Are y'all ready for Book 3? No? Well, I dont care, do I now. You're already reading, its too late for you to leave now.
The Villains of Skulduggery Pleasant 3 - Batu
We arrive in the third book, The Faceless Ones, which seamlessly incorporates the consequences of everyones actions into even worse mayhem.
Following Vengous almost succesful attempt at opening the rift, a mysterious man named Batu (who is also the guy dealing with Sanguine at the end of Book 2 being all ominous) is behind the kidnapping (and murder, lest I forget) of all remaining Teleporters. Because he needs someone to teleport something through a portal in a different dimension.
(Tangent: Im sure Shunters didnt exist yet in Book 3. I feel like this should have been a Shunter thing and I can neither remember nor bother to find proof why the Anchor needs a Teleporter instead of a Shunter. In Book 8, Crayfon Signate quite literally does something similar with the Sceptre of the Ancients, looking for a Signature and then finding the correct dimension. Im pretty sure its about it all being a gateway instead of a direct transferal. If anyone knows, do tell.)
Alright, so. We have Batu/Paddy as our main villain and he is a brilliant and excellent one. But lets get the honorable mentions out of the way, so no villains feel ignored.
Our boy Billy-Ray Sanguine is of course part of Batus Squad, but so are the remains of the the Diablerie with Jaron Gallow, Murder Rose and Gruesome Krav. I honestly admit that I feel they are caricatures and the screentime they have is sufficient not to make them boring. They all die in the end anyways and its a shame that it reflects in the way they are so very one note and almost ridiculously "evil". On top of that, we also have a Seahag (in a lake. With corpses. I do love how dumb that is). Then theres Scapegrace and the second buildup for Thurid Guild.
I will be honest with you: Batu is an exceptional villain in terms of motivation, speech and arc. His surrounding villains are sadly one note caricatures, besides those that get to live into the next book (mainly Guild, Scapegrace and Sanguine). The others are often played for jokes or just to make a point on how cruel, wicked and horrendous the Diablerie and the worshippers of the Faceless Ones truly are. Which, yeah. Thats fair. But I always love myself some three dimensional side characters, so let me be a little sad.
Now, lets think about why Batu actually works:
Hes mortal. Evil, yes. But mortal. But he could have been magic. Technically, its his birthright.
And thats all, really. Its man grasping for something he could have never had and that he could have never been gifted. Its another case of fanaticism. Fruitless, sad and deadly.
Now, the SPU has a long history of ignoring of belittling mortals in the way that they are and who they are. This becomes more apparent in later books (the xenophobia/eugenics in Phase 2 for example) but its also pretty evident here:
Batu uses his mortality, his frailness and his visual weakness as a shield. If, for example, Batu was young and fit, it wouldnt quite work the same way. His age and behaviour is a smokescreen.
Funnily enough, he even points it out in his first interaction with Skulduggery and Valkyrie:
"Reach a certain age and suddenly, you're a nobody, suddenly you're not even worth counting." - Book 3, Chapter 13
That combined with his somewhat senile mannerisms, the whole old-man schtick is so very stereotypical. Because of course it is. Both readers and heroes alike are blinded by how much of a an old man™ Paddy really is.
Contrast this with Batus first appearance in Chapter 7 and 14. The way he speaks ist fundamentally different.
"You failed me, Mr Sanguine. I paid you to do a job and you failed me. [...] You will have a chance to redeem yourself."
Paddy doesnt hold power in conversation, hes a silly little man. Its on purpose, of course. Authenticity breeds trust and everyone can relate to an old cynical man, stuck in his ways. Batu on the other hand commands a room. Speaks with a high tongue, with precision. Short and accurate, no breath wasted. Naturally.
When you read the books and you are aware of the twist, there are a lot of things, behaviours and sentences that could make you raise an eyebrow. But our heroes dont have the time to question anything, so they dont. They willingly accept that this man owns the land with the rift, that he doesnt panic at the explanation of magic, that his questions are a little suspicious. Because then they would need to stop. And neither Skulduggery nor Valkyrie do such a thing. They are cocksure of themselves, remember? And Batu knows. Batu even bets on that, as all sorcerers he has met have been equally cocksure. And all his henchmen are too. He's playing all of them, simply because he knows how they work. He has weaseled his way into their homes, has fed their cats (s. Chapter 36), has seen their arrogance and sadly his cynicism proves right at every turn. He really is invisible to them. A mortal obstacle, to be dealt with to safe the world. Always the roadstop, never the destination.
In Chapter 20, Paddys reaction to magic is a smile, not fear. He knows magic exists. It entices him. The shock he displays is - of course - an act, but a very believable one. Sure, yeah, the old man doesnt mind anymore. Hes too old, he has seen too much. Magic might as well exist to him. And he was horribly stubborn this whole time, so it makes sense that he would have an equally spiteful response to magic.
