Sharleen's favorite of all her houseplant collection, and that some of her ashes were mixed into the soil, just as she wanted, and now the plant was completely crushed the weight of the broken ceramic, which was also a handmade gift from a family friend.
Francis then goes on into a lengthy story, detailing Sharleen's life as a Korean adoptee, taken from her home during the Korean war, where she grows up in a religious, white family, who neglected to tell her about where she came from, or why she wasn't with her birth family anymore, and her struggle to find herself later in her adulthood. The story would cut back and forth between Francis telling her story to Kris, and the reader/viewer seeing the story play out in Sharleen's point of view. Her story would detail her successes as an entomologist and museum curator, her bout with ovarian cancer that would lead to her husband leaving her after she losses her fertility, and her battle to adopt Francis as a single, woman in her mid-fifties in 1990's America. I don't know why, but I really like adding deep historical lore to all my stories, it's kind of a problem.
It’s historical lore galore over here!!!✨
Also, I don’t want to spoil it too much, but let’s be honest, it will be ages before I get to finish this segment of FCi3, so I can spoil the ending song of the episode, I guess. Hope it hits you right in the feels.
Thanks @fartcowboy for allowing me to share this bit of my story planning. It’s been fun diving into this dusty old project of mine, and I hope to revive it a bit more in the near future.

Day One of recommending Book series
The selection is a great book series by Kiera Cass about a future where there was a great war and now everyone lives in vast Kingdoms. The main character is a girl named America Singer who is chosen by the King to compete in the selection. A competition over who will rule the kingdom alongside the next king Prince Maxon. The only problem with this is that America still has a lover from home.
Dont look at the next part unless you want something that could possibly spoil the books
While the first three books in the selection are about America Singer, the next 2 books are about America and Maxons daughter Eadlyn who is next in line for the throne, as she goes through her own selection
It is a great book series I read it in 2 days 10\10 would recommend

Wild hogs, also known as feral pigs or wild boars, have become a significant part of the American landscape, roaming across vast swathes of the country. While they're often considered a nuisance due to their impact on agriculture and native ecosystems, there's a growing interest in whether these animals can be more than just a pest. Specifically, can you eat wild hog, and if so, how do you go about it safely and deliciously? This article dives into the culinary world of wild hogs, exploring everything from health considerations to cooking tips that will help you turn a wild nuisance into a feast. Key Takeaways: - Wild hogs are edible and can offer a unique addition to your culinary repertoire. - Proper handling and cooking are crucial to avoid health risks associated with wild hog meat. - The flavor of wild hog is richer and more intense than domestic pork, offering a unique taste experience. - There are specific steps and precautions to take from field dressing to cooking to ensure the meat is safe and delicious. Understanding Wild Hog in the US Wild hogs are not native to the Americas. They were introduced by European settlers and have since become widespread, adapting to a variety of environments. These animals are incredibly resilient and prolific breeders, which has led to their classification as an invasive species in many areas. Despite the challenges they pose, wild hogs are a valuable resource for hunters and adventurous eaters alike, offering a sustainable source of meat that's both free-range and abundant. Health and Safety Considerations When considering eating wild hog, the first question many people have is whether it's safe. The answer is yes, but with some important caveats. Wild hogs can carry diseases and parasites, such as trichinosis, brucellosis, and E. coli, which can be transmitted to humans through undercooked meat or improper handling. However, these risks can be mitigated through thorough cooking and by following safe handling practices from the moment of the kill to the kitchen. Table 1: Common Diseases and Parasites in Wild Hogs Disease/Parasite Symptoms in Humans Prevention Method Trichinosis Fever, muscle pain Cook meat to 160°F Brucellosis Flu-like symptoms Wear gloves during field dressing E. coli Severe stomach cramps, diarrhea Proper cooking and handling Culinary Appeal of Wild Hog The taste of wild hog meat is often described as richer and more intense than that of domestic pork, with a leaner texture and a deeper color. This difference in flavor profile is due to the wild diet of these animals, as well as their active lifestyle. Wild hogs feed on a variety of foods, including nuts, fruits, roots, and small animals, which contributes to the complexity of their meat's flavor. Table 2: Flavor Comparison Between Wild Hog and Domestic Pork Aspect Wild Hog Domestic Pork Flavor Rich, intense Mild, less complex Texture Leaner, firmer Tender, more marbled Color Darker Lighter Nutritional Value