9 5 people you'd like to know better

My lovely mutual (@reikurusu) tagged me in this and it seemed a fun way to get to know each other better! I kept it at 5 people because I don't know who else to tag since I haven't been back on tumblr for very long yet and am still getting reacquainted with everything/everyone on here.

Last song: Love From The Other Side by Fall Out Boy. I just saw them in concert and this song has been stuck in my head day and night. I like it a lot, it's super catchy! Plus, the line "I'd never go, I just want to be invited" is such a banging introvert lyric.

Currently watching: I recently started watching the show From with my family, we're only on the first season still. It's very dramatic and dark, and we all like to try to guess what is really going on. We'll see how it plays out though, my sister is afraid it might go the way of Lost and get too convoluted and just overall too much. Some of the characters are kind of annoying me already, but I am mainly just watching it when my family is watching it so I'll probably stick with it as long as they are watching it.

On my own, I am watching Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion and My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 on Crunchyroll, while also just randomly rewatching episodes of Moriarty the Patriot (mainly The Two Detectives Act 1 & 2 because I love watching Sherlock and William work together).

Currently reading: Uh I guess, the manga for Moriarty the Patriot since I just finished reading volume 12. I started reading the manga after I finished the anime and didn't realize at first that the English translation isn't yet caught up to where the anime ends with The Final Problem, so now I am impatiently waiting for the next few volumes that come out later in the year.

Of actual book books (I know comics/manga are real books too but it has been so long since I read an actual text-only book that wasn't for school that it is worthy of distinction here), I just finished reading A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske. It had exactly the right mix of intriguing plot and romance that I crave (I can't read much stuff with just one or the other).

Also, if we are talking currently reading then of course I am also reading a stupid amount of fanfics all at once. I am currently rereading floriography by ashrivaille because Sherlock and William solving murders together is my current favorite thing. I ship them so much it's ridiculous (also Mycroft and Albert but that's a whole other thing). I honestly have a difficult time finding actual books to read that aren't fanfiction anymore because I am so used to getting exactly what I want from a story in fanfics due to filters (praise ao3's tagging system) and already knowing the world/characters. I find it difficult to get invested in other books and often find them kind of boring, or like flat? Could just be also because without the specific tags/tropes that are used to label fics, it is harder for me to find books I would be interested in since I'm relying only on plot summary.

Current obsession: Hmm I wonder....?? Yeah, no it's pretty obvious my current obession is Moriarty the Patriot since over half of the media I'm consuming is related to it lol. It's just so satisfying watching William set up these intricate crimes/plots and Sherlock deducing the hell out of them (and also to see evil nobles get what's coming to them).

My sister showed me this scale once on Pinterest where someone had placed character pairs from "be gay do crime" to "be gay and solve crime" and Sherlock and William were in the middle lol. Whatever genre that scale is seems to be my BRAND since the "solve crime" end was Kato and Kambe from Millionaire Detective (one of my fav animes), and while I don't remember what the one originally on the "do crime" side was I feel that Rei and Kazuki from Buddy Daddies fits well there (another of my fav animes).

Wow, this got so long lol. Gonna tag some people I think it would be cool to know more about, but no pressure! Feel free to ignore it if you want :)

i was thinking about the last chapter of fdh, and you mentioned how mare was more akin to red-gold sunsets...

i thought to myself "hm i actually don't remember why mare fell in love with cal...and i definitely don't know exactly why he fell in love with her."

lol if you don't mind, is it alright if you could discuss why my fav idiots love each other?

oh and adding on to my ask - it's obvious why mare was attracted to cal (does anyone need to explain more? just look at him! 😂), and vice versa since mare was definitely prettier than what evangeline ever gave her credit for (3 guys pining for her, like cmon!)

anyways...i'm just a tad more interested in the emotional aspects of their relationship hehe

damn right my girl was beautiful! Eve is really into high femmes though... so she was annoyed at Mare for not reaching her true potential lol

And bestie, I love you for coming to my inbox with this as it happens to be 👀 I was having a Marecal meltdown on Friday night, only my wifi dying saved you guys from my ramblings... but now you're here so let's go

I'll mention a few possible answers, then I'll give you my definitive answer.

A) looks, as in, they're both sexc mfs😏. I've read people say "their relationship was only physical", and I would agree that during RQ that's partly (70%) what kept drawing them closer and going to that dark room for the dance lessons.

B) Insta love. If there's a trope that makes readers all over the globe collectively roll their eyes, it's this one. Victoria even "admitted" on an Insta live last year that Marecal was a bit of an insta love and here is when I pull out my knife and tears fall from my eyes as I K-word VA for such a weird, mistaken interpretation of her own work. If Marecal was insta love, Cal would've chosen Mare at the end of RQ, Elara would have been fucked, and I would have DNFd the series on the spot. By the end of RQ they still weren't in love.

