Taj pressed a couple of buttons and turned around. He looked through the doorway to the back of the airship. "Now, in a few minutes, we're going to get close enough to Atlas to get a good look at it. I'm going to ask everyone to not rush to the sides and make it hard for you to balance. Before anyone asks, I can't do circles to help you guys get a better look at it. Atlas HQ's Picket Fleet would like to have a word with us. But, you do get a choice."
"What's up?" Yang asked.
"Do you want to come in high, and see all the skyscrapers, or do you want to come in low to see the hive of scum and villainy that is Atlasian Military HQ?"
Jaune looked at Aurora, "What does Weiss think?" Aurora simply crossed her arms.
"What's that about?" Yang asked.
"Oh?" Aurora asked, "They are both shining, gleaming monstrosities. Atlas has slowly been taken over by those who cannot deign to set foot upon the ground. To her, Atlas was her prison."
"And you?" Blake asked.
"To me? Well, I am hardly suited to hard labour, nor do I have the... shall we say, nature of a Huntress. There was only one way for me to succeed, and that was to learn the skills of those self-deluded in the stratosphere."
"Wait?" Blake asked, "You weren't born in the city?"
"Sadly, no." Aurora stated, "When I moved to Atlas, I had nothing but the clothes on my back. I had to work for..." she said, and paused to take a breath, "not the most outstanding individuals. As Jaune guessed, I spent every dollar not used to put food in my belly or a leaking roof over my head, to improve myself. To learn the affections of the effete."
Yang sat forward, "Well, you did a fantastic job."
"Thank you." Aurora replied.
"Buuut..." she voiced. "When you say, who you worked for, you know?"
Aurora breathed in deep before replying, "I never joined them. I did have to ignore most of what was happening around me. Apologies; I would rather not reminisce."
"Nah." Yang said, "It's just so amazing. Everything you did."
"You are a Huntress, I will remind you." Aurora stated.
"Huh?" Yang asked, and leaned back. "I didn't exactly choose it. Mom, dad..." she voiced, "Raven, were all Huntsmen. I didn't so much as choose it as just go with the flow, you know?"
Aurora looked at her with a bright smile that quickly faded, "Unfortunately, no. I couldn't imagine doing half of what you girls do."
"And Jaune." Nora stated.
"And Yang?" Ruby asked.
"And why is that a question?" Blake asked her.
"Well," Yang voiced, "you kind of think it would be Ren."
"Pfft." Nora voiced, "He knows how I feel."
"For whatever reason." Aurora said, and paused, "It's easier for me to see Jaune, in his primal, masculine self, being a vaunted hero."
"Are we sure she's gay?" Yang asked.
"Sapphic." Blake stated.
"She said we can call her gay." Yang added.
"Sapphic is just more poetic." Blake added.
"Are we going to do the Saph-who thing again?" Yang asked, "Couldn't someone just tell me?"
"Poet." Taj said from up front.
"Poet-ess." Blake stated.
"And just why does T-Rex know?" Yang asked.
"Because I'm a fan." Taj stated.
"Of her?" Yang asked, and Taj turned back to the controls.
"Taking her low, it is."
"Alright?" Yang asked, "What kind of Poet. The Ess kind? Is that a kind of poet?"
"It's a female kind." Aurora stated.
"So, she writes poems about women?" Yang asked.
"I can't believe you can accidentally be right in both ways." Blake stated.
"Wait, I was right?" Yang asked, "So, who writies poems about women."
"She's a female poet that writes poems about women." Aurora stated.
"Which one makes her an Ess?" Yang asked, and looked at Jaune, "You going to help me out here?"
"I have absolutely no idea what to say." Jaune honestly replied.
"A poetess is simply a female poet." Aurora stated.
"But she writes poems about women?" Ruby asked.
"Yes." Aurora replied.
"What kind of stories?" Yang asked.
"The amourous kind." Aurora replied.
"The amer?"Yang asked.
"Amour." Blake stated.
"Loving." Aurora added.
"OOOH!" Yang stated.
"And men." Aurora added.
"Aha!" Yang shouted.
"Aha, what?" Jaune asked.
"She admits it!" Yang continued.
Jaune sighed and breathed in deep.
"Sappho wrote about both men and women." Jaune voiced.
"Aha!" Yang shouted.
"But Sapphic means lesbian." He continued.
"But?" Yang asked.
"Yes, it is a conundrum." Aurora stated. "It is believed it was because of the collection of poems she had about seducing the wives of heroes away at war."
"So?" Yang asked, "She's a lesbian?"
"THE lesbian." Blake stated. "I'm not the one who makes the rules."
"There's rules?" Yang asked, "That would make it SO much less confusing."
"Sadly, no." Blake voiced. "We have to write them ourselves."
"Ehn." Yang muttered.
"Or let Jaune write them for us." Blake added.
"What?" Jaune asked.
"We just let you write the rules?" Blake asked him.
"Why me?" he asked, and Blake developed a pained look on her face.
"You are, you know?" Yang asked, "The daddy."
"I'm the what?" Jaune asked.
"The pater famlias." Blake added.
"Peter-something?" Yang asked.
"Father of the family." Blake replied.
