Heaven on Their Minds is such an unreal opener for a musical, both in terms of its lyrics and how it subverts the usual form of the medium. If I think about it too much I WILL explode.
self care tip: dance through your room like an idiot to the soundtrack of jesus christ superstar while singing and pretending to be every single character all at once
It's Judas telling Jesus all the reasons that he's wrong, and rocking out while doing so. What more could you want?
It's literally so good and super interesting opening song immediately introducing us to the depth of both Judas and Jesus as characters in the show
Solo
"I feel my body stretched between two cliffs/on one side is fantasy/the other, reality/I feel my fingers start to lose their grip/and I can't hold on"
This is about the online dating scene and incels, two things that I really have no experience with or interest in, but somehow it's still one that sticks with me and feels relatable so I think that means it's well done
God I am obsessed with Octet you do not understand, this musical about internet addiction has no business being this good, but that’s Dave Malloy for you
The way he sings "do other people get to feel this all the time ?" !!?!?
reading the newest chapter of heaven on their minds fills me with adrenaline that I had to put my phone down to slow my racing heart then screamed into my pillow
it's so sad when the best song in a musical is the first song. it just sets you up for disappointment, even when the musical is Good. but you heard that song and it blew you away, and you say "if that's just the opening how fantastic is the rest of this show?!?!?" "how heart-rending is the climax going to be?!?!"
Judas Iscariot, “Heaven On Their Minds” - "Judas’ Death” Costume (Erik Bauck Bårdstu) Haugesund Teater Jesus Christ Superstar Production 2017 (1/2)
Costume design: Thale Kvam Olsen
Jesus: Aslak Rossehaug
Mary Magdalene: Mari Lerberg Fossum
Costume Notes: His costume consists of a pale blue short-sleeved t-shirt with a black vest over it. The black vest appears to have a diamond quilting pattern on it. His trousers are brown and cuffed. He wears grey socks with shoelace tied shoes that are dark in color.
This is Bårdstu singing Heaven on their mind on Instagram posted by the theatre: link. They also posted part of his Superstar: link. There's also another video on Facebook of him singing Heaven.
Broadway Tumblr. I just saw the recent national tour of Jesus Christ Superstar. It was first of all, amazing. Simply spectacular. BUT it got me thinking about if I could direct another movie version (I know two already exist), BUT this one skewers the political Right, and in many ways would show how they have perverted Christianity to fit their own personal narratives.
Setting: NYC, Present day
Jesus: Middle Eastern Man, working in homeless shelters, promoting green living, spreading joy, etc.
Judas: White Man, similar activist, thinks that Jesus is thinking too small, is worried that Jesus is getting to loud due to the local news getting more and more coverage of him and his message.
Mary: Black Woman, not much to really change about this character, but is always seen with Jesus when the cameras are around, leading to Judas' concern.
The Pharisees: Fox News style hosts. All white men with blonde or brown hair, coifed and overly white shiny teeth. All of their songs are told through 'talking head' style reporting.
Pilate: Police Chief who is worried about crime and the appearance of the police.
King Herod: Joel Osteen style televangelist. Big stadium sized church, showy looks, overly smiley.
All of this just flooded into my head while watching the show and just had to share it with y'all. Do with it what you will.
