Kung Fu Panda Legends of Awesomeness - "Father Crime"

Episode 21 Season 1

Synopsis:

When Shifu's father Shirong returns to the Jade Palace, Po thinks the family reunion will be so sweet. He soon learns that Shifu and his father don't get along.

Characters:

Kung Fu Panda is a franchise that is well known for tackling the subject of daddy issues and father-son relationships in general.

Master Shifu is very cold to his father, understandably so. The way how he talks about Shirong to his students like he's not even there. Or rather, he specifically speaks this way to get back at his father. It's not just bitterness and anger talking. He truly knows his father. The flicker of hope in his eyes when he saw the picture, the hurt when his predictions were confirmed, when his father came back, and them saying goodbye to one another. It was a roller-coaster of emotions.

Po is very invested in their relationship. In his fanboy fashion, he wants to know all the details about his master. When he learns about how complicated things are he tries to help. Po has a very strong bond with his father Ping, and master Shifu is like a father figure to him, so obviously he wants them to make up.

I think I got my wish. In the previous episode, I noted how the Furious Five tend to just blindly follow the master. Tigress did what she thought was right. She knows Shifu, he doesn't say it but if something bad actually happened to his dad or worst, died, Shifu would feel guilty.

By the way, the whole sequence with Po going to save Shirong only to run into Tigress who's doing the same thing and then switching to Shifu saving his father is phenomenal. It's ''subverting expectations'' in the best of ways, not like movies today where they lie to the audience. It's a great setup and pay-off.

This episode is my favorite so far. In the beginning, the series was just a Saturday morning cartoon with morals for the kiddies. The last couple of episodes are a non-stop study and expansion of characters from the movie and introduced in the show. Now let's hope the winning streak keeps going.

Villains: Fung and the Croc Bandits are still working for Tong Fo. They want to hammer home hoe creepy Tong Fo is with his eyes and getting up in peoples  faces, but I think he could be a lot creepier. He was scary when he started listing all the horrible stuff he’ll do with Shifu and intimidating Shirong.

i've been thinking about beyond ascension again, since i've been rereading. like most of the other things i posted more than a year ago, thinking about it is incredibly embarrassing. but objectively i know i'm happy with it. posting things just has a way of making them seem cringe. anyway i still find it funny that i watched this terrible show, became irremediably gripped by these terrible villains, wrote this entire thing, and completely totally forgot temutai existed. sorry. that guy can just stay unredeemed.

A/N: This piece is a bit more worldbuilding-heavy than the others I’ve done! I enjoyed writing it though, so I hope you like it too!

A paper marriage in Belobog isn’t the only way to show off the love between a couple.

According to the laws of Belobog, a marriage would have to pass through the Bureau of Civil Affairs in the administrative district before it could become official. But as history would have it, those in high places would often ignore the needs of those below. The Underworlders of Belobog, fed up with having their marriage requests delayed or even outright denied, came up with their own ceremonies to acknowledge the love between couples in their community.

A traditional Belobogian Undergrounder’s wedding consists of preparing and seasoning an olm frog, roasting it over Geomarrow ores, and sharing the meal in the heart of town.

“I don’t think this is what anyone had in mind when they said to prepare the olm,” you laughed, shaking your head.

Your boyfriend and soon-to-be husband Luka grins at you. “What, you’ve never seen a frog wear a hat before? Expand your mind, sweetheart! This is gonna be the prettiest roasted olm Boulder Town has ever seen.”

In his hands is the main ingredient to a traditional Belobogian miners’ dish- an olm frog. He fiddles with a napkin, folding it into a cap to put on the amphibian’s head.

“Well, he certainly is a handsome olm,” you concede with a fond grin. You lift it up, surveying Luka’s work. Despite the seeming unwieldiness of his mechanical arm, Luka had been able to fold the napkin into surprisingly neat creases, balancing it delicately on the frog’s head. “Still, he’s not as handsome as my fiancé here.”

“Awww, you flatter me~”

A gag from behind you interrupts the sweet moment. Seele and Natasha stand a little ways back, the former holding tongs and turning pieces of geomarrow ore in the stove, keeping it red-hot. “Get a room,” she gags, “You two are sweet enough to make me barf.”

