very interested in how the storyline of ronan's sexuality is developed in the dream thieves as a battle between kavinsky and gansey while adam is almost never present in these scenes, which makes it even more interesting that we found out in CDTH that ronan was set on adam the moment he saw him. i think that ronan is attracted on some level to both gansey and kavinsky (you can draw the lines of how much romantic intention you think he hold towards either of the yourself, that's a rabbit hole I would need a whole other post to go down) but more so I think he was attracted to the IDEA of both of them and certain qualities that each possessed, and that the real question wasn't does ronan want gansey or kavinsky because we know he wants adam but rather who's qualities resonate more with who ronan is, or who he is choosing to be at this critical moment in his character development. kavinsky is a dangerous thrill and often comes wrapped in ronan's other favorite self destructive attempts to outrun himself, while gansey is ronan's history and proof of his deep capacities for loyalty and love. he tells kavinsky it was never going to be me and you and that it's not going to be ronan and gansey because that was never the question- maggie was obviously always planning on bluesy and pynch. the answer to who ronan WANTS in adam. the question of who ronan IS- that's what he's trying to decide here. his self hatred is such a heavy weight on him and theme in tdt, and the kavinsky/gansey dichotomy represents the the path he will choose to take to deal with it- keep try to drive faster than his demons or accept that he can still be loved even if he isn't the person he once was. the dream thieves my beloved ronan lynch my beloved

Other people have said it already but I love how to anyone who’s only read TDT Adam is Just Some Guy and he’s completely batshit. He’s lying about everything. He collects depressed gay people. He doesn’t answer a text. He rides for eight hours on a motorcycle he doesn’t know how to control listening to sociology notes. He’s faking tarot readings. He’s scrying in basements. He’s tracking beetle activity in Cambridge. He hates Declan. He’s breaking up with his boyfriend’s soulless body. He’s driving to Connecticut to find his boyfriend’s unconscious pet raven. He hates himself. He is obsessed with money. He’s a mechanic. He has a Virginia accent. No he doesn’t. He’s an asshole. He will literally lose himself in the sea of unconsciousness to vibe with the energy of his otherworldly boyfriend. He is polite to the evil entity that wants to kill him. Every time he’s alone he tries to talk himself out of loving Ronan and it never works. He has a secret job with the American government. Without taking his eyes off the sky he takes the ring and puts it on. Why is Ronan obsessed with this guy.

the dreamer trilogy makes my artist heart very happy. it talks about art in metaphor — dreaming being a metaphor for creating art and dream objects being a metaphor for artwork — but it also mixes in so much art history AND has literal artists, jordan and hennessy, creating, for the first time, work that is Theirs. making, not in an effort to copy great work, but to create great work themselves, for themselves. one of the Points to me is about who artistic creation — in any form — is for and Why we continue to create. it’s declan collecting art, art that makes him want to goddamn cry, and putting it in his attic, just for him, just because. it’s ronan loving light, creating balls of light that just float around, for no other reason than his love of light. it’s hennessy’s “of fucking course” waking up the mouse. it’s jordan painting declan. it’s adam’s dreamt watch. it’s the mirrors that show your honest self. it’s all of it, all of it.
there’s something to be said about the fairy markets, these exclusive, somewhat dangerous, dream black markets, being a metaphor or representation for the institutions of the art world. because that really is what it’s like in so many ways. the fairy markets are taking something magical, pure, and creative — dreamt objects that are made by dreamers simply for the joy and horror of creating — and turning it into a commodity, something that is inaccessible to most and must be hidden away behind barriers and armed guards.
the dreamer trilogy says so much about the value of art and art objects. their ability to reflect their creator. the necessity of art objects not just for artists but for other makers, for everyday people, for the world and for our culture.
I LOVE ART, I LOVE THESE BOOKS!