C) Their good qualities! Easy, reductive, a neat list, pretty for fanfic (I'm guilty of these types of 'virtues I love about you uwu' lists whoops) but ultimately unrealistic because nobody runs around falling in love with every virtuous person they meet.

D) All of the above. 🥴 well of course a romantic relationship told across 4.5 books is going to have a variety of reasons! we all knew that. that's not why I've been making you read this manifesto, pls don't boo me off the stage yet (yet)

My answer: They did not fall in love. they built their love by self-destruction and rebirth around each other. In other words, their respective character arcs pushed them together, and that's why as their arcs progress, so does their relationship and romance. It's not a point in the story you can randomly pick and say "here's the Oh moment" or a virtue Mare sees in Cal she likes and vice-versa. Mare did not fall in love with Cal because he was kind by giving her a few coins, or for protecting her in the Bowl of Bones. Cal didn't fall in love with Mare because she was a smartass when she tried to steal from him (we do love that joke tho), or for being so resilient when forced into the Mareena shoes. Did it all contribute to it? as I said, yes.

Most coming-of-age stories are about reaching the Truest self. And it is only within each other Mare and Cal can reach it. THE SOULMATISM. If I could pinpoint a single, ultimate reason for why they 💕fell in love💕, I could also create an AU, or a 5th book where it is possible to write a plausible reason for why they 💀fell out of it💀 and thank god I can't. Marecal remains superior.

I'll spare you the play-by-play of how their journeys are vitally connected bc this thing got out of hand. I hope I didn't bore you too much 💜✌

Why I ship Draco and Ginny?

Seriously nobody asked for this 😂 tbh this is just my Harry Potter and Drinny journey. Also this is just me posting something to start this blog with. So, here's how everything went down:

So before anything I want y'all to know that I started reading Harry Potter at like 14? 13? (don't remember exactly). I was given the first 3 books as a gift. I was instantly hooked and finished them all pretty quickly. And because I am a slut for grey characters, Draco managed a place in my heart even when I low-key hated him (In the first two books lol). He was interesting to me because I wanted to see where his story would go? On the other hand I already had a soft spot for Ginny since Sorcerer's Stone. I had older cousins who wouldn't include me in their stuff so I found her adorbs and relatable in the first book and my sympathy for her only grew in CoS. Book 5 Ginny though, was my fav Ginny because she really put Harry in his place and hexed Malfoy. She became one of my favourite side-characters along with Luna and Neville.

Despite my love for her, like most people, Ginny ending up as Harry's main love interest definitely surprised me. JKR did a good job of convincing me though. I accepted quite easily that Harry and Ginny were endgame but before embracing Hinny, I was a believer that Rowling would make Ginny Weasley end up with Draco Malloy.

Why?

Some might ask and God, I wish there was some proper logic behind this but for some reason, my 15 year old romantic self was sold on the idea that Ginny and Draco are going to be Romeo and Juliet of the Wizarding world?

No, I don't know why I thought like this 😂😂😂 It just made perfect sense in my head at that time for Drinny to happen, I do laugh now at how cheesy I was as a teenager. I just loved thinking about the wizarding world, imaging about other characters that weren't the trio.

Anyway, so this revelation of Drinny possibly being Romeo-Juliet happened during Order of The Pheonix, Ginny hexes Draco with bat-bogey hex and for some reason I was fixated on that particular interaction in the book. I used to imagine Draco being flustered that little Weasley had hexed him, it just gave me so much thrill thinking how annoyed he would be that a girl got the best of him, I imagined him being turned on while he was mad at her, or that he would eventually get attracted to her while trying to get back at her. I just imagined them having the enemies-to-lovers sort of relationship and it just made sense.

Now let me tell you when I read Harry Potter, I lived in a small town in Pakistan, not only was internet not easily available there, it never occured to me back then to actually search for the Harry potter fandom online the few times i did get a connection, so I had no idea of "shipping" or "OTPs" and I didn't know any spoilers. So yeah I used to create scenarios in my head where Draco and Ginny would meet in the Hogwarts corridors and they would argue and have intense sexual tension, or how Draco would want to take revenge on Ginny for hexing him and it would lead to them to having an angry shouting matches which would lead to make out session etc (Yes, I am aware we call these 'headcanons' but back then I was not familiar with fandom terminology).

Anyhow, I finally get my hands on Half Blood Prince Book and lmao remember the scene where Harry is spying on Draco, and then Blaise (or someone else? Idr correctly) brings up how hot Ginny is, I was losing my shit because I was like, why else would JKR bring this up in front of Draco? I was sure that she was building up a secret romance between Drinny behind the scenes because we see stuff happeing through Harry's eyes. Yes i was connecting dots of my conspiracy theory, or at least wishing that that is what was happening.

