ok ok but actually i want to know ur thoughts on the en titles like even with my limited understanding of japanese im????? on half these titles and worse i gotta memorize them bc youtube forces u to read them that way. nooo its not testament its kyuuyaku hankagai nooo its not blade its shuuen touhikou....
okay i actually have my yt set to jpn so all i see of the eng titles is actually second hand but from what i know
last i checked aru sekai shoushitsu was left untranslated. i dont know how i feel about that.
problem for me starts with kyuuyaku hankagai. kyuuyaku IS old testament yes thats where the eng testament comes from. hankagai is actually a bit of word play on magus part bc there IS a word hankagai meaning like a business district or busy downtown area but the hanka magu uses in the title is actually for scientific generalizations with the suffix of town at the end. so u end up with something like town of the old testament's generalizations which. right away u can see how much extra context ur getting from that alone. reducing it to JUST testament leaves out a lot of detail & makes it more open to interpretation. if i didnt know the og title id see testament & go "oh its called testament bc its a testament of her will to work so hard and go thru all this horror time after time after time" but thats not it. look im not a religious person at all but it goes beyond word choice here the opening text is reminiscent (at the very least) of dante's inferno, 2 songs later we get more church imagery & a whole angel, this isnt a one time thing its also a part of the story & to leave it as just testament makes it so easy to ignore or overlook that part. and then there's the fact its one of the songs tied directly to a certain world's disappearance. disappearance has its main lines distributed under specific headers of sorts, each being a single 2 syllable kanji. the first of which is kyuu which is literally "past". translating both to reflect this in eng is. difficult esp when it gets to other songs but even if u leave it as old testament the "old" is Still There & its a lot more possible to catch onto the connection (hard maybe but not impossible)
shuuen touhikou makes me need to talk a walk and im not joking. fucking "blade" sounds like ur trying to appeal to edgy middle schoolers. aside from that when i hear blade im thinking its going to be a fighting song - maybe not a physical fight, but theres going to be conflict- and yes! there IS conflict in this song! its not what i would expect from seeing blade tho! she is fighting & yes the lyrics are like. using her sword to try and forge her own path out when the others let her down, but blade makes it seem like idk some noble fight or something. but u read demise escape & u KNOW shit's serious. it IS a fight but its that kind of "god i dont want to die like this" type of primal fight and not some cool miku swordfighting action. this girl's been told to sit tight and it will work out & she knows thats wrong & the only thing left is for her try whatever she can so that maybe MAYBE she can make it out alive. demise escape as a title hits the type of fear & heaviness thats in the series and gets across and entirely different picture than what blade could ever do. and. again. as one of the main songs blade completely lacks anyway to tie back to the og song. the lines in shoushitsu are shuu which becomes the shuu in shuuen. end & demise are harder to accurately translate in both songs so even with the more accurate eng title its not that easy to tie back into shoushitsu but like. at the very least u can add it as a fun fact or something somewhere.
oumen mokushiroku i just have to sit here & accept that it actually works much to my own dissatisfaction. the direct translation is concave revelation BUT mokushiroku is part of the lyrics in shoushitsu & it has an alternate reading of being pronounced "apocalypse" so a series accurate title here is concave apocalypse & concave is for the most part just tying back to the ou/concave lines in shoushitsu. for as much as i think about this song i actually dont have anything deep to say about the concave part of the title beyond that so like. fine. reduce it to just apocalypse fine whatever i hate it but [throws my hands up] u win this time magu
unplanned apoptosis is accurate the only problem is in jpn u can catch the a-a alliteration in the title but thats not a problem with the translation thats a problem with the english language itself. the alliteration thing is in fact series context btw it keeps in with that repeating fractal theme they emphasized in shoushitsu and kyuuyaku. same with marshall maximizer but there u can actually see it. kanons fine.
kugutsu ashura is. hm. im nitpicking here. literally its puppet ashura. this isnt connected to a shoushitsu heading so ur not losing anything in that regard. however. from what ive been told about ashura (thank u my friend emimin) they arent very.... in control of things. per se. so when u compound that with puppet in the title it just really drives home what she's doing is not her own will. she cannot affect anything beyond how shes supposed to (i guess thats an okay way of putting it) which saying this is also why the motif isnt in this song either but thats off topic. ashura by itself doesnt bother me as much as the others but theres just that little extra context u get from knowing the first part is puppet that adds to it from a series standpoint.
laboratory is fine the only thing is in jpn it has the separation (labo-ratory) so its obvious its on of the songs with the alliteration theme going on. more of a fun fact than actually being wrong. its fine.
as far as i know yamete kudasai and kannagi dont have the official eng titles?? even if they did idk what to say about them bc these titles are already weird from a series standpoint anyway. they dont fit into the 5 kanji title songs category they dont fit into the alliteration category theyre just kind of here. if there IS thematic importance to them we're only going to know when more songs get posted. they dont have any keywords or kanji that tie into any other specific song either. theyre just here.

