I thought I had already been clear on what my stance was on the matter, but after today I feel like I need to yell it off the top of my lungs. I SUPPORT ROETVEEG PIET AND BLM. LISTEN TO BLACK VOICES AND ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR WRONGS.

Summary

Sinterklaas is a Dutch tradition that starts at the first Saturday after 11 November and ends at 5 December. A figure called Sint Nicholaas comes on a boat from Spain to the Netherlands to celebrate his birthday on the 5th with his little helpers, the Zwarte Pieten. The Zwarte Pieten give candy to the kids and on the 5th kids get a gift from Sinterklaas.

The Racism (Black Pete)

All sounds fairly innocent, until you see what the Zwarte Pieten look like.

These are the traditional Zwarte Pieten (it translates to Black Petes btw). These individuals are usually played by white people and are purposely darkened to black with red lipstick, black curly hair and sometimes golden earrings. I have always been told the dark skin was to represent “soot” from the chimneys, however, up until recent years there was no effort made to actually appear as smeared. In fact, a lot of effort was put into making sure not a single speck of light skin was visible because that could ruin the illusion. (the illusion being, hiding your identity behind blackface.)

These characters are also played to be playful, hyperactive, carefree, happy to do their work and often praise Sinterklaas himself. Which are all traits often depicted alongside the “happy slave” stereotype from way back when and the S*mbo stereotype.

other racist depictions are also on display in stores and houses (often on display near a window for kids to see) in the form of little Black Petes, most of them resembling the G*lliw*g. (first image is a common window prop during Sinterklaas, the second image is the racist G*lliw*g)

This very outdated depiction of black people only really started being questioned in the early 2010′s. However, support for questioning Black Pete only started to become somewhat acceptable around 2016/2017... And even then the public has been largely Pro Black Pete until 2020, after the Black Lives Matter movement also started to become a valid topic of discussion in the Netherlands.

The Transition

Between 2010 and 2020 a lot happened since Black Pete officially got taken into question and talk about whether or not Black Pete should be changed started to become a genuine topic of discussion. When the question first rang, the majority of the Dutch folk were against the change. I was against this change as well. I think I should note that I was around 13 at the time and it is a very common phenomenon for kids to mimic the opinion of their parents and teachers. But this indeed a genuine opinion I had at some point and I acknowledge that with full responsibility.

The main reasons everyone was against this change was because we did not see it as racist and were convinced the “goal” with this movement was to entirely remove Pete from the holiday or remove the holiday as a whole from the list.

I would also like to note that the Dutch folk’s opinion on what is and isn’t racist is very outdated as well. (As I write this now in 2020 it is still not a whole lot better but around the 2010′s it was definitely worse.) As this topic gained attraction, jokes about black men having huge dicks (the m*and*ngo stereotype), “watering the Africans” and much more were made to me and other people regularly enough to be normal or at the very least, were seen as a bit of a cheeky thing to say. And despite being a multicultural country, Asian people were still referred to as “Chinese”, Native Americans as “Indians” and Islamic women as “Penguins” as well.

But back on the topic. As the years went on, more and more protests against Black Pete gained attraction and by now parents started to use these protests as another reason to be against the change because “they are ruining it for the kids” White parents would also start to praise the word of their 1 black colleague/friend for being against the change as well.

When the topic started to become more prominent, people made the attempt to change the Black of a Black Pete to another colour. This created the short lived bizarre creation of Rainbow Pete. (also seen in the picture above)

Rainbow Pete was a very short lived idea and was considered weird by many. However, I personally do believe this was an important step in the transition. Rainbow Pete took the depersonalisation tied to Black Pete and quite literally, showed its true colours. It’s ehhh hard to explain what “A Pete” is in English. But growing up I never considered them as human, nor were they ever explained to me as ACTUALLY being human. They are just described as a Pete, and a Pete is all they are. They aren’t people who can have other jobs in Spain or can travel the world to find something else to do. They are a Pete, and therefore they will always be with Sinterklaas in Spain, making toys for us, giving us candy and then going back to Spain with Sinterklaas again.

