THEY LIVE BY NIGHT (1948)
"Cathy was very different from anyone I had ever met. She was lovely, shy, wistful, and ethereal. I felt an instant urge to protect her." - Farley Granger on Cathy O'Donnell

Farley Granger always playing the most tormented man possible that just happens to get wrapped up in murder against his better judgment/wishes

They Live by Night (Nicholas Ray, 1948)
Memories of the first time i saw this, second in a double bill with Gun Crazy, and turning to my date during the drive after the wedding scene, her head asleep on my shoulder as Bowie's was on Keechie's. That feeling then and there. And she remaining asleep throughout the next hour as the highest, most tender love soared and crashed on screen, waking up when the cinema lights went on and i'd sufficiently recovered from the ending. 15-ish years later, still together and now with a home and a little one. No one needs to know this. Just background to say even though this movie is self-evidently great and one of the most romantic items ever produced, it holds a lot of power for me. One of those things i never feel prepared enough to rewatch.