“What Seele means is that it’s good to see the two of you so in love,” Natasha adds, with a meaningful glance towards her adopted daughter. “But we shouldn’t keep your guests waiting. The other dishes are already done- only the olm is left.”

“Sorry, Natasha,” Luka apologized, but it was clear that he wasn’t abashed in the slightest.

“No worries,” Natasha replied. She smiled warmly at the two of you. “I don’t think anyone would blame you for wanting to drag on the festivities for a little while longer. Goodness knows we’ve had little else to celebrate since the blockade”

The four of you were silent for a moment. The halt of trade and transport between the overworld and underworld was a touchy spot for Underworlders- some of them wanted to maintain their pride and wait it out, while others proposed they fight back against the tyranny of the Supreme Guardian in the streets above. The divide caused a lot of trouble for Wildfire, who struggled to keep the peace between two sides.

“… It feels selfish to be celebrating in a time like this,” you admit self-consciously, breaking the silence. “There’s so much else to be thinking about; to be fighting for. But here we are, taking up Wildfire’s time for something that isn’t official business.”

Luka nods, echoing the sentiment. “It feels a bit weird to be off duty for the first time in months. I hope it’s not too much trouble for you.”

“Of course it isn’t!” Seele shakes her head. “We wanted to be here for you guys. Don’t get all sappy on us now, just because we’re being nice.”

“Everyone was so excited for you guys when they heard the news,” Natasha confirms. She takes the tongs from Seele, turning over the geomarrow in the belly of the stove. “Wildfire takes care of our own. And besides, it isn’t just for the both of you. Morale has been high ever since the planning began. It’s good for everyone to see that life goes on, even when times are hard.”

Between Seele’s fierce encouragement and Natasha’s kind words, it’s hard to stay doubtful. “Thank you, both of you,” you say to them, and you mean it.

“Gather round, everyone! Master Oleg would like to say a few words.”

The settling murmur of guests around you roils in your belly as you sit at a table set up in Boulder Town’s square. Luka is lounging beside you with his normal arm flung over your shoulder. The roasted olm rests on the table between you, no longer sizzling hot but still pleasantly warm.

“How much longer before we eat? I’m starving,” he whispers to you with a grin. You nudge him back, shushing him as Oleg begins to speak.

“I’ll try to keep this short, seeing as the groom is getting a little impatient.” He shoots a smile at Luka, then coughs once before clearing his throat. “It’s great to see you all here today, in support of two of our dearest members of Wildfire. There’s a lot to be said about the state of the Underground right now-“ Oleg waits for the murmurs to pass through the crowd to continue. “But I think it’s safe to say that this union between our happy couple is proof that life goes on, both on the surface of Belobog and below. No matter the circumstances, we will find ways to thrive.”

Oleg nods to you. “On behalf of Wildfire and the entire Underground, we wish you two a happy and loving marriage.”

That’s your cue. Picking up the fork from beside the roasted dish, you use it to tear a piece of juicy meat from the side of the olm and hold it out to Luka. He grins and does the same with his own fork. You exchange them, taking the bites off of each others’ utensils- sharing your first meal in the town square, just as couples did for hundreds of years before you. The crowd erupts in whistles and cheers- and just like that, you’re forever bonded to the love of your life. Luka pulls you in for a kiss and you reciprocate, smiling into his lips as he leans his forehead against yours.

Roasted olm is said to taste like chicken, but there’s no way for you to make that comparison. After all, as an Underworlder you’ve spent your entire life by the glow of a Geomarrow furnace. You didn’t have the luxury of the sun or the sky or a grand Overworlder’s wedding. But today has proven that you don’t need any of that to thrive- or to love.

Taking your new husband’s hand in yours, you look around at the people surrounding you. Miners and their families, Natasha, Seele, Oleg and the members of Wildfire, residents of Boulder Town, Hook and the Moles- and of course, Luka.

“There’s more than enough food here for everyone. Please, join us! Let’s eat!”

It’s About the Magic

The thing is- it’s about magic.

