Was just struck by the overwhelming urge to rate Stormlight characters on their driving ability. I have no evidence I'm going off of vibes alone. Here they are in no particular order:
Dalinar- I think he's generally a fine driver now, though still prone to bouts of road rage when someone won't let him merge. Very bad driver in his youth. 5/10
Jasnah- I think she would be a shockingly bad driver. She seems like the kind of person that believes the rules of the road apply to everyone other than her. The type to run a red light because the meeting she's going to is important. Never uses her turn signals because if shes in the left lane it should be obvious shes making a left turn. Despite her lack of care she always arrives safely and without a ticket, somehow. Would fit right in in Northern Virginia. Also the worst backseat driver ever. 3/10
Sadeas- Good driver but employs bad practices. When traffic is heavy he uses the shoulder of the road as his own personal lane. Only person capable of surviving New York traffic. 6/10
Kaladin- Fantastic driver but kind of slow. Won't make a left turn unless there is literally no other car on the road. Always follows the speed limit and uses his turn indicators. Also the type to yell at everyone to shut the fuck up and let him drive when he's in heavy traffic. 8/10
Syl- Cannot be allowed to drive under any circumstances. Bridge 4 let her drive once and she backed the car into a mailbox. 0/10
Shallan- Shes a bad driver but better than Jasnah. Her following distance is atrocious and she frequently rear ends people, but she does at least try to follow the rules of the road. 4/10
Veil- Worse than Shallan but says she's better. Will take a turn at 60 to try and make the car drift. 2/10
Radiant- Fantastic driver who follows the ruled perfectly. Not great at responding to unexpected situations though. 8/10
Venli- Drives like a psychopath. Weaves in and out of lanes to get there 30 seconds faster. If traffic is bad she will dead ass make a U turn in the middle of the road over a double yellow to leave. 1/10
Rock- Great driver, but hates driving. Not much more to say. 8/10
Sigzil- Best driver in bridge 4, only slightly held back by the fact that he knows every obscure rule and expects everyone else driving does also. 9/10
Moash- Believes the rules of the road are stupid and there to hold him back. The kind of guy who will not let you merge in front of him like his life depends on it. Would go 100 in a school zone for fun. 2/10
The Lopen- The guy that tells you he's a great driver but starts playing pokemon go while behind the wheel because he can absolutely do both. 4/10
Szeth- Mediocre driver prone to shocking episodes of road rage. The kind of guy who would slam the brakes to make the car behind him rear end him out of spite if they were following too close. 5/10
Navani- Fantastic driver. Always has the newest lane correcting tech and such installed on her vehicle. 10/10
Adolin- Cannot stay focused on the road. Type of guy who will look over his shoulder for like 15 seconds to carry on a conversation until Shallan yells at him to look at the road. Horrible speeder. Usually manages to avoid crashing though. 3/10
Wit- Shockingly competent driver. I mean he had all that experience with Wax, so... 10/10
Gavilar- The kind of douche who lifts his truck and has his mufflers removed so he can rev his obnoxious engine whole going through neighborhoods. 1/10
Renarin- He's a good driver in small towns and on winding, narrow country roads, but cannot handle big city traffic. Luckily he knows and readily admits this. 7/10
BONUS:
Rlain- I feel like he's just a typical good driver. Follows the rules as best he can, goes a few miles over the speed limit on the freeway, but nothing crazy. 8/10
Kelsier- It's a miracle he's survived this long with the way he drives. He would make a left on red without hesitation. Vin screamed the first time she rode with him. 1/10

I spend like. 0 time thinking about Elhokar (and Aesudan) compared to like literally any other Kholin? Like as a Dalinar scholar. I think about Dalinar’s immediate relatives a lot (Gavilar, Adolin, Renarin, Dalinar’s Unnamed Parents), and I think about Dalinar’s canonical love interests a lot (Evi, Navani), I think about Jasnah a lot because she and Dalinar are close, I think about Gavinor a lot because Dalinar being a grandpa is so goddamn weird, but Elhokar is just sort of. There. He was a failking and now he’s dead. The end

Stormlight character favourite movies and why (In my opinion)
Kaladin- Forrest Gump
It's just wholesome and Kaladin respects that, a story of triumph and inspiration that Kaladin can really enjoy, consistent rewatch for him and Syl quotes it constantly to make Kaladin feel happy when he's sad.
