Wood Engraving Wednesday

RICHARD SHIRLEY SMITH

English painter, illustrator, muralist, and wood engraver Richard Shirley Smith (b. 1935) produced this engraving for the title page of a collection of poems entitled The Closed Door by British writer James Reeves (1909-1978), printed by Claire Van Vliet and Susan Johanknecht at Van Vliet's Janus Press in Newark, Vermont in an edition of 240 copies, and co-published in 1977 by Twinrocker and the Janus Press, with 75 copies for Twinrocker in Brookston, Indiana and the Janus Press and 165 for the Gruffyground Press in England.

Smith studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London and continued his studies in Italy where he became interested in classical themes and Italian architecture, as reflected in this engraving. It was in Rome during the early 1960s where he taught himself wood engraving, a medium that has brought him the most attention. He writes, "My . . . years of wood engraving has been the backbone of my reputation, such as it is."

As a counterpoint to the homemade papers in my previous post, here is a collection of art papers handmade by experienced craftspeople. At left/bottom of the stack, Turner Blue watercolor paper from Ruscombe Paper Mill in Margaux, France. This is a reproduction of a historical paper made from cotton and linen, including some blue- and black-dyed fibers. The single greenish-hued sheet in the middle of the stack is the version of Turner Blue produced by Twinrocker in Brookston, Indiana. This sheet includes fibers of blue denim. Finally, the three sheets at the right/top of the stack are again from Ruscombe. This is called Saint Jean, from a limited run of papers made in 2014 and also containing used cotton denim rags. All of these papers are gelatine-sized and appropriate for watermedia.

I actually feel like a horrible person because I don’t have a ton of free time these days, so I have to be kind of choosy with fic that I read/keep up with, here is a very short and non-comprehensive list of people to check out:

@braithwaites - rdr2 (and far cry bc I’m gonna make her) // an actual literary goddess?? I haven’t read a single thing of hers that I haven’t loved and she has this insane ability to churn out q u a l i t y chapters of her fics like a factory.

@kieranduffys - rdr2/far cry // literal master of short form storytelling and excels at making their characters (and YOU) soft. everything orion writes is a joy to read.

@songofproserpine - rdr2/far cry // if you’re looking for fic that’s outside of the norm and sometimes much darker in tone, krist is the author for you. I just recently started reading her arthur/nem fic and it is [chef kiss].

@hedgewitches - okay, meg hasn’t written fanfiction in forever BUT she’s always been one of the best writers I’ve known on tumblr so I’d suggest browsing her tags. idk how you feel about dragon age, but her dragon age stuff is some of my absolute favorite fic.

those are my quick, off-the-top-of-my-head recommendations. there are a handful of new mutuals I’ve made in the far cry fandom whose fic I’ve been setting aside to check out over the long weekend, too. I just ahhhh. I am surrounded by so many talented people. :’)

Hey! So I kiiiinda maybe already answered the grief one in a previous ask. But! I can give you a glimpse of grief they had in their lives! Yay grief! °˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°

So when Edgar Wolf was gunned down, the boys were pretty wrecked. The gang leader was the closest thing they had to a father figure and they never thought this would be the last time they saw him. During the bank robbery, something or someone botched up the escape and the authorities were chasing onto them too close for comfort. Edgar ordered the gang to split into three groups to scatter and confuse the law. Now usually the boys who more or less became Ed’s right hand, would have gone with his group, But Ed refused and told them to get the others to safety, taking only three other gang members with him. Now they weren’t there when it happened, no one else aside from the law. But by that evening when Ed and the others had yet to show up, they got someone to sneak into town and listen in. Ed and the others were dead, just corpses floating down the river. The Teale brothers were quite clearly shaken by this and were one of the few in denial about it. No, it couldn’t be true now could it? It’s probably one of old Ed’s fantastical escape plans once again! So the brothers went out the next morning down to where the shootout had happened, mindful of any law lingering in the area. Nothing but old blood adsorbed into the dirt. No clues or hidden messages like before. Nothing. The boys didn’t get back to the gang right away after that, they needed to just… face reality for a moment, staring at the rushing currents of the river. If any of them shed a quiet tear, the other two didn’t mention it. They lost another parent, more or less. It was hard. By the time they came back to the gang’s camp, the place looked near well ransacked and abandoned. They were able to get an explanation from a dying gang member slumped against their tent. That the gang started to turn on each other after the realization of Edgar being dead set in. Everyone wanted to split up the remaining money. A fight broke out, someone shot. Then a whole shootout happened. Just like that, over money, their family of outlaws turned on each other without Ed’s guidance. They at least got a name out of the dying friend of who shot first and used their grief as a weapon to hunt down the idiot who started the massacre in camp. A few days later, they found him, alone and almost dying already with a festering gunshot wound, but with the majority of the camp funds. At this point all that anger and grief they were using to track the bastard just about been all used up and now they just felt… tired..Tired, empty, and unsure what to do next. So they killed the man quickly and just took the funds for themselves. YAY GRIEF :)��As for voices!

I’ve yet to really match the boys up with a voice or actor I’ve heard before. But to describe their voices…Leo and Theo’s voice may have sounded similar when they were kids, but changed greatly over time mirroring their behaviors. So while the same general deepness is there, Leo is more soft and almost gentle, reflecting his calmer demeanor and lack of constant conversation. Theo’s is a bit louder, stronger, more inflection and tones thrown into his voice when speaking.

Nick’s voice is generally just… very tired sounding lol. He’s got a lot of that vocal fry when he speaks. Depending on his moods that can either make him sound pretty harsh and no nonsense or just very soft and sleepy. :p
