And the ficciest Taylor Swift song of all time is...
youtube
(Had to use the original version because the music video is just too good, sorry Taylor)
Song: You Belong With Me Album: Fearless Year: 2008/2021 Lyrics: https://genius.com/Taylor-swift-you-belong-with-me-taylors-version-lyrics Ficciness Rank: #1
This song is, in my objective opinion, perfect. It’s the gold standard of songs sung by women that are arguably even better if you imagine them sung by a gay guy. All the stuff about not performing femininity well enough–short skirts vs. t-shirts, high heels vs. sneakers–are just begging to be about a guy who thinks he’ll never get his best friend’s love because, well, he isn’t a girl.
And he should be with this guy! They get along so well together! Way better than the girls this guy is always dating–they never treat him like they even like him, and honestly, he doesn’t seem to like them all that much, either. Main character is the one who really knows him, who likes the same music as him and laughs at the same jokes. Main character is the one this guy turns to when he’s having a hard time, who hears about his dreams, who shares the important things in life with him. They’re so connected. It’s almost everything main character wants–just close enough to be absolutely torturous.
It’s the culmination of the themes we’ve been chasing through these top 25 songs: the unbearable closeness to someone who feels like they should be more than a friend; the longing, the adoration, the feeling that this person was made for you; the sense of inadequacy compared to the people that this person is and should be dating; the angst at the impossibility of them ever wanting you back. This song is friends to lovers in a nutshell.
Pairing I’d assign to this song: We’re returning to the hockey RPF champions: Jonny and Patrick. My first hockey RPF pairing, and still my favorite dynamic to write. And we’re gonna honor the music video and go with a high school AU here.
Jonny and Patrick have been friends since elementary school. It’s only in the past year or so that Patrick’s realized their friendship really isn’t enough for him. They have this whole bit where they write notes to each other and pass them in class, folded into fun shapes and sometimes tucked into pockets when the other person isn’t paying attention so they’ll find them later. Patrick can’t count the number of times he’s found a note from Jonny well after the school day ends and has sat there grinning helplessly at it, warmth blooming all through his chest. He finds himself doodling extra notes in the margins of his notebook paper, writing “I love you” in spots that he could tear out and fold up and tuck into Jonny’s pockets somewhere. But he never does.
Because Jonny’s dating someone. Jonny’s always dating someone. They’re both on the hockey team, and Jonny’s tall and good-looking and scrupulously polite to girls and it means there’s always someone going out with him. Some of the girls he dates are nice, and some even seem genuinely into him–but none of them really connect with him, not like Patrick does. Jonny doesn’t even seem like himself with them. He’s all stiff and formal and closed-off, and for some reason girls like that because they think it means he’s mysterious and deep, but it’s not who he really is. They never get to see the silly version of Jonny, or the one who gets stressed and anxious from the pressures of school, or the one who stays up late with Patrick whispering into the dark about their secret dreams of playing professional hockey someday.
I love you, Patrick writes on a little slip of paper, but he puts it in his own pocket instead.
Junior prom is coming up, and Jonny’s going with the girl he’s been dating lately. Patrick could definitely go alone or with friends. Hell, he could find a girl of his own to go with. But he doesn’t want to–it’s too painful to see Jonny with his current girlfriend. She doesn’t even treat him well, and anyway, Patrick wants to be the one pressed against Jonny on the dance floor and taking couple’s photos for their parents. He can’t get over this feeling of rightness deep in his chest at the idea of it, and it feels like he’s ripping something out of himself when he remembers that it will never happen.
So Patrick’s not going to the dance. Jonny’s really bummed about it–he even rents them both tuxes in an effort to get Patrick to change his mind, but Patrick doesn’t budge. He’s not going to torture himself like that.
But the night of prom, Patrick’s alone in his room, and he looks at the tux Jonny got for him and he thinks…why not? He’s bored and sad sitting here alone, and he doesn’t want his thing for Jonny to ruin everything for him. So he puts the tux on (it fits perfectly, Jonny knows his size by heart), and before he goes out the door he hesitates over the note on his desk, one of the “I love you” notes he never gave to Jonny. He grabs it and puts it in his pocket. He knows he’s not going to do anything with it, but a guy can dream, right?
He goes to the dance, and Jonny finds him right away, even in the crush of tipsy high school students. He looks so excited that Patrick made it, and his girlfriend isn’t anywhere in sight. “Where’s Julia?” Patrick shouts over the noise, and Jonny just says, “Look in your pocket!” “What?” Patrick says, panicked, and gropes for his right pocket, where he put the note. How does Jonny…did he find out, or…
“No, the other one,” Jonny says, and he’s kind of bouncing on his toes, his cheeks flushed. Patrick sticks his hand in his left pocket, and there’s a note there, too: a note in the flower fold that Jonny taught him years ago. He opens it and stares at it in confusion. “But–I didn’t write this,” he says.
“No, I wrote it,” Jonny says, this look of hope in his eyes, and all of a sudden Patrick feels like laughing. He digs into his other pocket. “This is the one I wrote,” he says, and hands Jonny his note. Jonny’s face lights up like the sun rising. For a moment they’re both standing there with their I love you notes, beaming at each other, and then–well, this is prom, isn’t it? What’s prom without a little making out on the dance floor?