I think it is mentioned several times in the Raven Cycle (though it's been a year since I've read the book so I could be wrong but bear with me anyway) that Adam has bouts of anger he doesn't understand, and this is yet another reason why he and Ronan work so well together. Ronan knows what that kind of unexplainable anger against the world feels like, whereas the other characters don't. He feels it too and he understands, and for that precise reason he doesn't hold this anger against Adam or respond with anger of his own. He knows on a deep, intimate level what it's like to feel so overwhelmed by anger and he acts as a pillar for Adam's anger. And it's really important that he doesn't lash out, because Adam is already so accustomed to violence that he couldn't be with someone whose first reaction to anger is returned violence. Ronan, who is so sharp-edged with everyone else, is so gentle with Adam while not treating him like a breakable or broken thing, and they fit so well together I can't

I wrote a giant Raven Cycle analysis
Hi! Over the last year or so I've been working on a sort of essay about various themes in the raven cycle series, and I finally finished it a few weeks ago.
It is titled: "Why I love The Raven Cycle - An excessive analysis of the themes of friendship, queerness and growing up".
And since tumblr loves its meta (and bc I love peer validation) I've decided to start uploading it bit by bit here, making this the masterpost (if I can figure out the logistics of the linking lmao, bear with me)
(beware of spoilers up to greywaren starting at like 3b!)
Introduction
What even is the Raven Cycle?
Trust me, the characters are queer as fuck and I can prove it a) Blue Sargent b) Gansey c) Adam Parrish d) Ronan Lynch e) Noah f) Henry Cheng g) Honorary mentions
The Gangsey is a polycule
Analyzing the reoccurring themes a) Friendship b) Being a teen/growing up c) (Found) Family d) Magic (as a metaphor) e) Further themes I appreciate
Drawing a conclusion
Click here to start with the introductory parts!
1. Introduction
So here’s the thing: I love fiction almost as much as I love my friends. There’s something deeply comforting about the escapism, even if the book actually makes me want to scream and throw it on the floor (only one book has been thrown so far, I promise!).  Fiction is a healthy thing to occupy my thoughts with: headcanons! Quotes being on loop in my brain! Just fandoms!
And for me, if I am hooked on a book (series), it does not even need a good plot where a lot of things happen. In fact, I would say that my enjoyment of a book is made up of 30% plot and about 70% characters and vibes. If the characters are bland, if they do not make me feel much emotion, it likely won’t be more than 4 stars (additional info: I am way too nice rating books!). I really, really need to love the characters, to be able to relate to some aspects of them, or it just won’t become an obsession.
Since I have already started explaining that a bit, let’s look at this question: What is important to make a book special to me? 1. I need to cry reading it. 2. I have to think about it often, even weeks to months after having read it. 3. Obviously, I need to love the characters. 4. I need to be in the fandom! This can be hard with some books, but the internet is a whimsical space allowing you to find at least a small number of people who are obsessed with a work of fiction to a similar extent as you are.
Now, why am I elaborating on this so much? It’s because The Raven Cycle did all that for me. It is my favorite comfort book series at the moment, for all those aspects mentioned, but of course I cannot just leave it at that. No, I wrote a whole-ass analysis on headcanons and some of its themes. You’re welcome.
2. What even is The Raven Cycle?
The Raven Cycle is all I adore and live for (next to my friends). So, naturally, it’s a book series, specifically a four book young adult contemporary fantasy series by American author Maggie Stiefvater. The books in question are: The Raven Boys (2012), The Dream Thieves (2013), Blue Lily, Lily Blue (2014) and The Raven King (2016), and yes I will admit that the publishing dates are a bit of a red flag. There is also the very relevant follow-up series called The Dreamer Trilogy (Call Down The Hawk, Mister Impossible, Greywaren), but it’s a lot less easy to get into that here as I do not know these entire books by heart, so I’ll stick to the original tetralogy here.
To stick to red flags, the books are set in the fictional Henrietta, a rural town in non-fictional Virginia, US, in the 2010s. However, that doesn’t really say *that* much about the plot, so let me summarize that really quick, because I can do better than the official synopsis! (Or let’s pretend I can.)
Blue Sargent comes from a family of psychics, yet she does not have any powers of her own. Even worse, she is a bit of an amplifier for the others, meaning she is always somehow but never directly involved in the business. As if that isn’t enough for an identity crisis, every psychic she has ever met has told her that her kiss would kill her true love. Yikes.
