If you remember the reveal on Grey's Anatomy that Dr. Sam Bello was a DACA recipient or Mateo's surprising backstory of being an undocumented Filipino immigrant on Superstore, you've seen a storyline that Define American has consulted on. The nonprofit, which focuses on immigrant narratives, is currently working to improve diverse storylines on television. While folks in the industry are working toward creating opportunities for diversity in front of and behind the camera, it's equally important that the narratives told reflect our world. In fact, Define American is just one of the many organizations doing the on-the-ground work to bring more accurate voices and lived experiences to the small screen.
On Roswell, New Mexico's second season, Define American worked with the team on nuanced storylines involving the complexities of seeking healthcare while undocumented and a harrowing experience involving ICE agents.
"We'll typically bring in several people with 'lived experience' with us," said Noelle S. Lindsay-Stewart, head of entertainment partnerships and advocacy at Define American. "It's important that whoever comes into those rooms has agency over their own stories and what they decide to share." Initial meetings with writers' rooms typically include an "Immigration 101" overview focusing on the types of misguided narratives that have historically been seen — both the hypercriminalized ones and the "worthy immigrant" (that is, the trope of arguing that a specific immigrant "deserves" good treatment because they're so smart/good/useful) narratives.
"The goal is to help writers tell these stories in all their complexities, without vilifying or sanctifying."
Fiction is crucial for educating audiences about stories they might not hear about — or might have misconceptions about — in the real world. Between the person-to-person connections and the resources the organization provides, the goal is to help writers tell these stories in all their complexities, without vilifying or sanctifying. For example, Roswell features an ongoing storyline about a Latinx family of mixed immigration status: father Arturo is undocumented, while daughters Rosa (Amber Midthunder) and Liz (Jeanine Mason) are American citizens by birthright.
"I feel a sense of relief," Mason said of having Define American consult. "I could feel confident we had all the resources to do best by this story," noting that she had previously worked with the organization on Grey's, where the storyline was "more about the subtleties of the legalities." As DACA recipient Sam, she had to explain on screen, for instance, that the "green card marriage" trope wouldn't work in that situation. As Liz, immigration colors a protagonist's storyline.
"I'm first generation, but my family's Cuban, so our immigrant experience is vastly different than the one people are experiencing right now. My parents were welcomed as asylum-seekers, my siblings and I all call ourselves Cuban-Americans . . . but there was never any doubt this was our home. Liz's experience is so contrary; there's such a pressure to be so quiet and delicate."
During a pivotal scene on Roswell: New Mexico, ICE agents who have been harassing Arturo throughout a health scare turn up at the Ortechos' diner. Liz is able to use the privilege she does have (as an American citizen) to push back in a way her father can't — which Mason points out is something we all can do: use what privileges we have to stand up for each other.
"It's only when [the agent] oversteps that she feels a need to check him, and that's her own privilege," Mason said. "It was satisfying to get to be disorderly for a second . . . to get to say the truth and claim back a little power from someone accustomed to mowing me and my family down."
When the show does venture into stories that seem familiar, Mason pointed out, it still works to add nuance. The character of Rosa, for instance, is a recovering addict, but, in context, it's just one part of representation.
"Rather than [being] taboo or for shock value, we approach it as something that can further a conversation," Mason said. "We have Liz, who's a scientist, and Kyle [played by Michael Trevino, a Mexican-American actor], who's a doctor, the two of them being Latinx best friends from childhood, top of their game, and it's not gawked at, it's just a simple truth. The beautiful thing about Rosa is that so much of the work we have to do is understanding this [addiction] can happen to anyone. To not ostracize it but to understand that talking about mental health is so taboo within our community . . . It was a really necessary conversation to have."
Immigration isn't the only issue being represented with more nuance on primetime TV today, thanks to the work of nonprofits. Planned Parenthood, for instance, has worked since 2016 to assist shows with depicting abortions.
"Nonprofits like these are crucial to helping writers tell stories that reflect the full spectrum of human experiences — and, in turn, helping audiences discover new ideas they might not otherwise encounter."
"Over 50 percent of people actually believe that the health care information they see on TV and film is accurate," Alencia Johnson, director of public engagement at Planned Parenthood, told Yes! in 2019. "Therefore, we need to make sure that abortion storylines — storylines about sexuality, love, relationships, birth control, whatever it may be — related to gender and reproductive rights are accurate."
Consulting on long-running shows isn't the only way nonprofits are working to redefine narratives in Hollywood, though. Define American is developing its own original content, often in partnership with established producers and networks, in order to help fill in the gaps of untold stories.
"We match the mandate the network is looking for to our message," explained DJ Reed, Define American's TV and film development manager. "We're trying to make an actual change. When we take meetings, industry folks are often surprised at our approach to the creative process, our deep industry knowledge, and the connections we have to immigrant communities across the country." Meanwhile, several nonprofits are called upon to help shows develop strong stories from day one.
"We are meeting with the networks and then reaching out to them and letting them know we are available. Big partners for us are the unions [like] the Casting Society of America's Committee on Diversity, the Screen Writers Guild, and SAG-AFTRA," Jennifer Mizrahi, CEO and president of disability advocacy group RespectAbility, told Vox in 2017.
"I can tell you in a very general way that if you are seeing LGBTQ inclusion on television, there is a very, very strong likelihood that GLAAD played a part in it at some point," added Zeke Stokes, vice president of programs at GLAAD.
Nonprofits like these are crucial to helping writers tell stories that reflect the full spectrum of human experiences — and, in turn, helping audiences discover new ideas they might not otherwise encounter. The team at Define American seems hopeful that there's room for all kinds of stories, covering the tough issues as well as lighter, aspirational stories set in worlds that are, perhaps, kinder than the real one.
"We need really consistent reminders of where we've been, but having something aspirational . . . we need things that give us hope as well," Lindsay-Stewart said. "We're helping more people feel seen while also bringing new folks into this conversation who have never been part of it before."
With so many organizations helping to bring so many voices to the table, it's looking more hopeful than ever that we'll be seeing more nuanced and diverse stories — and that's as exciting creatively as it is culturally.

Adaptability
Adaptability:
1. A pokemon ability that increases the power of moves of the same type as the user. Common species with this ability include porygon, basculin and eevee.
2. The ability to acclimatise efficiently and fast to changed circumstances
The umbreon tent at the Opal City Eevee And Evolutions Event is a good place to be, Go thinks, even though it’s early. The darkness means it’s refreshingly cool compared to outside, the ‘dark night’ coffees sold by the door are both delicious and immensely caffeinated, and the newly-evolved Instinct umbreons are sleeping (for once) in relative silence. It’s so early, in fact, that there’s only one other guest in this row. They’re pretty short, with red hair, lots of piercings and wait a minute-
“Uh, Amelie?”
Her eye flicks briefly towards him.
“Hello, Go.”
Oh. Great. He turns to look at what she’s eyeing.
It’s a good specimen from a show perspective, Go can tell. The eyes are bright and cheri-red, the coat ink-black and glossy, and the thick gold bands from evolving under a full harvest moon have a soft but powerful glow. It’s a pretty attractive pokemon for a team who deal in stolen goods, so Go braces for a knee to the stomach and hopes someone will call for security before he hits the ground.
When a minute has passed with no attack he dares to crack an eye open to look at her.
“Picking good ones to steal later? They’re all tagged and chipped you know-”
“No.”
“Planning to steal the prize money?”
“Not really.”
“Then why are you here at an eevee convention?”
She fixes him with a look and- oh.
He’s suddenly very glad Spark stayed behind. Arceus only knows the carnage that would result from him, her boss and hundreds of eevee all in the same place.
Anyway, Go, focus.
There’s no members of the public admitted right now, but there’s still a handful of breeders primping their umbreons before the gates open, and although he’s got over a foot of height on her Go doesn’t think for a minute that’ll stop him from being handed his ass if things get dicey. (Amelie did focus solely on his uninjured side when they met after the last big fight though, so that was… thoughtful? Less brutal than the majority of Rocket?)
The point is, it’s early, there’s no high-level trainers anywhere nearby and a member of Team Rocket is next to him at an Eevee Exhibition. So what should he do?
Go shrugs.
“Want to get breakfast?”
“So,” Amelie asks when they’re sat near a food stand fifteen minutes later, “Why are you here?”
