Writing Blind and Visually Impaired Characters: Tropes

Hmm, I decided to work on part three before I got to part two. Forgive me.

Disclaimer: I am a visually impaired writer and blogger who has written two blind characters thus far. I have been living with vision loss for two years, have had my cane for almost as long, and every day I strive to learn all there is to know about writing and living my life blind.

Part Three: Tropes and Cliches to Avoid, and Other Things You Should Avoid

Blind Character Tropes You Need to Avoid

ALL blind characters wear sunglasses ALL the time. It’s actually not true, especially if that character has some remaining vision and they don’t wish to harder to see by using dark lenses. Sometimes a blind person will wear sunglasses, but you should consider the reason why. 

1) People who are painfully light sensitive (like me) will wear glasses when it’s a bright, sunny day.

2) People who are really into fashion and like to accessorize their outfit with sunglasses will totally do that. 

3) People who aren’t very light sensitive but want to protect their eyes from the sun will use sunglasses.

Notice that those last three apply to sighted people too, there are lots of sighted people who have a little sensitivity to the sun, or like accessorizing their beachy outfit or like protecting their eyes

Additional reasons for wearing sunglasses: sometimes you feel sighted strangers are not taking your blindness seriously enough when you ask for help, so you pull on your sunglasses and approach them a second time with your cane hoping they will take you seriously this time. (sighted people are dumb sometimes)

Disclaimer: I am the cliche, but that’s because I’m so painfully light sensitive I can’t walk outside without sunglasses. Light gives me massive migraines, including headlights, so yes, I am that person who wears sunglasses day and night. But does your character see like me? Do they need sunglasses the way I do?

Blind Child Prodegy. I see this most with musical instruments, especially piano. I’m sure lots of blind people learned an instrument, but I doubt they all became prodegies specifically because of their vision loss. If they are that good, then you probably need to explain all the hours of studious education and how they learned songs (do they have enough vision to read music?) It’s more that it’s a shallow and boring trope that’s the problem.

Daredevil. Your character might have some weird sensitivity issues, but it won’t make them blind ninjas. Sure, maybe your blind character can sense a specific smell out of all the others (I’m very sensitive to cleaning chemicals, they give me headaches) but it’s probably more of a problem than a gift. They may be more tuned into the sounds around them because they have to be, but they don’t hear a conversation happening a block away. Even with the most attuned senses, I don’t think anyone will ever be Daredevil. (Don’t get me wrong, I love the character, but he’s not who you should be writing. You’re not writing Daredevil. Daredevil already exists. Go write someone new.)

The Blind Psychic/Blind Witch: The most recent example I can think of is the new Sabrina show on Netflix with the blind friend losing her vision and then becoming psychic, as if that somehow makes it all better. If you’re going to have a blind character, they need to be blind. There’s no cheaty-cheat-cheats to make them see more than their blindness allows. If you really want your blind character to be psychic and have visions, then I suggest that the visions they have involve the same amount of sight they have in normal life. If they have tunnel vision in their real life, then their psychic visions appear with their usual tunnel vision.

Your blind characters don’t need a magical ability that negates their blindness. If they have it, then why did you make them blind? What was the point? Really ask yourself why you want to give them this ability. If it’s because they can’t do all the things you want to do without it, then should you really have made them blind in the first place? Could you potentially think of other ways for them to accomplish all these cool things?

Super Powered Seeing Eye Dog. This is something I’ve seen in a handful of fanfiction, where the seeing eye dog is somehow super smart and knows everything about their environment and is just super on point about their whole job. Just, not a normal dog. It’s not a good idea and you shouldn’t do it, even in fantasy genres. Your blind character’s guide dog should be a dog who was thoroughly trained by a guide dog foundation, and they should act like a regular dog when they don’t have their harness and are off-duty. Service dogs are still normal dogs when they’re off duty and still love play time with their humans and walks and naps.

The Cloudy, Distorted Eye Look- You’ve probably seen a few blind characters where their eyes are cloudy and weird looking. This trope is actually very inaccurate and a little harmful because it alters the way the general public sees blind people. Most people living with vision loss have fairly normal looking eyes. Some even have beautiful eyes. Unless the way your character went blind and their over all condition calls for their eyes to look messed up (chemical burn, severe cataracts, something like that) they will probably have normal looking eyes.

An exception to this is Nystagmus, which is a condition that causes a person’s eyes to continually shake. It’s pretty common in people with eye conditions and vision loss. To the outside perspective the character’s eyes might be shaking from side to side or shaking in circles. From the perspective of someone with this condition, it might be disorientating. Lights and images they see will shake because their eyes are shaking.

That’s one of the few conditions that might change the appearance of eyes without you falling into trope territory because it’s very common for people with vision loss to have it.

Specific Writing Cliches to Avoid

Or, in other words, cliches that will make your readers drop what they’re reading the second they see it (especially the blind ones who are dying for some good blind character representation) 

“Sam, will you tell me what color looks like.” I don’t actually know who Sam is, but someone asked someone to describe color. This cliche is just dead. It’s not a super meaningful moment between characters anymore. Maybe it was the first time, but now five thousand different people have done it with virtually the same dialogue, so not it’s just cliche. Think about it like this, you only have so much time in a story to allow your characters to connect to each other, and only so many words in a book to allow your readers to connect to the character. Don’t waste them on something like describing color. Let them have a meaningful moment that’s unique to them..

