OMORI - Voice Actor Headcanons.

While I haven’t exactly finished this game yet, I am close enough to the end and have met basically all the characters, so I think it’s time I got around to doing my good ol’ series of VA headcanons for a game that either doesn’t have one, or doesn’t have an English Dub.

This time we’re doing Omori, a game I started playing at the beginning of this year and have fallen in love with very very quickly. I’ve been through a very painful time of my life recently and this game helped me work through it letting me know that it doesn’t matter how I grieve, just that any way I can is correct.

And the way the characters work together in the game is also incredible, and I was eagerly awaiting to get to the point that I’m at so I could do a VA headcanons section for this. So before we get started, let me once again go two things.

This is NOT CANON. These are HEADCANONS and are unofficial. It’s just a hypothetical situation. If the characters were voiced, this is who I imagine would voice them.

Every major character in the games is included here, so there are HEAVY SPOILERS for the game’s main storylines. DO NOT READ THIS POST IF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED THE GAME OR DON’T WANT TO BE SPOILED.

Answers below cut!

First impression: Funny thing is that I had two first impressions of Overlord: one before I knew what IDW was, and the other after I did but before I read MTMTE and LSOTW. My very first impression was through a yt video and I was honestly really unimpressed. Like, wow nice character design, that looks so dull and boring! Where are the cool vehicle parts? Smh. I also heard that Overlord was supposed to be this super scary and murderous bot, but I never did research and just thought that that still meant he was probably a boring villain. Like, ANY villain can be touted as super scary and murderous, that doesn’t mean they’re actually good. But after I discovered what IDW was, and read a few things about OL (including fics and comic dubs that helped introduce me to his character), I immediately took everything back. Like OKAY, never mind, this guy sounds AWESOME. As someone who loves villains, I had a feeling he was right up my alley.

Impression now: Gotta be one of, if not my most favorite Transformers villain ever. While I'm unsure if he's in my top five favorite transformers characters, he's definitely in an echelon on his own, unbound by such a simple list. Overlord makes me inexplicably happy. He's a horrible, horrible person, and does horrible, horrible things, but he's fun. He's aside from almost every other TF villain; he doesn't need a sad backstory or heaping dumps of complexity to himself. He practically chose to be irredeemable and henceforth revels in it. Of course he has some things that you can feel bad for, but compared to other TF villains? There's not much. My personal lack of sympathy for him is what makes him all the more enjoyable to follow. Not to mention, he's a lot of fun to draw; I thought his design was lame at first, but it's quickly become one of my favorites. It's also easy and fun to draw, and the color choices are (at least in IDW's case) bright and colorful and fit my personal tastes! Overlord is just someone I love to hate. Every moment with him is as thrilling as it is terrifying. Again: fun. I could honestly break down into a novel on why I like him so much but that's for another day...

Favorite moment: I can't choose but honestly I really liked it when he burst through his restraints on the lost light. Not only was that shot amazing, but his reasoning was token to his character: he could've broken free at any time, but he didn't feel like it until he learned that Megatron was alive. What a freakin DRAMA QUEEN. I also liked his dumb quarrel with Tarn and their back and forth about who Megatron likes more.

Idea for a story: Overlord deserves to be the main villain of SOME transformers media. I have a couple of story ideas myself but since they're actually headcanon-fics, I couldn't get into detail about them here. But one of them is the entirety of Super God Masterforce but remade for the modern day, which I've been thinking of sharing sometime soon... [but also I want a whole spinoff of MTMTE where it's him, Tarn and the DJD, and Deathsaurus's crew lost on the other side of space, and they have to tolerate each other and be a dysfunctional family while they find their way back. Also another story with Overlord as Megan trying to understand wtf human life is like on his mission to be a politician. I have a lot of thoughts as you can see,,,]

Unpopular opinion: I really don't like that southern accent on him. They should've made Patrick Seitz use his Dio voice. TBH my voice claim for him is Tim Curry with like, the slightest of a british accent. So like the lord of darkness from Legend but a little less growly. Also why do people ship Overpan/Overmax it's really uncomfortable...