He shrugs, chasing the last pieces of tamato berry around the tray.
“Some of the special entrants in the main exhibition are from Instinct Hatcheries, like that flying-type eeveelution, the dual-type vaporeon and, uh… Dumpling the shiny kit? Do you know about him?”
She nods and - wait, of course she’ll know about Dumpling, given who her boss is. Go’s certain that despite the frequent recorded visits from Mystic One on file at the kit’s hatchery, Leader Blanche themself has never actually set foot in the place.
He continues, regardless. “Because of the ties Instinct have with a lot of the organizers, we- as in, high-ranking Instinct Trainers – got special passes for the event.”
Go’s not entirely sure why he got one, really. Okay, yes, his name is down on paper as Instinct Two, but he’ll be the first to admit that compared to any of Spark’s Elite Four he’s way behind. Why is he here again?
He’s always been good at rolling with the punches, though, literal or otherwise. He’s adaptable.
(In this job, with his boss, you need to be. Otherwise you just might not survive.)
The theory goes:
A standard, purebred eevee with no external influences will evolve in accordance with its environment - one who lives wild by a lake and hunts for food in the water will tend towards vaporeon, habitats of warm homes as cherished pets create sylveon, those raised on spiritual sites or alongside psychics evolve into espeon (and everyone knows not to leave kits near the psychic Gym Leader of Saffron City unless, for whatever reason, you want a rambunctious feline unable to manage its considerable newfound strength back right after).
Even amongst the same species there are further physiological variations. The rare wild leafeon studied in arctic tundra environments have stubby near-black leaves with a waxy finish, slow metabolisms, and a secondary ice-typing. Amongst professional breeders and co-ordinators different leafeon with unusual foliage, such as delicate ornamental leaves or chubby cacti greenery, are a hit. The reigning Kalos Queen making an appearance even has an exquisite rose leafeon as her signature companion - far too finicky for the average trainer, too fragile for regular battling. And yet, much like a wild eevee and its evolution, it’s perfectly adapted for its current environment.
(Go figure, Go thinks as he takes a high-speed rose to the face at the front of the crowd, Amelie looking suspiciously like she’s trying to hide a smile).
But the environment is only half the puzzle. If exposed to a standard water stone, a wild eevee will undergo rapid evolution into what most would consider a ‘classic’ vaporeon – neck frill, aqua blue colouring, finned tail - even if its habitat is a frozen plain or an electrified cave.
So, as Annie had explained to him over one of the few dinners Spark or Zapdos (is there a difference, really?) hadn’t been able to crash and burn, the leading theory is that the eevee ignores its previous adaptations and rapidly adjusts in order to cope with a sudden influx of energy the stone contains - similar to how other species can go years with no sign of pending evolution but then once exposed to the right conditions, boom, a distressed golem is now stuck in your bathroom.
“Look,” she’d said, dragging out a tablet from her purse, “The main idea is the stone itself is a strong energy source – the eevee suddenly adapts to this exposure and the energy drives the evolution to completion in seconds, but because most of these stones are similar in chemical composition the final vaporeons are also pretty identical.”
Huh, he’d thought, so that’d been why Mystic had requested a large number of eevee kits a few months before, and why so many of their high-rank trainers had similar vaporeons on their teams now. He’d assumed it was just for the team aesthetic, really, but they must have been adopted out once the research programme had wrapped up.
Annie had continued, nearly knocking over her glass as she’d gestured at the screen.
“But then we’ve got to consider that items such as Razor Fangs and Claws are similar energy sources, or possibly catalysts. We now know certain stones and trading systems count as an energy source because of the thermodynamic profiles, but how does that link to items such as Reaper Cloths? Wild dusknoir and escavalier have to come from somewhere, Go!”
It had been interesting when he’d read over it later, after walking her home – or at least, back to Mystic HQ. Aside from cases such as nidorina and nidoqueen, Instinct typically ignore the evolution status of the pokemon used for breeding to focus mostly on IVs and moves, so browsing Annie’s notes had helped show a whole new side of the story, and they’re a lot easier for a novice to read than Leader Blanche’s, that’s for sure.
There was something similar to this topic in one of his college classes actually - a certain level of energy is required to allow a reaction to occur, catalysts open up different reaction pathways with lower energy requirements, if energy isn’t available from an external source then internal energy will be used instead, and so on. Currently known sources, according to Mystic research, include electromagnetic waves during trading, certain geological features, and – if the ongoing research on eevees is any indication - evolutionary stones as well. So now Annie’s research involves looking at possible wavelengths emitted, triggering the use certain items and further analysis of evolutionary stones. (He winces on Professor Willow’s behalf. Those items aren’t cheap, after all, and Go may no longer a completely-broke student but he won’t be casually dropping ₽10,000 on a stone that will never be anything but powder for a lab experiment.)
Annie always looks so animated when she talks about her research with Mystic One. Guess it helps to have a Team Leader who you really care for.
(Then again Spark, at least, doesn’t need constant reminders to eat or sleep.)
Speaking of which…
“Uh… Leader Blanche and Annie are supposed to be here today. Could you and your boss maybe not blow up the exhibition while we’re all here? Or start a fight? Or steal anything”
Amelie doesn’t even look up from the stall she’s examining. Out of all the locations to spend the morning at, personally Go wouldn’t have picked the shopping village – it’s not even ten in the morning now and it’s already a struggle to get through the crowds. Amelie, however, is both determined and terrifying - so here they are.
“Mystic One is currently at their headquarters having overslept. Mystic Two is with them.”
Well that’s not at all creepy.
“How do you know that?” He demands.
“Carl told me.”
“Carl, as in-”
That stuck-up dick? is what Go wants to say, but his mouth finishes, “-Valor Two?”
“Yes. We’re acquainted.”
Typical. All said stuck-up dick apparently needs to drop the snobbish attitude, even for someone like Team Rocket, is a terrifying attitude and an above-average bra size.
(That’s probably unfair, he reflects. There’s one key reason why the two of them will never get along and it’s five-foot-ten, host to a lightning titan and drinks Go’s milk straight from the carton.)
“It’s in everyone’s best interest for there to be no fighting today, don’t you agree? Three of each, please.” Amelie directs the last part at the hovering sales assistant, guarding the stock with the tenacity of a stoutland and the attitude of a houndoom.
Honestly, Go thinks, simultaneously watching the assistant bag all the items and trying to read the labels upside-down at the same time as they’re packed, Carl and Amelie knowing each other well isn’t a bad thing. Especially given the animosity between her boss and Leader Candela - and their combined talents at causing significant property damage.
“Limited Edition Eevee Family… are these socks?”
“Mmm-hmm.”
“You came all the way to a massive eevee exhibition… to buy yourself socks?”
He looks back at the packaging, the front home to a model in frills sporting sylveon thigh-highs and not much else.
Don’t think about her wearing them, don’t think about her wearing them-
Too late. It’s an amazing image though.
“They’re not for me. I’m here to get them for someone who couldn’t make it.” Amelie says, like she can read minds. Or maybe it was pretty obvious what he was (completely involuntarily!) thinking of.
Hang on, given that there’s one person he knows of who can make Amelie get up at the crack of dawn and wears eevee paraphernalia obsessively…
“So… your boss isn’t here today?”
There’s an unnaturally long pause.
“No,” Amelie finally says. It’s hard to tell with someone as serious as her but for a moment, Go thinks, it looks like she wants to say something more. “No, they’re not.”
“So you did come all this way just for socks?”
She shrugs.
“Lief is also thinking about breeding an eevee-cross meowth at some point, so he’s looking at possible studs as well.”
“Lief?”
“You’ve met him. Green hair, crossbred persians, kicked you in the face last month at the pier?”
Oh yeah, he remembers now. He really needs to try and run into people who are less violent, he thinks.
Amelie takes her receipt and turns to face him. “I’ll see you around, Go.”
“Uh, is it bad if I hope that’s not any time soon?”
He gets a whole smile for that.

SnK 111 Thoughts
Tumblr media
If this chapter doesn’t have forty pages of chibi Eren wandering through the woods asking where his nii-san is, what even is the point.
(The point is Drama.
Intrigue.
Fluid.)
Thanks, I hate it?
