I think about this tweet a lot and particularly, the idea of 'unnecessary'. How I interpret this tweet is that if this 'unnecessary gay character' isn't required to push the story, the plot, the themes or the relationships forward, that character doesn't need to be there.
However, I understand many viewers need to feel represented through that character, for whatever reason.
My question is, if the character could easily be cut out for, hypothetically, theatrical releases in foreign markets, isn’t that just tokenism?
I need to think about this some more.

Thumbelina (1994) was directed by ex-Disney employee Don Bluth. Warner Brothers, attempting to cash in on the fairy tale craze, tried to trick audiences in test screenings by showing the Disney logo before the film. The film was distributed by WB, sold to Fox and bought by Disney
Thumbelina attempted to copy the Disney formula so much, the producers hired Jodi Benson, Little Mermaid's Ariel, to voice her. Thumbelina is available to stream on Disney Plus. The Disney Junior show, Goldie and Bear, also features a different Thumbelina.

it was just announced that Kazuki Takahashi, author of the Yugioh manga and creator of that entire franchise, has passed away
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is a tragedy, but let it be said that Takahashi is an absolute legend. few people have shaped modern card game culture like he has. that alone would be incredible, but Yugioh itself as a series is incredible, too. this is devastating

A common trope in Bioware games is how a potential love interest to the PC has a dead spouse Examples: Jaheira from Baldur's Gate 2 Carth from Kotor Sky from Jade Empire Thane from Mass Effect 2 Steve Cortez from Mass Effect 3 Aveline from Dragon Age 2 subverts this trope.
in Dragon Age 2 thought that Aveline would continue the trend to being a love interest to Hawke, but her personal character quest involves her advancing a relationship with Guardsman Donnic. Hawke will not be able to romance Aveline in the game.

Encanto, a review
(Disclaimer: The following is a non-profit unprofessional blog post written by an unprofessional blog poster. All purported facts and statement are little more than the subjective, biased opinion of said blog poster. In other words, don’t take anything I say too seriously. I enjoyed all 5 Michael Bay Transformers films, for crying out loud.)
Just the facts 'Cause you're in a Hurry!
Ticket Price: Will vary theater to theater
How much I paid: Nothing. A family member of mine is a subscriber to Disney Plus and gave me her password.
Rated: PG for some thematic elements and mild peril.
Running time: 102 minutes (1 Hour and 42 minutes)
Post-Credits Scenes: None, but there are colorful animated credits to look at.
My Personal Biases: I don’t hate the Disney corporation, but doing things like implementing their Premier Access system and not putting out physical releases of certain animated series is starting to make me sour on them.
My Verdict: Encanto feels less like a complete film and more like an advertisement for an upcoming TV series. It has a cast, while individually interesting and distinctive, a bit too big to be given enough focus and songs that I didn’t really like (which is surprising, since I dug the Moana soundtrack). Also, I thought the decision they chose to end on really undercut the message. But, as a Holiday viewer, it’s fine. A film perfect for streaming.
Encanto, a review
Tumblr media
Look, I’m not one of those people with an axe to grind with the Disney corporation. It’s just that recently, with the numerous corporate acquisitions, the block booking, the editing out LGBT scenes for Chinese markets, the Premier Access program, they’re starting to get on my nerves.
Look, giant corporations will do what giant corporations do and if the suits up at Washington D.C. aren’t willing to enforce antitrust laws, what am I to do?
Anyway, here’s a review of Encanto, a film Disney released for free on Disney Plus on December 24th as a clear attempt to drive up subscription numbers for their streaming service in an attempt to compete with Netflix gesture of goodwill.
Forced by an armed conflict to flee her home, a young Alma Madrigal loses her husband Pedro but saves her triplet infant children: Julieta, Pepa, and Bruno. By a “miracle,” her candle attains magical qualities, blasts away their pursuers, and creates a sentient house, the "Casita", for the Madrigals to live in, along with a magical town sheltered by tall surrounding mountains—an “encanto”. Fifty years later, the candle continues to burn and the town thrives under its protection. The candle's magic gifts each member of the Madrigal bloodline superhuman abilities that they use to help the villagers. However, Bruno is vilified for his gift of precognition and he disappears 10 years prior. Meanwhile, Mirabel, Julieta's youngest daughter, is treated differently for mysteriously not having received a gift.
If I were judging the film based on a purely visual standpoint, I’d give it a hearty recommendation. It’s very pretty to look at, very colorful and all the characters are distinguishable from one another. As a animated musical standpoint, however? I was disappointed.
Pepa's youngest son Antonio is gifted the ability to speak to animals, and the family poses for a picture but neglects Mirabel. Mirabel suddenly sees cracks in the Casita and a vision of the candle's flame going out, but her warnings go unheeded when the Casita appears undamaged to the others. Mirabel resolves to save the miracle's magic.
Plot wise, the story boils down to: find out what’s wrong with the magic, go to next super powered family member who might know something, have family member sing song, see magic lose control, rinse and repeat. I’m fine with his simple story structure, but it’s clear who’s part of the main cast and who’s relegated to background noise.
That’s not to say that individual cast members such as Luisa or Isabela aren’t distinguishable from one another or don’t get developed, but it’s really obvious that characters such as Dolores, Antonio and others are pushed to the background to what amounts to a story focusing on Mirabel, Bruno and Abuela.
I may not be the biggest Tangled fan but that movie had the benefit on focusing on a select few characters.
I also was surprised how I didn’t like a lot of the songs here.
I’m not a Miranda-Lin Manuel groupie, but I remember I liked the Moana soundtrack quite a bit. Here, I liked maybe 2 songs, the first song and “We don’t talk about Bruno.”
youtube
Luisa’s song has really odd auto tune mixing and sounds odd to me. To be fair, Isabela’s song “What can I do” also had auto tune mixing but it wasn’t nearly as prominent or badly mixed.
youtube
But, I could have forgiven or overlooked all of that, had the film didn’t undercut its own moral, as in the message it spent its running time building up to, by that ending which is clearly meant to get audiences invested in a continuation through a sequel or TV series.
CAVEAT: I don’t hate Encanto, but it definitely feels like a soft launch for an inevitable animated series of shorts or episodes on Disney Plus. With an overstuffed cast of characters and 90 minute run time, it’s a premise that will benefit more from a longer run time.
At least Disney had the common sense not to ask subscribers to pay an additional 30 bucks just to watch the blasted thing.
VERDICT: Rental or watch on Disney Plus.
*SPOILERS*
Okay, Mirabel and Abuela’s fight causes the house to be destroyed and everyone to lose their magic. Mirabel runs away, only for Abuela to find her, explain why she was so strict and for them to come back together. All the family, and even some of the villagers, help rebuild the Madrigal home.
Then, the magic comes back and all the family members get their abilities back.
I didn’t like this endpoint because, it was at this point that everyone understood that they didn’t need superpowers to be special. Luisa didn’t need to be strong, Isabela didn’t need to be perfect, Bruno didn’t need to see the future. What made them special was just being themselves.
But no, Disney clearly wants to make a possible continuation, at the cost of undercutting the message.
It’s like if Thor: Ragnarok ended with them NOT destroying Asgard and just learned a valuable lesson instead.
