Why didn’t the Edmonton Oilers CEO learn from the Stars catastrophe earlier in the season? Insulting your players in public is not the thing to do. Tobi Rieder is not responsible for your team not making the playoffs. Yeah it would have been nice for him to score some goals this year but he’s not solely responsible for the Oilers not making the playoffs. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that you don’t have anyone to play with your top three players. It makes you look bad and it makes the organization look even worse then it already does.

When Eliot’s talking to Nate about how he met Toby (his chef mentor) in The French Connection Job, they have this little exchange:
Eliot: I was out of the service, and I was working for my second PMC. And the jobs we were taking were way across the line - past extractions and security actions.
Nate: Wetwork.
Eliot: Yeah. Anyway, I met Toby…
And Eliot continues on with the story.
And this right here? I know I don’t love Nate the way I love the OT3, but that doesn’t change the fact that Nate is a very important member of the group, and very good for this band of elite criminal misfits on a personal level.
Because when Eliot is trying to explain to Nate something of why Toby means so much to him, he comes right up to the line that he hates himself for having crossed, and leaves the implication there.
Any of the others would have understood what he meant, and felt for Eliot, and probably they could just leave it unsaid and move on. And Eliot needs that, of course; he needs the care and compassion and heartfelt acceptance.
But Nate names it, acknowledges it, matter of fact. Like Eliot’s just told him it’s Tuesday.
Because this is not news to Nate. He’s the one who knew who all of these people were going in. He didn’t know all the gory details, maybe, but he had a pretty good sense of them, and his whole Thing is knowing who a person is at heart, what drives them and what they’re capable of.
Eliot is, canonically, capable of doing Very Bad Things for the payout. Sure, sometimes there’s more going on there, more complex motivations, but he has absolutely, 100% killed people for the money. That is not up for debate. Whether or not he wants to be that guy, he is that guy.
And Nate’s response to Eliot’s implied admission completely dissolves Eliot’s anxiety about admitting his past. Nate doesn’t trivialize it, his face and voice are serious, but he treats it like any other bit of potentially meaningful information. Like Parker’s just told him the safe is a Glenn-Rieder 2400. Yes Eliot, you used to kill people for money. Understood; I get where you’re coming from. Now where do you want to go with this?
Look at Eliot’s face as he talks about doing jobs that were “way across the line.”

Now look at his face after Nate says “Wetwork.” He’s not worried anymore.
Tumblr media
With the others, as Eliot tentatively reveals pieces of himself, I get the impression that he thinks they see him as better than he is, and he doesn’t want to ruin that. With Nate, Eliot is able to believe that he’s seen for exactly who he is, and that who he is is exactly who he needs to be.
This is what Nate brings to the table. He’s the mastermind. He knows people better than they know themselves. He manipulates and uses people, the marks but also sometimes his crew, and he can be an absolute bastard about it. But Nate’s particular skill is in seeing what’s there and seeing how that can get him closer to his goal. So when Nate sees these criminals and says they can do good, it’s not because he’s on a crusade to change them. It’s because he sees who they are, and how their particular histories and talents can be used to make the world a better place. And in doing that, he lets them see themselves in a different way.
It doesn’t erase anything they’ve done. But Nate’s blasé acceptance of Eliot’s past is powerful here because Nate is the mastermind and he doesn’t see a single reason why Eliot being a killer should prevent him from doing good in the here and now. It’s not a contradiction. And that is what allows his crew to grow and change.
When Nate names without judgment the thing that Eliot doesn’t quite want to admit about himself, it lets Eliot acknowledge it too, and then move on.
“Yeah. Anyway…”

possible unpopular hockey opinion but I’m mad the Oilers got Tobias Rieder back after they GAVE HIM TO US IN THE FIRST PLACE bc they didn’t wanna call him up to stay or whatever the fuck was going on then.
what kills me is the comments from Oilers fans beforehand like “we need a forward like Tobias Rieder!” LIKE. WHAT. YOU HAD HIM. YOU GAVE HIM AWAY. WHAT THE FUCK??!
Anyway y’all I miss Tobi and I’m mad he’s stuck with the Oilers again and that is all.