So yikes, we have a proper ballgame going and everything is awful leading into the ninth inning. It’s going to be extra innings with Paradis’ chief closer out of commission, up against their rival team. Truly one for the record books, people.
First thing is actually first, where the manga, in a fit of hysterics, gives me something I wanted: Numbers.
Over a hundred people have joined Eren’s side, deserting their posts. The suspicion is that they’ve done this out of the belief that the people with the power to rain down armageddon are maybe the safest shadows to hide under, and hey, with all the waffling their government has done about solving the problem of the whole world wanting them dead, why not?
For the larger groups, everything makes a simple amount of sense.
Eren has power, so people gather behind him.
Eren has power, so Paradis will yield to it for the sake of survival.
It’s a bit of a horrifying story, and one that I always take some joy in seeing. There comes a point where individuals have so much power where the only thing stopping them from changing the world however they see fit is their own boundaries.
Whatever Eren’s boundaries are, they’ve changed. He’s willing to kill children for the sake of his mission.
He is the most powerful card Paradis has, and without him, they have nothing.
Leaving them stuck doing whatever he wants them to.
It’s a similar tactic to the one he uses to drag the Survey Corps into his massacre; they need Eren, so they have no choice but to come support him in the choices he’s made as an individual. Everything else falls away in the face of the power Eren wields.
Yeah, the head of their government has been assassinated by his cult. Along with several other lives.
So?
Does that fundamentally change anything?
Does Paradis somehow need the Founding Titan less now that their command is facing disarray?
For a story so often pointing out that if you don’t fight, you can’t win, it’s pretty damn... something that the main character has all but removed the ability of a party he’s allied with to fight. They can’t resist him, and he knows it, and he’s exploiting it at his convenience.
Putting Zeke’s location on the negotiating table is cute, and a nice stall tactic in theory, but for all that Pixis says it’s not submission, Paradis is powerless.
If they don’t conduct rumbling experiments, they have no protection against the world.
They can’t conduct rumbling experiments unless they let the Yeager Bros come into contact.
If the Yeager Bros come into contact, they can do whatever the hell they want.
Which they have already been doing, so picture all of this, only more.
Pixis’ decision is really the only one he can make if he doesn’t want their people at each other’s throats. They can’t publicize how their one and only hope is willing to dismantle their government. They can’t publicize that they can’t trust their military to be acting in the interests that the government puts forth.
There’s a delicate balance here, with the balance being a complete lie because security has already toppled off and discovered that there’s no net below.
Their only prayer is someone swooping in and placing a trampoline down below before the crushing fall is completed, and there’s no guarantee of even that much happening.
If Zeke and Eren don’t want to help, no one can actually force them.
Zeke is one of two living humans in the world who can power the Founding Titan.
Eren currently has the Founding Titan.
They can’t kill Eren outside of a controlled environment, or else the Founding Titan will go who knows where. With Eren’s pile of abilities he’s nommed, fighting to subdue him will be next to impossible. With the added limitation of doing everything they can to avoid killing him?
Armin brings it up as a point of faith; if Eren has the Founding Titan, it shouldn’t matter what Zeke wants out of it.
Eren now has a cult who doesn’t blink twice at assassinating key government officials. Even if it doesn’t matter what Zeke wants, what Eren wants, or is at least willing to put up with, is heavily alarming.
“No, no, we’re not submitting. We’re negotiating.
What do you mean the only thing we have is something we’d have to hand over anyway to get what we want.”
Like.
Hell, man, talk the good game all you want to keep morale up, but you people and your entire society now rise and fall at the whim of a man who has put no effort into making himself look trustworthy.
So, you know.
Ganbatte.
Other special numbers include thirty soldiers + Levi standing in between Eren and Zeke once Eren finds Zeke, Hange, and three unnamed soldiers who are either about to be very dead, very traitor, or the coolest NPC badasses ever.
Meanwhile, Eren still has a hundred.
Just trailing around after him.
With bombs.
Considering Eren could kill most all of those people (except Levi and Hange) without help, I repeat the theme of this post that Paradis is so beyond screwed it has actually become laughable.
Another fun thing of note that only I care about is that even if Eren can’t get to Zeke, he might be able to get to Historia, and Nile appears to be in charge of her security.
The reason only I care about this is because Nile is in charge of her security, and Nile has been fed the story of Historia and NPC Farmer Guy being totes in love 5evr.
(NPC Farmer Guy has no name and no face. I declare him Red Shirt-san, and also reallllllly fucking dead. Especially if my crack theory of the carriage from last chapter rushing off to Historia was correct, meaning that Pieck, theoretically having tracked the carriages, is going to pay the Queen a visit.
Bye Nate.
(his name’s Nate your canon is invalid))
Briefly defending my descent into self-interest, Historia getting zero panels and barely any hearsay about her is driving me nuts for all sorts of reasons.
Two people (count them, two), in the entire world, are capable of drawing out the power of the Founding Titan. One of them is an untrustworthy dick. The other is Historia.
Historia, when last seen under extreme emotional duress, was of the opinion of, “fuck humanity titans did nothing wrong.”
As we can plainly see from her expression at the end of 107, there is nothing but blue skies and happiness going through her boundless considerations of humanity now, and she is most assuredly, definitely on their side as all of her friends ditch her in the middle of the woods and never visit or mention any concern for her except that one guy who has taken up murdering children, and he possibly did that in active defiance of concern for what problems it might cause her.
What could possibly go wrong.
There are about three people who hold the fate of Eldia in their hands, and we know what none of them are thinking. They also all have a much more casual relationship with murder than most of the rest of the cast.
What I’m trying to say is that Paradis your politics are boring because your livelihood hinges on three catastrophically emotionally damaged people, and all of the story’s energy is going towards keeping those people away from thought bubbles or general illumination.
If Historia, Eren, and Zeke decide that you guys die............ you die.
You possibly should have invested more in strategies that weren’t so entirely dependent on renegade children following orders.
Okay okay, enough pointing and laughing at the futility of government in shounen. Mikasa! How you liking your entire page of dialogue! Does it feel good? Does it make up for the gaping hole Eren being a nutcase is causing?
Of course it does!
I don’t know how I feel about Kiyomi, but I am glad that her relationship with Mikasa is so obvious in its self-interest. Mikasa isn’t being yanked around; she knows this person caring about her blood hasn’t translated to caring about her people.
Whatever Mikasa’s genes, Paradis is her home, and she considers herself as Eldian as anyone on it.
What’s interesting in that conversation is that Hizuru is still doing what it can to avoid being an ally of Paradis. They’re letting this one clan mess around, but unless results can be produced, the whole scheme is dead to them.
...
You know. Paradis had better start hoping that there’s still some massive secret to the Titans, because with the current knowledge available, they are just... so incredibly screwed on so many different levels.
I’m inclined to think that Kiyomi wanting Mikasa safe is one of the few shreds of honesty she has left. I’m an optimist. A child connected to the days of honor long gone... hey, it’s a romantic concept, even conniving foxes can have one last hurrah in them.
But also, Mikasa just doesn’t deserve people piling more lies on her.
A promise to protect someone calls to her heart. I’m sure Mikasa has thought those words to herself many times; whatever happens to Paradis, her priority has always been her family. Not a blood family, like Kiyomi holds on to, but one bound to her with ties of steel.
Only now her family is at odds.
Mikasa might care more about her family than anything else, but in practice, she’s a compassionate, responsible young woman. She can’t turn her back on the world just because her family has. She’s going to bleed herself dry trying to do the best for both of them.
That’s not a happy thought, because even if Mikasa, with all her strength and ability, fights for anyone in this conflict with all her heart, the concept of winning is a far off dream. Her supernatural gifts don’t make the world turn. Her gifts simply mean she might survive when everything around her explodes.
Yuck.
And also hey, Connie, I love you man, but you turn those angry eyes away from Mikasa pronto.
Then we’ve got the many trials of Nicolo.
Featuring Gabi and Falco.
...
I don’t wanna. I can skip this part.
Uggghgghghhgh.
Hell, this is a lot faster than I thought this disaster would come out, and it’s a lot grimmer than I really want and in general just ow.
Nicolo is a prisoner of war. He is allowed to cook. He finds light in cooking for people like Sasha. He’s Marleyan, and Eldians are devils, but being around them, his heart softens to them, and his role becomes something more complicated.