We even come full circle: Paddy asks Valkyrie if she despises mortals for what they are.
"Someone who can run fast dismisses the people slower than he is. What if its someone who can run really fast? Then the slower people become little more than an annoyance, and then an irritation. Superiority breeds contempt." - Book 3, Chapter 20
(Quick sidenote: Its like he wants to be caught when you start looking for it? He himself is the one who runs fast. He himself sees the others as annoyance, as irritation. What a beautifully wretched thing to say.)
Essentially, Paddy is justifying himself here, but, again, reader and heroes are caught up in this very relevant question that plagues Valkyrie: Being detached from Humanity, from Family. Once again, Batu is using his understanding of the magical world against them. He is one step ahead. He recognises Valkyries youth and asks her specifically. Not Skulduggery, who would dismiss it. Her. Even further, he points out the massive flaws in the systems to her, as one of the first in the whole bookseries:
"So magic people view themselves as mages and everyone else as mortals. And that doesnt sound like a group of people elevating themselves to godhood to you?" [...] "... They have the power of gods, dont they? They have magic at their fingertips. Their affairs affect the world. [...] You hold the fate of the world in your hands. If thats not godlike, I dont know what is."
Now the avid reader might have noticed that once Paddy speaks about sorcerers and magic users, his whole old man™ act falls away. His speech becomes more like Batus, because he is Batu in this moment. He isnt acting here.
And why does no one recognise it? Because its a justified question. Again and again, Batus line of logic proves true: All sorcerers are playing god to an extend. A theme that will be picked up far more heavily between Book 7-9 and the entirety of Phase 2. So, as readers, its enticing to see someone challenge the presented Status Quo and as Valkyrie, this direct confrontation helps settle her own views as a growing Teenager into this magical world of god-pretenders. Batu fulfills both the role of a mentor and a villain, pointing out the straw that will break the camels back again and again and again in the following books.
He himself fights like a mortal: There are no fancy gadgets in the big fight. There are machine guns and grenades, painfully mortal weapons. Painful is literal in this sense. Batu chooses reliable weapons of war and not unpredictable gods. At least, in the beginning. There are also the Hollow Men, a whole artifical army of them. Which, broken down, is hilarious. The sorcerers, capable of destructive magic and definitely murder, are using the mortal weapons against the heroes. The army that is there to support them is one of magical stupidity, literal child friendly canon fodder. His army of magic men is one without mind, without question. And his Diablerie, despite actually having a brain, never question him either. They're all hollow men, one way or another. Some of them by power of creation and some of them simply because they are blinded by their own fanaticism, blinded by Batu and the true fight. So, he doesnt fight like a mortal at all. He fights like a mortal that knows the sorcerers. Using the best of both worlds, the most potent startegies each side has to offer. Additionally, there is also the implication of him commanding a massive army without even being there, which does underline his godlike aspirations as well.
Finally, when its revealed that he is indeed Batu, he declares himself "not a mindless drone" and "someone with a vision" (Chapter 36). But what is the root of all his evil?
"Magic." He said. "My father was a sorcerer. So was my brother. But not me. I just didnt have the spark, you know? But now, its finally my turn."
Batu feels robbed of godhood. And that is precisely why he is summoning gods to overtake the world. If he cant reach for divinity, everyone else who can needs to suffer for it.
[Val] "You're going to let a Faceless One take you over."
[Batu] "And then I'll be brimming with magic that ordinary sorcerers would never even dream about. They're not gods, Valkyrie. They're as pathetic as the people you left behind in your old life. But me? I'll be a true god."
But that isnt everything. Despite how much his mortality annoys him, he sees it as the one defining strength that seperates him from sorcerers. His mortality makes him powerful.
[...] "I was born without magic. Ive had to be strong. My will is iron. Im not going to be simply erased - not like the others."
His mortality makes him so powerful that he will rise above the mortals, above the godlike sorcerers and be able to Neon Genesis Evangelion Pilot his way through the world as a Faceless Ones vessel.
So now everyone can agree that Batu is another insane man in a series of insane villains, right? I dont need to spell that out. But before I go and give you a nice little ribbonbow for the ending, lets look at Batus death and how its described.
"Batu turned, spread his arms and raised his eyes to his god, and as it rushed to fill him, he screamed with terror and exultation. And then Batu was gone." - Chapter 42
The Faceless One described here is the one that is responsible for all the mayhem at the end of the book. Its by far the strongest from the bunch. So maybe some part of Batus willpower speech is true. But the written text makes it very clear that this is not the case. Batu is an excellent vessel for the strongest Faceless One. But nothing more than that.