Favorite relationship: Him and Tarn. They're so chaotic and whiny, and it's fun to watch them bicker like children. Good lord put them in day care

Favorite headcanon: I did like this whole thing for PWT where I explained through a meme why Overlord was worthy of the Unicron matrix like an anti-prime, and I am STILL clinging on to it as part of my personal canon. Also, I feel like if Overlord hadn't gone the way of a gladiator, he would've used his perfect frame and his theatrics to be an actor or someone in whatever the Cybertronian equivalent of the beauty/modeling industry is

Psycho Analysis: DIO

(WARNING! This analysis contains SPOILERS!)

Finally. After leaving this sitting in my drafts for a year, I’m finally going to tackle the big one, the man, the myth, the legend that is Dio Brando, or as he would be known at the height of his power… DIO.

DIO is one of anime and manga’s most famous antagonists, and quite frankly it isn’t too hard to see why. The guy is flamboyant, dramatic, oozes sexual charisma, and is just in general a formidable foe. He’s everything an evil vampire should be. But more than that, he’s everything a great antagonist in general should be. He’s hammy, he’s deliciously evil, he’s overly-dramatic... other villains wish they could be as delightfully extra as DIO. And even on top of all that, he continued affecting the series and pop culture long after he bit the dust.

Motivation/Goals: DIO simply starts as a selfish man who wants the sort of life he feels he is owed; to this end, he goes out of his way to screw Jonathan Joestar out of his perfect life and make him miserable while supplanting him as the golden boy in the eyes of the Joestar patriarch and become the sole inheritor of his fortune. But as time goes on and Jonathan begins to unravel Dio’s schemes, he utilizes an ancient stone mask to become a powerful vampire, and shifts his goal from merely inheriting a fortune to conquering the world. Even a silly thing like decapitation doesn’t stop him; after Jonathan ends up beheading him, he simply attaches his head onto Jonathan’s corpse and after many decades returns more powerful than ever to create the ideal world: one where he reigns supreme with the power of The World to squash all opposition.

Frankly, DIO’s motivations are incredibly standard supervillain stuff, but it’s the way he does things to achieve his goals that make them cool. Much like every great villain in the series, DIO is incapable of going a single moment without doing something either flamboyant or awesome, and much like everyone in the series he often combines the two. This is the man who figured the best way to kill a guy is to drop a steamroller on him and decided becoming a vampire was the logical response to being cornered by the police, so it stands to reason that no matter what he does he would do it with the over-the-top style of the series he hails from.

Performance: Anime voice actor extraordinaire Patrick Seitz voices DIO, and he makes him just as insane, over-the-top, and hammy as you would expect from a vampire who dresses like he had the raw essence of the 1980s injected into his veins.

Final Fate: DIO made one very simple mistake in the midst of all his scheming during the events of Stardust Crusaders: he pissed Jotaro off. It did not end well for the vampire. However, even after his death, DIO’s influence continues to effect the series in numerous ways, particularly Vento Aureo and Stone Ocean, both arcs that deal with characters that have strong ties to the man himself. Even Diamond is Unbreakable would not have happened the way it did if not for him.

Best Scene: The entire final battle with Jotaro is one of the defining moments of the whole series, but considering it takes up several episodes it would be cheating to put it here; if this were the OVA from the 90s, where his fight took up only about eleven minutes, I’d cheat and put it here. But there is a truly iconic moment that stands out even among a battle filled with standout moments: Dio, finally tired of Jotaro’s crap, decides he’s going to “roll all over” him, and drops a steamroller on his head in stopped time.

Best Quote: Are you kidding? Everything out of this man’s mouth becomes a meme. I truly cannot single out one single line from the man to say is his best. EVERYTHING he says is awesome, especially his quotes when he pulls off his super move in Heritage for the Future.

Final Thoughts & Score: DIO is fascinating because he actually changes and adapts as time goes on. At the start, as a human, he is a bratty, monstrous, self-serving young man, one who was quick to blame his actions on his upbringing under his cruel father Dario. After Jonathan befriends Speedwagon and catches on to Dio’s scheming though, Dio’s justifications fall apart, and so Dio rejects his humanity, becoming a vampire who plays with his power like a child plays with his toys on Christmas. He begins to revel in his evil, and fully embraces his inhuman nature.

