I am high on weed and NyQuil and yet am still awake because a bad cough and a fever and for some reason decided it was a good idea to read the AC Odyssey Novelization! Here are some random things that stuck out that I think you should know:

Kassandra’s hears Nikolaos’ lessons in her head throughout the book.

She also loves Phoibe so much but tries so hard to pretend she doesn’t because her mother told her that love is weakness when she was a kid.

Kassandra finds Ikaros as a hatchling taking shelter among the bones at the bottom of Mount Taygetos.

It’s mostly from Kassandra’s POV but there’s some other brief POVs too. The Cult POVs seem to exist pretty much make sure that the reader knows they’re like super fucking evil and Stentor’s few POVs are mostly to bitch about Kassandra.

In one of his less bitchy POVs it’s revealed that a Spartan soldier in Megaris tried to grab Kassandra and kiss her and she either full on broke or just badly bruised his jaw

Building off that sorta, the only person Kassandra even kisses is Alkibiades at the symposium, and mostly to get information.

Nikolaos’ fate is left ambiguous for a long time.

Someone mocks Barnabas’ storytelling in line to see the Oracle and Herodotos later sets the guards on him to provide a distraction so Kassandra can sneak back and talk with the Oracle more.

The Cultists are way less protective of their identities in Delphi and way more obvious with their plans to get rid of Deimos. Also, Kassandra kills a lot of them on accident.

Aspasia keeps Kassandra from drinking poisoned wine, courtesy of Hermippos, at the symposium and helps her escape Athens

Chrysis is killed by her own biological son, the priest Dolpos who helped Myrrine, in revenge for both taking his tongue and killing countless children over the years.

Kassandra and Brasidas’ super badass warehouse fight doesn’t happen. Instead they are discovered by the Monger and taken captive and rescued by two heterae prisoners after the Monger burns Kassandra’s legs with an iron poker.

Phoibe dies playing hide and seek with Kassandra as they escort Perikles to see the Parthenon one last time and Kassandra first realizes something is wrong because she can’t hear Phoibe’s giggles anymore 😭

The first time Kassandra cries after that night on Taygetos is when Phoibe dies.

Aspasia only fully decides to leave the cult after Perikles’ death.

Pausanias’ super secret cult nickname is the Red Eyed Lion and he is uncovered because of a wine stained map or letter or something and a ring seal of a lion and some other super circumstantial evidence.

When they return to Sparta, Barnabas and the crew somehow temporarily sink the Adrestia in a cove to keep from being spotted by Spartan scouts.

The Kos and Arkadia storylines don’t happen at all and the Olympics happen after Kassandra and Myrrine already got their house.

At one point, Kassandra refers to her new family as Myrrine, Barnabas, Herotodos, and Brasidas, which made my shipper heart happy. Then in that same paragraph she refers to Herodotos and Brasidas as something like proud uncles, so we’re pretending that doesn’t exist

Kassandra is imprisoned in Athens for months and like in the game, is “rescued” by Barnabas and Sokrates. Barnabas still has his shovel but Sokrates has a broom instead of a pitchfork.

Also, there’s a small subplot about the woman Barnabas has a fling with on Naxos and her husband who Herodotos met that visited Thera. He’s being tortured by the Cult when Kassandra is imprisoned in Athens and is brutally murdered when he refuses to tell them anything.

Kleon was 100% planing to kill Deimos at Amphipolis.

Brasidas basically dies telling Kassandra how happy he is to see her what the fuck???

A lot of the confrontation on Taygetos is the same as the good ending of the game, where Deimos tells Kassandra that he’s done terrible things. But he also tells her that he can’t change no matter how much he wants to while preparing to throw a knife at Myrrine so she kills him.

Nikolaos and Stentor watch Alexios’ funeral at a distance until Kassandra and Myrrine invite them to join them for dinner.

Kassandra doesn’t fight the Minotaur and Co. but is just given the staff by Pythagoras, who talks to her after his death through the pyramid.

Aspasia’s fate is somewhat left ambiguous in the end because Kassandra’s focused too much on the vision from the pyramid.

Overall, it read a little bit like a weird fanfic! I saw glimpses of the characters we love from the game but since the author cut out such big pieces of the plot and every side quest - which makes sense since it was a very short book - we didn’t get to see too much of them either. Except for Kassandra, who is a lot more no nonsense than I imagine her as. There’s no flirting or and very little joking, but I really liked her resourcefulness and unique fighting style. And her love for Phoibe and her family that shines like a beacon throughout the entire book, from the very beginner where her mother tells her it is unspartan to love. Of course, our lovely Kassandra is a lover and a fighter and that does not change no matter what ❤️

If Kassandra didn't have access to any of her superpowers, how do you think she would fare against Lara Croft in a one-on-one fight? What about Nadine from Uncharted or Abby from the Last of Us? My opinion changes depending on if normal weapons like guns or bows are allowed. If no weapons are allowed, I honestly think Abby would win, but no one else would. If normal weapons are allowed, it gets more complicated. I would be interested to hear what you think.

ooh, great question! And one that's difficult to answer—as you pointed out, it really depends on the situation.