Which is horribly ironic. The man that gained the trust of dozens of sorcerers, has perfected being a non-threat to anyone but believes himself to be worthy of the power of a literal god vanishes instantly. Just like everyone else.
But I love Batu as a villain. Waving all the weirdness aside. He is compelling because in the few moments that he is actually authentic, he is terrifying.
Not to mention he actually achieved what The Diablerie and Baron Vengous couldnt. He manipulated Skulduggery into revealing where the gate was. He used the ressources of the enemy to his own gain. The saddest thing about Batu is, that if he had put his mind to anything but godhood, he would have ascended anyway. He has all the ressources: smarts, wit, the ability to plan longterm, not to mention charisma and leadership skills.
He would have made a magnificent sorcerer. And thats just... incredibly compelling. Batu isnt strong with magic. He doesnt throw flames around, he isnt a walking skeleton. He is a cynical, old man that despises the hand he has been dealt and instead of accepting what is, he cuts from the world the pieces he thinks he deserves. And in this incredible determination blossoms a man that could have been anything. That had the skills, the mind, the speech to become something wonderful, something progressive, a change bringer.
Instead of recognising the talents he possesed, he focused merely on what he didnt have. Turned to evil, to spite. To bitterness and cynicism. He almost became the downfall of the entire world in his quest to prove that he was, indeed, as godlike as the rest of them.

deep dark headcanon that explains deep dark biomes INCLUDING those without cities in them
here goes so, for context, i like to believe that the "portal" is not actually much of a portal per se, or at least not to another dimension. I believe calling it a "gateway" would be more apt. The way the nether and end are different dimensions entirely is not what I imagine is on the "other side" of that portal. I think its another plane of the overworld, the astral/spirit plane. Thats my headcanon right there. That you... may not even be able to go through, and its more of a way to interact with an afterlife of sorts, or a... more dreamy, non-matter... parts of the overworld anyways, heres what i think: sculk is a fungus-mold that forms in certain areas of the world (deep dark biomes) that are weak points (potential access points), where the plane of the spirit world is almost overlapping, almost accessible and becoming tangible. the overlap of the spirit and material realm causes strange anomalies to happen, such as the growth of sculk if you wanted to look at it ANOTHER, similar, adjacent way, you could say deep dark biomes are where its actually... that instead of things being able to pass on to the spirit plane and become non-matter, their souls stay as physical matter in the world, not quite being able to ascend to the spirit plane, which results in the growth of sculk. It feeds off of the souls that cannot make it to the afterlife, giving them a cruel afterlife of sorts, to help expand itself but hey... at least the wretched afterlife of becoming part of the sculk means that you can hear well... and you're certainly well protected, by the most strong willed of the souls... (though tbh, i really do prefer sculk being some sorta lab accident (i love when lab accidents make really fucked up things in games a la true lab undertale, and other games i wont spoil)

i saw a post earlier saying that liking knotting in fanfic / kink is a gateway to being attracted to real life animals. i know i'm definitely not into that but now i feel guilty having this kink!
being otherkin and my species having knots, it is something i like but now i am unsure if i should even read stories about that content.
i am 100% against animal abuse and anything involving real creatures, but i can't shake this anxiety. does a hot werewolf with a knot really lead you down a slippery slope? is it inherently bad?