One doesn’t get assigned their living arrangements for the following seven years based on how cunning or humble or bold they are - maybe that affects what friends they make, what teachers they endear themselves to, but the power woven into that Sorting Hat doesn’t look only at mere surface personality traits. It looks at the magic. More specifically, it looks at what each child thinks about their magic.

Rowena Ravenclaw wanted students who asked questions in her House. Children who looked at the awe of magic, the wonder in it, the mysteries and discoveries and far horizons. Whether they sought answers in books or out in the fields and hills, she wanted to teach and guide those who considered magic a source of inspiration, a quest to be embarked upon. To simplify her fledgling eagles as the ‘smart’ students, dismissed as merely being good at memorizing information with no more nuance to their minds, is an insult to the pursuit of magical knowledge.

Godric Gryffindor wielded his power as one would a mighty tool, and preferred pupils who desired the same, those who sought to better equip themselves. Sword and shield, needle and thread, hammer and tongs: it mattered not what end goal each student pursued, what skills they sought to perfect or deeds they dreamed to achieve. Only that they should strive to master their magic, to best apply it to the challenges ahead. Perhaps ‘bravery’ is an apt thing for young cubs to strive towards, but lions are made of more than courage alone.

Helga Hufflepuff considered the bounties of her efforts to be a great gift, and that gifts became all the more valuable when shared with others. That it did not matter what else a child could or could not claim to be, so long as they remained generous in both mind and spirit, turning the strength of one into the strength of many. With magic, food, money, and all such things that could ease a difficult task. To lend a hand in times of hardship is to see prosperity for all when the good times return, and to call her little badgers mere ‘duffers’ would be the height of folly.

Salazar Slytherin saw his magic to be a privilege, a responsibility, something he and his fellow practitioners were meant to shelter and protect. Children of magic, especially, were meant to be safeguarded, from threats both within and without. Authority, ranks, prestige - all of it came from being able to grow up in the first place, to be able to practice in safety, and learn from wiser and older minds who’d surpassed their own trials and tribulations. This is the first lesson taught to his ‘cowardly’ snakes: that in order to become magically strong, one with magic must first survive.

(If a threat had ever truly come to Hogwarts Castle, Godric would have rallied the defenses, Rowena’s protective enchantments at his back. It was Helga’s task to evacuate or else hide away the students, to keep them from harm, while Salazar’s duty was to awaken the method of last resort, the final protector capable of defeating any enemy who looked upon it. The four of them knew this. Their immediate successors knew it as well, and those who came next, but over time- well. Over time, the exact details of their duties became muddled, or lost outright. Legend eventually overtook fact, as disgruntlement and disagreements outstripped logic, and everyone forgot about the basilisk safely tucked away in case the worst ever occurred.)

But HECK if I can actually find the dang thing, because of course the relevant analysis was in a reblog rather than the main post.

Richard was an educated man who composed poetry, writing in French and Limousin. He was said to be very attractive; his hair was between red and blond, and he was light-eyed with a pale complexion. He was apparently of above average height, but as his remains have been lost since at least the French Revolution, his exact height is unknown.

Boswell's translation of King Henry II's journal records that Richard (then the Duke of Aquitaine) "remained with Philip, the king of France, who so honored him for so long that they ate every day at the same table and from the same dish, and at night their beds did not separate them. And the king of France loved him as his own soul; and they loved each other so much that the king of England was absolutely astonished at the passionate love between them and marveled at it."

Before 1948, no historian appears to have clearly affirmed that Richard was homosexual. Historian Jean Flori, however, has analysed the work of contemporary historians, and reported that they quite generally accepted that Richard was homosexual. However, not all historians agree regarding Richard's sexuality; but Flori analyzed the available contemporaneous evidence in great detail, and concluded that Richard's two public confessions and penitences (in 1191 and 1195) must have referred to the "sin of sodomy". There are contemporaneous accounts of Richard's relations with women, and Richard acknowledged one illegitimate son, Philip of Cognac. Flori thus concludes that Richard was probably bisexual, but he does agree that the contemporaneous accounts do not support the allegation that Richard had a homosexual relation with King Philip II of France.

The historian John Gillingham has suggested that theories that Richard was homosexual probably stemmed from an official record announcing that, as a symbol of unity between the two countries, the kings of France and England had slept overnight in the same bed. He expressed the view that this was "an accepted political act, nothing sexual about it; ... a bit like a modern-day photo opportunity."