Higher in protein, lower in fat Higher in fat, lower in protein Field Dressing and Safety Tips Field dressing a wild hog is the first step in ensuring the meat is safe to eat. This process involves removing the internal organs to prevent the meat from spoiling and to reduce the risk of disease transmission. It's crucial to wear gloves during this process and to use clean, sharp knives to avoid contamination. Table 3: Safety Equipment for Field Dressing Equipment Purpose Gloves Protect against disease transmission Sharp knives Ensure clean cuts and reduce contamination risk Clean containers Store meat safely during transport Butchering and Meat Processing After field dressing, the next step is butchering, where the meat is separated into various cuts. This process allows for more efficient cooking and storage, and it's where you can start to appreciate the variety of dishes that can be prepared from a single animal. Knowing how to properly butcher a wild hog not only maximizes the yield but also enhances the quality of the meat. Cooking Techniques and Recipes Cooking wild hog meat requires some consideration to ensure it's both safe and delicious. Due to the potential for disease, it's recommended to cook wild hog meat to an internal temperature of 160°F. This temperature is sufficient to kill any parasites or bacteria present in the meat. However, with the right techniques, such as slow cooking or smoking, you can achieve tender, flavorful dishes that highlight the unique qualities of wild hog meat. Table 4: Recommended Cooking Temperatures Cooking Method Internal Temperature Roasting 160°F Smoking 160°F Grilling 160°F In the world of wild hog culinary adventures, the possibilities are as vast as the landscapes these animals roam. From savory roasts to smoked ribs, the meat of wild hogs can be transformed into a variety of dishes that bring a taste of the wild into your kitchen. With the right knowledge and precautions, you can safely and deliciously enjoy the bounty that these animals provide, turning a challenge into an opportunity for sustainable and adventurous eating. FAQs Based on 'People Also Ask' on Bing Wild hog meat is often perceived as tougher than domestic pork due to the animals' active lifestyle and leaner body composition. However, when cooked properly, using methods like slow cooking or braising, wild hog meat can be tender and flavorful. The key is in the preparation and cooking process, which can break down the tougher muscle fibers and result in a delicious meal.Eating wild hog raw is not recommended due to the risk of trichinosis and other diseases that can be present in the meat. Cooking wild hog meat to an internal temperature of 160°F is crucial to ensure safety. It's always better to err on the side of caution and fully cook wild hog meat before consumption.Ensuring wild hog meat is safe to eat involves a few critical steps: proper field dressing, butchering, and cooking. By wearing gloves during field dressing, using clean equipment for butchering, and cooking the meat to the recommended temperature, you can significantly reduce the risk of disease transmission and enjoy wild hog meat safely. The best parts of a wild hog to eat depend on personal preference and cooking method. The shoulder and hindquarters are excellent for slow-cooking methods, such as roasting or braising, due to their larger size and tougher muscle fibers. The backstrap and tenderloin are leaner cuts that are best for quick cooking methods, like grilling or Cooking Wild Pork Cooking wild pork offers a unique opportunity to explore flavors and dishes that are not commonly found with domestic pork. The key to a delicious wild hog dish lies in the cooking method. Slow cooking, smoking, and braising are all excellent ways to tenderize the meat and infuse it with flavor. Experimenting with different herbs, spices, and marinades can also enhance the natural flavors of the wild hog, making each dish a memorable experience. Table 5: Popular Cooking Methods for Wild Hog Cooking Method Description Slow Cooking Breaks down tough fibers, resulting in tender meat Smoking Infuses meat with a smoky flavor, ideal for ribs and shoulders Braising Combines slow cooking and moist heat, perfect for tougher cuts Sustainable Hunting of Wild Pigs Sustainable hunting practices are crucial when it comes to managing wild hog populations. By adhering to local regulations, hunters can contribute to controlling the invasive species while also procuring meat for consumption. It's a balance between conservation efforts and taking advantage of the culinary opportunities wild hogs present. Riding the Wave: A Humorous Dive into the Global Wave Energy Market
Alright, folks, buckle up! We’re about to surf through the vast ocean of the Global Wave Energy Market — where the tides are high, the competition is fierce, and the potential is, well, making some waves.
The Wave Energy Buzz:
So, what’s the chatter all about? Well, it seems we’re onto something big. The Global Wave Energy Market is like that underdog in a superhero movie — started small, but boy, is it gearing up for an epic comeback! In 2022, it was chilling at a cozy USD 57.2 million but hold your hats, by 2031, it’s eyeing a whopping USD 233.20 million. That’s some serious growth — move over, stock market!
Tumblr media
Why the Hype?