As a soldier, fighting the demons of Paradis is just what you do.
As a person, fighting people like Sasha, Jean, and Connie...
With a heavy heart, he can hand off laced wine to their superiors. He can continue to operate as a soldier fighting against Paradis. But the very thought of Connie and Jean being caught up in that sends him into a panic, and he falls back on racist rhetoric to cover it up.
Rhetoric his heart isn’t even in anymore, because more than killing, Nicolo finds himself in cooking. In bringing people happiness.
And Gabi killed the person who shows him that. The person who gave him solace from the hell of war.
It doesn’t matter that she’s a child, or a Warrior Candidate, or anything but the person who killed Sasha.
She cares about Falco’s life. That comes to stand as another condemnation of her. She knows what it is to care about someone? She’s valued enough that this boy is willing to jump in front of a blow meant for her?
Did she think the person she killed wasn’t?
It’s destructive and awful, and Gabi finally has a defense for herself that isn’t just brainwashed rage at the island. That girl? The one she shot? That’s the girl who shot someone she knew. Guards who watched over Warrior Candidates training, in charge of penning up Eldians, but they were still people Gabi saw a home in.
She can’t justify the loss of Sasha, but she can justify shooting back, especially at someone who just clubbed Falco in the head.
But she’s still just a brainwashed child.
Tumblr media
Sasha’s father watches two people, profoundly touched by his daughter, ripping each other apart because they’re in pain. Sasha changes Nicolo for the better. Sasha and her path in life is what’s breaking this child.
A child is calling his daughter a devil. She’s been brought into this conflict and all she sees is the enemy, and the good there must be in fighting that enemy.
Gabi doesn’t even try to fight back when Sasha’s father holds up the knife.
She’s bleeding and in tears, and for one of the only times, she isn’t reacting with violence. She’s just a stunned little kid, wondering if the people who’ve fed and housed her on this island of evil are about to kill her. Like she killed the daughter they loved so much.
Of course the man who raised Sasha doesn’t lay a finger on her.
Of course the man who has to physically hold down his child to try to force her to stop eating so she won’t die of starvation later understands how hard the world is.
Horrific things have happened.
He isn’t going to bring one more into this world.
And Gabi... from the very start, she’s been the most passionate about becoming a Warrior. She’s going to follow in her cousin’s footsteps. She’ll commit war crimes, she’ll take on a death sentence, she’ll do whatever it takes. She’s a Warrior.
She’s a kid.
She doesn’t want these kind people to hate her.
Kaya reacts the same way Gabi has to everything so far. She charges in with the only weapon she can find, trying to kill the problem because the emotional strain of what’s actually going on is too big for her young heart to take.
Kaya, who really has been kind. Who’s the reason they’re here. Who’s been trying to get her and Falco home.
Kaya’s in tears, and Falco’s unconscious and bleeding.
All because of what Gabi’s done.
Nicolo sees the same thing.
That’s why he comes clean.
The world is such a cruel place.
They’ve got to spare the beauty where they find it.
I’m not going to touch that plot bomb, because the manga can do it for me in future chapters. Zeke having a bunch of government officials drink his spinal fluid is honestly on par with every other thing he’s done, so. One more point to the Paradis Screwed column.
So last word goes to Mikasa.
I mentioned in the chapter where Louise and Mikasa talked that Louise had seen Mikasa’s strength impact her life, but completely missed the kindness behind that strength. Mikasa is terrifying as a soldier. She’s cold and relentless.
As a person, she will ask the child who killed her friends to see her wounds, and hold her close to keep another child from hurting her.
Mikasa is kind.
Gabi has met so many good people on this island, and all of them are in tears.
It’s funny and sad that Mikasa and Armin take her into the back room to calm down. For all their lives practically, they’ve been looking after a reckless wild child who gets into fights they have to finish for him.
Gabi is as driven and passionate and full of anguish as Eren as a child, and now she’s with two of the people who know that.
Armin and Mikasa might not know how to help Eren, but they can help this little girl.
And Mikasa can keep another little girl from knowing what it’s like to knife someone in the back because they killed someone you love.
Welcome to Emotions.
Where everything is absolutely awful except maybe the people feeling them.

The fundamental philosophy is that suffering is inherent in life and that one can be liberated from it by cultivating knowledge, advantage, and focus. My advice is don’t attempt to do all of it and to combine a few popular temples with quieter, less well-known ones that you can get pleasure from without the crowds. An extant instance of the syncretic fusion of Buddhism and Shinto is Seiganto-ji, a part of the Kumano Sanzan shrine advanced. The design of the buildings and even the thatch roof are extremely developed for this. When there are rains, the thatch roof will get heavier, weighing down the wood joinery and making it water-tight. In the dry season, it gets lighter and the gaps between the wooden are allowed to breathe again, avoiding mildew. These are wood plaques in which you'll write your needs and then grasp them to be received by the god. Do You Know Enough About Moissanite Engagement Rings?
An engagement ring is one of the most precious things that symbolizes the most memorable moment in our lives. You don’t need nor give a thought about them until a certain point in life. But when that moment arrives, you can’t resist but dream about buying the best engagement ring that you can. An engagement ring is of such significance as it bonds two people emotionally. It is the beginning of an exciting new chapter filled with commitment, shared dreams, and future. What’s more exciting than this?
There is a huge variety of engagement rings available in the market with exclusive designs. Many are studded with rare gemstones on gold, silver, platinum design. It’s entirely upon you what kind of engagement ring you choose which matches the preference of your “soon to be” life partner. You might think of going for the diamond-studded ring but other great alternatives are equally exclusive as a diamond ring. And also very affordable from the price point of view.
Moissanite – What It Is?
You can discover moissanite by accident, and it still never fails to impress you right away. It is much popular now than it was before. This incredible gem has caught the attention of a wide variety of people from the entertainment industry to the general public. You can find your favorite celebrity wearing a moissanite ring which you can mistake as a diamond ring because it is a diamond simulant made of silicon carbide.
Moissanite, known as the most durable crystal structure, has been quite attractive to the scientific eye ever since its discovery. Unlike other synthesized gems, moissanite does not exactly simulate diamond but still surpasses it in many ways. Due to its fierce sparkling, luster, twinkling, and brilliance, scientists said it was “born from the stars.” These features make moissanite a gem that is comparable to no other gemstone on earth. It has the potential to withhold its optical properties even for the coming 100 years from the moment you buy it. So for those who say “a diamond is forever,” you have other options like moissanite which is going to last for a very long time.
Moissanite – Comparable To None
A higher refractive index amounts to higher brilliance emitted by the jewel. Moissanite’s refractive index is 2.65, which is considerably higher than sapphire, CZ, diamond, and other stones, thereby making it the most delicate gemstone on earth. Moissanites fire is more than twice that of a diamond and hence make moissanite engagement rings even more impressive. Moissanite has high clarity and low inclusions irrespective of the shape and size, whereas only 10% of diamonds have this feature while all others fall behind. The magnitude of the light reflected by the observer gets termed as luster. Moissanites have 50% and 18% higher brilliance than CZ and diamond, respectively. Moissanite engagement rings shine and sparkles in such a way that it leaves behind none without attracting their attention. So you have a gem that is not less than all other sparkling, twinkling gems.
Why Choose Moissanite?
There are many reasons why one should go with moissanite rings as their best option while selecting an engagement ring. Compared to its alternatives in the market, the moissanite ring is cost-effective and offers much better endurance and beauty. So instead of shelling out a hefty amount on buying a diamond ring buying a Moissanite ring have high durability as they last, literally, forever without losing their brilliance and fire. What can be a better option to symbolize your love? Moissanite engagement is forever, hence it is a perfect engagement ring for couples made for each other.

Jerry Lewis, you’ll jamais walk alone
youtube
Since the American media agenda looks to be waterlogged for the rest of the week, it might be “appropriate”, faute de mieux, to revisit the recent passing of Jerry Lewis. For my money, the greatest contribution Jerry ever made to comedy was to inspire Martin Short’s deliciously malicious SCTV parody, “Jerry Lewis, Live at the Champs-Élysées”, shown above, during which, among other things, an aging, out of touch Jerry subjects a bewildered French audience to a harangue directed at the damn kids running Hollywood who won’t back his genius, finishing the show off with a bellowing rendition of “You’ll Jamais Walk Alone”, the quintessence of audience-whoredom condensed, really, into a single word.