It was Aurora's turn. "Traditionally, the family was the basic unit of society, and the father was the leader of it."
"Jaune's the daddy!" Yang exclaimed. "Weiss is the mommy. I'm the big sister."
"Ruby?" Nora asked.
"The spunky younger sister." Yang replied.
"And me?" Blake asked.
"Pet cat?" Yang asked, and Blake dove across the back of the airship. Yang bounced off the side to leap out of the way, the whole thing beginning to shake. She found herself stop an inch away from the other side, being held up by Jaune's arm. Blake leapt back over, only to be caught by Jaune.
"What - the - ever- loving?!.." Taj shouted from the front seat. "You idiots try that again, and you can get out and walk!"
"Hah!" Yang shouted, "You can't!.."
"Unless Jaune let him." Blake nervously added, being held under Jaune's arm with a look like the cat who ate the canary.
"I am in favour of us NOT DYING!" Jaune shouted.
Penthesilea's eyes flashed.

Ruby picked up her scroll and saw a picture of Jaune, with Blake under his left hand, and Yang the other way under his right. She showed Weiss, who developed a pouty look. "What's the matter, Weissy-poo?" Ruby asked, and Weiss glared at her, "Upset that you are missing the fun?"
"Fun is a concept that is novel to me." Weiss stated, "Something I find myself enjoying more and more as it happens. On the other hand, I have no interest in returning to Atlas."
* * *
The airship approached the underside of Atlas, and as they got closer they could see artificial structures. As they got closer they could see superstructure, windows, ports, and drydocks. Nora poked her head in.
"You can have a seat if you want." Taj said to her, and she rushed over to the seat. Ren appeared in the doorway and braced against it.
"It's an upside down city!" Nora exclaimed, causing Yang to appear behind Ren. He gently moved to the side to let her peer through.
"Atlas Military HQ." Ciel said from the back. Yang looked back to find her standing right next to her. She stepped back to let her through. "Excuse me." she said to Ren as she slipped passed. "They wanted the military to protect Atlas, which they have definiitely succeeded in."
"We?" Yang asked, and Ciel looked at her curiously. "Aren't you all hoo-rah about becoming a Specialist."
"I have made a pledge to become a retainer to the house of Arc Nouveau."
"That must have been rough." Yang said to her, "Like, you had a career?"
"I still believe I do." Ciel stated.
"Did you tell General Clank?" Yang asked.
"I have tendered my resignation, yes." Ciel replied.
"So?" Yang asked, looking at the looming structures in front of them, "Why the hell is Atlas HQ way down here."
"Oh, simple?" Blake asked from her seat in the back, and Yang turned back to look at her.
"Simple?" Yang asked.
"They wanted an army to protect them, but they didn't want to see them." Blake uttered.
"Land in Atlas is extremely limited." Ciel stated, "It makes sense to not wish to use up available space."
"Meaning," Blake added, "they wanted the airships to protect them, but they didn't want to have to see them. Atlas has the largest, most powerful, most projectable military in the history of Remnant. But you don't hear the people talking about how good it is."
"They just complain about how much they're paying." Taj said, soundly enough to echo into the back. "They don't seem to get that like half of the military budget is to pay Grimm bounties, so, the smaller cities don't have to worry about footing the bill, themselves. Nope, all they see is the shiny, gleaming airfleet watching over them. Everything General Ironwood has tried to do has been to try and protect the people."
"Indeed." Ciel affirmed.
"But the people don't care." Taj added.

And pleads with her to stay awake
And then he cups her head with his hands
I find it interesting that in his moment of panic worrying about her he calls her Daisy, but once he’s settled and has telling his story he’s back to Agent Johnson
But also when did he find out her first name?
Anyway I could watch this scene like 10000 times because it’s amazing and everything I wanted
Also Daisy is so brave and beautiful and smart to be able to think of stashing that glass in her palm while being tortured
I love her
I love Sousa
I love them together bless
And like, watching Sousa tap into his own trauma to help someone else is so very Sousa of him, you know?
He doesn’t exactly look like he enjoys telling that story. I mean he keeps looking at his leg when he mentions it being a pulpy mess, and he stares into space a lot when he’s not focused on Daisy. So I don’t think that was an easy task for him. And yet he did it. For her. To try and keep her focused and there.
Also that look on his face when he says there’s plenty of fight in her like
He’s completely a goner then

In fairness to Deke he has every reason to be concerned about what he’s seeing here with Enoch and Jemma

Also I know I posted this before, but Deke does a very interesting thing with his eyes here. He comes in, tells them they’re about to jump, then his eyes flick over to Daisy and then to Sousa. I highly suspect that even Deke realized at that point that there was something there.

But also, sir, you can barely look at anything except Daisy obviously everyone on this plane is going to know what’s up if they don’t already
And then Jemma’s little smile when she walks off...you know she was trying to think of a way to take a stealth pic for Daisy’s scrapbook

Whew this episode had a lot. I mean it managed to score a 10000/10 on the BREAKING MY HEART scale but also a 100000/10 on the MY HEART IS SO HAPPY SCALE. I went through some things y’all. Also clearly we’re like 1000/10 on the Dousy scale. Meanwhile Elena gets a 5000/10 on the Supportive Girlfriend scale because really? She was the best.