Adolin- John Wick
It's fun action and Adolin LIVES for it just because its so fucking cool and he appreciates good fight choreography. He literally just thinks every part of it is so cool and will always rewatch every film in the series regularly.
Watched it with Shallan but she sobbed uncontrollably when the dog died.
Shallan- Tangled
Absolutely adores the characters because she just sees it as her and Adolin through and through and physically attached and related herself to rapunzel so much she lightweaved her hair blonde and insanely long. Cries multiple times every rewatch.
Plus she just loves the music and all the wholesome aspects. Listens to the soundtrack all the time.
Dalinar- Apocalypse Now
Relates to the meaning of the movie so much he genuinely doesnt believe how the film can exist he adores it even though it does remind him of the darkest time of his life which he resents about himself he accepts that it happened and really appreciates that someone else managed to capture that feeling in a movie. The idea that his actions during war and the evil he did is a thing other people understand and experience helps him a lot.
Jasnah- Lady Bird
Jasnah is very analytical of films and always watches them from a writers perspective and this is a particular favourite for her for just how well and emotionally nuanced the characters are. She sees Lady Bird as very young and naive but also relates a lot to her emotions and pursuing happiness and a reason to be happy in a miserable world that seems against her, the dynamic between Lady Bird and her mother also had an impact on Jasnah as the theme of motherhood and conflict between a mother and daughter is just gripping to her.
Navani- Little Women
Navani absolutely LIVES for seeing women pursue happiness and live their own lives and make the choices that make them happy, the film absolutely embodies strong femininity and Navani adores it every time she watches it. Dalinar enjoys it too but very reluctant to admit it.
Szeth- My Neighbour Totoro
Szeth may come off as a cold blooded, emotionless killer but deep down hes so sweet and caring and this film in particular hit a sweet spot. The setting reminds him of Shinovar and he just loves really soft wholesome stories to distract him from all the death and horror and wanting to kill himself.
Renarin- Dead Poet's Society or Luca
Stuck between these two because their both his absolute favourite and he can't pick. He relates so immensely to them and just likes watching gay boys exist and feels represented through these films the most.
Syl- Frozen
Utterly obsessed with the characters and the story of a girl coming into her own by fleeing home and then also the themes of family and familial love is so precious to her. She also just adores the music and sings/hums them at any given time.
Wit- Paddington 2
It's funny and silly and Wit appreciates good art.

So I’ve actually spent way too much time thinking about that jasnah at the shattered plains adaptation, and I think I’ve found the solution. You just have to make it a comedy!
So shallan meets up with jasnah and becomes her ward. In karbranth so that taravangian can be introduced but leaves quickly for the shattered plains. Most of the plot afterwards is just shallan having to deal with kholin drama on a daily basis.
Reoccurring plot points would be
Adolin trying to set renarin up with a date, while consistently missing how he totally has his heart set on a guy already
Jasnah joining adolin, renarin and dalinar in trying to figure out what is going on with the visions while trying to hide it. Except they are obnoxiously bad at it
Like dalinar will go “oh I think a highstorm is coming” and adolin will slam open a closet door while jasnah and renarin shove him inside
To counter this elhokar, navani and shallan team up in trying to figure out what’s going on
Which makes things difficult for her since navani and jasnah absolutely do not get along and she struggles to pick a side
She is of course still trying to steal the soulcaster, so maybe really bad attempts that totally fail? I’m struggling to make this funny
Navani is in full “seduce the blackthorn” mode, Dalinars reactions are exactly the same, staring into the sun in order not to look at her. The scene of them kissing for the first time is also the same, with the kids all watching awkwardly. Renarin removes his glasses
Shallan and adolin awkwardly flirting with each other is a daily occurrence
And at least one scene of adolin being sad over a breakup lying on the couch, head in navani’s lap while she plays with his hair and comforts him (because yes they would!) meanwhile jasnah is dissing his boyfriend abilities completely (she’s being supportive, just with very tough love)
Wit is of course always around, sometimes just hangin out without any explanation of how he got there (if it’s a badly written one he could also flirt with jasnah wayne style until she reciprocates in the 4th season, but I’d rather not watch that, so maybe they slowly team up and murder people?)