My glib answer is that as a writer, I could show any of these characters defeating any other in a realistic way that you'd believe. That's my superpower.

So without going back to you and asking for more specifics, the best I can do is walk you through my thought process for writing a believable action scene between two characters.

The first thing I think about is the situation and setting: Where are they fighting? When are they fighting? What universe are they in? Are they in our reality as we know it, or the mostly-realistic-with-a-dash-of-fantasy worlds of AC: Odyssey or the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, or somewhere else entirely?

The situation and setting are crucial. Kassandra and Lara fighting in a traditional dojo would be much different than having them fight in a pine forest, or the war-torn Athens of AC:O, or a mining base on Mars. As Kassandra says to Kyra in The Breaking: "I'm surrounded by weapons." The setting determines what unconventional weapons might be at hand, if any, what cover is available, what bystanders or dangers might need to be accounted for.

Once I've established the setting of the scene, I start thinking about weapons in more detail. Do the combatants have formal training? What kinds of weapons and how much actual combat usage? How does the universe they're in treat weapons? As much as I love AC:O, that game puts all types of melee weapons on equal footing regardless of reach (length). It works within that universe because the game is consistent about its combat, but in the real world a dagger is no match for a polearm and that's fact.

Weapons tilt the table. Think of the moment in the Tomb Raider reboot where Lara gets that first gun. Her opponents could have 20 years of martial arts training and outweigh her by 50kg, but that doesn't matter a whit against a ranged firearm. The gun is the equalizer.

Setting matters. Weapons matter. Only when those parameters are sorted do I consider the physical abilities and hand-to-hand combat experience of the respective fighters. There are so many what-ifs to consider, and making everything fit together makes for a good logic puzzle. (And I haven't even gotten into the characterization aspects of writing action: not everyone has a killer instinct, and that matters!)

But let's go back to your original question and simplify things by thinking of the most basic scenario for unarmed combat: a bout taking place in the real world, in a neutral location like a dojo.

Even without superpowers, Kassandra is an impressive physical specimen. She has the strength to overpower opponents and the advantage of reach. She'd have a disadvantage in endurance, however, since all that muscle mass she's carrying is going to need energy to move it. (A good example of "strength vs endurance" affecting muscle mass can be seen in sprinters vs marathon runners.)

We'd also have to establish which Kassandra is fighting: young Kassandra (as we meet her in Kephallonia) or Kassandra at the top of her game, winner of the Olympic pankration and honed by at least five years of fighting damn near every mercenary and soldier of renown in ancient Greece.

To defeat her in unarmed combat in the real world, an opponent would have to:

outmatch her in physical ability and have just enough hand-to-hand combat experience to use it to their advantage, or

equal her in physical ability and hand-to-hand combat experience, or

have so much more experience that they could overcome all of her other advantages

That's a tough ask, and I don't really see Lara, Nadine, or Abby having enough hand-to-hand combat experience to pull it off, even against a young, less experienced Kassandra. I think Abby would come the closest, and if she went off and studied a bunch of hand-to-hand styles intensively for several years she'd make it an even fight.

So, to recap: it's definitely possible to contrive situations where one of them could defeat a non-superpowered Kassandra. I'd choose a setting and weapons that would support the challenger's strengths, and adjust Kassandra's experience accordingly.

Setting matters. Weapons matter. Experience matters.

okay what I can say so far about the novel and I‘ve only read the prologue and the first chapter

- kassandra very often talks about trauma from her past including the views that sparta instilled in her.

- she loved her family very much but already then was taught to suppress it because it‘s not the spartan way.

- she suppresses them but in the interactions with phoibe is unable to and even describes this. phoibe is family to her, someone she needs to care for.

-when confronted with markos foolishness she is talking about herself and phoibe together. they are a package.

idek how to bundle it all I might just post photos of text and translate.