So y'all can now probably imagine how freakin' surprised and confused I felt when Harry got jealous over Ginny and Dean in the Astronomy tower? 😂😂😂 Like i did not see Hinny coming, it hit me like a wrecking ball... But ofcourse I accepted Hinny at the time because I also loved how tables had turned and now it was Harry who became obsessed with her, I also loved the whole "But she is Ron's sister, I thought I liked her as a sister, Ron will be so mad".

So anyway I go move on with my life and finish Deathly Hallows but ofc Harry Potter series felt like my childhood ending and I couldn't accept it. In my head, even when I had embraced Hinny, I still felt the love for Drinny and saw their potential, by this time I was finally allowed a phone. (Yeah I got a mobile phone when I was almost 16 😂) and while searching for random hp related stuff online I came across Fanfiction...

I started reading fics because I wanted to know what happened between the time when the war ended and when epilogue happened. I also wanted more answers about all the characters. However, I used to find most stories/character ooc, so I used to leave most fics in the middle and move on, very few fics could satisfy me because few writers nailed JKR's Harry.

Anyhow exploring the world of fanfics to read something that I actually like, that's when I was introduced to the giant that is dramione. Dramione introduced the idea of fanfiction deviating from actual books, so I gave them a try but then there were so many Dramione fics on Fanfiction.net but their fics pretty much very early on put me off of that ship, and then I altogether gave up on it because the disrespect to the Weasleys especially Ron was astounding to me. Also people turned Hermione into a mary-sue character in fics which also put me off. I feel like people dont know how to seperate Emma Watson from Hermione. Anyway that is a rant for another day.... So yeah, It was then when I randomly decided that maybe I should check out if anybody wrote Draco and Ginny fics and it was like magic 😍

ff.net had some great Drinny fics Some of them were post series, some of them during their Hogwarts years. Some were pure fluff others K I L L E D me with angst! I still have issues with fics where in order for Drinny to happen they show how bad/abusive Harry-Ron-Hermione are. I leave them instantly, or fics where Ginny is ashamed of being poor (i feel like she loves her parents and everything they've done for her) or fics where I find them ooc... but over all Drinny is a ship which has given me some great fics and those fics have helped me deal with personal stuff and cheered me up when I was down.

Also reading about them gave me an insight on how healthy a relationship between them can be where they can both provide each other with validation, comfort, love and passion.

Reasons why i think they work:

1) Ginny and Draco are opposites but they compliment each other rather than repel. Eg: Ginny and Draco both belong to ancient pureblood families yet the environment and ideology they grow up with completely opposite, their values are opposite even when their world is the same. That gives a lot of foundation for both of them to learn from each other.

2) Ginny is fierce, talkative /bubbly (Ron mentions how it's strange that she's quiet around harry because usually she won't shut up), stands up for those she feels are being unfairly treated (Luna, Neville), she's quite popular as harry realises in year 6 that she has her own friends, she even gets invited to the "slug club"... I think this works so well with Draco who hides his emotions, is under control of his feelings... He's also somewhat of a bully in early years which just goes so well because can you imagine how explosive their encounters would be in the great hall? Draco saying mean things to Ginny just to wind her up and her reacting and never backing down. I think Ginny is really one of the only ladies who can match him inch by inch and call him out on his bullshit. Maybe wind him enough to lose control even.

3) They both play quidditch, can you imagine the friendly rivalry? That is one thing they can bond over, they can also bond over their ancient families and their respective experience of growing up in wizarding world post voldemort... It can be similar and different. They really have the potential to be attracted like magnets. Sorry dramiones, but the angst and enemies to lovers that Drinny delivers... No other hp ship does it for me.

So yeah guys Drinny is my guilty pleasure and I think Draco and Ginny could have worked out really well as a couple but off course I understand that JRK wasn't writing a romance 😂. There is just so much to explore in their dynamic though and I am glad for all the fanfics and fanarts are out there because they really satisfy my curiosity and love for them.

The fandom itself. One too many times one can be called racist because of way I imagine a character or because of what character I like. WTNV as a show also changed, for much worse. Even after abandoning fandom I listened to eps but I couldn’t stand the romo, couldn’t stand voices given to characters, how gentle mysteries turned into each episode being turned into some intense events resolved by Power Of Love. I miss hooded figures. I even miss the old soundtrack. I miss Night Vale but it will never come back.

What Anime Are Most Significant for Your Otaku Journey?