Then after his first defeat, Dio changes even more, becoming more self-aware of his limitations. Stardust Crusaders in particular shows that he has outgrown his immature belief of humanity’s inferiority to vampires; he has far more human followers in that arc, and it is even revealed in later arcs he sired quite a few children with human women. Still, with that in mind, it is quite apparent that he still views himself as the peak lifeform. He’s a lot more cautious and manipulative this time around as he heals and becomes accustomed to his new body. and while he is obviously dangerous, until the very end his role is far more passive.

Of course, once he finally gains the blood of a Joestar, he goes off the deep end, and his old persona rises again only far more mad than ever before, with his contempt for humanity, massive ego, and overwhelming arrogance inflating to the point that his defiance leads directly into his ultimate downfall. And it’s not like this was missing prior; these traits were very much present before he drained Joseph. But when he thought his victory was assured, he dropped all pretense and revealed his true colors.

The one thing true of DIO across all of his appearances is that he is charming, he is cunning, and he’s not a force to be taken lightly. It’s so interesting that he gets such a noticeable character arc that goes across several storylines and even expands long after he is killed. His staying power and the depth of his personality transcending his lifetime is just another element that adds onto the staying power of his character.

DIO is one of the most enjoyable anime antagonists ever made. The fact that he acts as an overarching villain for nearly the entire series, with his presence being felt even in the three parts directly after his death, is a testament to just how depraved and powerful DIO was. It’s so easy to see why DIO is so wildly popular; on top of being a powerful formidable threat, he just oozes style and charisma, with every little thing he does being the sort of insane over-the-top craziness you could want out of the series.

11/10 is the obvious score for DIO. He’s easily one of the best vampires in all of fiction, and definitely one of the coolest. The fact that even through all the craziness surrounding him, he had a well-defined character arc and managed to effect so much after his death just manages to make him one of the more successful villains out there, even if only inadvertently. The manga has already shown us all the pain that’s to come from DIO’s actions, so when it’s finally animated it will only further solidify DIO’s ranking as one of the best villains ever crafted. And that’s not even getting into his playable outings in games such as All-Star Battle and Heritage for the Future, the latter being one of his most iconic appearances ever and the source of dozens of his most famous memes. He’s such a prominent figure in popular culture that you may have seen something inspired by him without even realizing it; I was aware of many of his iconic quotes years before I ever comprehended what JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure was thanks to memes and videos online.

The fact that even through the hamminess DIO is just an unrepentantly evil bastard is incredible. He dresses like an 80s pop star, he gloats like a petty schoolchild, he’s extremely dramatic, and yet he is one of the cruelest, most evil villains ever created. He killed a dog just because he got rightfully beaten down, made a mother eat her own baby, forced a senator to run over innocent bystanders, blasted a hole through Kakyoin, and relished in every single one of those actions. And even from beyond the grave, DIO’s dark shadow still plagued the Joestar’s. Evil such as DIO just never dies, and I certainly wouldn’t want it any other way.

My Personal Biases: I didn’t have any experience with the Jojo Franchise until I came across JStars Victory Vs.

My Verdict: Call it Bizarre. Call it out of this world. Call it slightly homoerotic. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, even before the introduction of Stands was an entertaining ride that included vampires, mad German scientists, Pillar Men and Breathing techniques in a steal of a 12 dollar package. If you haven’t picked this up yet, do yourself a favor and check it out!

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure The Complete First Season, a review

In 2012, David Productions took Hirihiko Araki’s manga, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and adapted it into what would be a worldwide phenomenon. The manga had been adapted previously into a series of OVAs (Original Video Animation) that only covered the most popular part, Stardust Crusaders. The anime starts right from the beginning and begins from the manga’s origins as well as the original character. Unlike other Shounen Manga, the Jojo series is infamous for (among other things) having multiple protagonists each being the different lead in a ‘Part’. For the first part, the protagonist or ‘Jojo’ is Johnathan Joestar while the second part has its protagonist in the form of Joseph Joestar.

I’m going to split this review between the first part, Phantom Blood and the second part, Battle Tendency.