If you must know how to describe color to someone who’s blind, I did like the video where Molly Burke had Gabby Hanna describe color to her. Gabby Hanna did a very good job.

Still, it’s not a meaningful moment between characters anymore and doing it in your story will make people sigh heavily and walk away. (trust me, I’ve done it to many fanfictions involving blind characters)

“Can I feel your face?” NO! Please don’t ever do this. It’s so bad. It’s so cringey. It’s not real, blind people don’t do that. Some sighted person made that up in Hollywood and the blind community is permanently mad about it. Blind readers will drop your story the second they read that sentence. Don’t. Do. It.

“What do you look like?” This isn’t an absolute -never do it- but I wouldn’t recommend it. I honestly don’t know how you could use this sentence and not have it sound cringey somehow. There are ways to get around it though, and it depends on why your blind character wants to know. Love interest? Get your blind character’s best friend to tell them what the love interest looks like. Curious what your new friend looks like? Get your other friends or even parents who met them to describe the character.

“When I see Amy I see dark storm clouds over choppy waves, I hear lightning cracking and pouring rain, I feel fire and smell...” “When I think of Adam I think of warm sunlit meadows and the feeling of summer, I think of cloudless skies and quiet nights and...” I’m not sure I could do that any more. No, before you get mad, I’m not saying you can’t use this sort of writing style ever. I’m not telling you to cut out beautiful imagery that your characters associate with their loved ones, that’s not it at all. I’m saying this shouldn’t be the way your blind character describes every character they know. The reason this comes up is because in the ONE book I EVER found in stores involving a blind main character, she described all of her family members with imagery like that. And then brought her house pet to school as a fake seeing eye dog in the second chapter. I never read past that, no matter how hard I tried. It’s been years and I’m still super offended and I just get more and more offended by that book as I grow into my adult life and write my own books.

What you should do instead of that thing is show what kind of people your characters are through their actions and their dialogue. The example above is almost a tell instead of show example anyway, because you’re telling me Amy is like dark storm clouds before I get more than two sentences of dialogue from her and I’m not sure if I believe you about this meadow boy either.

I’m trying to remember other cliches that have bothered me before, but it’s eleven at night and I’ve been working on this guide for three or four hours now.

What to Avoid in General

Or, things I never want to see happen to blind characters

Your blind characters should not be bullied in their high school. While I wasn’t blind in high school, there were two girls who were blind at the school I attended for 7-9 grade. As far as I know, nobody gave them any trouble. My sister was actually friends with one of them when I left that school and went into homeschooling.

The bullying you see in TV high schools is not that accurate anyway. The current generation of students is seeing a decrease in bullying compared to older generations. While the bullying situation is not perfect, teenagers usually know better than to bully the blind child. (they will probably bully other children instead, children who aren’t neuro-typical or pretty or thin or white)

What I’m saying is I don’t want to see your blind character getting the shit kicked out of them for being blind. I want to see your character finding their community and enjoying their time with their friends.

Please don’t make your characters suicidal after going blind. Disability is a hard thing to live with. People do go through depression when adjusting to a new disability, and yes, some of them are suicidal because of that disability. But books and stories are a way of escaping, especially for someone who lives with that disability. They want to see someone like them who feels happy and loved, not read someone who’s on the verge of ending their life for half a book or more. 

It’s another one of those “why are you making your character blind?” Is it to make them suffer? Don’t do it. Blind people don’t exist to suffer, they exist to live their lives and hopefully be happy. Are they blind to make their life more dramatic? Blindness causes drama, yes, but that shouldn’t be your only source of plot. 

Please don’t let your blind character’s family treat them badly because they’re blind. Emphasis on the because. Children do grow up in abusive homes, but your character’s family shouldn’t become abusive because your character is blind. Having a character that grew up in an abusive household because they have shitty parents is fine, and if they just happen to be blind and their parents never change, fine, but to be honest?

You shouldn’t victimize your disabled characters. You shouldn’t mistreat them purely because you can.

Summary: A woman disappears. She shows up two days after her husband reports her missing, gives no explanation of what happened and takes her own life the next day. Is she the only victim? Is it really suicide? And what happened when she went missing? Bright and the team investigate the mystery, and Malcolm finds himself in danger yet again. Will he come out unscathed?

note: This chapter has mentions of suicide, nothing is explicitly described, but please be warned. Note: I am sorry in advance if any of my medical knowledge or drugs is unrealistic. I just had an idea and I am rolling with it.

Chapter Two: Edrisa Brings in a Case

It was a good day. He navigated the streets of New York City with ease. His footsteps were happy, bouncy even. And why wouldn’t they be? There is a Case Afterall!

And nothing makes him happier. It’s not like he enjoys murders.

No.

He just likes to catch killers, bring them to justice. He wants to protect his family and his community. He's told John Watkins that already. He also admits that it keeps his mind off things. Keeps things at bay. It's also a good challenge, a euphoric experience. Almost like ecstasy. That all he admits.