TW: mention and discussion of zoophilia and rape short answer, no. Long answer for explanation: Being into say zoophilia does not inherently make you a bad person. Being attracted to animals would label someone as a zoophile. which is a type of paraphilia. paraphilias are uncomfortable and scary to talk about understandably. We live in a culture that is very morally correct down to our thoughts since we post them online. It is a popular opinion it's not ok to engage with zoophilic content. I'd argue it is okay when you do so ethically and use it for management of your paraphilia. people often say "thats disgusting see a therapist" you know what the therapist says? "you need a healthy outlet so you dont fall into committing acts that are illegal or harmful"
petplay and fictional drawn content like feral furry porn are two outlets that are more ethically friendly. If you are paranoid about supporting beastalists which are people who have actually committed acts of assaulting animals do a background check on artists and pick a few "safe" ones you enjoy. Personally I enjoy red rusker as he touches quite a few paraphilias but seems to be pretty normal. Further more in my opinion when is it not ok to engage in your paraphilia? This is the guide I use for myself: -Is it addicting and making my paraphilia stronger not tamping it down? disengage. -Does it encourage/glorify real acts and "making it real". disengage. -Is the content made with real acts, taken from real acts, or mimiced from real acts (like a scene for scene real event). disengage. -am I in an echo chamber where it seems that everyone around me is just okay with all content that comes through and wants to "take it a step further?" leave that group ideally. When I engage in content for a few of my paraphilias im aiming to normalize my attraction within myself (not shaming or guilt tripping myself), not engaging in any real acts or wanting to as well as overtime working to decrease intrusive thoughts to act ideally to 0, giving myself the confidence that i can identify fiction from reality. CNC, petplay, and breeding with BDSM partners have significantly decreased my paraphilia urges to "do the real thing". Some of my paraphilias like zoophilia havent had an urge to "act" in quite sometime now. I believe i was 15 when I had the last one. While Rape (victim not perpetrator for clarity) for me is something i'm still struggling with since its happened to me so often. I genuinely consider it in my day to day and plan 'in case' it happens. tips for managing paraphilias and experiences, With my rape paraphilia i've had "encounters" as recently as last year. Which means i'm far and away from seeing it as just "acting". As a victim this translates to doing wildly unsafe things from jumping in a strangers car or sudden hook ups with sketchy people. Because it's so "fresh" my compulsions are high. I've turned to a harder lean on BDSM to get the impulses out and play them out in a safe space which has helped quite a lot. I notice the more intense the scene typically the more it helps my impulse and makes me get a sense of control that I chose to do these things and now has a safe resource to seek out these acts without harming anything or anyone. on the flipside with zoophilia I never had any direct interaction with sexual animal abuse. I have met and been encouraged by bestialists to play with them which can be traumatizing but isnt a huge deal compared to the former. (in my personal eyes these are my experiences of course im judging lol) So I dont have a huge urge for compulsions. Typically I'm just playing out attraction for my zoophilia with no compulsions. I do this in roleplay or BDSM play like petplay. This dynamic of no pre-existing trauma or enocunters is much more chill and easy to maintain. The only thing I have to worry about is if a partner is encouraging actual acts or wants to share porn of real acts to me and normalizes it. That would be where i cut them off and say "no thanks!" Find a safe space where you can ethically voice your wants. It is greatly encouraged not to "just hold it in" because when you snap it often means doing the hardest thing possible. similar to drug abuse. If you are of course worried about your compulsions seek professional help. It never hurts to get a second opinion!

OOAY OKAY LEMME GET COMPOSURE AND SEE IF I CAN CONDENSE THIS AS MUCH AS I CAN WITHOUT SPILLING TOO MUCH- (will probably spill a lot of things, but excitement is vital in my energy)
Amalgaverse is, to sum it up very bluntly, a very indulgent au where my interpretations of my characters all hang out together
BUT
PLOT TWIST
I GOT STORY AND PROPER... worldbuilding???? FOR HOW THIS HAPPENS because I am an ambitious being like that-
The term "Amalgaverse" in-universe comes from an 'anomaly' that spans across the multiverse and timelines and collides and connects them via rifts (caused by the gremlin wizard I call myself Octavian) into an amalgamation that takes the form of a dome-sanctuary type of crater within the empty space.
But it's not a huge mess!

The ecosystem inside the "Amalgamation Crater" is enriched with life of all kinds- this area, and the main one I like to focus on for ✨character interaction✨, being one of the many! This is actually the safest place to be at, as Shellbreaker Resort (the building in the picture) is guarded by three shapeshifters... surprisingly, all three are also my sonas OEGCNWND
...May need to update the design of this place, heh-
Now, why are many of my art posts tagged "amalgaverse"? 🤔
WELL THATS BECAUSE THESE BOYS ARE RESIDENTS OF THIS LITTLE POCKET IN THE EXPANSIVE UNIVERSE
and the reason I like to differentiate them from their canon selves is because of their clear differences/powers from how they are in.. canon. YEA- as well as having an easy gateway to find this sort of stuff!

The reason these people HAVE such different appearances and capabilities is due to the amalgamation of colliding magic and "rules of the world" seeping in and mixing with others. And the rifts caused by the shapeshifters being incredibly irregular and slightly unstable themselves, that too-
It's why Snatcher and Bendy have such different looks (and go by different aliases too), it's why Eteled and Peter are CORPOREAL and not just stuck in some software, and it's why powerless people like Héctor have the abilities they have. This place gives them those capabilities.
And it's also why interactions between characters are tagged this weird little universe, because I imagine these interactions to happen.. *[points]* here! It makes a lotta sense too, seeing as anything can happen here.
(It's important to note that sometimes I'll go "screw it" and draw these interpretations in a canon setting... and to that I say: look out for the #amalgaverse tag in the tags to see which is which! Maybe I should put a canon stuff tag here to-)
I have a story planned for how this place, the Crater, the resort, and a whole lotta stuff came to be in this little bundle of a world I find joy developing in, as well as small ideas for how every character came to live here!