There is one (serious) scene where jasnah is busy scribing for the boys and shallan remarks on how she grew up with a lot of brothers while looking uncomfortable, as a nod to her past
Jasnah also makes a comment about watching her father being killed, insinuating that shallan wouldn’t understand. Meanwhile shallan is internally freaking out
Finding out about the sadeas betrayal is just jasnah entering murder mode, she even reaches out her hand subtlety hinting towards having a shardblade. The only reason sadeas isn’t dead at the spot is because she realizes how distressed renarin is and decides to comfort him instead
I was going to say something about the shartplate date scene, but that’s just too low
Bridge 4 would probably have to go tho since their story doesn’t lend well to comedy

so I'm trying to Think Elhokar thoughts or at least convert things over from when I had two working braincells on Twitter but I'm feeling just a little silly, perhaps whacky, one might even say crazy and as such I have donned my aluminum lined bowler hat and evolved in my path as an Elhokar Lives Truther.
Here's my headcanon/possibly theory on how Elhokar might actually still be alive!
Spoiler Warning: this contains spoilers up to Rhythm of War
Anyway, disclaimer: I know Elhokar is dead and has been dead since original drafts however this sign can't stop me if I can't read.
Aside from that, here's the list of the evidence that Elhokar is dead and I will follow them with counter arguments, because I am-- as the survivor put it-- insane.
Here are relevant passages for Elhokar's death scene in Oathbringer, Chapter 84:
Kaladin could almost hear Elhokar stuttering the words.
Life … life before death …
The hair on Kaladin’s neck rose. Elhokar started to glow softly.
Strength … before weakness …
“Do it, Elhokar,” Kaladin whispered.
Journey. Journey before …
Lowering his spear, Moash ran Elhokar through the chest.
Moash pinned the king to the ground, shoving aside the weeping child prince with his foot. He placed his boot against Elhokar's throat, holding him down, then pulled the spear out and stabbed Elhokar through the eye as well.
He held the weapon in place, glow around the king fading and flickering out. The king's Shardblade appeared from mist and clanged to the ground beside him.
Elhokar, king of Alethkar, was dead.
Moash pulled the spear free and glanced at the Shardblade. Then kicked it aside.
This is also for my own organizational purposes, so I'm gonna list the dry facts from this. Some of these will seem stupidly obvious and 1) some are, and they are for me so please be patient with me and 2) bear with me on this
Chapter is from Kaladin's perspective
Elhokar begins swearing the first ideal of the radiants, but does not finish
Elhokar begins to glow with Stormlight
Moash stabs Elhokar through the chest with a spear
Moash stabs Elhokar through the eye with the same spear
Moash holds the spear through Elhokar's eyes until the glow of Stormlight "faded and flickers out"
Elhokar's shardblade appears next to him
Kaladin sees (or thinks he sees) Elhokar is dead
Elhokar was bonding a Cryptic
I'll likely come back and edit this post once I do another read through because this is JUST from this one scene and while there is additional context added after I know I'm going to burn out if I try to get everything in order first time through. So this post is a WIP.
A few things I want to point out:
Moash stabs him with a spear not a Shardblade. A mundane spear. We know Stormlight can help with that.
For the stab through the eyes, Shallan later in this same book takes a crossbow bolt to the head and it remains lodged there until she is able to pull it out. So, Stormlight has the potential to heal even major brain trauma.