And that’s why I think this odd colour change was so important. Because by making them green or blue or pink it properly showed how ALIEN Petes felt. Like a whole other species. It tied a certain uncomfortable environment to the depersonalisation and after it’s short lived appearance, Soot Smudge Pete was a much easier step to make

Soot Smudge Pete, or in Dutch known as Roetveeg Pete, is the most recent and most inclusive variant of the Petes. This Pete only requires a few dark smudges to mimic actual soot and can be played by all races.

in 2018/19 Soot Petes started to become more present in the official parades, which a lot of parents were rather disgusted about. I personally think this is the period in which a lot of people just straight up outed themselves as racist, actively being against “White Pete” and actively longing for the “Real Petes” to return. Even with these Petes slowly becoming more popular, it is still not safe for most people who are against Black Pete to discuss the matter with Pro Black Pete individuals in this time period. Pro Black Pete individuals (often family or coworkers) more often than not become very heated when the topic arises and I cannot say I’ve ever seen the same attitude from people who are against Black Pete.

Present Day

In 2020, thanks to the Black Lives Matter movement, it has become way more socially acceptable to support Soot Smudge Pete. Parents who are still Pro Black Pete are still vocally voicing their disgust every time Soot Petes are present instead of Black Petes and much like what happened to me back then, their opinions also seep through onto their children. With these people still present in Sinterklaas spaces it also sadly occurs they press their believes on Soot Petes by giving them too much soot and still giving them a black, curly wig.

However, with the way things are going right now and the positive, multicultural depiction present in the media, I believe we are finally on our way to a more positive environment for kids of all kinds of backgrounds!

Afterthoughts

This whole post sparked after I dealt with a nasty situation myself while playing a Soot Pete at my old Elementary school. I really wanted to play this role to tie a more positive view on Soot Petes with all the parents creating such a negative environment around the Sinterklaas times and thought I could take matters into my own hands. However, I was Sooted up by a Pro Black Pete mother and thus, nearly got as dark as my brown hair. (besides that I also have gender issues and despite the school knowing I’m called Josh, put me in a dress outfit,, but that’s a more personal issue) I was able to wipe most of it off by the time the kids came in, but not without sharing some discouraging words with my mother, who told me to “just suck it up”.

It’s really important to me for people to know how Bad stuff like that still is in this country and I just... don’t understand why people would still support Black Pete after all this time. These people are either friends, family, or just kind people I know and love who around November open their mouths to say the most vile things and create such a sour situation for everyone involved. And after Black Pete is proven to be racist time and time again, still supporting it... It makes me wonder if this has to do with pride more than anything.

No one wants to be called a racist, but is it really that hard to acknowledge some of the shit you said and did was just plain wrong to the point that you’re taking your opinion to new extremes and decide to die on a sinking ship..?

I’ve said racist things. I have compared the curly black hair of a Black Pete to black classmates. I have compared Black Pete to black classmates. I have joked about them not needing to be face painted to be just like Black Pete. I have made those connections and I’m ashamed I did. But you do what you can to deal with it and become better for those around you. You listen to black voices, support black artists and black businesses and become better as a person. We need to start acknowledging how much our society is actually structured to belittle and undervalue black people and you can’t do that when you’re THAT far up your own ass.

a messy explanation of things and unnecessary information about life lately

soooo... right. i’m sorry i haven’t really been around aside from popping in here and there, and that i’ve been taking longer than usual to reply to things / not replying to things at all. it’s NOT that i’m upset with anyone or trying to ignore / avoid anyone, and it’s not that i don’t care / don’t love talking to you (whomstever you may be) i love chatting with y’all and wish i could get myself to reply to things quicker but i do not control the me lmfao honestly my sleep has never had a schedule but in recent weeks it’s kinda been operating like there’s a lil gremlin in my head who spins a wheel and picks my sleeping times at random - and it’s either like.. two hours or most of a day. there hasn’t been a lot of in between so that’s a thing!!

also in a fun added mix of maybe sleep?, missing meds, being stuck in the house more often than not, and the FUCKING EVERYTHING happening in the world right now my mental health is... probably run by the same goblin that runs my sleep schedule lmao consistency whomst?? since the lockdown started the depression has of course been around more but actually, worse than that, is how my anxiety - and by extension: my ocd - have really amped up and i need y’all to know that the struggle is painfully real (and another thing that affects shit like my replies and writing. reading as well. fics have been kinda stressful and that should be illegal. who authorized this?) i don’t hate talking about it but i don’t really like it either?? especially like.. in depth. but i will say there has been crying, screaming, pain!, and i’ve acquired a few physical injuries.

