Pikmin Fandom Monthly: February 2023

Welcome to the first edition of Pikmin Fandom Monthly! This is just a little monthly series I'd like to do where on the first day of each month, I share neat fan projects from the pikmin fandom made in the previous month! For this I will be focusing on creative projects (so no analysis or theories, at least for now). For this first edition, all entries will be ones that I have found and enjoyed but in the future I hope to have some that were recommended to me as well! (Most of these entries are from Tumblr as a result, oops.) No images or snippets will be posted to these: all entries will be links to where the artists have posted the original work!

Please feel free to leave suggestions in the comments about how to handle this series in the future and of what March 2023 works should be included in the next edition! Any creative pikmin fan work is welcome, so long as it was made during this March.

This will also be cross-posted to Pikmin Park!

With all that out of the way, here are our categories!

Multi-Page Fan Comics and Visual Ask Blogs

We only have one of these for this month, that being Pikmin x Weirdcore - a visual ask blog over on Tumblr! It's fairly surreal, but it's been a lot of fun thus far! Olimar, Louie, and the Koppaites have all crashed on PNF-404 (again) and have been separated (again). This time, however, it seems a beast that is other-worldly even to PNF-404 is after them now. Quick warning, the artist has stated that there will be violence, glitchy imagery, and body horror in this one!

Fan Art and One Page Comics

Aka the largest collection I've gathered this month!

Firstly is Professor Pikton by Buttery Cuties! A purple pikmin dressed up like Professor Layton to celebrate the upcoming games in both franchises, how cute!

Corromon drew this Olimin, which simply looks great! Poor Olimar certainly needs a hug, though.

Higgy also drew Olimar - two Olimars, in fact! The sketchy style and expressions are very pleasing to look at, and I adore his little boots.

Next up, Alph (rightfully) worries over Louie's eating habits in this short comic by Cirtus. The style closely resembles how the characters look in-game, which is a very nice cherry on top of how sweet and charming this two-panel comic is.

SparrowOvO drew this amazing art of a baby snagret sitting with a very spooked ice pikmin. I don't even know where to start with this one - the colors, lighting, texturing, and expressions are all just so good. This may easily be my favorite out of this month's fan art!

Zombunny drew three of our four new leaders with Oatchi! They're all so adorable, and this looks great (as for where our unnamed bald friend is, he is reportedly in jail for tax evasion, among other crimes. (For legal reasons, this is a joke.))

This next entry is apparently older art, but it wasn't posted until this February, so here's this really cool idea for a phosbat variant: the Beguiling Phosbat by vehemoth-phosbitch! This beautiful little beast can withstand sunlight and is based more so on the luna moth (and maybe the flying fox as well, but I may be wrong).

Louivi drew this gorgeous piece simply captioned as Smokey Progg. The colors, the textures, it's all so good an so very haunting. Perfect for the little horror that is the smokey progg in game!

And last but certainly not least is the only piece of fan art that didn't come from Tumblr: this beautiful art of all four of our new leaders hanging out, made by Porinu! They all look adorable, each with their own pose! I particularly like how our unnamed pink friend looks - she seems so curious and even innocent to a degree.

Fanfiction and Written Ask Blogs

Once again, I only have one piece for a category. This time, it is Safe in A Father's Embrace written by PiperRose90. This story may be very short, but it is also very sweet! Olimar must make sure that Louie and Alph will be okay for the night - they are practically his sons now, after all!

Other Works

Firstly is this amazing little sculpture of a pyroclasmic slooch by Tete's DIY! This video shows their process for making the little sculpture from start to finish - including how they made the "fire" really glow!

Creative Sushi did this wonderful little cosplay of the Hocotate Freight Ship! It looks fantastic, and all of the little details really show how much love and effort went into the creation of this cosplay.

Kevin Fagaragan animated this adorable concept for a pikmin 4 ending - don't worry, there's no spoilers! Just overwhelming cuteness as the pikmin hang out and dance with Oatchi.

And to wrap all of this up is yet another animation! In Wooden Turtle's Do Not Pet the Baby Snagrets, not even Olimar can resist how adorable these new additions to the pikmin planet are! But, ah, it seems that leads him into a bit of trouble...

Pikmin 4 has sent me wondering about New World of Steam

TL;DR: I'm speculating about the potential of a free roam environment in the new Layton game

...This is like, the fifth time I've had to type all this out because of dumb technical issues and human error (Emphasis on human. And on error.), so I would greatly appreciate it if you'd keep reading!