Part 1: Phantom Blood

In 19th Century England, two very different boys are born into two very different families. Jonathan Joestar is the son of a rich nobleman and known for his kind nature and politeness, but isn’t so much useful in a fight. Dio Brando is born to an alcoholic father and despite his prodigy, he is most likely destined to a life of poverty, had Dio’s Father, Dario have a debt owed to him by Jonathan’s father, George. (This is because George Joestar mistakenly thought Dario saved his life when in actually Dario was in the vicinity trying to rob George’s corpse). In an attempt to pay off the debt, George adopts Dio into his family.

I know a lot of people gloss over the first part because it’s not what made the main core of the series, but there’s still a lot of fun to be had if you let it.

Dio torments and bullies Jonathan by killing his dog, stealing his father’s affection and even kissing the girl Jonathan fancies, Erina. But as the step-brothers grow older and older, they’re prepared to do battle for one another while Jonathan still maintains his gentle nature. However, when George takes ill because of Dio’s poisoning, Dio dons a very interesting Aztec mask that turns him into a Vampire. George, unfortunately, dies in the middle of the battle.

Using his wits, Jonathan sets his childhood home on fire and sets Dio ablaze. Jonathan comes out burned but alive. As Erina helps Jonathan recover from his injuries, a strange man confronts the two of them.

Zeppeli tells Jonathan that Dio not only survived the incident but has come back and is building an army of vampires. Zeppeli offers to teach Jonathan Hamon, the ability to use one’s breath to stir up the energy inside in order to imbue attacks with sunlight energy in the hopes of vanquishing Dio once and for all.

(Yes, the fact that the same voice performers who played Ichigo Kurosaki and Rukia Kuchiki with thick British accents amuses me greatly.)

Though short, the series does have fun action scenes (including one fight with a chain).

Through his chivalrous spirit and quick wits, Jonathan defeats Dio.

Jonathan and Erina finally get married, but all is not well on their cruise to America. The disembodied head of Dio still remains and is causing havoc with its tentacles and laser eyes. Realizing Dio is too great a threat to go unchecked, Jonathan ensures the safety of the other passengers, including his newlywed Erina, and destroys the ship and him along with it.

And so, Jonathan sacrifices himself to save the world from Dio. Erina survives and lives in America.

Viz Media and BangZoom did the localization of the show and for the most part, it sticks closely to the Japanese Script. However, because the show is set in 19th century, BangZoom told everyone to adopt thick, British accents.

And it’s bloody hysterical. At times, I thought I was watching a BBC documentary intercut with a battle shounen.

I don’t know if Patrick Seitz can ever measure up to Takehito Koyasu’s legendary take on the character, but he makes a game effort of it. While Seitz’s voice doesn’t differ too much from his other role, the energy and performance are worthy enough (at least to me) to compare with his Japanese counterpart.

Johnny Yong Bosch is as Johnny Yong Bosch as he’ll ever be. He’s not bad as Johnathan but you can tell he’s struggling both under the accent and giant with a heart of gold persona. It’d be one thing if he were playing an edgy teenager like Ichigo Kurosaki or a kid like Renton Thurston but he’s caught in the role that might’ve been suited to someone else.

Keith Silverstein (who also voiced Hisoka from Hunter x Hunter) is having a grand old time as Robert Speedwagon. Marc Diraison (who voiced Guts in Beserk and ‘Zolo’ in the 4kids dub of One Piece) shows genuine emotion as George Joestar. Also, can we just give a hand to Michelle Ruff? I know she’s done a lot of roles, including ones from Ayako Kawasumi (such as Saber from Fate/Stay Night and Chikane Himemiya from Kannazuki no Miko) but she plays a great Erina both young and old.

With the end of Part 1 and the closing of Jonathan’s story, we move onto Part 2.

Part 2: Battle Tendency

So, it’s 1928, New York. We follow a black boy named Smokey Robinson as he’s being hassled by the police for being a pickpocket. Before this turns into a docudrama on the History Channel, a six foot stranger with a British accent appears.

Here we meet the Jojo of this story arc, Joseph Joestar, grandson of Jonathan and Erina.

(Yes, I find the fact that Joseph is played by the same voice performer as Kids Next Door’s Nigel Uno extremely hysterical. He’s even using the same voice!)

But all’s not well in New York. Joseph encounters a vampire that’s somehow resistant to Hamon.