We’re going to pretend the heartbreaking stuff didn’t happen and just go with a happy song. So from 1976, here’s “You Are the Woman” by Firefall because Daniel Sousa is gooooooone.

WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT MUHAMMAD [ PART 2 ]
Encyclopedia Britannica:
“....a mass of detail in the early sources show that he was an honest and upright man who had gained the respect and loyalty of others who were like-wise honest and upright men.” (Vol. 12)
George Bernard Shaw said about him:
“He must be called the Saviour of Humanity. I believe that if a man like him were to assume the dictatorship of the modern world, he would succeed in solving its problems in a way that would bring it much needed peace and happiness.”
(The Genuine Islam, Singapore, Vol. 1, No. 8, 1936)
He was by far the most remarkable man that ever set foot on this earth. He preached a religion, founded a state, built a nation, laid down a moral code, initiated numerous social and political reforms, established a powerful and dynamic society to practice and represent his teachings and completely revolutionized the worlds of human thought and behavior for all times to come.
Prophet Muhammad was born in Arabia in the year 570 C.E., started his mission of preaching the religion of Truth, Islam (submission to One God) at the age of forty and departed from this world at the age of sixty-three. During this short period of twenty three years of his Prophethood, he changed the complete Arabian peninsula from paganism and idolatry to worship of One God, from tribal quarrels and wars to national solidarity and cohesion, from drunkenness and debauchery to sobriety and piety, from lawlessness and anarchy to disciplined living, from utter bankruptcy to the highest standards of moral excellence. Human history has never known such a complete transformation of a people or a place before or since - and imagine all these unbelievable wonders in just over two decades.
The world has had its share of great personalities. But these were one-sided figures who distinguished themselves in but one or two fields, such as religious thought or military leadership. The lives and teachings of these great personalities of the world are shrouded in the mist of time. There is so much speculation about the time and place of their birth, the mode and style of their life, the nature and detail of their teachings and the degree and measure of their success or failure that it is impossible for humanity to reconstruct accurately the lives and teachings of these men.
Not so this man. Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, accomplished so much in such diverse fields of human thought and behavior in the fullest blaze of human history. Every detail of his private life and public utterances has been accurately documented and faithfully preserved to our day. The authenticity of the record so preserved are vouched for not only by the faithful followers but even by his prejudiced critics.
Muhammad was a religious teacher, a social reformer, a moral guide, an administrative colossus, a faithful friend, a wonderful companion, a devoted husband, a loving father - all in one. No other man in history ever excelled or equaled him in any of these different aspects of life - but it was only for the selfless personality of Muhammad to achieve such incredible perfections.
Mahatma Gandhi, speaking on the character of Muhammad, says in (Young India):
“I wanted to know the best of one who holds today’s undisputed sway over the hearts of millions of mankind....I became more than convinced that it was not the sword that won a place for Islam in those days in the scheme of life. It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet, the scrupulous regard for his pledges, his intense devotion to this friends and followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his own mission. These and not the sword carried everything before them and surmounted every obstacle. When I closed the 2nd volume (of the Prophet’s biography), I was sorry there was not more for me to read of the great life.”
Thomas Carlyle in his (Heroes and Heroworship), was simply amazed as to:
“how one man single-handedly, could weld warring tribes and wandering Bedouins into a most powerful and civilized nation in less than two decades.”
Diwan Chand Sharma wrote:
“Muhammad was the soul of kindness, and his influence was felt and never forgotten by those around him.”
(D.C. Sharma, The Prophet of the East, Calcutta, 1935, pp. 12)
Muhammad was nothing more or less than a human being. But he was a man with a noble mission, which was to unite humanity on the worship of One and Only One God and to teach them the way to honest and upright living based on the commands of God. He always described himself as, “A Servant and Messenger of God,” and so indeed every action of his proclaimed to be.
Speaking on the aspect of equality before God in Islam, the famous poetess of India, Sarojini Naidu says:
“It was the first religion that preached and practiced democracy; for, in the mosque, when the call for prayer is sounded and worshippers are gathered together, the democracy of Islam is embodied five times a day when the peasant and king kneel side by side and proclaim: ‘God Alone is Great’... I have been struck over and over again by this indivisible unity of Islam that makes man instinctively a brother.”
(S. Naidu, Ideals of Islam, vide Speeches & Writings, Madras, 1918, p. 169)
In the words of Prof. Hurgronje:
“The league of nations founded by the prophet of Islam put the principle of international unity and human brotherhood on such universal foundations as to show candle to other nations.” He continues: “The fact is that no nation of the world can show a parallel to what Islam has done towards the realization of the idea of the League of Nations.”
The world has not hesitated to raise to divinity, individuals whose lives and missions have been lost in legend. Historically speaking, none of these legends achieved even a fraction of what Muhammad accomplished. And all his striving was for the sole purpose of uniting mankind for the worship of One God on the codes of moral excellence. Muhammad or his followers never at any time claimed that he was a Son of God or the God-incarnate or a man with divinity - but he always was and is even today considered as only a Messenger chosen by God.