But what he fails to admit is that he feels it's his personal mission to atone for what Dr. Martin Whitly has done. The pain he has imposed on the world. The wounds he inflicted. Wounds that did not only affect the victims and their families but also his mother, his sister, and himself. Wounds that cannot heal. Wounds that continue to bleed twenty years later.

No.

He does not admit any of this. Because this thought redeems him, makes him a good person. Like some good Samaritan who saw the world was suffering and decided to help. But he knows he's none of that. "We are the same." He is not a good person. He's just to blame for what his father did. He is not any better. He is broken.

Yes.

He's serving his penance. Atoning for those sins, he somehow feels responsible for. And even though he can't seem to close the old wounds, he was at least sparing others the all-knowing pain. That’s why he loved his job at the FBI. This is why he loves working for the NYPD.

Today was a different case, though. It wasn't Gil who called him, like usual, but Edrisa. He could feel her excitement radiating from the text. Or rather a string of texts. Edrisa was the type of person to shoot 10 texts to get through one idea. Blurbs of text came to his phone as he was sipping his morning coffee.

Bright!!!

It’s about a case.

Really! It’s a good one!

He was out of the house as soon as he read the word case. Malcolm liked Edrisa. He could always be himself with her. She doesn’t judge him or give him creepy glances when he’s fascinated by murder. She's actually into the same things he likes. They share the same fascination for science and anatomy. He’s grateful for his team in the NYPD, more so now that he feels accepted by them. However, Edrisa was the first to accept him right away, and for that, he will always be grateful. After years of being considered a freak, bullied, harassed, and looked down upon, bright couldn't shake the amount of relief he felt about being so fully accepted and so fast. Even when she knew who he was, what his father was.

He reached her office, and through the glass window, he saw her frantically typing on her computer. Her eyebrows were creased, and she was deep into whatever was on the screen that she startled when he opened the door.

"Bright!" she exclaimed, "what took you so long! Come…come in quickly."

She was hopping on her legs, and in her hurried pace, she managed to hit her funny bony. "Aow Aow Awo,” she repeated and muttered, “why does it always hurt that much.”

Malcolm smiled. It was a quiet and rueful smile, the only smile he ever gives. She doesn't remember ever seeing him truly smile.

“ Hello Edrisa,” he looked at his watch, “I had to walk here. Your texts said you have a case?”

“ Yes, yes, YES," she said with a pointed finger up in the air while navigating back to her desk, and he followed to sit at the chair there. "Okay, so it's not really a case per se,” she said and saw his shoulders drop. “Wait, I mean it is, I really think it is. But when I spoke to Gil, he did not see it.”

He frowned, "Why would, Gil ..."

“haah! Because the victim wasn’t killed.”

His frown deepened, but it wasn't an impatient frown. It was leaning more towards perplexed, thoughtful, and definitely not judgmental. She looked at him for a second.

"No, no, no. Let me explain. Let’s start from the beginning, shall we?” she pushed the rims of her glasses to her nose and started.

"So yesterday was a normal day. All cool. Daily work, nothing out of the ordinary, really. I was working with a poor Jane doe but then. Oh, by the way, did you know that when the lungs are submerged in water for so long, they kind of… oh, Sorry, sorry, of course, you do! Where was I? I got carried away,” she smiled sheepishly. Malcolm smiled back. He knows how Edrisa gets carried away, he does so himself more often than ever, so he's not one to judge. On regular days they can both start talking and jumping from topic to topic that by the end of the conversation, they would have discussed ten different things and forgot what the initial topic was even about. Today was different though, this was not an idle chat. They were discussing a case, and so he curbed his itch to ask about Jane Doe and silently let her continue her narrative.

“Back to our story,” she continued, “ So, I get a call from a colleague of mine, Dr. Mathew Brown, he was working with a victim…um, a Mrs. Lori Stewart. Poor soul took her own life. Husband found her in the bathtub, having slit both her wrists." She hung her head low for a few seconds in dismay, and her voice was less enthusiastic, more apologetic, "She left behind a two-year-old. The husband was devastated."

He lowered his head in turn. One would assume that after so much death surrounding them, that it will get easier. It never does.

“So, Mathew, he um... wanted my opinion on her. He thinks it might not be as simple as it looks.”

In reply to his arched eyebrows, she continued, " Lori went missing a couple of days before the accident. Her husband filed a missing person's report forty-eight hours after she disappeared. He insisted that something terrible must have happened to her because Lori rarely left the house. Never without letting him know. Never without lily, their daughter. He was frantic, according to the reports here,” she moved the monitor on her desk a bit to show Bright the police report.

“However, she turned up two days later, completely unscathed, gave no explanation to where she was. Said she just wanted time off. So, the investigation was closed.”

Malcolm’s hand moved to his face stroking his chin. Edrisa knew he was processing the information, thinking of the hidden angles, something he always does, so she let him be.

“She was not restrained?” his head jerked towards her.

"No. There were no marks anywhere to indicate she has been restrained or held captive. Her clothes were in pristine condition. In all outward appearances, she looked fine. The police ran the S.A.K, and the results came back negative. Apart from her apparent silence, there was really nothing to do.”

Malcolm eyed her, and his lips curled playfully, " but that's not all. Right Edrisa? Tell me what is missing. What did you find out!”