As for the Shardblade. In chapter 89 of Words of Radiance, Dalinar swears his oaths to The Stormfather. Immediately after, his bond to his Shardblade is instantaneously broken. While Radiants can still bond Shardblades, I'm not sure we've seen another Radiant break the bond. The only other instance I can think of is Renarin who bonded a dead blade after becoming Radiant. He presumably broke the bond before handing it over to the ardents, but we didn't see exactly how long it took. As such, I'm going with that they can break bonds to the old blades just as quickly as Dalinar did and not that it was an effect of him bonding The Stormfather specifically.
The Stormlight going out. This is where it becomes important that this chapter is from Kaladin's perspective. While we don't know for sure if this is just something she can do, one of the first tricks Shallan figures out is how to suppress light, and so far as I am aware she hasn't ever explained this trick to Kaladin.
Finally, Elhokar doesn't technically finish the words. In the last chapter of Rhythm of War, The Stormfather recounts how he gave Eshonai One Final Gift. Despite not being able to speak, The Stormfather accepted her intent, the spirit of the oaths. As we do not know exactly what was going through Elhokar's mind in his dying moments, we can't be sure, but for this Headcanon/Theory/whatever this is, I'm going with this same "loophole." Additionally, who exactly can accept or deny oaths has been somewhat loose. We know, again mostly from Shallan, that the Cryptic would be the one to accept or deny truths, so I don't think it's so much of a stretch to think they'd also be the ones to accept the initial oath.
This does leave one additional problem though, at least it did for me. Design, whom Brandon has confirmed was going to be Elhokar's spren, is now bonded to Wit.
This is where this really, I admit, starts to get hairy. But recall in The Way of Kings how Shallan, peeking into Shadesmar, definitely sees multiple Cryptics. (I'd need to double check exactly, but I believe Elhokar also states the "shadows" he sees are also plural, not singular, but that could have just referenced multiple instances.) Pattern also explains to Shallan that the Cryptics decide specifically who to send, and at least in her case, chose her specifically. We don't know if this is true for every Lightweaver, but I don't think Pattern specifically states he was the only one sent to possibly bond her. So, basically what I'm saying is that yes Design was sent for Elhokar, but perhaps another ended up bonding him in the end.
Does that make sense, no! That's why I call myself crazy lmao. I really do want to reiterate this isn't a serious theory so much as a headcanon and maybe a little hope. Please feel free to add on your thoughts/counters! I love expanding this theory to be as vaguely canon compliant as it can be, considering the circumstances. I also realize there's a host of other problems for after the others escape into Shadesmar, but I'd like to save that for a separate post lmao. I'm not great at conclusions, but thank you for reading this far!

Okay yeah maybe Kaladin’s parents have a healthy relationship with each other but Kaladin and Lirin have a horrible relationship and he’s a ridiculously toxic father and just generally a horrible person when it comes to actually you know, treating his son with even the slightest bit of love and respect, which he’s utterly incapable of doing
You know I’m going to have to disagree with you here. This doesn’t seem like the type of reaction that someone would give to their son believed to be dead if they hated him and were incapable of treating him with love and respect.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not to mention Lirin was the sole surgeon of Hearthstone. That takes a large mental toll on a person. And I think Lirin is very similar to many a man in any small farming community and doesn’t know how to show his love outwardly often. (Sources: my mom works ER as a nurse and it’s a hassle somedays. And also living in a small agricultural community of under 8k people all my life)
And so no. Lirin is not the perfect father. He’s got flaws. But so does Dalinar. Nobody ever talks about how Dalinar was a horrible father for Adolin and Renarin when they were children. Lirin wants to see the best for Kaladin and in his eyes it’s not being a radiant. But that’s because he didn’t see the changes that Kaladin went through while he was away. To Lirin it was sons go off to war -> one dies -> the other dies -> a year after the sons back from the dead -> he’s got slave brands -> he’s a shardbearer? -> he’s a radiant!
But we got to see the characters development and we get to see the struggles Kaladin goes through. While again Lirin doesn’t because he’s not omniscient. Does he not 100% agree with what Kaladin does? Yes. But do your parents 100% agree with what you’re doing? I’m going to guess probably not.