ON A PERSONAL LEVEL - THE FULL LEVEL - THINGS.... are pretty great actually! i mean aside from the state of my fucking house e__e but Josh has been working from home for two (2) months now and it’s been really nice - people complaining about their partners being home?? can’t relate. yknow what?? i just might love that tall bastard even more from all this.fuck all y’all miserable fucks

we’ve been going out for drives and we’ve gone fishing and the only place i’ve gone too that’s re-opened is goodwill. because i require.. the shop. they do have a masks required rule! (at least at the one here) and, alongside that, the places we’ve gone that never closed (like grocery stores and the gas station and the hardware store) have social distancing rules and stuff in place which i love. can we keep social distancing after this is all over?? more things here in wisconsin are opening up and we might go to some. idk though. we also might not. either way its still a weird kind of exciting to see things opening back up?? even though i do think we’re not totally in the clear because most of our gov. sucks (our mayor tried to extend our stay-at-home order - keyword there is TRIED. we are the land of cheese, cows, and no fucking braincells for anyone)

having pets is obviously not a new thing for me but it’s still a thing. so it takes time and effort and energy and patience and love and a certain disregard for your own safety (claws. they really be as sharp as you think) so... it can be stressful, especially cuz we’ve had to keep them inside more as it gets hot out and something keeps breaking our porch screens (our cats are allowed onto our screened in porch or they can go out in a harness but we will never let them run free outside. fuck that noise) my bbies are all so cute and their personalities and idiosyncrasies are just... *chefs kiss* i love em and they’re definitely a part of what has made quarantine better

i’ve seen my mom a few times, like for my birthday and when she needed help moving Isaiah from one dorm to another and such, but that’s primarily been an option because she has become anti-mask and anti-stay-at-home-order. initially she wasn’t - she gave Isaiah and i fun lil masks since at that time trying to buy them would be impossible and she thought nothing of staying home - but i guess either as its dragged on or as she’s consumed her middle-right wing news that changed s o. she does take social distancing in public very seriously though, so at least there’s that. our favorite coffee shop, where we - pre-lockdown - always went one (1) or two (2) times a week to do art for hours re-opens on monday and that’s one of the few things i’ve truly missed.

josh’s camping trip for this weekend with his friends had to be cancelled because the parks weren’t going to open in time. so today they’re going somewhere to do at least some of the things they would have done if they had gone camping. bikes, bonfires, and cigars. i’m kinda jealous negl but he was really excited about it so mostly i’m happy

trying to figure out how human services was running things during lockdown was rough but thankfully it didn’t take much to get it sorted. mostly because my mom made the phone call i was supposed to lol (the phone anxiety is on its own level) so wednesday afternoon my mom sat with me while i had the appointment with my psychiatrist over speakerphone (which was.. an experience)

ummm.....

OH YEAH! Probably absolutely my favorite thing that’s happened is: WE’RE STARTING THE SEARCH FOR A NEW HOUSE!!!! it doesn’t mean we’re gonna be moving soon or anything, we don’t want to make the same mistake twice (buying the first house you tour that you love) because while it is a great house ultimately it is way too small for us. i mean there’s me and josh, all six cats, and ALL OUR SHIT. listen: i have an entire room dedicated to my various hobbies. and a walk in closet that isn’t big enough. and we both have collections we love and want to display (right now upstairs its hello kitty and downstairs its astronomy and the titanic. and then there’s pop figures, mtg, collectibles, our bottle collection and various knickknacks, etc.) plus all our books! then furniture and cat furniture (i.e towers) and all their shit because they are spoiled babies. and god forbid we ever have a human kid?? yeah. it’s just not big enough.