She smiled, not at all flustered by his sassiness. He was not the best profiler she knows for nothing.

“That’s what Mathew contacted me about. He found a very carefully hidden needle entry point. She has been dosed with something. So, when checking her tox screen, he found some anomalies. Lori had a history with depression, recently she suffered from postpartum depression and was still on mood stabilizers, among many others. The bloodwork that was taken back when she came home, and that after her death gave perplexing results. Supposedly, she left her medicine at home, so her blood shouldn’t have any traces of the drugs. Yet the levels in the report indicate that there were drugs in her system. The person-in-charge back at the time did not notice. The total concentration was within limits and in line with what's expected, given her medication list. However, if you look closely at the chemical's concentrations, you can see some of the peaks belong to model drugs that mimic the behavior of a conventional drug. It is very easy to miss if you are not looking for it."

“So, she was given another cocktail of drugs in different concentrations such that the overall concentration was within the limits? That way if you are not directly looking for it, you might miss it. Fascinating! Any idea what could those drugs induce?”

She shook her head, “Unfortunately, by this time, the drugs were flushed out of her system and also mixed in with her normal pills so further tests could not run accurately. She was missing for four days, two before Mr. Stewart was able to file a report. According to Mathew, if she was dosed, she must have been dosed on the first day. That's roughly six days ago, so it is not easy. But we know an excellent forensic chemist. We sent her the sample. Amy Garcia will figure it out, she’s the best!”

Malcolm gnawed at his lips. Something was missing. The case sure was a mystery, but he has nothing to work with for a profile. No pattern. Just a suspected foul play that might have led a poor woman to lose her life. Nothing concrete. He understood why Gil did not see a case yet.

“Edrisa,” he started but was interrupted.

"Okay, now you know the specifics. umm, you also know that I um kind of follow lots of real crime blogs?" her voice continued to drop as if she was ashamed of her hobby and expected the usual judgemental looks she normally received. He said nothing, just looked at her expectantly, and waited.

“ Lori Stewart was not the only case. In fact, this is the third case this month alone!”

That’s it. she hit the jackpot.

He shifted in his chair and looked back up at her, his blue eyes shining with radiant excitement.

She liked how excited he usually gets, and a deep sense of pride invaded her. She had to admit he had pretty eyes. The type anyone can get lost into. And they got all the much prettier when they gleamed this way. Edrisa liked Bright. No. Not in that sort anyway. Malcolm bright was not her crush, despite how she always makes it seem. He is a friend. If anything, she just loves his brain and is fascinated by it. However, that does not mean she can't appreciate art, and his eyes were art.

“The reason why the two cases passed under the police’s radar was that the victims were not reported missing. Here..” she passed him a file with two names and some information.

“A college Freshman, Alex Sanders, and Patricia Young, she is an artist. Here is all the information that I found. I will also let you know when Amy gets back to me about the drug."

“Thank YOU, Edrisa," he said with excitement while hopping off his chair. He steadied his clothes, "I will start on a profile right away. But I will need more information."

She smiled playfully, “You could probably ask Detective Powel. I am sure she will be happy to help.”

He did not seem to hear her because he offered no comment, but she could see his cheeks flush a little. He waved her goodbye and rushed out.

Edrisa eased in her chair. She already felt better. Whoever was behind the death of those people, and behind orphaning a two-year-old will not get away with this.

Edrisa tensed while she sat in that metal armchair. She was terrified beyond measure. Her wrists were tied to the arms of the chair using duct tape. Her ankles were tied together as well. She felt a searing pain in her limbs like fire every time she struggled against them. Edrisa knew that they won’t give away, they were wrapped at least five times, but that did not stop her. She could feel her heartbeat in her ears, and she was struggling to breathe. The duct tape gagging her made matters even worse.

She sat in that chair like some damsel in distress, she couldn't even lift her glasses up when they kept slipping off the bridge of her nose. Not like she loved what she saw, but she has to be able to see.  A wave of helplessness crushed her even more, her heartbeat beat even faster. I am a damsel in distress, and by the looks of it, I am not going to be leaving this place alive.

She could not have imagined that she would ever be in such a position. Sure, she had a gun pointed at her once before, and she did not imagine that as well.

No, but no, this was different. This was hopeless. This was futile.

She looked at Bright, a few feet away, and her eyes welled with tears again. She was astonished that tears kept coming. They kept pouring down her face unchecked, and she let them. This was all her fault; she should never have gotten involved in that case. She should never have sent bright those texts.

Dragonball(Z) - I’ve been writing in DBZ since... oh geez, the late 90′s? I think the first fic I ever posted was DBZ and it was around that time. I didn’t start rping it until like, early 00′s though.

Final Fantasy - I actually dabbled in 9 a little bit around the time it came out in ‘00 (my friend had it!) but I wouldn’t say I really did much until I really got into 7, and that was around... geez, ‘05? I rped it a little with a friend around then but I didn’t really start writing it much until nearly ‘10. #latetotheparty Yet I do consider it my “home” fandom - I always come back to it.

Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons - early ‘00s! My first HM/SoS game was Friends of Mineral Town on my trusty GBA and I love it so much to this day. SO excited for the remake!