The prompt is "Nutcracker"
I just realized yesterday that Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker ballet has its 130 anniversary on December 18, but oh well. Anyways, on December 14 was the 6th anniversary of Ballerina/Leap! so I couldn't resist to draw my favorite baby turtledoves together, and of course Victor is the Nutcracker here. 😉 That clumsy little inventor hides a charming yet awkward prince inside. 😊
Happy 6th anniversary to these awesome characters! 😃

“Of all the types of waiting, the waiting of pregnancy is like the waiting we do for God”-Wendy M. Wright, The Vigil: Keeping Watch in the Season of Christ’s Coming. Qtd. in Living the Christian Year by Bobby Gross, page 37 (Downers Grove: InterVarsity Press, 2009)
“All around us we observe a pregnant creation. The difficult times of pain throughout the world are simply birth pangs. But it’s not only around us. It’s within us. The Spirit of God is arousing us within. We’re also feeling the birth pangs. These sterile and barren bodies of ours are yearning for full deliverance. That is why waiting does not diminish us, any more than waiting diminishes a pregnant mother. We are enlarged in the waiting. We, of course, don’t see what is enlarging us. But the longer we wait, the larger we become, and the more joyful our expectancy.” Romans 8:22-25, paraphrased by Eugene Peterson, qtd. in Bobby Gross, Living the Christian Year (Downer’s Grove: InterVarsity Press, 2009)

Although I will be observing Advent--there's so much wonder in the waiting--I'm already listening to Christmas music. 2022 has, for so many reasons, been the hardest year of my life, the one that nearly broke me. More than ever, this year, I'm drawn to hope and to joy.
"A thrill of hope/the weary world rejoices"--yes. Yes, it does.

Calling all my Christians (especially Catholic) who celebrate Advent: how do I use the candles?
For advent I usually just read a scripture every day stating from Genesis and following the story of the scriptures to the birth of Jesus. But I really want to do the candles this year. What do the colours mean, and do I read specific scriptures when I light them? I heard rumours you don’t light any candles the first week? I know I light one more every week until Christmas but not much more beyond that.
Can anyone tell me what to do or point me to a comprehensive resource? Thanks!! 💕💕

Jam Post Dec 4th 2022
Apricots with bergamot/Abricots a la bergamote
Tasted fizzy at first which then mellowed out into syrupy apricot. I need a full size of this. Soft jelly texture, their stone fruit jams are the best 11/10