I’ve been watching anime now for almost 35 years. Crazy, huh? But that’s not to say that I’ve been an otaku for that long—just as with many of you, my original viewing of the medium was as a youngster and without realizing the origin of what I was watching. It wasn’t until years later that I became a real fan of the medium, gobbling up a ton of series and developing a long list of favorites. But while some of those early series I watched aren’t included among my all-time favs, they remain just as important to me for how they shaped my view of anime and encouraged me to watch more. Some were mile markers on my anime journey, while others came in at critical junctures of my otaku life, times when I was on the verge of moving away from anime altogether. These are the movies and series I want to share with you today—not necessarily my favorites, but those that were turning points in my fandom.

I hope you enjoy taking a peek into my timeline, but more importantly, I encourage you to share your own list of anime that have been significant in your otaku journey. I give eight below, but feel free to present as many or as few as you wish!

1. Voltron

To be honest, I don’t remember Voltron that well (I’m speaking of the original series, not the more recent, critically acclaimed remake). But I do remember enjoying the show which, along with Speed Racer, was my very first anime series. I love-love-loved the series when I was a not-quite-ready-for-school kid, and I owned a heavy, metal action figure of Voltron to prove it. Of course, I wrecked said figure when I tossed it into the air to simulate flight. I still played with my Voltron a bit afterwards, but a missing leg mecha just didn’t do it for me.

2. Digimon Adventure

I felt very strange watching Digimon as a teenager—wasn’t I too old for cartoons, especially those obviously aimed at kiddoes? I wasn’t obsessed with the show—it was mostly background noise—but it became a gateway for me into fandom and obsession. A year or two later, I discovered fan fiction, and my favorite pieces were those involving the Digimon Adventure gang. I spent hours and hours reading AU stories from fanfic writers, and wrote close to a dozen of my own short stories. And thus, I learned there was more to anime (and all other pieces of entertainment) than just what was presented on screen.

3. Princess Mononoke

During college, I worked the electronics department of Wal-Mart, where one particular DVD stared me in the face day after day. I still didn’t really know what anime was at the time, though by this point I could tell that Ashitaka looked very different from the heroes of the animation I was used to. What really got me, though, was the tagline at the top of the release which declared that Princess Mononoke was the “Star Wars of animated features.” It made sense—after all, the cover featured Ashitaka in a fight, with his knife glistening like a lightsaber. I eventually caved in and bought it, and of course found that it was nothing like Star Wars…but I wasn’t disappointed, because the movie was more complex and beautiful and strange that I could have imagined, and I’ve rewatched it more times than any other anime.

4. Tenchi Muyo!

Everything changed in college because for the first time in years, I had cable, and with it, Toonami. Randomly flipping through channels, I came upon a show where a young, blonde pilot (Mihoshi) crash-landed into a Japanese lake, which at the time seemed to me to be a death scene (she survived). I was intrigued and started watching the show (and Cardcaptors, which preceded it) every chance I could get. For the first time, I realized that I was indeed enjoying this art form called anime.

5. Neon Genesis Evangelion

While it was Tenchi Muyo that really exposed me to the world of anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion is what convinced me that I was a fan. I did my research and decided to try out this series, which was accompanied by so much hype, and when I bought the first DVD, I was instantly addicted. Because of NGE, I decided to try out a plethora of other series, most of which I really enjoyed. Plus, it featured my first anime crushes—Misato and Rei.

The Evangelion TV series can be streamed on Netflix and purchased on Amazon, but at a pretty penny.

6. Spirited Away

Already familiar with Miyazaki by the time Spirited Away came to U.S. theaters, I was pumped to see his new movie in person. I knew it was being shown theatrically, but I was without a car and without the confidence or motivation to find another way to a theater. However, when my friends decided to go watch The Ring, I joined them, but upon seeing that Spirited Away was also showing at the cineplex, I traded time with friends for a solo viewing of this anime masterpiece. It was the first of many anime I’d watch on the big screen, and remains one of my very top movie theater experiences.

7. Kanon

As a young adult, I slowed my consumption of anime. I was in a relationship and spent a lot less time on my own and more time sharing entertainment choices with her—and she was not a fan of the medium. But eventually, after moving in with a roommate, I discovered that I had Anime On Demand as part of my cable package, and among the available series was Kanon. Again, I fell in love—not only with the show but with Key in general, and perhaps for the first time, I began to realize that anime had the power to really move my heart and even influence and change in my life. By the way, that girl I was dating later became my wife, and now watches more anime than I do. There’s a lesson in there somewhere…

8. Toradora

Babies are hard to care for. Really hard. When my kids were tiny, I would be up at all hours of the night, unable to fall asleep. To fill my time, I returned to anime after again leaving it for a while. I tried Toradora on a whim, and it became my favorite series, offering surprising depth to its characters while keeping those basic elements of anime that I held so dear. It both engaged me and made me feel like a kid again. It also encouraged me to write about anime. And with Beneath the Tangles, of course, the rest is history…