The music video for There There by Radiohead is a masterpiece and here is why
Tumblr media
So, as many of you might know already, There There and Nude are my two favourite songs by my favourite band, Radiohead. They are two very unique songs that move me in different but equally intense ways. But what makes There There extra special to me is the video, which managed to combine basically all the things that I love: spooky forests, little animals in clothes, hollow trees with winding roots, references to fairy tales and literature and a dream-like, voyeuristic atmosphere. I am first going to analyse the song itself, then how combined with the video, it is one of my favourite pieces of media I have ever seen.
Lyrics here. As the song starts off, it already feels like the listener is dropped inside a weird, intense primal world. I love percussion-heavy music and when I first heard it, the use of tom-toms and alienating, hardly recognisable sounds already reminded me of one of my other favourite artist’s best-know song: Björk’s Human Behaviour. I can’t really explain it if you don’t hear it, but both have this hypnotic, primal quality that beckons you in right off the bat. Then Thom’s mournful voice sings: “In pitch dark/ I go walking in your landscape/ Broken branches/ Trip me as I speak”. Not to go all A-Level English on his ass because let’s be honest, Thom’s lyrics are often nonsensical and vague, but I love this verse so much. It goes perfectly with the instrumental, starting off in a way that is like the start of a story; the words painting you a picture that is both dreamlike and frightening. To me, it describes falling in love in a way: “I am walking in your world, and I don’t know the way, and it’s all new and confusing and dark and sometimes I say the wrong things but I am still exploring, and it’s beautiful”
After this start that frankly hits you in the chest like a basketball in year 9 PE, we are treated to a combo attack with the lines “Just 'cause you feel it/ Doesn't mean it's there”. In classic Radiohead fashion, all the perceived optimism from the first verse is denied from us, basically saying “just because you feel a connection, it doesn’t mean it’s real”. Trust issues central. But it can also be interpreted to mean emotions in general, which is usually how I (a very emotional person) interpret it: feelings technically aren’t real. And the way you perceive the world while you are Going Through It™ is not always correct. No, everyone doesn’t hate you because their world isn’t centred around you: stop obsessing. It’s okay. There, there. (This is also reinforced later on with “someone on your shoulder”, basically saying it’s just your brain playing tricks.) Additionally, some think it’s referring to a dream, which would fit thematically with the music video.
The next verse to me is about the temptation of a bad decision while Going Through It™. Yes, it would be very easy to do the wrong thing, to go off this path that is making it really hard to get up in the morning: but it would also ruin you. I also interpret “don’t reach out” as coming from the siren (i.e. surprise, surprise: depression) – it wants you to self-destruct, to be a “walking disaster” but that, however tempting, is the wrong thing to do. The use of “we” also works with the “someone on your shoulder” line, and to me (however cringy that sounds) it means that music will always be there for me and help me work things out. It can also be applied to the relationship angle: the couple are in the same boat (/ship), and if one of them does something self-destructive, it will affect both. Both of these options work with the “Why so green and lonely? (…) Heaven sent you to me” lines. It’s interesting because the religious interpretation on Genius always annoyed me – Radiohead are the least religious band ever! This is the only religious reference I can think of from the top of my head, minus “angel” in Creep – but because it’s so rare, maybe it has a reason to be here? Maybe it IS about God after all, but I don’t really think so. Also, to me the imagery of “green and lonely” and the nautical “siren” and “shipwreck” have a much bigger weight visually than “heaven”, so they negate the religiousness in my eyes. I think it’s about two broken people finding each other, but also finding it hard to figure out how to fit together. They’re thinking that it might be a lost cause and destruction is right around the corner, but the best they can do (is good enough) is try and be there for each other while they head towards their ultimate end. Very comforting in a twisted way, which is Radiohead’s specialty.
So, let’s talk about the VIDEO!!! I’m writing this after an HQ version was FINALLY released on their website, so I’m going to use screenshots of that because oh my god, it’s beautiful.
Tumblr media
We start off with the “pitch-dark landscape”, more-or-less just as I imagined it while listening to the song. Although it is kind of drab and boring at the start, this only emphasises the magical quality of what it becomes later, as our protagonist Thom (I’m going to call him by name but I’m obviously referring to the character, not the real person) heads deeper and deeper inside. Oh, how I love forests in the dark. Nothing else has the same perfect ambiance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thom is walking in a way that matches the rhythm and the dreamlike atmosphere of the song, i.e. somewhere between an alien who just learned the way the Earthlings walk and the exaggerated, slightly sped-up movements of a silent movie star. We already know he has an affinity towards both bowler hats (Lotus Flower video) and pantomime-like acting (ANIMA) so this is truly on brand. He then sees dark clouds pass at a breakneck pace (again, the dreaminess of it all... chef’s kiss), then confused and lost, heads back into the forest which this time looks a lot less boring and “real” then at the start. The dark clouds can be interpreted as a warning of things to come (“stay out, not safe”), which he ignores or just a sign that something is off and we’re not in Kansas anymore.
Tumblr media
So as he turns back, we’re treated to my first Favourite Moment: Thom finding the beckoning yellow light and deciding to follow it. The way he is acting suggests both curiosity and sneakiness, like he suspects the thing emitting the light is much better than his original destination (if he had a destination at all).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love the way the light is illuminating his eyes here, it again reminds me very much of old movies (and Morticia Addams in the 90s movies, but probably because the filmmakers also took inspiration from the same well)
Tumblr media
Oh my god, just look at this shot. Beautiful. Lothlórien who?? I only know magical glowy Radiohead forest. Because yes, we’ve obviously crossed the path between realms the minute Thom decided to pursue the yellow light (which can also be connected to the “siren singing you to shipwreck” in the lyrics). This is now the land of magic and fairy tales, and strange things are afoot.
Tumblr media
Again, I gotta stop analysing for a moment and just note that the amount of serotonin this gives me would fuel 10 people for a year. For anyone who doesn’t know me well enough, animals in little clothes living in little well-arranged dwellings inside a tree are in the top 5 things that make me happy, and combined with Thom Yorke Radiohead peeking in the window like an innocuous tourist… and the warm light illuminating the miniatures… perfection. Okay, moving on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thom is exploring this strange world of anthropomorphic animals like an awkward giant, without seemingly anyone noticing him. This adds to the alienation seeping from the music: this is a weird and wonderful place but you don’t belong here (sorry for the Creep reference, swear it was not intentional). He first saw a pair of squirrels, chilling in their house; then a big banquet; then a cat wedding (power of 3, the fairy-tale number). If we are going with the dream metaphor here, these might be alluding to things happening in real life, especially the wedding as he actively walks away from it, but this is just a speculation. Mostly it just shows that these animals are living in a happy little community and we love that for them! But it also make me feel like this is a coping mechanism for our protagonist here. Apparently Thom (the real one) got the idea for this video from a children’s TV show called Bagpuss: I had a look and it’s the tear-jerkingly comforting and nostalgic stop-motion series that everyone needs one of in their lives (I have several, both English and Hungarian). The subtitle “The Boney King of Nowhere” refers to a song in episode 2 about a king who wasn’t comfortable on his throne: according to this link, this resonated with Thom, who found himself on a pedestal he never wanted. (It’s kind of funny that a little kid’s song about a king’s bony ass has such a sick name though). He also wanted the original creator of the show (Oliver Postgate) to animate the video but he declined. Anyway, the "fifties East European genre animation, overlaboured and naïve” aesthetic, to me, symbolises comfort and warmth that our protagonist doesn’t feel at home in.
Tumblr media
So off he goes, into the dark heart of the forest. Also, important to note the patch of fog that keeps showing him the way: is this the siren’s song physically manifested, pulling him away from the warmth of community? (”don’t reach out, don’t reach out”)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He then climbs up and sees a golden coat on a tree inside some kind of ancient ruin. This to me immediately brought to mind the Golden Fleece from Ancient Greek myth, which was the fleece of a magical ram that hung on an oak tree. It signified kingship, linking back to the subtitle. Thom sneaks to the tree, looks up at the ravens (7 of them: another fairy-tale number) and when he sees they are sleeping, tries on the coat. I found it interesting how at this point the coat looks quite ordinary, drab and brown – possibly a metaphor for a decision that you know is bad but you do it anyway; and by the time you realise it actually didn’t feel as good as you thought, it is too late - he listened to temptation (the sirens). He even takes the boots from inside the tree, which reminded me of SO many of the folktales that I grew up on: it’s not enough that the bad sibling did this one bad thing, they even did ANOTHER bad thing, which cements the listener in believing them to be irredeemable and worthy of the awful fate the tale has in store for them. The ravens (birds of death and in this case agents of justice) wake up – Thom has a little “oh shit” close-up and then start running for his life in his new attire.
Addition: another theory I found interesting among the comments is that this place is Limbo -  “
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The gothic look of the ravens chasing Thom with the rising full moon is such a huge contrast to the warm, comforting glow of the stop-motion animal town, but it makes sense with the crescendo of the music and it’s dark and menacing cacophony: “we are accidents waiting to happen”. This was Thom’s mistake: and now there is no turning back. (Quick note: his running here reminds me once again of the Human Behaviour video – I am working on another similar essay that concentrates on how Radiohead and Björk are mirrors of each other so look out for that).
Tumblr media
He thinks he is saved for a moment by the magical seven-league boots (another folktale reference) but it is only a false hope. He gets his punishment and turns into a tree by what we can assume to be a painful and terrifying process (I love his facial expression so much). The ravens arrive and we realise that this is most likely how the previous tree met his or her fate. The cycle continues. He is now the Boney King of Nowhere.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of my favourite mental images is people taken over by nature: not in a decomposing way but more like a Hanahaki disease way. Thom turning into a tree reminded me of a couple of things: one, my other favourite piece of entertainment Over the Garden Wall, which is very similar in tone to this video (if I ever meet Thom, I genuinely only want to ask him if he’s ever seen it and if yes what his thoughts are on it). SPOILERS for OTGW: the Beast turns lost children into trees and uses oil from the trees to keep his lantern alive, which is basically his life source – in this case the tree-person seems to be the living beating heart of the forest. The way the tree-curse is transmitted also reminded me of how the lantern was (nearly) passed down to Wirt. Basically, it is an inheritable burden. Two, and this isn’t my interpretation but I thought I’d mention it: Daphne & Apollo, wherein Daphne hides from Apollo’s sexual advances by turning into a tree. This doesn’t really fit the tone of the scene in my opinion, because Thom’s transformation is an involuntary punishment; but it kind of connects to the other reference to Greek myth, Odysseus and the sirens (both chasing after women, or the impossible dream). Three: Dante’s Inferno, in which the second ring of the seventh circle is the Wood of Suicides where “the souls of the people who attempted or committed suicide are transformed into gnarled, thorny trees and then fed upon by Harpies, hideous clawed birds with the faces of women; the trees are only permitted to speak when broken and bleeding”. Whomp whomp, it was a suicide metaphor :/ And it wasn’t a dream, it was Limbo - a thematic preoccupation of the band, so not impossible.
A comment I found relating to this: “After death you have to cross over. He got distracted by the nice and shiny shoes and jacket (don't reach out), hence the siren that leads you to shipwreck (Odysseus). When you want to enter the spiritual realm you have to be able to leave the material world behind or you shall not pass. He was distracted, got caught and changed into a worldly tree (he was still to attached to the material realm). The so-called reality we live now is the dream. (Just 'cause you feel it doesn't mean it's there). He remembered that he died and came back to this illusion. We are stuck in a lift....” I really like this interpretation of Thom’s downfall being too attached to materialism/ fame & fortune. I wonder what he meant by “came back to this illusion”? Also, who are the animals in this scenario: aspects of Thom’s life or other people, stuck in Limbo/ every-day oblivion?
This wouldn’t be the first or last time Radiohead explores the concept of death, so I don’t think it’s far-fetched. And it fits with the lyrics too, as I’ve discussed briefly above: this is what happens when you listen to the siren (the fog, the light) and stray away from the cute animal town, Thomas! I’m joking because it is kind of a bummer to end it on this, but I just love how dense and layered this video is. Most of their videos are top-notch but this one just hits a really sweet spot for me, so yeah! 2500 words! I’m glad you came along, pardner! Goodbye till next time!