so we’re gonna take more time with this choice but what we do know is:: we wanna live out in the country (i’m paranoid and don’t like to be looked at and he loves the outdoors, lived on a farm for awhile. i also enjoy the outdoors but mostly since we moved into this house i’ve struggled with doing anything outside... while we only have one neighbor on our road. but there’s one across the road and one at the other side of our backyard and that’s just too much lol)

lets see.. um.... my birthday was may 2nd and that was pretty nice, for a pandemic birthday. there’s been a lot of stuff happening involving josh’s family but that’s not something i really wanna get into on here, tho i will say things have been better in recent weeks and it’s been... really nice. josh and i went to his mom’s house the other night and got drunk with her for fun and i actually had a really good time?? and didn’t complain about going?? that’s kinda unheard of.

i don’t have a job anymore - haven’t since early march-ish - and it kinda sucks but also the universe really did me a solid because my choices were either allow myself to work until i have a mental break again or quit. and i was leaning towards quitting (things had been going down hill with the owner and other employees and just the business as a whole for awhile and there’s a limit to the amount of bullshit i can take thanks) but now it doesn’t seem i have to. why do i think i’m jobless? i was barely working anyway, bc of the snow business was slow, and in march i got really sick and stayed home for a week. the day i was supposed to go back i was still sick, and covid19 was starting to become more of a serious situation everywhere, so josh called in for me and explained that between still being sick and my anxiety over covid (asthma + a not so great immune system) i wasn’t going in that day. i never heard from them again. so.

but it’s all good - there are some options but i’m not looking into them seriously until it’s safe to.

i felt it wouldn’t be a bad idea to come on here and explain A. what’s been going on and B. where i’ve been and C. that if i haven’t responded to you or acknowledged something you sent me / tagged me in it’s literally just because i either forgot to (for all reasons and none) or i don’t have the mental space / energy to. but that doesn’t mean you have to stop talking to me! even if i don’t respond or respond immediately i do read everything and i would die for any one of you fuckers (especially my clowns and the tom hardy movie)

oh! and just btw - sometimes i don’t get notifications (quelle surprise) tumblr and skype should really pair up and talk about their truly great systems that function so well /s 8| ANYWAY: the best and most reliable ways to get my attention are twitter ( @/mieczyhale) and discord (same name) because i have yet to see their notifications fail. ahem.

i feel like i’m missing things / forgetting things but honestly this post is long enough and also enough of a rambley mess that i’m just gonna try and ignore that feeling and carry on with my goddamn day so i might actually accomplish something. sorry if there’s spelling off or missing words. i’m not taking the time to re-read this and might even delete it bc it’s already giving me anxiety bUT WE’LL SEE ALRIGHT HI AND BYE I LOVE YOU GUYS <3

Thank you for the last! ♥ I agree that social media is a shitty mess. Everyone is always poking their nose in and spreading gossip. This is so wrong, tedious, and terrifying. I have never tried to spread this kind of information or be a terrible villain, so I don't understand these people. Of course, we are all people and everyone has this very bubble, which is our refuge and no one has the right to personally go over these borders. But the way the world and society work in it, everyone has a mouth from which information and discussion of something flows. Not a judgment, but a discussion. So I always try to be honest about what I think, even if it's not about my personal life or fiction. I don't find anything wrong with communicating knowing these boundaries of the bubble.

As long as you talk about something and give an abstract assessment of it, without coming face to face with someone and not judging them, I think you have the right to do so. You have the right to talk about anyone and everything you want without getting personal. And so, if you're asking my personal opinion, of course, I don't know shit about two people than their creators aka mom and dad, or relatives and friends, but I, like anyone, have the right to assume and imagine without imposing it on anyone. And before someone comes out now and yells that I don't have the right, because it's none of my business, I agree, but I'm a living person and I'm a reasonable person who has a brain and can think processing any information. We are people and we tend to think and consider in our own way, we tend to believe in any phenomenon and even about strangers as well as about any other event like a boy who threw himself under a train, I will think why he did it and i will talk about it but it won't be a speculation, because this is how a person and his cerebellum with other hemispheres of the brain are arranged.