But because she is that amplifier, she comes to a church watch on St. Mark’s Eve, where psychics see the spirits of those to die within the following year. It’s important business, but to her it’s really just staring into the dark. Until she does actually see a spirit: That of Gansey. Of course this is not a coincidence. No, to add to this teen’s mount of problems, there are only two reasons why a non-seer would see someone’s spirit: They are their true love, or they killed them. Or, in Blue’s case, maybe both.
The aforementioned Gansey is Henrietta’s Golden Boy, the son of politicians (read: he’s fucking loaded). He does not run with the Republicans though, he runs with dead Welsh kings, meaning he has been searching for the probably dead, presumably sleeping Welsh king Glendower (*1350; †1416; yikes) for the past like seven years. Why the fuck would he do that? Well, legend says that he will grant a wish to whoever wakes him, and our favorite PTSD-ridden guy really wants that favor.
Aiding him are fellow Aglionby students Adam Parrish, Ronan Lynch and Noah Czerny, plus Henry Cheng, though only a lot later in the series, but I really did not want to leave out that menace (affectionately) here. The paths of Blue and the boys cross because of Gansey’s search for Glendower, plus the fact that Blue works at a popular pizza place, but that’s a lot less whimsical. And, well, there’s the implication that Gansey might also be her true love, but perhaps she just kills him because of his bad fashion sense, it would be justified. Anyway, in true Famous Five fashion (Ronan is the dog; I won’t elaborate, the girls that get it, get it) they are of course not the only ones searching for the king, so it’s not completely a wholesome friend bonding activity all the way through.
Be prepared for: friendship and growing up, lots of treasure hunting, family mysteries, magical forests, illegal and slightly distasteful activities (our favorite of course), but most of all, heavily queer-coded (or even canonically queer) characters. Be Gay, Do Crime.

WIP Wednesday 💭
here's a snippet of my declan outside pov of pynch (set of vignettes exploring declan's trust of one adam parrish)
Text from Ronan I need a ride to church
There were two baffling things about this text from his brother. One, Ronan texted him. Also, Ronan texted him without profanity, a middle finger, and with more than one letter. Declan often found the ever infuriating letter k more often than even a response from his brother. The second unknown was why Ronan was willing to spend time in the Volvo with Declan driving. Anytime they did have to travel together, Ronan was quick to explode in profanities about Declan’s A-safety rating driving habits before threatening to throw himself out while they were cruising at a respectable 65 on the highway.
Declan immediately thought the worst. He must have totaled the BMW. He tried calling Ronan once, twice, but gave up before the third time with no answer. He tried texting, knew that was useless, but tried anyway. No answer. Typical. He could feel the acid creeping up his throat, the anxiety of having to deal with the insurance mess, the unknown of what kind of deathtrap vehicle Ronan could dream up next.
So when he pulled up to their childhood home on Sunday morning, he was shocked to see the BMW sitting unscathed in the driveway.
“What the fuck,” Declan grunted under his breath, unsure if he was happy to see the vehicle or angry that Ronan put him through hell on the lead up to absolutely nothing.
“See?” Matthew grinned from the passenger seat. “The car is fine! You had nothing to worry about.”
“Sure.”
Declan shot off a text to Ronan, he did not want to get out of the car, and scrolled through a few work emails while he waited for his brother to show up. He let the anger simmer and slowly dissipate, working on breathing through his nose. He would not be the first to blow up today, and let Ronan paint him as the bad guy to Matthew. He could already see it now, Ronan shrugging innocently at Declan, a quiet and sarcastic I just wanted more time with you, bro, and Matthew would hear none of its irony.
Two or three minutes passed and Declan looked up at the front door just in time to see a shadow pass behind the glass. Good, kept them waiting long enough. The front door open and his brother wasn’t alone.