And for those of you kids in the audience, who don’t know from “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” let me explain that that song, from Rogers and Hammerstein’s Carousel1, was the quintessential inspirational throat-catcher back in the fifties, the idea being that if you have faith in your heart, you’ll, well, never walk alone. Marty/Jerry’s substitution of “jamais” for “never*, as an unwittingly condescending gesture of cultural outreach to the crowd—like a gentile saying “mazel tov”—struck me as a touch of comic genius when I first saw the bit back in the early eighties.
My contempt for Jerry is really quite strange, because when I was little—when I was little little—I loved Jerry Lewis. “Martin & Lewis” were to me the most exciting three words in the English language. I loved their movies—even better than Francis the Talking Mule!2 Even better!—and was agog whenever they appeared on the “Colgate Comedy Hour” on TV. I looked forward to Jerry’s first solo film, The Delicate Delinquent (1957), with immense anticipation and was stunned when it proved not merely unfunny (completely), but frightening. The film shows poor Jerry in his standard role as the helpless schlemiel/shlemazl,3 bullied by a “gang” into becoming a member. Later, however, Jerry turns the tables on his tormenters, becoming a cop and self-righteously beating the crap out of them in an extended, vicious scene that clearly allowed Lewis to take revenge on his demons.4
I never watched another Lewis film again for a good thirty years. I frequently saw him on TV and never found him funny, at all. Instead, I found him needy, overbearing, and compulsively unsubtle. Back in the late sixties and early seventies, I used to read the Sunday New York Times—then a publication of vast bulk—with bizarre dedication—an ineffectual response, I suspect, to my own demons. In the entertainment section, the Times would run ads for the once-famous Jewish resort hotels in the Catskills. The most famous was Grossinger’s, but the “Concord” was also huge. The Concord was Jerry’s preferred venue, and the Concord would run quarter-page ads featuring a head shot of Jerry, not laughing Jerry, but a ridiculously worshipful shot that made him look, basically, like a god, a showbiz god, which is clearly how he saw himself. And I would wonder, who in God’s name would pay good money to watch Jerry Lewis? When I saw Marty’s pitiless takedown, I found it perfect and justified in every detail.
I stumbled across Jerry’s The Bellboy, the first film he directed, on TV sometime in the early nineties. It’s an “interesting” film, though not funny. Lewis made the film because he owed the studio a film, though they were not at all happy with the results. Jerry plays a bellboy, “Stanley”, in a very explicit nod to Stan Laurel, his standard s/s character once more, but also appears as “Jerry Lewis”, the show biz monster he’s proudly become. Is Lewis saying “God I wish I was still that sweet, helpless little kid I used to be” or is he saying “Look at me, folks! I’m HUGE!”
Later, out of curiosity, I watched Jerry’s most famous film, The Nutty Professor, and tried to watch The Patsy, said to be his favorite of the Dean and Jerry pics, and also Artists and Models and Living It Up, and even some of their old "Colgate Comedy Hour" shows, when they became available.5 Sorry, folks, nothing. Nothing but trying way too hard. It’s hard to say if Jerry was the white Sammy Davis, Jr. or the other way around.
Carousel, not quite as well known as either Oklahoma or South Pacific, was still a huge hit or the boys, and a stunningly inspirational tear jerker in its own right. ↩︎
My Aunt Sally, who loved the movies, and who, I suspect, loved to hear me laugh, took me to all these films. The only two I remember specifically were Jumping Jacks (1952) and Francis Joins the WACs (1954). ↩︎
According to Yiddish “lore”, the schlemiel is the waiter who spills the soup; the shlemazl is the one he spills the soup on. ↩︎
Was Jerry beating the crap out of Il Dino? It’s the obvious guess, but I really have no idea if Jerry felt exploited by Dean. ↩︎
M&L apologists claim that the movies never captured the boys' anarchic genius. You had to see them on TV! You had to see them at the Copa! Sorry, guys. I never made it to the Copa. ↩︎

Interview: Blake Andrews
Tumblr media
This month’s featured artist is penonomen. A street photographer from North America!
Be sure to follow penonomen and support his work!
Full name.
Blake Andrews.
City and country where you live.
Eugene, OR, USA
How you started with street photography?
I began as a photographer by taking a basic darkroom/shooting class in my early twenties. From the start I was drawn to the candid/documentary method, and at the time I was living in a dense urban neighborhood, so I suppose my photos fell under street photography by default. But I didn't learn about that label until later. There was no internet. I knew few other photographers, and I had very few photographic reference points beyond the local library. I was basically making photos in a vacuum. I think that ultimately worked to my benefit and allowed me to find my own voice without the influence of too much outside chatter.
Why street photography?
As I just wrote, it was mostly out of circumstance. The phrase "street photography" is still an awkward fit for what I do. Basically I carry a camera everywhere and I'm always looking for photos. Sometimes they look like street photos. Sometimes they don't.
Tumblr media
You are an iN-PUBLiC member, a very street photography focused collective, how did that happen?
Back in the early 2000s, In-Public had an open submission call on their home page. I sent them some photos, they liked them, and I was invited to join.
If you could mention an advantage and a disadvantage of being part of a photography collective, what would they be?
One advantage is that In-Public has opened some doors for me in terms of recognition and opportunity.
The disadvantage is the same that applies to most groups of any reasonable size. With a wide range of opinions regarding decisions, consensus, and general photographic philosophy, the result is often group inertia.
Tumblr media
What and/or who inspires you?
Frank Zappa, river floats, Helen Keller, Helen Prejean, coffee, Samuel Mockbee, Beck Weathers, animal magnetism, alleys, Heraclitus, the Iditarod, Ferlinghetti, spring blossoms, Sonia Sotomayor, Thomas Merton, serendipity, Alex Honnold, Gordon Parks, peach brandy, mosh pits, Nina Simone, Gandhi, The Golden Gate Bridge, viewpoints, Sarah Ruhl, Euler, James Turrell, Sandow Birk, snowboarding on powder, Jenny Holtzer, Andre Breton, long drives at night, Sam Rodia, Kathleen Hanna, Richard Pryor, adventurous children, hail, John Zorn, Vaclav Havel, a nice skyline, and that time of year when I can first begin wearing shorts regularly. Which is right now.
How often do you go out to capture moments?
With the exceptions of sleep, sex, and CIA assignments, I always have a camera and I am always looking. In fair weather I try to get out once or twice a week to walk for a while with the specific aim of finding photos. A few times per year I make trips to larger cities for several days of concentrated shooting.
Tumblr media
Obviously having kids is not stopping you from taking photos, it only adds to the photo opportunities. Ever thought of assembling some of your family photos in a show/book?
Every year I make individual books of each son and my wife composed of work prints in small portfolio binders. These are just for us, not for public consumption. I went through these books in 2015 to create an exhibition of thirty family photos, which showed last year Blue Sky in Portland. I was pretty happy with how it turned out. We made a Magloud book for the show which contains some of the less controversial images.
It seems cold environments are not your type of thing. Do you take less photos during winter? If so, how do you “cope” with this?
It's not so much the cold (Eugene rarely gets below freezing) as the constant winter drizzle here, and the shorter days with less available light. Those two factors limit my opportunities, but I make do. I spend more time printing during winter months, although I never fully abandon shooting. Even in winter I'm making a constant trickle of photos, just smaller volume.
Tumblr media
I couldn’t help but noticing you said finding photos and not taking or making, I guess this has to do with your keen observation towards things. So, why not make, take, steal, or whatever?
It's just a matter of semantics. All those words amount to roughly the same thing.
What do you look for when you go out on the streets?
I look for material not just on the "streets" but other places too. I know it sounds like a cliche but I never know exactly what I'm looking for. I think the best answer might be that I don't care as much about subject matter as I do about photographs. When I look for material, all I care about is how it can be presented photographically, which leads me to emphasize formal qualities. I try to keep other concerns out of it.
Tumblr media
And while you think about the singular shot you are finding, do you also consider a bigger picture? Meaning a project, book, show, series, call it whatever you like? Please explain.
Generally, while shooting I try to keep the bigger picture out of it. For me it complicates the process. So while I'm shooting I try to concentrate just on what's in the frame. Then what's in the next frame, and so on. Later on there's plenty of time to think about how they might fit together, or else ignore the need to think about that.