But that will come for a later time.. possibly when I get more free time.
All in all, this world is a place where I can indulge, have characters i love and cherish grow and flourish, and just.. have something I can find pure joy in. And I hope this explains a lotta stuff about this thing, and I'm always up for questions about this world and characters that come from it!
...hm, I should get to working on that blog now that I have a proper structure out here

Ok im just going to jump straight in. I believe that the glowing kid you see after Eden is actually the King (or I suppose more accurately, Prince). 
(this ended up being really long, I really hope the ‘keep reading’ worked)

Something that has always bugged me about this section after Eden, is that the glowing kid seems surprised that you offer them a hug? Originally I thought that the glow kid was a depiction of your soul, or new soul. You die, turn up here and then reassure Yourself that everything is ok - hence the offering a hand and a hug and then absorbing them before moving onto your new life. However the surprise at the offer of a hug, and then the WAY they accept the hug fits so much better if this is actually the Prince.

Unlike friend-to-friend hug interactions,it's much slower, less of a display of friendship and familiarity, and more as if you are consoling someone, specifically someone who has either not been hugged in a Really long time, or not expecting someone to show them kindness, hence the surprise and almost relief in the movement? Which would make sense if he’s spent the past few centuries alone with the guilt of destroying your whole civilisation. After the hug, you absorb the glow kid, and regain your cape, but in a pure light form - no Winged Light, you have just become a being made out of light (instead of just having Your light relit, you become much brighter suggesting that you have absorbed more than just the light you are supposed to have). This also opens the gateway back to the physical world and your path to Orbit. 
Slight side note here: you continue to glow with this newly acquired light until the Children of Light you have saved return to the sky back in their star forms. The scene where they seem to thank you has some extra implications if the soul of the Prince (ie the person who caused their split from their bodies- more about this another time) is still in your body. After they leave, you immediately lose your glow, the Prince’s soul/light has left as it has been returned to Orbit (ie the “bring our lost stars home”)
In one of the updates a few months ago, the glow kid was changed from the same orangey glow that the Children of Light had later before they leave, to a white colour with almost no glow at all. Could this be to further differentiate between glowkid (Prince) and the Children of Light that you have just saved? A further point is that, the glow kid being your soul/light conflicts with the fact that the Voice tells you that you are about to be reborn only AFTER you go through the swirly space gate at the end of Orbit. It also seems strange to receive a cape, then become capeless again in Orbit if it were a part of your soul that you were reabsorbing.
Coming back to the Limbo glowkid scene. It acts exactly the same as the Elder cutscenes, which happen at the end of their respective realms, fiting with the confirmed idea that “The locations of their cutscenes are somewhere beyond space and time”. The same piece of information continues to say “he's(the King) not there in the same way as the elders you see in the cutscenes”. Although not explicitly labeled as an Elder himself, the King is essentially the ruler of Eden as seen in the opening cutscene (and Prophecy Murals, but thats a topic for another time). This black void that you go to is the Prince’s “Cutscene Limbo”. It also fits into the rule that although these places are separate from reality, they can still affect the physical world - Prairie with the butterfly pots, Wasteland with the door, Forest with the gold wheel and the doors etc. After you have interacted with the Elder (the glowkid) and given them light (in this case, shown them kindness, then they give you light in return) the physical world changes and allows you to progress (the golden light column appears and you can fly to Orbit) 
Another side thought about the Limbo, all of the other Elder’s Limbo’s look like a place they value, Prairie’s butterflies, the Twins coliseum, Wasteland protecting the gate, but the Prince’s is an empty void with a reflective floor. Getting into speculation now, but this somewhat points to either; he has no place of value because he knows he destroyed everything, or he doesn't feel he deserves to value any place in a civilisation he caused the downfall of. (or whatever put them there decided he needed a stricter time out zone)
Anyway, the last point that supports this, which deserves a post of its own, is that in my opinion at least it seems highly likely that Prince was a sort of “Proto-skykid”. From the concept art to the murals in the Prophecy caves, to the opening cutscene and new spirit memories, to the symbols related to King and skykids that we may have had reversed all along, a lot of stuff seems to be pointing in that direction.
But that a topic for another time
One final thing though. I know someone is probably thinking “if the skykid isnt us, why does it change size to match us if we resize in the scene?” Obviously there might be some lore connection there but I’m pretty sure that its so the hug scene works properly. As you know, hugging a player who is taller or shorter than you leads to some weird air hugs/grabbing the knees, which would have distracted players from what seems to be a rather important emotional point in the story.