Behind Ronan, still in the shadows of the foyer, was clearly Adam Parrish, in wrinkled clothes, dark circles under his eyes, and a smirk. He was saying something to Ronan, who laughed genuinely, the kind of laugh Declan heard most often when Ronan was making jokes at Declan’s expense. Something else passed between them, a look Declan couldn’t quite place, it was too quick.
Ronan hopped off the top of the porch onto the gravel, heading toward the Volvo.
“Lynch,” Adam called from the doorway, stepping out and using his back to keep the screen door open.
Ronan turned, patted his pockets, and then tossed a set of keys, no doubt the ones that belonged to his BMW, to Adam, who caught them deftly.
What. The. Fuck.

yeah fuck it i'm making this its own post. basically very long winded (but still not as extensively detailed as i'd like) thoughts on adam & ronan (sort of) & whelk & noah
i remember reading the raven boys back in 2014 (ten years of rot in my brain!) and being sooo disappointed that there was basically zero fandom interest in whelk & noah beyond "omg whelk is evil and awful and terrible, poor baby noah!" when that is not the narrative surrounding them, not really. i feel it's a disservice to both of their characters to do that, especially noah's:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there is nuance there. there are implications. like... it's ALL about the implications!!! we basically see nothing of whelk and noah beyond what's left after the carnage. and it's a theme in trc for characters to have irreparably changed before we ever meet them (gansey, ronan, whelk, noah). we don't know what they were actually like when noah was alive, when they were best friends. when they were tight as ticks.
what we do know is this: whelk was noah's gansey. whelk was cheating on his own girlfriend with noah's, which is a shitty thing to do for sure, but something we also have zero context for. we also don't know how true it is, because whelk has such a self-inflicted warped view of his past. he keeps rewriting his own memories to think lesser of noah, because his absence hurts that much! we know they were best friends, the same way adam & ronan are best friends with gansey. we know they did everything together
okay, changing gears a little.
i'll paste the part where adam is possessed, sorry for the amount of screenshots:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and this line from a bit further along the chapter:
Tumblr media
then, from noah's possession scene:
Tumblr media
compare this to whelk's recollection of killing noah, and the effects it had on him:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"red lines streaked in the corners of his vision" "in whelk's head, unearthly voices hissed and whispered, words blurred and stretched together" "dictated by something larger and more powerful than himself" "somehow invited into his body through czerny's death" yes i am going there, yes i am making that point. i think, to some extent, barrington was possessed when he murdered his best friend. neither noah nor adam get their own pov while possessed, so...
i mean, time is a circle. noah needed to die so that gansey would live. noah had already died, gansey had already lived. it needed to happen, and so it would.
where the difference lies, i think, is in barrington's reaction to being possessed, versus adam/noah. for all that i'm arguing possession, i don't think barry's a stand up guy, he's a kid who's never had good role models (need i pull out the quotes about his shit parents) and who was raised by money and objects and reputation, which is why i think the possession worked. the idea to kill noah might've seemed like his own in the moment, an escalation of the situation he was already in, but unlike adam/noah there was no one to hold him back (not to mention barrington isn't as familiar with magic things(?) as they are). in that moment, whelk did truly lost it. he did the unforgivable. but there is no universe in which he doesn't.
for every time we see noah reenacting his death, we also need to imagine barrington whelk, seventeen and shivering. realizing as he's committing the act that he can't go back. perhaps realizing too that he couldn't stop his hands from gripping onto that skateboard, no matter how much he wanted to after that first hit. ("But instead, he remembered the sound Czerny made the first time he hit him.")
there's also adam in this. both him as a parallel to barrington, and as a strange sort of part of noah in a way. adam and noah interact the least out of the main group, arguably, but they too are a two-headed creature; they started out as one singular character and you can sort of tell. something something hands and eyes, something something sacrifice. ronan sort of parallels noah, in that he is not the same lively person we hear about, and he never will be that person again. both are cabeswater personified (although in different ways).