Do you interact with your subjects?
Rarely. I am an introvert. I observe. If I'm in the right mood I will sometimes get aggressive and photograph confrontationally. Sometimes that can be fun but for me it rarely results in good photos. I am better at seeing things when I can hang back and tie elements together at a remove.
Tumblr media
How do you challenge yourself to improve on photography?
Part of the joy of photography is that the word "improve" is ambiguous. By conventional standards improvement tends toward a certain perfection of visualization and execution which I think can be very stagnant. Is Beyonce an improvement as a singer over Malkmus? By most objective standards she is, but that's why "improve" is a delicate word. Beyond the aesthetic questions there is the purely physical world. I'm 48. My reflexes are slowing and my feet can no longer support me all day without suffering, so my body is definitely not improving. As for my seeing, I'm not sure if it's improved over the past few years. But what maybe has improved is my sense of myself and what I want to say photographically. I'm more patient, and receptive to fate, chance and whim, all of which are components in an improved sense of being.
Tumblr media
As for technique, mine hasn't changed in 25 years. I walk with my camera ready and try to pay attention. This generates a steady flurry of photographs.
How would you describe your own style?
My style is a blend of personal diary, street photography, and zen koan, with particular attention to formal elements, and less emphasis on evidentiary recording. That said, I try to avoid any style. I'm terrified of becoming associated with one photograph or one way of seeing.
Tumblr media
Terrified? How so? You do seem to have some recurrent elements in your photography, at least from what we can see in your archive.
Maybe terrified wasn't the best word to use. What I meant is that I want to consciously avoid falling into any trope or style. My ideal is to approach every photo op fresh, on its own terms. Obviously, this is tough. There are recurrent elements in my photos, as you point out. But as I get older the toolbox gets bigger. Maybe eventually it will cover everything.
Is hard not to notice your attention to details, playing with different elements in a photo to create visual games, like a light pole becoming part of the street lines or a fence becoming windows of a building. Could this be a style? Or maybe a branch of it.
Yup. Those photos are definitely stylized. That's what I want to avoid.
What is photography for you?
At this point it is pretty integral to my life. It's with me every day like eating or sleeping. I sometimes envy photographers who can isolate photography from their daily lives. They might make photographs for a special trip or project, then return to normal living. For me there's no separation. That is fun and vital in some ways, but occasionally overwhelming. In any case I don't have a choice in the matter. It's just the way things are. Building webs all day must be a hassle but spiders never complain.
Tumblr media
Spiders don’t complain, other insects certainly do. How do you mix family time and photography? Some photographers have a hard time doing so. How does your family feel about it?
Everything gets mixed together evenly. But honestly my family is pretty sick of me shooting them by now. And I don't shoot them as much as before, generally because they're older and more self aware. When they were young and acted out of pure instinct with no filter, that was a very special time for me to shoot them. Now my oldest is in high school. So that time is fading.
What is your personal definition of street photography?
Candid photographs made under fluid conditions, with the emphasis and goal on the photograph in and of itself above other concerns (reporting, conceptual, project, etc).
Tumblr media
Through photography, what have you learned about yourself in the last year?
This winter I've begun experimenting with shallow depth of field using an f/1.4 lens wide open. This is an odd development because aperture is such a basic tool, one of the first variables you learn to control as a beginner. But somehow I plunged ahead early on into the habit of always shooting at small apertures. I think this is fairly common in street photography, because a large zone of focus is helpful in fluid situations. But it can lead to static results. So I've had fun switching gears and rediscovering the joy of wide open winter shooting. What has this taught me about myself? Seasons have meaning. Don't ignore seasons. Same reason you don't eat pears in February.
These types of challenges are always interesting especially when you are very well used to something else. How come you started doing this slight but rather important change?
It was mostly a product of finding an old SLR on eBay. I set it up with my old f/1.4 lens and quickly became hooked. Winter is generally the time these experiments happen. Summer is too busy.
Tumblr media
What are your future goals with photography?
I'm a photographer. There is no future. Only this 1/60th second.
If you could have a conversation with ANY photographer for an hour, which photographer would you choose and why?
That's a very tough question. Probably Vivian Maier because she's such a cipher. I've seen a lot of her photographs, and the film about her, and various books. But she's still a complete mystery to me and to all of us. I have no idea what she was like as a living breathing person. So an hour with her might help fill in some of the blanks. It might be fun to talk with EJ Bellocq or Mike Disfarmer for similar reasons.
If you could go back in time, what piece of advice would you give yourself to take some shortcuts here and there based on your experience?
I'd probably tell my younger self to organize my archive better. It is a bit cumbersome to manage as it's currently structured, and sometimes hard to locate negs. One easy change is I'd mark up contact sheets and make better notes on film sleeves. That would be a gift to my future self. Then I'd tell myself to go outside and play. Young people belong outside. Or falling into crushes.
Tumblr media
How much of your time is spent taking photos vs editing your work?
Way too much. I need to stop shooting and spend a few years editing what I've got. But I enjoy shooting much more than editing. So, oh well.
If you could more or less sum it up to a sentence, what could you advise about editing/selecting your own photos?
I used to have a mantra on my website that summed it up well: Use right brain when shooting, left brain when editing.
What gear do you use? Philosophy: Digital or analog?
No comment. No philosophy.
B&W or color? Why?
I shoot mainly B/W because it allows me a degree of formality, abstraction, and removal from reality. Sometimes I shoot color using Instax. No good reason beyond simplicity.
Tumblr media
What about post processing/developing?
I'm a control freak. I shoot my own film, develop my own film, and print my own film. When I print in a darkroom it's fairly straight without much dodging/burning unless the image really requires it. As for Instax, that's easy. It develops itself into prints. If the color is off it's beyond my control, which is just one less thing to worry about. I use a scanner only to put jpgs online, which is fairly rare these days.
For you, what are the advantages, other than being in control, of printing your own photos? Do you print only the keepers or you print more and then edit?
I make a workprint of any negative that looks remotely promising. Usually that's as far as the image gets. If I still like it after making a workprint, I file it in one of the special boxes. The main advantage of being in control is that if I farm out my printing, someone else is gonna fuck it up. Of course I'm not perfect. I have fucked up plenty of prints myself. But the odds of them turning out how I like are better when I'm in control. Plus the darkroom is kind of a fun ritual.
Tumblr media
The selected picture (first picture on top).
I shot the photo at Pompidou Centre in Paris a few years ago, and it's a good example of how I like to put a frame together. The picture seems to describe a scene with a seated person capturing a floating disc on his computer screen. In reality the two discs are flat stickers on a pane of glass between me and the scene. So the photograph is a confusing translation, or maybe a flat out lie. I don't mean to imply that my photographs are all about visual tricks. But I like to use visual ambiguity to convey a sense of discontinuity or absurdity, which is consistent with my Existentialist/Zen/Jewish/DarkHumor worldview.
Street Photographers on tumblr you truly admire.
I generally don't look for street photography on Tumblr. My sense is that Tumblr is in remission as a showcase for individual photographers, whether street or other styles. I suspect Tumblr itself will probably be dead within a few years. Most of the sites I still enjoy on Tumblr are feeds curated by third parties. Of this group thephotoregistry.tumblr.com is really in a class of its own. This is the new site of mpdrolet.tumblr.com, which was stupidly deleted by Tumblr. It provides a stupendous variety of interesting photography in a carefully cultivated sequence. I also like semioticapocalypse.tumblr.com, apanelofanalysts.tumblr.com, and bremser.tumblr.com.
What are some other projects you are currently working on?
My main project for the past several years has been finding different excuses not to make a book.
Where can we find you?
penonomen.tumblr.com
instaxgratification.tumblr.com
blakeandrews.blogspot.com
in-public.com
Wikipedia
Google
Any advice from your personal experience?
I would suggest that photographers ignore all rules about photography. Rules generally lead to problems. When a teacher comes at you with a rule, run the other direction as fast as possible.
The other suggestion is to create a broad inner life. Photography can be an insular community. I think it's healthy to branch outside for inspiration. Read books, see films and art and live music, talk to non-photographers, etc. These influences may turn up in your photographs later, in ways you don't expect.