I usually don't like novelization of movies or games but the novelization of AC Odyssey is interesting because it gives a humanity to the violence and bloodshed that the game really lacks. Reading about Kassandra's thoughts as she fights alongside Stentor in Megaris, her desperation to meet Nikolaos. Taygetos mirrorized on their meeting on the cliff. Honestly, begrudgingly, I'm enjoying this book.

emily wilson out here translating the iliad and i am once again wishing i knew how to read and translate ancient greek

What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

A Shield Against the Dark - Part one of the Undertale odyssey that started out as trying to work out a couple of things before getting the story I actually wanted to write. Which has yet to be written.

Adventures in Human Sitting - Undertale shenanigans exploring what happens when a human is raised by a bunch of well-meaning monsters who don't quite know what they're doing.

The Monster Files - What happens when human authorities attempt to investigate these strange new monstrous arrivals in the overworld by hacking into the Monster Embassy computer networks, with predictably unpredictable (and occasionally pasta-filled) results.

Hushabye - Undertale fluff between Frisk and Sans, originally written as an exercise to hammer out the weird tonal push and pull of their platonic soulmate thing.

To Heir is Human - More Undertale fluff (yeah there's a theme) in which Asgore and Toriel have to deal with their incredibly complex feelings when Frisk falls ill (featuring Sans's reaction as well by request).

I'm honestly really surprised there's no TMNT on this, actually.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes. Unless it's something that's un-respond-able, I do try to respond to everything. When my brain breaks I tend to avoid the inbox out of guilt, but I do get there eventually. Even if it takes a few years.

What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

That Which Is Not Done, for sure. It's the prequel story about the parents of the four turtle kids from the Children of the Forest TMNT AU I started writing with @nicollini, and since the turtles are orphans being raised by Splinter, the ending was already written for me, and I think I cried more writing this one than any other. It's far enough removed from the source material that it could read as a standalone, and there's still hope to be found in it, but it's definitely a tougher read than most of my fluff.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I don't think I can pick. Most of what I write tends to end on a high note (if it ends at all -- my brain rewiring itself to deal with stress and paving over the writing parts kind of put a lot on indefinite hiatus). If I have to pick, probably Little Gifts because it's also full of holiday fluff.

Do you get hate on fics?

Generally no, and not on AO3. There was one several-hundred-word hit piece on That Other Site about how my story was trash and so was I, and if I'm being honest, it's a big part of why my cross-posting to that site kind of fell off a bit.

Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Not really. I tend to do fade-to-black if anything, because I tend to write what interests me, and my little ace heart is just way more interested in platonic soulmates than anything else. There is a ridiculous amount of platonic cuddling though.

Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Generally no, with the very notable exception of the TMNT/Pacific Rim crossover series. I had also intended the big Undertale story to be a crossover with another property, but I'm not actually sure if I want to go that route any more. Time will tell (I hope).

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

I don't actually know. I think someone reposted Falling without permission once.

Have you ever had a fic translated?

Not to my knowledge.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Not to completion (not for lack of trying -- brains are fickle), but there are a lot of collaborations and pieces of fics that started out as co-written stories and/or roleplays and/or art that were repurposed (with permission) into stories on the TMNT side of things.

What's your all-time favorite ship?

It takes a lot for me to actually ship something, but notable ones are Shepard/Garrus, John Crichton/Aeryn Sun, and I got a huge kick out of Luz and Amity on Owl House.

What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I'm not going to answer this one because I don't want to curse anything. I really do hope to tie off all the loose ends eventually. That said, the one that's a massive mashup of ALL THE TMNT AUS AT ONCE will probably stay at one chapter, just because it's so dang hard to write.

What are your writing strengths?

Before the brain break, probably dialogue, largely because it would just happen in my head and I'd frantically write to keep up. I like to think exploring relationships that don't get that much focus in canon is also something I'm pretty good at, but I may just think that because it takes up so much space in my head.

What are your writing weaknesses?

Finishing things. Curse of the ADHD brain even before the break.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Only if necessary for the mechanics of the story, and then I try to find someone who actually speaks the language to help (and now that I'm older and wiser, hire).

First fandom you wrote for?

TMNT 2012. There had been countless stories in my head since I was a wee Fantasia, but that was the first one that wouldn't leave me alone until I wrote it down. There were just so many spaces between canon scenes that made me want to see what fit in there, and since they weren't getting explored in the show, I ended up writing Falling, and that led me to everything else.

Favorite fic you've ever written?

I can't choose. It depends on my mood. Whichever one is the one I need most to read at the time (which also happens to be my rationale for writing order).

My top 6 dimension 20 shows ranked with little to no context

So all you DnD dropout girlies know dimension 20 has some excellent excellent content. I started my actual play watching with D20 so I am, of course, biased, but I just prefer watching something that well edited with a range of play styles and game familiarity. The fact that some of the tables have players who have played for decades and others who are starting their first game is really great. The diverse, laugh-out-loud but somehow also make-you-want-to-cry game play is just unmatched. So, I decided to be moderately unhinged this Sunday afternoon and rank my favorite dimension 20 shows as of February 2023. 

