Links to Pacific Rim creator Travis Beacham's own posts on drift compatibility and drifting
Drift compatibility is psychological, not genetic
The better you know someone, the more likely you are to be drift compatible
Drift compatibility is potential, not fate
Drift compatibility can be a choice
Friendship is the foundation of drift compatibility
The drift requires trust
Trust is fundamental; also drift compatibility can be determined with anything that tests how well you can anticipate each others' moves
That even includes multiplayer video games
Many cadets wash out during Pons training when secrets come out in the drift and shatter their relationships
A lot of pilots get messed up by flinching over sexual thoughts
Trying to avoid thoughts just makes them worse
Not everything you see in the drift is always real; also the way to deal with thoughts is just let them flow by
Pilots communicate through "headspace"
Illustration of a conversation in headspace
First drifts can be very confusing, because partners don't understand each others' minds very well yet
The drift exposes pilots to each others' raw, unfiltered thoughts
Raleigh knew what Yancy was going to say
The drift doesn't let you read your partner's mind like a database, and you may not necessarily understand what you see. Also when Pentecost says he carries nothing into the drift he means he's calm and stable.
Pentecost gained this calmness through meditation
Trying to block your partner from your mind will make you lose control of the Jaeger
Pilots who fall below 90% sync will be in trouble
General information plus info on RABITs
You can chase your partner's RABIT
Another post confirming you can chase your partner's RABIT
More RABIT info
More general information
Travis Beacham defines ghost drifting
Partners' personalities can rub off on each other
Neural overload doesn't hit you all at once; it accumulates
The time a pilot can go solo varies, and it's a steep curve from fine to dead
More info on solo piloting
Being high in the drift probably makes it harder to avoid chasing the RABIT

Drifting, as conceptualized by Travis Beacham
Back around 2013, Pacific Rim creator Travis Beacham answered a lot of questions about drifting on his blog. He evidently put a lot of thought into it, as he answered numerous questions with quite a lot of precision and detail. I'm not going to quote all of his words verbatim here; rather, I'm going to try and sum up what he said. For Beacham, trust is fundamental; potential partners must first and foremost trust each other in order to drift. Because your partner will be aware of whatever you are presently feeling and thinking (which can include anxieties, intrusive thoughts, and fantasies), you have to be able to trust your partner with that - otherwise, you won't be able to sync.
Beacham says that drift compatibility is merely potential; it doesn't ensure an actual bond between people. Developing a bond takes work and compromise, which is easier between people who already have established relationships. However, strangers with similar personality traits also have potential, and choice plays a role as well. Beacham states that he believes that Mako and Raleigh might have never been matched up by the PPDC, but that they matched themselves up by choosing to trust and care about each other. Beacham also says that genetics don't really play a role in drift compatibility - again, it's the psychological stuff that's important. He also clarifies that drifting doesn't allow people to find and view anything in their partner's mind as if it's a database - they're only able to see whatever they're currently thinking about. First drifts can be confusing for pilots, especially if they lack common memory reference points - it's difficult to work with someone who has an entirely different mental landscape from your own. The more familiar pilots become with each other's psyche, the easier it becomes. As pilots gain more familiarity with each others' minds, they become more efficient at communicating through the drift; spoken dialog is essentially just the tip of the iceberg in a conversation that is largely playing out through the drift. According to Beacham, this mental conversation can play out extremely quickly; he says that for experienced pilots it's essentially like pausing reality to have a conversation. He also says that new pilots are taught to "call" their moves in order to help them sync better. Experienced pilots will often continue to do it out of habit, as well as keep LOCCENT informed of what's happening. (And, presumably, to keep us in the audience informed of what's up, lol.) Beacham says that pilots can essentially exchange personality traits through the drift, though they will remain essentially themselves - in essence, it seems to work the same way that close friends or couples will inevitably rub off on each other. Beacham describes the RABIT as "a kind of drift-prompted dissociative episode." He also says that the RABIT can be a traumatic memory, but it can be literally any memory that overpowers you and pulls you out of awareness. Pilots can also chase the other person's RABIT just as easily as they can chase their own. In general, it's important that pilots don't get distracted by their own thoughts or their partner's thoughts, but instead allow them to wash over and pass by.
Drifting with an incompatible partner isn't likely to cause any damage, but it can be uncomfortable and confusing. Since pilots who aren't in sync won't have control over their jaeger, this would be disastrous in an actual fight. A jaeger can be piloted with a certain amount of dissonance between pilots, but things get risky once synchronization falls below 90%. Should one partner be pulled out of the drift, the other won't immediately go into neural overload. He says that it could happen in five minutes, or maybe twenty minutes - there's no real way to know. Additionally, neither Raleigh Becket nor Stacker Pentecost were unique in their ability to solo pilot a jaeger for a time; they were simply the only ones who ever had to. (It doesn't often happen that one pilot dies while the other survives.) Beacham also posted about ghost drifting, which he described as an persistent (albeit muted) link between partners that manifests as shared dreams. He says that it's rare, and that the mechanisms behind it have yet to be explained in-universe. So yeah, that's a summary of Travis Beacham's take on drifting. Personally, I enjoyed the way he thought this all through, especially in acknowledging that sharing a headspace with another person could go very wrong, and in coming up with ways to mitigate it. I also appreciate the way he grounded the whole thing in ways that track to how actual relationships function, rather than taking a more fantastical ~mystical fate~ kind of route that just... doesn't. Beacham's take on drifting could be summed up as "soulmates are made, not found," which is very appropriate for a story about broken people forging connections in broken world.

Raunch Review: Carnival Row
Raunch Review: Carnival Row
Raunch Reviews is a series about profanity. Not real profanity, but speculative swearing. Authors often try to incorporate original, innovative forms of profanity into our own fantastical works as a way to expand the worlds we build. Sometimes we’re successful. Often we’re not. In this series, I examine the faux-profanity from various works of sci-fi and fantasy, judge their effectiveness, and…

Remember, it's about compatibility. It's a dialogue, not a fight. But I'm not gonna dial down my moves. Okay. Then neither will I.