K. S. Ramakrishna Rao, an Indian Professor of Philosophy in his booklet, (“Muhammad, The Prophet of Islam,”) calls him the
“Perfect model for human life.”
Prof. Ramakrishna Rao explains his point by saying:
“The personality of Muhammad, it is most difficult to get into the whole truth of it. Only a glimpse of it I can catch. What a dramatic succession of picturesque scenes! There is Muhammad, the Prophet. There is Muhammad, the Warrior; Muhammad, the Businessman; Muhammad, the Statesman; Muhammad, the Orator; Muhammad, the Reformer; Muhammad, the Refuge of Orphans; Muhammad, the Protector of Slaves; Muhammad, the Emancipator of Women; Muhammad, the Judge; Muhammad, the Saint. All in all these magnificent roles, in all these departments of human activities, he is alike a hero.”
Today after a lapse of fourteen centuries, the life and teachings of Muhammad have survived without the slightest loss, alteration or interpolation. They offer the same undying hope for treating mankind’s many ills, which they did when he was alive. This is not a claim of Muhammad’s followers but also the inescapable conclusion forced upon by a critical and unbiased history.
The least you could do as a thinking and concerned human being is to stop for a moment and ask yourself: Could these statements sounding so extraordinary and revolutionary be really true? And supposing they really are true and you did not know this man Muhammad or hear about him, isn’t it time you responded to this tremendous challenge and put in some effort to know him?
It will cost you nothing but it may prove to be the beginning of a completely new era in your life.

As the officer and his entourage were travelling towards the bar, some of its inhabitants were getting acquainted. They had chosen an extremely lucky time as the group of fairly modern female writers and the ancient Greek women were all present, and had just become aware of the others’ presence.
Sappho and Arete were chatting with beer and observing the coming and goings in the bar. Simone de Beauvoir overheard this and, as would be expected, was rather surprise at hearing this tongue being used conversationally.
“Virginia,” she whispered, leaning close. “Are those two speaking ancient Greek, do you think?”
“Oh, I couldn’t say. I know only a few words.”
“Of course, I remember. You were never offered the institutional schooling, your education was your father’s library... very inspiring.”
“I must say it is a little unnerving that you know such things without me telling you,” giggled Virginia. “I am like an artifact to you.”
“You are Providence, my lady,” smiled Simone, with an exaggerated tip of her head. “You are a miracle. Now, I am certain that those two are speaking Greek - we must go find out who they are. After you, I absolutely refuse to take anything for granted.”
Grabbing Virginia by the hand, Simone led her over to the bar.
“Excuse me. My name is Simone de Beauvoir. Who might you be?” asked Simone, in rusty classicist’s Greek.
Sappho and Arete were extremely surprised at hearing someone speaking their language. The only people they had heard speaking their tongue were Oscar and the three greek men: Achilles, Patroculus and Diogenes.
“Delighted to meet you,” replied Sappho. “My name is Sappho, of Lesbos, and this is the lovely Arete of Cyrene. Your knowledge of our language seems a rare thing in these parts. But you are not Greek. Are you a local?”
Simone was speechless, agape. She shook her head.
“What is it, Simone?” Virginia whispered, noticing her disarray. “Who is she?”
“Sappho,” breathed Simone. And suddenly a wide smile spread like sunlight across her face; she laughed in disbelief. “Sappho of Lesbos.”
Virginia’s eyes widened, and she turned to Sappho in amazement.
“And who are you?” the Greek poetess asked, a smile tugging at her lips.
Virginia looked at her blankly.
“Her name is Virginia,” filled in Simone. “She speaks no Greek.”
Sappho nodded. “And where are you two from?”
Simone, at a loss for a way to describe the concept of France in ancient Greek, paused for a moment. “Gaul,” she said at last. “And…” she glanced at Virginia. “And a nearby island.”
“Oh! You are from an island as well!” Sappho laughed. “We must stay together. To be born on an island is always to risk solitude, don’t you think? Oh - my apologies - I had forgotten you didn’t speak Greek - ” she turned to Simone - “you could translate?”
Simone nodded, and translated what she had understood. Virginia smiled warmly. “Tell her I love her poetry, will you?”
Simone translated, and Sappho smiled. “What year are you from? How far through the years has my work survived?”
Simone did some quick mental arithmetic. “About 2400 years of 365 days, and probably longer.”
Virginia looked at Simone questioningly. Simone quickly translated. “I'm sure her- your- reputation has gone even further than us. I believe some of the women here are from an era after my own, we could investigate.” she suggested.
Virginia looked over the crowd and caught Marsha P. Johnson’s gaze, beckoning her over. Marsha approached curiously.
“Hello Virginia. It still feels really weird talking to you, you died four years before I was born.” she said.
“Well this will seem even more peculiar,” started Virginia excitedly, “Meet Sappho of Lesbos.”
The three women smiled as Marsha’s jaw dropped in amazement. “Really? You mean? Seriously?” Marsha saw Simone translating and understood how they were communicating.  “Well a classical education does help… Can you say hi, and that I… love her work.”