In a world obsessed with clean energy, wave energy is the new cool kid on the block. It’s like the superhero cape of renewables, harnessing the mighty power of ocean waves. We’re talking about turning wave tantrums into a reliable source of electricity. The cool part? Minimal environmental drama and predictable as your morning coffee — now, that’s a win-win.
But, of course, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows (or should we say, waves). There are hurdles — like that annoying competition with other renewables and the not-so-wallet-friendly setup costs. It’s like trying to be the star quarterback when you’ve got a budget for a soccer ball — tough luck.
Market Rollercoaster:
Now, let’s hop on the rollercoaster of market snapshots. Europe, with its fancy focus on sustainability, is leading the pack. Shoutout to the UK and Portugal for being the MVPs. And oh, did we mention a growth rate of 16.9%? It’s like the market is on a perpetual energy high, and we’re just along for the ride.
Location, Location, Location:
The market’s playing the real estate game too. Onshore is the largest segment — the oceanfront property of renewables, if you will. But hey, near-shore is the fastest growing. It’s like the up-and-coming neighborhood where everyone wants to be. Meanwhile, offshore is doing its deep-sea thing, chasing those potent and consistent waves.
For More Information: https://www.skyquestt.com/report/wave-energy-market
Regional Drama:
Let’s talk regionally, shall we? Europe, with its avant-garde approach, is the reigning champ. APAC is catching up — Australia’s got its marine swagger, and Japan’s all about reducing fossil fuel clinginess. North America is in the game too, with the US and Canada flexing their renewable muscles. It’s like a renewable energy world cup, and everyone’s competing for the green trophy.
The Tech Talk:
Enough with the small talk; let’s dive into the tech realm. We’ve got Point Absorbers, doing the wave dance attached to the seabed. Then there’s the Oscillating Water Column — a chamber party partially submerged, making turbines groove to the wave beats. Attenuators are the cool kids in elongated structures, while Overtopping Devices are the wave spillage enthusiasts. It’s like a techno beach party where every gadget has its groove.
Market Dynamics Drama:
What drives this market soap opera? Well, global initiatives to combat climate change are pushing the renewable agenda. Ocean waves are like the unsung heroes in this eco-drama, offering a predictable and steady power source. But, hold your seahorses — high capital costs and competition with other renewables are the villains trying to spoil the party.
Competition Beach Bash:
In the competitive landscape, we’ve got the OGs like Ocean Power Technologies and Pelamis Wave Power. They’re like the veterans in the renewable rock band, setting the stage on fire. Then come the newbies — CorPower Ocean, Bombora Wave Power, and Eco Wave Power. It’s like a battle of the bands, but with wave energy converters instead of guitars.
Recent Developments:
Hold onto your surfboards; we’ve got some recent gossip. The Scottish government’s dropping £20 million into wave energy R&D, the European Union’s throwing USD 10.80 million at an innovative wave energy converter, and a Norwegian company just installed the first wave energy converter in Norway. It’s like the industry’s in a race to see who can make the biggest splash.
Conclusion — The Wave of the Future:
In the grand finale, the Global Wave Energy Market is riding high on the waves of innovation and sustainability. It’s a dynamic industry, facing challenges with a mix of humor, determination, and a touch of environmental consciousness. So, next time you hear about wave energy, don’t picture robots doing the tango — imagine a beach party where every wave is a step towards a greener tomorrow. Cheers to riding the wave of the future! 🌊🌐

Doubt thou the stars are fire; Doubt that the sun doth move; Doubt truth to be a liar; But never doubt I love. William Shakespeare, Hamlet, 1601
The matrimony between statecraft and the conquest of the cosmos birthed the space industry in a concerted effort to seize the final frontier. A triumvirate of government, academia and corporations found common cause in the geopolitics of the Cold War to mobilize minds and machines against the Soviets whose Sputnik orbited the earth by 1957. This shot across the bow of a lone satellite in the outlands of the stars rattled American exceptionalism insofar as policymakers perceived it to be an existential threat over their monopoly of the sciences. The slender orb of 83.6kg evoked paranoia due to how swift the Soviet Union transitioned into a knowledge-based economy. Any robust space industry cultivates a panoply of ancillary sectors from vast spillovers to fabricate composite metals, semiconductors, liquid fuels and other things of this ilk. Prima facie the coup was prodigious by itself but the infrastructure behind it left Washington reeling. Manifestly the communists confirmed themselves to be lightyears ahead of their counterparts in the research of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The postwar propaganda value of boasting the know-how of rocketry to escape earth’s gravity rallied brains and brawn around the flag in a species of a Manhattan Project redux.