Legend of Zelda - I really, really loved Ocarina of Time from the get-go when I got it on the N64 in ‘98 (I got it again for the GameCube and the 3DS and would totally buy it for the Switch, just sayin.) Majora’s Mask creeped me out a bit and was stressful but I liked it, too. And then of course later titles like Twilight Princess were just... -chef’s kiss- but I didn’t really dig into the fandom until ‘10-’11 when I started rping Link with a friend and briefly tried joining a forum rp group (shoutout to ZRPG!) with an OC

Marvel Cinematic Universe - I want to say around ‘12, when Avengers came out? Like, I’d seen Iron Man but I didn’t really dig into it until then.

Pokémon - late 90′s / early 00′s because I first started my Pkmn journey playing Gold and Crystal. While I didn’t write fanfic or rp it, I definitely had headcanons and a lot of feels.

Sailor Moon - early 90′s! I first watched the anime as it came out, though I’ve since forgotten most of that and only have the manga/crystal in my head to run interpretations off of. It was so pretty tho.

Stardew Valley - a newer fandom for me, I really only started getting “into” it about a year ago, but man... I love it, I really do

Star Wars - despite early access to the OT as a kidlet, I didn’t actually get “into” Star Wars until the Prequels in ‘99 (fite me) when I fell in love with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan and promptly, voraciously, dove into fixit and timetravel fanfic. By the time KOTOR came out in ‘03 I was hooked.

Threads of Fate - I think I got into this one on the ground floor, so to speak. My friend had just gotten it and I borrowed it from her and my brother’s PS1 in ‘00 and that was it, I was in love.

Dragonball Z

Vegeta - oh man, actually one of the first characters I ever rp’d or wrote in fic, and that’s saying something. I picked him because I love him. He’s an absolute ass, but he grows so much throughout Z. (I have yet to see Super, hoping to one day remedy that but we’ll see!) I guess I picked him up for nostalgia’s sake? I really love the character and think there’s a lot of growth yet to see buried under that pride and ego. If you can unearth it.

Final Fantasy

Angeal Hewley (FF7) - actually my first muse on Tumblr, back in... oh, 2013? The blog has been deleted, but he was the first muse I ever played seriously out of FF7. There’s parts of Angeal that really resonate with me, enough that - when I was a less experienced writer - I got tangled up in him a bit too much, made him a bit too personal, and I realized I had to take a step back from writing him. But I love Angeal, and after some time had passed, having written him in various fics, I’ve felt confident adding him... even if I haven’t done anything with him here yet.

Cait Sith (FF7) - I know a lot of people see Cait Sith as all sorts of negative things, but frankly I adore the little guy. And I guess I took him on partially because I couldn’t take Reeve on and not take Cait on, but partially because I see so much in him that could be interesting to explore and would really, really love to. (Any Reeve’s or AVALANCHE - or Turks! - come at me!)

Chaos (FF7) - I picked Chaos up on a whim, as far as Tumblr goes. I really enjoy rping him/Vincent off Tumblr and writing him in fics, and I suppose I just wanted to present a different side of him than I usually see. I’ve even had a thread that has a great deal of promise so I think it was worth it.

Genesis Rhapsodos (FF7) - my third FF7 blog, I think? It’s still up, though obviously not in use, just because I’d put so much work into it. I really adore Genesis, and love writing him. I love his sass and flare, but I love that he’s deeper than all the fire and flamboyance, if you’re willing to look past that. I’m lucky that I’ve had some lovely partners to explore him with, though I’d still kill for an Angeal to throw him at. XD Or a Sephiroth, for that matter.

Lazard Deusericus (FF7) - Lazard, my second FF7 blog and an unexpected love. I picked him up because I had recently started writing him in earnest with an off-Tumblr rp partner ( @thegeeksqueaks ) and was really enjoying him, and hadn’t seen him on Tumblr yet so thought I might get more partners that way. (It turned out there were a couple but they were inactive.) His first blog was accidentally deleted - over five years worth of character development and relationships - so after briefly working him up again solo I brought him over here. He’s not getting the same level of attention but it’s worth it not to be juggling blogs.

Reeve Tuesti (FF7) - pre-Remake, most of the Reeve rpers had gone inactive (shoutout to the fabulous @engineering-robotics and @animus-inspire for coming back!) and just... I love the character too much not to see him in the RPC. Of course, I love to write him period myself so I’d love more threads there but regardless he’s so much fun.

Tristan Pierce (FF7 OC) - Triiiiiiiiiis. Tristan was actually born as an NPC off of Lazard’s blog, who took a life on his own because he was just... so full of life. He actually had his own blog, too! I’ve barely done anything with him here, but I still keep him just because he gives me feels and he’s just neat. (He does still appear in the background of Lazard’s threads though.)

Iris (SoS) - I actually picked up Iris as a muse first for a fantastic HM/SoS/SDV/etc rp group I’m in a couple years ago, and liked playing her so much I thought I’d bring her here. Elegant lady novelist? Yes please.

Neil (ANB) - unlike Iris and Trent, I haven’t written Neil anywhere else, but he’s my love from A New Beginning and just... he seems like he’d be fun to write? I’d love to flesh him out.