Simone took a little bit more time to explain the situation, “This is Marsha P Johnson. She is far more of a commoner than I am, and younger, but still knows all about you. She fought for,” Simone stalled. Never in her extremely formal education had she learnt how to say gay, homosexual or lesbian. “for the rights of men who love men and women who love women and…” she also didn't have a word for transgender. “Women with men's bodies and men with women's bodies.”
Sappho looked at them in confusion. “How so? How has she fought?”
Simone translated this into English; she and Marsha exchanged a glance.
“Should we tell her about it?” Marsha asked in a whisper. “Stonewall?”
Simone nodded. “I’ll do my best.” She then started with the most accurate retelling that her vocabulary would allow. “An enforcer of law came into a… wine house and arrested her because she would not reveal her genitalia, which I don’t believe correspond to her manner of dressing. She fought back.”
Sappho stared at Simone, then at Marsha, in shock and horror. “An official asked to see... that? And she got arrested when she refused? How terrible has the world become… Please tell me it is not that bad in other lands.”
Simone shook her head, “Other countries would have put her to death.”
Sappho looked like she was going to add something, but at that point the officer burst into the room and it silenced.
“Right, is everyone looking at me? Can you all hear me? I’m looking for anyone hear who thinks they’re in the wrong decade or century. Anyone who feels out of place in this time?”
At this point, Alan Turing, Siegfried Sassoon, Wilfred Owen, Frida Kahlo, Rosa Luxemburg, Virginia Woolf, Simone De Beauvoir, Sappho, Arete and Kristina, as well as Erin and Tina, stepped forward, accompanied by a loose assembly of gangly nineteen-year-olds in classic rock tees too much black eyeliner. Erin and Tina looked at the group and laughed.
“He means people who were born in the wrong decade, you sure that applies to you?” asked Erin.
The teens nodded blandly; Erin shrugged and turned back to Kristina.
“Is this everyone? The ones who don’t speak English - Greeks? Some of you? I think? Is that all under control?” He caught a nod from Simone. “Great. Now, listen, I don’t know how much you’ve already figured out, but there’s some stuff I need to tell you all. I’m gonna need you to cooperate. I’ve arrested four of you already, and that’s enough for me, thank you very much. Is there - are you - is someone translating for whoever needs it?” A second nod from Simone. “Perfect. So. You’ve all just sort of… well, turned up, and it’s all very unexpected, and nobody’s really sure what to do with you. That’s pretty much clear to you all?”
A nod from the assortment of punk-rock teens had Erin laughing as the officer went on.
“You’re probably all pretty disorientated, why don’t we step outside so I can talk about integration. I’ve contacted a job club, and they’ve been very helpful and gotten a large number of offers. I’ll show you everything, and get you registered in the government once we’ve gotten to my office.”
The pile of young adults looked at each other unsure, but tagged along anyway. Most could do with a hand finding a job anyway. Erin glanced back at them, but they still seemed to think they were in the right place, so she shrugged and left them to it.
When the last members of the group had trailed into the police station, the officer sighed, sat down at his desk, and dug out a pile of paperwork.
“Now, I checked this with the mayor and she says the system uses your birthday to identify you and to give you an age so I suggest that you fill it in with the real day and month of your birth, then take your age away from this year - 2017 - and write that down. Other than that, stick to the truth. We’re not sure how this is going to work, but it’s worth a try, right?”
A murmur - “Two thousand-... did you hear that?” - went through the room, but most of the group set to work without much question, too overwhelmed by their new surroundings to question the decision. The modern teens stood around awkwardly, wondering what was going on, but too intrigued to leave just yet.
The officer turned to them after handing out papers to everyone in the room.
“Are you - you all speak English, right? - did you change your clothes since you got here? Where’s all that makeup from? I thought you were all, like, eighteenth-century intellectuals or whatever.”
“What?” asked one of them. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Can you tell me when you were born?”
“I didn’t do anything! You’ve got the wrong guy, officer!”
“Don’t worry,” the officer laughed. “I’m not trying to arrest you. The thing is, for the last couple days, we’ve had a bit of an issue at that bar back there. Some freaky sci-fi time-travel thing -” he stopped, and sighed - “I know I sound like I’m batshit insane, but I swear to God, yesterday I had to arrest William bloody Shakespeare, so I figured I had to do something before it all got way, way out of hand. I guess that’s new information to you?”
The teens nodded.
“We could, like, help, though,” one of them added.
“Can we meet Shakespeare?”
“Are those people in, like, togas - are they, like, actual Greeks?”
“Greece is a country, Harold,” came the sarcastic reply.
“You know what I mean.”
The officer interrupted them. “Hey, I just thought of something. Do any of you have extra beds at home? None of these people have any real money on them, and they’ll need papers before we can find them serious jobs. We can’t afford to keep them all at the motel forever.”
There were a few volunteers. Some knew people who might be able to help. The officer went on: “I’m going to need to check in with you in a couple of days to see how it’s going. How about Saturday? Show up here whenever?”
Erin broke in. “I don’t think we’ll be able to make it for Saturday. Pride is all day long, and I’ve got a space saved for the float I’ve been working on.”
“Oh my god,” cut in Tina. “Oh… my god. Pride. Erin, these people have never been to pride.”
Erin’s eyes lit up. “This is going to be incredible.”
