Ukraine wants to develop and buy fifth-generation poaching, and is not from the United States
Fernando Valduga
Ukraine has shown interest in investing in the development and also in the acquisition of a fifth-generation fighter, since its engineers are currently involved in the development of the poaching jet engine.
During an interview with CNN Türk on February 15, 2024, the Ukrainian ambassador to Turkey, Vasyl Bodnar, revealed that Ukraine expressed its intention to acquire and deploy the fifth-generation Turkish poacher Kaan (King). Ambassador Bodnar discussed the partnership, noting that this initiative is part of a broader collaboration, reflecting a history of defense and technological cooperation between Turkey and Ukraine.
To supply the Kaan jet engine, Ukrainian companies have established a consortium to compete with other global and Turkish companies.
Tumblr media
The collaboration in the Kaan engine between Ukraine and Turkey is described by Ambassador Bodnar as mutually beneficial. He mentioned the advantages of domestic production capacities, which aim to improve the global competitiveness of both nations. In addition, Bodnar suggested that the Kaan could be competitive with other advanced aircraft, such as the F-35 Lightning II and the F-22 Raptor. Ukraine's approach to the acquisition of Kaan jets is described by the ambassador as comprehensive, planning both the purchase and the effective deployment to improve national defense.
The Kaan fighter is part of Turkey's National Combat Aircraft program, which began in 2017, with the aim of improving the country's defense infrastructure. It was designed with the intention of surpassing the capabilities of American F-35 jets and is planned to replace the existing F-16 fighters of the Turkish Air Force. The program faced delays, with the initial flight of the Kaan prototype postponed from late December 2023 or early January 2024 to March, due to unspecified reasons that require more ground testing. Series production is scheduled to begin in 2028.
The TAI Kaan, initially referred to as TF-X or Turkish Fighter (TF) and also known as Milli Muharip Uçak (National Combat Aircraft), is being developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) with the assistance of BAE Systems. The project aims to create a bimotor, all-climate poacher of air superiority, to succeed the F-16 Fighting Falcons of the Turkish Air Force and to operate alongside contemporary aircraft such as the F-35 Lightning II, with potential for international sales.
Tumblr media
The project was started by the Executive Committee of the Defense Industry of Turkey on December 15, 2010, with the aim of developing a next-generation fighter. This led to an agreement in 2011 between the Undersecretary of Defence Industries of Turkey (now known as the Defense Industry Agency) and TAI, as well as TUSAS Engine Industries (TEI). TEI collaborates with the Ukrainian company Ivchenko Progress in the development of the Kaan engine since 2022. Initially, the Kaan will be equipped with General Electric F110 engines,
The Turkish company Aselsan is developing an advanced active electronic scanning radar for Kaan using gallium nitride technology. The aircraft's avionics aims to allow integration with unmanned aerial vehicles through secure data links.
The aircraft's armament is expected to include several air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles, along with different types of bombs to meet various mission requirements.

Turkish Aerospace Industries has signed a contract to deliver two Hurkus-C light trainer and combat aircraft to Niger and three to Chad, a senior company official said.
Atilla Dogan, TAI’s deputy general manager, told media that the firm will deliver the aircraft to Niger by the end of the year, and to Chad in the first quarter of 2023.[...]
industry sources say the price for a single Hurkus-C is about $40 million to $50 million.
The contract with Niger follows the sale of 12 Hurkus-B aircraft to the African nation under a deal signed in 2021. That was TAI’s first export contract for the combat trainer.
The latest deals enhance Hurkus-C’s penetration into the African market. In May, the Libyan Air Force signed an agreement with TAI for the acquisition of the Hurkus-C. No details were given on quantity or delivery timeline.
The Hurkus-C is a tandem two-seat, low-wing, single-engine, turboprop aircraft that can perform close ground support missions. It is able to carry a 1,500-kilogram payload, including Cirit laser-guided missiles, Roketsan’s UMTAS anti-tank guided missiles and Mizrak anti-tank missiles.
The aircraft is also equipped with an advanced forward-looking infrared sensor built by military electronics specialist Aselsan, Turkey’s largest defense firm, and it has a maximum speed of 574 kph (357 mph).[...]
The Hurkus-B is an advanced version of the Hurkus-A, with integrated avionics. The cockpit avionics of the “B” variant have a layout similar to the American F-16 and F-35 fighter jets.

