Hey! If you have the time/energy I’d love to hear more about southern indigenous history. I know a bit from college about Tenochtitlan and the era around colonization, but it’s what I learned in my meso American archaeology course which I feel like is probably really heavily white washed and told from the colonizer perspective.
* <- This means if that if you remind me enough, I will gladly talk about it in a seperate post.
It’s really eye-opening to search these topics in your lonesome so you can come to your own educated conclusions, especially when misinformation about Mexican Indigenous history in Latine political spaces is so common, or it is told through a Hispanic view and not an Indigenous one. I’m going to be rambling on what comes to mind, because I need to focus on a specific topic to drive the point home due to the fact that “Indigenous history” as a topic is extremely broad. If you want to look for more in-depth Mexican Indigenous history yourself, I recommend looking up the Flower Wars, Teotihuacan, Hernán Cortés, Casta system, Christeros war & the Mexican revolution (note that Indigenous people were participants, not sole drivers here), Zapatistas.. These are just some basic keywords if you want to search anything.
Mexico is a nation built off of misfortune and pain just like America. The introduction of Old World diseases nearly decimated our population in waves, Afrolatine history is often overlooked despite their influence in building this country, and the Spanish routinely lied about events and statistics (written accounts from natives, as well as archeological evidence, shows this repeatedly).* They also violently and systematically converted us culturally and linguistically after they enslaved us.* The effects of colonization continue to run rampant today, in poverty, in racism, in the death of cultures. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
Despite all of this, we are an extremely proud people, and to deny that our history is covered in blood like any other country continues to be our downfall. The Mexican constitution itself acknowledges our existence as being a backbone to the country, “The Mexican Nation is unique and indivisible.
The nation is multicultural, based originally on its indigenous peoples, described as descendants of those inhabiting the country before colonization and that preserve their own social, economic, cultural and political institutions, or some of them,” (Article 2, line 1 & 2)
yet the government gives absolutely nothing to the education system, continues to screw Indigenous communities over with tourism spots, maquiladoras, deforestation, crime, and poverty, and then lets our women die due to vulnerability in the streets & a lack of adequate healthcare.* There is absolutely no appreciation of Indigenous Mexicans I’ve seen that is genuine and unwarranted—the guy calling you an Indio in your own taqueria before he goes home to watch fùtball with a cigarillo is a culturally different copy of the average racist American you think about. For all we know, he probably beats the pride of Mexico into his children’s heads too.
In prehispanic times, Mexican Indigenous people were well-adapted into their respective environments or constantly immigrating, with most of the population density being in Mesoamerica, where large, wealthy cultural hubs like Teotihuacan, Tikal, Tula, and Tenochitlan existed. There were multiple waves of migrations from the Nahuas into the Valley of México, and one of the most prominent migrations come from the Mexica-Tenochca one thousand years ago. From the southwest US (Aztlan), the Mexica-Tenochca came down to central Mexico and settled over Lake Texcoco after seeing the prophetic symbol they were seeking, the eagle eating the snake. After the rise of Tenochitlan, the Mexica-Tenochca formed an alliance with Texcoco and Tlacopan and created the Aztec Triple Alliance in 1345 CE. The empire through it’s 200 years forged more wars than it forged alliances, and started the Flower Wars. Within the empires lifespan there existed hydroplaning, advanced agricultural practices, the city layouts were actually planned, powerful weapons were created, and there existed a complicated religion with a culture that has been almost completely run into the ground due to the forced introduction of Spanish Catholicism and values.
The Purépecha also had a large, similar empire that rivaled the Aztecs, and their own rich religion with a culture to go along with it. They created their own version of hockey called uárukua ch'anakua, “a game with sticks”, which uses a ball in place of a puck. There is a version called pasárutakua which involves the ball being lit on fire for the remainder of the game. They often did metalwork which spawned metal artwork and weapons, which gave them the upper hand in repeatedly defeating the Aztecs in battle. These people are another prominent Mesoamerican group and are cultural/linguistic isolates, likely descended from a migrant group of Quechua people immigrating out of South America in 1100 CE. Unlike the Aztec Triple Alliance, which was quickly dispersed by the Spanish and assimilated into the surrounding areas leaving pockets of Nahua populations, the Purépecha were instead under the rule of New Spain and allowed to stay in their homeland, leading to a non-assimilated Purépecha population in west-central Mexico.
There are also the Maya. Several different Maya cultures exist today alongside a several dialects in the Mayan language family. The foundation of the regional cultures were inspired by the Olmec civilization which started in 2600 BCE. They developed an extensive calandrical system alongside their advanced astronomy, philosophy, and a detailed writing system that had been used to document history for hundreds of years before Spanish conquest. The culture of the Maya people has greatly influenced several of the surrounding communities, such as that of the Nahuas in the valley, where the Nahua religion went through several changes. (This is why the Maya and Nahuas share dieties like Chaac/Tlaloc and Kukulkan/Quetzalcoatl.)
There are also the Otomi, Mixtec, Zapotec, Mazahua, Tlaxcaltecs, Guachichil, Zacatec, Tepéhuan, Raramuri, and more with their own unique histories. Mexico officially recognizes 65 Indigenous groups, all of which are genetically distinct and did not mix much until today. (1, 2, 3)
We are all individual peoples who have inhabited and evolved with this land for over ten thousand years. We tended and adapted the environment to our needs while taking care of it just like Indigenous people from every other continent. We built connections, traded across continents using trade languages like Classical Nahuatl, exchanged information through writing, we all had our own breakthroughs to make our lives easier. Before the Spanish, we had paper, weaved intricate clothes, made detailed artwork—paintings, featherwork, metalwork, tattooing, clay, stone, and more. Not all of us did these things, as we aren’t a monolith, but we are all like rich oil paints that make up the foundation of the detailed, colorful painting that is Mexico.