It’s a Nice Day for a White Wedding (Chapter 2)
Brienne took a deep breath of the crisp morning air, savoring the northern sunrise. She had initially been hesitant about taking the spring term research position in the far north. It was an incredible academic experience no question, but she’d be a thousand miles from her friends and family and Jaime...
Jaime had put his foot down. He refused to be the reason she missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime, working with her academic idols. He’d practically ordered her to take the job, and he’d been wearing a suit at the time and he knew how she felt about him wearing a suit...
Brienne shook her head. The spring in Hardhome had been incredible. And even better, she’d been offered a summer job on an archaeology dig at the Fist of the First Man! She had been waiting to tell Jaime in person when she saw him—he’d been flying up on weekends. A year out of college, Jaime was now working at his father’s corporation and loathing every minute of it. But at least it gave him ample free time for his still-in-college girlfriend.
Just then her phone buzzed. It was Jaime, and she felt a burst of happiness in her heart just seeing his name.
Whatever you do don’t take Cersei’s call. Or any call. She could be spoofing the number.
Uh okay. That was... odd. But Jaime had a tendency to get a little paranoid where Cersei was concerned.
The phone rang. It was Jaime.
“Hi Jaim—“ Brienne began.
“That was a test wench! You failed! She can spoof any number, even mine! Do not, repeat DO NOT, answer the phone!” Jaime scolded her. “Actually, you know what? Turn your phone off. It’ll be safest that way. I’ll see you at the airport this afternoon and explain everything, I promise!”
“You’d better,” Brienne managed with a sinking feeling. “I won’t talk to you all weekend if you’re going to be weird.”
“Trust me, you’ll thank me. Love you.”
“Love you too,” Brienne sighed. And then she turned her phone off. Because she did love him, even when he was being weird.
She had finished her morning research and decided to go for a run on the outdoor track during her lunch break when she heard it. The impossibly loud roar of a chopper touching down on Hardhome University’s baseball diamond. Brienne clapped her ears over her head and stared as the sparkling white chopper gently set down, clouds of brown dust swirling toward home base.
Brienne squinted. Did the helicopter say “Lannister Corp” on the door? The door swung open and a slim woman with waves of gorgeous blond hair stepped out. Oh.
Cersei Lannister delicately placed her designer heels down in the red clay, and even from a thousand yards away, Brienne could see the small grimace as the dirt puffed around the ankles of her navy three piece suit.
Cersei was Jaime’s twin sister and the most beautiful person Brienne knew in real life. She had a movie star glow to her that had always left Brienne somewhat tongue-tied in her presence. It didn’t help matters that Cersei was also completely terrifying.
Brienne was never sure if Cersei actually liked her. Honestly, she wasn’t sure if Cersei actually liked anybody except maybe Jaime. But Cersei approved of her, and Brienne was constantly petrified that someday Cersei might change her mind. Because Cersei was someone you would much rather have on your side than not.
“Brienne, darling!” Cersei had spotted her and waved.
Keenly aware that the every last member of the  exercise-during-lunch crowd was staring at her, Brienne pasted a smile on her face and walked over to embrace her.
In addition to being five five to Brienne’s six foot two, Cersei was built like a bird and Brienne had her usual moment of anxiety where she thought if she squeezed too hard she might break her.
“You look amazing,” Brienne blurted, keenly aware that sweat stains were visible through her gray t-shirt.
“For now,” Cersei sniffed. “Has Jaime told you?”
“Jaime hasn’t told me anything,” Brienne said, suddenly remembering his cryptic warning.
“I am pregnant,” Cersei said, with the grave expression of someone sharing a terminal diagnosis.
“Congrats?” Brienne ventured cautiously.
“At any moment my entire body could balloon to twice its size,” Cersei continued grimly.
“I don’t actually think that’s how pregnancy...”
“We are working against the clock.”
“Wait we?”
“Yes Brienne,” Cersei suddenly caught her hand, her enormous green eyes shining softly.
“I have to marry Robert in the greatest wedding the world has ever seen and nobody can realize that I’m pregnant. I have just over two months to put together a ceremony and reception for five hundred people and I simply can’t do it without you.”
Brienne swallowed, eyes frantically skittering anywhere but Cersei’s plaintive gaze.
“I don’t know anything about party planning,” Brienne managed.
“But I do. And I need someone I can trust to carry out my orders to the letter,” Cersei squeezed her hand. “Brienne, will you be my maid of honor?”
There was nothing else for it. Brienne squared her shoulders.
“I would be delighted,” she said firmly.
The soft doe-eyed expression on Cersei’s face immediately gave way to an expression of brisk efficiency.
“Excellent,” Cersei let go of her hand and wiped her palm on her pant leg.
“I have taken the liberty of having my assistant upload the wedding calendar into your personal calendar. I will have her email you the spreadsheet of relevant vendors, and I’ll expect you in Oldtown for the dress fittings next week.”
“Oh I can’t,” Brienne said. “I’m leaving on an archeological dig on Monday for a month.”
“Oh no you’re not doing that any more,” Cersei shook her head.
“You don’t know what I’m talking about,” Brienne said uncertainly. “I haven’t told any—“
“Dr Benjen Stark’s expedition. You were offered the role two weeks ago,” Cersei looked impatient. “Obviously circumstances have changed. I’ve arranged for you to be a research assistant to Archmaester Marwyn in Oldtown this summer instead.”
“Archmaester Marwyn?!” Brienne goggled. “But he doesn’t even take undergraduate applicants! I don’t even have a focus in his field of study!”
“My father helped him out with some nasty business in the Citadel once, he was happy to return the favor. Is field of study an issue? He promised to add you a co-author on his article regarding lost books of history, but if you’d prefer to concentrate on history north of the wall, I think you’ll find him quite... flexible. He’s very brilliant you know. He can write on just about anything.”
Brienne stared at her. To be an undergraduate co-authoring an article with the greatest living historian in the world?! But she wouldn’t really be co-authoring the article, she reminded herself firmly. It would just be her name slapped on some piece of scholarship she’d never even seen. It was academic perjury, plain and simple.
“Absolutely not,” Brienne said firmly. “I really appreciate the opportunity, Cersei, truly. And I’ll talk to the leader of the expedition and see if I can take a weekend off to help with wedding stuff. But I’m going on this dig with Dr. Stark.”
“Oh Brienne,” Cersei smiled gently. “The expedition has been cancelled.”
“What?!”
“Well deferred really. The funding was pulled. I’m sure it’ll be available next year if you still want to go.”
Brienne opened her mouth. And then shut it. Deep breaths. Deep breaths. You can’t shake a pregnant lady. Especially one who weighs like ninety pounds wet.
“So you see, the move to Oldtown is really for the best,” Cersei continued blithely. “Will you be a dear and help me with my luggage. I need to let the helicopter get back to King’s Landing before my father notices I’ve borrowed it.”
“Luggage?” Brienne managed. “You came to stay with me?”
“Of course! It’s not like I know anyone else in Hardhome,” Cersei cast a blatantly unimpressed look around. “Would you believe this school doesn’t have a single helicopter pad?”
Yes.
“How were you going to find me? What if I’d been away?” Brienne answered a little impatiently.
“Jaime said you’re training for a marathon and run at the track during lunch. I tried to call your phone but you weren’t picking up, so I thought I’d just find you here and tell you the news in person,” Cersei tossed her hair. “I thought we could spend the weekend creating a vision board. I’ve heard the air is purer up here so you think more clearly. It’ll be fun! We can get up six, do some yoga, have some tea. I’ll work on the guest list while you go to the library and pull the last five years worth of Vogue magazines. We need something that fits their aesthetic if we want to be featured, but of course it has to have the originality and flair that my public has come to expect.”
“Jaime’s coming this weekend,” Brienne said, perhaps a trifle sulkily.
“Well I should hope so! We’ll need someone to run out and get us salads while we’re haggling with the vendors.”
“I only have one bed,” Brienne said.
“Oh you’re sweet to worry. I’ll take the bed, you can take the sofa, and Jaime can sleep on the floor,” Cersei patted her hand.
“You wouldn’t be more comfortable in a hotel?” Brienne tried one last time hopefully.
“Don’t be silly, I’m staying with you,” Cersei beamed at her. “You are my maid of honor.”