Richard did later marry somewhat unenthusiastically. Upon death his widow had to sue the pope for recognition as widow, as Richard hadn't bothered to make his marriage official.

Matlovich is also famous for his statement, which is also the epitaph on his gravestone in Washington, DC's Congressional Cemetery, "When I was in the military they gave me a medal for killing two men and a discharge for loving one."

Kung Fu Panda Legends of Awesomeness - "Jailhouse Panda"

Episode 17 Season 1

Synopsis:

Po goes undercover as a prisoner in Chor-Ghom Prison to learn where a diabolical criminal named Tong Fo has hidden the ultra-dangerous weapon called the Sacred War Hammer of Lei Lang.

Characters: Tigress and Monkey are on a mission, Crane is out shopping, Viper is shedding her skin and Mantis is on a patrol. Shifu doesn't want to send Po on a mission because he thinks the panda lacks the needed skills. And he's partly right. I believe that Master Shifu would observe how his student is doing only to jump in when need be. The second stone was set up at the beginning, so it doesn't come out of nowhere. Po using the crocodiles and then letting them go might be a nitpick. But he had more urgent matters at hand and he couldn't exactly arrest them and give them to the authorities in a criminal disguise. They got caught later anyway so no harm was done.

Monkey and Tigress are the ones to help fight Tong Fo because they were getting back from their mission. It's a nice detail that Monkey is the one to notice Po's voice and fighting style. Meanwhile, Tigress is more skeptical.

Po proving who he is by saying things only he would know was funny and wholesome.

Good episode!

Villains: Tong Fo has a gimmick, people are weirded out by his big eyes, and he clarifies his skull is just small. He’s a serviceable villain. Just not my favorite. Fung and the Croc Bandits were caught off screen. Po, in disguise, uses them to escape. They later return to help Tong Fo.  

I’m adding Tigress’s crush on Shifu to the list. Nothing ever come out of that. (Thank God!) But I’m still adding it.

i think i've had enough already, ang dami kong na-realize recently. all this time na feeling ko ako yung may problema, e hindi lang naman pala ako. sadyang toxic connection lang talaga. pwede rin ba ang karmic friendship? lol haha. after venting out to Rachel and Jasmine, parang tama yung naiisip ko na mag drift away nalang sa isang friend na 'to. FO kung FO haha.

binalikan ko kasi lahat ng pinagdaanan namin ng person na 'to, (hindi ko na babanggitin name niya) na ako lagi yung lumalabas na toxic, every time na may di pagkaka intindihan—well, it turns out, na mas toxic pala yung ganong behaviour niya coming from my friends na mas matagal na akong kilala. sila na rin mismo yung natritrigger sa mga nakwento ko. though pov ko yun syempre, mukha nga namang ako yung bida pero hindi ko naman din tinatanggi na minsan ako rin talaga yung mali.

KP would have one of the most amazing couples I’ve ever seen in BL dramas and then be like, no mikuni14, we have someone even better fo you to fall in love and it would be Tankhun :D I don’t know how they do this, like Kinn and Porsche are top notch, yet the show doesn’t just stop here and is serving us other wonderful characters. 

So far, Tankhun is my fav character from KP 🥳💖

Though I admit, currently the one I’m obssesed with is Vegas. His voice, his mannerism, how he carries himself, how he slays the look of lower, middle and high rank mobster :) how he was shown for example in his bike scene with Porsche (I loved, that camera never shown him being fake and calculating, he was the same all the time, even when Porsche was not looking, also he gave him his helmet and rode the bike not in a very safe manner, pretty reckless for a mafia heir). Also he is very dengerous and probably the only remaining character of KP with a truly dark side. Don’t know how much of this dark side we will see, I suppose he will turn out ... tamed and maybe even... nice. I know it’s a lot to ask for a Thai Moon Jo, so I don’t even bother :) Somehow I doubt they would let him be monster, that is just occasionally being nice. We more or less know now, what kind of people Kinn and Porsche are, so maybe I’m curious about Vegas, because I don’t have a whole picture of him, just some pieces, that don’t match at the moment. Btw. I know only drama Vegas, I haven’t read the books and I’m not going too.