Consider that this is my nonsense out loud, and that I am evil, although I am not, but I will express an opinion. As you have already understood from my previous posts and reblogs, I really think and support the theory that these two are obviously in the state of break up. Whatever it is, no matter how anyone thinks, there are things that even a child will add up and understand that there are problems. Of course, we do not see what is happening on the other side of the screen, but we see how all this is reflected on social media. And I don't want to make you think in a certain way about why and how, it's not a 'What? Where? When?' game, of course, you can think your own way, but I just want to say that in my humble opinion and feeling they are separated and were coming to this recently. Not for a couple of days, but for weeks or months. Gradually there was something they were coping with (and you may think I am stupid, but I'm not blind and I saw that there was a lull, their former openness became more and more private, more and more distinct, especially after the new year and when Cole often went back and forth), and this is that most couple do, maybe serious decisions had to be made, and probably one of them wasn't ready for some reason, or some of them wasn't pleased with other's decisions, or someone wasn't pleased with another being so out of town, maybe, maybe, maybe, a lot of maybe, what leaded to a period when they needed to sort thing out and turned out they did it separately even if they were close in the same city. Simply, obviously, in case with all the coincidences, the situation in the country, the mental state of both, hurting experiences over a favorite pet, rumors, which is probably what I think Lili believed in, and I think so not just for no reason, but in connection with many actions in social networks and due to the fact that it happened after this sensational wave, and even if it was not one of the reasons, then of course there was another point, which broke out a quarrel or sorta and later the situation worsened and the 'system' finally died. No one says who or what provoked it for sure and who is right or wrong here. One thing is for sure - Cole didn't commit cheating, he denied it himself. No one knows why in detail and it is not necessary, no one knows if it will be able to get better, but at the moment it is dead. At the moment, this is the case.

Again, not a speculation, these are just my imaginations and points about the sequence of events based on very obvious actions and on the other person's full detailed logical explanation.This is what I stick to in my head.

Your recent (and fabulous) meta masterposts reminded me I wanted to ask you for advice in linking other people's meta to your own meta, specifically: is there any sort of etiquette when linking meta that isn't yours, particularly if you've never really talked to the original writer before, and the meta you are writing can be viewed as wanky/not a popular topic of discussion in fandom? Is tagging them optional or an unspoken rule? I would like to avoid stepping on anyone's toes ifpossible Thnx!

I’ve had it hammered into me to always cite sources, and I think that is true in fandom with meta. I do see it as a body of academic work, if very loosely and conversationally. Like… rogue academia being accessed by everyone. End result is still an enormous collection of written work. And in that case you should show fair and square what you’re talking about if you’re staring a new post and not replying. I think linking is always important unless you’re at the most grumbly dotposting vagueblog part of complaining about wank. (I complain about wank this way a lot as a way to vent and show I know about something going around fandom and here’s my 1 line opinion but I don’t wanna get involved :P)

I think it’s very contextual about tagging people in meta though… If they seem open to discussion and their original post was low-wank for the subject (e.g. not screeching about something, or showing obvious angry feelings you’ll never overcome such as character or writer hate that the root causes are too deep to rationalise with in 1 post about what is just a tangential topic to the wank) then I would tag. I’d link to say this is informing my own post and I’m not arguing or tearing things down. I think a lot of the problem in fandom is people assume if you post a reply, it’s, well… a riposte or something.