i dont technically hardcore ship kids buuuut i will say “fuck thats hecking cute” to any and all pairings and join in on the fun wholesome content. for example, if you give me fanart, give me fics, give me headcanons, then im already sold on how adorable that specific pairing will be bc theres now some quality content to explore. as long as its not toxic, disgusting or impractical.
god okay, get motherfucking ready guys.
now, i may rant a bit on the matter to further explain my point of view on shipping in this comic and how i will go around it lol. sorry for the long note. there’s a tldr at the end.
honestly, idc who gets together, bc i just want the kids to be happy and if the pairing is happy together, thats all that matters to me. i just dont like taking shipping to the extreme, yknow. (which means having nsfw stuff for kids and flipping out if one ship is canon when another really should be. similar to many other fandoms who have those problems and i just.. dont get why?) anyways, thats not to say i will freak out if a cute pairing of mine becomes canon and especially if the rep is nice. and honestly? ill probably freak out for any canon ship as long as its healthy and theyre both happy - as ive mentioned. keep in mind im still a fan lmao, i will prob participate in the recurring ship talk and discourse bc ugh it can be so fucking cute.
anyways, regarding what we have now, i honestly like all pairings atm (obviously between the kids only and not some cursed ones ive heard about which i refuse to get into). all their interactions are so unique and cute and quite adorable. davejade is wholesome. johnrose is valid. i also like jaderose, daverose and johndave. which technically is almost every possible pairing lmfao. sometimes my opinion can vary, sometimes things could happen to make my view on that specific pairing to change. and sometimes new people come into the picture which allows me to explore more potential candidates that i think would be better for that characters rather than just having a ship to progress the plot further. if that makes sense. it always depends, doesnt it? (so keep in mind you can ask me if i ever have changed my opinion on a specific ship, character, ect in the future)
and of course, there’s a big difference between who i think are going to get together and who i wouldnt mind getting together despite canonical evidence that it wont happen. which i wont get into unless yall want me to talk about in depth who likes who and how it will probably impact the relationships of the characters vs how it should be.. well, not “fixed”, but what could be another alternative if a specific relationship seems to have its downfalls. 
however, i doubt there’s going to be any “endgame” ships bc homestuck is more prone to story telling than romance. it’s a webcomic for plot and probable character growth rather than making people’s ships come true. meaning shipping is a concept that andrew will give you, and he will give you all types of interaction so you’re free to ship what you want. however, he’ll leave it open without giving us an ultimate pairing. which is where i think this comic will go. i may be wrong. but it seems the most likely situation.
so shipping is all fun and games but things happen, not everything becomes canon and even if i have theories on future relationships, i will only analyze what we were given and not necessarily based on non-canonical evidence. so as much as i like crackships (and boy do i have fun in crackships, lets be real), because this is a liveblog, i wont be able to get into depth with false claims on a ship if there’s literally nothing to go on. however, pls expect joke ships to happen. if i say cake #42 wants to be with john’s fake arms, so be it. that was a fun time on the discord, man. i love joking around but then again, they are just jokes. im not actually shipping them. its similar to how i view dave and AT. they got married duh. yet thats a joke. something i will bring up again, but that never means im serious about it. (besides imp soap opera. thats becoming massively real now, isnt it. a liveblog inside joke that got way out of hand and is now canon.)
anyways, romance is a nice bonus treat for everyone as they read a webcomic which is not centered around it. and of course ill analyse the possibilities of what we could get and how characters will go through it based on their personalities and past experiences, but i dont think itll become a main part of homestuck as of now. perhaps something.. could happen in the future? and ill keep my hopes of some pairings getting together. but, overall, i will be happy with whatever we get and i refuse to bitch about how some ship is better than the other and be mad at homestuck in its entirety. because andy here is not trying to portray a romcom, he’s making an actual story.
wow, i kind of went off a little on what you were trying to ask in the first place, but i feel this was a nice place to get that out there and explain how ill perceive shipping in homestuck. all so i wont have to explain this for the future when characters potentially start getting together. which is to say, ill enjoy shipping characters on my hs experience, hell, ill even participate in it, but they are 13 and i have my limits.

tldr; shipping is a nice gateway in a fandom, i like pretty much anything as long as its not toxic and theyre happy together. expect character/relationship analyses in the future.