1. A Court of Fey and Flowers: Listen I was promised Bridgeton in the feywilds and Aabria Iyengar delivered. The epistolary phase! My ace pillar boy really doing the most. The “I’m taking my suitcase out on a walk.” Not to mention the fact that Jeremy Renner is an NPC. 

2. The Seven: I am nothing if not chaotic and I did, in fact, start my D20 watching with this show. The horse-girl energy was giving what it needed to give. The teamwork was excellent. I also love them. So there. 

3. The Neverafter: As a medieval-early modern girly with a hunger for oral tradition and retellings, this show is my catnip. It is at number three because we are only halfway through the season, but I am having a great time. Every time Emily or Siobhan light up at myth recognition, I too am excited. Also, death is everywhere so that’s a nice touch. 

4. Misfits and Magic: If I want to recommend someone watch a manageably small campaign this is what I recommend. All the PCs know how to craft the worst person to go to wizard school, which is glorious. Plus it is non-TERF wizard school content which we always appreciate in fandom spaces. Of course, you should also watch the holiday special, but yes, Aabria is an excellent GM once again.

5. A Starstruck Odyssey: It’s a campaign based on Elaine Lee’s before it’s time graphic novel series. Of course, this is Brennan (give the monster a cookie) Lee Mulligan’s mother and their interviews explain so much about him as a person. The world-building, character, and story arcs are impeccable. See you in the stars forever and always. 

6. Fantasy High: I gotta include an oldie but a goodie. Will never be over watching this group work through teen adventurer problems. But also, unmatched NPCs. Bill Seacaster! Cathilda Ceíli! Wilma and Digby Thistlespring! Sklonda Gukgak! Our yogurt icon Gilear Faeth! Ayda Aguefort! All very good people who live rent-free in my mind. 

So I hope this moderately chaotic list was, if nothing else, fun to read. Stay nerdy intrepid heroes!

I've been really thinking about Valhalla lately and the way the story played out from my perspective as a player who solely plays f!Eivor and how that plays into the larger AC franchise. And I'll say that my hottest take is that if Eivor Varinsdottir was supposed to be canon, then they shouldn't have had the m!Eivor option at all.

And like, I get Ubisoft is a deeply misogynistic developer and this is not at all a new criticism, but just think about how much more depth to the entire world of the Assassins and Templars there would be if we actually had like, real female characters, let alone playable characters.

I've only played Odyssey and Valhalla because those are the only games I give a fuck about, but my point remains. The depth in those two games would have been amazing had they focused on one female protagonist and not making the game as gender neutral as possible so that misogynistic fan boys can keep their power fantasies and never have to consider a perspective outside their own while the rest of the world does.

Like Eivor would have had a MUCH more interesting story if she had to deal with the fact that she was a Norse woman in 9th century England. That changes the WHOLE STORY.

Dag would have had a legitimate reason to be mad at Eivor for using the power and authority lent to her by Sigurd. Sigurd would have had a real reason to be so dismissive of Eivor's input into his decisions. The Christians would have had one more reason to despise Eivor and the Raven Clan, not only are they heathens but Eivor is a woman daring to defy her social position.

The world of Assassins Creed would have had leagues more depth to it if the creators acknowledged that being a competent gender role defying woman is SO different from being a competent dude. Eivor should have had a million more roadblocks ahead of her as a woman trying to lead a clan in 9th century England.

And the worst part? We know it's not a research problem and we know it's not a "we don't believe women had those problems" thing either. Because RANDVI IS RIGHT THERE.

Randvi is one of the more important female characters in Valhalla and her backstory includes marrying a man she didn't know for the sake of securing an alliance. This isn't about shipping or anything, that's just basic info about Randvis character. And it doesn't take a genius or a historian to know that her situation is not a novel one, that happened over and over again throughout all of history. We KNOW that Randvi's story is not a unique one, and it's actively acknowledged in the game! So playing an entire game as a hyper competent female leader, who is also surrounded by plenty of competent female NPCs, fell REALLY flat for me when we see other characters face the woman-problem (AKA being a woman trying to get anything done at that time in that place) and Eivor never once faces it.

No one says "why should we listen to you, you're a woman" even when you are playing female eivor because that's how the game has to be for those who play male eivor. But I'm sorry I get that shit now as a woman who knows what she's talking about in this time, at this place. Eivor should not have been an exception. We see her regularly prove her mettle to other characters for different reasons (you're a heathen, you're a stranger, you're not from around here) but never the most OBVIOUS barrier being "you're a woman."