“How’s the float going? Is there still time for some changes? I just had the coolest idea,” Tina gushed. “It’s gonna be the best parade you’ve ever seen.”
“Oh,” Erin laughed, eyes wide with excitement. “Oh, absolutely. I might need some help, but...” she turned to look at Kristina. “I don’t think we’re really lacking volunteers, if you know what I mean. My house at eight tomorrow? We’ll need all the time we have.”
The idea of the project was explained to the roomful of historical figures, along with a quick overview of the concept of pride and a gesture-filled description of a parade float. It didn’t take much to convince them to participate.

Last week marked the release of an album I’ve been impatiently awaiting: Josh Garrels’ new LP, Chrysaline. To be honest, I was kind of apprehensive. I wondered how this new record would fare next to Josh’s last two releases, Home, and its Christmas counterpart, The Light Came Down. These two records had, in many ways, raised the bar for Josh’s music. What would he do next? I’ve been (virtually) spinning this new record over the past week, while chasing late-summer sunsets. Now, though I hadn’t planned to, I’m writing down some of my musings on Chrysaline: a record which has taken me by joyful surprise.

Chrysaline feels like its name: a renewal, an awakening. If I were to sum up what’s happening sonically, I might look to the cover artwork as a visual reflection. There are flourishes of brilliant color accented by a dark and dense backdrop. Like the artwork, the songs have a kind of symmetry. A balance and appropriation to the sounds; each element tasteful and in a fitting place.
The production on every song is top notch; just what I would expect from a Garrels record. There are some amazing moments. Josh is stretching his vocals in new ways and I am loving it! In short, it is a beautiful record.
Yet for all of Chrysaline’s beauty, its opening words paint a not-so-pretty picture:
“Every mouth is like an open grave / No one searches for Your face / There are none righteous ones among / All of us have gone astray”
But the darkness of humanity’s rebellion against its Maker is soon pierced through by brilliant light:
“But You came and gave Yourself away / You are, the only one there is / Only by Your blood can we be saved / Oh Lord, this is a gift, from You”
The second verse builds in musical and lyrical momentum:
“Those who dwell in dark will see the light / Perfect love has found a way / To be the just and justifier of / Those who call Your name by faith…”
Then the name is uttered in a desperate, piercing cry:
“…Jesus!”
It’s a stunning opening track musically, and also for its message. There can be no theme more moving to me than the the gospel of Jesus Christ. One might say Chrysaline is, essentially, a musical celebration of the gospel.
This record is unique among Josh’s discography for its lyrical genre. It is comprised entirely of psalms and hymns. Sacred songs. Josh draws from old and modern writers of the church in songs like “Consecration” and “Perfect Love,” the former a hymn text written in 1874 by poetess Frances Havergal, and the latter by modern hymnist Wesley Eader. Josh makes contributions of his own with songs such as “Closer than a Brother,” “Anchor of My Soul,” and “The Banner.” But Chrysaline is unique: it’s not a hymns album, and it doesn’t fit the mold of modern “worship” music. It’s something new.
In some ways Chrysaline reminds me of Josh’s 2011 release, Love & War & the Sea In Between (my introduction to his music). Chrysaline, like Love & War, runs over one hour in playing time, yet is diverse and engaging—and I don’t mind an epically long album if it engages me! Like Love & War, Chrysaline is rich in scriptural themes and imagery, only showing further theological maturity. Chrysaline’s scriptural depth is a refreshing thing. There was this time I was grooving to “Butterfly” (from which the name "Chrysaline” comes), when a Bible study jumped out of the second verse:
“I’m a worm not a man / Take me to the garden / Bury me inside my skin / Lord make me whole again”
Beautiful imagery. It’s right out of Psalm 22, David’s prophetic lament fulfilled by Christ on the cross. Jesus was that crimson worm, “marred beyond human semblance,” making a way for us—if we are willing to take part in his death, and to be buried (in the garden tomb) with him—to one day share in his glorious resurrection.
There’s strength in simplicity, sometimes. I love the simple yet profound prayer that is “Invocation.” I was struck by that same glorious simplicity in “What a Friend”:
“What a friend we have in Jesus / What a friend we have in Jesus / What a friend”
“Greater love has no man / Than he who lays down his life for a friend”
Listening through the album, I hear elements from a kaleidoscope of musical cultures: South American (“Consecration”), African (“Praise Him”), Middle-Eastern and Indian (“Invocation”), even East Asian (“Closer Than a Brother”). There’s Americana (“Perfect Love”) and of course, the soul is still strong!
After hearing “Butterfly,” my brother made comment on its sound, saying it felt like a natural fit for Josh’s vocal style. I agree: Josh is more in his element now than ever!
The soul / R&B on this record is absolutely groovy. “The Banner,” for instance, is a beautiful and memorable track, and one of my favorites. It feels like it might have been produced in a time machine. Organ, layered vocals, lush strings, even a blazing electric guitar solo at the end. It’s Jesus Music resurrected! It even fades out at the end in true 80s fashion. “Follow” is another pretty song from the same creative vein. Why be current when you can be timeless?