I thought of this stuff like, a week ago, but I was too lazy to type it all out, but I'm finally making myself do this.

Okay, so I've been playing Pikmin 4 for a while now. Great game. Excellent game. I love all the different changes we've seen in it compared to Pikmin games prior, but there's something in particular that's stood out to me. Namely, the base of operations where you spend time between missions.

As you save more and more castaways, the base expands as the group works together to create more space for these rescued folks so everyone can live there comfortably. Makes sense, and I think it's a neat mechanic. But it also reminded me of what we were told during the New World of Steam trailer; that the city would develop further based on the puzzles the player solves.

This got me thinking - what if these developments are something we experience firsthand? Maybe we play as Professor Layton, with Luke taking on the role of a guide in a more literal sense than his being the detective this time and the professor taking on the apprentice-like role. Maybe we play as a character we get to create and customize (I'm not terribly convinced of the latter, truthfully, but I also believe anything is possible).

Regardless, I believe it's possible that whoever we play as will be roaming around a 3D environment that develops as we solve more puzzles. Certain vehicles become available to us, which we'll use to get around different areas. Maybe that also means vehicles that are blocking places will move out of our way so we can enter new locations, such as roads that were blocked leading to other parts of town, or shops in the area that were previously obstructed. Maybe through solving puzzles, we'll inspire people to open shops, or we'll assist them in building said shop itself.

If we do get to create our own character (however unlikely), maybe one of these shops will let us buy clothes for them! Or maybe Professor Layton could purchase new outfits for himself (also very doubtful). Maybe we'll see Luke shake up his own wardrobe as well (Even more than he already has? Have you gone mad???). I'm guessing there could be a clothing store of some sort because Katrielle had a lot of different outfits in her game, so maybe we could see a similar mechanic here too? (With maybe hint coins or picarats as a currency?)

Maybe we'll see some sort of mechanic place open up where we can customize our vehicles, possibly through solving puzzles or something. Perhaps we'll see a DIY function at this location, similar to that of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Obviously, this is all speculation and the ramblings of a mind starved of Layton content for too long, but who can really say what Level-5 has in store for us this time?

...All that said, I do hope they don't stray too far from the old formula. I imagine it will most likely still be a visual novel type game, and I really do hope that the cutscenes will still be the 2D animations we know and love. But who knows? Only time will tell.

Rapid fire thoughts after the Nintendo Direct

Overall, I thought the Direct was pretty OK, but there were a handful of announcements that really stood out to me.

-Professor Layton finally making a comeback is wonderful news. I only played the first 3 DS titles but I’m stlll very fond of them, and it’s splendid to see the series return after so long.

-Tears of the Kingdom continues to look fantastic the more we see of it. Part of me wishes the game gets a proper showcase, but I’m also glad they’re keeping spoilers to a minimum. Also is my man Ganondorf finally getting a voice!?

-The Metroid Prime remaster, holy hell! I got into Metroid properly in 2021 as Dread led me to binge the rest of the series. Prime is a wonderful game and this remster looks clean as hell. I’m very tempted to get that digital download tonight as long as it’s not too expensive.

-GBA games on Switch being Expansion Pass exclusive is infuriating but expected. More incentive to buy what I need off the Wii U eShop before it closes I guess.

-While I only ever played the first, Pikmin 4 looks lovely. Very tempted to look into the series further.

-Similar with Kirby. The only game I ever played was Kirby Super Star, but with all the praise I’ve heard for Forgotten Land and now seeing Return to Dreamland getting a Bowser’s Fury style bonus campaign for Magalor, it seems like there’s no better time to give the series a proper shot.

-Not the biggest Splatoon fan but the DLC looks really cool.

-Delighted to see Advance Wars make it out of hiatus jail at last. I’m very tempted to finally try this series out too.

And last, the thing you know I’m gonna lose my mind over: the Xenoblade DLC. The new hero has a cool new design, I promise I won’t make a Steven Universe joke. The idea that she’ll help you make OP accessories is cool, but I wonder what her battle capabilities will be. I’m guessing Support? The Archsage Gauntlet sounds like a really neat spin on the battle system. Making solo builds will require a whole different strategy to the game’s team building techniques. And the legacy costumes look really cool, I especially like Taion in Jin’s outfit.

And of course: HOLY HELL. My boys. 

They look so good! Rex especially got the glowup of the goddamn century.