COMIC TEA PARTY START!
Good day everyone~! This week’s Comic Tea Party is now officially beginning~! Today we are discussing Pathways: Chronicles of Tuvana by Elaine Tipping~! (http://pathways.smackjeeves.com/) For those new or in need of a reminder, discussions about the comic are freeform, so please feel free to bring up whatever you wish. However, every 30 minutes I will be dropping in a discussion question for participants to help those who would like a prompt. These questions are totally OPTIONAL to answer! If you miss out on any though, they’ll be pinned for the duration of the chat once they’re posted~! Remember, constructive criticism is allowed, but the primary focus here is to have fun and appreciate the amazing comic~! All that being said, let’s get started and have a great discussion!
QUESTION 1. What is your favorite scene in the comic so far and why?
snuffysam
the most recent couple pages are my favorite
"help me!" hides under cape
Kabocha
Ufufufu. Actually I'm really enjoying the current scene and chapter with Atawn trying to escape. Both he and this guard are in for an adventure... Also, the guard is such a good egg. I hope we find out their name soon.
Respheal
The guard is a good friend
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
yeah i loved the cape thing. mostly cause i appreciate any cape that is big enough to hide a whole person
Respheal
I liked finding the people in the cave because that was the first bit where I was really like "Go on....-scoots forward in seat-"
Kabocha
The stakes are super high, too. Like, I'm already super into the adorable scholar character type, so I want to protect him. I'm a little bit surprised how quickly things escalated. (Well, not really)
YES
I wonder what the deal is
http://pathways.smackjeeves.com/comics/2595217/pathways-58/ We know they're considered Gods now, but it's like. ........ All right, so....... how doomed is everyone, and how many survivors are there going to be out of the researchers, not counting Atawn
snuffysam
doomed from the gods or doomed from getting their camps burned?
Kabocha
It's DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM Does it really matter? I mean, Zealots are gonna zealot....
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
unless the zealots arent zealoting and just know more and are trying to save everyone from the scourge that is their spooky gods
TriaElf9
Eee I'm glad people like the cape bit, I'm so happy we hit it before this chat happened ^_^
🎵Tenor🎶
IDK if ill be back in time but wanted to say I love the story and art and I have so many speculations. Love its presentation and eager 4 more
Kabocha
@✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨ ...Good point. That would be a twist XD
"OUR GODS ARE AWFUL, WE WANTED THEM TO REMAIN BURIED AND DEAD"
snuffysam
"nobody leaves" sounds like a fun way to save people
as does setting their tents on fire
Respheal
My first impression is that the Akarna aren't awful? I didn't get that sorta vibe from them.....in what little we've seen
But yeah, zealots gonna zealot
Kabocha
What types of gods command you to light things on fire?!
The best ones
.......or the worst ones, if they're living things
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
well tbf they couldve lit the tents on fire while the scholars were inside
legit that is what i expected when atawn turned the corner
to just have on fire ppl everywhere
>_>
Respheal
Hahaha kinda x'D
That woulda been baaaaaaaaaaad
As if the situation isn't bad enough as it is
Kabocha
you mean they're not planning to do that now?
I mean, they realized Atawn escaped, if he gets caught, he's SUPER dead
and so is the guard, I'm sure
Respheal
.....probably
They certainly don't want this info leaving
Kabocha
Yeahhhhhhh
Respheal
Makes me wonder if they have some more "humane" way of not letting the information leave
Since clearly the books aren't leaving this camp
(Mind wiping? I dunno lol)
Kabocha
What is the magic like in this world, I wonder :3
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i think they mentioned they were gonna lock them up
so just eternal prison
forever
Respheal
Oh
Kabocha
They're going to get tired of feeding them at some point
TriaElf9
Yeah I will note, that big tent was the main research tent, so essentially they burnt all the information that'd been collected
And yeah, they have indeed started the clock on that, where it leads, we'll have to see ^_-
Kabocha
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
TriaElf9
TELL ME ABOUT IT it's very hard to not just blurt it all out AHHHH
Respheal
x'D
It was smart to tell Atawn to just memorize everything though
Kabocha
I'm not at the point in the comic where I can start spouting conspiracy theories. I MUST KNOW MORE
Respheal
Good bit of foresight there
Kabocha
or am I
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
plot twist: everyone just goes home and lives happily ever after, no deaths. and the bad guys pay for the damages.
TriaElf9
I want to know the theories!!
AHAHAH perfect, it's just festivals and parties until the end
Respheal
All I know is I'm in the "An Akarna person joins the party" party
Kabocha
Ahahahaha
The Guard's actually a spy
Respheal
Wakey, wakey, Akarna person, you've overslept by like a thousand years
Kabocha
He's infiltrated the Mikarna, and is looking to get information out about their gods, and the TRUTH about the Akarna's sudden disappearance
The truth being they have a secret magitek that was sealed away -- because they threatened the world. The other countries engaged in a war with them resulting in a pyrrhic victory... and forcing the Akarna underground for millenia...
.................................And they all had cake
TriaElf9
mmmm cake
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
well at least cake denotes a happy ending O_O
Kabocha
That's the terrible Magitek secret the Akarna had. A killer cake recipe.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
the one cake to rule them all
snuffysam
there's a reason they call it death by chocolate
Kabocha
GASP
TriaElf9
AHAH ^_^
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
aside from the guards since were still on favorite scene i want to mention i really enjoyed the festival montage. it was nice seeing all the activities, and i think the fireworks at the end really tied it all together with some beautiful imagery
Kabocha
A shame they're going to soon be embroiled in an international incident
TriaElf9
Aww, yay! ^_^
eheh
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
well we have to have calm before the storm O_O so ill take what calm i can get
Kabocha
I'm sure there'll be plenty of nice, calm moments
TriaElf9
I actually drew all that after having gone through festival season here, as well as a fireworks festival, so I had a lot of places to draw from for inspiration ^_^
Kabocha
enough for us to get attached to all of the adorable characters
Awww
TriaElf9
OH yes, I want to show the world through down-time as well as the AHHH time ^_^ it can't all be AHHHH or we'd get tired
Kabocha
YES
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i also wanna say i really love that one doublepage where you see the crowd and the wall. i really love that huge sense of scale that makes you go "dang those walls are some marvel of architecture."
Kabocha
The color illustrations for pathways are a treat, too
http://pathways.smackjeeves.com/comics/2534068/chapter-2-the-dig/ Like, even though this is based in what could be a very brown landscape, the reds and greens add such a nice warmth to it, and the cool blues for shading are just pleasant
TriaElf9
Fun fact, that city is actually the smallest of the main cities in Tuvana ^_-
And I'm glad that page came out well, it took foreeeveerrrrrrr
Kabocha
http://pathways.smackjeeves.com/comics/2622607/chpt-3-attack-on-the-camp/ ...To be honest, it took everything in me not to start throwing fire puns when this page came out
Respheal
Do it
Unleash the puns
Kabocha
It's so serious in context, I can't help but make fire jokes
TriaElf9
I love how it was all "yeah, I'm gonna start this comic, it'll be great! I'll just start with....a massive festival... with thousands of people WHY DID I DO THIS TO MYSELF
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i demand fire puns
Respheal
They are both very nice cover pages
Ha! xD
TriaElf9
omh puns are the best
Kabocha
This cover page is HOT -- have you seen it yet?!
TriaElf9
HEHEH
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
beautiful
serious context is even more reason for puns
gotta defuse that tense situation
TriaElf9
so true
Kabocha
The Mikarna really brought the heat!
My passion for this comic cannot be extinguished!
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
but puns aside i do think the chapter covers are really nice. its some immensely beautiful coloring.
TriaElf9
Ah, Miakarna ^_^
but yes, they did bring the heat eheh
aww, thank you! ^////^
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
masterpieces. kabo just gonna have to make a book of puns to story situations
Kabocha
Things are really heating up for the researchers... ....You could say it's... in tents...
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
the holy head guy was like "you need to put the heat on." miakarna set the tents on fire. holy head guy like "I DIDNT MEAN LITERALLY"
Kabocha
PFFFF
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
QUESTION 2. After discovering the supposed Akarna, things go downhill for the scholars at the ruins rather quickly. Do you think that Atawn will manage to escape? If he does, will he actually manage to make it somewhere safe, or will he be pursued and captured eventually anyway? Where will Atawn even go? Why do you think that Miakarna guard is helping Atawn, and will the guard suffer consequences for helping later on? Will Atawn’s records be of use, and if so how? What do you think will happen to the other scholars that Atawn left behind? Lastly, what do you think will be the consequences for the Miakarna regarding their actions? Will they spark a potential war, or will their declaration of the scholars being profane be allowed to stand?
Kabocha
Someone told the Mikarna to light a fire under someone's ass to get all the research disposed of -- they probably weren't meaning literally
TriaElf9
Oh man, all great questions!!!
snuffysam
maybe this whole thing is a misunderstanding. maybe the miakarna are fine with discovering religious secrets, they just don't like holes in the ground.
Kabocha
@snuffysam -- like Trypophobia, just on a large scale?
where there's one hole with people in it, there might be another
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
holes are like graffiti of the earth
cant have hoodlums adding their graffiti
snuffysam
my hope is that atawn and the guard become best buddies and escape to visit taria and friends. and then the gang has a bunch of misadventures in an attempt to quell a brewing holy war.
Kabocha
http://pathways.smackjeeves.com/comics/2610497/pathways-62/ Well, Rykhana'i will probably not take this well. "Oh, yeah, we uh, lost one of your guys, and burnt all their research. No you can't visit them. NO. THEY'RE TOTALLY FINE"(edited)
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
this is assuming they can get word out. which tbh i do think they can
i think atawn will make it
with the guards help
Kabocha
we can hope
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i believe O_O
although i dont think the guard is going to be safe in the long run
Kabocha
Is the guard already raising death flags for you?
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
yes
ankoart
Atawn's gonna escape, but probably be pursued as he tries to tell others about what he's seen. A man on the run! The guard is gonna join him cause he probably knows shady stuff is afoot and feels guilty just standing by and doing nothing. He seems like the thoughtful type, and he probably became a guard to protect and serve others, not deceive them.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
super death flags
the guard is a profaner O_O
Kabocha
To be honest, I think Atawn's more likely to be injured badly and have to adapt, the guard will be fine long-term.
ankoart
-hugs the guard- don't you touch him
TriaElf9
eats popcorn, grinning
Kabocha
oh no
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
yeah i do get the impression the guard has a kind soul at least and is becoming disillusioned
which good for the guard
Kabocha
I still think the guard's a spy
TriaElf9
WHY CAN'T I DRAW THE COMIC FASTERRRR so many parts to get toooo
Kabocha
AHAHAHAHAHAH
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
someone on the inside should be thinking "maybe its us who are the bad guys"
TriaElf9
"are we the baddies?"
ankoart
Maybe the real baddies are the friends we made along the way
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
LOL the plot twist of the century
Kabocha
http://pathways.smackjeeves.com/comics/2550453/pathways-43/ I dunno, Guard totally knows who the baddies are. They're very observant
OH NO ANKO
@TriaElf9 -- ....how long until we find out the Guard's name
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
in regards to the other scholars i also see death flags over them. like i think for now theyll be locked up. but then ya know, public executions of the profane and all that to set an example
im gonna burst out laughing if the guard's name is "Guard"
Kabocha
As soon as Atawn finds a place to stop and write a letter, there's going to be a newspaper or something: "SCHOLARS FIRED"
TriaElf9
AHAH
Respheal
> FIRED
Why
Why do you do this
TriaElf9
We'll learn more about the guard soon, I've drawn those pages already, it's just a matter of getting to them in the posting schedule ^_-
extra extra, read all about it! ^_^
Kabocha
@TriaElf9 appreciates my awful, awful jokes
ankoart
It's good to have things to look forward to reading soon!
Respheal
The guard seems smart, so I imagine they'll make it out of this alright I don't foresee them following the narrative much though? But that's just my guess
TriaElf9
I'm trying to build a buffer, so I'm like a bunch of pages ahead, so I keep getting surprised when I check the site and we're not there yet lol
Kabocha
Aaaaaaa I know this feeling. XD But that's okay
So, so far, I can group everyone in this comic into two distinct groups: "Adorable Characters I must protect" and "Flamethrowers"
Respheal
Yes xD
TriaElf9
EHEH
ankoart
I get the feeling they're gonna be joining the narrative to stay~
Kabocha
Actually, you know.... Could we call this event the start of a... flame war?
TriaElf9
I think the other question is, how is this all going to affect Atawn really ^_-
AHAHAHAH
Respheal
istg
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i feel the guard will be around for a while at least. the guard will rise to help again O_O
atawn will be fine. no years of therapy needed or anything
Kabocha
Yep
Respheal
Oh yeah I imagine the guard'll be back at some point if we do part ways with them now
TriaElf9
no survivor's guilt or anything NAH
Kabocha
definitely no therapy necessary never
Respheal
Ahahahaha poor Atawn x'D
Kabocha
Y'all should look at the vote incentive
snuffysam
atawn and the guard get captured. the rest of the comic is taria and gang doing something completely different.
Respheal
Wait
Waaaaaaaaaaaait
the person behind Atawn
TriaElf9
Oh yeah, my full cast art reveals a lot lol
Respheal
I rescind my remarks; Guardfriend joins the gang
Kabocha
GuardFriend is even more adorable without the helmet
TriaElf9
tho it takes the context of connecting faces and people eheheh
excelleennnttt ^_^
Kabocha
+10 want to protect score
Respheal
Also I do really love the umbrella idea with that art. So cute!
ankoart
I wanna know more about the dragons. Everyone deserves dragon cuddles.
Kabocha
YES OH GOODNESS
the dragons are freakin' CUTE
Respheal
Shvir is a good noodle friend
TriaElf9
I also wanted to do a pride yukata picture, but I just didn't have time that month, sadly
Kabocha
How large do the dragons grow?
TriaElf9
a full cast of 8 characters turned out to be murder on the hands lol
they vary in size
they can be tiny to massive
Kabocha
Oooh
ankoart
I need one
Alakotila
Just in time for the cute dragon talk!!
TriaElf9
I haven't much gotten into the dragon stuff yet, but a few people picked up on some of it during the first chapter
eyy, dragon talk! welcome! ^_^
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
the dragons were cute but i was curious why all the royalty seemed to have them
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
pant pant pant
Sorry I'm late!
snuffysam
maybe just a popular pet
a popular, expensive pet
Respheal
I suspect there's more to it than that
TriaElf9
more popcorn and grinning
Kabocha
I imagine there's some sort of bonding
ankoart
Yeah they seem like more than just "pets." Companion seems a better word
TriaElf9
Companion is a very good word for it ^_^
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Heehee~
So i see you're the creative mind that made this comic, aren't ya Tria?
ankoart
I'd like to know how they find each other, dragons and their people.
TriaElf9
I am indeed ^_^
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Heehee, pleased to meet ya~
TriaElf9
and I'm having such a hard time not just like spilling all the beaannnssss
Kabocha
Are you cackling like mad?
ankoart
Oh no, all these beans!
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
maybe its both. maybe the dragons are companions...but also expensive pets O_O
TriaElf9
cackling ^_^
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
A 500 dollar pet?
Kabocha
Don't spill the beans, they're needed for setsubun
TriaElf9
very true, gotta keep those oni out
I will drop that size of dragons is actually a plot point, there is a reason to size ^_-(edited)
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
oooh?
Kabocha
Ooooh
Interesting...
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Are you hiding something from us?
Kabocha
............................................................................ HMMMMMMM
Well, yes, that's the point of telling a story :'3
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Ye~
Kabocha
things are hidden from the reader and gradually revealed
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
And I like that there's dragons that are friendly to each other
TriaElf9
it's not a huge thing, really, but there are layers to it ^_^
Respheal
It's definitely just the royal people that have dragon companions, since a merchant recognized them as royalty for having dragon companions
A pact, mayhaps?
ankoart
The bigger the dragon the gayer you become
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Hmm, Ice Candy
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i feel like it must be related to magic somehow. but thats all i got on that one. need to see the dragons more.
Kabocha
It's interesting that royalty is easily able to walk amongst their people. Must be a pretty peaceful country.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
As a food enthusiast I need to know exactly what kind fo treat it is
Is it like water ice but with bigger chunks of ice?
Kabocha
It'd be a shame if the Mikarna did something....
TriaElf9
Oh Ice Candy is similar to shaved Ice ^_^
snuffysam
might just be a funny way to say sno cone
yup got it in one
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Heehee
I was thinking of having a snow cone earlier lol
TriaElf9
they call it kakigori at festivals here
and it's one of my go to favs, so I had to include it of course eheheh
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
You live in Japan?
TriaElf9
I do! ^_^
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
That's epic! I always wanted to see what living there was like but I'm too afraid to leave my own home XD It's got everything I could want, but I digress
Kabocha
http://i.imgur.com/sZQnzuA.jpg This, I feel, is an accurate representation of the Mikarna. But, y'know, with fire
Respheal
snrk
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
And I love that the dragons share the treats with their masters~
ankoart
Haha, cat reaction posts are always best
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
So many food vendors too at this fair in the first chapter
Respheal
A cat dragon
snuffysam
i feel like fairs generally have a lot of food vendors?
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Yea
though some just serve lots and lots of fast food
and it's usually the same stuff every time
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
tbf in the comic its the harvest festival
TriaElf9
the dragons are very cat for sure ^_^
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
and well
harvest
food is implied in the name O_O
snuffysam
you know what my favorite thing to harvest is?
ice
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
You have a good point there
TriaElf9
It's basically a matsuri
ankoart
lol
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
>harvesting ice
Kabocha
http://pathways.smackjeeves.com/comics/2521877/pathways-8/ EVERYONE MUST ATTEND AND HAVE FUN
TriaElf9
it's a festival to celebrate a time or a thing, but they also have staple foods at these things
Kabocha
actually, Shvir's expression is just Way too cute there
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
like the aforementioned candy ice?
wondering what flavors they have there too
TriaElf9
various Tuvana fruits flavors probably
also, I am that servant, and Taria is deffo people trying to get me to stop working and GO TO THE DARN MATSURI lol
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i feel like being told its a royal order is a gurantee to not have fun. too much pressure. starts running around forcefully laughing saying, "AM I HAVING FUN NOW!?"
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
In the end it's all about the matsuris
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
QUESTION 3. At the beginning of the comic we are introduced to Taria, Dhiren, and Quinel, royalty far detached from the current situation at the ruins. What do you think their overall roles in the story will be? Will they deal with the situation at the ruins personally, have heavy involvement in the political arena regarding the Miakarna, or will they be involved in some other way? Will Dhiren successfully have his ceremony to celebrate the promise of Cova’t with Jorah, or will the situation with Miakarna throw those plans into disarray? Will Quinel’s role at the House of Healing be significant, and do you consider it foreshadowing of something to come? What about Taria? Will her fighting skills come into play, her apparent charity, or something else?
snuffysam
i think they'll be among the first to find out about the tent-burning
TriaElf9
AHH EVEN MORE GOOD QUESTIONS
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
That's our Rebel!
snuffysam
atawn manages to escape and gets word to them somehow
TriaElf9
Given that Taria and Atawn are from the same country, that's a good bet ^_-(edited)
snuffysam
and honestly quinel being a healer could factor in right then and there
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Maybe~
snuffysam
i doubt he'll escape without a scratch
Kabocha
Taria strikes me as an action princess, so she's going to want to be out there to check on things. I wonder if she knows Atawn though?
Yeah, Quinel's going to be very useful... ............."Yeah, we'll dispatch our best healers to help" ...."Everyone's dead."
TriaElf9
I wonder what the state of necromancy-like magic is in Tuvana? ^_-
Kabocha
.................
OH NO
TriaElf9
This could mean everything OR NOTHING
cackles more
Kabocha
They're going to end up pod people! and then there to wage war against their own peoples!
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
quinel for resident necromancer
Kabocha
NO
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Finally, I binged all the way to the end so far!
Respheal
Just need a lot of diamonds.........#dnd(edited)
TriaElf9
We also have 3 more characters to meet ^_-
Kabocha
I object to this! Atawn strikes me as much more likely to approach Necromancy from a scholarly point of view.
TriaElf9
I can't wait for chapter 4 ahhhhhhhh
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
3 more to meet, you say? :3
TriaElf9
so many diamonds
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
quinel's healing will be useful tho. healers are always useful.
Alakotila
hohohoho
TriaElf9
need that revial spell lol
Alakotila
I guess I can't say anything there
Kabocha
OH DEAR
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
Made it for the second hour. ^.^
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
hey math~!
Kabocha
ALAKOTILA KNOWS SPOILERS
TriaElf9
woo, welcome! ^_^
OH RIGHT
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
I also like Atawn's water-generating ability
Alakotila
EDITOR IN THE HOUSE
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
also HEY MATH!
TriaElf9
MY EDITOR KNOWS THINGSS
Kabocha
:'3
Respheal
That was handy xD "Oh, no access to water....welp. -generates water-"
Alakotila
that was a whole ton of good questions up there Rebel!
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
speaking of the water-generating ability i was super stoked to see magic used for something practical like that
thank you
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Oh, you're the editor of this here story?
Alakotila
yeah! that was awesome!
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
Hmm, so the royalty will probably have to try and calm down the populus when they see all the smoke from the fire.
snuffysam
how far away is the site?
Alakotila
just the copy editor! all fabulousness is created by @TriaElf9 !
Respheal
I imagine the camp is pretty far away
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
There is hydrogen and oxygen in the air, just need the magical bonds.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Sometimes mundane is all you need
And nice X3
Kabocha
If you really want it to explode, just break those bonds
TriaElf9
yes, they check me on my very over use of commas and my rambling ahah
Kabocha
and uh ....add a spark
ahahahah
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
lol
TriaElf9
Yeah the camp is pretty far and surrounded mostly by mountains
we'll see more of the land in the next upcoming bit
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Oh Tria, I have a small idea for the sit if you're the one that made/coded it(edited)
Kabocha
Rumors of the scholars' fate may spread like wildfire once Atawn escapes....
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
so i feel like war is for sure brewing and theyll have to try and stop it. cause at the very least i think this current discovery is gonna make the miakarna invade all the ruins which iirc are spread out on all four lands
TriaElf9
and I'm glad you're liking the magic! I'm really proud of the system and can't wait to share more ^_^
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Yea, it's really good magic~!
Kabocha
The Akarna ruled the world with their cake recipes!
Alakotila
CAKE
Kabocha
I mean, they were considered Gods... OF BAKING
TriaElf9
Oh and no, I have loads of help on the site, I'm useless at those things lol
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Lol, alright then
ankoart
Now I wanna make cake
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Cause I thought of suggesting using the arrow keys to navigate through pages
instead of just clicking the page
also
DID SOMEONE SAY CAKE?
TriaElf9
I always want cake, I went out and got cake during last night's typhoon
Kabocha
Ooooh, what kind of cake though
ankoart
-stares at bag full of ingredients to make ace dessert- maybe I'll finally do that this weekend
Respheal
....-wants cake now-
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
I got italian ices during a bad thunderstorm
Alakotila
that's pretty extreme cake getting lol
TriaElf9
I think the arrows do navigate?
snuffysam
this... this is the true power of the Akarna!
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
They take the cake.
TriaElf9
I got strawberry shortcake b/c of course ^_^
Kabocha
I think Justin means using the arrow keys on the keyboard
TriaElf9
ooooh
ankoart
YOU BOUGHT CAKE DURING THE TYPHOON? (Haha I thought about stopping by a conbini actually but I was actually soaked)
Kabocha
That... might be doable...
TriaElf9
I have no idea if SJ has the ability to do that ^_^;;
Respheal
It does, I can link ya
Kabocha
throw it at me
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
Back on fave scene, I just wanted to mention I liked the bit near the start where it looked like as the people were meeting back up, so were the dragons. That was just a nice little detail. Hadn't expected different breeds of dragon.
Alakotila
the dragons are wonderful
TriaElf9
oooh I love that bit!
Kabocha
Shvir is like... a noodle cat dragon
TriaElf9
and yes, I wanted to vary dragon types ^_^
Kabocha
also the meeps are great
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
I wonder how many dragon species total exist
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
And in terms of theories, when they first found the door, I wondered if they'd open it and that high priest guy would just be sitting there with a TV. And he'd go, "Well damn, you found my tech man-cave. Now I have to kill you."
Did not expect the frozen gods.
TriaElf9
EHEH
Kabocha
Are they frozen or just... On ice?
TriaElf9
pay no attention to the man behind the curtain
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
Ice see what you did there.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i expected religion breaking secrets but not frozen gods
Kabocha
It looks vaguely computerized. They need an IT person to come in and take a look before the whole system freezes up
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
for a sec I thought they were mummified
ankoart
They're taking a long nap. I relate to them.
TriaElf9
Also, dragon-wise, so far we've met Tova, Shvir and Var ^_^
snuffysam
the secret is that's where candy ice comes from!
the frozen gods!
ankoart
Ice candy, god flavor
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
Interesting that the most important God was at the top, as opposed to at the bottom. Is it really safe up there? Is that also where the power is being generated? (And are they "on ice" in a magical way or a tech one?)
snuffysam
"And are they "on ice" in a magical way or a tech one?" is there really a significant difference?
Kabocha
The ice treats are like soylent green
Respheal
por que no los dos?(edited)
Magitek cryostasis
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
Well, this is mostly a magical world, but that area was only recently getting magic, hence the desert. Maybe there's an incompaitiblity... or maybe all the magic was being absorbed by the stasis tubes. So could make a difference for plot.
TriaElf9
oh mannnn I'm loving this AND equally tortured that I can't say anything aHAHAH
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Hmmmm
You're onto something Math
TriaElf9
I'll be dropping more in chapter 4, so look forward to that ^_-
snuffysam
yeah i'm just saying that in this world, it seems like magic has a big impact on technology, and vice versa
TriaElf9
I wish there was a plotting emoticon
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
Gotcha.
Maybe the dragons are actually mechanical beings.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
yeah i feel like its significant that it looks like theyre being preserved by technology in a world where there isnt a lot of technology around or so it seems
TriaElf9
I will say some of the things people have said today are indeed on the right track
now the question is WHICH of the things muhahahah
Alakotila
hmmm yes
where did the tech come from?
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
I wonder that as well
Respheal
Aliens
Alakotila
ALIENS
Kabocha
They're gods because of the tech!
TriaElf9
that's another emoticon we need
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
"What solved the world crisis?" "Aliens."
Kabocha
any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic!
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
The shipping of Atawn and that Guard is the right track, yes? Surely someone already proposed that?
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Always blame it on them
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
The Gods are actually aliens. They crash landed here and decided to seal themselves away from the cavemen until there was a decent enough civilization to rule over.
Alakotila
setting ships sailing is fun
snuffysam
actually i don't think anyone mentioned the atawn x guard ship
Kabocha
They gave people enough to get started, then went into stasis until they could take over
snuffysam
even though it's a pretty good one
TriaElf9
I've gotten some comments on the comic about it, but not here yet
Kabocha
"Yeaaaaaaaaaaah, your world isn't comfortable enough... we'll be back when you make it better..."
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
snuffy: Glad I corrected that oversight then.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
i feel the atawn x guard ship is just obvious is all. they got all them googly eyes going.
Kabocha
Ahahaha, right?
Alakotila
LOL rebel
Kabocha
but more than anything, I want to protect them both
Alakotila
do they
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
Rebel: Maybe the Guard has a nice sister he wants to marry off, who knows.
Alakotila
I gotta look closer for the googly eyes
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
"I want a smart guy, but not a guy who's TOO smart. The scholar who dehydrates himself will do nicely."
TriaElf9
AHAHAH
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
no the lol part is to the fact i now cant unpicture them with googly craft eyes glued to their eye lids.
http://www.hobbycraft.co.uk/supplyimages/564756_1000_1_800.jpg
ya know those kind
TriaElf9
dehydration is definitely something to look for in an SO
Alakotila
oh so those kinds
yeah
I can see how that would give the ship away
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
"Stay hydrated!!"
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
"You know where there's some moisture? In mah mouth..."
TriaElf9

MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
"I have a spell though." "Oh, well fine."
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
thats gonna be the guard's best selling pick up line book
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
In terms of the fact that there's new characters we haven't met - there's four kingdoms who can lay claim to that one area, right? And we've seen two of them...? Maybe there will be counterpoints to Taria. (Or is Dhiren already one?)
Like, they'll have a Summit.
TriaElf9
Dhiren and Quinel are from another kingdom yeah
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
dhiren and quinel are both from kuvar
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
I really want to see the other kingdoms now that you mention it
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
I am SO bad with names.
TriaElf9
The only one we've yet to see is Durhan
lol me too, and I wrote them ahah
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
this is why notes exist
especially when you got a billion fantasy names
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
"There's these four kingdoms, uh... A B C and D."
TriaElf9
I changed the spelling on a few, and I keep getting confused eheh
yuup, I have so many lore notes ehehe
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
Do they speak different languages in the different kingdoms, I wonder?
Or is magic the universal langauge?
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
thats a good question
about languages
Kabocha
We can probably safely assume the characters all are fairly well educated
Alakotila
Is there a common tongue?
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
When magic's involved, spelling counts.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Yes
snuffysam
to be fair, we don't know if the guard is well educated
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Who knows what can happen if you mis-pronounce a certain spell
snuffysam
he may have just been hired to stand there
Kabocha
I dunno, I'm still going with spy theory
TriaElf9
there is at least a common tongue, yes
so far we've seen that and magic
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
snuffy: True, but they probably don't want people who are too dense walking over the scholars.
"This is actually a recipe for biscuits, yes."
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
QUESTION 4. The comic quickly makes it apparent that there are many mysteries afoot regarding the past. In regards to the ruins, what do you think the Miakarna are hiding and why? Did they know about the supposed Akarna there? Are they protecting the land simply because they believe it’s holy? Alternatively, is something else going on? What lengths do you think the Miakarna are willing to go to protect the ruins? Atawn also briefly mentions that magic had not returned to the area the ruins are in. What do you think that means for the past and present day of the story’s world? Of a last note, do you believe the people under the ruins are the Akarna, and if so, what are they doing there?
TriaElf9
SO MANY GOOD QUESTIONS
Kabocha
Qualifications for being a Mikarna guard: -The ability to yell "PROFANER" in at least 3 different languages -Looks good in helmets -OK with bringing the heat(edited)
TriaElf9
EHEHEH
snuffysam
the way the miakarna were acting was like there was a specific thing they didn't want the scholars to find. so i think this was that thing.
TriaElf9
and an almost fanatical devotion to the Akarna
snuffysam
like each day they seemed more worried that the archaeologists were going to find something
Kabocha
The Miakarna probably knew, or had an inkling of what they'd find, just not WHERE and when. And they're hoping to harvest that sweet, sweet cake technology
TriaElf9
hey, cool cake in a desert? priceless
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
snuffy: I got the impression that they didn't know what it was they were even protecting though. Like, they didn't want them to find... something... this is probably it, burn it all.
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Of course
use fire at first resort
Great idea
TriaElf9
people knowing things and straying from their control is BAD
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨
Yes(edited)
snuffysam
i'd hate to see what the miakarna will use after fire fails to get atawn
Kabocha
OH GOSH
THE AKARNA KNEW... how to make ice cream cake
like the perfect ice cream cake
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
Unless the Miakarna are actually under the mental control of the Akarna. Subconsciously or not.
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
im gonna be honest i think its a mix. like the miakarna were told something vague like "this is the final resting place of the akarna" cause there has to be a reason they already considered the land sacred. so they knew theyd find something they either proved that right or wrong. and then ya know, they found pods.
Kabocha
GO HOME EVERYONE WE'VE SOLVED THE CONSPIRACY
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨

Kabocha
.............
darnit
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
the miakarna being under the control of the akarna sounds interesting though
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
Rebel: Or maybe they were just told that where the magic was weakest was the final resting place or something. Way vague, which is why they don't want anyone until they figure it out themselves.
Alakotila
it does make sense they'd have been told something vague AT LEAST in order to consider it sacred
I wonder if they expected to find what they did
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
Arkarna are all telepaths.
Kabocha
The Akarna were the ones who made the desert
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑

✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
as a general semi crack, semi serious theory, i think theres gonna be war as the miakarna block the others from the ruins. but then theyll wake up an akarna. and then the akarna will yawn and wage an even bigger war and everyone will have to come together to scream oh shit oh shit the gods want to murder us.
Respheal
Ahahaha I can get behind this theory x'D
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
never trust the pod ppl
Respheal
The pod gods
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
better, even more specific
Kabocha
An ancient empire awakens, bent on reclaiming the world they once dominated. A small group of people, drawn together by a common cause, are determined to stop them. However, they face more than threats from the outside.... I mean, the synopsis of the comic is this....
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
dont trust pod gods
Superjustingo of ✨Time🕑&Space☄✨

MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
Rebel, I can totally see that. Suddenly the Miakarna wave the white flags, "Stop shooting at us, we're under attack from within too."