With the rise of Vampires that are somewhat resistant to Hamon as well as the strange disappearance of Mr. Speedwagon, Joeseph sets off on a trip that will take him all over the world from the scorching hot deserts of South America to the beautiful city of Venice and even over a Volcano. The conspiracy leads to the awakening of the Pillar Men, ancient Aztec warriors who are bent on destroying humanity unless Joeseph can team up with the grandson of Zeppilli and stop them once and for all. Kars, however, might be the most difficult opponent of all and when he transforms into an ultimate superbeing capable of not being harmed by Hamon or Sunlight, Joespeh’s wits are put to the limit.

Here we get a distinct difference between the two protagonists. While Jonathan was honorable, kind and courteous, Joseph is devious, scheming and a bit of a trickster.

I really love Joseph. In fact, through parts 1 through 6, he’s probably my favorite of the protagonists. See, Joseph is constantly pitted against more experienced enemies that have a physical advantage over him. Joseph overcomes this by tricking and deceiving his opponents. Sometimes, his bluffs work because of his cleverness. Other times, he’s just damn lucky. Joseph likes to predict his opponent’s next line, say it and basically outsmart them.

At times, Joseph is willing to make a complete idiot out of himself, just for a moment’s opportunity to trick his foe. Such as dressing up in women’s clothing and bribing some enemy soldiers.

Joseph continues to hone is Hamon skills in order to defeat the Pillar Men. But not before meeting two beauties by the names of Lisa Lisa, a Hamon teacher who might have a secret of two and Suzie Q, a cute Italian girl.

Part 2’s filled with wall to wall exploits, including mad German scientists, Chariot Races and an incredible finish with Joseph facing off against Kars on top of a Volcano.

Joseph defeats Kars and returns in surprise to his own funeral, but not before getting a new metal hand and marrying Suzy Q.

And thus ends Battle Tendency. A lot of people consider this their favorite part and I’m among them. Aside from Joeseph’s antics, there’s a lot of fire and energy you just don’t see nowadays. From battling vampires on top the Brooklyn Bridge to flying a plane over a volcanic island to defeat an Ubermensch, Battle Tenacity had a lot of creativity and seeing Joeseph get out of each situation with his wits and sheer dumb luck is a joy to behold.

Ben Diskin (who also performed Sai from Naruto and Knuckle from Hunter x Hunter) is hysterical as Joseph and the fact that he has this thick British accent the whole time makes it worthwhile. Diskin’s always had a great range but him playing this buffoon makes the whole enterprise a laugh riot.

Wendee Lee as Lisa Lisa is fine (that’s not to say that Wendee Lee gives a bad performance, far from it. It’s just that after voicing so many roles, you can tell which ones she’s pouring her soul into and which ones she’s just putting on a funny accent. This is the latter). It’s also nice to hear Stephanie Sheh as Suzy Q being more of a lighthearted ditz rather than a shy introvert.

Aside from the wackiness and over the top reactions, what really sets this series apart is the animation. Using striking color pallets and digging into the manga aesthetic really sets the tone whether it’s Joseph goofing off or Jonathan fighting a desperate battle. David Productions made their name with this series and it’s no surprise they’ve been listed to do other works such as Fire Force. Even when the anime resorts to using a panning shot or speed lines, there’s a kinetic pace that pulls you in.

But, you didn’t come here for Jonathan, did you? You didn’t come here for Joseph, either. You came for a certain high schooler with a hat and a mission.

Stand proud, true crusaders.

Sociopath Profile: DIO

Full name: Dio Brando From Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Appearing in Part 1, Phantom Blood (1987 manga; season 1 anime (2012-2013)), and Part 3, Stardust Crusaders (1989-1992 manga; season 3 anime (2014-2015)) Voiced by Takehito Koyasu (JP TV), Nobu Tanaka (JP OVA), Patrick Seitz (EN TV), and Andrew Chaikin (EN OVA)

I’m gonna make a little self-imposed challenge. I bet you I can easily prove to you he’s a psycho-/sociopath without even having to go into his actions as a vampire. Everything before that point is more than enough to convince you. I could include a few good examples from later on, but this is a character that establishes himself early on as someone without any sense of decency. Much like I said in my profile about Palpatine, with all of his time in the series, the evidence in favor of the case far outweighs any evidence against it.