The Spoiled Commanders, And an Old Player Rant
I like them from a “casual” veiwpoint. They aren’t just obnoxious generic value engines, mindless ramp payoffs, or simple combo pieces. It seems like every new legendary is trying to just break the commander format lately and its been a bit boring. I am looking at you Dominaria, M20, and Modern Horizons. These creatures I wouldn’t say are incredibly powerful, but they are interesting and encourages build-around decks which is what I feel makes for good gameplay in lower level commander which is where Commander Pre-cons act as gateways for newer playes. I mean, unless the player was a Vintage/Legacy veteran you probably don’t want to introduce them to commander with cEDH, and new players in casual groups don’t want Baskin Robin’s 31 flavors of Muldrotha and Yarok which ends up just being actually just one flavor with different sprinkles. From a higher level of play they don’t interest me too much. I’m not really going to go out and build any of these myself, but at the same time I’ve been a little uninspired by higher play lately. Eminence, Partners, and all that jazz just end up being pushed and often create stagnant gameplay. Going back to ice cream shoppes, Partners is just your Cold Stone Creamery of mix and match for colors but its almost always Tymna and Thrasios because cheap value engine and infinite mana outlet. Its effective, but bland. Food Chain has basically been the same deck forever but has just updated the card in the command zone several times and twidled with the cards that end up making the win. Once again, powerful strategies, but nothing novel. Urza is kind of new but just feels like more of the same. Combo oriented mana generator with an infinite mana outlet and some added Stax abusing interactions. Just kind of trying to spice up doing the same old thing over and over again with a card that looks like it was designed to sell packs to a commander player. I know these cards are actually designed to sell product, but they could be a tad more subtle about it. Maybe I’m starting to become old and grouchy, but I kind of miss when commanders were more about making use of their uniqueness as Legendary creatures instead of simple linear strategies. These commanders feel more like they have some tricks they want to do and encourage you to make a deck with that in mind. I’m not sure they will be that sucesful though, as we saw with the c18 commanders being interesting is often overshadowed by the hype of streamlined meta designed commanders. I’ve really only seen Windgrace have much widespread popularity and thats because he is a standard value/ramp engine.
Thats just me though. Most people never really had a chance to experiment in the young days of the format before WotC decided to aknowledge it and design for it. Things were never perfect, there were always commanders that caused problems and old linear strategies too, plenty of cards from Magic’s past were inherently powerful and created their own meta. There was this kind of magic in making a machine work without the blueprints written in the text box though. Taking a “bad” legendary creature that was too awkward for Standard or Legacy and using the aspects of the format that took trash to viability and making something new. A frontier where Spikes had reason to fear Timmys because the landscape was shifted. Everytime these effiecient pushed cards come out its teraforming the wilds of what commander once was. The nature and inherent but charming awkwardness of jank paved over with manufactured power. The new stuff isn’t all bad, and many of these romanticizations are just that, nostalgia. Commander felt different though, and sometimes I miss that.

and that’s what we’re here for! and you don’t particularly have to… find a fake, just by looking through tumblr (or this app, vent) you’ll find them on the way. but here are what mod Rowan and I use to sniff out a fake system:

system hopping, like you said
system resets
endogenic/natural/bpd etc systems are valid! (be careful as misinformation does get spread fast to systems that are just discovering information about themselves but 8 times out of 10)
actually saying they’re a natural/endogenic/gateway system (i know people will crow about this because “a system could just not remember their trauma!!” but as someone who, up until recently, could not remember most of their trauma, thats bull. you at least know something is very, very wrong. and are you really going to risk the one and a million chance that they are a real system?)
lots of or only recent media introjects (I’m not saying just lots of alters in general. polyfragmentation occurs, be mindful)
smaller details:
the “big bad” alter, who is a Demon™ or named something like stabby or knife. (not to be confused with persecutors, they are often alters who took on qualities of the abuser(s) in order to try to protect themselves. they can be cruel or different or worse, yes, however almost all fake systems have at least one demon alter who exists seemingly just to attack their friends and post rude things about their quote unquote host and, weirdly, only fronts when theyre mad at someone and sometimes won’t say theyre fronting but later when a friend is asking for an apology the response is “oops sorry knife must have fronted, not my fault”)
systems who are carbon copies of yours or another persons system
every alter has a kintype. or multiple kintypes. (please note here that younger real systems can arbitrarily assign kintypes to alters because they think that’s whats appropriate, but honestly? don’t sweat it too much)

For a woman to be creative she needs to be willing to take time just for herself. She needs uninterrupted classes when she is able to enter her studio, sit down at her pc or her easel, and see what wants to come. She needs to let herself get dreamy, do nothing, stare out the window, and be apparently unproductive. All through these interludes in which she drops into a creative trance she is inviting the muse to enter her and inviting the often magic formula and mysterious motion of her soul to express alone.
In these moments, she starts to face herself through her art. She always has and always will are unsuccessful of the beauty mark and just assumes that beauty is something she will constantly struggle for and rarely, if ever, gain.
The really unfortunate thing is that she sees nothing improper with this fretful and nervous approach to her self and to her ar2rk.This ceaseless and ultimately hopeless striving for the extremely hard ideal is just the norm. It’s really the only thing she has ever known.