some more things:
"he once had been tight as ticks with his roommate czerny" "only whelk and czerny, treasure hunters and troublemakers" "it was possible that czerny's death wasn't for nothing after all" "[...] his days a ribbon floating aimlessly in water" (in relation to: "he had been a swimmer himself, once") "czerny, you're in a better place than me, i think" "whelk, standing in the wreckage of his life, didn't laugh this time" "the dry, half-eaten burger on the passenger seat / the first fast-food burger he'd had in seven years" "these days, when whelk was trying to comfort himself, he told himself that czerny was a sheep, but sometimes he slipped and remembered him as loyal instead" "[...] took him back to that moment, the skateboard in his hands, the sad question gasped in czerny's dying sounds "we were friends like —"
Tumblr media
also, whelk dying in the same place noah did. these lines:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
both noah and barrington look the same in the end. broken, rumpled, forgotten. noah's family will never know his bones were reburied outside of their family plot. whelk's mother, however distant she is, will never be notified that her son has died. i think in a way barrington died at the exact same time noah did; something something invited into his body through czerny's death.
basically what i'm getting at is, noah and barry could've been ronan and adam i think, had the circumstances been different. they never will be, but i think about it sometimes.
and there's so many more things i'm not even gonna TRY going into, like noah and whelk both being parallels to gansey (the three of them kings in their own right), or the disparity between whelk talking about czerny vs adele talking about noah, or whatever the fuck is going on with whelk's backstory in general (what's the deal with his mother? how the hell did he get the aglionby job? a random headcanon of mine is that his and noah's search for the ley line lead them to fox way, seven years before the events of the book, and that's partly why whelk refuses to give out his name to maura, because barrington is hard to forget, and easy to trace back)
there is so much to talk about here and i'm so peeved no one is doing it properly... why are we still talking about declan bringing his weekly girlfriend over to monmouth for no reason when we could be talking about whatever the fuck kinda soul-fate-destiny bullshit noah and whelk have!

adam parrish hcs
because it’s his day!! it’s today!!!
adam always kicks off his shoes without undoing the laces then gets annoyed when he has to untie them to put them on again
so for his birthday ronan dreams him up a pair of velcro sneakers
they’re super bright and obnoxious (neon green or something) but they ALSO light up when you stomp your foot AND they glow in the dark
adam: “they’re hideous. i love them.”
he hums when he concentrates really hard but doesn’t really realise he’s doing it
usually 70s or 80s songs that play a lot on the radio when he’s working at boyd’s
so he gets a lot of songs stuck in other people’s heads accidentally
adam: *humming the final countdown by europe while doing his homework*
ronan, later: 🎵it’s the final countdown, na na naaaa naa, na na na na na naaa🎵
adam: why are you singing that
ronan: are you fucken kidding me
he’s forever fixing things around the barns or 300 fox way
leaky faucet, loose door-handle, stiff window, squeaky hinges? adam’ll fix it
i already have a hc that ronan makes adam a new mixtape every time adam heads back to college for a new semester
but i think that adam makes mix-cds for ronan too
he has an older laptop that still has a cd-drive in it because it’s second hand
so he makes cd’s for ronan’s car, filled with songs that ronan finds irritating as a payback for the murder-squash song
think like uptown funk, hollaback girl, call me maybe, happy, somebody that i used to know -- stuff that probably got way overplayed and/or was annoyingly catchy
he leaves them in ronan’s car after he drives it so the next time ronan drives it and presses play he’s bombarded with 🎵A FEW TIMES BEEN AROUND THAT TRACK SO IT’S NOT JUST GONNA HAPPEN LIKE THAT CAUSE I AIN’T NO HOLLABACK GIRL🎵
(but maybe adam sneaks some songs on there that remind him of ronan too. maybe. just maybe)
gansey teaches him how to play chess and adam rapidly becomes better than him and now every time they play he wins
gansey always thinks this will be the time he wins until adam makes a move that turns the whole thing around and gansey realises adam could’ve ended it several turns back but was just humouring him
through carefully cultivated habit his expectations for his birthday are low to non-existent
but he has friends who think the world of him and who also have the worst poker faces of all time
so when blue arrives to take him out for a birthday breakfast it takes him all of two minutes to get her to admit they’re throwing him a surprise party
“you better act surprised or ronan is going to murder me”
they get back to the barns later on and there’s a bbq going and lights floating in the air around the deck and gansey, henry, matthew, ronan, opal and the fox way ladies are all there.