GASP
MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
They're also probably great at dodging magic, if they're spending a lot of time defending a region that doesn't use it.

maybe this will be a technology vs magic war. cause the akarna could be technology wizards instead of regular magic wizards. and the akarna are the reason magic went away.

TriaElf9
so does Vala

I guess it's connected to Kingdoms.
TriaElf9
yup, it's just a little detail ^_^
it's actually not a spoiler or anything, it's just a genetic variation in this world

There's also, like, foreground-background in places.
Kabocha
@TriaElf9 -- now, I have to ask one question before it gets to the end... Is ther ea character we'll get to shout "YOU HAD ONE JOB" at
and will they have a ribbon
TriaElf9
it's more of a "this isn't Earth" tidbits ^_^
✨🐱 RebelVampire 🐱✨
is there any sort of discrimination caused by the difference in ears or is everyone shrugging about it?

MathTans the super Pun 👑Prince👑
Yeah, definitely didn't expect the pods... I wonder if they're all actually functioning? Oooh, what if they're all just holograms?

If I Were Inquisitor - Ask Meme.
@batsintheshadows @tea-me-and-smut @foxywolfmeerkat13 @howling-at-night OMG THIS IS SO FUN YOU GUYS HOLY SHIT!! Thanks so much for writing yours, and I’m so stoked to finally share mine!
If you are reading this and want to give it a shot, please reblog the original post and I’ll send you an ask! I LOVE THIS SO MUCH, I LOVE READING PEOPLE’S ANSWERS. THEY’RE ALL. SO GOOD!!!!
1. Race: I want to be a giant muscley mountain of a Qunari. I wanna be the very best, like no-one ever was, at smashing my enemies’ faces in and giving the best goddamn hugs there is.
2. Class/Specialization: Two-handed Warrior/Champion. I like hitting things, and I love the idea of getting involved in all that pompous Orlesian chevalier bullshit and RUINING IT for ALL OF THEM.
3. Your homeland? It’s gotta be somewhere warm and by the sea (because I love the ocean and also I can’t deal with the cold cos I am WEAK), so I’m thinking Rivain. Ooh! And that would mean I’d have a bunch of sick tattoos and piercings! Rad.
4. Your family? (Ok so I’m basing this loosely off my irl family because they’re my best point of reference I guess????)
So, my family. I love them, but they’re a mess.
My Mum was the ideal Tamassran. A devout adherent to the Qun. She worked as a healer and was very well respected in her field.
That was until she met my Dad, who in short, looked at the Qun and was like ‘fuck this shit I’m out.’
Dad was a soldier and one day he was wounded in battle, ended up in the hospice where Mum worked, wooed her, and they ran away together to Rivain.
They had my brother and I and then realised that they’re actually polar opposites and it’s a wonder they were ever attracted to each other. They split up, re-partnered and had more kids. So I have a pile of siblings that I have varying degrees of blood relation with, but we all consider each other fully part of our extended, convoluted family (for serious - irl I have 9 siblings).
Mum taught me business sense and how to tend to battle wounds, Dad taught me how to fight. I’ve got a lot of family of various races all over Thedas, all related (not necessarily by blood) one way or another. People say lovely things about my Mum, and the craziest things about my Dad - the stories of his exploits are so outrageous it’s difficult to believe any of them are true (like irl my dad was involved in organised crime for a while but quit cos he got bored????).
I love my family but I’m really bad at keeping in contact with them, so I get the occasional letter from Mum being like ‘ARE YOU DEAD?!’
Leliana has taken to sending her reassuring updates preemptively.
5. Who were you before? I imagine I’d be part of something like a dnd adventuring party.
We started out as a ragtag group of misfits, travelling the land in search of gold and glory. It was mostly treasure hunting and mercenary gigs, and some of the work we did on the high seas was um, legal-adjacent (piracy). But occasionally we’d stop to lend a hand to those in need, pass ourselves off as bards to earn extra coin in small-town taverns, and we even involved ourselves in vigilante justice a couple of times.
We grew into our own little family, and eventually we found ourselves wanting to do the type of work that really mattered. That’s why we signed ourselves up to work security at the Conclave, with a plan to move into aiding refugees in Ferelden afterwards. It didn’t. Quite. Work out that way. Unfortunately.
6. Would you be religious? That’s a hard no.
7. Do you have a mabari? YES PUPPY! Who is also a fully fledged member of our adventuring troupe I might add.
8. Your opinion on other races? Elves = rad, dwarves = awesome, humans = eh, dragons?? = HELL YES
9. What would Varric’s nickname for you be? Stubby.
10. What would your tarot card look like? This one is hard! I’m thinking a lot of compass imagery (because the sea and travelling and finding your way etc.)...and I’d have to be facing at an angle that best accentuates my glorious biceps.
11. Where would you hang out in Skyhold? I like to be in the centre of the action, but I’m not sure where that would be?? Probably in the main Skyhold courtyard near the entrance, in amongst the merchants? It’d be a good spot to see the comings and goings, check in with recruits and workers for the Inquisition, and also play with any kids who might be around.
It’s important to make sure the kids of the Inquisition are happy and healthy and, um, ok Josie I’ll admit it, they’re also way more fun to hang out with than that stuffy noble whoeverthefuck you just brought in from Orlais.
12. What would you do for fun? Knock back beers in the Herald’s Rest with my companions, come up with dirty drinking songs with Sera, get blackout drunk with Dorian (although I’ll eventually realise it’s a very unhealthy coping mechanism and encourage Dorian to join me in cutting down the booze), swap stories and quality bants with Varric, beg Vivienne for fashion advice, gush over romance novels with Cass, have tea and gossip sessions with Josie, poke fun at Cullen, spar with the Inquisition recruits (and scare the shit out of them), and, just anything to distract from the looming horror that is Corypheus.
13. What armour would you wear? Heavy, shiny, and bloodstone red.
14. What would your room look like? Organised chaos. I love playing host so my room would look mostly neat, but the writing desk would be an absolute mess. It would probably make poor Josie hyperventilate (which is why I’d always suggest we discuss things in her office, or at least give me plenty of notice before swinging by my chambers so I can tidy up).
15. Who would be your friends at Skyhold? I’d wanna be friends with pretty much everyone, but I think I’d be closest with Dorian (BUT of course only after giving him a solid scolding for his views on slavery, and I’d only continue talking to him if he came to his senses).
We have a very similar sense of humour, and. Oh man. I have way more feelings about this than I thought I would. In short - I can imagine both laughing with him and collapsing on the floor together with a bottle of wine (each) and many tears.
16. Would you have any friends outside of the Inquisition? This makes me sad because my closest friends outside the Inquisition would be my adventuring party and they..would’ve...the Conclave...EVEN MY MABARI. MY POOR PUPPY. OH GOD WHY. TOO MANY FEELINGS.
17. Who wouldn’t you get along with? Cole. It’s not that I don’t like him, I’d just be super awkward around him, like ‘HELLO SPIRIT CHILD HOW ARE YOU TODAY. OH, IS THAT AN INSECURITY OF MINE YOU JUST POINTED OUT?! WELL COOL, GOOD TALK.’
18. Who would you romance? I know this isn’t possible in Inquisition but I would like to be in a polyamorous relationship with Isabela. SHE IS MY FICTIONAL SOULMATE OK.
(Also I’m more than a little bit in love with Cullen but I hate myself for it so)
19. Would you do pranks with Sera? AbsoLUTELY.
20. Would you sleep with the Iron Bull (casually if not romance)? 100% YES. It’d only be an occasional thing tho, cos while I’m a masochist and I like being tied up I’m not really a sub. I’d mostly go to him for bondage tips and um. Requests for. Demonstrations.
21. Would you keep Cole around? Yes. I’d still be weirded out by him, but I acknowledge that it’s completely not his fault. I’d take his word for it that he just wants to help people and let him have at it with that freaky mind-reading and vanishing shit he does.
22. Can you play the game (politics)? A little bit. I’d have to work the scandal angle. Being a Qunari I could never hope to assimilate into the realms of the nobility, but I could win their favour by being something of a novelty. Much like Casanova in this brilliant adaptation starring David Tennant - watch from 10:42.
You see, you don’t have to be liked by everybody, just the right people, and you can usually get them onside by just being very fucking entertaining.
23. What would be on your tombstone in the fade (What are you afraid of)? Ghosts. I’m not sure how well that translates to a Thedas setting but still, it’s my biggest fear so I’m sticking with it.
24. Who would you recruit to seal the breach? Mages.
25. Opinion on Mages versus Templars? Ok, so I have a proposal for how to fix this bullshit:
1. The Chantry should relinquish any and all control over the affairs of mages. Separation of Church and State, simple as that.
2. The Templar Order should be disbanded, and the practice of indenturing soldiers by saddling them with a lyrium addiction should be banned.
3. All people in Thedas (and I mean ALL) should be taught about magic from a young age, both the gifts and dangers of its use. Everyone should learn about magical safety and how to resist demonic possession.
4. Mage children should attend the same schools as everyone else, but they can hone their skills in their late teens to early adulthood in mage colleges, with free tuition paid by the State (of wherever part of Thedas this is). They can research magic, learn a trade or train in combat, whatever they choose. Mages will be allowed to earn money, marry, have families, and have some actual freaking rights. None of this ‘hunt ‘em down and lock ‘em up’ bullshit.
5. Also the Rite of Tranquility WHAT THE FUCK. I can’t believe it’s a thing people actually agree to do. This rite should be downright fucking outlawed, and severe penalties levelled at the people who attempt it.
26. Who would be put in charge of Orlais and why? Briala. I wouldn’t suggest to Briala that she should get back together with Celene, because honestly their relationship was really fucked up and Celene abused the power imbalance between them. Briala deserves better (like for example me..maybe...but y’know, only if she wants to..)
So I would keep Celene on the throne but hand over all real power to Briala. Celene is a crafty one however, so we’d have to corner her with blackmail and keep a hidden killswitch on hand in case she tries to pull a fast one on us (just like the Voltron kids should be doing with Lotor, which sorry, I know that isn’t related but I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT IT).
27. Would you sacrifice the Chargers? NEVER.
Seriously Fuck the Qun. The Qun actively promotes eugenics with how they selectively “breed” their people. ALSO the Qunari are gaslighted into believing that they will literally go insane if they don’t follow the Qun?!!!?!?!!??!??! FUCK THAT SHIT.
So yeah, I was never keen on the idea of allying with the Qunari, so when Gatt’s like ‘if you sacrifice the dreadnought there will be no alliance’ I’m like ‘I am ok with this.’ Also, of course, I love the Chargers with all my heart and couldn’t bear to lose them.
28. Would you go after Blackwall? Yeah. He should put all his moral posturing to good fucking use and try being an actual hero. I’d make him join the Wardens, cos it’s effectively a death sentence (or an early grave at least ) and I don’t 100% dislike him, so I know he’d be cool with it because he has a giant fucking hard-on for the Wardens (Jesus fuck).
29. Would you drink from the well? Nnnnnoooooooooo..and it’s because I would fucking die for Morrigan. I wish I could say I have a well considered reason, but I’m just pathetic like that. She could say jump and I’d say ‘I’d rather not, but, counter offer - would you instead like to sit on my face?’
30. Where would you go if the Inquisition was disbanded? Minrathous. It’s warmer there (I love Skyhold but fucking hate the cold), and I would involve myself in the inevitable slave uprising - helping out in whatever way I can. Also I’d just be having a fucking great time terrorising the Magisters, rocking up at the Magisterium like ‘LOOKIT ME I’M A RAGING QUNARI HERE TO INVADE, RARRGHH!! oh hey Dorian, what’s up babe how’ve you been????’