There’s also some really brilliant programming on this record. A couple of highlights for me: the swelling, brooding bass on “Closer Than a Brother,” and the shimmering keys at the end of “Anchor for My Soul.” The programming doesn’t overwhelm. It’s tasteful, and it sort of fills in and melds the other musical elements together.
In “Praise Him,” Josh revisits the experimentation of “Always,” the maverick track off of Home. “Praise Him” is another highlight for me. The drums and choir vocals give a lucid energy to the song. The words of the last verse, I feel, are timely:
“Let all pray / And stay awake / My Lord, He won’t delay / So I keep that oil on the flame / This darkness will soon fade away / Then I will see Him face to face / And I will // Praise Him…”
As the record comes to a close it slows pace with two softer songs, and I want to pay special attention to them.
“Don’t Be Afraid” is my favorite song off of Chrysaline, at least for now. It was the one which instantly connected with me. It has a reflective and nostalgic sound and I love the rich, resonating harmonies. It sits in just the right spot on the track list. It’s a song of admonishment and encouragement from one believer to another. For some reason this song just really grabs me. I love it.
Then comes “Take, Eat” and the soaring, resounding vocals of the previous track become intimate and soft. The words are brought into focus as Josh sings them slowly, yet with grace:
“Take, eat / This is My body / Broken for your healing / This is My blood / Shed for remission / And forgiveness of your sin”
“Do this to remember what I’ve done for you / Do this to remember Me”
That the songs on this record continually bring me back to the cross, and the love of the Savior for me, is a precious, precious thing—I can never hear of that enough.
Then “Evangeline” closes the record with an explosion of color. It’s an exuberant orchestral piece, giving occasion to reflect, and to rejoice. We’ve been given so much in our dear Savior, Jesus. If you listen really carefully at the very end of the song, you’ll hear the voices of the Garrels family, and little Poppy Evangeline Garrels—she sounds adorable!
I’m grateful for Chrysaline. I’m grateful for people like Josh who let the gospel continue to break them and reshape them—and remake them. What comes out is something they can’t take credit for, because it points to the amazing grace of God. Thank you, Josh, for your willingness to be a vessel. Continue to be weak that Christ would be strong in you.

In closing, I would like to recommend Josh Garrels’ Chrysaline. I may, in fact, have found my album of the year!

Meet the Most Inspirational Women Chef in World of Fine Food
(Bloomberg) –Cooking is gender neutral. The restaurant world is not.
Male chefs tend to garner more attention than women by almost any measure, from Michelin stars though TV shows to accolades such as the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, where only five females make the cut. So who are the most admired women in gastronomy?
We asked leading chefs from around the world for their thoughts. Here are some of their favorites.
Pia León, Lima
León has won many accolades and is half of a power couple with husband Vigilio Martinez at Central restaurant. “Pia is as strong or even stronger,” says chef Ana Roš of Hiša Franko. “She is an amazing chef, mum and wife but she remains humble.” (Martinez cites her, too: “It’s not just that I love her so much but I witness her work every day, first at Central and now at her own place, Kjolle.)
Nieves Barragan, London
Spanish chef Barragan has made a splash in London with great ingredients, big flavors and authentic cooking, first at Barrafina and now at her own restaurant Sabor. Italian-born Francesco Mazzei of Sartoria is among her fans. “She is the most amazing, talented cook,” he says. “So humble. Always happy. Her food reflects her personality: It’s joyous.”
Asma Khan, London
Kolkata-born Khan has been empowering immigrant women at Darjeeling Express in London. (She recently featured in Chef’s Table.) “I admire Asma for teaching all of us that women rule the kitchen – whether they are professional chefs, or come from a non-culinary background,” says Selin Kiazim of Oklava in London. “What matters is passion and dedication, not gender and pedigree.”
Ravinder Bhogal, London
Bhogal is a Kenyan-born former journalist who shows a highly personal style of cooking at her restaurant Jikoni. She’s the pick of the British chef and food writer Romy Gill. “I have known Rav for seven years and followed her journey,” she says. “What I really like about her is that whatever she is doing, she gets on and works at it. She is a wonderful, talented person whom I admire a lot.”
Manu Buffara, Curitiba, Brazil
Buffara focuses on social and environmental issues at her restaurant Manu in her hometown in southern Brazil, where she works with the community and local producers. Her admirers include Virgilio Martinez of Central, in Lima. He says: “Her work on Brazilian nature and education is outstanding. Her approach and her understanding of food goes beyond her restaurant.”
Dominique Crenn, San Francisco
The three-Michelin star chef of Atelier Crenn in San Francisco is chosen by chefs Nieves Barragan, Kyle Connaughton, Helene Darroze, Martha Ortiz and Clare Smyth. Darroze says: “She is an amazing chef with such a personal style. I also admire her for her engagements: Protecting the environment, sustainability, and the place of women in our industry.” Ortiz says: “She is a poetess of flavors and an extraordinary woman.” Barragan says: “She’s an extremely powerful force in the industry and such a strong character. She’s a great inspiration.” Connaughton says: “She’s a visionary, a leader, and a fighter.”
Angela Hartnett, London
Hartnett is one of the best-loved chefs in the U.K., known for her no-nonsense style and her modern Italian cooking at the Michelin-starred Murano. Ravinder Bhogal of Jikoni says: “I respect her as a profoundly skilled chef. I admire her work ethic and the way she has built her group of restaurants and her career before then. She is very down to earth and kind but I am always a little starstruck.”