These slender constraints of beauty that a woman finds herself tangled in are always some variation on the Good Girl creed. These socially recognized specifications are primarily based on a definition of beauty that is associated to being nice and non threatening, to not standing out too much and conforming to an set norm that is pleasant but not effective. But the flowers develop sharp edges and darkish colors and grow absolutely out of control , the rainbow colors become wildly fluorescent , and the landscapes becomes populated with darkly mysterious designs and statistics .
At this point she has stepped out of the confines of charming and attractive, and into an unidentified landscape of the wild, the untamed the unkempt and matted. This is often the start of a relationship to the inner Sensible Aged Feminine archetype, also known as the Witch. This is the face of the deep feminine that doesn’t care about appearances . After all, the Witch walks around with missing teeth and warts, and clearly doesn’t care what other individuals think. This is an awakening of the factor of a woman’s soul who is no lengthier a slave to approval and who has started to walk down the long road away from woman as product and commodity.
THE FAT GIRL: Willing to be big, be visible, to come out of hiding, to be a woman and not a little lady, to take in space, to be hungry, to say what she wants, to know what she wants, to be full of herself, to be too big for her britches, to be a full grownup, unafraid to say yes! A fat girl isn’t really afraid to take up space and to take her place in the world.
In my studio I offer high top quality paper that is of ample size, but pupils can tape the sheets together to make even larger paintings. It’s a heady time when a woman can let herself distribute out and take up some real space,when she can make a HUGE painting, one that can occasionally cover an entire wall.
Making a huge painting is a dizzying and terrifying prospect, and a woman often needs heaps of encouragement and authorization to take this step. Actually I usually need to nudge her a little. She will start with stating something about MAYBE desiring to go a little larger with her work. She feels something pushing on her, seeking to come through, and so she will ask if it’s OK to use two items of paper alternatively of one. I generously offer to get the paper for her but come back with four pieces of paper, instead of the requested for two. Irrespective how “nice” she is, at this point she is more than willing to make a fuss, to strenuously object about how it’s too much, she could never fill up that much paper, she doesn’t have enough to express, she could not possibly take up that much area in the studio.
But as I continue to calmly pin the four pieces to the easel, nodding supportively, yet disregarding her progressively frantic protestations, I see the gleam in her eye. An additional major crossroads takes place in the painting process when a woman realizes how offended and enraged she feels and she lets herself express it on paper for everyone to see. However, the feeling of anger is so taboo and so threatening that it’ll usually sneak in the back door as just a little color. Some red or black appears on the internet page and then little by little or by “incident” grows larger than the woman had intended .
As this continues , the artist begins to feel a little uncomfortable. She will stand back from her now unruly painting with a wondered frown and turn to me , saying something like ” That seems awfully angry,” adopted briefly by, “You know, I’m not really angry. I don’t get angry. A little depressed possibly, but never angry.” This is a very precarious moment in the process. I have had women truthfully walk out of the room to get away from this intimation of anger, wear their coat and announce that they really must leave now. I am typically able to coax her back to the painting for the rest of the class, but once she leaves I’ll often never see her again. The real truth of her own angry feelings is just too frightening, the prohibitions too strong, and all I can do at this point is hope for her that sometime she will be able to feel safe enough to take that deep plunge into her own passionate and furious heart .
For the woman who is geared up to take that terrifying yet interesting dive, admitting that she is indeed angry can allow an incredible depth of feeling to come flooding out. All the yrs of saying yes, yes, yes when she needed to say no, no, NO to unreasonable needs, to abuse, to putting her own needs on a perpetual back burner, come out on the paper in a frenzy of paint , of color, and of image.
For one woman it comes out as a brilliant red background, with black words painted effortlessly and starkly to read “I AM SO PISSED OFF!'”. For another , it is a large image of a woman with wildly traveling red hair, bellowing open mouthed and brazen ” What the $#%@ about me!!!”
A sixty year old woman, who has been married to a Methodist preacher for forty several years, surprises herself by painting a warrior goddess in very hot trousers, with a Colt forty five in one hand and a cake spatula (to be used as a whacking weapon when necessary) in the other.
The paintings sometimes represent images that are recognizable out of fantasy, including a snake haired Medusa, and sometimes are expressed as a whirl of color and chaos, populated by weird, otherworldly creatures putting on very large, VERY sharp teeth. But what they all have in common is that they bounce off the page with the ferocity of emotion portrayed. There’s no mistaking the intent powering these paintings which is some version of ” I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it any longer!”
I RECENTLY READ an article in a promoting journal that was caution advertisers away from utilizing the words power or powerful in ads directed in direction of women.