“SURPRISE!!”
adam, trying to act surprised: um wow thank you guys oh my god what a shock
ronan, narrowing his eyes: sargent i fuckin’ knew you’d cave
anyway he spends his birthday surrounded by people who love him who would do anything for him :’))))

okay normal things:
raven cycle and the scorpio races.
a family of three siblings, religious, orphaned. disharmony between the oldest and the other two- puck loves gabe and will do anything to get him to stay. ronan hates declan and wants him to leave. despite that, ronan and puck are very much the same. they love their home and want desperately to stay. declan/gabe desire more. ronan/puck can’t understand why their older brother is so blatantly rejecting them (they conflate a rejection of their home as a rejection of their personhood because they’re so connected to it). this is where we see the divergence- ronan responds with anger, rage, pushing away. puck responds in desperation, pulling him in closer. neither option work. both are strong emotional reactions. both deeply love their brothers.
it’s about the loss of a childhood home, the life they’d always known. i actually go insane over characters who have already found belonging and don’t desire anything past it. the people that fight to stay. ahhh! thanks maggie.
sean/adam parallels now. they’re different, but my god look at them. sean and adam both resent their fathers for different reasons. sean doesn’t respect his father for the way he died, adam doesn’t respect his father for the way that he lived. both vow to never be like their fathers. sean/adam are hardworking, dedicated, indentured in some manner. sean needs corr, adam needs money/freedom/more. they resent those that have what they want, who could take everything from them. they take the abuse given to them by the people who hold that power, and they also try to establish their own power where they can. dog eat dog world (horse eat man world?) both think they only need themselves. sean/adam are both incredibly capable, and it is recognized, yet they don’t feel it to be so.
also, the consistent breaking down of cars, naming of said cars, me crying because i don’t understand or like cars, and they never work.
anyway. the books are different, and they’re the same. it makes me so insane. that is all

(greywaren spoilers)
Hey, do you ever think about how Adam Parrish grew up believing that everything he ever wanted had to be painful for him to deserve it?? Ronan says this in the dream thieves: "Adam was so used to the right way being painful that he doubted any path that didn't come with agony." , and this mindset follows Adam into every decision that he makes for as long as we know him. In the dreamer trilogy we can see him clearly struggling with the weight of everything he's left behind because he has convinced himself so thoughtly that him being in misery is worth it because he prevents himself from feeling that way in the future. He's so wrapped up into this cycle of suffering because of a childhood he spent with the hope for the future being the only thing that could keep moving him forward. He hasn't had the chance to learn that being happy now is as important as being happy in the future because the future is never guaranteed in the first place. He backtracks so much in the dreamer trilogy; tries to convince himself he doesn't crave magic (he does), he doesn't miss Henrietta (he does), doesn't miss the Barns (he does), doesn’t miss his friends (he does), doesnt need his past (he does), doesn't love Ronan (he does) etc etc. He tries to convince himself to be happy at harvard even though he clearly doesn't like it, or at least doesn't like as much as he wanted to like it, because that's everything he's worked for and he doesn't know how to accept that maybe he was wrong. He doesn't allow himself to doubt his decision because that, in his mind, means that everything he fought for in the past, everything he gave away in order to achieve it, was for nothing (it wasn't.) This passage from greywaren; "Although life is unbearable now, and Adam Parrish has lost everything important to him in the present by pursing the things important to him in the past, he will be fine.", sums it up perfectly. And that's why the epilogue of greywaren makes me quite honestly foam at the mouth. Adam transfers colleges not once but twice! Gansey asks him if he would like to marry Ronan at some point and he says yes! Ronan offers him a ring and he wordlessly accepts it! He comes to realize that his happiness now matters more that the idea of happiness he has made up for himself, that he is allowed to change his mind, that not wanting the life he thought he did doesn't make him less worthy. He comes to realize that he deserves happiness and love and good things and that actually none of those have to be painfull.