And I'm not saying that Eivor shouldn't have been a badass warrior or anything. In fact, it would add so much depth to her character to think about how different she is in comparison to the women around her who DO follow the expected gender roles of the time.

Eivor's parents died when she was young. We know that her mother was a competent enough warrior to hold her own in battle. That would not be surprising to me and it wouldn't have broken my suspension of disbelief. But when you think about Eivor and this pivotal moment to her character, knowing that she was a child of a nobleman and would be raised by both parents to be able to fight and be of noble blood, the fact that she's rather rough and tumble, focused on fighting and valhalla, then it really raises some questions.

If Varin and Rosta hadn't died, would Eivor be a viking? She probably would have had a better political education. She wouldn't be fumbling her way through leadership the way that she does in game. She'd probably have to be more clever because she has to manipulate her way through society, instead of blustering and fighting.

She'd also probably be married. Either to someone she cared about, or to someone politically viable like Randvi and Sigurd. She would have had her father choose a match for her, and she'd probably have little say in the match as well.

But styrbjorn raised her "as his own." So she learned to fight and became a viking. But that doesn't change the fact that she came from a noble family. She would not be so high status if she didn't come from a noble high status family. The idea that she doesn't behave like the other noble born women around her is kind of a key characteristic. And it's never brought to the front or explored because that would break the immersion for the fan boys who'd rather play as Havi.

Anyway this is my thesis for many of my fics because there's just so much there that is completely ignored because it literally CANT be explored if Eivor is a man. Ubisoft for the love of god hire a female historian I'm begging

ICYMI - Ubisoft Forward AC Showcase Summary

The Assassin's Creed Showcase segment of Ubisoft Forward began about 50 minutes into the stream, was introduced by Yves Guillemot (Ubisoft co-founder and CEO), and was hosted by Danny Wallace (voice of Shaun Hastings) and Alice Terrett (Senior Community Developer).

TLDR: Mirage trailer and 2023 release date, more post-launch Valhalla content, three codenamed games (Red and Hexe via Project Infinity, Jade via mobile), and AC live-action show with Netflix is early in production. No mention of an AC1 remake.

Assassin's Creed Mirage

The official cinematic trailer was shown featuring Basim's early life as a thief, initiation and training as an Assassin Hidden One, and more. It looks absolutely gorgeous.

Interview with Sarah Beaulieu, Narrative Director:

The game will focus on stealth and a strong action-adventure narrative.

following Basim's life 20 years before Valhalla as a thief in Baghdad and his journey of becoming a master assassin.

We'll meet Basim's mentor Roshan, voiced by Shohreh Aghdashloo, and several historical characters.

Assassin's Creed is "doubling down" on a passion for history as a powerful and eye-opening source for entertainment. New games were announced:

Codename Jade

Open-world AC game for mobile announced with a trailer. The game will take place in China (215 BCE). Players can create their own character.

Original AC live-action series and mobile game from Netflix

No details or visuals shared, but more info will be released as they get closer. The series will be an "epic, genre-bending adaptation". No news about the formerly announced animated or anime projects.

Codename Red

This will be another flagship title and the future of open-world RPG games in the AC series. Developed by the same studio as Odyssey (Ubisoft Quebec) and set in Feudal Japan.

Codename Hexe

Another flagship title in production by Ubisoft Montreal. The short trailer is apparently "full of secrets".

Project Infinity

"Not a game", but Infinity will be a single entry point for players to enter the future of AC and a hub that "unites players and experiences". Ubisoft is "investigating" standalone multiplayer experiences via the Infinity hub.

What I'm Working On Next

After another week of thinking about what writing project I'd like to tackle next, I've finally got a plan.

Before "The Breaking" showed up to distract me, I was four chapters into an AC: Odyssey novel with Deimos!Kassandra as the POV character. Seems I've still got the itch for this story because I've been thinking about it a lot lately.

The concept for this story makes it far more likely to be a crowd pleaser. The plot is straightforward, the story doesn't take many risks, and it also fits into some popular tropes (found family and slow burn). Look at me, giving readers what they actually want.

I plan to cut my outline so this story will fit into 75,000 words. This won't be a situation where I'm writing my way into the unknown and watching my wordcount swell like a balloon as I go along—I know exactly where this story must go and 75k words ought to be plenty to get there.

The book is called "Irredeemable." I've talked about it before. And you'll see it when I'm finished with it, because I won't start posting it until it's complete.