Finland approves deployment of the F-35A assembly line at Patria
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 04/03/2024 - 23:18in Military
The company Patria, in collaboration with the Finnish Ministry of Defense, is prepared to build an assembly facility in Finland for the production of F-35 Block 4 fighters.
The recent approval by the Ministerial Finance Committee of the Ministry of Defense's proposed lease of land and facilities is a significant milestone in the $9.6 billion acquisition agreement between Finland and Lockheed Martin, covering the delivery of 64 F-35A jets to the Finnish Air Force.
Tumblr media
The automaker, a crucial component of the initial phase of the contract, will be located near the city of Nokia, with the beginning of the construction of the engine assembly building scheduled for the second half of 2024. The lease agreement for the site was signed in January between the Finnish Defense Forces and Defense Properties of Finland.
The Finnish Minister of Defense, Antti Häkkänen, emphasized the contribution of industrial cooperation to the defense industry of Finland, stating: “The F-35 agreement will generate critical experience in maintenance and repair, including reliability of maintenance, promoting significant know-how in Finland for the assembly and testing of F-35 engines.”
Tumblr media
The assembly factory will collaborate closely with the regional aircraft center of Patria's aviation division in Tampere, with about 100 employees involved in various assembly functions at the facilities. Patria, in which the government holds a 50.1% stake, will work alongside the Norwegian company Kongsberg, which controls the remaining stake. In addition, Patria owns half of the Norwegian defense contractor Nammo.
The F-35s are scheduled to replace the former McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet jets of the Finnish Air Force, with retirement scheduled for 2030. The first batch of F-35 is expected to be delivered and deployed in the Arctic air bases in the regions of Lapland Finland by 2026.
Tumblr media
The industrial cooperation component is expected to gradually expand by 2030, potentially covering the production or assembly of specific aircraft parts and systems in Finland. The Finnish Air Force has already carried out tests to evaluate the suitability of the F-35 to operate in extreme climatic conditions in the Arctic, with recent exercises including maneuvers on stretches of "closed road" in the Arctic and subarctic regions.
The ongoing exercises, such as the one-week Hanki 24 workouts in the northern part of the country, aim to better evaluate the adaptability of the F-35 to the challenging winter conditions of Finland, characterized by limited daytime light.

Tinubu vows end to insecurity as NAF unveils attack helicopters
Tumblr media
President Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday, reiterated his administration’s commitment to ending the insecurity plaguing the country. The President stated this when he inducted two T129 Attack Combat Helicopters and one King Air Beechcraft 360ER mobility aircraft for use by the Nigerian Air Force. Represented by his Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President said the acquisition of the helicopters and the induction symbolised the commitment of his administration to the nation’s security. The induction ceremony held at the 131 Engineering Group Hanger, Nigeria Air Force Base, Makurdi. The President said that the acquisition and induction of the new platforms would improve NAF’s airpower in the ongoing war against terrorism. He acknowledged that since its establishment in 1964, “NAF has been playing a critical role in the nation’s security, international operations and humanitarian needs.” “Let me commend the Chief of Air Staff, officers and men for their commitment to enhancing national security. I assure you that the Tinubu administration will continue to support NAF and indeed, the Armed Forces of Nigeria towards combating terrorism, oil theft and other criminal activities.” The President said substantial progress had been achieved in the ongoing counterterrorism efforts but noted that there should be no cause for celebration yet until the security challenges were fully addressed. He called for a change in mindset, strategy and tactics in addressing the menace. Earlier in his speech, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, said that NAF had taken delivery of no fewer than seven aircraft. He listed the new aircraft to include two Diamond 62 surveillance aircraft, two T-129 ATAK helicopters, and a King Air 360 ER. He added that the NAF would induct 46 new aircraft of various types over the next 18 months. He said the air force has 170 pilots and 533 technicians and they were undergoing training locally and internationally. The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, expressed gratitude to the President for his foresight and dogged support for the armed forces. He said the induction of the newly-acquired aircraft was a testimony to Tinubu’s resolve to tackle insecurity in the country while urging the air force to make the best use of the newly acquired aircraft. Experts at the event said that the T129 ATAK is a twin-engine, tandem-seat, multi-role, all-weather attack helicopter based on the Agusta A129 Mangusta platform, developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries in partnership with Leonardo SPA. The helicopter, it is understood, is designed for armed reconnaissance and attack missions in hot and high environments and rough geography in both day and night conditions. Highlights of the event were the signing of the handing over documents and aerial display by the T129 Attack Combat Helicopter. Read the full article