Dio Brando grew up with a drunkard father, Dario, who was a pretty selfish himself. While Dio may have already been pretty bad on his own, that sort of influence didn’t really help. However, even Speedwagon notes that while he can claim that his bad upbringing made him the way he is, he can sense that Dio was like this from birth and his upbringing had almost nothing to do with it. This gives the impression that he’s more of a psychopath than a sociopath.

He only cares about himself and only watches out for his own skin first and foremost. It doesn’t matter if you’re nice to him. You’re just a means to an end for Dio. In fact, once Dario dies from Dio’s poisoning, Dio just spits on his grave out of spite even though he had him set to go to the Joestar Manor where he would live easy. Even with that one thing he did nice for Dio, he still resented the man nonetheless.

And that’s not even getting into what he does at the manor. Literally, one of the first things he does is kick Jojo’s dog Danny in the face for getting near him! And then going on to say that Jojo shouldn’t try to cross him. He just met the guy, who was just trying to be nice and introduce himself, and he already goes on a warpath like he owns the place.

And “arrogant” would not even begin to cover Dio’s grandiose sense of self-worth. He believes that he deserves everything, even the Joestar fortune as his inheritance - even though he isn’t even a blood relative. It’s only by pure luck that Dario came across George Joestar to save him and decided to owe him a life debt. He’s an entitled bastard and thinks the world revolves around him.

And most of the stuff he does to Jojo is pretty much just to cause him needless suffering for no reason other than to break his spirit. He could’ve just played nice and waited for a moment to gain George’s favor over his own son (something I’ll discuss in the next paragraph), but he just wanted to rub it in to make it even worse off for him. Forcing a kiss on Erina, beating Jojo in boxing, and locking Danny in the incinerator are all things he didn’t have to do to get the fortune, but he did anyway for no good reason other than to mess with Jojo.

Despite his abhorrent personality, he can come off as a charming and respectable young man. He’s a great actor, liar, and manipulator so he’s able to put up a front of being a gentleman when it suits him. Especially to earn the favor of his peers so no one would think he’s anything other than a great guy. Five years after the Danny incident, he doesn’t do anything overtly cruel to Jojo to the point that he wonders how he can get along with the guy after all he did. However, this is all while he’s trying to poison George to make his death come quicker as he already thinks that Dio deserves to at least have a piece of the fortune.

And before Speedwagon calls him out as being pretty much a selfish and completely unscrupulous human being from the start, he believed that all his actions were justified since he was doing it to get what he felt he deserved. Even after he owns up to it and rejects humanity, he never feels any remorse for anything he does whatsoever.

All the vampire thing did to him was make him even worse.

Fire Emblem Three Houses (ENG vs JPN) - Opinion

This is just an opinion post for which I prefer. I have 650 hours and counting on the game, so I’ve had time to listen to a bit of both. These are the voices I prefer. I can’t say for sure which voice or dub is better. Overall, they’re both pretty solid.

Byleth (Male): Yūsuke Kobayashi | Zach Aguilar I feel like Kobayashi’s voice fits better. I just didn’t like Zach’s interpretation for Byleth or Tanjiro.

Byleth (Female) Shizuka Ito | Jeannie Tirado This one is more of a preference.

Edelgard: Ai Kakuma | Tara Platt Again, I feel like this is more of a preference. I just feel like Tara Platt doesn’t sound like a teenager either. Ai Kakuma gives her more of a softer and more “girly” vibe if that makes sense?

Dimitri Kaito Ishikawa | Chris Hackney Chris is funny with Dimitri’s character. He goes from the whole “don’t eat the weeds” to the emotional scenes that are great, and as much as I really, really, really like Ishikawa’s dialogue as well, I didn’t get the nuance from the script of the Japanese version.

Claude Toshiyuki Toyonaga | Joe Zieja This one is a tie. I couldn’t choose. I know everyone prefers Joe because he’s very involved with the fandom, but Toshi is really good too. If it makes sense, he gives Claude more of a romantic vibe? He seems a lot more flirtatious and suave in Japanese, but I will admit that there’s more nuance in the English script. Regardless, the confession scene feels way better in Japanese (Toshi does a lot of otome games so maybe it’s from that)

Hubert Katsuyuki Konishi | Robbie Daymond I don’t really like Hubert all that much, to begin with. Katsuyuki makes him sound less like a cartoon villain and more like an actual potential good guy to S-Support.