Ruth Rogers, London
American-born Rogers created the River Café in London in 1987 with her friend and business partner Rose Gray. It is still going strong as one of the most-revered restaurants in the U.K. It’s the pick of Daniel Humm, whose Eleven Madison Park in New York is a winner of the title of World’s Best Restaurant. He’s a fan and friend. “Ruth is so consistent and so true to her vision,” he says.
Anne-Sophie Pic, Valence, France
Pic has won many accolades, including three Michelin stars at Maison Pic in southeast France and two each for her restaurants in London and Lausanne. Clare Smyth of Core by Clare Smyth, in London, names Pic and Crenn among her favorite chefs. “They are absolutely incredible chefs at the top of their game and incredible human beings,” Smyth says. Monica Galetti of Mere, in London, is another fan: “I’ve always admired Anne-Sophie’s calm air and style of cooking. She is just amazing.”
Carme Ruscalleda, Barcelona
The Catalan chef won three Michelin stars at Sant Pau restaurant and now is in charge at Moments in Barcelona, where she is known for innovative dishes based on the region’s cuisine. She’s the choice of another three-star chef, Elena Arzak of Arzak. “I greatly admire Carmen Ruscalleda for her whole career and for being so human,” Arzak says.
Elena Reygadas, Mexico City
The chef behind Rosetta in Mexico City studied at the International Culinary Center in New York and worked at Locanda Locatelli in London. She’s the pick of chef Rosio Sanchez, of Sanchez, in Copenhagen. “She is so down to earth, smart, and creates super tasty food,” Sanchez says. “She’s not super-in-your-face like most chefs, she has a quiet and confident charming personality.”
Helena Puolakka, Helsinki
Finnish-born Puolakka of Savoy in Helsinki trained under some of the big beasts of European gastronomy, including Pierre Gagnaire and Gordon Ramsay, as well as Pierre Koffmann who cites her as a favorite. “She is a brilliant chef and an extraordinary woman,” he says. “She worked for me for years and used to run my restaurant. She was very bossy in the kitchen but she is a top-quality chef.”
Nadia Santini, Canneto sull’Oglio, Italy
Santini combines classic French and Italian cooking at Dal Pescatore, in northern Italy. Anne-Sophie Pic describes her as a friend and inspiration, like her fellow French chef Michel Bras. “I have long felt a little lonely because of my history, being self-taught, being a woman, having to be accepted in a world more masculine than feminine,” she says. “Michel Bras, self-taught, managed to have three stars, Nadia Santini, a woman, managed to have three stars. They were real guides for me.”
Clare Smyth, London
Smyth was long the guardian of Gordon Ramsay’s three Michelin stars and now has two of her own at Core by Clare Smyth. She’s chosen by three-star chef Kyle Connaughton at SingleThread, in Healdsburg, California. “I am really inspired by her,” he says. “She’s not only cooking some of the most amazing looking food in the whole world right now with so much thoughtful intent she’s also an incredible leader and stands for so many of the values for where we should be heading as an industry.”
Helena Rizzo, São Paulo
Rizzo owns Maní restaurant in São Paulo, where she creates modern dishes with Brazilian ingredients. She’s the choice of restaurateur (and former DJ) Layo Paskin of Palomar in London. “Brazil was my second home for over 15 years and I chose Helena because of the combination of the produce from Brazil with the techniques she has learnt made for a super exciting experience.”
Saima Thompson, London
Thompson was 29 when she was diagnosed with cancer and is known for her blog Curry and Cancer as well as for serving authentic Punjabi food with her mother Nabeela at the Masala Wala Cafe in Brockley. She’s the pick of Asma Khan of Darjeeling Express. “Saima is spending time between the restaurant and raising awareness of cancer and prejudice of cancer in the BAME community,” she says.

We Carry the Sky by McKayla Robbin

In her first collection of poetry, McKayla Robbin grows language "like wildflowers / from the wounds / that for years / would not close up." Simultaneously vulnerable and fierce, her short-form poems engage themes of femininity, identity, violence, and healing.
I have held nothing but pure excitement over McKayla Robbin's first, self-published, poetry collection, We Carry the Sky from day one. I heard nothing but rave reviews. I knew I needed to get my hands on this collection at some point this year. When the opportunity to read and own it feel into my lap, I literally did a dance for joy. I devoured We Carry the Sky in one sitting. It is a quick and absolutely life changing read. It is magic, empowerment, a reminder and a call to arms. It is a confession, raw and real. It is feminist as fuck!
“all women carry the sky inside of them didn’t your mother ever tell you that?”
I will never stop thinking about this collection. I want to re-read it every day for the rest of my life. I want to put a copy into the hands of every woman, man, child. This is the kind of poetry collection that I wish came into my life ages ago. It is so important. McKayla is an amazing writer, as well as a powerful and amazing woman. She hopes that her work will empower all woman and inspire marginalized people to rise up and share their voices. I am beyond grateful that McKayla has weaved these words and gifted them to the world. Thank you will never feel like enough.
