Nimona broke my heart and made me feel whole again. There’s just so much to love in this movie: the story, the animation, the voice actors (Hi Eugene ahhhhh), all of it delivered into this reimagined (anti)hero’s journey.

Also, I love how all the recent villains are all metaphors for white conservative religious ideologies - while I do miss the gay-coded Disney villains who completely steal the show, pointing out the real harm and giving people a language to conceptualize this is also *chef’s kiss* nice.

I’m not sure if this is intentional, but Ballister’s belief that if he just talks to Ambrosious, that he can explain everything, that he can show his innocence, that he can show Nimona isn’t a threat, is such a good allegory for what it’s like to try and speak to your family and friends when coming out (or even being an ally). Because speaking to Ambrosious didn’t change his mind. Both times. Because sometimes you just can’t explain to someone that you’re not all these bigoted things they think you are. And in the end we do see Ambrosious learn, showing it’s not impossible, but we also see characters never learn, like the director.

Sometimes you can’t talk people out of their bigotry, and it hurts because you love them.

my least favorite change from the book is how the movie made it so all the knights are descended from other knights and ballister is different because he was a street kid

in the comic the institution would kidnap orphans (like ambrosius) and force them to train. or people would sell their kids to the institution to pay off debts (which is what happened to ballister)