Taylor Swift Meets Hockey RPF: A 2022 Advent Calendar
Hello friends. I’m so excited to announce the advent calendar you never knew you wanted: the countdown of the 25 ficciest Taylor Swift songs, specifically as they apply to hockey RPF!
We’ve long been aware here in the fic community that Ms. Swift’s lyrics provide excellent titles. But just how ficcy are her songs, really? I’ve set out to answer that question via an extremely scientific* ranking project that combines three things I love dearly: hockey RPF, Taylor Swift songs, and making ranked lists of things.
*It was not even a little bit scientific
If you share any of these interests, you may be asking the following questions:
Q. I’m so excited! But what does this advent calendar actually consist of?
A. What a good question. Every day I’ll do a write-up of one of the songs, starting with the least ficcy of the 25 on 12/1 and getting ficcier each day up until Christmas, when the ficciness will reach its peak and we’ll explode with the joy of repressed men pining for each other.
Q. Are you actually going to write a story for each song?
A. Hahaha no. But I am going to pick a pairing that I think fits the song the best and say a little about how their story would go, and if I get intrigued enough by any of it I might write the story eventually.
Q. You’re going to let us know which song lyrics you’d use to title the story, though, right?
A. Of course.
Q. How can I keep track of these posts?
A. This post will act as a master post as soon as I’ve started the countdown.
Q. How about a playlist so we can listen along?
A. I got you right here! It’s empty now, and I’ll add songs as soon as they’re revealed.
Q. But wait! There’s so much variety in fanfiction, even just within hockey RPF. What does “ficciest” actually mean?
A. The ficciness of each song has been determined via the extremely objective method of me thinking about it really, really hard. I’m not aiming for all of fandom here; my frame of reference is men’s hockey RPF, specifically slash, specifically the kinds of stories I most enjoy reading/writing.
Q. Isn’t that kind of arbitrary?
A. Shhhhhh.
Q. Okay but that means pining is going to be front and center, right?
A. Absolutely it does.
Q.  So…you actually went through all of Taylor Swift’s discography for this?
A. Let’s just say my Spotify Wrapped is a little extreme this year.
Q. Aside from screwing your Spotify stats all to hell, did you come across any trends in the ficciness of her music that you’d like to share with us?
A. I’m so glad you asked! As part of determining the top 25, I rated every Taylor Swift song in her 10 studio albums (Taylor’s Version where available) on a scale of 0-10 for applicability to hockey RPF. Her albums ranked as follows:
Reputation (2017): 4.79 average ficciness rating
Lover (2019): 4.39
Taylor Swift (2006): 4
Speak Now (2010): 3.88
Red (2012): 3.55
Folklore (2020): 3.41
Fearless (2008): 3.4
Midnights (2022): 3.3
Evermore (2020): 3
1989 (2014): 2.77
Honestly I was pretty surprised by how this shook out. I expected ficciness to be at its peak in her first few albums, but nope. It was reasonably high at the start, and it did decline as she transitioned from country to pop with 1989, but then it shot up to new heights in Reputation and Lover. These are, not coincidentally, the two albums she wrote during and just after the start of her relationship with her current partner. This makes sense to me: the pining of the early albums is all well and good, but there are also a lot of songs about breakups, which did not do well in the ficciness ratings. After Lover, things went a little more as expected: the ficciness leveled off again, and her three most recent albums all ended up in the bottom half. Here's a fancy graph of the results:
Tumblr media
That said, averages don’t tell you everything. Her first album is less ficcy than Lover on average but does far better in the top 25. Folklore is above Fearless by average rating, but it only has one song in the top 25 versus Fearless’s four. In fact, there were three albums that had only one song make it in, and 1989, least ficcy of them all, managed to squeak in twice. So “average ficciness” and “number of extremely ficcy songs” turned out to be very different stats.
Q. That's fun. Do you have any more charts?
A. I sure do! Here's one I made of how many songs came in at each rating from 1-10:
Tumblr media
Basically, there were a lot of songs that weren't ficcy even a little bit, declining in number towards the mediocrely ficcy at 5. Then the count started going up again with songs that had enough ficcy content to be considered but maybe didn't quite hit the nail on the head. There were only a few songs that were real bullseyes.
When it came to narrowing things down, everything 7 and above got further consideration. About half the 7s made it, and almost all the 8s (there were a few I left out for various reasons). All the 9s and 10s got in.
Q. You’ve infected my brain with this, and now I’m curious how you’d rate this one song of hers I’m thinking about.
A. Shoot me an ask! If it isn’t in the top 25 I’ll answer with the ficciness rating I gave it and why.
Q. Thank you, this was exactly the extremely niche advent calendar I was hoping for this year.
A. Universal appeal, that’s my goal!
Day One: Speak Now Day Two: Blank Space Day Three: Sparks Fly Day Four: Girl at Home Day Five: Come Back...Be Here Day Six: 22 Day Seven: Breathe Day Eight: Willow Day Nine: Cruel Summer Day Ten: Long Live Day Eleven: I Know Places Day Twelve: I Think He Knows Day Thirteen: Snow On The Beach Day Fourteen: Peace Day Fifteen: Call It What You Want Day Sixteen: Fearless Day Seventeen: Untouchable Day Eighteen: I'm Only Me When I'm With You Day Nineteen: Invisible Day Twenty: Gorgeous Day Twenty-One: Dress Day Twenty-Two: Treacherous Day Twenty-Three: Teardrops On My Guitar Day Twenty-Four: I'd Lie Day Twenty-Five: You Belong With Me

Advent Novena To Prepare For Christmas
The Church’s liturgy begins today to make a shift: the first part of Advent is far more eschatological, focusing on Jesus’ Second Coming and our need, here and now, to prepare for it. In the last nine days of Advent, the focus moves to the historical events that led to Jesus’ First Coming in Bethlehem over two millennia ago. So, even if you’ve been negligent in gearing up spiritually for…