Alvis is BACK? But he’s using Fog KIng powers? And Bionis Leg? Also, Noah ancestor, so this is definitely a Founders prequel. I have SO many questions and I can’t WAIT to learn more.

Overall, not an insane direct but enough announcements that made me personally happy that I can’t complain. Now if you’ll excuse me I’m gonna go download that Octopath 2 demo.

Pikmin 4 recieved a new feature trailer, with a release date of 7/21/2023!

Splatoon 3 Expansion Pass was announced, Wave 1 launching this Spring!

Fire Emblem Engage DLC will launch today on the eShop!

Octopath Traveller II will have a demo available on the eShop today, with the full game releasing February 24th!

A remaster of We❤ Katamari will be coming to Switch!

Advance Wars 1+2: Re-boot Camp will finally be releasing on April 21st, with preorders opening today!

Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe will launch February 24th, but preorders are open now, and a demo will be on the eShop!

This is a big one... GAMEBOY WILL BE COMING TO NINTENDO SWITCH ONLINE!! Launch titles include Tetris, Super Mario Land 2, Link's Awakening, Game & Watch Gallery 3, Metroid II, Wario Land 3, and Kirby's Dream Land.

A new Professor Layton game will be coming to Switch! All we have is a title announcement: Professor Layton and the New World of Steam

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Wave 4 launches this spring!

There was a new feature trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom! A new Amiibo of Link was also announced to be released on the same day as the game!

February 2023 Nintendo Direct Bullet Thoughts

Pikmin 4 being a rescue mission feels like a natural progression, same with the assumed night-time exploration. Probably going to add some good tension, though not as much as the unsettling dog friend.

Someday I'll play Xenoblade Chronicles 3... when I have time hahaaaaaaaaa.

Samba De Amigo is the strangest comeback, but I'll take it?

I haven't wanted to be an Influencer™ even virtually and I'm not going to start now.

Is it just me or is the new Tron game kinda pulling from the Necrobarista school of mostly static narrative panels in 3D spaces w/ really precise and gorgeous cinematography?

Bayonetta: Origins has a gorgeous storybook aesthetic, but also feels real strange? Not even sure what pricks my mind on this, but it's probably going to be fine.

If Splat33n crosses over with Nier, I will laugh hard enough to blow up the sun.

So strange to see an "X of Illusion" game from Disney in the year of our gods 2023, but the animation is satisfyingly good, so I can't really complain.

Harmony, is yet another game with gorgeous animation, but also might have an interesting enough story to keep me hooked.

Stars, I'm never going to play a JRPG again with my schedule, huh?

Been waiting for Sabotage's next game after The Messenger to come out, and MAN IT'S LOOKING GOOD.

Seeing Etrian Odyssey get an easy mode for it's older games is FUNNY, but I'm surprised they don't seem to have remastered / remixed the soundtracks.

Advance Wars finally exists, for real this time.

I've always wanted to play as Magolor, and now my wishes have been fulfilled. Now we can finally learn how he came to become a Theme Park Manager.

GBA / GB games are nice, and the local / online multiplayer is nice. Cool. Cool cool.

Metroid Prime Remastered feels like they're building up hype to try and get a reveal of Metroid Prime 4 later down the line. Still, looks gorgeous.

Banger soundtrack tbh for the rapid-fire blitz of games. Highlights for me were Blanc, Battle Network Collection, and Have a Nice Death

6th time seeing Breath of the Wild 2 as the stinger really kinda dampens the effect. But hey, we have slightly better voice acting and a tentative release date!

Ok, time for some thoughts regarding yesterday's Nintendo Direct!

Pikmin 4: Nothing too revolutionary, just taking the Pikmin formula and refining/expanding it, like Pikmin 2 and 3 did before it. And honestly, that's not a bad thing! I love the Pikmin games, they're really fun and charming and this one seems to continue that trend. It seems we're getting all the existing Pikmin types in addition to the new Ice Pikmin so that'll be cool. And the new doggo is adorable! I'm really looking forward to this one.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective: This is a game that I always wanted to play and never got to do it, so I'm glad to see it ported to the Switch! Maybe this will be the time I actually play it.

Sea of Stars: Absolutely gorgeous and looks really fun as well, taking inspiration from one of my favorite games ever. Apparently it got a demo so I'll probably give that a try. I still need to play The Messenger though...