I got caught out by it recently replying in the bubble under a post I saw on my dash in the SPN meta tag - the reply I got was assuming I was attacking and defending, while I’d read their tone as quite mild and not hate-filled, so I offered an insight on the thing in the spirit of cross-fandom unity, and was surprised to realise they thought I was defending, which drastically altered my tone into seeming to suggest all sorts of things I hadn’t meant or considered… I forget that no matter how many smilies you cram in to try and look friendly, if people are on the defence from certain things, there is no way to project your chill personality into their life >.>

(I am now aware I’m vagueblogging but I plagued that poor person’s replies way too much trying probably unsuccessfully to clear up that confusion that I am super chill and read critical meta all the time as a hobby without taking personal offence, and at this point I’m too embarrassed to go back or tag them here :P)

Another thing is if you link their meta, try not to make your meta look like a point by point tear down, but just something informing your thoughts - if you break down every reason you think they’re wrong, it’s going to look rude if you tag them or don’t tag them, no matter how chill you try to be. I try to do this sort of thing by explaining my point of view on a thing by going back to the start and offering my own explanation for the situation or analysis based on things I think, and it’s okay to leave out parts of their stuff you don’t agree with if you can’t weave it into your positive explanation.

I also try really really hard to address all things positively - start as many meta posts as I can with “I love” or “this interests me” or “I would enjoy conversation on this” or other phrases to try and convey you’re making something constructive and for your own enjoyment, or reply to asks with positive affirmations about what they say even if you have some other contrary thoughts. Introduce contrary meta only after putting a positive buffer in rather than introducing like “I have some shit to say” :P Talk up whatever you can that you agree with and makes positive ground, and try to see the other side first before explaining your own… The old Here’s Argument A, I think Argument B, here’s my conclusion which concedes all interpretations are valid but I do still like B better and it fits into my world view more neatly. That sort of thing. I mean I’m not consistently good at this because when I’m tired or grumpy structure goes out the window (sentence, paragraph and essay :P), but when I try and put my thinking cap on, full positivity about everything is my watch word.

Anyway if you try to make your own post as gentle as possible towards the wank, it means tagging someone in it can more clearly be seen as a courtesy towards crediting their idea and offering another opinion which you can clarify you know this is what they think and you’re not demanding they change their mind, but here’s my post about it, thanks for the step up with your post :P

But yeah, I am a bundle of social anxiety so I tend to tag probably less than I should. That meta post I nearly sweated myself dry worrying if I should tag the OP of the other bi dean masterpost (I did in the end) because I’ve never talked to them, and it did look like stepping on their toes, even though it was something I’ve meant to do for ages, and was fundamentally different to theirs by having a lot of meta back and forth and collections of wide-ranging essays rather than a join the dots through canon like theirs, which is a much easier post to show people for the specific answer to “why do you think Dean is bi” rather than collecting up what I’m interested in fandom… *and that one wasn’t even at all wanky* :P

ANYWAY I think it is rude to link or mention someone’s meta and then do a tear down. I think it’s rude to tag someone when you’re mostly just complaining about their post or only writing to disagree with their concept, and I think it’s pointless to tag anyone who looks like they’re just snap back or block you. I *don’t* think that you shouldn’t ever tag someone you disagree with, as long as you can be constructive and kind. I’ve seen untagged posts with meta disagreements that could have been perfectly civil and not rude IF they’d tagged, because the actual content of both posts seemed to be a fairly constructive discussion, if only they’d been courteous to why they were writing their counter. Of course discovering you’ve been vagueblogged at is never fun and it turns you into the strawman or object of ridicule. I think tagging someone and knowing there’s a full chance they’ll read what you say even if they will disagree SHOULD be a good incentive to write politely and civilly but then on the wide internet that is not a very common courtesy >.>

(I think it’s excellent that you asked btw… We need more discussions on fandom courtesy.)

(And of course I’m 100% open to people replying or tagging me in discussing whether I’m right or some of this is rude in practice or whatever. :P)

My friend says that you just get a ticket and they might suspend the registration but they can't arrest you because its not a crime. Is this right? I just passed my test yesterday. I have a Vauxhall Corsa active 16V 1.2 2004(3 Door). I asked my friends who have recently passed how much they got on their insurance. One of my friends got 1100 on a 9month deal (Direct Line) on their 2009 VW Golf. And another one of my friends also on direct line got 1300 on their Ford Fiesta (X reg). When I come to get my quote they range from 1900-3000!! I've added near enough the same details. Mother main driver, fully comp all that. So I want to know is what is it that's allows them to get cheaper car insurance? Or is there something I'm doing wrong? Perhaps suggest another insurance company (I've looked at most).