In the infancy of the space derby the torrent of Soviet victories intensified rivalries in the bipolar world. The canine Laika became the first mammal to voyage the ether in 1957. Luna 2 probed the Moon’s surface on the maiden trip of its kind in 1959. Luna 3 purveyed to the world its first glimpse of the far side of the Moon in 1959. Venera 1 established a record as the first interplanetary vehicle to effect a flyby of Venus in 1961. Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin followed suit by entering the firmament as the first human in 1961. Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova defied gender norms as the first woman to orbit earth in 1963. Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov partook in the first spacewalk in 1965. Mars 3 captured immortality as the first manmade craft to land on the Martian planet in 1971. The string of triumphs and their rapid succession aroused awe and dread on terra firma amongst the cognoscenti in the Beltway. Such a truncated turnaround from the ravages of WWII called into question whether in fact the communist model of governance was indeed leaps and bounds ahead of free market capitalism. The gulf of a knowledge gap that differentiated the Soviet space program from the amorphous one in America left skeptics of the former agog. For a time the legion of scientists under the auspices of the politburo’s central planning seemed omniscient.
Such centralization of the bureaucracy unmolested by partisanship or a farrago of stakeholders created small skunkworks under the nomenclature of OKBs wherein discoveries were made at the cadence of a metronome. Not at all enigmatic in retrospect this quantum leap also stemmed from its piracy that was more rapacious than America’s. Whereas Washington acquired intellectual assets via Operation Paperclip the Soviet’s variant of Osoaviakhim in 1946 conscripted a whole brigade of German minds to catapult space exploration. Wernher von Braun and a cohort of his scientists from Peenemünde were spirited away to Washington whilst Moscow’s dragnet repatriated exponentially more in human capital and technology (Neufeld 2004). The poaching of knowledge midwifed the series of records monopolized by the superpower in the incipient years of the space race. The spoils of war from German heuristics wedded to indigenous capabilities proved to be a boon for the Soviets who were keen to parade the merits of communism. Indeed the Kremlin’s industrial complex revolutionized space travel for the sake of ideological warfare against its nemesis. The disparities were quite vast. America’s Project Mercury sought to put an astronaut in orbit as the Soviet’s Luna missions were already plumbing the Moon in 1959.
In the prelude to the moonshot of Apollo the saga of America’s space industry begins with the importation of V-2 rockets from the Nazi regime which whetted the enthusiasm for escaping earth’s gravity. Under Project Hermes the autopsy on these missiles saw the technology reverse engineered in an effort to breach the Karman Line of the upper atmosphere. A whole 300 boxcars of miscellaneous V-2 hardware smuggled from Germany made their way to the White Sands Proving Ground in New Mexico where 67 units were reassembled between 1946 and 1951 (Buchanan et al. 1984). Telemetry data from subsequent tests telescoped the learning curve to spur the development for Apollo’s workhorse known as the Saturn V rocket whose pedigree veritably traces back to the V-2s. At this early juncture it was the firm General Electric with which Washington rendezvoused so as to scrutinize these artifacts for their ballistics and gyrostabilized guidance systems. A constellation of scientists were contracted to harvest the secrets hidden within the entrails of the V-2s in a bid to marshal propulsion and re-entry technologies into maturity. Borne from this fact-finding mission did GE design avionics that later computed the terabytes of data for the Apollo moonshot. The firm would be the first embraced in the bosom of the space program.
Post the industrial policy of this public-private partnership the space industry sired the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as its guardian in 1958. The institution’s formation heralded a departure from space’s militarization towards its exploration to demystify the mysteries of the cosmos. The separate track charted a course to the stars for civilian ends at variance with the Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) that put a premium on technology for martial use. Founded fourth months prior to NASA this other agency’s mandate was written in rebuttal to the USSR’s launch of Sputnik. Within this bifurcation the raison-d’être for each hinged on war in the case of DARPA and peace in the case of NASA. The civilian program’s prime directive as distilled in section 102 of the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 empowered the institution to one end alone of making America a leader in the Olympics of science. NASA wasted no time in engineering a stepwise roadmap between the triad of Projects Mercury, Gemini and Apollo in this chronological order. Each unique phase rested along a spectrum in the mastery of technology beginning with a manned craft in space to orbital docking and finally a lunar expedition. NASA summarily evolved into a hive of innovation.