After a harrowing search I’ve finally got my books 😭 I’ll be starting with Edgedancer then moving to Oathbringer, then I picked up Dawnshard as well. Let’s have a check-in:
Predictions:
- I’m still holding on that Dalinar, despite being My Dude, is the infamous double wife killer I’ve heard rumour of. I think he must have killed his wife, wished for her back, and then was cursed to kill her again
- Zahel is a Herald. He’s a weird guy who talks funny that’s really about all I have.
- the Alethi light eyes are the descendants of those first people who took up the discarded Shardblades. Their eyes only went lighter, not the full glow of a Radiant, because the Blade was dead and they used the Blades to conquer others to rise in social standing. Eventually the eye colour passes on hereditarily.
Spoilers I am aware of:
- Well I have seen that Gavilar was trying to become a Herald, although I don’t even know how that’s possible so it’s kind of not much of a spoiler without more context
- Jasnah calls for the killing of all Parshendi - I figure this is different from what the Alethi were trying to do already so I’m assuming she means the parshmen too, before the storm transforms them so uh yeah that seems Problematic but so does the whole Parshendi race so far so need to find out more
Most excited for:
- Windrunners vs Skybreakers as it seems this could be the echoes of the rifts in the Radiants, one order devoted to “good” and one to “law” which of course don’t always overlap
- and speaking to that, finding out more about what Helarin was up to
- more Radiant powers as the Orders expand, like does Kaladin have his second Surge yet? I’m still a little lost on what’s actually a Surge or not. Or seeing what else Jasnah can do, or what Dalinar’s abilities will be as a Bondsmith, or anything about Renarin
- Dalinar and Stormfather’s “this is our get-along” bond
- hey where is that Collector guy from the first book! He was so cool!
- Shallan/Jasnah reunion I am desperate!!
- just more Shallan adventures in general
- and of course, the return of my one my only Jasnah and her own PoVs

I’m starting Rhythm of War today, which I’m very excited about. But first some thoughts about Oathbringer under the cut
I looove Queen Jasnah. She was already pretty much a queen who was just missing a crown and I really hope she gets chapters in RoW to get her perspective on how she views this new responsibility, especially considering her little brother had to die for it.
Elhokars death made me sadder than I thought it would. If he had died earlier I think I would have cared only in regards to his families reaction and less about the death itself. But there is something about a character that realises his shortcomings and works to better himself only to fucking die right when he starts to change, that’s just a punch to the gut.
Dalinars backstory is brutal and I’m wondering if he will tell Adolin and Renarin about the actual circumstances of Evis death. There is so much potential there to explore the family dynamic more in how the brothers might react differently to the news and the tension that it could put on the different relationships, but I think there is probably not enough time for extended Kholin family drama
I’d love to see more of Renarin in general, though. Loved his scenes with Jasnah and I also hope we get more interactions with Adolin. Also have no idea how that whole corrupted-spren business will develop. What exactly is even the difference to regular Truthwatchers? If they didn’t see the future because that’s bad, then what could they see?? I really should have paid more attention, when the little blurbs at the start of chapters talked about the Knights Radiant...
Sooo ...is Maya coming back to life? I mean she basically saved Adolin in shadesmar and she was able to tell him her name  and that has to count for something, right? So Adolin could possibly become an Edgedancer and I like the thought that the ‘dead’ spren could be saved (Also the thought of Adolin and Lift training together is pretty hilarious).
That said Adolins insecurities about leadership and his role in the war effort, now that practically everyone around him is Radiant, have to come back in some way. He dodged the crown, but maybe those themes could also be explored in his new position as Highprince? Thrusting him into a leadership position he didn’t want or prepare for, would probably more effective for this, though.
I was right and Shallan and Adolin got married and then I didn’t even get a wedding scene. Still happy about the outcome though. And I know Sanderson didn’t intend this, but with the way Kaladin and Adolin think about each other and the feelings they both have for Shallan and vice versa, there’s like a perfect set up for the Kaladin/Shallan/Adolin OT3 in the canon text. Obviously that won’t actually happen and I am happy with canon as it is, als long as I get plenty more interactions between these three.