"It" 2017 -this film had me exhausted and pumped with adrenaline at the end. It was visceral, terrifying, sweet, and so damn satisfying -what I also liked about it was how tender and thoughtful it was towards its child characters; it really made us care for them via patience and watched behaviors, which made their fear and tensions ours to share -the first scene with pennywise and Georgie might be the most disturbing +put aside the clown make up, and the dialogue ("now we know each other, and aren't strangers, right? So we can play together") and actions sounds like how a predator would court a child. Unnerving -the moment where Georgie realizes his mistake and the film hangs in the air had the audience in stunned silence -Mike Hanlon's experience with his grandfather and how "there are two choices; the sheep in there or the decider out here" is presented "a sad but necessary" to grasp way. It is perfectly underscored by him being black in a predominately white US town +personally, even if one has to accept it, I still find it upsetting and would do anything to change it -I don't think there is a single appearance of a healthy, happy parent couple. All of the adults are alone and miserable(do we ever see Georgie's mom?), which certainly adds to the deeply buried bitterness the town seems to exude -the moments with the initial members of the losers club being themselves and bickering about summer time off etc is so endearing and goofy -so if pennywise comes ever 27 years, and the film predominately takes place in 1989 U.S., does that mean when he comes back in 2016 he's going to scare everyone -create bitterness by running for president? -Sophia Lillis does an outstanding job as Beverley. Bev's determination to survive and outwit rumors, bullying, and a frighteningly abusive dad makes her the most relatable and compelling character to me. Lillis nails it in every scene. -the scene where Ben is reading about Derry and keeps flipping the pages to reveal a decapitated child's head blown into a tree is so damn creepy -note also how the librarian who brought the book is by herself in the background, looking intently at Ben, as if to rush him at any minute. Then we see the librarian ask Ben a question from the other side of the room... -nice touch with the smoldering Easter eggs leading him down a path to a trap -really effective stuff like the headless body stumbling and dropping eggs -it's been a really, really long time since I've seen a muscularity publicized horror film that is willing to cheat reality via film techniques to create truly spooky and creepy imagery (as opposed to jump scares); +its immensely satisfying to just see a film like this go to the (fear) jugular -among those who have read the book, one thing they mentioned was the part with the adults was cosmically weird, and the mini series couldn't touch it, budget wise. This film is teasing and rubber banding reality, and it might well shatter it in the future -the motormouth kid character is actually pretty funny, and the film goes to create length to craft the lines and leave space for the audience to digest them -"if someone comes, do what you do best. Talk. +"hey, it's a gift!" -all of Beverley's dad ultra disgusting obsession with her sexuality reminds me so much of those U.S. Christian dads who ask their daughters to pledge their virginity to them until marriage (and then symbolic dancing) +This is something so very controlling and sexist about that mentality, and it says something about it that it seems at home with an adult sexually abusing a child -speaking of Bev, the scene with the hair dragging her face to the sink and then exploding it with blood is amazing in its willingness to go far -this film has so many musical interludes that come like leaves in the wind; some linger, some whisp in and out -I don't know why it took this film for me to realize it, but the cure is one of those bands that everyone thinks of when they think the eighties (whether that is the early not quite prime eighties, or capital E Eighties) -backing up a bit, I like the part of the young Jewish boy who is completely disinterested in the religious aspect of the culture, much to the chagrin of the rabbi father -one of the best moments is all the boys in their underwear, scared to jump into the lake (20 feet below) but Beverley showing them up -Henry must be one demented motherfucker if he wants to bully a kid then carve his entire name via knife on the stomach of said kid -I get that we later see his dad as abusive monster, but people come out of those situations without turning to sadists. To a certain extent, perhaps Henry can only turn to what he knows -I don't think it's a coincidence that later with blood in his face, he looks just like pennywise -speaking of which, when that older couple drives by Henry carving Ben, they don't even slow down, but a red balloon shows up in the back window -how much does pennywise control? Where does the illusion for fear begin and reality end? That blurring is one of the strongest reasons this film gets under the skin -did anyone else think that the film was going to end after they escaped the house when they said they gotta life? (The "dear god" musical segment)? I sure did -the part where Beverly beats the shit out of her dad and kills him is so satisfying - almost as good is when Edfie tells his mom to stop trying to control him, stop feeding him pulls he doesn't need +"I know these are gazebos! They're bullshit!" -nice touch with the cast saying loser, but trying to v it to lover -the sight of all the children floating in air took my breath away -I can't think of any other word than jaw dropping to describe the scene when Bill knows that his brother Georgie is dead and summons all his courage to shoot pennywise in the head -by the time we get to the losers club beating up pennywise, I was so emotionally exhausted from him terrorizing them, that it felt like I just finished a marathon; burning victory -the visual pleasure of seeing the clown get beaten and speared is so beautiful; +the representational reality like a Jackson pollack for the heart -this film had me utterly entranced from the first scene to the last. I for once eagerly await the second installment , because it more than delivered the goods here (rather than hold back to tease us for sequels) -this is a horror film proud to play with that world and tradition, and works great at the primal instincts that the genre taps so well into. A monumental viewing experience and film I had a blast with

The Legend of the 52 Blocks
I don’t know how I first heard about the 52 Blocks. Like much of New York City’s urban mythology—such as the Decepticons gang, the tunnels under Alphabet City, or the albino alligators and alligator-sized rats in the sewers—the legendary hand-to-hand combat style seemed to always hover just outside my conscious knowledge, a whisper from an unclear direction.
Certainly, though, I heard references to the 52 scattered in lyrics by rappers such as Nas protégé Nature and Wu Tang affiliate Killa Sin. The Wu-Tang Clan, in particular, seems to have an affinity for the 52. GZA, Ghostface Killah, Method Man, and various Killa Bee affiliates have all rhymed about the 52. The most memorable lyric about the 52 is probably Meth’s line from his and Redman’s “1,2,1,2”: “52 cops/ Can’t withstand the 52 Blocks/ Unless they bust like 52 shots.”
While working as a night security guard in Manhattan several years ago, I got into a conversation with a guy on the maintenance crew. The man bragged about the various fighting styles he’d studied in his lifetime, swinging his mop handle like a Japanese bō. Considering that he had spent his youth in a reform school in the Rockaways in the ‘70s, and was ostensibly an expert in various fighting forms, I asked him if he knew anything about the 52 Blocks.
“52 Blocks?” he sneered. “That’s ghetto shit. It’s nothing.”
A few minutes later, a buddy of mine who was also on the maintenance crew came upstairs. He was less of a martial arts aficionado, but was a tough guy and had spent some time locked upstate in the ‘90s, so I asked him the same question.
“Yeah.” he said. A smile spread across his face. “Yeah.” He quickly directed me to bring up YouTube on the security computer and search for round five of Judah vs. Mayweather. He knew the exact round of the fight off the top of his head. Chapter and verse. We watched the clip in silence. Mayweather dominates for the first couple minutes, landing several punches, and driving Zab Judah into the corner. Then, a switch flips, and Judah steps forward into the center of the ring. He pulls his elbows in tight, and his arms pivot back and forth across his face like a butterfly flapping its wings.
“You tell me what this is,” an announcer says in disbelief. Mayweather steps backwards—his infamous cockiness drained away—and Judah lands a righteous combination. So this was the 52 Blocks. It was something after all. And it was beautiful.