“Cersei’s going to ask you to be her maid of honor, and whatever you do, you must say no,” Jaime blurted the moment he saw her at the airport gate.
Brienne bit her lip. Even slightly rumpled looking, he was absolutely dreamy and he had tried to save her from this madness. He was her knight in shining armor, and if she had to manage a thousand crazed Cersei Lannisters, he would be worth it.
“Oh gods, it’s too late,” he groaned when he saw her expression. She nodded glumly.
Jaime kissed her and as she melted into him, feeling his arms around her, she dared to allow herself to hope that things would be alright.
“It’s going to be a disaster,” Jaime said when they broke the kiss.
Or not.
“My sister has many charming qualities, but she is also a micro-managing control freak with delusions of grandeur. I can think of no woman less temperamentally suited to be an easy-going bride.”
“I know.”
“Also she doesn’t have enough friends to fill out her side of the bridal party. She already made Robert cut his in half and she’s still short. I hope you have blackmail material on somebody because that’s absolutely going to be your job.”
“I know.”
“And Robert?! Have we mentioned Robert?! Wench, he’s going to be my brother-in-law! You know how I feel about Robert,” Jaime groaned.
“I know,” Brienne rolled her eyes at that one. She personally thought Robert was sweet. Sort of boisterous and messy and loud and high-energy, but sweet. Like a golden retriever maybe.
“Don’t roll your eyes! He is the WORST!”
“I thought you thought Ned Stark was the worst,” Brienne laid her head on his shoulder.
“You’re right. Sanctimonious shit. He is the SECOND WORST! Why does everybody like him? Why does everything work out for him? Am I crazy?”
“Yes,” Brienne said soothingly, brushing his hair out of his face. “But I love you anyway.”
Jaime exhaled slowly.
“Wench, I’ve missed you,” he nuzzled her neck. “Why is it that everything feels so much more manageable with you around?”
“Because we’re a team,” Brienne said immediately. “And together, we can handle anything.”
“Even an apocalyptic wedding that will doom us all?”
“It won’t be that bad,” Brienne laughed.
“Perhaps you’re right. We should discuss after we’ve had passionate dorm sex. Things always seem brighter after passionate dorm sex.”
“Oh,” Brienne swallowed. “About that.”
They exited the airport to see Brienne’s car idling in the pick up zone. Cersei pushed her sunglasses down.
“Do hurry up Jaime, we’re losing valuable daylight. Brienne and I will need to sun tan for at least forty-five minutes each day to get a gradual even glow while minimizing skin damage.”
“Oh no,” Jaime froze.
“My skin doesn’t really tan,” Brienne tried to push back her. “Also it’s fifty degrees out.”
“You can still get a suntan in the cold,” Cersei waved away the objection. “We can drink some hot water with lemon, you’re sounding a little strained. I need your voice sounding good for the big speech.”
“Speech?”
“Oh don’t worry, I’ll write you a little something. It’s important for all the speeches to run on theme. Jaime, don’t just stand there!”
Brienne glanced back at Jaime who was still standing forlornly in the sliding door, ignoring it as it slowly opened and shut on him.
She doubled back with a sigh.
“Cersei’s taking the bedroom. We can have passionate dorm sex tonight on the couch as soon as she falls asleep,” Brienne promised, linking her arm with his. That at least got him moving.
Only they couldn’t. Because after an exhausting evening of sun bathing in the freezing cold, shivering over mugs of hot lemon water, applying facial masks and teeth whiteners, and watching a romcom that was nearly ruined by Cersei inexplicably rooting for the villain, Brienne was finally allowed to retire to the sofa where Jaime was already passed out. She had kissed him awake and then giggled as he pulled her closer, sliding his hands up her sides, his eyes glinting dark green in the moonlight. She could feel him under her as he shifted, and she had missed this, missed him, and nothing could ruin this moment.
A blood-curdling scream cut through the night, piercing her very marrow. Okay, well some things could.
Brienne kissed Jaime apologetically and got off of him with a sigh.
“Cersei?” She knocked on the door.
There was another scream. This one sounded angrier. Brienne sighed and pushed her way in.
“That moron! That drunken boorish oaf! That obnoxious belligerent idiotic man child!” Cersei snarled.
Brienne blinked.
“What did Robert do now?”

Crypto Twitter (CT) is a grueling battleground between digital currency enthusiasts, company executives, maximalists, journalists, lawyers, and so-called thought leaders and luminaries. For instance, on May 8, reporter Larry Cermak posted data concerning Blockstream and its sidechain project Liquid’s performance over the last seven months. After Cermak shared unbiased figures and queried an alleged conflict of interest, the Blockstream account instantly blocked the journalist.

Liquid’s Lack of Traction Sparks Intense Crypto Twitter Debate
CT is a wonderful place so long as you toe the maximalist party line, sing kumbaya, and tell everyone how great BTC is on a daily basis. Because if you don’t repeat these values, you just might be designated persona non grata. This week on CT, the founding partner at Adamant Capital, Tuur Demeester, tweeted about Blockstream’s latest Liquid announcement and said the sidechain “could become a DTCC for Bitcoin.” In response, The Block analyst Larry Cermak shared data concerning Liquid’s overall performance in the last seven months.
“So far, in its 7-month history, Blockstream is barely gaining any traction,” Cermak replied. “Liquid has had 61,700 total transactions and is currently capitalized with $313,000 from the net value of less than 400 peg transactions.”
Demeester responded: “Let’s wait until tx fees on the main chain spike again.” The following day, after Cermak posted his tidbit of publicly available data, he found out he was blocked by the official Blockstream Twitter account. “This is pretty pathetic — Yesterday, I posted data that showed that Blockstream’s Liquid isn’t doing well (so far) after being live for 7 months,” Cermak tweeted. “Literally I just posted publicly available data and I got blocked by Blockstream’s official account.” Blockstream’s chief strategy officer, Samson Mow, claimed he was the one who blocked Cermak “because he’s a moron.”
Questioning a Conflict of Interest Apparently Makes a Reporter a Moron
So did Blockstream decide to block an analyst for posting data? Well according to Blockstream employees it was really because Cermak publicly asked if there was a conflict of interest between Blockstream, Adam Back, and Samson Mow sticking up for Bitfinex.
“Why are we not talking about Adam Back and Samson Mow, two of the most visible employees of Blockstream publicly siding with Bitfinex given that Bitfinex is an early investor in Blockstream?” asked Cermak. “The conflicts of interest in this space are something else” The Block analyst continued, adding:
What’s the issue with this, some are asking? — And at this point, it seems that the only people siding with Bitfinex and Tether are shareholders or somewhat involved.
Crypto Twitter rules are as follows: “All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.”
The Block’s Frank Chaparro asked why simply asking a question brought out all the pitchforks. Blockstream’s Adam Back replied that “It happens to be untrue, however, which I confirmed for another journalist who asked privately about the claim.” Back continued by stating: “Simply the quote ‘It’s because Bitfinex invested in Blockstream’ is untrue, and did not fact check. You don’t have to fact check, but stating as fact untrue allegations is not that cool.” Back seems to think Cermak should have asked people FUDing Bitfinex, and that his defending of Tether was simply him just refuting “publicly known FUD as a public service.”
The story continued as maximalists decided to harass The Block for accepting $25K in funding and allegedly not reporting on Coinbase objectively in an attempt to flip the story back on the publication. However, after defending the news outlet, The Block CEO Mike Dudas disclosed that the company would return the funds to Coinbase. Quite a few crypto supporters thought that Blockstream was wrong for getting upset with Cermak’s objective data and his valid question. After all, a good number of people on CT have already been questioning Blockstream’s seeming conflict of interest.
Moreover, the anonymous owner of Bitcoin.org, Cobra, detailed that he was also blocked by Blockstream for questioning them. He remarked that when Coinbase and Bitmain were catching flak from the community they never blocked people and he insisted that members of “Blockstream are delicate snowflakes.” Cobra is also known for questioning Blockstream when Back showed support for Halong Miners, a startup accused of simply buying Innosilicon miners and applying Halong stickers on them for resale.
The thought police on CT are starting to look no different than the pigs in the famous Orwell novel Animal Farm. The social media platform is filled with teenage angst, confirmation bias, and groupthink, and is no different to the archetypal high school groups that thrive on immaturity and bullying.