Doctor/Trent (FoMT/MFoMT; DS/CUTE) - Trent, like Iris, is one I write for the rp group and I legit picked him up because of the opportunity for h/c I am not sorry. But seriously though, he’s grown on me so much and I love my awkward doctor.

Legend of Zelda

Midna (Twilight Princess) - TP is one of my absolute favorite Zelda games, and Midna a favorite character. There’s just so much to her you don’t get to see that I was really hoping to get to dig into, still hope one day to. We’ll see. Worth keeping on roster.

Revali (Breath of the Wild) - my newest addition! I keep saying in complete seriousness “Genesis with more feathers” but seriously, I may have a type? I love him so much and wanted to see more of him, and by god if I have to do it myself so be it. (I have been playing a ton of BOTW lately which probably has a lot to do with it. XD)

Sheik (Ocarina of Time) - I love them so much. OoT didn’t have a ton of character building, but the sheer implications of the character speaks volumes that I want to explore. I’m lucky enough to be getting the chance to, too.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

Tony Stark - did I mention I have a type? I feel he makes a good argument for it. I originally picked Tony up because I just fell head over heels for the character in the first couple Iron Man movies + Avengers. I... am less in love with him in the later movies, not gonna lie, and am so far behind on lore that I’m considering dropping him. But yeah, originally picked him up just because he had so much potential. Thx Disney, great job there.

Pokémon (gameverse)

Lily Hart (HG/SS OC) - another OC of mine, this time for a fandom that... I only really know through the games, as opposed to manga/anime. I picked her up because I really liked the idea of doing events or little ask things with her, and still may try to initiate some more of those. We’ll see?

Sailor Moon (manga/Crystal)

Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury - I actually picked Ami up because of a plot with @magicalxgirlsxrp where we were splitting up the Inners and the Shitennou for some mega threads. XD But yeah, I do like her. Even if she’s a challenge to write sometimes because she’s very much not like me, and very much smarter.

Kunzite - Kunzite I have always loved, always, and I’ve had him on here because I really wanted to explore him more. I love him even more after the teasing in Crystal of what might have been, be still my shippy heart.

Mamoru Chiba/Endymion/Tuxedo Mask - super fond of Mamoru, too; I didn’t care for him so much in the 90′s anime, but in the manga and Crystal I really became more fond. I do a few things differently, I think, but don’t we all? I picked him up for that very reason, in fact.

Minako Aino/Sailor Venus - Minako is really interesting to me because there’s so much more to her than her airheaded, bubbly persona that fits her like a glove... but is just as superficial. I mean, she’s sunny and happy but she’s also the OG Senshi, the leader of the Inners, a powerful, commanding fighter - she’s complex, and I really wanted to explore that + getting to have fun with her bubbliness.

Nephrite - another picked up from @magicalxgirlsxrp‘s enabling. But I do find him really interesting so it works out well. Haven’t done a lot with him, but we have plans. Plans I’m looking forward to.

Stardew Valley

M. Rasmodius - I knew I really wanted to do something with SDV, once I got to playing it, but I wasn’t sure who. I thought about Sebastian and Elliot, but already had interacted with a couple who were just fantastic. So instead, I did a good fallback of mine - because I never, ever get tired of playing mages. Ever. XD

HK-47 (KOTOR) - the attitude. I wanted to write HK entirely because of the scorching levels of sass from this droid.

Liana Raine (SWTOR f!JC) - the Jedi Consular storyline is one of my favorites out of all of SWTOR (tied with the Inquisitor, but I’m revamping her) and I really just wanted to keep playing with it even once I’d done the dedicated storyline.

Revan (KOTOR LS!F) - give me female Revan you cowards. -ahem- I have feels about Revan, okay? I love her so, so much - she even had her own blog, I love her that much. I would absolutely love to do something more with her but I will hold on to her if for no other reason than to make sure at least one black, female Revan exists in the world. (I want all the timetravel and crossover threads, hit me up.)

Tharan Cedrax (SWTOR) - another for attitude, really, and also definitely my type. XD He’s charming, he’s snarky, he’s sassy, he’s brilliant... I very much like Tharan and really felt he, like most of the companions, deserved more screentime. So, I’m here to give it to him.

Threads of Fate (Dewprism)

Duke - he’s so cool. I mean, he’s a dork, but his powers are amazing and he’s just a fun, incredibly upbeat character to play. And well, anything to spread my love of that teeny fandom.

Fancy Mel - Mel hits all the sweet spots for a mage character. She’s got flavor, she’s got amazing powers, and she had room to create a fantastic backstory with amazing crossover potential. Is she a bit OP? Yes. But she has no intention of using it for anything but her amusement/whimsy.

Rod the Bladestar - I love Rod. I love his oddly genteel manners, I love how he’s unwittingly sexist but quickly cleans up his act when put straight, I love how driven and passionate he is. Could do without such a typically-Square-outfit, but you can’t have everything. (In the right artists’ hands, he might even be pretty amazing, actually.)

Journalling 01

I've decided to journal more about my spiritual practices here.  Part of what I believe in is collectivization and community, and the strength of the word and the collective unconscious, and I finally feel comfortable enough to start keeping my book of shadows in digital space.  Which is holy space, for me.  So you can expect more sharing about rituals and other practices in the future.  I will probably use the "witchcraft" tag pretty liberally.