I know it’s risky here, to admit liking Vegas :D But he is such a compelling character, like Hannibal, Moon Jo, half of the cast from Black Sails, Rome, Breakin Bad, Spartacus and many others. Like, I would punch Ilithia and Walter White in their dicks in real life, yet on screen they were a BOMB. 

Anyway, standing ovation for the actors for giving their absolute best, like for example Tong didn’t have to be the best possible Tankhun, and yet he is. THE. BEST.

If I hear this correctly, the proof is that the emission into the Identity Space becomes a pairing within that, and that emission is an Injection, which represents as a tangent space (or as an attached Identity Space which simplifies through Attachment Theory to a tangent point, line, plane, etc.). That Injection is Othogonal, meaning it has no direction other than into the Identity Space. The Identity Space only exists because it has been Infused, meaning that some sort of boundary has been at least sketched by defining the modularity, which means factoring, which means roots, which means inversion over an HG (which just popped into place and it’s lovely). So Infusion defines the overall potential AND the potential thus within any pairing that is defined in relation to that Infusion, while now we can see Injection doing the same thing the other way, from the ground up or inside out, as Things populate the Identity Space, where those Things are contained within whatever pairings are necessary to define them.

That last is beautiful. As many pairings as are necessary to define a Thing. Just look at how we’ve equated polygons with dimensions and that says we map a Thing n-dimensionally, meaning how Injection fits Infusion is dimensional. It occurs to me this is the notation which explains those repeating nested counts we’ve been dealing with for decades: they are Injection and Infusion or Infusion and Injection.

So, the basic idea is that the Identity Space is Infused and then Things generate within the Identity Space and within the pairings which fit to the boundaries of that Identity Space. This fits exactly to greater awareness increasing the pairings and thus the complexity of the Things. By literal count.

This has many consequences. The one under consideration has been that the externality is directionless: it always Infuses and Injects into the Identity Space, which means orthogonal. Consider it this way: an Identity Space sits as a gap between two prongs of a pair of tongs or of a wrench, so when you squeeze it to hold it, you only know up from down, side from side by how you choose to hold it, and all ‘into’ is the same ‘into’ with regard to what you are holding. Inside the Identity Space, there is direction because each pairing contains direction as part of its 1-0Segmenting, as part of its Laddering, which means ordering across its counts and thus its sets.

The next step took a minute to congeal as a vision but it seems to have become a version of ‘what’s good for the Identity Space’ begins with what’s good for a Thing but that changes as awareness increases, meaning as the pairings develop, meaning as the boundary of the Identity Space develops Ends which pair. That becomes a more collective action, which you see in primitive societies, like in herds that gather for defense and which may hunt together, with relations and types, etc. being limiting factors to the pairing potential. Note how this generates the oddball pairings we love to see. Those are terrific examples of Attachment Theory fitting pieces together.

This means the evil which results from awareness - I think of what Loki said, pointing out that their behavior was wrong - reflects the state of the Thing’s pairings within the Identity Space. And this draws people, pulls them, because it’s more easily attainable in the blunt dimensional sense that D3-4 is put together while D4-3 is taken apart to reach D3-4. This means a) the decomposition inherent in threading, in what we can now see clearly are identity statements (IS within an IS!) is in both, and b) it’s a lot easier to do that work than to put things together. It’s a lot easier to take things apart, to shake them and break them, than to construct. In fact, as humans demonstrate over and over, the act of destroying is taken to be one of the greatest acts of creation, whether that’s the Mongols destroying cities and killing everyone inside or destroying an existing business with new technology. The former is fairly obvious: make a mark by being the worst, by deconstructing the most Things. The latter is more about emphasis. As in, Craigslist didn’t so much destroy newspaper classified ads as it constructed a significantly better solution for users. What then stands out is the utterly inept response of the newspapers. So you can see the similarity: the urge to wreck is also the urge to make. Germany didn’t just murder for fun, though they clearly enjoyed the killing: they were telling themselves it was necessary to purify the land so they could have it for themselves or have it cared for by their subjects.