Game Boy and Game Boy Advance added to Nintendo Switch Online: Finally! And now I actually have the Expansion Pack thanks to a friend so I can get hyped about GBA too. The libraries are a bit limited for the time being but that's to be expected. Looking forward to replaying some of my favorites from that era and also try a few classics for the first time. Although the games I'm most hyped about are the ones that were confirmed to come in the future, like Oracle of Seasons/Ages, Pokémon TCG, Metroid Fusion and of course freaking GOLDEN SUN (yes, I'm ready to replay it for the millionth time).

Metroid Prime Remastered: Okay, I wasn't expecting this one, even though it had been rumored for a while. While I would've liked to see the entire trilogy in one package, the first Prime is arguably the best one and also one of the best games ever made. The remake looks amazing and much more polished than just a simple HD port. Seriously, if you haven't played this game before, give it a try, it's a masterpiece, and this is coming from someone who hates shooters (Metroid Prime isn't really a shooter).

Baten Kaitos I & II Remaster: HOLY SHIT. Another one (two?) that I always wanted to play but didn't get when it first came out before it became impossible to find, and never bothered with trying to emulate. I'd love to give the series a chance on modern hardware.

Professor Layton And The New World of Steam: HOOOOOO BOY!!! This might seriously be my favorite announcement of the Direct, even though they didn't really show us anything! I was a HUGE Layton fan during the DS era and I was so sad that the series kinda just died all of a sudden. I'm honestly so fucking hyped for this! Please be good, please be good, please be good!

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC Wave 4: The new track looks amazing! Yoshi's Island was one of the defining games from my childhood so this gets me extremely nostalgic. Also Birdo was a nice surprise! I wasn't expecting characters in the pass! While I don't really care about Birdo in particular, this opens the door for more characters so maybe this means I can finally have my boy Diddy Kong again. Please. It's been so long.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: Honestly I don't have a lot to say about this one. Am I hyped? Absolutely. But we still know so little about this game! What's the story about? How does it differ from BotW? Although, part of me kinda wishes it stays this way. Trailers tend to spoil too much stuff these days, so I'm fine with keeping the surprises for when I actually play the game. Oh, and it's a minor thing, but I hope they bring back Wolf Link and/or a similar mechanic (and not locked to amiibo this time). I just loved exploring Hyrule with a doggo.

Overall a really exciting Direct, and there were also a bunch of other cool announcements that I didn't touch here. Now to work on my backlog so I can play shiny new games without feeling guilty, lol.

A NEW PROFESSOR LAYTON GAME ??? like. all they did was j show it exists basically like they showed proffesor layton then a title then j moved on but like !!! omggg !!! ik i siad i was gonna paly all the proffesor layton games and tbh i kinda gave up on that bc one of the puzzles was too hard FDHDFGHDF but i might un give up now idk !!! also the secodn rly hype thing was !!!! the trailer for the new zelda which looks AMAZING like !! on thing that really stood out to me was that like ???? theres cars ??? or like vechiles cars flying machines etc it seems rly cool and also THEE MOST HYPE THING TO MEE THE PIKMIN 4 TRAILER ill actually link that for you so u can watch it too (even tho the amnt u care is. limited GHDHDFHD in the sense that u only care abt it bc u care abt me but u care abt me a lot so congrats u now care abt pikmin a lot DFGDFHDF) but HOLY SHIT THE GAME IS SO BEAUTIFUL !!!!! like esp compared to pikmin 3 i j think like the lighting and stuff is so lovley also OMG watching it again as i type this but theres like. soo much stuff i cld talk abt but i wont en bc its getting late but ice pikmin look so so cutee those r new and im so exicted for them also THE DOG THE OUPPY !?!?!!? Tears of the Kingdom looks spectacular of course but i wonder if it will still have the same level of detail as the first one (god i hope so!) ALSO OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE IN MAY HELL YEAH!!

Im not impressed by the severely limited GB assortment since they absolutely refuse to port any old pokemon games but im glad others are going to get their faves back

I never was into the Pikmin games but i think ill give Pikmin 4 a try, the little dog thing really stole my heart the second it appeared on screen lol

That Nintendo direct has had me reeling since it aired. Like I’m so giddy, usually I would go on a reblog spree here or on my sideblog, but I’m paralysed. Afjsgksgkdkgd Tears of the Kingdom has got me so hard that idk how to process things that would also be of interest to me like: octopath demo, Pikmin 4, FE dlc, Xenoblade dlc, and Professor Layton!!