I grew up in a pagan household with a legacy of sorcerry and a unique set of practices, but on becoming an adult I really developed a fairly secular existence.  This has changed in the last two years.  I've grown into pop culture paganism and chaos magick.  In addition to what I do alone, I have two groups I practice with.  The first is a Sacred Circle Dance group, which focuses on folk dances and raising energy and turning the wheel of the year.  Looking at the altar you can tell the woman who runs it, Amy, is some sort of witch or witch-inspired type, but otherwise it runs just like any dance group.

The other group I practice with is a monthly New Moon Circle.  I think I've been going for almost a year now.  We get together and do magic.  The rituals come from an ecclectic variety of traditions, with a lot of conventional wicca and chaos magic in the structure.  It's very open.  In December I did an initiation with that group, the Headless Rite, and since then I've been reading a lot and thinking a lot about what I believe.

More background in future posts.  For now I just want to journal about the ritual tonight.  We did a ritual to the Goddess Fortuna.  Jess, the leader of the group, quoted (I believe) Aleister Crowley's defintion of wealth as "one's preferred life."  She taught us a new form of meditation based on Dr. William Bengston's work with energy cures.  First we made a list of 8+ things we wanted: purely selfish desires for things we don't yet have.  Then we imagined 8+ corresponding images for these things.  Then we rapidly cycled through the images, visualizing to the beat of a drum.

Some of the things I wanted... it was hard to think of things I seriously wanted.  I put "thin, fit body," even though I am fairly happy with my body.  I put "extra room for a library," even though I'm happy with my home and don't want to move.  But it's like spagetti.  Throw everything at the wall and see what sticks.  I put immortality, eternal youth, fruit (specifically, grapes, which I'm craving), 1 million dollars, the ability to speak eloquently, and a few more personal things.  

When we were doing the meditation during the ritual, I kept seeing other things.  Things that weren't on my list, but things I wanted.  For instance I saw myself leading my own ritual.  I'd like to do that someday.  It seems like a lot of work.  Jess has written some incredible, poetic stuff that she uses in her rituals.  The quarter calls are lovely; she calls each element, evoking imagery of all sorts of things.  Deep wells and wise salmon and playful otters (for water.)  I read the Air invocation tonight, and the Air dismissal.  I usually read water but I'm feeling some connection with Air.

Another thing she says at the end I really love is something like, "as smoke after the flame, this sacred space lingers on in us."  Beautiful.  And in the beginning when she calls the circle to order, it starts something like "by the deep roots..."

The dream-journaling I've been doing on this blog has been something I've been using for my spiritual path.  I believe in the power of dreams as pregonition, clairvoyance, astral projection, and telepathy.  Most of all I believe that dreams are the way the subconscious processes new information.  Last night I dreamt that I was giving a volume of Nietzsche to one of my professors from university, which probably means I should add some more Nietzsche to my to-read list.  I've forgotten everything I read of his anyway.  I also dreamt I was in a space ship that was exploding and crashing to a planet.  The top had come off the ship and all the air was rushing out.  Another connection to air, oddly enough.  What does air symbollize, as an element?  I know it's considered masculine and it has something to do with intelligence.  Hang on I'm looking up what else...

updates: the hellmouth, am I too generous, and more

It’s “where are you now?” month at Ask a Manager, and all December I’m running updates from people who had their letters here answered in the past. Here are three updates from past letter-writers.

1. My new job is a nightmare built on a hellmouth

As I write this update, a faulty fire panel in our filing room (far from my desk) is sounding an office-wide alarm, and I am tasked with shutting it off while doing… well, work. It’s too loud to just let it go, but manually silencing it only yields one minute and thirty seconds of silence before it starts up again, so getting any work done is… challenging. Additionally, there is currently a wasp “situation” in the office, I had to decline going alone into the woods next to the property with an irate resident with a Unibomber vibe who wanted to show me the specific individual squirrel that he claims was harassing him two years ago and has returned in order to vandalize his new vehicle, and I have also just discovered that my increasingly unhinged manager has placed a two way microphone in my office by my desk. Yes, it’s another glorious day on the Hellmouth.

I know that sounds kind of bleak, and I was going to wait until I had a happier “New job, yay! And my last day is Friday!”-type update before writing, but I really didn’t want to let the holidays pass without taking the opportunity to say thank you. Because, seriously, as bad as the above sounds (and yes, that is all from just today), I would not be coping as well as I am if it weren’t for you and the ever helpful commentariat. I know it’s dumb, but having strangers on the internet be kind to me and offer me great advice, supportive statements, and also somehow reference all of my favorite TV shows really helped. Just hearing from an outside source that I wasn’t crazy and it was okay to make moves to get out of this job filled me with so much relief—it really helped me feel less like a trapped animal and more like a human with choices. Which has been priceless.