After GE’s forensics upon reconstituting the hodgepodge of V-2 rocket paraphernalia amidst Project Hermes the next private firms entrusted with reifying America’s curiosity with outer space were Chrysler and McDonnell Aircraft. Industrial policy shovelled $277m or $2.9t in real value for its pecuniary commitment towards the first phase christened Project Mercury (DiLisi et al. 2019). The industrial heritage of Chrysler hitherto as a marque of Plymouths and Dodges appears paradoxical for such high-tolerance engineering but the firm proved its poise in WWII when it mass-produced 25,000 M4 Sherman Tanks (Davis 2007). To segue into this highbrow application the company collaborated with the prodigy von Braun who was the doyen of rocket science. Chrysler would be the proverbial blacksmith for the single-stage Redstone booster whose propulsion from 78,000 pounds of thrust bore astronaut Alan Shepard into suborbital space in 1961 (Bentley 2009). It fell to McDonnell Aircraft to manufacture the spacecraft itself meant to house the life support systems for a solitary occupant in the antipodes of space. Everything from the heat-shield for re-entry to the escape system that jettisoned the capsule with a parachute should the mission be aborted in the event of a catastrophic failure was designed by the firm.

Heli Skiing
Backcountry Snowcats presents a remote catskiing expertise the place the deep, dry snow of the South Chilcotin Mountains will spoil you eternally. 15,000 acres of assorted terrain that's accessible in all weather situations. Last Frontier Heliskiing began operating out of Bell 2 Lodge in 1996.
With over a hundred named runs now established, and a glading program that has taken treed runs from solid to spectacular, each single run is now a treat from high to bottom. Although stunning we arrived to some very wind affected circumstances so though the athletes made it look easy it was troublesome Heli skiing BC snow to ski and tougher to shoot. Something that's never good for morale, can usually limit what’s protected to ski and always a challenge within the business of being an outside creator.
At over 15 km in size, the resort additionally boasts the longest ski run in North America. If you want to problem your self with unbelievably long fall line groomers or deep snow, and if off-piste, tree skiing sounds interesting to you, Revelstoke Mountain Resort is the place to ski. Located simply exterior of the funky and vibrant metropolis of Nelson, it's exhausting to describe its true authenticity and abundance of snow. Over 12 m of snow falls each season on 2,044 vertical feet of uncrowded slopes of family-friendly groomers and bumps, remarkable steeps, top-of-the-line tree-skiing and infinite backcountry. This 12 months marks a new chapter for this legendary resort with a number of upgrades and an expanded Glory Lodge. A key a part of the resort’s experience is the legendary food.
Skiers can even shred the pow with Olympic champion Nancy Greene, who spends ample time on the mountain and frequently skis with friends. Watch for signage on the high and backside of the Sunburst chairlift to study whether or not Nancy is on the mountain. Powder skis are wider underneath the boot than most different skis, and customarily shorter than regular skis. In very deep powder, true powder skis make an enormous Heli skiing BC distinction, as fat-boy powder skis provide further stability within the backcountry. The big platform underfoot helps intermediates remain balanced in deep snow, and the fat ideas keep skiers from submarining by offering maximum flotation in deep powder. Skiers should convey their very own ski poles and ski boots, which can simply be fitted to rental skis.
And, should you need more convincing, the corporate has been topped one of the best heli-skiing operation on the earth for the previous 5 years. Hakai was approached by the lodge operators to construct and deploy a distant camera system that was durable sufficient to operate in an uncovered alpine setting with minimal upkeep. Weather extremes on this area include sub -30C temperatures and high variability of snow conditions. High wind and ice accumulation add to the challenge of putting in any kind of stand-alone expertise.
However, high-end powder skiing mostly is dependent upon prosperous international customers. With over 150,000 acres at our disposal, our heli and boarding terrain is each vast and breath taking. Offers bespoke wilderness adventures with quick access via Williams Lake Airport . With the snow already coming down in Whistler, it’s exhausting not to get excited in regards Heli skiing BC to the mountain opening in November. Whistler Blackcomb presents skiers an enormous quantity of terrain, accessible by lifts and gondolas, the place you can find some of the greatest snow circumstances of your life. While Whistler Blackcomb is genuinely a skiers paradise, it’s beyond these mountains in the vast backcountry where the true skiing and boarding experience begins.

This NYT article blurb is… flawed lol. Why do objects only belong to “humankind” when they’re located in the United States? Its argument against museum repatriation is that the US mostly, and Britain/France also, should be the world centers of art-viewing, even if part of the reason they got there is just by stealing a bunch of art.
