this year's jsc choice versions:
all-female cast. i haven't actually seen this yet, i just found it on a youtube search today. i'm looking forward to starting it after i finish with the original film version, but i have listened to the album and loved it.
latest tour production. i saw this version when it was (very) briefly in toronto in december 2021, before the run was cut short due to cast & crew testing positive for covid. fantastic set, amazing costuming for king herod, tyrone huntley as judas (after he originated this version in the regent's park open air theatre) which was an experience (the cast in this video is from 2022 - 2023, not the cast i saw).

10 + 14 for the year asks but give us like at least three books :)
10. Something that made you cry this year? JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR ON STAGE!!!!! judas' death always gets me anyway but the way it was staged had me sobbing. tyrone huntley was as good as carl anderson and that's saying something. and declan bennett was fantastic too he absolutely smashed jesus' iconic rock screams and so few jesuses have the balls to do that these days
14. Favourite book you read this year? ok admittedly i didn't read much but the bloody chamber by angela carter (reread), wild by amy jeffs, and british fairies by john kruse <3 i have so many new books i'm gonna get round to though

You've started to believe The things they say of you You really do believe This talk of God is true And all the good you've done Will soon get swept away You've begun to matter more Than the things you say

Judas Iscariot, "Heaven on Their Minds”-”Last Supper” Costume (Tyrone Huntley) Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Timothy Sheader Jesus Christ Superstar Production 2016-17 (1/4)
Designer: Tom Scutt
Costume Notes: He wears this outfit for most the show until “Judas’ Death wear he strips his top layer down to a tank top,
He is wearing about four layers (from most inner to outer): tank top (seen in Judas’ death), white shirt (top right), hooded dark gray “jacket,” loose light gray “jacket.”
As for his lower costumes, he wears the same grey pants through the whole show, and his black sneakers (with a white bottom edge) will be changed to silver shoes for Superstar
In the bottom left photo if you look at his right arm you can see some skin showing, the dark gray layer has slimmer sleeves than the light gray jacket layer that Huntley keeps rolled up (some of this length of sleeves will change in later version)
Judas has silver paint on his hand, I assume, to represent the silver coins he betrays Jesus for, the silver paint is not smeared on until Judas is offered the deal to betray Jesus for coins, in that scene he dunks his hands into a chest full of silver paint (making it so he is literally stained by his deed), the chest with Silver paint will be in a future post of the Chicago version of this production)
Most photos aside from top left and 2nd row is from the Olivier performance
The same theatre plans to reopen in August 2020 with Jesus Christ Superstar, I assume with the same design

Jesus Christ Superstar: The Concert - Regent's Park Open Air Theatre - Review
Jesus Christ Superstar: The Concert – Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre – Review
Tumblr media
“From Fri 14 Aug we are delighted to re-open our theatre with #JCStheConcert – a special concert staging of Jesus Christ Superstar, created by the team behind our multi-award winning production.”  I don’t think I’ll ever forget the joy I felt reading those words in July.  They meant that after months of bad news, something wonderful was happening.  They meant that theatre was back.

Hi, I need the View Upstairs to pull a Hadestown ASAP
By that I mean transfer with the West End cast to Broadway, record a cast album, get all the love it deserves, and win all the Tony’s.

Just back from seeing The View Upstairs at the Soho Theatre and it was so so good! Incredible singers, great characters and heartfelt storytelling.
The show is about a “millennial fashion designer” who buys a run-down building in New Orleans which unbeknownst to him used to be a gay bar called the Upstairs Lounge. What follows is drug-induced, time-travelling as he ends up in 1973 and meets the people who frequented the Upstairs Lounge.
It stars Tyrone Huntley, Andy Mientus, John Partridge and Carly Mercedes Dyer among others and features original songs by Max Vernon.
It’s based on the real-life Upstairs Lounge (which I would recommend researching before seeing it as there was a tragic event which occurred that’s featured in the show).
So, if you’re in London before 24 August, do go and see it. You won’t regret it.