I don’t think Moash will be redeemed and I think it has to be Kaladin who takes him down. I’m not sure what the next words will be, but I could see something along the lines of accepting that not every person can be or even wants to be saved, maybe??
So Azure is Vivenna and Zahel is Vasher, right? Where there like hints I was too dumb to notice in the Zahel-scenes?
I hope RoW dives more into Ghostbloods-plot (which by the way is a pretty sick name for a secret organisation)
So far there hasn’t been a really major character death and that still makes me nervous. Like disaster did strike, but all in all the pov-characters got through it more or less unscathed. I’m still kinda waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Kholin and Stormblessed Family Parallels
Lirin & Dalinar: Stubborn and opinionated.  Quick to anger.  Could intimidate a stormwall with a glare. Doesn’t automatically respect the authority of others
Kaladin & Adolin: Eldest sons whose fathers wanted them to just be upgraded versions of themselves.  Early in their lives, were pretty d*mn good at meeting those expectations but made decisions they thought were right but contradicted their father’s strict moralities and are now somewhat estranged from their fathers.  Protective of their beloved younger brothers
Tien & Renarin: Second son to fathers with high expectations.  Physically frail or weak in ways that prevented them from living up to their fathers’ dreams and were subsequently given less attention/love. Encouraged to take alternate careers/vocations that are less respected by their fathers.  Picked on by peer children and were protected by their older brothers
Hesina & Navani: Mothers who at one point believed two of their children were dead.  Youngest child stayed dead.  Firstborn returned from death after a period of mourning, carrying traumas that they won’t talk about. Firstborns have risen to greater power than had been previously expected of them and now the mothers have to watch as their returned children return time and again to dangerous battlefields
Kaladin & Jasnah: Secretly bonded Radiant spren and progressed in their oaths without the help of their families.  Long journeys to return home after supposed death, which included long segments travelling without Stormlight.  Take in strays and forms them into more formidable/powerful people. Think that Meridas Amaram is a piece of sh*t.
Hesina & Evi: Married men whose decisions led to serious consequences for their families.  Moved far away from their families & childhood homes, into unfamiliar environments to be with their husbands.  The sunshine to their stormwall husbands
Oroden & Gavinor: Little sweet babies that are (hopefully) going to be especially loved and cherished because their family members have already lost so much. Kind of implied that they’re replacements/stand-ins for their dead brother/father.
Tien & Elhokar: Considered weaker and less powerful than their relatives.  Budding radiants when they were killed
Lirin & Shallan: When their families experience financial pressure, steal from /rob more powerful lighteyes.  They don’t get away with it and face varying consequences from their targets

Dalinar leaped to his feet, reaching over Gavilar and grabbing the assassin by the neck. He spun the would-be killer around and slammed him to the floor with a satisfying crunch. Still in motion, Dalinar grabbed the knife from the table and pounded it into the assassin’s chest.
Puffing, Dalinar stepped back and wiped the rainwater from his eyes. Gavilar sprang to his feet, Shardblade appearing in his hand. He looked down at the assassin, then at Dalinar.
Dalinar kicked at the assassin to be sure he was dead. He nodded to himself, righted his chair, sat down, then leaned over and yanked the man’s knife from his chest. A fine blade.
He washed it off in his wine, then cut off a piece of his steak and shoved it into his mouth. Finally.
“Good pork,” Dalinar noted around the bite.
Young Blackthorn was Chaos incarnate and reading Oathbringer for the first time really messed with my mind so much because he was like, such a kindly trustworthy Dad in the previous books, y’know??? This scene in particular made me stop reading and walked around my room for a bit, because like, dalinar w h y would you stab an assassin and then continue eating WITH THE KNIFE THAT YOU USED TO KILL HIM?????? It really explained very well Adolin and Renarin’s personalities as well, like whewww they are his kids indeed.
Showed this to a few friends and they really disagreed with my portrayal 😅 Would really love to hear what you all think as well!
