okay but might i seriously suggest playing yume nikki/2kki to anyone who likes rpg horror, or undertale, or even the backrooms as a concept. anyone who likes concepts that can be so beautiful one moment to mildly/very unnerving the next.
if you had an rpg horror phase in middle school and heard about the toby fox interview (and got hyped like i did), i heavily suggest getting into yume 2kki (especially the online version, where you can hang out with other people in game) the maps are beautiful, strange, comforting, scary, confusing, and wacky. i love them, and it's so nostalgic. i got back into it again and i cant stop exploring. ive been playing for hours on end, it is practically endless. i just keep finding new things, new places i want to go to.
the npcs??? i am obsessed with each and every one of them
they're funky little guys created from the minds of so many different people, they're all wonderful
please play it, you'll love it so much <3

On this day 1 year ago Version 0.01 of Deathbed Lullabye was released to the public. The game that me and my mother teamed up to make. We're unable to release the next update to celebrate as originally planned... But let it be known hat the game is still very alive and we are adding so much. alot of stuff over the past year.  Despite that, I made a little image to celebrate. here is art piece of almost the entire cast. I put as many NPCs from the game as I could in one piece of artwork.(and may of ran out of time before I could color it.) Enjoy! and here to another year of work on our game!

thinking about yume nikki and end roll and omori and dreams in media. sunny and madotsuki both creating vast dream worlds after becoming shut-ins and slowly losing themselves to their own minds. russell and sunny both having committed murder and their dreamscapes in part being a reflection of that. the difference between sunny's dreamscape as his old friends all getting along and working together vs russells being The People He Has Murdered getting along and working together. both of their worlds growing darker and falling apart as awareness creeps in. the unique sense of guilt that both of them carry.

playing omori is legit like. a worse version of any yume nikki fangame. the game design is so poor and considering how long it took to even come out, with allegations the creator used the kickstarter money for personal purchases… it’s kind of insane and inexcusable how bad it is. idc how much you like the story if it takes 25 miserable hours to get there!!
EXACTLYYY and honestly playing through it, it felt so... passionless. I think its kind of obvious that omocat only expected to have a few backers instead of the kick-starter blowing up and overfunding her rpgmaker game.
For some comparison:
Undertale : USD$51,124 kickstarter budget, took 2 years to release
Hollow Knight: A$57,000 kickstarter budget, took 3 years to release
Omori: USD$203,300 kickstarter budget, took SEVEN years to release
It was a known fact before omoris release that omocat took the money and spent it on their clothing line and shop (in fact one of the promos for their shop opening was that visitors would get to play a demo for omori, which enraged the kickstarter backers who had been left in radio silence for years and were apparently not even going to be able to play the demo unless they went to the shop, and then the demo was released on a fucking dropbox link.) And for a while a bunch of backers fully believed they had been scammed. Plus one of the funding goals was to make omori available for the 3ds, which not only is impossible for the rpgmaker engine, but also by the time the game released the 3ds was defunct.
And you know, maybe its just because omocat is an artist who didn't really know much about game design. Maybe that's why it got so messy. Sure! It could be that! But even then, by art standards, omori lacks A LOT. only the main characters get to have face portraits despite there being many reocurring relevant characters both in dream and real world, and ALL the main characters have the same head and bangs like they were made on a fucking picrew. The monsters and npc designs were absurdly lacking (like come on look at the sprout moles) and as much they bragged about slime girls composing the ost it was actually pretty damn mediocre. The pixel art too, for the most of the dream world its repeated assets over and over (the forest is SO ugly with all the reused trees) when it's not referencing yume nikki imagery

Also sorry but i have to mention again how hideous the forest areas look with the same trees copypasted everywhere. Like damn dude at least change the colors a little.
Tumblr media
Not to mention the gorgeously made pixel part with that mspaint spray effect (its ugly. Im saying its ugly. What the fuck is this dithering.)
Tumblr media
And the funny thing is that the (real world) story is actually pretty solid for a horror game. But in order to experience it you have to sit through extremely cringy, annoying and excessive dialogue written by adults who don't really know how kids talk and interact with each other. The dream world segments take up 80% of the game and every single arc in it SUCKS. They're overdragged, uninteresting, unfunny and obnoxious. But haha look if you do this you get a jumpscare! Isn't this game so deep????
And after omori got released it feels like you just can't do creepy cute things anymore without being compared to it. Its tiring 😑 fuck poomori

what inspirations did you draw from in the making of Fatum Betula? where did the idea for the design of the spirit who wants the painting come from? are there any music artists or specific songs that you think reflect the tone of the game?
I played Iketsuki by my friend Modus Interactive while working on Protagoras Bleeds, and it really inspired me to want to make a game based around a single, strange goal. I remember walking down a sidewalk while trying to think of something to center this game around when, for whatever reason, the idea of watering a plant with various strange liquids stuck me. That was the initial seed for the whole game (to this day the original folder for the game is still titled "waterplantgame"). During development I was heavily inspired by Yume Nikki as well as my specific experience with the n64 zelda games. When I was really young, my cousin gave me his old n64 along with all his games, so my experiences with oot and mm were completely devoid of context aside from the art on the covers. I would play my cousin's 100% completed save files and just run around the game aimlessly talking to npcs, exploring environments, and triggering various events. I distinctly remember the vibe of kokiri forest and the big scary ass monster that flies at you in hyrule field if you get too close. I also spent a lot of time wandering around clock town. I honestly could not tell you where the idea for the spirit who wants the painting came from. It was probably one of those things that hit me at like 2am while I was drifting asleep idk. I can't remember if the painting came first or if he did. I think that Simone's OST for the game reflects it perfectly, but of course it would. I think a lot of Modus Interactive's music, the yume nikki soundtrack, and the more ambient songs from majora's mask would also be good fits.