Dorothea Juri Nagatsuma | Allegra Clark When you have Dorothea and Mercedes on your team, you can only take so much “ara ara”. Allegra (not the allergy medication) also makes her sound a lot more natural. I personally didn’t notice the first time I played through that she was double-casted, but after a couple of times, I got tired of the whole “let’s hire one actor/actress to play more than one character!”

Ferdinand Taito Ban | Billy Kametz Billy Kametz just won a Crunchyroll Award for his dubbing of Shield Hero, and I can definitely see that he’s really talented. He’s pretty prolific with his roles in other anime too like Cells at Work and Demon Slayer. Both of Ferdinand's voices are a good fit, but nothing beats the FE meme of “I am Ferdinand Von Aegir”

Bernadetta Ayumi Tsuji | Erica Mendez I don’t really like either. You can open any dub out of a can, and Erica Mendez has a 50/50 shot of being there. Bernie’s JP voice is like a broken squeaky toy though, so Mendez just automatically wins.

Caspar Satoru Murakami | Ben Diskin Besides double-casting (which I’m not a fan of), Ben just made Caspar sound like too much of a child even with the time skip.

Petra Shizuka Ishigami | Faye Mata Petra’s English is probably a contributing factor. Localization does wonders.

Linhardt Shun Horie | Chris Patton You can also find Patton in a lot of other dubs. However, I just preferred Patton’s a bit more because it made him sound a bit more grown-up. Not to mention, some of his lines just fair better in English.

Dedue Hidenori Takahashi | Ben Lepley There’s such thing as making a voice a little too low, and after playing Crimson Flower, hearing the pain in Dedue’s voice after he loses his best friend is quite something.

Felix Yuichi Jose | Lucien Dodge Felix is a whiny brat, but I feel like Yuichi makes him feel like less of a whiny brat.

Mercedes Yumiri Hanamori | Dorothy Elias-Fahn There was no competition. Yumiri’s voice is the absolute perfect fit for Mercedes. Elias-Fahn’s voice made her sound like a cartoon dinosaur.

Ashe Yūki Inoue | Shannon Mckain There’s a lot more character in Mckain’s voice.

Annette Takako Tanaka | Abby Trott This is purely personal preference.

Sylvain Makoto Furukawa | Joe Brogie This one is a tie. I couldn’t choose. Joe Brogie does bring that “f-boi” vibe, but Sylvain’s confession scene in Japanese was really sweet while his English version was... passable. Furukawa’s got too much experience with those kinds of things.

Ingrid Manaka Iwami | Brittany Cox She makes Ingrid sound so sweet, and her voice has so much more emotion and character compared to Cox’s version which sounds so flat at times. Also, her death line is infinitely better post-time skip in Japanese.

Lorenz Hiroshi Watanabe | Ben Diskin Nobody likes Lorenz.

Hilda Yūki Kuwahara | Salli Saffioti Again, there’s more nuance in the localized version.

Raphael Takaki Otomari | Zachary Rice The amount of “himbo” energy stuffed into that dub is legendary.

Lysithea Aoi Yūki | Janice Roman Roku Aoi Yuuki is a symbol in the seiyuu fandom because she does a lot of voices for little girls.

Ignatz Shougo Yano | Christian La Monte They tried to do something with the JPN dub that didn’t quite work. They tried to make him sound much higher pre-time skip then made his voice hit puberty, and while I appreciate the authenticity and efforts put in, they couldn’t make it consistent so his voice was constantly going from high to low when exploring the monastery post-time skip.

Marianne Sawako Hata | Xanthe Huynh I just prefer her more soft-toned voice.

Leonie Sakura Nogawa | Ratana I don’t like Leonie that much really.

Jeralt Akio Ōtsuka | David Lodge I like both, but Lodge is a better fit for the narrator too.

Rhea Kikuko Inoue | Cherami Leigh I really like Cherami as a voice actress, but this feels like a great miscast. Her singing voice for Rhea isn’t great either, and her screams felt subpar at best. Kikuko Inoue really gave her that “wise old lady” vibe.

Sothis Tomoyo Kurosawa | Cassandra Lee Morris I don’t really like Sothis. I still say that they could’ve made a better character than that. Her child voice is offputting too.

