i think i might revamp my lore a little bit. again. not that there's much to revamp but likeeeeeeeeeeee

#i think a lot about What Do Animals Do Better Than Robots #in general not just in regards to flight rising bc i do study a thing that animals specifically are able to do and not robots #i guess maybe that's one cool thing about hyper regenerating biological mechas.... they can just Keep Going #the idea of a mecha that just keeps growing back its limbs (just in a wrong way) after being damaged is soooo.... idk... it's sexy to me #and of course they would need fuel #i guess that would give a rationale for the deep tropical setting? way more biomass in general lol #but then like the ecosystem. lmfao #maybe they have some kind of bioengineered stomachs that can break down any kind of organic matter into energy/fuel for regenerating #something like that #idk #anyway i think human vs alien is way too pacific rim for me and i also like my worlds to be Painfully Mundane in some ways #i think it's funnier if biomechs are literally just like territory guard dogs that people use to duke it out over mining resources in caves #or something #idk maybe even the caves are where you can farm a very specific type of microorganism that produces some valuable byproduct #i love saying idk. and i love doing stupid biology shit in my lore ouguhghrhhghghh

One thing my brain keeps going back to about Pacific Rim (besides the rad giant robots) is the whole existence of kaiju organ harvesters and their implications.

Like, you have Hannibal Chau, a bizarre and interesting character, but we’re presented with a black market operation that seems mostly interested in the “alternative medicine” uses of kaiju parts.

But my brain demands to know: what does the corporate kaiju harvesting industry look like? Sure kaiju blood is toxic, but there are plenty of toxic materials that have useful applications. Are there chemical companies studying kaiju organs? Big-Pharma jumping on the kaiju bone-powder bandwagon? Are bio-tech firms studying kaiju hide to make tougher materials? Agribusinesses clamoring to acquire kaiju crap for fertilizer?

I’m picturing something like the age of whaling, when humans hunted giant animals and carved them up to feed insatiable industries. Whale-oil lighting lanterns for entire cities, whale-bone being used in everything from knick-knacks, tools, umbrellas, and corsets. Ambergris alone was used in perfumes, medicines, cooking. It was even added to wine as an aphrodisiac.

We glimpsed how kaiju affected pop-culture. Now picture a kaiju smashing a city, but the stock market going up for construction companies (rebuilding the cities), vulture real estate (buying the destroyed land cheap), and all the other corporations that profit from the systematic dismantling of a kaiju corpse and making money off of its parts. Sure, a city was roughed up and who knows how many thousands are dead, but it’s a better windfall when a kaiju makes landfall. It’s always less profitable when jaegers kill them too quickly; sea-based extractions are so much more expensive.

Imagine entire industries, entire economies that don’t just make money from the devastation of kaiju attacks, but grow dependent on them. And then the laws, the squabbles over those valuable, resource-rich kaiju corpses. If a kaiju attacks one country but keeps rampaging and is killed in the country next door, who has claim over the body? The party who was damaged more by it or the country where the corpse physically is? Bidding wars over “cleanup” contracts that cut corners and are only interested in collecting those sweet, sweet, kaiju parts as fast as possible, even if their official mandate is supposed to be the safe removal and cleanup of a toxic substance.

Once jaegers started getting efficient at killing kaiju, the people with all the money became less interested in solving the problem of kaiju attacks and switched to merely managing the industries that kaiju-killing feeds.

What? You want to put more resources into R&D to try and close the Breach? Whatever for? The kaiju comes out, jaegers kill it, and the “host country” gets the proceeds from the kaiju’s body. It’s a win-win for everyone. Why waste time, money, and effort solving a problem that isn’t a problem anymore?

Everything is under control.

Hopepunk Primer pt. 3

How to practice Hopepunk

Find joy in the small things. The flowers growing through concrete, the way the sunlight hits the grass. There is beauty and joy in the small things, but it takes a bit of training to find them. Mindfulness or a gratitude journal (or even a Tumblr sideblog) helps with this training. Hope can be learned, I promise.

Be a pebble. [8] Imagine a tall glass that is half-full with water. Imagine you are a crow. You try to drink the water but you can't reach, the glass is too deep. So you take a pebble and throw it in. The water level rises slightly. Other crows come in with pebbles, and with each pebble the water level rises until finally you all can drink from the glass. There is a lot of focus nowadays in activism circles to be aware of every horrible thing that is going on in the world and to work on each and every one of them. The tough reality is: we can't. We're only human and right now we are all very prone to burn-out. We can't bring change if we are burnt out or have compassion fatigue. So be a pebble. Stay small, perhaps even stay local. If everyone focuses on one thing and focuses their efforts and energy there, we will make it. We'll make the water rise so everyone can drink. Be a pebble.