Even the name of 52 Blocks is shrouded in mystery. Some say it describes a catalogue of individual moves with fanciful names like the “skull and crossbones.” Others dismiss this, and say that the name is a metaphor for a general style, coming from the game of “52 pickup,” where cards are allowed to fall where they may. Still others say that that the “block” in question is a specific cellblock. Indeed, an alternate name for the 52 is “the Comstock Shuffle,” a reference to The Great Meadow Correctional Facility in Comstock, New York.
Whether it’s 52 Blocks or Comstock, the term refers to a purported codified New York prison system-specific style of Jail House Boxing, aka Jail House Rock. This is held in contrast to related styles in other prison systems, like New Jersey and Pennsylvania, which are rumored to vary, be less codified, and go by different names. The moves themselves supposedly reflect the prison environment. The idea is that the tight stances, lack of far-ranging movement, and emphasis on survival and defense were designed to function in in the confines of a prison cell than a ring. Rumors abound online about a predatory gay 52 Blocks prison master named Mother Dear—and the authoritative Martial Arts of the World: An Encyclopedia even implies that he originated the style himself at Rikers. There is no record of this man’s actual identity.
The first reference in print to this type of fighting style apparently came in a 1974 issue of Black Belt magazine, in a feature on prison karate. Most of the article focuses on the clandestine practice of traditional karate in prisons in New York State and elsewhere, but the conclusion focuses on the more interesting “In House Arts.” Black Belt treats the prison fighting styles as “impromptu” variations on hand-to-hand combat styles used by incarcerated military veterans, and refers to them by facility-specific names, such as “Coxsackie variation” and “Comstock style.”
Amazingly, the afroed-man photographed demonstrating the Comstock style is Miguel Piñero, the famous poet and playwright of the Nuyorican arts movement. Black Belt could not have found a more appropriate model. In his, “A Lower East Side Poem,” Piñero describes himself as, “a street fighting man.” He goes on to explain that he is, “a dweller of prison time/ a cancer of Rockefeller's ghettocide/ this concrete tomb is my home/ to belong to survive you gotta be strong.”
The first direct journalistic reference to 52 Blocks does not seem to have come until the late date of 1999, though, in Douglas Century’s Street Kingdom: Five Years Inside the Franklin Avenue Posse, an immersive account of a Crown Heights gang in the early ‘90s. Century followed up two years later with an eye-opening article about the 52 Blocks in the recently-shuttered fashion magazine, Details. In his book, Century describes “fifty-two hand-blocks” as “a style of hand-to-hand combat developed in the New York State Penal system and widely practiced amongst gang members on the streets of Brooklyn in the ‘70s and ‘80s.” This is as good a definition as any (though some folks from the Bronx or Harlem might object to the geographic specificity). In the Details article, Century quotes Dennis Newsome, a well-known Capoeira master and martial arts scholar, providing his own definition of the 52 Blocks: “Basically it’s an artistic butt-whuppin’ … It’s just part of Black aesthetics.” Newsome goes on to argue that the racially-segregated nature of prison meant that only African American inmates learned the style.
Lore has it that the 52 Blocks worked its way down from the prisons to the streets in the ‘70s. This is plausible; street style has always reflected prison culture, and moves that would work in the confines of prisons would work just as well in the confines of the similarly-designed housing projects which had come to dominate New York City’s ghettos in the era of urban renewal. Because any effective fighting style would essentially be contraband, an illicit weapon smuggled in and out of prison, it would have had to remain underground. Whether it referred to legend or fact, the name 52 Blocks was restricted to argot. This secrecy is part of what makes it so difficult to trace or verify much of this history.
Through a shared association with the prison system, the 52 Blocks came to be connected in many people’s minds with the self-mythologizing Nation of Gods and Earths, more commonly known as the Five Percenters. The history of the Five Percenters is too complex to get into here, but it is a fascinating movement which was founded by a former Nation of Islam minister named Clarence 13X, aka Father Allah, in Harlem in the ‘60s. The Five Percenters’ unique approach to language has had a profound impact on Hip Hop, and modern American slang.
The Five Percenter lessons—themselves an enumerated code of arcane knowledge often learned in prison—could be seen as a mental parallel to the 52 Blocks, just as many Eastern practices have both a spiritual and physical aspect. In his book, Tao of 52, self-declared expert Diallo Frazier writes: “52 was called God Blocks because in the science of Supreme math, the number 7 is the number of GOD. When you add 5 and 2 you get 7 …” Narratives of receiving esoteric transmission of religious and martial instruction behind bars have a strong appeal for many people have been incarcerated, as they allow the years spent in prison to be viewed as time spent gaining knowledge, rather than simply wasted.

In the early 1970s, perceptions of Asian martial arts began to influence New York street culture through the popular imported Kung Fu movies. Aficionados had long traveled to movie theatres on Canal Street in Chinatown, but the explosion of martial arts film screenings in midtown meant that a wider, non-Asian audience was exposed to the genre. A 1974 article in the film journal Cineaste proclaimed:
In a little more than two years, kung fu (also known as Chinese boxing), the centuries-old Chinese martial art, has caught the fancy of the American public and literally become the ‘fist of fury.’
As the 2013 documentary The Black Kungfu Experience depicts, some African American fans of Kung Fu movies were inspired to actually train in Chinese and Japanese martial arts. Ron Van Clief, a Brooklyn native, became a martial arts champion after surviving a lynching down south in the early ‘60s, and serving in combat as a Marine in the Vietnam War. He was given the name “The Black Dragon” by none other than Bruce Lee, and eventually moved to Hong Kong to star in a plethora of Kung Fu movies. These movies, in turn, inspired a whole new generation of African American martial arts practitioners.
Van Clief was the fight choreographer for the 1985 Berry Gordy-produced film, The Last Dragon. The Last Dragon, which features a showdown between two black martial arts experts in Harlem, represented the confluence of Kung Fu cinema and New York street culture. Jim Jarmusch would build on the trope fifteen years later, in Ghost Dog, a movie scored by Wu Tang’s leader, RZA. Considering that The Wu-Tang Clan’s imagery draws so heavily from both Five Percenters and Kung Fu movies, it’s no surprise that their lyrics contain so many 52 Blocks references.
The influence of film does not mean that the ‘70s martial arts trend was solely about play acting; street gangs like the Black Spades, the Nomads, and the Ghetto Brothers were actively engaging in hand-to-hand combat. Examples of this can be found in the excellent recent documentary, Rubble Kings, which chronicles the events leading up to the 1971 Hoe Avenue gang truce in the South Bronx. The film features an influential figure named “Karate Charlie” Suarez. Suarez—a Marine-turned-gang leader-turned-activist-turned-martial arts instructor—literally made a name for himself as a karate practitioner, and inspired a myriad of imitators.

Many 52 Blocks proponents argue that the true inspiration for the form does not come from Asia, but from Africa. 52 Blocks scholar Daniel Marks, who first learned of the form from street savvy recruits while in the Army, refers in a brief monograph to the southern African American fighting style of “Knocking and Kicking.” Frazier similarly connects Jail House Rock back to a “Virginia Scufflin” boxing style practiced by slaves in the 1800s. The existence of enslaved bare knuckle boxers—like the famous Tom Molineaux—who were forced to fight for their masters’ entertainment, is documented in other sources, including the foundational early-1800s prize fighting account, Boxiana. Marks and Frazier both connect Southern African American fighting styles back to African martial arts, such as Hausa Boxing (also known as Dambe) in Nigeria.
Within the martial arts community, there are many detractors who question if the 52 Blocks even exists at all, let alone possesses a history stretching back centuries. Considering that martial arts is a field filled with both Orientalist frauds and blustering bravado, and that there is so little hard evidence on the history of the 52 Blocks, some measure of skepticism is certainly warranted. That being said, much of the derision for the 52 Blocks goes well beyond careful critical appraisal. A typical attack is articulated by the right-wing writer Phil Elmore:
the system simply doesn’t exist […] we are asked to believe that a people sold into slavery and shipped across the ocean to serve as slaves in the United States somehow managed to transmit the coherent body of a complex, technically diverse martial arts system to their children, their children’s children, and their children for generations, all under the watchful eye of slave owners who would not be eager to have their property learning to fight.
Elmore’s essentially racist argument not only dismisses the 52, but the very idea that African American culture builds on traditions brought over from Africa. Apparently the man has never heard of blues music, or any other African Diaspora art form. And if he doesn’t believe that martial organization could happen under “the watchful eye of slave owners,” then someone should tell him about Nat Turner.

The crack epidemic of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s brought an unprecedented level of violence to the streets of America’s cities. During this era, hand-to-hand street fighting gave way to gun violence. Those who posit that the 52 Blocks was a tradition passed down through generations point to this disruptive historical moment as the end of the form’s practical use and transmission. In the song “Cold World,” GZA raps about the inefficacy of the 52 Blocks in a burgeoning gun culture: “But with iron on the sides, thugs took no excuses/ Therefore, your fifty-two hand blocks was useless.”
As the 52 Blocks became a relic of the past—historical or mythic—some people began to preserve and honor it as part of African American heritage and culture. Constellation 52 Global, a group which includes Marks and Kawaun Adon Akhenoten7 (aka “Big K” of Street Kingdom fame), works to document and perpetuate the tradition. Marks writes that he values the 52 Blocks, “as a testament of our struggle as Black people in the Diaspora fighting for equality.”
The idea of the 52 Blocks has also gradually taken more of a presence in sports, entertainment, and popular culture. Some boxing fans speculate that in addition to Zab Judah, other boxers like Mike Tyson may have incorporated elements of the 52 into their fighting styles. This theory is rooted in the fact that Tyson received much of his fighting education in the streets of Brooklyn and in a New York State juvenile detention facility. After hearing tell of the form’s fabled efficacy, some martial arts students are seeking to learn the 52 Blocks in more formal settings. This phenomenon was mentioned in a 2009 New York Times article which, in addition to Marks and Akhenoten7, focused on Lyte Burly, a trainer who teaches a version of the 52 Blocks as a business. The Times article also discussed a meeting between Marks and UFC Champion Rashad Evans, and Evans’ interest in 52 Blocks techniques.
The 52 Blocks is finding its place on the screen as well, just as Kung Fu once did. Because of its speed and flash, the 52 Blocks is made for the medium. Indeed, many people now receive their first glimpse of the 52 in YouTube videos, just as I did. Strangely, the first mainstream use of 52 Blocks-style moves was by Mel Gibson in the 1987 film Lethal Weapon. The Australian learned his moves from Dennis Newsome. More recently, the 52 Blocks mythology plays a prominent role in the BET series Gun Hill. Larenz Tate’s character, Bird, is an ex-convict posing as a law enforcement officer, so his knowledge of the 52 is somewhat logical to the plot. Though Tate’s fighting technique—coordinated by Diallo Frazier—may very well be flash designed for TV, rather than an authentic reflection of a prison and street fighting tradition, its central use in the narrative demonstrates the continuing popular appeal of the legend of the 52 Blocks, two decades after the Wu-Tang era.
Despite the lights and cameras, the 52 Blocks remains, in its essence, an art form of bare hands, operating behind concrete and steel. Not too long ago, my girlfriend’s work took her to Harlem early in the morning, just after dawn. Passing through Marcus Garvey Park, she saw a lone man in his fifties—with the weathered look of an ex-con—training inside the playground jungle gym, down the hill from the old fire tower. His half-century-old arms flashed in front of his face, cutting through the morning air.
“Was that 52 Blocks?” she asked me when she got home. “It was like nothing else I’ve ever seen.”