Then there’s the idea of the “surge,” museums being “randomly depleted.” Like the museums are being irrational, succumbing to the “woke” spell, from which we will awaken, 10 years from now, and say, “What were we thinking? Those fine artifacts, gifts to humankind, lost to the savages!” Are those asking for artifacts back succumbing to the woke spell too? Is the call for for museum repatriation, to some degree, just political grandstanding? Like, idk, the origin countries trying to gain cultural capital, or to weaken the mythos of the US somehow? Is it politicians trying to drum up votes by igniting nationalist fervor?
Well, first of all, the vast majority of artifacts in question were stolen, and the rest, the argument goes, were the spoils of coercion or incomplete consent (trickery, political occupation, authorization by someone without the authority — this happened a lot in Native American land purchases, they would get some random Native American guy to sign the papers). So the “depletion” isn’t random — stolen items are being removed — except insofar as the repatriation is not internationally systemic and American collections now having holes, apparently, that they didn’t have before. Is “coercion” a slippery slope? If it is, a slope to what? Second, what’s wrong with other countries wanting more cultural capital, perhaps at some expense to America’s? Who is arguing against this, besides Americans?
Who really benefits from the centralization of art objects besides the people with the means and will to visit America? The average person might benefit more from those cultural riches in their own countries. For scholars and (and for the worldwide benefit of scholarship), maybe centralization makes sense. But I wonder if there might be workarounds for this. And repatriation may even enrich scholarship in the origin country.
And then there’s the whole question of how long a country is responsible for its past crimes… well… a lot of artifacts were stolen only in the 60s. Elderly Nazi generals are still being arrested, not that this is equivalent at all, but there is some precedent. Another difference being there has been no worldwide trial to determine justice for stolen art. Maybe there should be. That would fix the problem of “random” depletion, for one — it would create a system of guidelines for identifying and repatriating art.
And then in this blurb to promote the other ways, unrelated to the museum repatriation issue, that museums are being more progressive, is very silly. That doesn’t solve the matter at hand and is biased reporting??? (Because it looks like they’re trying to say “we don’t need all this repatriation business — look at all the nice things museums ARE doing for nonwhite cultures!”) Idk if it’s purposeful but if it is, omg NYT shame on you.
What I’m more worried about (imo, I’m not that educated on this lol) is the level of risk to the artifact if it were returned to its country. E.g. ISIS destroyed tons of priceless, ancient artifacts in Iraq. In countries constantly under attack (not that sculptures are even the most important matter here, people dying is), then yeah, maybe keep the objects in countries that are more stable. But the NYT is talking about Italy, Greece, Cambodia, Egypt, and Nigeria… idk if that applies here. Maybe in Cambodia or Egypt? I don’t know, there would have to be some kind of evaluation (and it wouldn’t be black and white, it would be some percentage of risk). And maybe some new international laws on not letting insurgents fuck up art pieces. Or where the art is sent if there’s a clear and present threat of conflict. Again though, extremely sad to be talking about this when we can’t or won’t protect /people/.
THEN you get into this whole argument I heard from my two expat Indian professors in a college class which is like… the western ideal of eternal preservation for art/religious objects is not necessarily shared throughout the world. E.g. in India, ancient temples are still regularly attended for worship, and it’s not impossible to find ancient goods for sale. Ironic for the US to have a strong opinion about preservation when any non-indigenous cultural artifact has been here for 300 years at most (I do wonder about all those open-air petroglyphs just totally open for hikers to mess with though). Let’s say it’s a situation where an origin country/people wants a stolen object back, they turn down an offer to be fairly compensated for it, and a replica of the stolen object (even produced by the traditional culture and craft!) can’t be made - eg if the object is ancient and there is something to be gleaned from that. In that case I think there might be merit to preservation over return. Because then it comes down to a difference in cultural beliefs: preservation vs reuse, gradual evolution, or religious disposal. And if scholars believe there is serious merit to preserving the object for study, then I have a much more ambivalent opinion about repatriation. Idk. My guess is that’s a concern only for a minority of repatriation cases.
Conclusion: some objects should be repatriated. Some should not. Repatriation should be determined by whether the object was legitimately acquired, the risk to the object of returning it to its origin country, and the original object’s importance to current and potential scholarship, if it is to be reused or destroyed. Maybe this could be determined by a neutral third party. A SHOCKING conclusion. I don’t expect anyone to get through all this lol but would love to know what you guys think?