Manuela Sachiko Kojima | Veronica Taylor No preference here because I never cared for her or ever really put her in combat.

Hanneman Kenji Hamada | W. T. Falke Hamada’s voice was a bit too deep. Besides that, the same as Manuela.

Catherine Chie Matsuura | Laura Post No preference here.

Alois Manabu Sakamaki | Dave B. Mitchell His character is based on puns, so of course, English dubbing will prevail here.

Seteth Takehito Koyasu | Mark P. Whitten Mark dubbed some fan lines, and his voice is much more distinctive and isn’t associated with any big-time characters yet (cough Dio).

Flayn Yuko Ono | Deva Marie Gregory Yuko Ono’s voice is way too high. It rivals Bernadetta.

Jeritza Atsushi Imaruoka | Patrick Seitz Patrick did a great job directing this dub, but Jeritza sounds like he’s constantly about to yawn in the English version.

Shamir Yurina Watanabe | Allegra Clark Their voices are extremely similar in quality. I just have a bit of bias, and I don’t like double-casting.

Cyril Kengo Kawanishi | Griffin Burns I don’t like Cyril. Yuri Junya Enoki | Alejandro Saab Junya provides a really good voice for Yuri. It makes him sound even more like his character if that’s even possible. Junya gave much more of that trickster “Claude” kind of vibe. It’s hard to decipher, but despite being kind of similar, Junya wins by a landslide despite Saab providing a stellar dub.

Balthus Subaru Kimura | Aaron Hedrick I think it’s because of the localized script. His voice is also a perfect fit for the character.

Constance Sarah Emi Bridcutt | Kirsten Day I can’t take all the “OHOHOHOHO” laughing all the time.

Hapi Sachika Misawa | Christine Marie Cabanos Hapi’s localized script is really down-to-earth and adds to her character more.

Thoughts on the “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure” English dub. Episode one.

hello again. this is going to be an interesting experience because while I have read all of Jojo I have not actually watched every episode. also when the dub was first dropped I remember just hating what little I heard of it apart from Patrick Seitz as Dio. I think now that the dust has settled and I’m over the fact that Jonathan and Joseph sport British accents its worth it to actually look at it and judge it appropriately. because let’s face it you can’t gauge how a dub is by watching three short clips from it

I also think its going to be good going back to Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency because honestly PB is very underrated within the fandom and while I still think BT is the weakest plot wise it still contains some of my favorite characters in the series as well as some very great moments. I am of the firm belief that you cannot skip Jojo parts. you cannot start with SDC, I don’t care if you think Hamon was stupid or find the idea of PB and BT boring. you have to at least watch this because otherwise you will not understand why Jonathan is so important, you will get none of Dio’s development as its all confined to PB, and you’re missing out on a large reason why Joseph is such a great character (he’s more than an old man shouting “OH MY GOD”).

I don’t think this is me being unfair. I’m not saying you have to go read all eight parts of Jojo within a span of a month or anything. I just think you should start from the beginning and progress forward. if you’re most excited for SDC or DIU that’s okay, but you can’t use them as a starting point because contrary to what some have claimed all Jojo parts are interconnected

anyhow let’s go

so its interesting that Dario of all characters is the first one to talk

he’s voiced by Steve Kramer, you know Wiseman from Sailor Moon and the Third Hokage from Naruto

his accent is kinda inconsistent, but to be honest I’m going to do my best to not nitpick everyone’s accent too much

holy shit is that Dio’s mom?

why isn’t she blond? I kinda always headcanonned her as blond. then again I should be happy she’s here at all

also I am trying to comb Jojo wiki, but I can’t find who voices her

he is played by Marc Diraison who was Guts in the Berserk dub and voices Ging Freecss in the HXH dub

okay so Jonathan and Dio sounding so old at the age of twelve, the Japanese version did the same thing and its weird things like this that kinda give the series its charm

same goes with them not looking twelve at all, Araki has never been good at drawing children so just roll with it

I like how fandom likes to claim Dio has no reason for being the way he is when that’s actually wrong. he hated his father for what he did to his mother and for keeping him in destitution because his drinking was more important to him, ironically some of his father’s hedonism still rubbed off on him