Stop doom scrolling. It's ineffective and only serves to make us feel more hopeless and demoralized.

Be responsible for your own internet experience. This is related to doom scrolling. Unfollow people who make you feel hopeless and like the fight is useless. Block trolls and don't engage them. Find people who make you feel inspired, invigorated, hopeful. Blacklist tags, block, delete.

Look into hopepunk media. Be inspired by the stories told. Some examples are movires: Lord of the Rings, Mad Max: Fury Road, Pacific Rim. Series: Sense8, the Good Place, Star Trek. Books: Binti by Nnedi Okorafor, A conspiracy of truths by Alexandra Rowland, the Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. Music: Torches by X Ambassadors, This Yeah by the Mountain Goats, Be More Kind by Frank Turner.

Build/Find your Community. Share what you have, ask for what you need. We're in this together. If you grow your own fruits and vegetables share them with friends and neighbours. Exchange favours like doing a grocery run or offering to watch the kids for a night. Make a tiny library or give & take cabinet. Share skills and resources. This can be done both online and in person, but making a difference locally is easier with boots on the ground, so to speak.

Create. Live authentically. Do things just to do the thing. So much needs to be "content", these days. So much needs to be a "side hustle" or "monetized". Resist. Create because it makes you feel good. Because you want to. Create bad art, sing off key, swing your arms wildly and call it dancing, write edgy poetry, create Mary Sue self-inserts. Live.

Resist capitalism. Reuse, recycle, repair, thrift, make, trade, etc.

Vote. If you really want to make a difference get out there and vote. Especially in the US they do not want you so rebel and vote. Not just for the president. Voting locally for your representatives will have more of an influence.

Unionize. Alone you beg, together you negotiate. Only together can we make change

Spread hope. Do random acts of kindness, compliment people, share positive things that happened, spread love and joy where you go.

In the pacific rim au (note that I don’t know anything about pacific rim lol) Simon thinks that the 3 pilot thing doesn’t work cause of her so it further proves to him that she doesn’t belong there with him and he is horrible to her for it but after some time he realizes that HE is the problem

He’s the worst (I love him) a full on terror. Yells and berates you, tells Johnny this was clearly a waste of their time and resources, that you’ll never be his co-pilot, and storms off. Locks himself in their room for hours.

Behold! My pinned post!

Right now I am massively into Pacific Rim - specifically, the first movie and the adjacent comics and paratext. I'm deeply interested in the mystical, animist, fairy tale subtext underpinning del Toro and Beacham's worldbuilding, and the allegorical intentions behind the first movie.

I posted a bunch of resources over on kaijuposting.

I'm really not a fan of The Black and what it does with Pacific Rim.

I lean toward looking at media from a holistic, "what's the narrative saying?" point of view. I'm not a fan of approaching issues/possible issues in a story like an Evangelical pastor doing Bible apologetics in this context. Headcanons/mind caulk are wonderful for personal media enjoyment and transformative works, but terrible for meaningful media analysis.

I'm not a fan of reading every text as if it's written as a moral tract where we're supposed to agree with the protagonist or an obvious figure of authority. Some media is written like that. A lot of media isn't. Determining what a text is saying is more about examining the conclusions validated by the narratives than what the characters say and do.

Also if you project western Christian dualism onto stories written without that perspective (for example, the works of Guillermo del Toro), you're going to come away with a wonky reading, just saying.

Meet Tommy and Benny Harlow

Tommy (they/them): Electrical engineer and wannabe programmer

Benny (he/him): baker extraordinaire keeping Tendo supplied with bagels

I HC that the PPDC has a pen pap program where they encourage their employees to find someone at another shatterdome to write letters to in order to encourage camaraderie while they work to save the world

This is how these guys met. Tommy worked at the AK shatterdome and picked Benny from a list of randoms - begrudgingly, they thought it was a dumb, waste of resources, program. Benny worked at the Australian shatterdome and was shocked that anyone would pick a random baker to correspond with

They miraculously hit it off from letter two. Thus they embarked on their one 5 year passionate and fascinating letter romance. When resources were drastically cut they were both moved to the Hong Kong shatterdome. They got hitched not long after meeting IRL