For those commenters who said that my manager was not my friend, and that it also sounded like some really poor management was going down at my property, I’m sorry to report that you were all very, very right. My manager, it turns out, lies constantly. To everyone. About everything. She also refuses to address staff issues, has been trying to force us to spy on each other (and, since we’re not doing that, has moved on to motion activated cameras and secret microphones), and has been consistently ordering me to do or say certain things to coworkers or residents and then hanging me out to dry after I follow her instructions. I’ve never felt so unsupported in a job. Or like I’ve taken so many crazy pills. And that’s on top of a lot of other just… BAD management choices. For example, I learned that a temporary maintenance worker that she wants to hire on permanently has been watching hardcore pornographic videos on his phone with the volume turned WAY up while at work. Before I could tell my manager, she told me and my other female coworker that one of us would have to give him a ride (alone) to the office Christmas party. I pulled her aside to fill her in and explain that neither of us would be super comfortable giving him a ride in light of that information, and she became very angry… with everyone except the porn watching dude. Who she still seems to be planning to hire on permanently. Not a good scene.

However, I’ve been applying to new (non-property management) jobs and am starting to at least see some movement, even if I haven’t unlocked the Shiny New Job Achievement yet. I had a really great phone interview last week for an entry level HR position and am also playing phone tag with the local university regarding an admin position, so I’m hopeful that I won’t be on the Hellmouth forever. I’ve also been practicing giving my boss notice, so when that happy day comes I’ll be ready to roll.

2. Am I too generous with my employees?

I’ve stopped the “perks” given out to employees.

The proverbial straw on the camel’s back was an incident involving “Sarah”, who was going through a health issue but had used up all of her available leave. I gave her additional two weeks of paid sick leave and told her she was free to use it however she wanted, as long as she let me know a week in advance, so I could come and cover for her shifts. While she was outwardly grateful I discovered afterwards she complained about me behind my back. She’d been telling people I deliberately took the store’s busy days so I could earn more commission for myself, and cheat her out of hers. This thought had never occurred to me and it was such an unfair accusation I went home and cried.

I’ve decided the best I can do for my employees is to pay them fair wages and create a healthy work environment. Despite my good intentions, employees just don’t care about me or the business I worked so hard to establish. I guess it’s only natural for humans to think of themselves and do only what is in their own best interests. I’m sick of being nice to people then have the same individuals back stab me or complain about me unfairly. It’s not worth the stress.

I know there will always be HR problems wherever I go. But at least if I haven’t gone out of my way to look after them it wouldn’t sting as much when people cause trouble. It doesn’t mean I’m going to be a horrible boss and cheat people – I’m just not going to be so personally involved in caring for employees anymore. I would rather donate my time and resources into assisting people I don’t work with.

3. How to tell an assistant “don’t tell me the process — just fix it!”

I had written in previously about my admin (Amy), who had a couple of quirks that were impacting job performance. First off, a big thank you to the community here. Alison’s advice was spot on, and the comments helped frame my thinking about the conversation. As a reminder, I work for the government, and none of these are fire-able offenses for us.

How it went: First, I spoke with my manager about the situation, since she’s the admin’s direct supervisor. She had been having the same issues and was open to suggestions. We spoke to the admin about the issues. Being straightforward in the moment has significantly helped with these issues. Of course, now there are new ones.

1) Don’t go into a ton of detail, just fix the problem. Amy is much better at this now. Some of it came with the newness to the situation and now knowing how we work, who to contact, etc. it is SO MUCH BETTER. This has greatly improved her job performance.

2) Loudness. I think this is a hearing issue. I address it in the moment, but it never lasts. Instead, I close my door more often.

3) Scheduling meetings. I addressed it directly a few times when it happened, and it has gotten better with time. She seems much less stressed by this aspect of the job.

4) Asking us stuff we wouldn’t know – again, got better with time and being direct.

New and different problems:

a) Amy gets bent out of shape by things that seem like routine things to be an executive assistant (ex: interrupting meetings when they go long so I keep on schedule; helping me screen calls from telemarketers and certain staff; arranging meetings in a certain order whenever possible to keep our schedules on track). I’ve addressed these in the moment by matter-of-factly going through a bit of the back story and that it is part of her job.

b) Amy may be a hoarder of office supplies. The government changed our office supply process, and it now can take up to 30 days to get a box of paper. This is a bigger statewide problem out of my control. For reference, we go through about a box of paper a month. Amy has begun hoarding office supplies and significantly over-ordering each time (ex: 10 boxes of paper every few months). It took some time for my boss and I to realize what was going on and addressed it Monday when it came to light and we received another 15 boxes, when we had 10 already. We’ll see. She obviously isn’t a neat freak or very tidy, which wouldn’t matter except that her office area is the reception area for the suite. So she’s working on that one.

c) She is someone who uses the same rather abrasive tone for every single conversation. Once I realized that, I was able to address all of the issues more directly, since I kept reading things into her tone.

Overall, I’m addressing things directly when they happen and usually they get fixed. If not, I address it the next time again. Her problem solving skill level and ability to multi-task is very low (which was a surprise to me), so I’ve also come to realize that I shouldn’t expect that of her. Changing my mindset on that really has helped lower my frustration level with her, and instead give her tasks where she can succeed, or instead listing out the To Do list in an email.

Good news is that she is very dependable, never sick, always on time, open to feedback, and is building an internal network in our organization, which is fantastic. She organized and facilitated our management off-site, which she had never done before, and it was great.

Looking back – this is a mediocre hire, who was previously micro-managed, and we didn’t lay out clear expectations early on or address things directly immediately. A big lessons learned on that one.
